November is usually my Shining month, and so I want to bring forward again something I have been repeating for a long time now but that I don't see being picked up a lot by people. A detail that is well-hidden inside the Doctor Sleep movie, but that makes the piece even more infinitely appreciable and shows it was made by true Shining fans.
And this detail is... the ghosts of the Overlook Hotel.
Tumblr media
Now, when this bunch appeared during the final scene some familiar faces could be spotted. Grady of course, the Injured Guest from the "Great party, isn't it?" scene, the Twins, and of course the Woman of Room 217 -sorry, 237. But there are other faces there - seemingly random people in fancy outfit just for the sake of it. People were confused as to who these people were...
But all you have to do is look at the end credits. And you have a big surprise.
The familiar faces are confirmed to be the ghosts we always thought we were, or to correspond to famous ghosts of the original novel. The twins are confirmed as Grady's two daughters, while the woman in the white dress (not on the picture above but you can her in the scene) is Mrs. Grady. Meaning we have the whole Grady family as ghosts. The woman of room 237 is confirmed to be indeed Mrs. Massey, just like in the book ; as for the Injured Guest (only referred to as "injured guest" in the original scripts of The Shining), the sequel decided to make him Horace Derwent. Meaning he likely can switch between a young/attractive and older/more gruesome form, just like Massey's ghost, since in the original movie Derwent was clearly seen though not named in the scene with the man wearing a dog-bear-like costume (the script confirms it is supposed to be a dog costume though).
Alright, but what of the others? Now this is where things get interesting! The bald man to the right of Grady? That's Vito the Chopper. Yes, the Vito the Chopper from the novel by King, the mafia boss who got his head blown off in the Presidential Suite - as for the two men near him, they are his two bodyguards, Victor T. Boorman and Roger Macassi. Also from the book. These three characters are actually an Easter egg for those who read the book (and we know from the original treatment of Kubrick's movie that the criminal paradise-era of the Overlook and the murders at the Presidential Suite were originally supposed to play a big role in the cinema version of the story too).
But things get even better with the last ghost of the group. He doesn't appear in the picture above either, like Mrs. Grady, but you can notice him during the scene, a large man right behind Mrs. Grady when the ghosts first appear (he is played by Marc Farley). And the ghost's name, as revealed in the credits is... James Parris.
Now, fans of the novel might wonder "Wait... Who's that? I don't recall reading about him". And indeed, you did not! At least if you just read the regular version of the novel! James Parris is however a true character of the Shining, a true victim of the Overlook Hotel, a character written about and invented by Stephen King... But he is part of the deleted prologue of the novel, "Before the Play". You know this prologue that was not part of the published novel but was released in various TV magazines several times, and then finally re-added to the main novel in the collector Cemetery Dance edition of "The Shining"? You must have heard of it - even before the Cemetery Dance release the prologue was going around the Internet, published on small fan websites and discreet literature blogs...
And James Parris was, according to the first part of this prologue (detailling the building and creation of the Overlook... and its first victims) the second owner of the Overlook Hotel. A man that was touched by the same obsession and madness for the hotel that had overtaken Watson's grandfather (the actual builder and first owner of the Hotel), and, if I recall well, ended up dying of a heart attack on the hotel's garden-grounds (near the topiary beasts if I recall well, but I am not too sure, I haven't read the prologue in a while).
So all of that to say - not only did they bother placing an Easter Egg for the fans of King who had read the original book ; but they also placed an Easter Egg for those that knew of or had read the Before the Play prologue, which most regular fans of the novel never even heard about! If this isn't commitment to researching your source material, I don't know what is!

BEN HARDY (1921-1994)
Custom motorcycle builder Ben Hardy was born Benjamin F. Hardy on July 25, 1921, in Los Angeles, California. However, historical data regarding his family, upbringing, and obituary have yet to be recovered from the annals of time.
After World War II, as the United States experienced a slight depression with high unemployment, and California had an unemployment rate of 8.8% compared to a national average of 3.9% in 1946, Hardy established Hardy’s Motorcycle Service shop in South Central Los Angeles, located at 1168 E. Florence Avenue. He built two ‘Billy’ bikes and three’ Captain Americas,’ made at that time from a 20-year-old, heavily customized Harley-Davidson Panhead, with the assistance of another Black motorcycle builder, Cliff Vaughn, the most famous motorcycles ever made.
