Bullfrog Character Study and why i feel so bad for him
Did you notice that Bullfrog does not cry at all until his execution? Not when Jade died, not when Pey'j died and, to our knowledge, not while he was in jail.
When Bullfrog talked with Rayman and mentioned Pey'j's death he sounded so bitter. Yeah he probably said it to hold a mirror in front of Rayman but also i feel like at first he didn't intent to say this, that this just slipped out and he then decided to roll with it. I do not know much about Assassins Creed but i do know that he had to embody the Brotherhood's ideology of freedom, peace and equality. To my knowledge to "peace and freedom" also counts "free of vengance/hatred/bitterness" and so on because these feelings do not make you free, hence why Bullfrog tried to stop both Dolph and Pey'j from acting in vengance (allthough with Pey'j it also was so the Warden doesn't detonate the bomb). And espacially because of the survivors guilt Bullfrog thinks he has to be the perfect assassin.
However, Assassins are just people too. People are flawed and cannot follow this perfectly. And Bullfrog was incredibly bitter. Probably not just bitter too, one can just imagine what he felt. He lost everything he cared about again. He failed again. Not to mention, i doubt he ever allowed himself to grief. And i feel like feeling that horde of emotions also lead to self loathing to a degree.
Bullfrog is supposed to embody the Brotherhood's ideology, hell, the entire brotherhood considering he's, to his and our knowledge, the only one left. He's not supposed to feel everything he's feeling right now, yet he does and it eats him up. The survivors guilt forces him to perfectionism. If he can't be the perfect assassin, then what is he? To him he's failing his ancestors and brothers, his fallen comrades, the ones he's fighting for, everyone.
And despite all of that he never once allowed himself to cry.
Except when he was convinced he was going to die.
Bullfrog cried during his final words as he apologized to Dolph for failing him. And i can promise you these tears weren't just because of the apology, no, in these few tears was at least a bit of everything that happend. Because he didn't have to stay strong anymore. He thought that's it. This is where he and the brotherhood will die. And he probably felt two main emotions in that moment. Hopelessness and relief. Hopelessness for very obvious reasons i doubt i need to elaborate, but relief? He didnt have that burden anymore. He thought he was going to die so that weight he's been carrying for who-knows how long would be off his shoulders. It's a very small price, but at least it's something.
Everything i've said so far is why a certain comic by @pitafish hits so hard to me. I won't show it here because i didn't ask for permission, but basically what happend is that Bullfrog and Ramon were lying in bed and Bullfrog had a breakdown so Ramon sang to him and hugged him to soothe and comfort him.
[Edit] i just got permission to link the comic so here you go
Bullfrog let himself cry. He let himself be vulnerable. He lets himself be an individual with his own thoughts and feelings instead of an extension/personification of the brotherhood. And most impressively, he did that in front of someone else. He let someone else soothe him, hold him, take the place of comfort he himself always took for others.
And that's what makes it hit so hard.
In conclusion, Bullfrog deserves a hug, a blankie, hot chocolate, to bawl his eyes out and some well-deserved rest.

Name: Chocolate Diamond
Race: Gem
Weapon: Whip
Sex: Sexless
Gender: Woman
Pronouns: She/Her
Gemstone: Chocolate Diamond
Gem Placement: Left Shoulder
Alignment: The Decked Diamond Authority
Voice Claim: Teri Hatcher
Bio: Long ago, when the universe was still young, there were eight beings made into existence. These where White, Yellow, Blue, Pink, Black, Red, Chocolate, and Orange Diamond. For many eons, the eight Diamonds lived together in harmony. Things changed though when the first four Diamonds realized there wasn’t enough galaxies for all of them to have. Because Black, Red, Chocolate, and Orange were viewed as weaker Diamonds, White Diamond had them to be casted out. Furious, the other four waged war against their older sisters. They lost however, due to the fact their armies were few in number compared to the others’. Defeated, they retreated far into space.
Chocolate Diamond was in charge of the Technology Development of the Decked Diamond Authority. She made sure that her Gems would make the best of the best technology for their empire, no matter the cost. Chocolate was all in favor of conquering more planets. She would make sure that they would never show weakness ever again. She also had a fierce rivalry with Red Diamond for Black Diamond’s approval. No matter what Chocolate would do or how many planets she would colonize, she could never get Black to show her the same warmth as she did with Red. Chocolate would try to find anything to bring Red down or to make her look bad in front of the Courts. She would never succeed until one fateful day.
Her pearl told her that Red was planning on leaving the Authority with her Court. This was exactly what she needed to put Red in her place. She went directly to Black and Orange to tell them about their fellow Diamond’s planning to start a rebellion against them. At first the two didn’t believe her. Chocolate though convinced them that in two days time Red would announce she would leave the Decked Diamond Authority to start her revolution. She suggested that Red’s ships should be rigged with bombs just in case. If it turns out Red wasn’t leaving, they would remove the bombs before her Court would notice. After some consideration, Black and Orange agreed. Two days would pass and what Chocolate stated proved to be ‘true’. Once Red’s armada was far enough from the Mother Planets, Chocolate ordered her Gems to detonate the bombs. After their detonation, the Decked Diamond’s armies checked the wreckage for any survivors. Chocolate finally got rid of that waste of space Diamond and she could fill in her place as Black’s confidante. Since then however Chocolate has noticed how reclusive her fellow Diamond has become. She questions whether or not Black was really as strong as she thought she was.

I saw Wonka today, and I’m going to explain the movie to you now.
Spoiler alert! (And huge unreality warning!)
Following a successful heist in Loompaland, Willy Wonka and a ragtag gang of Oompa Loompas have fled around the world and are living peacefully; Willy lives with Lena Scrubitt, his assistant Lofty lives with Bleacher and his son Jack, and the rest of the Oompa Loompas live in luxury. Meanwhile, CC (Chocolate Cartel) agents Kevin and Rowan investigate the destruction of a German shipping convoy by a crew of cargo sailors led by former British SSS (Special Sweets Service) major Arthur Slugworth. Kevin locates Willy and convinces him to help capture Arthur by showing him a photo of his supposedly murdered friend, Noodle, who is working with Arthur and his crew. Willy and his gang accept the mission in exchange for amnesty and the establishment of his chocolate shop.
In London, Arthur’s hideout is found, but is revealed to be a distraction, while Arthur’s crew performs a heist at a Hardy’s building. Arthur flees in a custom car, detonating his hideout and disabling most of the shop’s staff, leaving Willy, Lofty, Bleacher, the Oompa Loompas, Kevin and Rowan to pursue him. Noodle arrives to help Arthur, tossing a hot chocolate bomb at Willy before escaping. Back at their headquarters, Kevin tells Willy’s gang that Arthur is stealing components to create a “Dark Chocolate” device that can shut down the power of all candy stores in the area, intending to sell it to the highest bidder. Meanwhile, Arthur’s investigation into Willy’s gang reveals Noodle’s friendship with Willy, but she is revealed to be suffering from amnesia. Willy’s gang learns that Arthur is connected to Felix Fickelgruber, a powdered sugar salesman whom Willy and Bleacher imprisoned. While some of the Oompa Loompas purchase several ice cream trucks from an auction for the mission, Bleacher returns from Cardiff as a prisoner to question Fickelgruber, who reveals that Arthur helped him build his powdered candy business and Noodle survived the explosion; Arthur took her in after discovering her amnesia.
With NCA help, Bleacher is released from prison, regrouping with the team in London. Willy challenges Noodle in a mixed street baking/racing competition; afterward, he returns her favorite book, but she chooses to remain allied with Arthur. After Noodle leaves, Arthur arrives and offers Willy a chance to walk away, threatening to hurt his business, but Willy refuses. The Oompa Loompas track Arthur’s next attack on an Indian zoo. Arthur’s crew assaults a waterway shipping convoy carrying a computer chip to complete “Dark Chocolate.” Willy’s gang interferes while Arthur, accompanied by Noodle, commandeers a tank. Bleacher and an Oompa Loompa flip the tank before it causes further damage, resulting in Noodle being thrown from the vehicle as Willy saves her. Arthur and his crew are captured, but reveal Lofty has been kidnapped by Arthur’s henchmen. Kevin is forced to release Arthur, and Rowan, who is revealed to be Arthur’s covert accomplice, leaves with him; Noodle chooses to remain friends with Willy.
Arthur’s group boards a moving Transall C-160 as Willy’s gang gives chase. Willy, Noodle and Bleacher board the craft; Bleacher rescues Lofty and escapes. The plane attempts to take off but is held down by excess weight as the rest of the team tether the plane to their candy trucks. One of the Oompa Loompas seemingly sacrifices himself to save another from one of Arthur’s henchmen. Noodle kills Rowan and escapes with Kevin to safety, but Willy pursues Arthur and the computer chip. As the plane crashes, Arthur is thrown from it and is seriously injured, and Willy drives a chocolate truck out of the exploding plane. Willy reunites with his gang and gives the chip to Kevin to secure their pardons and his factory. Willy and the others move into an abandoned castle to commence building a new factory. Kevin and Lena, now working together, arrive to confirm the gang’s freedom; the gang prepares to start the factory’s construction.

[A theres a knock on your door! When you open it.. There's a rather large present, with a note on top! the note reads as follows:
"hey im your secret santa. merry arcmas? meant to get this out earlier but busy. sorry for the delay. should still be arcmas for you right? hope you like the gift. just make sure your mons dont eat the chocolate of course. -rs"
Within the large box is lifesized Flareon plush! It's very fluffy... There's also some Konpeitō, chocolate chip cookies, and a Spell Tag.]
// this is the perfect chance for some lore lets gooo /lh ~ | The place was BUMPING when they first got there, lights all over the place, music blaring from inside both the house and the restaurant next door, both Christmas related and, not.. I could swear one song over in the restaurant next door sounds like it's singing about talking in your sleep.. Odd branding too, who's that yellow bear? | ~ ~ | Well anyways, after the knock, a voice echoed from in the house, one that was drawing closer with footsteps. | ~
"WE'RE NOT BUYING ANYTHING, IF YOU TRY AND PAWN OFF THOSE SHITTY KNIFE SETS ON US I SWEAR TO THE GODS ABOVE AND THE DEMONS BELOW I WILL- oh."
~ | The Brunette in a Santa Outfit was cut off as she realized it wasn't anyone, rather, anything. She examined the box for a second, before pressing her ear onto it to make sure nothing was ticking. Too many times Tavish put stickies in there, so says her memoir. After confirming that it wasn't a collection of bombs that her scottish father figure had sent to detonate again, she slowly brought it in, the party inside still bumping as she did. | ~
"Looks like we got mail folks. No clue from who, thought postal service didn't run today..
~ | She paused, pressing a worried hand to her chin.. | ~
"percy and the other mail services d i d get the christmas mail done yesterday right.."
~ | Another woman, taller than the brunette by what looked to be two or so inches approached, resting a hand kindly on their shoulder, faded gold eyes matching Andrea's own shimmering Sapphire, and black hair drifting down her back. | ~
"Yes honey everything there was sorted don't worry, I listened to your ramblings last night.. What's it say?"
~ | The brunette at last decided to properly look at the box's tag, reading over the note left on it. As she did, two other figures walked over, the child, and the cannibal. Both were taking an interest in the box, listening to their mothers converse about it. | ~
"hey at least one of us does Cassidy."
~ | Andrea jested, giving a small peck on the cheek to the spiritual woman next to her. And as usual, the ghost melted into her wife's grasp. Lesbians. | ~
"Ok from what I've read, it's from that Secret Santa thing we signed up for back at the start of the month. Forgot about that thing somewhat.. Hey they got the time zones right it's still Christmas here on the Pacific Coast.."
"Then why does it say 'Arcmas'."
"Might be a different name for it, different religions, cultures, ways of celebrating, y'know."
"Ooh. Yeah fair enough."
~ | The two women took a step back, as they looked to the kid and the demon girl who are still eyeing the gift. | ~
"Have at it you two."
~ | As SOON as Andrea said those five words, the two began to rip open that gift's wrapping with the might of the demons below which, honestly makes sense considering one's dead, and one is actively possessed. | ~ ~ | Eventually, the two finally got the box open, and pulled off the lid to reveal the contents inside. | ~
"COOKIES. MINE."
~ | Mary rushed off, cookies in hand, the feast shall begin. | ~
"Oh FUCK yeah! Spirit Tag! Been looking for one of these! Shed will love this."
~ | Maddie scurried off to the couch, showing her Shedinja the tag, and carefully securing it to him in a way that wouldn't make him shatter into a million pieces, not only using it for the fact it's a Spirit Tag, but also as a Name Tag, just in case he takes another joy ride on the railway out back. | ~
"No way, no fucking WAY bro! I remember HAVING this shit as a kid! My parents ALWAYS put this in my stocking!"
