Ella and Lane, contemplating starting a band

(season 5 of GG)

Lane doesn't feel like she fits in anywhere except Stars Hollow, and as she steps into the small corner bar in the West Village, she feels like that's a good assessment of herself.

She shifts through the crowd of people awkwardly until she finds the person she's looking for in a back booth, what looks to be a ginger ale in front of her, along with a notebook and pen.

Ella lights up when she spots her friend, hopping up and hugging her tightly. "Hi! Thank you for meeting me! I know getting into the city is a pain, but I'm glad you made it!"

"Well, you said you wanted to talk music stuff," Lane grins as she hugs her back and they both take a seat. "That sounded important."

"I mean, we're not ending world hunger, but I hope it'll be worth your time," Ella giggles. She looks around quickly and catches the bartender's eye. "A coke for my friend?"

"With rum in it?" the bartender asks.

Ella gives Lane a questioning look, and Lane wrinkles her nose and shakes her head.

"Plain! Maybe later!" Ella calls.

The bartender rolls his eyes a little, and Ella laughs softly, pushing blonde curls from her face.

"So?" Lane asks, smiling. "I'm meeting you in a cool, out-of-the way bar in the Village to talk about music."

"Yep," Ella nods. "Because holy hell, do I need a new band."

Lane blinks in surprise. "I thought you were happy with Boris and Benny and Bea."

Ella blows out a breath. "Boris and Benny and Bea are great musicians. Really. But let's be real. As people, they are terrible Selfish and self-involved. They don't care about anything but their own fame and wealth. And they're terrible to tour with. So, I fired them."

"Wow," Lane breathes out. "Just like that?"

"Just like that," Ella confirms. "So that means...I need a new band."

Lane blinks again. "You...you want Hep Alien?"

Ella bites her lip, looking a little pained as she speaks. "I want you."

Silence settles over the table.

"Me?" Lane asks with a squeak. "Just me?"

"Just you," Ella confirms. "Come on, let's get real. You're what makes Hep Alien special. Gil's fine. Brian is fine. Zack is...Zack. I mean, he's a great guitar player, but a mid-level singer and his songwriting skills need work. You, on the other hand, have worked your ass off to be an incredible drummer."

Lane sits silently, staring at the other girl. "I...what? Really?"

"Really," Ella nods. "I want you to be my drummer."

Lane stares more, clearly still in shock as Ella opens her notebook.

"I have thoughts on a bass player," she says. "He's amazing. His name is Gray and he's so loose, and he's so fast, and he's a total sweetie."

Lane takes a breath. "Yes."

Ella looks up at her as the bartender settles the glass of coke in front of Lane and she takes it, chugging about half before setting it down firmly. "Yes?"

"I'm saying yes," Lane says. "To being your drummer. I'm saying yes."

"You don't want to-"

"No," Lane snaps. "I don't want to think it over, or talk to the band or any of that. I...I want to tour. I want to play. I want to get out of Stars Hollow, and see new things, and my current situation isn't letting me do that, so yes."

Ella beams at her. "Welcome to the band."

"So. Gray?" Lane goes on. "He seems cool."

"He is cool," Ella assures her. "Super fashionable, best shoe collection ever, and his boyfriend is actually a sound guy, so bonus."

"Serious bonus," Lane agrees. "What about guitar?"

Ella hesitates.

"What?" Lane asks, looking confused.

The blonde takes a deep breath. "So. Here's the thing...Dave Rygalski is uh...here. In New York."

Lane stares at her, frozen in place.

"He kind of...burnt out quick in California," Ella explains. "And uhm...he's crashing with Jess in Brooklyn right now."

Lane's mouth opens in shock. "Why didn't you tell me?!"

"The guys a mess!" Ella cries. "He hasn't even told his parents, according to Jess."

"Since when are you so buddy-buddy with Jess?" Lane asks.

Ella bites her lip.

Lane's eyes widen even more if possible. "Does Rory know?!"

"Rory knows," Ella tells her.

"And she didn't rip your head off?" Lane asks doubtfully.

"I mean, she thought about it, but then she realized that she wanted both Jess and I to be happy, and she's fucking a trust fund baby at Yale, so it's not like she's currently interested in getting Jess back."

"Wow, this whole band thing got complicated fast," Lane huffs out. "Jess isn't touring with us, is he?"

"God, no, he'd be a nightmare," Ella assures her. "No. But...Dave is still a great guitar player, and he kind of needs a win."

