It's gonna be a looong time before we stop noticing more details here
Yeah, it felt really weird in the moment how Doctor-like Ricky wound up being, and while of course he already has that reputation as a celeb, at the same time we can see first-hand that Lindy is a lot more cooperative with Ruby anyway

If you don’t believe Ricky September was just as racist as the rest of them because he could READ go back and watch his interaction when he spoke to the doctor. The way he scratched his head and kept looking away. THAT FUCKING AKWARD SMILE EVERY WHITE PERSON MAKES TO BLACK PEOPLE 😑 every black person has dealt with that exact interaction at least once. He knows & studies the history of his people and had no issue with it. And just because he wanted to save HIS people doesn’t mean he would have extended that same kindness to those who don’t look like him. And that fact yall would have needed to see him in that last scene to be SURE speaks volumes on how yall ignore black and brown voices on similar matters in real life.

I think the brilliance of Ricky September is not just to show that Lindy Pepper-Bean has no empathy. Ricky September’s role in “Dot and Bubble” isn’t just to die, or to show that not everyone in their society is terrible.
Ricky September is the Doctor.
He’s a handsome, flamboyant weirdo who drops out of the sky to save the female lead who is a stranger to him because he’s noticed she’s in trouble.
He’s confident, more confident than makes any sense for his situation; he’s observant, investigating and picking apart the actions of the mantraps the way the Doctor would. He knows history better than anyone around him (though for different reasons than the Doctor would). He’s clever enough to hack a computer that Lindy had just failed to even turn on—sonic screwdriver much?—and then immediately, well. What’s rule #1? The Doctor lies.
The subsequent scene of him trying to open the door? He’s completely undaunted by the unnecessarily complicated code, just fascinated, as he gets down to business. The scene is practically straight out of “42,” the one with the living star and the complicated locks, and he and the Doctor both have the same reaction to the puzzle.
Like the Doctor, Ricky disdains the vapid and self-obsessed society he is part of (though Gallifrey and Finetime are very different), and he grabs the first chance he can to find a companion and run the hell away. He uses a fake name, and his real name is such a terrible secret that its revealing has disastrous consequences.
Hell, watch the mannerisms. He and Gatwa even move their hands the same when they’re in “performance mode.”
In short, Ricky breaks every single standard set by Finetime the exact way the Doctor does, and what does Lindy do? She idolizes him. She treats him like he’s an unparalleled genius, the greatest moment of her life.
If we leave aside the murder for the moment, Ricky’s purpose isn’t just to say, “look how sociopathic Lindy and the rest of Finetime is.” Ricky is there to say, “this is how Finetime would’ve treated the Doctor if he were white.”

you’re not supposed to like Ricky guys just because he smiles and is nice and attractive doesn’t mean he isn’t as bad as the rest of them
Lindy is easy to hate on purpose. Ricky is the level 2 media literacy challenge

all these nice posts about Ricky September are so crazy cuz yall. he was racist too. like how are all of yall collectively missing that? he read the history books. he talks about "the great abrogation" with no problems. abrogation; the repealing or removal of a law. he is condescending to the doctor too. he is so clearly okay with how this society was functioning. he was nice to another nazi and politely looked down on the black man. he doesn't deserve to "be a companion" or "get a free ride in the TARDIS". He's a nazi. please stop being so dense.

Absolutely adore how awful of a person Lindy is btw.
The way she started off so peppy and "teehee so lovely 🤭🥰". Only to, when it got down to the wire, kill the person who risked his life to save her. Despite the fact that by all accounts he "deserved" to live more.
Because if Ricky had survived he might have convinced the others to follow the Doctor. Or he would have at least been instrumental in keeping the others alive.
Its entirely possible they could have both survived even, if with difficulty and great risk. But Lindy was not brave or proactive or altruistic when it came down to it. She chose guaranteed survival.
The way she started awful and stayed awful. No redemption no lessons learned. Not to mention completely aware of how horrific what she did to survive was. hiding it to the end.
The Doctor can't choose who survives or what they do with their survival, truly

"Lindy Pepper Bean should be held accountable for murdering someone" and "by putting Ricky September on a pedastal you are falling into the trap of glorifying and romanticizing the idea of the 'good white liberal' when, in fact, his activism was mainly performative and he didn't strive for actual change while benefitting from the system to extreme success" are two statements that can and should coexist

Hey, uh, where's Ricky? Is he with you? He went back. He said he had other people to save. I couldn't stop him. He was so brave.

Is anyone else worried about Ricky September as a Doctor analogue? Like, he fulfils the Doctor's narrative role when the Doctor can't be there. He knows about the service hatch to safety, check. He offers a guiding hand to Lindy, check. He's clever, he reads, he understands the history of the colony, check.
His homeworld is destroyed. Check.
He knows and hides a terrible truth about his companion's mother. Check?
His companion betrays him.
(To be 100% clear! Ruby is very very very different from Lindy and if she were to do the same thing that would feel wildly ooc! But in general, this feels like it might be RTD laying the groundwork for a massive betrayal arc.)

I have seen multiple people note how "Doctor-like" they thought Ricky September was. I agree!
Tumblr media
I think Ricky September might be there to show that Lindy was eager and willing to accept help and guidance from a white version of The Doctor but that she would refuse that same guidance from Fifteen.
