OTD in Music History: Historically important virtuoso pianist and composer -- and widow of legendary composer Robert Schumann (1809 - 1856) -- Clara Schumann nee Wieck (1819 - 1896) is born in Leipzig, Germany. Regarded as one of the most distinguished pianists of the 19th Century, Clara exerted tremendous influence over the musical culture of Europe throughout her remarkable six-decade career. A child prodigy who was trained by her father, she embarked on her first international concert tour at the age of just 11. While still a teenager, Clara married Robert against her father’s loud protestations. Although the marriage was a happy one which produced eight children, she was thereafter forced to sublimate her career to husband’s career for nearly twenty years. It was only after Robert was confined to an insane asylum in the 1850s that Clara truly blossomed as a mature virtuoso, bolstered by her close personal and professional relationships with Johannes Brahms (1833 - 1897) and violin virtuoso Joseph Joachim (1831 - 1907)... PICTURED: An original copy of the program that was handed out to audience members who attended a concert which Clara gave in her hometown of Leipzig in 1859, sponsored by famous German music publisher Breitkopf & Haertel. Very much in keeping with her “conservative” musical bent as well as her tireless dedication to furthering her late husband’s musical legacy, at this concert Clara performed a Sonata by Ludwig van Beethoven (1770 - 1827); accompanied a singer in an Aria from W.A. Mozart’s (1756 - 1791) “Marriage of Figaro” and two Lieder written by Franz Schubert (1797 - 1828) and Felix Mendelssohn (1809 - 1847); played one of Frederic Chopin’s (1810 - 1849) Scherzos; and then topped it all off with several works written by Robert – including his beloved suite of character pieces, “Carnaval.” Quite a program!

Ehi musicista! ☺️

Hank Pym in fact plays the piano (mostly in those early Tales to Astonish stories). What do you think his favorite pieces were?
Anon, please tell me what issue this is bc I manically went through the first 20 or so issues n couldn't find it and I'm so obsessed with this I would love to know n see it. taking this opportunity to be self indulgent and say he should be into Rio Romeo. I've been obsessed with Bet and Missus Piano for the past few months so.
Other than that I think he should play Beethoven's ii. adagio cantabile from piano sonata 8 because I like that one n I think it has Hank's vibe. Beethoven's C minor pieces in general go well with Hank I think; apparently his artistic tragic character is represented through C minor as being "heroic, impulsive and tragic" which is very Hank Pym! I also think he would play Etude No.6 by Phillip Glass, as well as Scherzo No.2 by Chopin. Definitely I think intense melancholy pieces is what Hank likes the most, but he would for sure have some Party Tunes in case. Thinking abt this guy forced to play Piano Man for his gf's relatives.
#idk if im naming these pieces right i have absolutely zero experience in classical music i just enjoy it sometimes#headcanon that he learned piano in university as a way of impressing maria when they first started dating 😊#alternatively maria taught him herself 👀👀👀#gonna think abt him playing+singing aint misbehavin now thank you anon#hank pym#anonymous

smooth time signature changes (and other metric modulations)
method 1) maintain the same number of accents between meters!
here, i move from a 3, 3, 1 pattern in 7/8 to a 3, 3, 3 pattern in 9/8, to a 3, 3, 2 pattern in 4/4, and it's smooth because they share the same number of clear accents.
with the clear accents, it changes the feeling from "the meter is suddenly different!" to "this beat is longer/shorter now!"
Everyday Ghosts by Thank You Scientist uses this in (at least) one section! (the "don't you ever change" section, i haven't analyzed the meter hard enough to list all the uses of this)
method 2) metric ambiguity
in Chopin's G minor Ballade, he has the right hand play passages with a 12/8 feel and the left hand play passages with a 6/4 feel to transition between passages with a 12/8 and 6/4 feel.
in the above, the octave jumping descending 2nds figure is felt in 12/8 while the accompaniment is felt in 6/4. the arpeggios are felt in 12/8 while the accompaniment emphasizes the 1st beat of every bar, fitting in either 12/8 or 6/4. then, the section drops the 12/8 feel and resolves into the nocturne-esque section.
the transition to the scherzo-esque section messes with the space between 6/4 and 3/2 (rebeamed from original for clarity)
(not written, but these are measures 140, and 141)
in the scherzo-esque section, there's a bar that splits the feel between 12/8 and 6/4 used as a turnaround. (measure 141)
(the next transition also messes around in the space between 12/8 and 6/4 but i'm too lazy to make more scores for this)
Chopin never resolved the metric ambiguity outside of 6/4, but he certainly could have!
Macchina by Sungazer uses this to do a massive metric modulation!
2.5) polymeter
related to metric ambiguity is polymeter, where you just use multiple time signatures at once.
(i'll categorize this as a subclass of metric ambiguity because (even though polymeter is, in fact, ambiguous meter) what i mean by "metric ambiguity" is usually done with time signatures that take up the same amount of time, whereas polymeter is usually done with time signatures that take up different amounts of time)
there's probably more im just tired and cant think!

Chopin you EVIL BASTARD. i ADORE your scherzo (op. 65) but the crazy melodies are KILLING ME. wish me luck 🫣
I do not appreciate such language!
But if you really adore my scherzo… May I enquire as to what you need luck for? Do you have a performance coming? I remember performing it at my last concert in Paris…
Whatever it is, be sure to stay calm and breathe. Remember what I always say, “Time is the best critic, and patience the best teacher.” So have patience!

please enjoy this beautiful performance of Chopin's Scherzo in B minor Op. 20, by Aimi Kobayashi at the XVII International Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw in 2015.
you can hear at about 3:40 the 17th century Polish Christmas carol “Lulajźe Jezuniu”, which Chopin wrote into the Scherzo.
#your honor i love her#music#aimi kobayashi#fryderyk chopin#christmas#we're not sure when exactly he wrote it but it would've been during his first couple of years away from home#chopin