Los Angeles, California, was a city divided and segregated along racial lines, and it did not welcome Hardy and his creation into the mainstream motorcycle world. However, Hardy and Black motorcyclists continued riding the typical ‘Billy’ bike in their limited circle. In the 1950s, during the high point of Jim Crow, some viewed the camaraderie of riding a customized Harley chopper creatively in a group as a revolutionary act.
In 1969, Hardy’s chopper was showcased in the iconic 1969 motorcycle film Easy Rider, in which two bikers travel through the Southwest and South of the U.S. with lots of money from a cocaine deal. His bikes were duplicated for this movie if mechanical failure or wreckage during film shortage were anticipated. The film Easy Rider brought in more than $60 million; however, Hardy was inadequately recognized and did not benefit financially from the movie’s success.
In 2014, 20 years after the death of Hardy, the Captain America bike sold for $1.35 million. Four years later, in 2018, Hardy’s work was featured in the “Black Chrome” at the California African American Museum. This exhibit, sponsored by the Automobile Club of Southern California, the most prominent member of the AAA Federation of Motor Clubs, was about the historical development of African American motorcycle culture. A replica of Hardy’s Captain America bike is housed in one of Germany’s largest motorcycle collections at the German Two-Wheeler and NSU Museum in northern Baden-Württemberg.
Ben Hardy died in 1994. He was 74.

Benjamin F. Hardy (July 25, 1921-1994) was an African-American custom motorcycle builder who made the Captain America and Billy choppers for the 1969 Peter Fonda road movie Easy Rider.
The Captain America bike, made from a then 20-year-old, heavily customized Harley-Davidson panhead is considered one of the most iconic motorcycles ever built.
Working with another African motorcycle builder, coordinator Cliff Vaughs, Hardy built two 'Billy' bikes and three 'Captain Americas', one of which was destroyed in the making of the movie, the rest of which were stolen. Each bike had a backup to make sure that shooting could continue in case one of the old machines failed or got wrecked accidentally. The 'Billy' bike was typical of the custom motorcycles Black bikers were riding at the time.
Hardy and Vaughs remained largely unknown and uncredited for 25 years as they were not accepted due to being African-Americans, and were not welcomed into the mainstream motorcycle world in the USA.
Known locally as "Benny" and "King of Bikes" Ben Hardy's Motorcycle Service was located at 1168 E. Florence in Los Angeles. He was a mentor to many of the local motorcyclists in South Central, Los Angeles.
His work was featured in the “Black Chrome” exhibition at the California African American Museum

North Blue Language CH. 7
“We got company!” He yells pointing up.
“They’re just bugs! Why the hell are you scared of them!” Zoro demands of him and Sanji can't say anything about the iron mask and how Sanji couldn't fit his tiny, bony, malnourished hands into it to get the bugs to stop eating him. His mother cried looking at him during their escape or how his dad had found him in a panic attack because he got bit while outside once.
“They're a cook's worst enemy.” He says because that is also true.
“So you act like a little girl?” Zoro laughs at him. “Pathetic.”
“Stop pissing me off, asshole! At least I don't get lost!” Sanji yells as he lands a solid kick against the green haired man. He wishes he could be honest but he can't, he can't it will kill them if he is. The crew only just found out he's from the North Blue talking to a descendant of Noland the Liar, Cricket, and he's not sure people believe him.
Sanji fights a man who claims to be God in order to protect Nami and Usopp. He's electrocuted several times and he doesn't die. Sanji wonders if his death would be payment for the suffering his mother went through, especially if it was for protecting his crew. Would it be worth enough?
Luffy wins against God, he's Luffy. Of course he won. Enel, God’s name is Enel. The golden bell is ringing and it's gorgeous. He can't help but sing to the dead god under his breath as they leave Skypiea. The hymnal to a god of slaves as they leave. It's comforting as they head to Water 7.
The Foxy pirates are an interesting group and Sanji is made to be the ball in the final game. He's getting his ass kicked with Zoro. All the illegal moves are legal for them and Sanji can feel his ribs break. They win luckily. Luckily. They make it to Water 7.