~ | Cassidy grabbed up the Konpeitō, ripping it open, and taking a good handful, putting it into her mouth and MELTING at the flavor.. | ~
"Mmmph! Oh my god that is, really, really nostalgic.. Honey?"
~ | Cassidy turned to see what her wife was doing, only to see the woman on the floor, holding the life-size Flareon plushie in her arms like a child, or more accurately those like *gently holds* memes with the yellow creatures. Her own Flareon 'Coasteon' was looking at it with great intrigue as well. She was practically frozen, just, holding it close. Cassidy couldn't help but chuckle, sitting next to her, and snuggling up, giving her a soft, yet loving hug. | ~
"Lost a lot this year, I know ya did. But, hopefully next year has a lot more promise. Merry Christmas Honey."
~ | And with her quiet words, the brunette leaned on the black haired spirit, and quietly, the two enjoyed the last fragments of the season together. | ~
// OOC // WOO! I LOVE writing! Always a wonderful Christmas treat to be able to absolutely print like a mother fucker. Thank you for the wonderful gifts, honestly wonderfully thought out. No idea who sent em but if you're the one let me know! // Also I think it's time for an update to that character post. Wife Time.

"I wish I had the same trust in myself as you do."
[They crushed the chocolate, the bomb detonating in their hand. They didn't flinch, didn't blink, but it was clearly painful.]
"Whenever I'm this... exhausted... the first thing I think about when I see a person is what would be the easiest way to kill them. It makes me want to throw up... but I can't control it."
[They opened their hand. It was scarred, deeply scarred, from years of different pains.]
"And in case you're curious, that empty bottle could be easily driven through your eye."
[An agent with large bags under their eyes walks into the room absentmindedly, holding a half empty box of chocolate labeled *CATION: MAY EXPLODE*]
"Hey Reggie, I found this in your office yesterday and I'm here to give it back, only like two of them detonated, by the way-"
[They froze as they saw the figure in front of them.]
"... You are not my handler."
(@phoenix-and-found-family :3)
(I'm trying to start an rp with you, if you don't want to do that I'm sorry I bothered you /g)
[043 freezes as they hear you come in, turning around slowly with wide eyes.]
Um. Oops? I wasn't supposed to be seen.
[They see you reach for a holster.]
WAITWAITWAITWAIT!!!!! I'm not- I'm not hostile. I was waiting for your handler to get back. You kinda scared the shit out of me.
[They chuckle awkwardly.]
You can call me Phoenix, or um. [Muttering] Shit, wait, no, you're Phoenix... [They turn back to you] Call me 043. Nice to meet you.

Imagine Peter saying "I love you" for the first time
peter definitely says it before you do, and each time he imagines it in his head, it's perfect. it's too bad that real life is less than perfect, and the moments he feels closest to you end as abruptly as a bomb that's detonated.
there's one time at homecoming and your hands are around his neck, head on his shoulder, and he's not quite breathing properly because this is the closest he's been to you and the slow song that's playing is one that was actually on your playlist for him. what a coincidence, right? not like you were on the committee for homecoming or anything. and so you can't stop grinning, trying extremely hard to hide your smile when you look up at his big brown eyes and you're sure he's about to kiss you. and he does, of course, and it feels fucking euphoric, like discovering your favorite ice cream flavor for the first time. however, he has three words choked up in his throat that can't come out. and before you know it, the song ends, and mj swoops in between you so that she can drag you into her circle in honor of the rihanna song that's playing. peter joins, of course, with a fake smile and the ghost of a confession on his lips.
there's another time when you're tending to his wounds. you could never really stomach blood -- you had to go to the nurse's office that one time in middle school after you had to prick your finger for science class. another time, you remember being carried by a fourteen-year-old peter to the nurse's office because the biggest guy in your grade happened to run into you in PE, causing you to eat shit while the other kids laughed. a scrape on your leg decided to bleed profusely, and in haste, your PE teacher sent peter to carry you bridal-style to the nurse. it's funny, really, the way he'd taken care of you then, and now you were the one bandaging him up after a night of patrol. he admires your unwavering gaze at his wounds even though he knows you're usually squeamish, but you don't admit that you'd gotten over your fear of blood because you'd wanted to help him (that, and your older brother insisted on putting on so many gory horror movies on during your childhood that you'd become desensitized).
it's ironic, really, that the first time peter parker tells you he loves you is when both of you least expect it. it just... comes out one night. after an exhausting night of him fighting bad guys and you studying pages upon pages of useless material about dead white men for your sociology exam, the two of you find relaxation in each other's company. more than anything, peter parker is your best friend, and you feel the most content in the world when he's laid in your bed with you watching a studio ghibli movie to wind down. and both of you are drunk on the idea of sleep, maybe a tad intoxicated on leftover wine that you'd stolen from your mother's pantry, and peter's now rambling about how if you were a fish, you'd be an adorable fish.
"you're just like her. so full of life," peter rambles during the credits of ponyo.
"so you think i'm a fish," you retort. smartass.
"sure, but an adorable one. like, the cutest one ever. and you can't not tell me that i literally embody sosuke."
"you do," you admit, nodding along.
"we're just like them. two best friends in love."
your stomach flips at the sound of that. you can't tell if it's from the alcohol or not.
"hm?"
"i... they remind me of us, i think. the way sosuke loves ponyo is so fucking cute," peter murmurs, eyes still fixed on the screen. "i think i love you like that, too."
"you love me?"
peter looks at you with a serene expression, as if those three words were as easy as saying yes to a plate of chocolate chip cookies.
"i love you, y/n."
"i love you, too, peter."

They lost however, due to the fact their armies were few in number compared to the others'. Defeated, they retreated far into space.
More eons would pass since then. The four Diamonds rebuilt their armies twice the size they were and made their own authority. Red Diamond was put in charge of the military, making sure their soldiers were in top condition. She was proud of how far the Decked Authority had come, but she began to notice a change in her sisters. They seemed set on making their grip on their side of space larger by colonizing more planets. Red thought this was foolish. They and their subjects were beings who would last years upon years. Their army was big enough to easily fight against any enemy that stood in their way. They were following down the exact same path as the original Diamond Authority. The Diamond discussed her concerns with her sisters but it fell on deaf ears. Devastated and frustrated, she decided to make the drastic choice of having her and her entire court leave the Decked Diamonds. Once she announced her departure, the Red Diamond Court loaded on their ships and headed out for space. However, bombs detonated throughout her whole armada when they are miles away from the home planet. Red Diamond grabbed the closest Gems to her and barely made her into an escape pod. She was only able to rescue six of her court. She was about to check the carnage for more of her gems, but a Decked Diamond Authority ship was fast approaching. Heart broken, the Diamond had no choice but to retreat.
The little pod was able to make it to a planet unknown to Red Diamond and her other Gems. When they landed, the ground was covered in green grass and the sky was the clearest blue. After a moment of reflection, Red Diamond turned to what was left of her court. She told them that they were no longer her's to control. Here, they were equals. They were allowed to do whatever they pleased. Red even gave them the option to leave her. None of them wanted to leave their kind Diamond's side. She was touched by their loyalty to her, even though she was the one responsible for their situation. She vowed right then and there that she would do her best to help them carve out their new life on this new and strange planet.

Word count: 9301 (it gon be a ride)
Tumblr media
Bucky’s been scared many times in his life before. He wouldn’t admit that out loud, but most of the time, even as the Winter Soldier, he was terrified. Afraid to fail and of the consequences that would follow, afraid to succeed and have another person’s blood on his hands, afraid to look in the mirror, for the face staring back at him wasn’t quite his own, and even afraid to sleep in the dark, terrified the spirits of his victims would come out for revenge. But he’s never been as scared as he was in that moment, pointing a gun at the head of the love of his life, while she did the same, only without any clue as to who Bucky was.
His mind was still processing how they’d gotten in that position, and it refused to accept it, because nothing, not a single thing had clued him in on how that day could turn south so quickly.
It had started off as usual with Bucky’s flesh hand sliding down Y/N’s naked spine, as she had her face pressed against his toned chest, small snores escaping into the air, while a small dribble of drool trickled down the corner of her mouth.
Bucky couldn’t help the smile lifting up his lips. It was moments like those, he believed in good things. 5 AM, the New York sky dark and without a trace of morning light probably until 8 AM, with his favourite person in the world pressed up against his side, soaking up his warmth, leeching it off without any shame after having been satisfied (or at least he hoped so) by his tongue, fingers and, well, other things as well.
Y/N shifted a bit, trailing her palm up to his abs and settling in the middle of his chest to feel his strong heartbeat. Bucky laid his palm over hers. Even in her sleep, she didn’t hesitate to entwine their fingers and bring them under her chin, closer to her, as if she needed him next to her at all times.
He felt bad, he truly did, as he squeezed Y/N’s side, making her frown. “You gotta wake up, dollface. We gotta get ready.”
“Dunantdo,” she mumbled, and if Bucky hadn’t been there to take care of her drunken ass more times than he could count, he wouldn’t have been able to decipher her slurred words as “don’t want to.”
“I know.” He chuckled. “And believe me, there’s nothing in this world I’d wanna do more than lay here with you… well maybe go down on you a few more times at some point as well, but the mission won’t happen on its own.”
Bucky felt her chest rumble against his, as she laughed. “Oh, I wouldn’t mind you going down on me, mission and all.” Her words were clearer, but still laced with sleep, and muffled by his skin while he felt her calves run against his as she stretched out.
“I know you don’t. The missing hair chunks on my head prove that.”
“Hey!” she slapped his chest but soothing it immediately blearily looking at him with a pout. “I didn’t pull that hard!”
“I’m not complaining, sweetheart.” He pressed a kiss against the top of her head. “In fact, if you ever stop doing that, I will make sure you regret it, but unfortunately we don’t have time for a rendezvous. Jet’s gonna be ready in an hour.”
Finally, after having accepted the fact she won’t get any more sleep, Y/N lifted herself to rest on her elbow right next to Bucky’s ribs and opened her Y/E/C sleep-filled eyes to look into his cerulean ones. “We can still squeeze in a quickie if we hop into the shower together.”
“We can,” Bucky hummed, metal fingers lifting up to cup her cheek and place a strand of unruly hair behind her ear. “But you know a quickie for us is never quick.”
Y/N let out a scoff and pushed away from their fluffy duvet, making her shiver as she placed her feet on the cold floor. “And whose fault is that? You’re the one with the super-soldier stamina.”
“And you,” he pinched her ass making her squeal before giving him the middle finger and taking the red Henley she’d so happily taken off his body the night before only to put it on herself, “are the completely irresistible one. Can you blame me for wanting to spend eternity between those two legs in every way possible?”
The smile she threw him over her shoulder was nothing short of wicked, but instead of joining him in the warm embrace of the bed, Y/N made her way to the bathroom. “Keep talking, Mr Charmer. Might just get you what you want.”
Bucky was happy about having super speed as well with how quickly he hopped out of the bed and pressed her against the cold tile wall.
           ***
Much to Steve’s annoyance, although they were barely fifteen minutes late, Bucky and Y/N were late, and when he saw the smug grins both of them sported, he genuinely thought his eyes would get stuck at the back of his head with the hard roll he gave to them.
“As a new policy,” he started, flipping over the mission file, “I’m putting you two on a celibate streak.”
Y/N raised an eyebrow, plopping down on one of the metal benches as the Quinjet lifted in the air. “Really, Steve? Do you truly want to deal with Bucky like that? Cause I know, I don’t.”
“Well, your fondueing is disrupting the schedule.”
“Oh relax,” Nat butted in, throwing Y/N a chocolate bar, given how no one had had time to eat proper breakfast. “It’s not like the HYDRA base was going to suddenly disappear.”
“It could’ve,” the blond super soldier countered.
Nat rolled her eyes, not bothering to hide the smile she had on her face. “Which is why we have an inside man, who as of three minutes ago has confirmed – they’re still there. And by the looks of it, not even trying to run.”
Bucky’s arm slung around Y/N’s shoulder and pulled her closer. “See? Everything’s still on track. Besides, from what I heard from Sam, he’s loving the whole under-cover thing so we were doing him a favour.”
Tony had gotten out of the pilot’s seat and joined in on everyone discussing Y/N’s and Bucky’s sex life, so that was her cue to switch the comms in her ear from ‘communication’ setting to the ‘music’ setting, leaning against Bucky’s side and closing her eyes, cashing in on those lost sleep minutes she’d spent in the shower with her lover.
