my mother has had the same dream for all her life: do something to be remembered by.

she's lived quite a life, but now, nearing 50, she wishes to take control of what she does, and, has therefore chosen to follow her dream of drawing.

she wishes to make this into a career she can continue to her death, but no one is seeing her videos or buying her art.

This is from an as yet unnamed fic for the @conangray-marauders-fest based on Lonely Dancers by Conan Gray

Sirius from six months ago would be strongly tempted to march across the club and cause a scene. Sirius from six months ago might have gotten into a screaming match right in the middle of the function, or stormed out with Fabian's house and car keys so that he couldn't get back home, or even thrown a punch. Right-now-Sirius has been doing yoga. He’s been meditating and working on his anger management and promising James that he wouldn’t need to pick him up from a police station again. Sitting here now, downing the remainder of a rosé spritzer, watching Fabian dry humping a stranger into a wall covered in fake plants surrounded by the bisexual glow of a cursive neon sign reading "The Naughty Corner", Sirius felt a strange sense of zen. Yes, perhaps his heart was currently residing somewhere in the vicinity of his bowels, and his vision was a little bit fuzzy due to a combination of intense rage and tears (which, if you pointed out, would make him even angrier) but, honestly, he was totally fine! He even told James a few months ago, maybe he went after the wrong twin. Fabian always was a bit more of a fuckboy than his brother, and yeah, maybe he had a slightly better hairline and wore sexier clothes, but Sirius knew that would bite him in the ass in the end, and here it was, its sharp teeth clamped onto his perky cheek as predicted. But, no. It's totally fine. Sirius is one hundred percent, to quote Mac Miller (or, if you're feeling silly, Mick Jagger and Keith Richards), Cool, Calm, and Collected. The only feelings running through his body, watching his boyfriend grinding his hips into a twinkier, blonder version of Ryan Reynolds, are resigned acceptance, a sense of placid serenity, and the gentle desire for a stronger beverage. Across the club, Fabian hefts Mr. Reynold's gay twin brother up into the air by his thighs and pins him against the wall with his hips, and Sirius snaps the delicate stem of the empty wine glass his spritzer was served in, in half in his hands.

1. Write a little every day (or as often as possible). Cliché but true. That way you kind of always have the story in your head and your brain keeps working on it while you do other things.

2. If you are not sure about what to write/where the story is going - just start somewhere. I don't know how many times I have started with something completely different for the microfics for example. The final product end up being something that happened before that, or after, or from a different POV.

3. You don't owe anyone your writing (except if you happen to be writing for school or work). A prompt that doesn't inspire you? - skip it! Write something else!

The wedding had gone off without a hitch. Even Lily’s family seemed to be happy, which for them was nothing short of a miracle. The day had been beautiful, they’d all cried at some point and by the time they sent James and Lily off to their honeymoon suite, almost everyone was ready to call it a night.

“Fancy a walk?” Remus asked, as the last of the wedding guests stumbled upstairs. “I’m not tired yet.” Sirius nodded and they took a side door out of the hotel and followed the path down to the lake. Remus walked ahead and sat at the end of the rickety jetty, Sirius following a moment later.

“I know this is quite possibly the worst time to bring this up,” Sirius started.

“But you’re going to anyway?”

“But I’m going to anyway.” He nodded, “I just wanted to say that I’m so sorry for how things ended with us. I was an absolute monster towards the end and you tried so hard to help me and, yeah, I’m just really sorry, and thank you for trying so hard.”

Remus said nothing for a while, the two of them watched wildlife create ripples on the surface of the lake, and marvelled at the reflection of the moon.

“Lily said you’re sober now.”

“Six years and four months, yesterday.” He smiled.

“Wow, that’s fantastic. I’m so proud of you.” Remus squeezed Sirius’ thigh affectionately out of habit, then froze. “Shit, sorry.”

“It’s fine.” Sirius was glad that it was dark, he knew he was blushing. “It took about two weeks before I realised you weren’t coming back and then, bam, rock bottom.”

“I’m so—”

“Don’t be. I needed the wake up call. If you’d stayed much longer I’d have destroyed us both.” Sirius looked down at the water. “I’m sorry.”

“It was a long time ago.” Remus said slowly. “It sounds like you’re doing really well.”

“There are good and bad days, like anything. Therapy helped a lot.” Sirius shrugged, “Another thing you were right about.”

“I feel like saying ‘I told you so’ is in bad taste.” Remus chanced a look at him and smiled.

“Nah, I deserve at least one, I reckon.” Sirius smiled back at him, taking in the way the moonlight picked out the beginnings of grey near his temples, and made his eyes seem to glow. He willed himself to look away for the sake of his self control.

“Well then. I told you so.” Remus said softly, looking out at the lake.

“Turns out I’d repressed a lot of stuff from being a kid and apparently that’s not good if you want to be a healthy adult. Yes, yes. I know you told me that too.” Remus bit his lip as he grinned and even just seeing the side of it made Sirius want. “I needed to lose you to get myself better, but it’s also the worst thing that ever happened to me.”

“Yeah, that’s pretty much where I’ve been at with it.” Remus leant back on his elbows and looked up at the sky. “I was… miserable. For a long time. But I don’t think I’d be who I am now without that time in my life, you know?”

Sirius mirrored Remus’ movement and stared up at the stars. “Did you find someone?”

“To love?” Sirius nodded, “Nah. I looked for a while, had a few dates here and there, but nobody really interested me. It’s just me and my cat Peaches. What about you?”

“After I got out of self destruction mode, I didn’t date for a couple of years. I was with this guy Ed for a year or so but that fizzled, and it’s just been me for a few years now. I debated getting a cat, but it’s hard work taking care of myself, let alone another living thing.”

“It sounds stupid, but getting a cat made me look after myself more.” Remus chuckles and Sirius feels the sound in his chest. “Like I had someone else to be accountable to for the first time in ages and it made me want to do better.”

“Weirdly, I totally get what you mean.” He paused, “It’s hard to want to do things for yourself sometimes, right?”

“Exactly.” Remus nodded, “She makes sure I’m awake by 7 and making her breakfast by quarter past.”

“Still not a morning person?” Sirius knocked his shoulder into Remus’ gently.

“No,” he knocked Sirius back and laughed, “I go back to bed after feeding her way too often. She tries.” Before he could talk himself out of it, he gently rested his head on Sirius’ shoulder. “Is this ok?”

“Yeah,” Sirius’ voice was barely audible as he leant his cheek on Remus’ hair. “This is ok.”

His thoughts feel like an avalanche growing into an unstoppable buzzing mess. "You have to distract me, I can't sit fucking still like this. I’m going to scream." Remus is quiet for a moment, then whispers, "Distract you how?" "I don't know, anything. Tell me something. I feel like my brain is going to bust out of my skull." Remus is quiet for a few more long moments until Sirius turns his head to see if he hasn't maybe fallen asleep, but instead Remus is staring, brow furrowed in thought, at Sirius's shoulder. He looks up finally and says. "I took Tilly on a date while you were up in Liverpool." "Who's Tilly?" Sirius says automatically, even though he knows very well who Tilly is. Remus snorts softly. "Tilly from the wolfsbane trial, you know." "Hm," Sirius says. "I, uh…I borrowed your bike." "You what?!" Sirius says, then immediately slams a hand over his mouth, because he said that far too loudly. The two of them are silent for a long moment, but when no one shows up to murder them, he drops his hand again and spins on Remus. "You what?!" He says again, much more quietly although no less intensely. Remus is grinning at him. Sirius senses shame. Good, he'd better be ashamed. "You haven't even ridden with me yet!"