The Merry is no longer seaworthy unfortunately and Usopp doesn't believe the builders as he starts to work on the Merry. The crew is fighting about it and Usopp leaves and Sanji, regrettably because it's Zoro making a good point, he agrees with the Mosshead that he'll have to make gracious apologies to come back to the crew.
They just don't expect Robin to leave either. They save her with the help of Franky. And Sanji takes on the Sea Train mostly by himself. He finds Usopp and they watch Robin and Franky be saved by Luffy and as they head back to give Merry back to the sea Nami catches it.
“Sanji! You're bleeding! What happened?” She yells at him as she rips the sleeves of his shirt up and sees the scabbed over cuts up both his arms.
“They're not that deep, they've already stopped bleeding too, don't worry!” He says, deflecting easily. “It's not my hands, I'll be fine! Promise!”
“I'm sorry you went through all that trouble for me, Cook-san.” Robin apologises.
“Nonsense, I would have done it for anyone on our crew.” He smiles at her as he fends Chopper off. He wouldn't expect the crew to do it for him because a cook is more easily replaced. Maybe they could find one Zoro got along with. Franky, Paulie, and Iceberg promise to have a ship ready for them in three days. The fourth day the ship is revealed and it's magnificent. Sanji loves the galley, it's for them and their ever growing crew, like Franky. They hang everything up from before.
Nami's trees are back on deck, Luffy and Chopper have a swing, Zoro can lift weights in the crows nest. There's more room in the bunk rooms. Nami's navigation room is huge and she's in love, the aquarium has the bar and library and Sanji finds more books from his childhood than he thought possible.
When they sail and find a skeleton named Brook and a ship island called Thriller Bark. Usopp, Nami, and Chopper are terrified and for good reason. Of course they go investigate the island despite Brook telling them not to. Luffy has to get this skeleton’s shadow back. Sanji will follow his captain to the end but he knows a warning when he gets one, a real one anyway.
After he saves Nami, because she got kidnapped and almost married off to the guy who had the clear-clear fruit and Sanji. Sanji has issues okay and he's so glad his crew isn't around or conscious enough to hear it. His shadow gets stolen and he sees his zombie fight Zoro and maybe they're meant to be enemies after all.
“Okay but we need to get our shadows back because the fog is gone and it's almost dawn!” Sanji yells at Zoro.
“And what do you take me for, Shit-Cook?” Zoro yells back as they fight Luffy's zombie until all the shadows are free. Luffy is passed out from exhaustion and Moria is gone. Somewhere. Sanji can't feel him or that pink haired girl anymore but there's someone new.
“We got company!” He yells pointing up.
“Who the hell is that?” Zoro demands and Sanji could tell him it's Kuma, he could tell him about the paw-paw fruit but he stills in fear because he needs to protect his crew, his captain. Sanji gets thrown away when he attempts to attack as do most of the crew. “Leave my captain alone!” Zoro demands of the Warlord.
“If you take your captain’s pain I will spare him. I will not take his head.” Kuma says.
“You got a deal.” Zoro says and then Kuma gives him a taste and it's awful. Sanji can hear his haki scream in agony and pain. Sanji wishes he would never hear something like that again.
“Tell the crew to find another, Zoro.” He demands as he lights a cigarette and stands in front of Kuma. Except Zoro knocks him out and when he wakes he follows the searing pain until he finds Zoro. “Zoro? What happened?” He asks gently as goes and holds the man upright and starts leading him back. There's so much blood. Too much to be outside a normal human body and live and Sanji feels anger that Zoro, the one Luffy needs most, did something like this.
“What happened?” Zoro breathes raggedly as he lets himself be dragged. “Nothing, nothing at all.”
“Stay with me Moss, we’re almost to Chopper, okay?” Sanji says as he tries to go faster. Faster and faster because the crew needs them back and for Zoro to live. He lives and Chopper is thanking Sanji for finding him.
“You have as much resolve as he does, it was quite beautiful.” Brook says as he plays the piano.
“I thought you were a violinist.” Sanji says instead.
“I know a good amount of instruments.” Brook answers. “Do you have a request?”