"So you want me to tour with my ex-boyfriend," Lane says. "And record with my ex-boyfriend."

Ella shrugs helplessly. "Fleetwood Mac made it work."

"Dave is not as good a guitar player as Lindsey Buckingham, Ella," Lane points out.

"If you hate him that much, I'll find him a different gig with a different band, and we can look for a totally different guitar player," Ella tells her gently.

Lane slumps back against the booth, crossing her arms. "Can I talk to him first? Just...do a vibe check? See where we stand?"

"Totally!" Ella promises. "I will set up lunch for you guys and you can crash with me on Riverside Drive tonight."

Lane nods and sips more coke. "I really want rum now."

Ella nods and leans over. "Bartender! It's a pirate's life for us!"

Wearing: A maroon ghagra (basically a huge skirt) and a multi-coloured blouse (there's a ceremony going on rn, while I'm typing👌)

Favourite song: I currently have four, Pluto Projector by Rex Orange County, Those Nights by Bastille, and my all time favourites Lay All Your Love On Me by ABBA and So Long by Niall Horan!!

Favourite instrument: Harp and violin (I can't choose) but just for listening since I can't play either of them 😬

Aesthetic: Well it's a combination of soft+light academia+ beachy, because I don't know any other way in which to describe it😂

THE SCANDAL SO FAR: FAIRCHILD BALL – APRIL 5TH

Birthday: Nate Archibald

Howard Archibald publicly acts out at the ball raising more than a few eyebrows as he shouted about Blair and Nate's union, his big deal with Eleanor Waldorf, the swan napkins and so forth. He then started singing “Happy Birthday” to no avail to his son Nate Archibald when he tried to talk his dad down from his pick-me-up (thanks a lot for the baggie, Damien Dalgaard!). During this very loud exchange, the FBI came crashing onto the scene and when Nate tried to get his dad's attention, he turned and punched him in his face! GASP. Howard then tried to run but after being clothes-lined by bodyguard Lili Mahdavi, there was no resisting arrest as he was dragged off by the FBI in front of all his friends and family. The room buzzed, many calls were made as who hadn't trusted Howard “The Captain” Archibald with their money? Embezzlement, possession... Punching his own son. Yikes.

Not to mention Emmeline Fairchild then took to the stage to presumably calm everyone down but that...did not go to plan. A disastrous speech made, the playlist changed to Booty Bangerz, Ella Fairchild walked out on her baby (the ball, not Emmeline); the party took a different direction but that didn't stop our Upper East Siders from partying all night long. We can’t let a good outfit go to waste, right?

Oh, and while all this chaos was going down? Jesse Walker and Sapphire Vandervort were busy accidentally outing Alexandra Vandervort’s pregnancy. So followed an uproar on Gossip Girl and one very varied “who’s the daddy?” poll. A big night for Jesse as he also blurted out he knew abut that kiss between then-girlfriend Rose Haven and BFF Dean Dawson. Meanwhile, Jason Walker was being escorted off the premises for punching Scarlett Vandervort’s date Benji Howell in the face. What would his mother say? Then of course came the notable exits of the Hunters, Charlotte Montgomery and Jessica Knightly (followed by Nick Vanderbilt and Faith Middleton) --- reasons to be revealed later in the week.

POST FAIRCHILD BALL BLOWOUT – APRIL 10TH

Birthday: Alexandra Vandervort

In the aftermath of the ball, we saw Nate Archibald try to keep a low profile as the consequences of his father's actions reached important ears. Behind closed doors, no one knows how the Archibalds are coping but if Nate's hair is anything to go by... You know how quickly we can turn, even on our own. Of course now Nate has bigger things to worry about than his "Golden Boy" reputation. Emmeline also went MIA after blowing up at everyone who's anyone (probably for the best) while the video of Lili taking Howard down started to trend.

Alex Vandervort would usually be celebrating a birthday dinner with her loving family but after the baby news broke... Well, they weren't making her dinner. Her friends banded together however and the Walker household was crammed full of her nearest and dearest while she had a good day (hormone-related tears aside). But uh, seriously though. Who's the father? The poll was so extensive... Anyways.

The exits from the ball? Turns out the Hunters and Co. had high-tailed it to Aspen, Colorado as Logan Hunter (previously MIA) was in the hospital after a ski accident. Thankfully our fave leather-clad fool was a-okay and set to return to the UES. Logan's return however wouldn't be the only one we'd see.

