Chris rambles: Joys/Pains of writing
TLDR: Personal advice that may/may not be applicable to you: Never forgo any media since it can help you write and take notes objectively. Even if the writing IS atrocious.
Throughout all my time on tumblr/writing stories in general, it's taught me one thing: Seeing the media with your own eyes and absorbing it yourself is the fastest way to learn how to and how not to write. (For me anyway.)
I.E: Watching the Genshin characters and how they speak and their articulation helped me a lot writing their dialogue and trying to make it as smooth and intact as possible. For my House Isekai folks, that's actually how I learned to implement all those characters into one setting. (This isn't necessarily a guide on how anyone should write, it's something that just helps me in particular.)
It's also the main philosophy I take when writing This World's Evil God Sucks, watching a bunch of isekai, warhammer, and all other stuff shape it up to a state I'm pretty satisfied with so far. And it's the same one I'm going to apply writing a Mecha thingy I'll be posting here soon.
That being said, it's going to cause me physical pain when taking notes for it because I'm going to be going from greats (Code Geass, Mobile Suit Gundam, ETC), to some of my most despised shows like Aldnoah Zero.
...Basically this entire post is just going to say I'm gonna stomach Aldnoah Zero, and I'm going to hate every second of it.
What about you fellow writers, what's your philosophy on this kinda thing, you try to avoid that kinda style or do you go gungho in like me, quality and time wasted be damned?

martin and chris kratt are the definition of adhd and autism brothers. Martin’s adhd shows whenever he gets distracted by other creatures (ocelot episode) or when he pulls his disks out from .. well, everywhere (his shoes, chris’s bag, chris’s shoe, his pocket, etc) while Chris’s autism shows in his hyper organization (getting slightly upset by Martins unorganization) and uneasiness around untrue change (getting upset when martin called the harris hawks the wolf hawks in the harris hawks episode).

of course eddie wasn't in buck's coma dream!! his coma dream was about family (as in mothers and fathers and brothers and sisters), it was about that side of family and how buck has always always struggled with his biological family. it was about buck realising he could forgive his parents because he has bobby, a dad that he chose and a dad that chose him right back. it was about buck realising that even if he lost daniel and was haunted by him for the rest of his life, he had chimney, a brother who becomes more of a brother to him every single day. it was about buck realising that maddie and hen are constants in his life, that it wasn't his job to save his bio sister, that hen will always be hen no matter what. it was about that kind of family of which eddie does not fit into! eddie is not a brother, sure buck may use that term for him a few times but that was something to hide behind, eddie is a best friend or that's what buck tells himself. eddie had no place in that coma dream because it wasn't about buck's romantic trauma, it was about the familial trauma he's carried his whole life. but christopher was in the dream because its about family. its about fathers and sons. its about phillip and bobby and buck himself. buck who spends the whole of 6a struggling with fatherhood and paternity and who's subconscious conjures up a kid that's supposed to be on the other side of the country and has the kid ask for his dad. buck can easily subtract eddie from the idea of brotherhood, but his subconscious absolutely cannot separate chris from the idea of fatherhood.

