i have worked at my job for roughly seven years now and ive gotten familiar with many of the people that come in frequently—not to the point of making anything but causal conversation, but familiar in a way that i now understand to be imperative to humanity as a whole. i know these people in a way many in their life may not ever see. i know their favorite order. i meet their friends, their wives, their husbands. i know the days they come. they tell me why they’re not coming again for a long time (weddings, jobs, new homes and surgeries).
for four months i served a man the same order, over and over, each saturday morning. he gave me a dollar tip and a kind smile. many days he was the first order. after he didn’t show for a few weeks, i asked if anyone had seen him and they told me he passed away. i think about him often. the other week a woman who comes in frequently with her husband, and orders chili and chicken, always with extra crackers, came in without him. she told me he’d just had a heart attack and didn’t know if he was going to be okay. he wore a bucket hat and never could hear me well, but was kind in a grandfatherly way. he tipped me in quarters and quips. he died, and i think abt her, and about him. i bought her meal and i hope she’s okay almost every day.
i serve two brothers now, who order kids meals and find someone they know every day they come in. people remember them in a way that only people in small towns can do: in the form of bonds, connections, figuring out who they belonged to and who they friended; a man with a beautiful sister, the husband of a babysitter. they remind me of the country bears, and one smiles apologetically at me when the other gets accidentally abrasive about trivial matters. i like them, despite the fact that they are the brand of man i typically do not like at all.
i’m partial to a group of vietnam veterans who order coffee and biscuits and gravy. i know their first names even though they don’t know mine. one likes tabasco, one won’t drink coffee, one takes his water with no straw and comes in before them all and hands me twenty dollars so the rest can’t pay first. i went to school with his grandchild, but now know him far better. he was sick with cancer because of what they made him do over in vietnam, when he was my age, but better now. but also worse. worse all the time. he sometimes doesn’t come in at all when before he always would. he looks like sam elliot and is my favorite
i hate the idea that becoming a regular at some place is at all embarrassing or cause for shame. i like that i will remember these individuals, that i will wonder back on them and always know pieces about them. it is good to take up space in this world. the world wants you too; it’s pleading you for it. you’re meant to be remembered, meant to be heard, meant to be cared about even by the person who gives you refills of coffee

The Pizza Knight Saves The Princess is a fantasy-comedy choose-your-own-adventure-style visual novel being developed by Dragon's Den Studios. Set on the planet Comestibla, where everything & everyone is made of food, we play as the Pizza Knight as he tries to save his beloved Water Ice Princess from the castle of the evil Chocolate Count. You can download the demo for free HERE: https://dragons-den-studios.itch.io/the-pizza-knight-saves-the-princess
Over the course of this month I'll be posting some of the game's art to this blog! This image is a sneak peak of content only available in the full release!
This image depicts a flashback that the Pizza Knight has to his youth after drinking one of the potions. This memory, taking place ten years before canon, depicts a scene from the knight's years as apprentice knight to the Skim Milk Knight when they visited the inn of Flying Jacob, a veteran of the AU wars made from, well, Flying Jacob (a Swedish casserole made from chicken, cream, chili sauce, bananas, roasted peanuts, and bacon). While the Skim Milk Knight talks of bygone days with his host, the Pizza Knight encounters one of Flying Jacob's tamed Pteranodonuts, who is begging for a sample of the knight's lingonberries. The sodas in the foreground are based on a discontinued line of sodas from Sweden called Kristall that I loved as a kid, particularly their pear flavor.

12:36 PM
I finally got my ass out of bed. Today, Hurricane Beryl decided to make its way here. We have no electricity, so I have no idea when this will be posted.
At least I charged my laptop so I can at least write what’s been going on. The back door suddenly opened from the wind. I ran over there to close and lock it. Figured my dad could just knock the shit out of the door when he needed to go in, but mom said to leave it unlocked and just make sure it was closed well. So, I did that. Then I told my cat he was a good boy for not running outside when the door was wide open. See, he’s a retired veteran from the outdoors. Usually, he would sprint the moment he sees his chance to relive his younger years but not this time. I take it the wind was too intimidating for him. I still called him a good boy for not running out.