When they had about forty minutes left in the air, Bucky once more woke Y/N up as she’d fallen asleep while Steve and Tony went over the last briefing.
“Bucky and I will take the South-side entrance,” Steve said, pointing at the holographic map Tony had pulled up. “Y/N, Nat and Wanda you take the East, and go as easy as you can, Red.” Steve nudged his chin towards Wanda who nodded. “Just because you can bend reality doesn’t mean you can bend your health. That’s where the main intel storage unit. Get as much as you can and get out. Tony will take the air and wait until Sam joins before blowing everything up. Clint, Bruce and Thor have all checked in, and are already in their positions on the ground as blitz attack. Once F.R.I.D.A.Y has confirmed everyone’s location away from the blast zone Tony will detonate the bombs Sam has set up inside. Got it?”
Affirmative nods came from everyone on board, as they went to do final checks on their gear and equipment.
“Be careful out there, alright?” Bucky mumbled against Y/N’s neck as she double and triple checked her ammunition count, strapping a sword to her back as well, just in case. Her obsession with Medieval fantasy shows giving her a reason to make Tony pay for her lessons.
“We’re gonna be fine,” Y/N gently patted Bucky’s cheek before giving him a peck on the cheek as he wrapped two strong hands around her waist. “We always are.”
But where typically she was right (most of the time), it was in that instance where she couldn’t be further from the truth if she’d tried.
Despite having Sam on the inside and him having gone through great lengths to make the infiltration as easy as possible, getting inside the building had been suspiciously easy, and that had set off everyone’s alarm bells, but knowing how important gathering the information was, they pressed on, keeping the thought that it could be a trap at the back of their minds at all times.
Thor, Bruce and Clint had started their ground attack two minutes before the rest had joined, with Vision guiding and disabling every system possible from back at the tower, so Tony and F.R.I.D.A.Y could put all of their focus on retaliating against the helacarriers coming their way.
“Cap, we’re in,” Natasha announced, ducking through the door, as Wanda covered her six, and Y/N lead the way in front, bullet shells flying out from her rifle.
Their comms crackled with echoes of gunfire outside as Tony lead them through the place right until they got to the main room where the whole system mainframe resided in.
“Five-minute countdown commenced,” Y/N said it out loud to inform the rest of their team, as she stood behind Wanda, who’d created a red shield of magic, keeping the assault away and them inside the room.
Five minutes until they had to get out of the building because in eight minutes time Tony and Vision, having infiltrated HYDRA’s system would blow everything to bits. If that failed, Wanda was there to provide a safety dome for the three of them, but it was just as a failsafe. Even though she now had full control of her powers, understood them better than ever, taking in a blast that will level a whole ass building was still a lot and there was no guarantee bricks and beams wouldn’t just settle right over them to then fall on top the women, she was still recuperating from a rival witch attack and it had taken out a bit more energy from her than usual.
“How’s it looking over on your end, Vis?” Wanda asked through the comms, connecting back to the rest of the team in the tower.
“The files are coming in, but too slowly,” his smooth voice invaded everyone’s earpieces. “And unfortunately F.R.I.D.A.Y’s mainframe won’t allow for a faster download, as she needs to scan everything for viruses.”
“Should’ve used a flash-drive,” Y/N mumbled under her breath as she watched the HYDRA agents line outside the room, creating a two-level firing squad basically.
“Last time we did that, the files corrupted the drive and then erased themselves,” Tony butted in, then groaned as something hard hit him. “And no one needs to hear you complain about losing the six seasons of Brooklyn Nine-Nine again.”
Y/N just rolled her eyes and steadied her rifle against her shoulder once Nat gave the go-sign. Then something beeped through everyone’s comms. The three-minute countdown before the whole building went down.
“We’re barely at seventy-six percent,” Nat’s tone was calm, but the frustration didn’t go unnoticed by others.
“Plan B then.” Wanda changed her stance a bit, but not by much as to not arouse any suspicion from the agents. If they could be taken out by the blast instead of her it’d be less energy used on her part.
“Are you sure?” Sam finally butted in, having gotten in contact with Bucky who’d given him a comm linked just with their interface. “We can try and delay the blast,” Sam said right as Bucky commanded him to do so.
“No,” Wanda stated. There were already at the two-minute mark. “Get out. We’ll take cover once the files are ours.”
“Y/N,” she heard her lover start, but she just shook her head, even though he couldn’t see it.
“Wanda’s right. Just be here to pull us out from the rubble. I have no want to climb through the wreckage.”
A deep, long, exasperated sigh echoed in her ears, and it made her smile. “You know, sometimes I really hate you.”
           “Love you too, hot stuff.”
A chorus of gags followed shortly after their little display of affection, and even though they were nowhere near one another they rolled their eyes almost at the exact same time, as Vision told Wanda to stay safe.
“You owe me a foot massage, Vis.”
           “Gross.” Y/N chuckled.
Wanda just threw her a smirk. “Imagine how we all feel about you and Bucky.”
“Okay, we’re down to sixty seconds!” Tony said, making Y/N nervously glance back at Nat.
The assassin just shook her head. “Eighty-seven percent.”
She gritted her teeth. If the building went out before they got the files they’d be stuck with just what they had. “F.R.I.D.A.Y, please speed up a bit, the place is about to get blown to bits.”
“Rerouting the files to a different server,” the A.I. was immediately on it. “Will have to do the scan later.”
“Thirty seconds, guys!” Steve shouted as whoever was still near the base scrambled to get out.
Nat’s head whipped back to the computer screen. “Almost there.”
But the whole thing seemed to have made the HYDRA agents realise something was amiss, yet it was too late for them. As Sam counted off the last five seconds, Natasha rushed to the other two women, grabbing them by their waists and crouching down while Wanda created a red dome of magic, explosions shaking the whole house.
For a second the rumbling felt more like someone shaking you awake from a deep sleep until the walls of the room exploded, raining fire, brick and metal down on them.
That would’ve been fine if not for the fact that the floor underneath them decided to disappear as well, an array of curses coming from their mouths as Wanda immediately rounded out the shield while the rest of their teammates kept nagging them to respond.
“Y/N, I swear to everything you hold dear, I will kill you myself if you die,” Bucky pretty much screamed, while she groaned as the sudden shift in balance had made her hit herself in the ribs with the rifle.
She gritted her teeth, as Wanda used more of her powers to stabilise them. “We’re fine,” she responded. “No need to bring in the cavalry yet.”
A deep sigh from what seemed like everyone echoed in her earpiece, and when Wanda was sure there’d be no second shockwaves from the blast or no debris that could fall right on top of them where she’d need to take her focus away, she flew the three women out of the ruined building and onto the grassy knoll where the team stood waiting.
Bucky was instantly next to Y/N, pulling her into his body and her lips against his once Wanda released her from the energy bubble.
“God, you’re disgusting,” Sam mumbled, and it was followed by a small yelp when someone hit him in the side.
Y/N threw him a mischievous grin when she pulled away. “Don’t be a Bitter Betty. The offer to set you up still stands.”
Sam cackled, as everyone had now regrouped and together were marching away to where the jet sat disguised between the trees. “Hard pass. You’re a worse matchmaker than Steve.”
“Hey! Amelia was an amazing girl.”
“She is except for the fact that she’s not interested in men.”
Steve’s cheeks reddened up a bit, as Tony gave him a sympathetic pat. “ ‘S not my business to ask what people’s sexuality is. And blame yourself. You’re the one who’s called Sam.”
“Oh, don’t you even –“ but his words were cut off midway as gunfire rained down on them from the sky.
Instantly Wanda threw up a shield once more, Bucky going to cover Y/N with his body, but HYDRA opening fire from the top had left their sides unprotected, and a well-aimed shot from a bazooka ripped everyone apart.
The blast was minimised thanks to Wanda and her quickly directing a part of her magic to contain it, but the missile still threw them away.
Y/N’s head was ringing, and she wasn’t sure if it was because of the loud noise of the blast, because of her having hit her head against a tree trunk, or because of all the screams from her teammates, yet she had zero time to recuperate as an agent rushed towards her, knives ready for a kill.
The first one embedded itself inside the tree, and barely not inside her head, as she moved to the side in the last minute, but a small sting still crept along the side of her head where he’d managed to split the skin.
She was up and rolling away, grabbing one of her own knives from the side of her leg, finally unsheathing her sword. There was no time to put more clips in her guns.
The first agent was quick work for Y/N, I mean he only three more knives left, and he’d been one of the unlucky ones to stand next to the building when it went off, so the shrapnel had ripped a piece of his Kevlar open giving her the perfect place to put her sword in, but the next ten were not as easy.
She was worn out, tired from having experienced two explosions and some of the agents were new backup, which meant they had more strength and energy, but she wasn’t going to let them get the best of her.
At the back of her mind, Y/N heard everyone chiming in as to where they were, how many people were after them if they needed backup, but mostly Y/N heard Bucky’s calls that he was coming to get her, even though she hadn’t requested help, she was too busy dodging bullets and knives to even respond.
She was human, she needed help, she wanted help, but then something odd occurred to her – most, from what she’d heard through the comms, were fighting maybe four to five people at a time, with the exception of Wanda, Tony, Thor and Hulk who had tanks and cars going after them, while Y/N had a group of twenty to twenty-five people to manage.
It was an ambush, it dawned on her.
She wanted to scream at herself ‘No shit, the whole thing is an ambush’, but it was an ambush of Y/N specifically, which was odd given how she was pretty much one of the few who had no direct ties to HYDRA, but that one moment of confusion was enough for someone to land a slice to the side where her own suit had a hole in it.
“Oh, we don’t want you,” a voice went through her comms that she didn’t recognise. It was muffled as if someone was whispering through someone else’s mic. “But we’ll hurt you more than ever.”
An unsettling quiet settled around before she clearly recognised Bucky breathing out a ‘no’ and then a panicked ‘Y/N!’ rip through his throat. Her head whipped to see one of the most frightening sights of her life that will forever be ingrained in her mind.
Bucky was laying on the ground, completely paralysed without the ability to even flex a muscle, blue eyes turned towards her in terror and helplessness as he watched while nine more agents stormed towards her.
She was capable, of course. He’d even experienced how capable the girl was on his own skin, and it had left his super-soldier skin bruised and battered for a few days. But right now, she was tired, she had zero ammo left, all of her knives were embedded in the heads or chests of other assailants and somewhere along the way her sword had snapped in half, leaving her with a jagged piece of steel, which was also protruding out from someone’s chest. Y/N had nothing, but her punches and kicks left. And even she knew there was no way she’d last long enough to get back to the jet in one piece.
So, gathering whatever strength remained in her body, Y/N retaliated on last time. She heard people shouting that they were coming for her, and for a moment she truly believed so when a red ball of magic hit a group of seven agents knocking them down, but when Y/N’s eyes flitted to where it’d come from, she saw the agents subdue Wanda, as they'd somehow managed to put an electroshock collar around her neck. She fell to her knees gasping in pain.
All of it, Y/N realised, every single thing that had happened had been a distraction. They’d split them apart, and the Avengers had most likely helped HYDRA accomplish their goal when the bomb went off.
For a moment she wondered why’d they’d want to take her, why not take their ‘weapons’ back, but just as quickly came the realisation of their words.
Someone grabbed her by the ankle, yanking her down.
Y/N saw stars behind her eyelids, and her teeth clanked together. She was lucky her tongue hadn’t been between them.
Bucky screamed as if someone was ripping his heart from his chest.
A gun hit her on the head.
           And then everything went black.
***
Bucky was going insane. He’d trade having his brain being put through the meatgrinder for seventy years once again if that meant Y/N was back with him, but the empty space in his bed, the unused shampoo and conditioner bottles, the dirty cup in the sink told him otherwise. She was gone, and he couldn’t do anything about it.
For two weeks he was basically a zombie, barely eating and functioning, spending most of his time by the interrogation room’s computer, following up on dead-end leads and any breadcrumb he could find, yet every single time he thought he’d gotten something as if life was mocking him, it turned into dust, just like his hope slowly was.
There was pretty much no one else but him, Sam and Wanda left in the tower, as the rest had split off into teams to go and search every left-over HYDRA base in the world. The only reason he wasn’t out there was because Steve had benched him.
“You’re compromised,” he’d said. Bucky couldn’t say he wasn’t.
Sam had stayed behind because during his last raid he’d gotten hit by some gas, rendering him pretty much useless for half a week, and no one felt comfortable enough to ask him to put his life on the line before a full recovery.
And Wanda… well, Wanda wasn’t taking the whole thing too great either, but she was still functioning, so she was just waiting for the jet to come in and fly her out to Serbia with Vision for a potential lead on Y/N.