Late to the game as I’ve kinda been kinda non-here for a minute but I scrolled through the Dot and Bubble tag, and thought I wanted to write this post into existence.
There's this part in Doctor Who Unleashed where RTD says this:
“What we can’t tell is how many people will have worked that out before the ending. Because they’ve seen white person after white person after white person, and television these days is very diverse. I wonder, will you be ten minutes into it, will you be fifteen, will you be twenty, before you start to think, everyone in this community is white. And if you don’t think that — why didn’t you? So, that’s gonna be interesting. I hope it’s one of those pieces of television you see, and always remember.”
And I'm like. Yeah. But the reason this works even as well as it does is largely thanks to the work of the previous showrunner with the previous creative team, which was notably the first era to have any writers of color (amongst other firsts in terms of inclusivity in directors, composer, actors). While Chibnall fumbled whenever he tried to write about race himself, he did have the self-awareness to have Black and South Asian writers writing the episodes where race is the focus (and a female writer for the episode where sexism is a focus; my point is, he seemed to know his shortcomings).
I wonder what the current creative team looks like? (not really, but I wasn't 100% sure for all of them)
Tumblr media
To quote RTD:
“...before you start to think, everyone in this community is white.”
This is pretty non-self-aware, right? It's pretty “It is said, and I understand this, there was a history of racism with the original Toymaker, the Celestial Toymaker, who had ‘celestial,’ and I did not know this, but ‘celestial’ can mean of Chinese origin, but in a derogatory way,” right? (from The Giggle Unleashed) It's pretty “and I had problems with that, and a lot of us on the production team had problems with that: associating disability with evil,” right? (from Destination Skaro Unleashed)
—none of which are issues that should be overlooked, but think how much exponentially better they might’ve been addressed if he’d consulted with Chinese writers and wheelchair-using writers before going straight to giving the Toymaker weird fake accents and making Davros walk?
How many Black or non-white people do we think saw the Dot and Bubble script before it landed in Ncuti’s hands?
And this just keeps happening.
And like, from some of the shocked responses I've seen from white viewers to the ending of Dot and Bubble, maybe the episode's unsubtlety was needed? From the way RTD talks about it in Unleashed, the episode was written with a white audience in mind, Baby's First Microaggressions (where of course the microaggressions come from people who are pretty self-admittedly white supremacists). Ricky September, a more seemingly normal depiction of someone in the racist bubble of Finetime, seemed like an interesting element, up until the way he died.
The ending worked for me, because I do think the Doctor's reaction is true to how the Doctor would react. I just keep thinking of how much better the core themes could've been handled by someone with actual lived experience on the subject matter.
#dot and bubble#fifteenth doctor#rtd critical#anti rtd#ricky september#lindy pepper bean#dw negativity#racism#antiblackness#words by seaweed#not to be anti rtd. im just very critical. Anti RTD is just a tag which people use or block#every showrunner has their flaws but RTD is the only one self-righteously virtu signling over NOTHING. which is why im more critical.#plus the on-set sxual hrassment and what happened with Chris Eccleston etc. it vindicates me. idk. not tryna be a hater#ALSO dot and bubble is leaps and bounds better than any racism commentary I expected from Russell T Davies. so theres that.#can you tell I'm shy abt making long posts that someone is likely gonna be not happy about-#I usually search tumblr for posts to rb and talk in tags. but I couldnt find any posts about this this morning! tho I think ppl have since#etc its fine to critically appreciate imperfect media etc I do it all the time (as a Black fan) (who also thinks Rosa has Flaws) etc#I did see someone on twitter pointing out the hypocrisy of all white writers but twitter does not have space to talk about things#also love that The Church on Ruby Road has Mark Tonderai who became the first black director w The Ghost Monument. I love his directing#but that's the Christmas special. it is not part of this season. and honestly fr it's not close to enough#love the inclusivity in front of the camera. lets get some of that in the writing team NOW. it's hurting for it.#bring back Charlene James. can you hear me? was the best episode of Season 12.#the ep felt like a commentary on the “RIP Doctor Who” ppl under every official Doctor Who post? hence social media?#it does work best that way!! it just felt a little off of that way in rtd talking#idk im rambling. I did enjoy it tho. I just wish. but well.

New shifters? So they can turn people? Or is it just something that can awaken in anyone?
They can't turn people! It's very genetics based and uncommon I think, with most who hold the shifter genes having them be a recessive trait that's carried and potentially passed onto their children.
Most shifters have a "trigger event"- some life happening that caused the pathways in their brain to kick into autopilot and their abilities to show. There are ways to identify them before this of course, sharpened nails, elongated canine teeth, higher sensitivity to light and sound and of course there's genetic testing, but some shifters don't even realize what they are until later in life.
Christopher's trigger event happened when he was just a kid. One of his friends fell out of a treehouse he'd built with her, and suddenly he was big enough to break her fall <3
As for "new shifters", that more means shifters who are new to their powers. Think of a new superhero. They can't turn others, but they also don't exactly understand how their powers work or why, and to a creature that can be easily overwhelmed... let's just say the public opinion on shifters isn't good. If you were suddenly bigger than everything and everyone around you with people reacting in fear and you had the ability to not only lock in on heartbeats, but the innate desire to protect people by holding them as close to you as possible?
Well... being surrounded by that many scared potential victims... doesn't often bode well for the shifter or spectators involved, and when threatened? That instinct to protect can be forgotten, lost in a desire to consume what's hurt them.