My family got lucky. All we’re getting is high winds and no electricity. Some areas north and west of ours got flooding and worse damage. Don’t even want to think of the areas south of us. My far neighbor’s tree got split in half with some of the branches on top of the car. Three small parts of the fence in our backyard got toppled down. Those won’t be repaired until my parents come back from their trip. I can hear the rumble of a generator from a neighbor in another street. I wonder how they got their generator set up. It always powers on immediately when there’s no power and off when there is. I’ll ask my dad one day.
Currently, my mom is making homemade chili. We have a gas stove, so we can still cook food. We also have plenty of water. My family uses this water service this for our water dispenser thingy upstairs. They send several three-gallon things of water. I have some right now. My dad is working on our generator, wondering when my brother will get up. My mom is back to crocheting a shirt and my sis is reading this book on seeds. My cat is just laying on the floor all cute and stuff.
I’m not gonna lie, it is a tad humid in here. Thankfully, the sun is covered by the clouds, so we aren’t dying of the heat, but we do have light to see. I do have a handheld fan that I’ll grab in a second. That and more water since I’m thirsty as fuck.
Off in the distance I hear someone using a chainsaw. Probably to cut down the tree branches they can cut off. That’s wild, to be honest. The wind is strong enough to push me aside like tumbleweed. I have to use force to push the door shut. It’s not as bad as Harvey or Ike (I do recall with Ike that the wind being so strong I could see the wind punching the door partially open). But I know there’s still others less fortunate out there than I.
Anyways, to better things.
Yesterday, I downloaded FFXIV Online. I downloaded the free trial. Definitely did not expect it to take over six hours to download, but it did. I spent all that time waiting watching YouTube videos from AstralSpiff and Chickeninja42. The moment everything was done downloading, I hopped on the game. I only got as far as character creation. Which is not far, to be honest. But I did finish the character! I customized her the same way as I do in every video game that I own that has character customization - white hair, red eyes, fair skin, and some muscle. Her hair had to pulled back. Funny enough, choosing the voice I wanted for her took longer than anything else. It was great having my sister helping me out though. Not that she plays the game, but I like having her input. If I have time and electricity, I’ll put a picture of her below this paragraph.
[I am absolutely not in my computer to screenshot. RIP.]
I hope we get electricity back soon, but my gut tells me it’ll be a good while before it comes back. Maybe tomorrow morning. Will I even work tomorrow?
Eyyy, my brother finally made it downstairs. I’ll take it as my cue to go write or do something else. Cause, to be honest, I can only type as long as this laptop battery will last me.
5:41 PM
Electricity isn’t back yet. I’ve spent the last several hours napping my life away after I ate. For some reason the tiredness washed over me. Could keep my eyes open. So far, my phone is on 80% because I haven’t been using it. I need to remember to call my boyfriend later because I want to hear his voice. We won’t be able to FaceTime today which sucks but that’s okay. I need him to know that I’m alright. I mean, he knows I’m okay, but I want him to hear it out of my mouth.
The sky is blue. Like nothing ever happened. My mom stuck her tongue out at it.
I did finally wash my hair. I didn’t put conditioner, just leave-in. My lower back pain flared up which made me cut my wash time in half. Let’s see how long my hair lasts. For now, I’ll just sit here and talk to my mom and sister.
7:10 PM
My dad and brother got the generator working. It’s working upstairs for sure. Got my phone charging. I think they’re trying to get the refrigerator and freezer to turn on. I’m just saying, we can do without the TV. And we could just keep the power downstairs instead of both. I can sleep on the floor that’s chill.
For now, my mom is going to find something for us to eat. I am going to try to cool down some more. All I want is to cool down. At least the A/C is on so the upstairs can cool down. There’s nothing much else to say.
I did talk to my boyfriend on the phone for a little bit, but the call dropped. It was nice hearing his voice. He’s more freaked out than me, but in his defense, I’m used to this.
Just talked to bro. He said the freezer and fridge are working. He’s going to turn off the A/C because we don’t have enough gas. That’s cool, to be honest. We can survive the heat for a little while. It could always be worse. I have my handheld fan, it’ll be okay.