Defeated for the night, he grabbed the coffee cup that once had been filled and trudged his way to the kitchen area. God, fucking hell, how much did it hurt to even breathe.
Just as he was about to pour himself another cup of the burning black liquid, all of his senses went haywire, and he spun around to look at the hallway of the living room. He instantly recognised the shadow standing in the middle of it, how the shape curved and sloped in such a familiar way. How could he not, when that shadow belonged to the woman, he intended to spend the rest of his life with, when his hands had memorised each and every way she was formed.
“Dollface?” his voice cracked at the end, but when she entered the light, instead of warmth filling his heart at the relief of her being back, ice-cold fear rushed through him at the sight of the black muzzle across her nose and mouth, not to even mention the HYDRA symbol in the middle of the chest of her tactical suit.
The first shot rang out right after he blinked, giving him barely enough time to dodge it, but Y/N was already on the move rushing towards him and kicking her leg out so that her knee would connect with Bucky’s chin.
A sickening crunch echoed through the room, as his head met the marble floor, bright lights flashing behind his eyes. He could even feel his teeth vibrate from the impact. It was this second which he used to somewhat regain a sense of place, that Y/N used to straddle him down, hand going behind her back to pull out a gun, but Bucky knew her. He knew her moves and how she left her left side open.
When his forehead connected to Y/N’s nose, he almost vomited at the feeling of bone-crunching against his skin, but it gave him enough time to deliver a blow to her side, disarming her before grabbing her bicep and pulling her arm behind her back, his own metal appendage wrapping around her shoulders and pulling her flush against him.
“Come on, sweetheart!” he was pleading, but his grip unyielding to her struggles. “Fight this. I know you can.”
But to his horror, HYDRA had dug their nails into her mind deeper than he ever thought was possible, as she smashed the back of her head against his nose once more, red blood spilling everywhere.
He staggered back, palm cradling his face, but he still had one free to block the fist that was coming in his direction. This caught her off guard for a millisecond, but not long enough for Bucky to do anything, as she smashed her foot against his knee, bringing him down, yet he’d expected it, using the position to his advantage and grabbing Y/N behind the legs, yanking her towards him, and making her back hit hard against the floor, dizzying and knocking the air out of the woman.
It took him three seconds to slide over to the gun she’d discarded and to stand up, and it took three seconds for her to flip herself up and aim the gun that’d still been strapped to her thigh.
Both of them were shaking, but both for different reasons. Bucky was shaking because he was making the love of his life look down the barrel of a gun, while she was shaking because the only thought on her mind was about if she didn’t finish the mission, the consequences would be more horrible than anything HYDRA had done to her before.
“I don’t want to hurt you! Please snap out of it!” he hollered but didn’t lower his weapon. It went against all of his instincts to be in that position, even when the two sparred, Bucky, to Y/N’s annoyance who was hoping for a real fight, pulled his punches. It was unnatural for him to even consider harming her.
She cocked her gun, didn’t even hesitate.
“Sorry, can’t do that. You’re my mission.”
Bucky took in one last breath.
           It hitched in his throat.
He blinked away the tears pooling at his bottom lashes.
He’d never pull the trigger.
           She steadied her aim.
           Bucky closed his eyes.
But the bullet never came. At least not for him.
The yelp of pain made him open his eyes just to see Y/N’s body jerk to the side and drop to her knee, hand clutching at her shoulder, with Sam behind her, his own gun aimed at her with a little stream of smoke coming out of the barrel.
Yet the second her shock passed Y/N swiftly turned to Sam, gun in her usable palm when her body seized up, and she fell to the ground unconscious.
Bucky was panting, as he looked to see Redwing, two blue lights on each side dying out, as it deactivated the tasers. It took him a second to realize what had happened, but then he was by Y/N’s side, pulling her body up to cradle against his own.
“What the hell, Sam?!” Bucky yelled, hovering his left hand over Y/N’s mouth. When the metal fogged over, his whole frame literally shuddered in relief, as he went on to the next job – stopping the bleeding before her breathing stopped.
“She was gonna put a bullet between your eyes!”
“You didn’t have to shoot her!”
“Oh, I’m sorry,” Sam mocked, dropping to his knees and shredding apart a kitchen towel to press against the wound. “Would you have rather had your brains splattered against the floor?”
“You had Redwing taser her! That was enough!”
“If I hadn’t shot her, Redwing wouldn’t have been able to taser her.”
He hated the fact wounding Y/N had been a necessary step in subduing her. No, Bucky told himself, not her. Not his Y/N, but whoever HYDRA had placed in her mind.
As gently as possible, he scooped up her body and with Sam in tow made his way to the med bay.
F.R.I.D.A.Y had alerted the medical staff of the situation, so they were ready when Bucky came in. Instantly two nurses took his girl from his arms and laid her down on a gurney, Helen Cho stepping up with surgical gloves.
“A through and through in the shoulder,” she remarked more for the medical records than anyone else. “She’ll have a few painful weeks of recovery, but nothing fatal.”
Bucky nodded in acknowledgement, but still, he didn’t let anyone touch Y/N without him being beside her. As Helen patched up her shoulder and strapped her down on the cell bed, he was still there beside her, both hands clutching onto her palm, not moving an inch away.
A little while after Helen had left, he felt a presence hovering behind him, and Sam stepped into the room, leaning against the wall, brown eyes looking over Y/N.
           “How is she?”
Bucky sighed, rubbing his thumb over her knuckles. They were cracked and on the verge of bleeding despite the regenerative cream, Dr Cho had applied. “Asleep,” he mumbled. “So that’s better, I guess. Gives her time to heal.”
He heard Sam shuffle around a bit, and then he entered Bucky’s peripheral as he sat down on a chair next to the bed.“It took them thirty years to break you, yet it took them two weeks to break her…” Sam said biting on his lip, and the statement made anger course through Bucky’s veins.
“Are you seriously calling her fucking weak?” He snapped looking at his fellow Avenger. “You have no idea what kind of torture they pu-“
“I’m not calling her weak,” Sam interrupted. “Y/N is one of the strongest people out there. What I’m saying is – back then it took them years to break a person… now it took them barely fourteen days… what else have they ‘improved’ on?”
The thought of Y/N having her mind ripped apart and then put back together as if she was some ragdoll made bile rise in Bucky’s throat, and it didn’t settle when he thought of how far that horrid machine had come since he’d been in one.
But as much as Bucky wanted revenge, as much as he wanted to destroy HYDRA, to make sure what happened to Y/N never happens again to anyone else, let alone if what Sam implied was true, he couldn’t leave her, not when she would need a familiar face the most.
He gulped, closing his eyes and tightening his grip on her hand to steady himself. Just the thought of her in all that pain made him go to the edge of breaking apart. “She’s gonna be alright, isn’t she?” If there was one thing Bucky appreciated from Sam it was his honesty.
“In the long run most likely. You’d be the proof of that…” Sam sighed. “But first, we gotta make sure she doesn’t shut people out.”
But that was most definitely easier said than done, given how the second Y/N woke up, which was about a day later after being knocked-out cold when she realised what had happened, it was not like a wall had magically appeared between her and anyone from the team, but a fucking fortress surrounded by an impenetrable mountainous barrier, and she was the only citizen in that mind castle. And Bucky was the first one behind the door.
It broke his heart to see Y/N pretty much shut down. She refused to eat, barely drank the water provided, and couldn’t sleep one bit, yet what hurt most was she absolutely rejected even the thought of going back to their shared room, and instead stayed in her barren cell, white walls, with a thin blanket and a paper-like pillow. It got so bad they had to put her on an IV drip so she wouldn’t waste away. But it didn’t matter to her. She was like a ragdoll.
It was about five days later when she said her first words. Y/N had her head in her hands, matted Y/H/C strands spilling between her fingers, as her nails dug deeper into her skull. That’s the position she’d been sitting in for the past five hours, not even bothering to lift her eyes as a paper plate with a meal, a single plastic spoon next to it and a paper cup of water was slid through the opening at the bottom of her cell door. She wasn’t hungry anyway. In fact, what she really wanted was to disappear from the surface of the earth, for the ground to open and be swallowed by molten lava or have a sharknado crash in and get eaten by a great white.
“How’re you feeling?” Sam asked arms crossed as he leaned against the entrance to the door. He’d been asking that since the first time she opened her eyes, but never received a response, so when the scoff she let out was almost inaudible, but he still picked up on it, he straightened out. “Just peachy,” Y/N mumbled. “Absolutely fantastic. Ten out of ten would recommend.”
           “Y/N…”
He really didn’t have anything to say. I mean what could you possibly say… but he had to at least try, given how miserable Bucky was. He’d heard him sob so loud through two closed doors and a running shower, that he had to do something.
Sam swallowed hard before entering the room and cautiously, keeping as much space as possible between the two, sat down next to Y/N. He wasn’t afraid of her. He could never be. But he knew she needed to let him closer on her own terms. “You can’t keep going like this. You can’t keep everything in. If you don’t wanna talk to the shrink, it’s fine, but at least talk to someone else…”
           “I am talking to you.”
“Yes, but you know who I mean.”
“How am I supposed to even look at him?” Her head shot up, and tears threatened to spill down her face. “How am I supposed to talk to him? To touch him, knowing I almost killed him.”
“It wasn’t you.”
“But it was!” The words were a hiss. “It was me. I understood everything I was doing, I knew who he was, I knew what we were to one another, yet…” she choked in the middle of the sentence, not wanting to say the truth. “I wasn’t going to hesitate. I was going to kill him. If you hadn’t gotten involved, one more second and Bucky would’ve been dead. Because of me.”
“HYDRA messed with your brain,” Sam stated. “I know that everyone knows that and Bucky most of all. Why do you think he couldn’t pull the trigger?”
“Because he’s an idiot.”
“No, because he’s been in the exact same situation.”
She bit her lip. All her brain was doing was screaming that Sam was right, to listen to him, he knew what he was talking about, but the guilt, the absolutely corrosive horror at herself for what she was going to do wouldn’t let common sense come through. “I just.” Y/N choked and then cleared her throat. “Just tell him I don’t want to see him. I – I can’t see him.”
Sam did know heartbreak. He’d felt it when his first girlfriend had broken up with him, he’d felt it in the army when his friends lost limbs and lives, and now he felt it looking at two of the people he’d grown closest to struggle to find one another and themselves.
He cleared his throat standing up and wiping hind palms down his thighs. “Wanda is also – “
But Y/N didn’t let him finish the sentence. “No.” She shook her head. “No one. Please.” She tucked her face against her knees. “I just wanna be alone.”
And so he left her alone. In fact, everyone did so.
For a whole month, the usually lively tower was a glass structure of sombre and pain. Everyone was hurting. Wanda had retreated to her room, sitcoms on the rerun, Vision always by her side as she tried to manage the sadness of one of her dearest friends going through such a tough time and the guilt of not being able to help Y/N, to save her from that pain. Nat and Clint along with Tony had locked themselves in one of the lower levels of the tower analysing the data she’d gathered. They needed to occupy themselves with something, otherwise, they’d be overcome by their own thoughts and they were too dark to manage at that moment. Bruce and Thor had relegated themselves to the lab doing experiment after experiment, trying to find out how HYDRA had managed to do such damage to Y/N.
Steve, however… Steve was doing quite bad. He felt probably the most amount of guilt than the rest of his teammates. He’d taken up the role of the leader, he was supposed to make sure everyone stayed safe. Yes, they were the most skilled people in the world, but they trusted him to make the best calls. And him not having taken into account a blitz attack from HYDRA after their blitz attack had broken two of his friends because Bucky was doing just as bad as Y/N, if not even worse.
He wouldn’t sleep, he couldn’t; Steve heard his cries each night until, at twelve of one AM, they’d cease, and he’d make his way to the cells. Steve had told Y/N a week after she’d been brought back that there was no reason for her to stay in there. She’d just sat on the bed, arms around her knees and staring at the wall. She didn’t go back to her room.
But each night Bucky would sit by the glass doors and look at the frame of the love of his life, curled underneath a white duvet, a single pillow underneath her head (Y/N loved pillows, she couldn’t sleep without at least four of them) body in a foetal position. She looked so broken. She was. And because of that, so was he.
It was about three AM at night, when his routine was shaken up by none other than Y/N. Typically she’d sleep through the night not even stirring, slipping into the cot at nine PM and then waking up at six AM when Helen came in to switch her IV. She was eating now, but still too little for it to be enough.
However, that night she was stirred awake by the feeling of someone watching her, not the camera that was always on but by human eyes.
That was the first time she’d seen Bucky since having woken up and regaining control of her body.
