Kinda having feelings again about the right to relational choice. How you both have the right to draw boundaries and protect yourself, and have the right to let someone stay in your life if they have high value to you even if those on the outside can't see it or call them Toxic. Maybe you discover later that person *wasn't* good for you but it's still your choice, and choice is valuable.

OK correct me if I'm wrong, but I feel like the main 'yin/yang' parallel with Atsushi and Akutagawa is not something like 'this one is bad but secretly has a good side and this one is good but secretly has a bad side'.

I feel like it's more about 'who they are at their core vs who they choose to be'.

At his core Akutagawa is kind and at his core Atsushi is not. But despite this Atsushi tries every day to make the kinder choices and I love him so much for it. He has to work so hard to be good.

He wants to be a bitch SO bad I know he does but he tries his best to help people and be nice (sometimes he fails but that's OK <3)

Atsushi doesn't always WANT to help people, a lot of the time he's selfish and scared, but he does help people anyway. He keeps helping people over and over again. There's still some selfish motivation to it, and his initial motivation for helping people was because the headmaster told him that's all he was worth, but overall he does care about the people he helps and it weighs on him if he fails to save them. And of course, as the series goes on he starts helping people more because he can rather than because he feels like he needs to.

In Akutagawa's case, he's still capable of being kind but his environment led him into being someone who chooses to hurt people. But he's always been a protector at heart. In the start he was bad compared to Atsushi because he was choosing to hurt people and keep the cycle of abuse going. Just like how Atsushi developed in why he saved people, Akutagawa starts to get redeemed when he chooses to not just act on his rage. Not only does he start to spare people, but he speaks more kindly to them (apologising to Higuchi and telling Kyouka he's proud of her). It all culminates into the moment he chooses to help Atsushi and sacrifice himself for him, going back to his core value of being a protector. Even when he's finally revived, he keeps this role in his new position as Aya's Knight.

I kind of see the streaks of white in Akutagawa and the streaks of black in Atsushi not as their 'hidden sides' but as their fundamental selfs. That's who they are at their core, and their main colours (black for Akutagawa and white for Atsushi) are how they're presented to everyone else and how they try to have people see them as.

....I keep being surprised and distressed and disappointed by how many people not only have access to information which could undermine their views but *have* accessed it, *know* it, at some level even *believe* it, and seem to make a conscious choice to interpret it in such a way as to make themselves feel superior and the other guy (gender neutral) look bad.

I was raised *without access.* I literally did not have opportunities to learn things which weren't spoon fed to me ideologically, much less incentives to try. Everyone I knew and trusted was from inside the same insular community, all my school curricula; ideologically compatible radio only, internet usage watched and sometimes directly controlled, visual media vetted, *library books* vetted individually before I checked them out until my mid-teens. Even books my fundie homeschooled peers were allowed to read sometimes didn't pass inspection. Even if they were for sale on the shelves of bloody Lifeway.

And for me... there are many things I have been initially confused, but also *relieved* to discover in the wild! It's so cool to me that the world outside the greenhouse is a more complicated and less unmitigatedly terrible place than I had been led to believe! That many people are in fact working from different data and interpretations than I was rather than denying "the truth" for the evil lolz or whatever, and that many, many people whether they love my God or not are doing their very best to love their neighbor and help their fellow-man.

And then I keep finding that the people who tried to keep me in the dark were not perpetuating a *mistaken* belief and too invested to look outside, and they weren't unaware, even, that their take on the data could be actively harmful. Sometimes maybe they convinced themselves there would be *worse* harm from another course of action, but...

They still knew. They knew. Sometimes they even developed the ideas I was taught as an intentional hostile reaction to the ideas I was relieved to discover. There are so many powerful people who demonize their neighbor and terrorize their own children *willfully*, with the full ability to have chosen otherwise.......

I was a *child* for fuck's sake, everyone who was supposed to teach me was teaching me badly, many of them were *originating* bad teachings rather than just passing it down the grapevine, and I *trusted* them.

I trusted them.

I mean I don't want a book I don't own altered by me if I can remotely help it, library or loan? I get sad if the cover of a paperback that isn't mine gets and edge bent because it settled at the wrong angle in my book-tote!

But *potentially needing to discard* is... much worse than I was thinking. Somebody's margin notes could *kill* an otherwise-intact circulation book??

I have very strong opinions on this subject, and I'm curious how others feel.

Huh.... I'm actually not sure I've ever found one who is Me very deeply. But I have a lot of feelings of commonality with Tiffany Aching, in at least a surface way. The thorough attachment to collecting language and liking to use The Right Words; the actually kinda selfish and possessive love but desire to use it in a self-aware way to protect and help the people I've claimed; the mixed feelings of attachment and alienation towards my home community because something doesn't fully *fit* there, but also not completely fitting in my found-community because the norms we're accustomed to are so different at times. And I would like to hope that in a pinch, instead of shutting down inside in a crisis, I might be able to find a bit of her quiet courage.

HC they first met a year or two after Yelan got her vision; post fighting the in abyss but when Kaeya was still navigating his identity from Kaeya, Brother and Right hand of Diluc Ragnvindr to Kaeya Alberich, Cavalry Captain and Quarter master of the Knights of Favonius.

Kieran has me in a chokehold. His character arc is so GOOD. You can tell that his bitterness and anger doesn’t just come from everything that’s happened to him recently. It’s pretty obvious that he’s been living in Carmine’s shadow for a LONG time and she’s always kinda treated him badly. But it wasn’t until the player character came along that he was finally able to voice that in his own way;; Just when he thinks he’s made a true friend in someone, someone that can and will stand up to his sister and is able to defeat her in battle (which inspires him to start speaking up for himself more), Carmine steals them away. And that’s a big betrayal to him. He clearly has self esteem issues which leads to him thinking that Carmine was talking shit about him behind his back and getting the player to believe that he wasn’t worth being friends with. And that makes him think both of them were laughing at him and making fun of him. And THEN the player goes and takes the last thing that Kieran has, the last thing he truly cares about: Ogerpon. It’s no wonder he got so frustrated and petty and lashed out 😭 Still breaks my heart to see but they did a really good job showing that progression of him losing more and more of his patience with Carmine. And him generally feeling like everything he cares about is being torn away. And losing to the player over and over just makes things WORSE. He’s not strong enough to beat them, he’s not strong enough to stand up to his sister, he’s not strong enough to be worthy of Ogerpon, he’s not strong. He needs to get stronger. Stronger and stronger and stronger.

GODDDD. He’s going to live rent free in my brain forever now. I can’t wait to see the direction they take with him in The Indigo Disk