8:11 PM
WE GOT POWER BACK, BABY! Wifi isn’t working but honestly, I don’t care.
I’d like to thank the hard workers who oversee the electricity shit because I know they’ve been working nonstop. I also like to thank my boyfriend for being patient with me. Honestly, just give it up to the electricians who were working honestly all-day getting shit done.
Now, I have to be real, I’m probably one of the lucky ones. While the storm was only during the day, there’s probably still well over a million people without power. I hope they get theirs soon. For now, I’m going to finally relax, maybe take a cup of decaf coffee, and continue playing minesweeper for the rest of the night. Hey, I might even get on YouTube. I’ll see what I’ll do.
Until next time,
Vivid Entropy

Bessie Coleman
By
Jone Johnson Lewis
Updated on January 31, 2018
Bessie Coleman, a stunt pilot, was a pioneer in aviation. She was the first African American woman with a pilot's license, the first African American woman to fly a plane, and the first American with an international pilot's license. She lived from January 26, 1892 (some sources give 1893) to April 30, 1926
Early Life
Bessie Coleman was born in Atlanta, Texas, in 1892, tenth of thirteen children. The family soon moved to a farm near Dallas. The family worked the land as sharecroppers, and Bessie Coleman worked in the cotton fields.
Her father, George Coleman, moved to Indian Territory, Oklahoma, in 1901, where he had rights, based on having three Indian grandparents. His African American wife, Susan, with five of their children still at home, refused to go with him. She supported the children by picking cotton and taking in laundry and ironing.
Susan, Bessie Coleman's mother, encouraged her daughter's education, though she was herself illiterate, and though Bessie had to miss school often to help in the cotton fields or to watch her younger siblings. After Bessie graduated from eighth grade with high marks, she was able to pay, with her own savings and some from her mother, for a semester's tuition at an industrial college in Oklahoma, Oklahoma Colored Agricultural and Normal University.
When she dropped out of school after a semester, she returned home, working as a laundress. In 1915 or 1916 she moved to Chicago to stay with her two brothers who had already moved there. She went to beauty school, and became a manicurist, where she met many of the "Black elite" of Chicago.
Learning to Fly
Bessie Coleman had read about the new field of aviation, and her interest was heightened when her brothers regaled her with tales of French women flying planes in World War I. She tried to enroll in aviation school, but was turned down. It was the same story with other schools where she applied.
One of her contacts through her job as a manicurist was Robert S. Abbott, publisher of the Chicago Defender. He encouraged her to go to France to study flying there. She got a new position managing a chili restaurant to save money while studying French at the Berlitz school. She followed Abbott's advice, and, with funds from several sponsors including Abbott, left for France in 1920.
In France, Bessie Coleman was accepted in a flying school, and received her pilot's license—the first African American woman to do so. After two more months of study with a French pilot, she returned to New York in September, 1921. There, she was celebrated in the Black press and was ignored by the mainstream press.
Wanting to make her living as a pilot, Bessie Coleman returned to Europe for advanced training in acrobatic flying—stunt flying. She found that training in France, in the Netherlands, and in Germany. She returned to the United States in 1922.
Bessie Coleman, Barnstorming Pilot
That Labor Day weekend, Bessie Coleman flew in an air show on Long Island in New York, with Abbott and the Chicago Defender as sponsors. The event was held in honor of Black veterans of World War I. She was billed as "the world's greatest woman flyer."
Weeks later, she flew in a second show, this one in Chicago, where crowds lauded her stunt flying. From there she became a popular pilot at air shows around the United States.
She announced her intent to start a flying school for African Americans, and began recruiting students for that future venture. She started a beauty shop in Florida to help raise funds. She also regularly lectured at schools and churches.
Bessie Coleman landed a movie role in a film called Shadow and Sunshine, thinking it would help her promote her career. She walked away when she realized that the depiction of her as a Black woman would be as a stereotypical "Uncle Tom." Those of her backers who were in the entertainment industry in turn walked away from supporting her career.
In 1923, Bessie Coleman bought her own plane, a World War I surplus Army training plane. She crashed in the plane days later, on February 4, when the plane nose-dived. After a long recuperation from broken bones, and a longer struggle to find new backers, she finally was able to get some new bookings for her stunt flying.