Her breath hitched when their eyes met, and his whole body straightened out. Y/N remained under the covers, while Bucky sat by the doors still. His palm pressed against the glass.
“Hi, doll.”
Two words, but that was enough for the dam to break. Tears spilt down her face, and without a second to spare Bucky had rushed inside and laid down next to her, strong arms weaving around her shaking body, as his own pain merged with hers.
All Y/N could manage to say was ‘I’m so sorry,' and it became a mantra she repeated in Bucky’s chest, hoping that somehow the words would find their way and settle beneath his skin so he could understand with his whole being how much she meant them.
“Please.” He was close to sobbing by that point, hand moving to cup her cheek. “Please let me help.”
“I can’t, Bucky! I can’t!” Y/N was close to complete hysterics by this point. “Every time I even think about you, I remember the emptiness, the absolute numbness that was in me, when I pointed a gun at your face, and I meant to kill you! I was going to pull the trigger, if not for Sam… So,” she gulped looking down at the ground, at their feet. “Tell me how the hell am I supposed to let you anywhere near me when I’m terrified of myself.”
The grip he had on her face, was tight, strong and sure. “Because it wasn’t you. I know what it’s like to have your brain scrambled around and rearranged with false truths and present them as real… but the thing is – they’re not. And you taught me that. You were the one who made me realise it, dollface. Now let me do the same for you.”
“I can’t even look at myself in the mirror because every time I do, I see that – that monster staring back at me.”
“Reflections are deceiving,” Bucky whispered, pressing his forehead against hers. “Mirrors can’t and will never show the truth. It’s a twisted, flipped and made-up version of us, and we can’t allow ourselves to believe it. It’s not us.”
And despite the pain, despite the guilt and anxiousness, Y/N chuckled, letting out a small sound of happiness for the first time in a while. “When did you get so wise, Gandalf?”
She could feel the relief that flooded Bucky’s body slowly seep into her own. “Well, re-reading ‘The Hobbit’ helped… but more so you. You taught me that. You made me realise the man that haunts my nightmares might have my face, but it’s not me. He’s not me and I’m not him.”
“Will you…” Her voice shook as she said the words as if there was a possibility, he could say no. “Will you help me?”
“You never, ever have to ask for help. I’m always here for you. Whatever you need, I’m always here. I’m so sorry, so sorry you had to go through that.”
And for the first time in six weeks did Bucky get to hug Y/N. Feeling her body melt into his almost made him have a breakdown of his own, as she wrapped her arms around his shoulders, and grabbed onto him like her life depended on the tightness of her grip.
Six weeks, almost two months without Y/N in every imaginable way had almost broken Bucky to a point of no return. Had they gone longer periods of time without seeing one another? Sure, but this was different. When the person you love is right there, but more unreachable than when they’re thousands of miles away, that’s a different kind of pain.
She didn’t release her grip form him, as Bucky shifted and sat up, her legs moving to lace around his waist on instinct. With one hand underneath her thighs the other going to take off the IV bag from the stand, he stood up and moved through the tower, finally retreating to his room, where he took off a photo frame from the wall and hung up the medical supply while gently laying Y/N down between his sheets.
She’d been in that position many times before in different states of undress, in different emotional states as well, but not once had she been alone there. And neither would she be alone now.
It was the first night Bucky slept without waking up, and when he did Y/N’s head was resting on his chest. He held her a bit tighter then.
***
The road to recovery was slow.
It started with her spending her days and nights in Bucky’s room, no longer isolating herself from him. It turned to late-night talks where they just chatted about miscellaneous things, and if she felt comfortable enough, then about every heavy thing pressing on her heart. Then she ventured off to her own room, and once evening slipped inside the room of who was her neighbour. She slept next to Wanda that night.
The next night, she and Wanda sneaked inside Nat’s bedroom, and just hung out a bit, painting their nails. When Y/N went to sleep next to Bucky, she felt as light as the light-yellow colour adorning her fingers.
On the morning of the eleventh day of her recovery, she woke up earlier and made everyone breakfast, putting some extra chocolate chips in Sam’s pancakes. He deserved it for all the trouble he’d gone through. The smile on his lips and the kiss on her head from him meant more than any thank you he could say.
But it was about a month down the line, after evenings where she’d joined in on the movie nights and had discussed the gathered intelligence from other missions as well as the tactics agents should employ when Y/N took her biggest step yet.
Bucky was laying on his bed ‘The Two Towers’ between his fingers, the metal appendage flipping the pages as gently as if they were made from butterfly wings, when Y/N came out of the bathroom, hair wet and dripping onto her nightshirt. Well, it was actually one of Bucky’s shirts, but at this point, every piece of clothing he owned belonged to her as well. Besides, in his humble opinion, she wore them better than he ever could.
           “Buck?”
“Yeah?” he hummed, flipping to another page.
“Buck I – “ she took in a breath. “I want to have sex.”
“What? Ow!” The book had slipped from his hands and the edge hit his eyebrow, making Y/N hiss, and instantly come over to try and soothe the hurt part.
“I mean – “ Bucky stuttered much like his heart. “I’d love to. Gosh, dollface, you know I’d do anything you ever wanted me. Tell me to spend forever between your legs, and I will, but… Please don’t feel like we have to. You’re still healing, and –“
“I want to,” Y/N was quick to quench his doubt, running a gentle finger over his brow. “I do. I – I need to feel you. I need to feel… I need to feel whole, and I haven’t in so long.”
His hand cupped her cheek. “You are whole. You don’t need me to complete you. You don’t need anyone to complete you.”
“I –“ She huffed, struggling to form the thought running through her brain into words. “I – I know that. At least I think so. But… but there is this part inside me, I can’t seem to heal myself, this crack that no matter how hard I try to mend just won’t do. And that’s because that part can only be filled by love. And yours is the strongest one I have in my life.”
A tear slipped down his cheek. “Oh, doll…”
Her legs slowly shifted so they were straddling him as Bucky leaned up in a sitting position, palms dropping to her hips and sliding underneath her PJs to touch the soft skin of her back.
His nose skimmed against hers, and Y/N sighed at the feeling. She’d slept like that – nose to nose curled up next to Bucky – for close to a month and a half now, but the anticipation of the kiss turned her into a bundle of nerves.
“One word,” he breathed against her skin, pressing a kiss to her collarbone before looking deeply into her eyes. “One word and we stop.”
And even though she wanted to say there was no doubt in her mind about doing it, she nodded. He needed the reassurance just as much as she did that if something happened, he’d be there for her.
When Bucky’s lips met hers, it was just like the first kiss they’d shared. A bit tentative, unsure, yet filled with so much restrained passion and pure love it was overwhelming, and Y/N’s eyes immediately filled with tears.
“Darling, let’s just not do this,” Bucky said noticing the clear pearls dripping down her cheeks, but she shook her head.
“I just missed you so much. I missed letting you love me.”
“Well, it’s a good thing people don’t need permission to love. I never stopped. I can’t imagine ever not loving you.”
His mouth was on hers once again. Bucky let Y/N lead the whole time. He didn’t deny himself from exploring her body, from feeling every crook, dip, and crevice of her form, but she was always in control.
When her shirt dropped to the floor, she was the one who started lifting it up.
When she laid down to pull Bucky on top, she was the one who flipped them over and pulled him on top.
Her hands skimmed the band of his boxers, and Bucky unconsciously ground against Y/N’s clothed core at the feeling, both letting out moans of relief at the friction.
“Can you take ‘em off?” she breathed, as Bucky left beautiful marks on her neck and chest so they could bloom through the night and could be greeted by them in the morning.
           “You sure?”
           She nodded. “Please.”
They did it together. Y/N linked her fingers behind the fabric and pulled it down his legs while he shimmied out from the boxers and kicked it to the floor.
           “Can I take yours off?”
As sure as she was about everything that was going on, there was still some hesitancy in her body, and he immediately sensed it, pulling a little bit away. “Y/N…”
When her hands went to wrap around his wrists where they rested against her hips, horror washed over Bucky like a cold shower. “Did they…?”
“No!” Y/N was immediate to answer. “No, they didn’t… but… they said after they were done with me after they turned me into their puppet… after they’d make me hurt you, you’d never want to touch me. That, in your last moments, you’d only have hate in your heart for me, and I’d have to live with that for the rest of my life.”
He gently put a finger underneath her chin and lifted her head. “Even when I was staring down that barrel, all I could think about was how much I love you. How I’d give my life for you even if you were the one taking it. I could never hate you.”
A violent sob ripped through her chest. “I don’t deserve you.”
“You deserve the world, and I’ll try to give as much of it to you as I can.”
She couldn’t take much more of his confessions because Y/N’s chest was already as full as it could be of love, so instead, she pulled Bucky back down for a passion-filled kiss, while shimmying out from her own underwear.
           “Condom?”
“No,” Y/N shook her head. “Not this time. Need to feel you as you are.”
           “You sure?”
She nodded. “Helen put me back on the pill about a month ago.”
Bucky shuddered, nodding. “Alright. Okay. But I need to make sure I don’t hurt you first.”
Y/N was about to say he could never hurt her, when two of his fingers slipped along her folds, cutting her words off in favour of the groan of pleasure.
“Gotta take care of my girl the right way.”
A moan seeped into Bucky’s skin when he pushed a cold metal digit into her tight entrance. His arm had the added feature to feel things if he wanted or switch it off when he didn’t want to, which was a nice thing, especially during missions (he’d forgotten to do so one time and when a bullet bounced off, it wasn’t like a bee bumping against glass, hot pain had rippled through his whole arm, so it was a good idea on Shuri’s part), but this time it was on, and the absolutely exquisite pressure and warmth that squeezed around his digits was enough to make him grind against the mattress to alleviate his own growing pressure.
“Bucky, please,” Y/N practically mewled, eyes screwed shut, nails digging into his skin, making him groan in pleasure. He’d forgotten how delicious the sounds were and how close to the edge just the feeling of her nails marking half-moons into his back could bring him.
“Fuck,” he swore leaning up to kiss her once more, while he increased the speed of which his fingers were going in and out of her, while his thumb rubbed circles around her clit, and when he hotly breathed against her neck to ‘soak him all down to his elbows’ Y/N’s eyes rolled to the back of her head and she arched up from the bed as an orgasm shattered her world.
Gently he coaxed her through the orgasm while muttering praises against her mouth.
“You’re so beautiful,” Bucky sighed leaning to rest on his elbows. “So fucking gorgeous.”
Y/N smiled, stroking his cheek. “You’re beautiful too, Bucky. More than you’ll ever know or will let yourself believe me.”
The crooked smirk which he threw her reminded the one from Steve’s tales of him and his skirt-chasing days. “Guess you’ll have to convince me.”
           “With pleasure.”
Her hand snaked down to where he’d been running the tip of his cock between her folds, before gently pressing him down so he could easily slide inside. When he was sheeted a moan of satisfaction came from both of them.
It was like homecoming. Like curling up in a warm bed on a cold winter’s night. It was just right.
“God, I could stay like this forever.” Bucky tucked a strand of hair behind Y/N’s ear.
“We have forever and then some.”
A look she could not figure out crossed his face. It was like absolute joy mixed with fear and terror. “You promise?”
Y/N kissed him, trying to pour all of her love into the single act. “With everything I have in me.”
He took that as the cue that he could move and experimentally rolled his hips towards hers. Bit by bit he picked up the pace, breaths turning into pants broken up by moans, sweat beading along his skin, a small burn appearing in his knees, but even that discomfort couldn’t overshadow the heavenly pleasure rippling through his veins.
She’d always been the epitome of beauty and love, that’s how completely Bucky had fallen for her, and he could only hope he was the same for her.
“Bucky,” she choked out. “So close.”
“Yeah?” His vision was starting to go white at the edges.
“Mhm – ohh!” The confirmation turned into a squeal when he hit just that right spot, he concentrated all his thrusts to match it, and soon enough both of them were falling over the edge, clinging onto the other as if they were the last lifeline that existed for them.
“Hey,” Bucky cooed, opening his eyes and seeing how furrowed Y/N’s brow was, how hard she was fighting to resurface. “Come back to me. Come back, doll.”
Slowly, Y/N’s breathing evened out, her trembling became small shudders from the aftershock of the pleasure, and her lids fluttered, gaze meeting his.
           She’d come back.
She’d always come back to her home.
           To Bucky.