“No, it's alright. Thank you, Brook. I'm happy you're joining the crew.” Sanji smiles at him as he goes and sits next to Zoro. “Fucking idiot Mosshead.” He sighs. He watches the crowd sing Bink’s Sake with Brook and wishes he was in Zoro's place. The nicotine steadies his shaking hands as he sings the lullaby about moon softly to Zoro. He sings again when Luffy climbs into his bunk shaking and clinging to him.
“Captain?” He asks at one point, clearly concerned because Luffy hasn't climbed out or fallen asleep. “How about some hot cocoa then? That's what I do-” he cuts himself off but Luffy is nodding and rubber arming himself around the cook so he gets up and makes his way to the galley.
“Luffy, I need you to get off me and free my arms, okay? You can still hold on if you want but I need my arms and hands.” Sanji explains and Luffy nods and his haki is scared and frightened. Sanji makes it and sits with Luffy at the table.
“What happened? I'm his captain, I'm supposed to protect us.” Luffy asks as he burrows into Sanji's side as the elder lights a cigarette.
“He's the first mate, Captain, his job is to protect you.” Sanji explains and Luffy buries himself into Sanji's side.
“Can you sing the song about the moon again?” Luffy asks and Sanji obliges, petting his captain’s hair. If it was him Luffy wouldn't be as sad because a cook is as replaceable as an oil lantern. Eventually he and Luffy both fall asleep and there's a photo of it on the wall the next day.
~*~
The next one comes out two weeks later and Sanji looks both less ridiculous and more ridiculous. Mihawk and Sora stare at it perplexed because this one is an actual photo at least but his heart eyes are sickening.
“I hope it was a cat.” Sora murmurs.
“It was definitely a type of cat.” Mihawk sighed and took a light slap to his shoulder as penance.
They do not get another bounty poster, instead a wailing pink haired teenager, younger than Sanji floats into the parlour. The look Mihawk gives Sora as she observes the girl and flicks her hair.
“Well, she's not Reiju.” Sora says after going to sit on Mihawk's lap. The girl huffs indignantly at them as Mihawk wraps an arm around her and gives Pink Hair a look of anger.
“Ew, what an ugly name. So not cute.” Pink Hair sneers as she looks around. Sora stiffens and Mihawk is furious. He knows Sora didn't have much of a hand in anything involving her kids until her and Sanji's escape. The names were numbers and codes for experiments.
“I suggest you apologise and leave or I will make you leave.” Mihawk snarls.
“I would love to leave but I have no idea where my captain is! Where the hell am I?” Pink Hair snaps.
“Kuraigana.” Mihawk snaps back, grabbing Yoru’s hilt. Pink Hair follows his hand and her eyes widen in shock.
“Oh shit, you're Dracule Mihawk.” She whispers in horror.
“Yes, I am. You just so happened to insult my wife. Who the hell are you?” He demands.
“Dracule, she's a child.” Sora chides quietly.
“She's a pirate.” He says, fixing Pink Hair with a look. “And not a very bright one.”
“Gecko Moria is my captain, he's a warlord as well! I'm Perona!” She squeals out in terror.
“Moria? I haven't heard about him in ages.” Sora says. “You don't know where he is?”
“No, some stupid rubber kid wrecked everything.” Perona groaned. “I haven't heard anything in like a week.”
Sora fixed Mihawk with a look that made him frown at her. They both knew if Sora said the word Perona could stay. They both knew that she held so much power over him that if she told him he would die for her. It didn't take much as he released Yoru.
“She can stay as long as she's polite to you.” Mihawk relented. Sora nodded as she stood once again. She led Perona away to a spare bedroom he assumed. Perona and Sora appeared to be about the same size so she could wear Sora's dresses until he went on a supply run.