On Juneteenth (June 19) in 1924 , she flew in a Texas air show. She bought another plane—this one also an older model, a Curtiss JN-4, one that was low-priced enough that she could afford it.
May Day in Jacksonville
In April, 1926, Bessie Coleman was in Jacksonville, Florida, to prepare for a May Day Celebration sponsored by the local Negro Welfare League. On April 30, she and her mechanic went for a test flight, with the mechanic piloting the plane and Bessie in the other seat, with her seat belt unbuckled so that she could lean out and get a better view of the ground as she planned the next day's stunts.
A loose wrench got wedged in the open gear box, and the controls jammed. Bessie Coleman was thrown from the plane at 1,000 feet, and she died in the fall to the ground. The mechanic could not regain control, and the plane crashed and burned, killing the mechanic.
After a well-attended memorial service in Jacksonville on May 2, Bessie Coleman was buried in Chicago. Another memorial service there drew crowds as well.
Every April 30, African American aviators—men and women—fly in formation over Lincoln Cemetery in southwest Chicago (Blue Island) and drop flowers on Bessie Coleman's grave.
Legacy of Bessie Coleman
Black flyers founded the Bessie Coleman Aero Clubs, right after her death. the Bessie Aviators organization was founded by Black women pilots in 1975, open to women pilots of all races.
In 1990, Chicago renamed a road near O'Hare International Airport for Bessie Coleman. That same year, Lambert - St. Louis International Airport unveiled a mural honoring "Black Americans in Flight," including Bessie Coleman. In 1995, the U.S. Postal Service honored Bessie Coleman with a commemorative stamp.
In October, 2002, Bessie Coleman was inducted into the National Women's Hall of Fame in New York.

I went to my first riichi mahjong tournament over the weekend and I did wildly better than I thought I would! Lot of firsts for me, just in general. I'm writing up as best a summary as I can while it's still fresh.
The tournament was in Cincinnati, Ohio (technically on a college campus in Northern Kentucky, but it's right on the border there). Just a few hours drive away. I met up with a friend on the north side of the city for sushi dinner and a quick trip to the hobby store on Friday afternoon before making my way to the AirBNB where I was staying with a dozen other mahjong players. I built a robot, played a single quick game of mahjong, and went to bed probably too late.
(There were bunk beds! I've always wanted to sleep on a bunk bed! Now that I have, I don't know if I'd recommend it, or at least the one I was on, if either party on the top or bottom bunk moves at all, the whole thing would shift.)
On Saturday, the tournament began early. Sixty! people were all there to play riichi mahjong, some locals, some all the way from the coast. I knew the five people who came from my club and no one else, so there was a lot of meeting new people. There were beginners who were so new they still didn't have most of the table etiquette down, and grizzled veterans with decades of play under their belts. There were to be six hanchan of matches, and the top eight who had accumulated the most points during that time would advance to the finals.
Hanchan 1: I uh, didn't do too great in this one. A guy who was very clearly new had a remarkable winning streak and left the rest of us in the dust. I don't feel bad about it though, partly because I'm sure it was a great experience for the guy, but also because the dude who ended up winning the whole tourney only got second in that game.
Hanchan 2: Going into this one, I was pretty intimidated. I had just gotten fourth and now I was going up against three very clearly experienced players. Towards the back half of the game, I had a riichi pinfu hand with a well-laid suji trap that ended up being a haneman ippatsu, which was enough to eke out first place.
(Break for lunch! Another first, we went to Skyline Chili, which I've never been to despite being a life-long Ohioian. I had the salad, which is probably heretical, but I think it was the right choice, because others who had the chili were drowsy the rest of the afternoon.)
Hanchan 3: Another game with experienced players where I did much, much better than I could have hoped. I dealt into a dealer mangan at the end and still won with 45000 points. I think that was my biggest misplay, I was trying too hard to end the game quickly despite the dealer having a whole bunch of value visible on the table.