of almost failed heists and romantic advice
For the @grishaversebigbang mini bang! First time writing the crows, it’s been a challenge. I had the incredible and emotional honor to see some beautiful art made for this fic by @streckenweise-okay [here] , @j-wirth [here], @davonysus [here]. You are all talented and amazing <3  Summary: an easy undercover job becomes not only a chance to revisit some old friendships with Nina back in town, but also the perfect occasion for a romantic intervention and some dating advice for our favorite Bastard of the Barrel.
ao3 link
Kaz Brekker, the Bastard of the Barrel, a forgotten Rietveld. His figure hid itself in the many names he had been called, in the many tales of sorrow he had inflicted. He did not need a reason, nor to rob or brake, nor to wreak havoc on the filthy streets of Ketterdam. Swift as the sky-splitting dive of a crow on his prey. You would feel him coming, in the tense silence shattered by the rhythmic beating of a raptor-headed cane on bricks. Kaz Brekker, who did not need a reason, or concealed the ones who mattered. The same Kaz Brekker, however, who did not have a valid reason for choosing to bring the three biggest headaches of his life along with him on this wretched job. A sharpshooter with an absurd taste in fashion, a Grisha witch as annoying as his broken leg and a wayward merchant’s son he had spent way too much time babysitting.
A strike of genius on his part. On top of that, he had chosen an undercover job, like they had the slightest ability not be noticed. Except for Nina; that girl blended everywhere like whisky. She was now strolling back to them with an excited gleam in her eyes, sipping on a glass of wine. She giggled happily. “Relax, Kaz. It’s a party.”
He cut her a glare from the corner in which he was standing, stiff and broody.
“Where the hell are the two lovebirds?”
“At the buffet. Do you know they have a chocolate fountain?”
“If it doesn’t drop gold”, Nina arched a brow at him, “I am fairly sure I don’t care for it.”
They were interrupted by the brilliant flash of color of Jesper’s suit and his brazen laugh. He had an arm thrown around Wylan’s shoulder; the merchling’s  cheeks were flushed and his hair ruffled. He seemed slightly uncomfortable or about to throw up. For all the kruges, how much had Jesper let him drink? At least they did not have a particularly difficult role to play. Nina planted a kiss on Wylan’s cheek.
“This is so fun!”, she exclaimed, delighted by the situation. Kaz glared at her again.
“A job it’s not supposed to be fun.”
“Take your brooding mood out the window, Brekker”, Nina waved a dismissive hand at him. “What would a job be without fun?”
“Terribly dull”, Jesper winked.
“Annoyingly painful”, offered Wylan with a hiccup. They turned to Kaz.
“Adequately profitable.”
His friends cast their eyes heavenward. Jesper snatched other glasses , pretending not to see Kaz’s threatening look. The party was grand, held in the home of a Council’s member from whom they were supposed to steal some documents held in a safe in his study. The job was easy to say the least, so when they had learned that Nina was in town, she had tagged along. Kaz wanted to wack himself on the head with his cane for this wretched idea; apparently, they had taken this as an excuse to party and reminisce old times more than an occasion to actually help Kaz make some money. Nina surveyed the room.
“I wish Inej was here”, she whined. Kaz had never been one to pray, so it was not surprised when the Saints ignored his pledge to make Nina drop the argument. Instad, she turned to him with a smug smirk.
“How is it going between the two of you?”
Kaz tapped his cane on the floor, avoiding the heartrender’s eyes. Maybe she would shut up if he ignored her. Was he not radiating a general air of murderousness and danger, enough to convince his nosy friend to leave him be? Well, not enough. It just made her do something even worse and refer to the other two headaches.
“Kaz is a hopeless cause.”
“He’s not asked her out yet? Not even a romantic snack in between threatening people and skewering them with knives?”
Jesper shrugged his shoulder, nudging Wylan closer. “We offered to do it for him”, he noted.
“You did”, Wylan peered at thim. “I want to keep my head on my neck.”
“Why hasn’t he?”, asked Nina, considering Kaz, still ignoring them.
“I don’t think he’s familiar with the concept of asking someone out. Or even asking someone for anything, mainly bossing people around.”
Kaz adjusted his tie. “I’m standing right beside you.”
“It’s not hard, Kaz. Just buy some flowers and smile.”
Jesper laughed at Nina’s idiotic advice. Were they actually trying to get assassinated right now? Another thought paved the way in his mind. Was it an idiotic advice, though? He could admit that anything not involving schemes or robbery was not an area of expertise for him. And he had been meaning to do something...nice?
“You’re asking Dirtyhands to smile?”, asked Jesper. Nina huffed.
“Can it be that hard?”
“You’ll see. Kaz, smile at me.”
Kaz had two roads in front of him: for some reason, he chose the insane one and indulged Jesper, curling his lips upward. An uncomfortable silence dawned over them.
“All the Saints and their suffering”, Nina exclaimed.
“Is he about to murder someone?”, Wylan asked. Nina burst out laughing.
“That is your i-am-asking-you-out smile?”
“It’s terrifying”, considered the merchling.
“Positively daunting”, his boyfriend confirmed.
“For the love of Inej’s Saints drop the smile. Stick with the flowers.” She eyed him from upside down, critical. “And fix that dreadful hair.”
Now the choice laid between leaving them all here or trying to find a way to finish this wretched job. Since the second option included a mouthful reward, he went with it. He eyed the owner descending the stairs with his guards. That was their cue.
“You all know what to do.”
To their credit, they all snapped to attention when he called them. Nina strode behind the owner, fluffing her hair, while the three of them disappeared silently toward the upper floor. Silently. As silently as they could, Wylan being half drunk and Jesper being...well, Jesper. What one does for some kruge, thought sourly Kaz. He did glance at his reflection in the mirror, trying a half smile as they ascended the stairs. But no one needed to know that.
***
The safe had scarcely even been fun to crack. Kaz slipped the document in his jacket, scanning the study. Who knows what one could find that people left unguarded. Jesper and Wylan were outside, keeping control on the stairs. The situation seemed under control, so he did have some spare time to search for something precious. He approached a drawer, flicked a pin in the keylock and -
BOOM
A loud explosion resonated on the floor, rattling the walls. Definitely not a good sign. And definitely a sign that his henchmen raised some hell. Kaz sprinted out, only to find an absolute mayhem had been unleashed, and at the centre of this chaos, sure enough, stood his two royally idiotic friends, covered in dirt and pieces of furniture, gazing at each other with utter shock on their faces like they hadn’t just made a smoke bomb explode. The one that was supposed to be an emergency to cover their escape and was now invading the house.
“What the hell did you do?!”
Screams rose below them; Jesper scratched some dust from his jacket and rolled his revolvers out, grinning in Wylan’s direction, apparently unfazed by how much they had just screwed up.
“Wylan got carried away”, he shrugged his shoulders. Wylan flushed violently, jaw dropped in his boyfriend’s direction.
“You pushed me against a wall! I told you I had the smoke bomb in my pocket!”
“Were they making out again on the job?”, Nina rushed in their direction, her gorgeous face lit up with amusement as she struck down one of the guards running up the stairs with a flick of her wrist, a dart bone flying out of her cuff.
“It’s Jesper’s fault! He’s always trying to...to…”, Jesper arched a brow at Wylan.
“Yes?”
“Entice me!”
Kaz blew out an exasperated grunt, pushing them toward the background door. “Move!”, he seethed, running to work the lock. Dirtyhands getting killed on a saints forsaken robbery, perfect irony. With a quick look, he realized the damn lock had been reinforced with Fabrikator’s craft. He signaled Jesper, who practically squealed with amusement.
“Do I get to use my powers?” The hard glare he earned from Kaz seemed to be enough for him to get on with his work. Nina turned, shooting other dart bones toward the stairs. Quick steps and screams were echoing through the buildings, and smoke was clearing. “You might wanna hurry up, Jes!”, she shouted over her shoulder.
“We might have a problem”, the sharpshooter mumbled, as the lock literally melted on itself, effectively sealing the door closed. “I’m still getting the hold on - “
He was interrupted by another deafening explosion, as Wylan threw another device which detonated on the wooden stairs shredding them into pieces.
“Do you all have to keep destroying our ways out?!”
“I’m sorry!”, screamed Wylan over the echoing thrum of the bomb, his gaze shifting to a window that opened up to the roof.
“Do not even think about it”, Kaz pointed his cane at him.
“Either we take a page from Inej’s book or we get arrested, what do you choose?”, Nina asked grudgingly, starting to climb on a cupboard. Saints, he was going to kill them all. Jesper and Wylan followed suit, making their way out on the roof and helping Kaz up. He shot a murderous look at Nina, who was eyeing him as he not at all gracefully moved up and shut the window closed behind him, swearing to every known Saints in Kerch.
“Since you are so bad at this, you should try to compliment Inej about it and maybe she’ll teach you something.”
“Start fleeing before I catch you, Zenik.”
Shots began firing from below them, grazing Kaz’s arm. Nina erupted in a grin.
“Time to run, Brekker.”
And so they did. Extremely far from how Inej would have done it. Loudly, stumbling throughout Ketterdam’s rooftops, helping each other - as much as he hated to admit it, mostly Kaz - on the slippery tiles and the narrow eaves. Ketterdam buildings left little space to breathe, being conveniently close that they could jump from one to the other. Kaz lost track of time, though his bad leg felt like they’ve been running for hours. Jesper stopped abruptly as they neared the docks, crunching on his knees and howling a breathless laugh.
“That was fun.”
Nina giggled, slouching on the rooftop they had stopped on. “Ease up boys, we lost them ages ago”, she exhaled, closing her eyes toward the moonlight and leaning back. Kaz tentatively seated himself behind her, stretching his leg.
“If this easy job ends up with me not being able to walk, vengeance will be coming.”
Wylan and Jesper slumped down on his side, ignoring his dreadful look. Wylan peered at Kaz with a sly smile.
“Jesper has stolen something fit to celebrate a successful heist.”
The sharpshooter grinned, pulling out a bottle of cherry wine from nowhere and uncorking it with a whistle of joy. He passed it around as their cheerful chatter filled the night’s quiet. They were crazy. Crazy, reckless, and still idiots. Yet, Kaz couldn’t help but feel a little proud of his ragtag band of misfits. So he did not protest when Jesper handed him the wine, and he even threw a crooked half smile at him. The night began to wear off with every sip.
“So”, started Jesper at some point, snatching the bottle from him, “about our advice?”
It had to be the wine for Kaz to answer this. “I guess I can try it.”
Wylan huffed and gave him a knowing look.  “Just be yourself, Kaz. Inej likes you like that.”
“Ever the romantic”, Jesper winked at him, making him flush. Again.
“Aside from that”, Nina propped herself up, turning to him, her lips quirked and her face lit up with happiness, cheeks red from the wine. “I still suggest the flowers. You know her favourites. And you might want to get ahead with those, Brekker'', she added, pointing her finger toward the horizon; over Ketterdam’s rooftops, the moonlight shone on the silent streets, reflecting on the waves that hit the docks. There, against the sky lit up by stars, stood the profile of a sharp ship, a flag Kaz knew by heart flying over the mast, its edges turning his stomach upside down as it entered the harbour.
“Our Wraith is coming home.”

[ Prankster Summer Rose and Team STRQ’s beginnings as told by Qrow.]  - mod lilac
A small excerpt from the Schnee Fried Chicken vs Red Robin AU on the Frosen Steel Server, though this piece can be considered independent.]
And thus Qrow regaled his two nieces with stories about Summer in school.
"Though getting married and taking care of you two made her chill out quite a bit, make no mistake that your mom was a horrible little hellion to the point where Beacon's Headmaster Ozpin once commented that he would rather resign than live through that period of his life again," Qrow laughed as he saw the expectant looks on Ruby and Yang.
"Part of that was because Summer took getting flung off a launch pad at Initiation personally."
---
"What do you mean by landing stra-AAAAAAAAAAAAAAA"
---
"So Summer made it her personal mission in life to prank him to death," Qrow explained, "So for four years and thirty-two pranks in total, the Headmaster had suffered through having the legs of his chair cut so that he'd dramatically fall in place and give him a scare, his hot chocolate spiked with laxatives which was why he began carrying a thermos, the toilets in his room and nearby areas being loaded with either cherry bombs or colorless jello, a small device at the bottom of his cane that would only beep at random, delayed intervals which made him think he was developing a hearing problem, his bedroom door superglued shut, and various other inconveniences."
His two nieces stared in awe, never having heard this side of their mother.
"She was never really caught but by that time, everyone knew who was responsible, and that's because when Summer pranked everyone else, she didn't have any qualms about letting people know who did it. Hell, I'm pretty sure if the Headmaster had just asked, Summer would admit it to his face. But Oz was the type that never did anything unless he had concrete evidence, and Summer never left anything to find as a matter of professionalism."
"What was Mom like with...the rest of her team?" Yang asked after some hesitation. Qrow looked over at Yang, knowing it was a roundabout way of asking about her birth mother.