The Journey to Break Free • An Analysis of Malevolent's Themes
This is more like a ramble, but analysis sounds more professional y'know y'know-
Major Spoiler Warning for Episode 19
-
Episode 19 may be my favourite episode at least for Season 2 – bear in mind that as I type this, I haven't gone past Episode 19. Regardless, it is definitely a highlight of this podcast for me. It unpacked a lot about Arthur and John, and it explored many interesting themes. The strength of kindess and letting yourself be vulnerable, the reality that healing and becoming a better person isn't always a clean journey, the significance of the connections we make and the memories we carry from them...
The first one is subversive in how despite Arthur losing some of his morality in order to survive, he still retains some of it and uses it ro his advantage. It may be baffling to see Arthur still wanting to trust others and treat them kindly, as seen with Arthur wanting to offer water to the cana, because this world can turn on you so quickly. However, that may be the point. The fact that Arthur can still find it in himself to care about the beings in this world is a true testament to his resilience. The Dreamlands is unrelentlessly cruel and tests you, trying to mold you to become the monsters that roam this realm, and I think that is why Arthur won't succumb to this world's terrors like so many before him did.
It ties into the tone of the podcast and how it shifts. Arthur may need to be cruel at times, but that doesn't mean he needs to be a monster. Likewise, Malevolent may be a bleak story, but it is not one which needs to overly indulges in tragedy and darkness. Even within the episode itself, there are moments where Arthur and John laugh. There's an entire section in which Arthur interacts with a buopoth, and it's the most adorable thing ever. These moments provide a balance that help emphasize the impact of intense moments even more than if the entire story had just been trudged in grimdark.
(Putting the rest under a "Read More" section as to not make this post too long to scroll through)
As for the second theme, I particularly appreciate it as people who try to heal, typically victims of trauma, are often villanized for not being perfect, nice or behaving. Anyone who doesn't fit the mold of being sad and helpless via lashing out or express anger about their trauma get dogpiled with insults and accusations from those who refuse to understand them. Those who only want to imagine a narrative that recovery is always pretty and always going up with no relapses whatsoever. That narrative formed because society crafted it and enforced it with media tackling trauma victims in a shallow way at best. Because it's uncomfortable for society to face the truth that trauma is ugly, and those that went through it won't come out unscathed like people want them to.
The theme of names being significant is an uncommon but meaningful one. John Doe is a name to give the King in Yellow a new identity, a way to rebuild himself. Lilly is a name that meant a lot to John as the only form of human connection he had while Arthur was comatose and the catalyst to John becoming a better person. Faroe is a name that Arthur keeps recalling because he can't let go of his daughter and the trauma that came with it.
Even the name of the episode is important. I think "the Prison" truly is an apt title for this episode. Not only because this involves Arthur and John escaping the pit they're trapped it, but it's also a metaphor for Arthur's situation. His body is a prison for John that both want him to get out of, yet Arthur is the real prisoner as he loses control over everything from his body to his life. He is trapped in the past because he can never let go of Fareo. He can never forgive himself for causing her death through his neglect no matter how unintentional it was.
And he gave in at the end. He gave in to the past and went to the city to search for Faroe even though the cana instructed them to avoid the city. Even though so many signs point to it being yet another trap. Even though the chances of Fareo being there were next to none.
Yet John didn't protest. It really shows how much John has grown to emphathize with humanity. How he has grown from someone who is selfish and uses others to his whims, discarding them when they no longer serve him purpose to someone who may not fully understand humanity but can genuinely appreciate and care about it. He may not understand why Arthur still clings onto Faroe, but he understands Arthur deserves closure, so even if this may be a trap, he lets him walk in. We, the audience, may not fully understand either, but we understand this is a necessary step for Arthur even if it may be one that leads to his doom.