Hanchan 4: The player across from me had an incredible streak going for a while, and I was in third for most of the game. We were down to the last hand, first being almost certainly out of reach, second looking possible with a mangan ron win. I was the south seat and started with a closed triplet of south winds, and very carefully built a hon itsu around it. Even when the first place player went into riichi, I managed to advance my hand to tenpai with a 2-man/3-man double pon wait while avoiding discarding in. On his last draw, that same guy discarded the 2-man, and I snagged a comfortable second, avoiding losing my hard-earned points from the previous round.
(End of day one! At this point, I was ninth! in the overall rankings. There was some free play, where I intentionally played as poorly as possible, just to get it out of my system. I would take one look at my starting hand, think "this looks like it could advance to (x)" and then try to achieve that yaku, discarding any and every other possibility. Despite that, I hit tenpai for sanshoku douko at one point, and got within 1-shanten of kokushi at another. We also went to Waffle House for dinner, always a good time. Went to bed probably too late again.)
Hanchan 5: Another game with tremendously strong players, where I was in second nearly the whole game just because I played defensively and didn't deal in, even if I didn't win anything big either. There was an upset mangan at the last moment where the player in third managed to hit the guy in first who had been controlling the whole game, putting me in third at 29400. Even with the uma bonus, I was only down 5.6, putting me down to 14th. I needed a decent second, preferably a strong first, if I had any chance of making top eight.
Hanchan 6: The game I remember most strongly. I started in the south seat, and East 1 had two repeats. Three times I was putting together a solid hand, someone else declared riichi, and I would somehow deal in each time, twice with an ippatsu. I started East 2, my dealership, already down to 12k points from 30k. Forgot top eight, at that point, I felt like I'd be lucky to not erase all my progress from the last five hanchan.
East 2 started, and I started with a fairly weak looking hand, but it seemed like I could get a win off it and have a repeat. I hit tenpai with a single wait on the 7-man, and decided not to riichi, hoping to improve my 8-9 man block into something more likely to be dealt into. Then, of course, I immediately drew the 7-man. A tsumo nomi hand for 500 points from everyone didn't do much for my score, but it did let me keep the dealer seat.
East 2-1 I started off with an odd looking hand that I immediately decided to turn into the chiitoitsu it so obviously wanted to be. I hit tenpai around turn 6, deciding to wait on the 9-pin that looked like it would come out of an opponent's hand without any trouble. And then it did, almost immediately! Another repeat.
I ended up getting up to 5-honba, with two dealer mangans in East 2. One was a super fast meitanpin tsumo dora. The other was a fairly simple riichi haku hand with a 1-4 sou wait. The player to my right dealt in pretty quickly, and I hit the chun off the ura-dora, tripling my hand's value. At the fifth repeat, another player hit riichi, and I finally relented and played it safe. He eventually tsumo'd and we finally got to East 3, where I won with another big hand.
The last hand was South 1, I had so many repeats that we hit the time limit in the middle of East 4. Once again, I hoped for a fast hand to keep my top spot and as many points as possible. It looked like a simple tanyao at first, but I just kept drawing into triplets. I ended up with a pair wait on the 3-pin, with a 4-5-6 sou and three closed triplets, while avoiding dealing into other players. I managed to draw the 3-pin myself and got one last mangan, taking my final score to 59000. The final rankings were posted and I had rocketed all the way up to second overall! My very first tournament and I managed to get to the semi-finals.
(Lunch break! We went to Big Boy)
Semi-finals were two hanchan, with eight players across two tables. No swapping between matches, played the same people twice and saw what the scores looked like across two games. Whatever mojo I had in hanchan 6 had evaporated. In game 1 I managed to snag first with a miraculous riichi ippatsu tsumo chin itsu, but the rest of the game was defensive play against other players with much faster hands. Game 2 I had maybe two very small wins, dealt in a few times, and ended in fourth. I did not make the cut to finals.
The loser's bracket for 5th through 8th place was pretty relaxed, partly because we had already lost, but mostly because 3/4 of us were from the same club. ("If I wanted to play you two, I would have just stayed home!", I said.) I didn't accomplish much here either, I got third for not dealing in. The other two from my club got first and second, and the one other guy got fourth. I placed seventh and got a cool little plaque, I'll get a good picture of it to post on here later.