"So my team...was your mom and dad and me and my sister, Raven. We were team STRQ, and we were the best of the best," Qrow said confidently before he tilted his up nose snootily with a shifty gaze. "And I was the bestest of all."
"Keep bragging," Yang retorted with a smirk.
Ruby laughed.
Qrow threw his hands up in exasperation. "Okay fine you caught me. Your mom scared me to death." More giggling from his nieces.
"Seriously I think the bravest ones in my team are your dad and my sister for marrying her." The girls didn't bat an eye with the polyamory; after all, they were in a family of Hunters and Huntresses. It was pretty common.
"So your mom ever do that thing where she smiles but it's not cause she's happy but because she's really mad," he gave an exaggerated shiver.
A pair of nods.
"Yeah, your mom did that to me and my sister on the very first day we made teams," Qrow said, "We kinda ganged up on her in a fight to become the leader of the gro--"
"Hey, don't look at me like that," Qrow whined as his audience stared incredulously at him, "I was sixteen and dumb. Besides after I told you about your mom and the Headmaster, do you really think she suffered in silence?"
"...So what'd she do?" Yang asked expectantly with a smirk.
"Well, first of all, the Headmaster made your mom leader in the first place. It's why it was named team STRQ." Qrow explained, "my sister and I didn't agree and so we decided to have a fair free-for-all."
"Aaaand then we double-teamed your mom first." He ignored the again judging stares, "Naturally your mom complained, and I was stupid enough to tell her that everything's fair in war. My sister who shared my brand of stupidity agreed with her. And then your mom smiled and also agreed with me, thus we smugly thought we won. So... what did you think your mom did?"
"She pranked ya to death!" Ruby laughed.
"Yup. Got in one, kiddo!” he ruffled Ruby’s hair, “For two weeks, we had to watch everything we eat, wear, and touch cause we were scared it was rigged with something. And it still wasn't enough. And because I was again young and dumb, I complained, and Summer threw my words back at me, "Everything's fair in war." And then gave me the not-smile, which I began to learn was the scariest thing ever."
"What'd she do though?" Yang smirked and leaned in, clearly gleeful at his suffering.
"Well...." Qrow said with an amused smirk as he counted his fingers , "I was subjected to itching powder in my clothes - my shirt, my socks, and my underwear which was awful, hair dye in my shampoo that turned pink in the sun, a stink bomb detonating when I blindly hit my alarm clock - though I think your mom suffered as much as I did with that one." He laughed, "Her words exactly were, as she was choking in our room, 'Okay. I didn't think this through...' But the one that convinced me to surrender was waking up on my bed in the middle of the fountain. At that point, I at least was smart enough to surrender when I did-"
"But not enough to not go against her in the first place," Yang cajoled.
"Hey, we can't all be as smart as you brats are," Qrow laughed as he ruffled both their heads to varying complaints and smiles.
"But I can at least say I was smarter than my sister who still didn't surrender after that. And that's when I discovered why the Headmaster made her the leader. Cause she's an evil genius - which is probably why she has such smart daughters." He smiled before continuing, "One time my sister got tagged by glitter bombs, and she saw your mom laughing right in front of her. So she started screaming murder and chased after your mom. Now given that it took the two of us to fight your mom, it probably wasn't smart on my sister's part, but seeing your mom run probably gave her a bit of confidence."
"And that's because she wanted to lead her to hell. Your mom rigged a section of the Emerald Forest with traps. I don't know how she got that many smoke or paint bombs, but the Emerald Forest became the Rainbow Forest in the span of a single day. "
"The final straw was when Summer found these small Dust-powered Van de Graaff genera-"
"Van de whaa?" Ruby asked.
"You remember the science museum where there was this big orb with electricity inside it, and when you touched it, it made your hair go up? The one that made Yang looked like a blonde porcupine."
"Hey!"
"Well, Summer bought a bunch of portable Dust-powered ones, and she hid them everywhere. She even replaced our dorm's doorknob with one and painted it over to look like the doorknob. That combined with the week of utter paranoia and lack of sleep she's lived because Summer could finally focus her evil mind on one person, my sister finally raised the white flag," Qrow grinned.
"I'm surprised that you all managed to get along after all that," Yang said after laughing at the mental imagery, "What happened?"
"Well about that..." Qrow said with a somewhat embarrassed air, "My sis and I. You could say we were the bumpkiest of country bumpkins back then. The most we knew about fine cooking was throwing some meat and wild herbs in a pot and calling it a meal. Beacon's cafeteria was, to us at the time, amazing."
"And then?"
"Well, your mom didn't have time to actually cook during those first three weeks cause she was too busy making our lives miserable," Qrow explained, "So after we surrendered, she promised no pranks and offered to make dinner. Admittedly, we were planning to be petty and saying whatever she cooked was bad, but..."
"When your mother brought out the spread from the dorm kitchen - juicy seasoned chicken that practically fell off the bone, soft fluffy bread fresh from the over, braised glistening savory pork, sweet chocolate chip cookies right out of the oven, I think we were too enraptured with the meal to make any complaints. And then we dug in. My sister almost ate herself sick." he laughed before adding with a smug tilt of his head, "I of course was more sophistica-"
"Bull."
The expected retort didn't come from the girls in front of him but from behind him. He turned around to see a smiling Tai who had just gotten in with several takeout bags.
"Dad!" both girls excitedly scrambled to help out with the bags.
"Don't believe your uncle," Tai laughed, "He pigged out most of all. At least Raven could walk back under her own power. We literally had to roll Qrow out of the dorm kitchen that day cause he couldn't even move! And he swore to behave as long as he could eat like this every day."
"Ouch. Couldn't you leave me a little bit of my dignity, Tai?" Qrow faked grumpiness amidst the girls' peals of laughter.
"There's no way you could have dignity left after we had to roll you across one floor and up a flight of stairs," Tai smirked, "Besides I think Summer said it best." He raised the pitch of his voice slightly in imitation while facepalming, "If I'd known I could buy you off with a well-made meal, I wouldn't have spent all that money on pranks."

Solangelo - "Lethal Enemies" - One-Shot
Summary: Nico and Will are venturing through Tartarus, and there they meet a familar god: Eros.
Word Count: 2905
SPOILERS: Tower of Nero, Burning Maze; TW: Homophobia/Internalized Homophobia, some violence (and blood but it's not too descriptive), outing mentions
Read on AO3
Heat pulses in the air, scorching Nico’s skin as he and Will stumble through the darkness. He isn’t sure how long they’ve been down here, but his body is already aching and screaming from all the effort of fighting monsters and trying to survive.
Will’s arm brushes against Nico’s, and the child of Hades almost jumps back at the touch. His skin feels feverishly hot, bursting with unnatural heat. When Nico looks up at him, he realizes that Will’s face is severed with scratches, gashes, sweat, and an overall pale wash. Small holes smoke in his CHB T-shirt, and his jeans are ripped at the sides from where a monster clawed him.
At the sight of him, Nico’s chest constricts with sympathy and guilt. As much as he loves Will for coming with him, he knows the kind of pressures that would put on both of them. Will looks so out of place in such a dark, gloomy world, where only terror and misery reside.
To Nico, Will is the complete opposite of terror and misery. He’s the sunshine after a terrible rain storm; he’s the sweetness after the sourness. But here, in the raging darkness, Will looks washed out. He doesn’t belong here.
Tartarus is Nico’s terrifying, unspeakable past; Will is his bright future. The two should not be clashing.
This hell was made to ruin. And it seems like it’s doing its job on Will, too.
Nico slips his fingers into the blond’s and squeezes, pushing his own feverish warmth into his boyfriend. Will turns his face to Nico’s and, for the first time, Nico sees a crack in his eyes - usually so sky blue, they’ve turned almost gray with fear. He’s breaking.
Nico leans into Will’s side, trying to find solace in the overbearing darkness. “It’s only going to get worse,” he mutters.
“Then I’m glad I’m not doing it alone.”
Nico offers a wavering smile, and they continue walking. For the most part, it seems like they’re safe from any monsters, but Nico knows from past experience that he can never be too careful. His eyes swerve all around them, watching out for any new monsters, and his Stygian sword pulses in the darkness.
After a few moments, there’s a shift in the air. It’s still warm and unbearable, but there’s a new scent - like a faint waft of the outside world, the breath of a fresh summer day. It smells almost like Will.
The blood in Nico’s veins buzzes and he stops immediately. Fear courses through his body. Will staggers as the child of Hades grips his wrist and pulls him back. At the sight of Nico’s ashen face, Will leans in. “Everything good?” he asks.
“That smell,” he whispers. “What does it smell like to you?”
“Well,” Will says, eyebrows knitting together as he thinks, “it kind of smells like you, weirdly? Like, the earth after a rainy day.”
That’s all Nico needs to know before panic settles in his chest. His mind crawls with memories and the pain of humiliation he faced just a year ago. Jason, Croatia, Diocletian’s spectre.
“No,” he mutters. “Will, we need to leave.”
Without waiting for a response, Nico tightens his fingers over Will’s wrist and starts to pull him away. But a voice murmurs, “Oh, leaving so soon, child of Hades?” and Nico knows right then and there that he and Will are trapped.
The voice pours over the heat like melted chocolate, smooth and deep, but a dagger of betrayal resides in it. Nico’s heart thuds on overtime and his nerves flair with anxiety, but he knows he can’t go anywhere. This meeting was bound to happen.
“Eros,” Nico hisses.
“Ah,” the voice murmurs. “So you recognize me.”
The god isn’t visible, but Nico can feel his cold presence anyway. “Who would forget such a jackass?”
A low, rumbling laugh echoes around them. Will’s hand releases its hold on Nico’s and lingers over the gun at his side. Nico raises his sword.
“Well, well, well,” the god says, “it looks like you’ve got a new friend here with you. How sweet.”
“Show yourself,” Will demands. “Face us like the hot-headed deity you are.”
Though he can’t see it, Nico still senses the raised eyebrow over the god’s eye. “Oh, he’s feisty, too. You sure have won with him.”
“Stop talking about him like he’s some kind of object,” says Nico. “You heard him. Show yourself.”
The same laughter crashes over them, and after another moment, a being appears. His long, black hair gleams despite the absence of light, and his red eyes glimmer maliciously in the darkness. They stare right through Nico, stabbing him in the face, and suddenly Nico’s hurtling to the past, to the misery. He scowls at the god.
Eros’ wings spread around him, the feathers fluttering a little as he shifts. He crosses his arms and offers a sharp smirk to Will and Nico. “Aw, look at you two,” he purrs. “So young and in love. Ready to fight together in Tartarus.”
“What do you want?” Nico asks, brandishing his sword. “Why are you bothering us?”
Eros’ shoulders rise and fall gracefully in an innocent shrug. “Oh, nothing, really. I was really just hoping to see how you were. I heard you were traveling down here, and I thought I would check on your progress.”
“Well, great. You’ve checked. You can leave.”
He laughs again, a low, tumbling laugh that heightens Nico’s rage. “Ever the sarcastic, child of Hades. No, listen. I can help you.”
“And how will you do that?” Will asks, raising an eyebrow. “You’re nothing more than a love god.”
“Have the Aphrodite children taught you nothing, pitiful child?” Eros hisses. “Love plays an important role in life.”
“I don’t see how love is helpful here,” Nico says, spreading his arms to gesture to the rest of Tartarus. “All I see is pain and misery. You can leave.”
“Oh, but I see where love can become important.” Eros raises a brow and tips his head to the boys. “Are you two not in love?”
Nico blushes. “That is not of your concern.”
“I can influence a lot,” he promises. “Especially the way you two act together. Percy Jackson and Annabeth Chase - the two you were oh-so-jealous of only some time ago - came here together. They got away safely. I can influence a lot between you and Will Solace.” He steps forward, and against his lips, a dagger-like smile beams at Nico.
The son of Hades crosses his arms. “I happen to remember that I got through here on my own. Love does not solve all problems.”
Eros raises an eyebrow. “Does it not?” He begins to circle around Will and Nico, glaring at them with his ruby-red eyes. “Tell me, Nico, does Will not make you feel special? Does he not help you feel better?”
Rage billows up in Nico’s chest, pushing against his sternum. “I am happy with Will. But he does not solve my problems, just the way I do not solve his.”
“But you are happier with him, is that right?” Another smile flashes across his mouth. “And who are you to thank for him, hmm? If it were not for me, you would not be here today with him. You would not be happy accepting who you are.”
Nico’s anger rises up to this throat, hot waves of rage crashing against the back of his neck. He surges forward, but Will pulls him back. “No,” he whispers. “He’s a god, Nico. Don’t try.”
