25 Days of Jegumas | Day 1 | Day 10 December 11 - Colored Lights | @noblehouseofgay | wc: 701
“Remember to stay with one of us at all times, Haz.” James reminds their kid as they unbuckle him from his carseat and pull him out of it, “This place is big and it's easy to get lost.”
Harry nods determinedly and Regulus kneels down to help the boy put his thick coat on, “And what do you do when you get lost?”
The boy thinks for a moment before, “I stay at the place that I lost you and if anyone finds me, I tell them that I’m okay or that I’m waiting for you. If they want to stay with me, I give them one of your numbers.” James and Regulus both nod as Regulus finishes zipping up his coat and moves to put his hat and scarf on him.
“Good job,” James smiles as their husband stands up, “But you won’t let go of our hands unless we’re stopped and you’ll get our attention if you want to let go for any reason, right?” Harry nods and his parents take that as confirmation enough. Together, the family heads to the little cabin and James spends a couple minutes talking to the woman at the front desk -- Marlene’s mum -- before smiling at the workers and thanking them, taking up their son’s hand once again and guiding their family into the tree farm.
The family spends a while wandering around and looking for a good tree. When they find one, James leaves Regulus and Harry to stay by it and sets off to get their childhood friend to help them out. They’re not gone for long, a familiar blonde just behind them with an axe in hand. Marlene offers a quick hello to the other two before getting to work at chopping the tree down and prepping it. She’s rolling it out onto a tarp and grinning at her childhood friend soon enough, “I’ll let you know when dad is driving out with it, yeah?” James agrees and thanks her, taking up their son’s hand once again and guiding them back out of the tree farm.
Within the next couple of days, James is getting a text from Marlene, letting them know that the tree is on the way and that her dad should be there anytime soon. They have the tree set up before Regulus and Harry get back from Regulus picking up the boy, which is a pleasant surprise for Harry to come home to. Despite the boy’s excitement, they don’t get to decorating the tree until after dinner, where Regulus sets out to pull out all of the ornaments that they normally hang on the tree while James works their usual blue and white Christmas lights into the tree.
Harry is practically shaking with excitement when James finally finishes and Regulus hands him the first ornament to put on the tree. He also hands James one of their more delicate ones, one that needs to be put up higher and more securely. The night goes like that, with Harry hanging most of the plastic bauble and random ornaments that he’s made throughout his limited time in school or other unbreakable ornaments while James gingerly hangs the breakable ones.
Soon the last things that they need to add to the tree are the family ornament, a cute thing with three figures all with their names on it, the ornament that holds James and Regulus’ wedding picture, and the star. James hangs the family one, Regulus hands the wedding picture on, and James lifts Harry on their shoulders so the boy can precariously put the star on the top branch. When James is sure that it’s secured, Regulus helps them take the boy off their shoulders and the family makes hot chocolate and settles in front of the tree and the other decorations in the house with the lights off and the blinds and curtains drawn. The Christmas lights on the tree and around the top of the room provide a soft glow that allows for just enough vision for James to be able to make out the vague figures of their husband and son. It’s soft and it’s warm and it’s gentle and it’s everything that James needs.