I had a lot of fun and got in a lot of good experience! I don't know if I'd travel more than a state or two away for another tournament, but I definitely want to do this again. Not too soon though, I think I got overexposed over the weekend, the whole drive home I didn't even want to think about tiles.

For both vampire boyos:
🍕(when they were alive) 🍎 and 🎯
🍕 - What is their favorite food? (when they were alive)
Emmy: Raised a vegetarian, Emmy has always been a big eater of salads, fruits, veggies, dairy and and grains/seeds. His favorite go-to fast food was always a Taco Bell cheesy bean and rice burrito with copious amounts of hot sauce.
His absolute favorite dish would have to be a sweet chili lime grilled mango salad. It has all of his favorite flavors in a single dish: Grilled mangos with plenty of cucumbers, cherry tomatoes, red onions and mint leaves drizzled in sweet chili lime sauce.
Javier: On the opposite end of the spectrum, you have a man from Tennessee who loves the home cookin' of his mother. Javier would kill to be able to eat his mother's chicken and dumplings with a side of Mexican cornbread again. But alas, human food tastes like licking an ashtray to him now and the Beast makes him immediately empty his stomach if he dares to try and swallow it.
🍎 - What is the OC’s relationship w/their parents like?
Emmy: Oh buddy, where to even start...
Emmy was born out of wedlock and raised the first eight years of his life the child of his single father, Orion Acero. Emmy was constantly vying for his father’s attention, but Orion’s job at the local university and endless events to attend as a vehicle to get his name established in Phoenix always left Emmy wanting.
Orion eventually started dating again and got married when Emmy was nine. Emmy, in a fit of jealousy, tried his damndest to ruin the occasion by swallowing the wedding bands and waited until after a two-hour search to own up to his deed. his new stepparent was furious and swore to the boy that they will not tolerate bad behavior from him. Em’s new stepparent and permanent resident of the household became a more prominent and far stricter figure of authority than Orion to Emmy and the two grew to resent each other.
At fifteen, Emmy became a reluctant older brother to what he could only assume was his replacement. His dad and stepparent stop having time for him, too preoccupied with the new baby girl and Emmy is largely left to his own devices.
As an adult, Emmy largely avoids having much to do with his family. Forced to attend the same university his father is now the chancellor of, Emmy barely attended class and spent most of time enjoying the partyboy nightlife. After meeting and eventually dating Javier, Orion tried to separate the two and threatened to have the police called on Javier if he was ever found on the property again. It's no surprise that just one night after the threat, Emmy ran away with Javier, hit the road, and never turned back.
Orion has regretted his actions that finally pushed Emmy away for good and continues to hope one day his son will come back if he gives Emmy enough space and keeps paying his credit cards. It's been almost seven months since Emmy disappeared with Javier and the only sign Orion has that his son is still (apparently) doing well is the string of credit card charges that follow Emmy's travels all over the country.
Emmy doesn't know his other father, Lucian Torres; he's only ever been told that the man was a 'deadbeat musician' and Emmy should take caution not to end up just like him. In reality, the man doesn't even know he has a son, lives comfortably on royalties for a theme song he composed decades ago, and teaches guitar lessons in Los Angeles, California.
Javier: Javier was born the only child of Celestina and Sebastián Peña. In life, Javier was very much a mama's boy at heart. Despite his gruff attitude and punk demeanor, he was always a Good Catholic Boy to his ma.
His father... was a bit of a different story. He was a military man and a war veteran, and the ghosts of the warfront never really gave him any peace. He was very keen on making sure Javier looked and dressed like a Proper Young Man, which was to say he made Javier look exactly like a smaller version of himself.
(tw suicide, ptsd) When Javier was a teenager, his father grew more and more distant as the events of his time overseas plagued him day and night, and eventually Sebastián committed suicide. It was Halloween night and Javier had been out very late with his best friend, therefore Javier was the one to discover his father in the early hours of the morning.
Javier resented his father's passing, as well as the entire Halloween season. To this day he still refuses to celebrate it. With no one left but each other, Javier and his mother grew even closer. It kills him that he can no longer have contact with her. Javier's sire, Riley, faked Javier's death after she turned him, so his dear old ma thinks she's now buried her husband and her son...