My TBB headcanons for life on Pabu
- Hunter is the BBQ king like he has all the tools and one of them button up Hawaiian shirts he puts over a tank top
- Omega likes to flip the burgers and she's the only one Hunter allows anywhere near the grill (with him holding her hand ofc bc we stan an over protective space dad)
- Crosshair sometimes climbs onto people's roofs or up trees with a pocketful of pebbles that he likes to throw at people as they pass (until he accidentally hit Hunter in the head, thinking he was someone else, and was lectures at for a full three hours)
- He still does it anyway
- Wrecker becomes Mr Fix It; tiles falling off your roof? Wrecker will fix it. Pipes burst? Just shout for Wrecker. Want an extension built on your house? Wrecker's on it. He's basically Bob the bloody Builder and everyone loves him
- Echo pops in from time to time and all the kids of Pabu immediately swarm him and he has no idea why (Crosshair bribed them) and even when Omega's grown and he's retired from the rebellion to live out his days on Pabu, a new generation of children will sniff him out anywhere and launch themselves at him
- Hunter finds this hilarious
- Omega joins in even when she's 30
- Hera pops by for dinner every week, even the week where she was grounded (she tried to run away to the rebellion again), Chopper snuck her out so she could see her friends
- This happens less and less as she gets more and more wrapped up in the rebellion, but she tries to see them every few months
- Every time she comes, she asks Omega to join her but she insists she needs to take care of her aging dads
- She also talks a lot about her kids and Kanan (who all the boys thought was her husband until Omega explains that they're strictly 'not together')
- One day Hera stops coming by, around the same time that the news of Lothal's hard-earned freedom breaks and Omega gets more and more worried for her friend
- That's why she decides to finally join the rebellion and do her part (and also to find Hera and demand what tf is going on and why she doesn't come visit anymore)
- When she does find Hera, she's different, hardened and almost cold. She's got a baby on her hip and a face like thunder for anyone but him
- Omega never finds out what happened to her friend, only hears vague stories about how bad it was and she never sees any of the kids Hera had always talked about. She never sees Kanan either
- She doesn't need to hear the stories. She understands

Just - think about how far we've come.
Tumblr media
A boy in a barrel, to one of the literal top baddies in the world, the mega farts of the government, boarding the Sunny. One of the five elders is on their ship. It might be a horrifying sight, but it's a sight none of them could have ever believed would happen.
Tumblr media
Usopp, a lying boy from Syrup Village, whose tales could never have come to par with his future. Who's proved he's far stronger than he knows.
Nami, a thief fighting to buy back her village from Arlong, now a manipulator of weather, the master of one of Big Mom's Homies, with a bounty that would've paid for her village three times over, who could easily fell Arlong herself now.
Chopper, a small reindeer rejected by his kind, now, not only a doctor of the same caliber with some of the best in the world, but a fighter Wapol could never be a match for.
Sanji, "just a cook" on a ship in the East Blue called the Baratie, a "disgraced" prince, with love stretching farther than the sky, a powerhouse so selfless he saved his "family" and shoved it in their faces. Who can far surpass any of them in all fields.
Zoro, a lone bounty hunter with big dreams, who received a near fatal taste of just what it meant to achieve those dreams, now chosen as worthy by some of the greatest swords in existence, who saw the grim reaper, and lived. But most importantly, gaining a family he would ferociously protect to the death.
Robin, a woman who resigned to her fate, not only freed, but coming to see what she is truly capable of. Her friends have her back, and she has theres, eternally. Never will she run again. Unless it's towards the future.
Brook, a man who already sailed the seas, who already cheated death, who already believed it was over - only for the sun to shine again, finding that his story is not over, and that even after all that time, is still discovering new things about himself.
Franky, a boy abandoned by his parents, taken in by the greatest ship builders in the world, who watched his adopted father fall to the government - yet still standing his soul beliefs, and the pride and life he brought to his ships. Then, an adult, who found out that he's not just destined to be a ship builder, but to sail those ships across the world. To grow even more inventive with his wacky nature, creating robots some can only dream of.
And Jinbe, who's been here all along. Who watched the rise and fall of the Pirate King, who watched the rise and fall of Whitebeard, who participated in the fall of the remaining old-generation yonkou. Who saw the death of his queen, but the resolution of bringing her killer to justice, and seeing Shirahoshi begin to come into her own. Who decided to make a promise to a man in a prison. Who placed his bets on a young, crazy boy. Who risked his life to save said boy during his life's worst moment. Who is not done with the world, and not done carving a path of justice for all.
Finally, Luffy. And well -he shines just as bright as the day he declared his dream.