as a guy that loves getting into obscure media that like. maybe 5 people talk about now. it is interesting the difference between consuming media that is SUPER popular and everyone loves your fave (a curse i would never wish upon anyone. the posts will never be good) and a media that like. there is NO ONE actively posting about. it has barely any fan presence online. and honestly its kind of peaceful
#twist rambles#like. being into the wit/cher books and games and show (the good one. the hexer) was a hellish experience. there was such isnane shipping o#that old man everywhere. there were 5 million bad takes. there were ibs whump fics (which is a plus. more of those should exist).#and it was just like. 50 million incorrect characterizations of my faves. it made me a bit insane. but then irt vol/foss and gan/gsta#its like. peaceful silence. like gan/gsta actually well. has like a minor audience i just have a lot of the tag blocked bc racism is insane#esp when ur like wow ^-^ would love if this complexly written black character was treated half as nicely as the popular guy in that media.#it does not happen. but w vol/foss. there is NOTHING on ao3 (good for me due to loving to torture myself and friends w bad fanfic) and mayb#five posters in the tumblr tag. like NO ONE is really actively playing this that ik of. even on the jp side there hasnt been a ton of#interest for A DECADE. but its weirdly peaceful other than i CANNOT talk to anyone whos played it and go insane over how well its written#its so dire that ive contemplated emailing the person who made a rly helpful fansite back in. 2004 or earlier. and being like hi. thank you#nearly 20 years later lmao. like im glad both of those medias arent super popular BUT it does mean i rly have to make all the content for i#or pester chris for 5 million hours as im in the vol/foss agony mines. but all of that to be said. popular media is such a hellhole for fan#content most of the time. so its been weirdly nice to just be peacefully vibing. even w f/e im still on shadow dragon so its VERY like ok i#care abt this old man that everyone else doesnt like so i can just. peacefully exist.

Gods I'm thinking about Chris/Clarisse/Silena/Beckendorf polycule so much
Rereading scenes from tlo and why they're much smaller moments, it just feels so much like they were all together-
Tumblr media
The way he trails off?? The way Thaila stepped in quickly in a way you see people do to rush things along when someone I obviously upset?
Like, just in general the idea of Clarisse falling in love with two who technically worked for Luke? And who suffered from that? And just- ugh
Chris is also seen with Clarisse comforting Silena after Beckendorf's death. And just the whole time he seems like he's trying to keep it together for all of them.
I know it probably me over-analyzing,but let's be honest that's most of my post hdhdf
Also, just think about Chris having known about Silena, and kept it to himself cause he knew the position she was in.
We see him described as looking "guilty" with Beckendorf's death, and overall just love the idea of Silena and him bounding. Her using her charmspeak to pull him out of panic attacks and him supporting her through dealing with Luke
I just 😭
I know I seen some people tend to use the Achilles and Patroclus parrels with Ruegard as a way to say that Clarisse didn't romantically love Chris by comparing him to Briseis but???
Like- wouldn't that be the other way around then???
Also over all its not a great comparison cause Chris was a guy they rescued unlike Briseis who was a literal trophy wife.
Like she was a prisoner of war, that Achilles literally got upset over being taken away from him. Like the Achilles and Patroclus and Clarisse and Silena thing is fair but like...Briseis was literally forced to be with the greeks. Chris wasn't. He wanted nothing to do with Luke or Kronos anymore.
Literally the chariot thing in the books? That's a comparison between Achilles vs Agamemmon and Clarisse vs Michael in a lot less uncomfortable way
Cause they're fighting over Briseis,a human, like the Ares and Apollo cabin fight over the chariot.
Actually, it's because of Apollo ironically that they ended up there.
BECAUSE AGAMEMMON WAS UPSET HE HAD TO GIVE ANOTHER GIRL BACK TO A PRIEST OF APOLLO AFTER APOLLO PLAGUED THE GREEKS.
SO HE TOOK ACHILLES' TROPHY WIFE INSTEAD
Like, yes there's comparisons, but this is another case of ancient heroes vs modern heroes theme I could go on about hdhdf