🎯 -What do they do best?
Emmy: [I answered this one over here!]
Javier: Honestly, his character sheet sums up his talents quite nicely:
Knowing how to sew might come as a surprise to most folks, but as someone who went headlong into the punk movement in the late 70s, Javier took the sewing knowledge his ma passed down to him to DIY his own battle jacket. Also it is astonishing how often you need to mend clothing as an undead creature of the night.
As for the grand theft auto... Well, after getting dumped on his ass with no money and no hope, Javier had to find some way to scrape enough together to find shelter from the sun every day. And it just so happened to be he was very good at jimmying locks and hotwiring.
He is also quite the dancer, especially when it comes to more classic dances, and commands quite the presence on the dancefloor, often entrancing others with his display. Just ask Emmy.

Veterans Day Special: Stolen Valor, Applebee's, and Dependapotamus - HWSR Ep 107
In this lively Veterans Day episode of the 'He's Wrong She's Right' podcast, hosts Andrew Lemacks and Nona Phelps delve into various military-related topics with humor and insight. They discuss the importance of veterans making their veteran status known, the humorous mandate of visiting Applebee's for a free Veterans Day meal, and the widespread phenomenon of stolen valor. They also give a special shoutout to a veteran-owned business, Reeves Bees, sampling their delicious honey products live on the show. Along the way, they talk about the differences between Veterans Day and Memorial Day, confront common misconceptions about military service, and share entertaining anecdotes from their personal experiences. 10 Tips for Hosting a Winning Football Watch Party
The 2023 NFL football season is upon us and aside from attending a game in person, there’s nothing better than cheering on your favorite team with friends at a football watch party. Here are 10 tips to host your own party, whether you’re a rookie host or a veteran party planner looking to up your game!
Choose your players.
Once you’ve decided on the date and time of your party, make your guest list and send out invitations. Keep in mind that if your list includes couples and/or families, you’ll need to provide activities and space for those who may not be as focused on the game. (See item #7.)
Send out invitations.
A two-week lead time for sending out invitations is ideal – and make sure to include a deadline for RSVP. Evite.com has some great NFL invitation templates and makes the whole process easy for hosts and their guests.
Plan your decor.
Gather team-themed items you already have as a starting point and then fill in as you envision your vibe. Here are some ideas.
Create an Insta-worthy backdrop for guests with a balloon arch in team colors and football-themed balloons from your favorite party store.
Build a concession stand for your food, complete with letter board signage.
Roll out the green carpet. Use cheap astro turf anywhere – a strip to your front door, as a tablecloth or runner, cut into small pieces for coasters.
Have a pickup truck? In true tailgating style, use the back of your truck as a beverage center.
Decorate with team pennants, pompoms, goalposts, confetti, etc. Need more creative ideas? Pinterest is your best brainstorming friend!
Check your video and audio.
Make sure your big screen will be a crowd pleaser. Test your video and audio equipment, and confirm that the big game will be accessible on your device. You don’t want to fumble first thing on game day! All guests should have seating in the viewing area, so you may need to relocate your television to a bigger space. Consider having multiple viewing areas – the main screen and others in traffic areas so no one misses a moment of the action.
Create your menu.
Finger foods are fun and easy: pigs in a blanket, sliders, chips and dips, wings, veggie trays, pizza, grilled hamburgers and hotdogs. Put together a DIY chili and toppings bar with cheeses, sour cream, guacamole, avocado, tomatoes, olives, tortilla crumbles, cilantro, etc.
Dress the part.
Don’t forget to wear your team jersey and maybe add a dab of under-eye black. As a fun alternative, dress the part of your team’s cheerleaders, or be a ref with a whistle if you’ll have opposing fans in attendance!
Add game to your game.
Although the game itself is the main feature and will keep most guests entertained, pre-game activities could include football trivia, cornhole, or simply throwing a football in the yard. And remember, kids and even some adults will probably want alternative fun! A special room for kids with crafts, games, and their own visual entertainment (movies or video games) will go a long way to ward off whining. Kid-appropriate movie ideas: “The Game Plan” featuring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and “Little Giants” starring Rick Moranis and Ed O’Neill.