SPRING FLING EVENT – APRIL 13TH

How about a little innocent fun after the stress of this month so far, huh? Mrs Hunter and Mrs Knightly sure thought we could use it. They played matchmaker and set up some fun trips and treats guests could go on free of charge. Logan Hunter made his grand return, if not a little bruised and bandaged but that's not all. We also saw the scandalous return of Isobel Prescott (sidenote: what was she wearing?) and William Huntzberger who was previously hiding out in California. Everyone was having fun despite the obvious tensions...

Of course it was also lovely Elizabeth Baizen's 18th birthday! She looked drop-dead gorgeous even if her parents certainly would not have approved of the dress. In fact, most jaws had hit the floor. Could her double life finally be merging into one? Who's to say. It's doubtful she spent her whole birthday eating candy floss and hugging puppies. Anyways, pairs were paired off and sent out into the world and it was almost an event well done. Almost.

Shock! Horror! Accusations. Mrs Hunter's wedding ring and engagement ring had been stolen. Not to mention a few other priceless (sentimentality, you know?) items too. It's like we just can't have a nice day here on the Upper East Side, huh? Especially since while on their dates, Gossip Girl started to send out blasts on just what she thought of every pair and ah, it was harsh. Harsh enough to make one of our own call for a change. It would be later that Jesse Walker would send out a mass text asking for help. Help to take down Gossip Girl.

Now...

Upcoming birthdays: Dan Humphrey (20th), Faith Middleton (21st)

The "Gossip Girl Takedown" is in effect. Jesse called everyone together with a simple two step plan. Step one: cut off her supply of information. Anyone trying to send goss to GG has been stopped at every turn (Georgina Sparks can be scary, okay?) in an attempt to dry her out. There's been a lot happening. And GG isn't getting the deets, the check-ups and theories- not to mention the fact that she's already been anonymously provoked. Step two: create an event so full of potential drama that GG would have no choice but to show up to get the goss first-hand. How they'd lay the trap from there is still in the works but so far things seem to be going to plan, everyone's still on board. No betrayals, no scandals.

But that surely cannot last.

Born to die es una canción perteneciente al segundo álbum de Lana, además lleva el mismo nombre. Según la cantante, la canción trata sobre " un homenaje al verdadero amor y un tributo a vivir la vida en el lado salvaje”, a pesar de esto, tiene frases que incitan un poco a pensar sobre la muerte y como todos estamos predestinados a ella. Mountain es una banda y al parecer muchas de sus canciones son tomadas y puestas en otras canciones como sample vocal. Pues con Lana del Rey no fue la excepción y su canción “Long Red” fue colocada en la canción de Born to Die.

Lou Reed fue un músico, perteneciente a The Velvet Underground y se considera como el padre del rock alternativo, la verdad yo no sé sobre eso, así que no voy a comentar. Al parecer para Lana, Reed fue una gran influencia, no solo en la música y lo expresa en algunas de sus canciones.  

Esta canción dice:

Candy came from out on the Island  

In the backroom she was everybody's darling  

But she never lost her head  

Even when she was giving head  

She says, hey baby, take a walk on the wild side  

Said, hey babe, take a walk on the wild side  

And the colored girls go

“Take a walk on the wild side” es una frase que se repite toda la canción de Reed y también aparece en “Born to die”, claramente Lana solo la copio. Podría parecer que Lana del Rey toma todo lo que le gusta y lo pone en una canción o lo menciona en la letra. Pero eso es muy interesante porque de esta forma alguien puede encontrar tema para su trabajo de todo el semestre, exprimirlo y utilizarlo. 

“Brooklyn Baby” es una de mis canciones favoritas, es una de las canciones con las que he pasado noches enteras llorando (lo puse porque sé que nadie se fija en lo que escribo), pues es una canción rara porque bien podría tratarse de una chica que está enamorada de un hombre mayor: “They say I'm too young to love you”; o bien, no tiene nada que ver. En esta canción también aparece Lou Reed, pero solo es una mención chiquitita:

Otra canción de Lana del Rey que me hace pensar en Lou Reed es “Off to the Races”, que dice: Queen of Coney Island. La verdad no estoy segura si lo haya hecho como referencia a un álbum de Reed que se llama “Coney Island Baby”, pero se me ocurrió mientras leía sobre la vida de Reed.