Nico glares at Will, but deep down, he knows Will is right. So he sighs and stands still.
“I would not be happy?” he growls. Nico's muscles tighten with rage. “You humiliated me. I wasn’t ready to admit who I was; I wasn’t ready for any of that.” This time, despite Will’s insistence, Nico rushes forward, his anger pulling him toward the god. “It was my choice, and you stole it from me! And you’re congratulating yourself?”
“It’s not like there were many people there,” the god scoffs. “Only Grace.” He pouts. “I heard about the demigod’s untimely death, however. Terribly sorry.”
Nico shakes his head. He knows Eros is just trying to get under his skin by mentioning Jason. He can’t let himself get distracted.
“Your outing of me was not something to celebrate,” hisses Nico. “I spent so much time hating myself, hating Percy because of who I was. When you forced me to blatantly admit that I was gay” - a burst of confidence blooms in Nico’s chest as he says the last word - “I had never felt so violated. I only hated myself more, because I was terrified of who I was. The entire experience was humiliating. You ruined me.”
“Did I?” Eros asks. “The first step in accepting yourself was to admit you were gay in the first place. I pushed you to accept yourself.” He gestures to Will. “Now look where you are! Happy and in love with a boyfriend! Is there anything better?”
Nico’s chest heaves as another wave of rage suffocates him. His body shakes with anger. He feels like a detonating bomb; in just a few seconds, he will explode and destroy everything in the area.
“You only made things worse,” mutters Nico. “I spent days worrying about who was watching me, worrying about how much people knew. I hated myself every moment, every second afterwards, even more so than before you forced me to admit that I was gay.” Nico takes a deep breath, his chest expanding as he does so. “Maybe you’re right - maybe I did need to admit to myself who I was. But it should have been on my own terms. You did not help me accept myself; all you did was make me tell myself what I already knew. You made the entire process of accepting myself more difficult than it needed to be. When I spat out that I liked Percy, I felt… I felt violated. I felt like someone had stabbed me right through the back. I… I hated myself more than I ever did at that moment. I thought it was the end; I thought right then and there, I would die. Not from embarrassment, but from someone else’s hands. My own hands. I thought there was nothing more humiliating than to be forced to tell someone I didn’t know that I was some kind of disgusting creature. I felt so dehumanized.” Nico glares at Eros. “Don’t feel happy that you did that. You did not improve my life; only I did that. Not Will, not you, not any of my friends. Me. Do not take credit for my accomplishments.” Hot fury seethes in Nico’s core, washes up over his chest, crashes against his throat, trickles down his arms and legs. His lungs expand and exhale as he breathes hard, each breath like acid burning down his sinuses. “My work has been looked over too much, ever since I first learned of demigods. Do not take the credit for my self-improvement, because you are one of the many reasons I was destroyed in the first place.”
For a moment, no one speaks. An eerie silence lingers in the air, holding Nico in a chokehold. Eros simply watches him, his eyebrows lowered and a fierce, judgmental, angry look glowing in his red eyes. Will tilts his head at Nico and offers the ghost of a smile. I'm proud of you, he seems to be saying.
Nico doesn’t return it, but even then, a little flower of confidence blooms in his chest.
Eros crosses his arms once more, airing his defiance out into the open. Arrogance sparks along his wings. He raises a brow at Nico. “You have become more bold in yourself. Self-assured.” A sharp smile grates against his mouth. “And that would not have happened had you not admitted you were gay at all. I may have humiliated you, but in the end, you have become stronger through your pain. You have become sturdy, grounded into the world. I have led you to your happiness.” He offers a secretive smile to Will. “And your happiness is your boyfriend. You’re welcome.”
Nico watches Eros, glaring at his over-confident face, at his casual posture, at the pride in his eyes. He is too assured in himself, too hot-headed.
The sword in Nico’s hand grows heavier, a hum buzzing through the metal. Irritation and anger swirl in his chest, creating a tornado in his body, and he’s drowning, drowning in his rage, in his memories, in his untamed emotions.
He knows what he has to do.
Nico raises his sword, and, without even thinking, he slashes the god’s shoulder.
“Nico!” Will cries, but it’s too late. Eros cries out and hisses through his teeth, holding his arm in his hand. His angry red eyes gleam right at the child of Hades, projecting all his rage and pain right to Nico’s core. The demigod merely stands still, waiting for the god’s next move.
“Oh, you arrogant hero!” Eros cries. Golden ichor slips past his fingers, dripping onto the ground, and for a strange, fleeting moment, Nico finds that it looks beautiful in the darkness, sparkling where it should not be.
Only pain belongs in Tartarus. Nico wants to hurt Eros the way he hurt him.
Nico knows the act was stupid, but he can’t help the grin that takes over his face. Laughter bubbles out of his chest, sprinkled with something maniacal, something angry. “What’s wrong, my lord?” Nico purrs, leaning against his sword. “You said love fixes pain. Can it fix you?”
Eros snarls at Nico, but the son of Hades doesn’t care. Nothing beats the thrill that thrums in his body at the sight of the god being so frustrated.
Eros pants through the pain, his face turning red. “You think you are something special, don’t you, child?”
Nico laughs, the sound of it ironic in such a painful place. The laugh overflows with repressed pain, with hot anger.
That laugh belongs here in Tartarus, with its madness and rage.
“Oh, Eros,” Nico mutters. “I spent so long thinking I deserved nothing. I spent so long thinking everywhere I went, misery followed me. I have never felt special.” He glances up and down at the god. “You asked me if even Will makes me feel special. Well, no. He makes me… feel good. But you know what makes me feel actually special?”
Despite his rage, curiosity strangles Eros’ eyes. He waits for a response, hissing as more ichor spills out of his godly being.
“What makes me feel good, what makes me feel like I have a worth in this world,” Nico says as a smile creeps over his face, offering him a maniacal glow, “is when I provide justice to those who have done wrong. Originally I always believed Death has no mercy, only justice.” He slashes again at Eros, who cries louder and falls to his knees. He pants through the pain. “Well, I suppose there are other ways to provide justice.”
Nico runs his finger through the golden ichor that gleams over his sword. Touching it, Nico’s finger tingles with power. He looks at Eros again. “What makes me feel special is when I defeat entitled assholes like you, my lord.”
“You have not defeated me,” the god growls.
“No, not physically,” Nico agrees. “But I have defeated the pain you have caused me.” He touches the tip to Eros’ chin, balancing it mere millimeters from his skin. The point gleams red as it reflects the glow of Eros’ eyes. “Begone, you pitiful asshole.”
Eros snarls and throws Nico’s sword away, but the demigod only smiles. This is exactly the reaction he wanted.
“You cannot kill me, arrogant hero,” Eros reminds him.
“No, but I can scare you.” Raising an eyebrow at him, Nico says, “Many have been scared of me. I am a child of Hades. You may be a god, but you have no idea of what I am capable of.”
Eros regards Nico with a sharp glare, but the sight of it no longer grates against Nico’s conscience. He’s only bursting with energy, with confidence. He hasn’t felt so alive in years. Power hums in his core, billows over his chest, courses through his veins. He feels almost invincible.
“You have made an enemy, Nico di Angelo,” Eros promises. “And love is no enemy you want. Especially not with someone in your situation.”
Nico falters. What does Eros mean? Does he mean his being gay? Does he mean with society in general? Then Nico turns to his boyfriend, who’s shivering with fear and adrenaline at his side, and it clicks. He means Will.
Nico scowls at Eros. “You say I have made an enemy, Eros, but the truth of the matter is that you made me an enemy long ago. When you first stabbed me in the shoulder with your weapon.” Nico glances at the wound on Eros’ left arm and shakes his head. “You made a mistake long ago. You are only now realizing it.”
Silence lingers around them, floating tensely in the hot air. Then Eros says, “I can influence a lot.” A glimmer of confidence returns in his eyes. “Be warned, child of Hades.”
With that, Eros disappears. And Will and Nico are left alone once more, staring ahead to whatever terrors lie ahead.

okay it is my firm belief that the marauders had a game called ‘dungbomb detonator’ where they would set a randomised timer on a dung bomb and throughout the day would try to covertly drop the dungbomb into each other’s pocket and whoever had possession of the dungbomb when it exploded would be smelly for the rest of the day and have to get the rest of the marauders chocolate from honeydukes

Writing prompt. Can I go for a non romantic pairing? Ronnie and Patrick - because every scene with these two is pure gold and there should be more. Dealers choice: 11 or 18
Thanks for this! This is mostly #11 “things you said when you were drunk” but there’s a little #18 “things you said when you were scared” as a treat ;)
I GET DRUNK BUT IT’S NOT ENOUGH for @n0connections [rated G, 813 words]

It’s been five days, seventeen hours, and forty-three minutes since David told Patrick that he “needed space”; since Patrick’s heart dropped straight through his stomach and onto the scuffed carpet of room eight.
Not that he’s counting, of course. He’s just… aware of the passage of time.
And time goes very, very slowly without David there with him in their store.
Five days, seventeen hours, and forty-four minutes.
He misses David so much it hurts; it’s as though a vital organ has been carved out of him, leaving a gaping wound in its wake with nothing to fill it.
He’s sent flowers, and chocolates, and wine. He’s apologised, and explained, and cried.
All he can do now is wait for David to be ready to forgive him. Which he will.
He will. Right?
Seventeen hours and forty-five minutes.
Last night he went to the Wobbly Elm and got so absolutely, blindingly drunk that he doesn’t even remember getting home. He must have called Ray, because he woke up this morning in just his undershirt and boxer briefs, tucked up in his bed with a bowl perched on his nightstand. So not only is he now trying to deal with the humiliation of being seen by anyone in that state, he’s also suffering through the worst hangover he’s had in over a decade.
Forty-six minutes.
He’s keenly aware that this vague, rolling nausea is probably exactly how David felt when his sister dropped the word fiancée onto the motel picnic table and accidentally detonated a bomb full of secrets and omissions.
So, he probably deserves it.
Halfway through minute forty-seven, the bell above the door chimes, tearing Patrick’s attention away from the clock and towards the imposing figure standing with crossed arms in the doorway.
Patrick swallows hard, straightening his shoulders and trying very hard not to look like someone who just wants to crawl back into bed. “Ronnie.”
“You look like death warmed over, Brewer.”
So, he wasn’t successful, then.
“I’m feeling a bit under the weather today.” God, is that an understatement.
Ronnie snorts, her arms dropping to her sides. “Oh, I bet you are.”
The little blood that was remaining in Patrick’s face drains out of it as the meaning of her words sink in. “Um. Did you—”
“See the state you were in last night? Mm-hmm.” She steps further into the store, picking up a jar of moisturiser off the table and not-quite-slamming it down on the counter in front of him, making him wince at the noise. “You were chatty. And weepy. I don’t like chatty or weepy.”
“Ronnie, I am so—”
“Save it.” She fixes him with a steely gaze. “I’m not the one you need to be apologising to.”
Tears prick at the corner of Patrick’s eyes and he blinks quickly, determined not to let them fall. “I know. I’m trying.”
“Mm.” She doesn’t sound like she quite believes him, and she pushes the moisturiser closer to him. Taking the hint, Patrick starts to ring it up, and Ronnie waits until he’s looking at the till to add: “Have you told him that you love him?”
Patrick drops the jar. “What?”
“You told me enough times last night. I love him so much, Ronnie, he’s the best thing that’s ever happened to me, I don’t know what I’ll do if I lose him — I didn’t need to hear any of that. Have you tried telling him?”
“I don’t—” Buying himself some time he picks up the jar, inspecting it carefully for any cracks. Deeming it acceptable, he places it carefully in one of the totes and slides the card reader across the counter. “I don’t want him to hear it for the first time as an apology. I want him to know I mean it.”
“Hmm.” For the first time since she walked into the store, Ronnie looks faintly approving. “Well, for what it’s worth, I’m rooting for you.”
Patrick raises his eyebrows. Whatever he was expecting to hear, it wasn’t that. “Thank you, Ronnie.”
“Don’t get me wrong.” She wags a finger in his face, and Patrick has to fight every instinct in his body to stop himself shrinking back. “I want David to be happy. And for some inexplicable reason, you make him happy. That’s why.”
Patrick musters up something that he thinks might actually resemble a smile. “Noted.”
“Mm-hmm.” She picks up the bag, walking towards the door before stopping with her hand on the doorknob and turning back. “Sort it out fast, Brewer. Driving you home drunk and crying once was enough for a lifetime.”
Patrick’s already pulling out his laptop to buy the bracelet he kept looking at a couple of days ago, thinking how much David would like it, so it takes a moment for her words to sink in. “Wait— you— what?”
But the door is already closing behind her.
