Could also be words 'imported' by kittypets (Kittypet mentions a plant no one has heard and slowly it gets adopted into names somehow, maybe their name is cypress and they explain its a plant to keep their name as a prefix) or carryovers from OLD OLD names (cat named Cypress is in the one original bunches of cats that made the clans, name gets passed around in their 'honor' despite no one having seen a Cypress)
Ohh... I do like that. I have planned for the Park Cats to contribute to the Clanmew language, after all... we can see where Ripplestar's SE goes and take note if there's any characters from it who deserve better; I'll combine their old names with new ones, the way River Ripple did, for Bonefall DoTC
So for example if there's a cat who gets unceremoniously killed for a dumb reason named Flower, I'll make her name Myrtle Flower when she joins River's Clan. Or something of the sort. I've imagined these guys come from further south anyway.
We'll see though, there's a couple of good fixes floating around
#I will probably approach each one individually#I had a stroke of inspiration and realized I can make HICKORYnose into CHICORYnose#They sound a lot alike#So it's barely a change#Myrtle is also a common human name so it could easily have come from a kittypet#After all Sorrelstripe is invoking the Queen's Rights; her mate could actually be a traveler she meets with secretly#Bonefall Rewrite#There's also Bog Myrtle which is... tantalizingly close to the right range#Olivenose and Myrtlebloom both of you go to the principal's office we need to have a word with you

whats wrong with hickory? i think it's fine, hickory isn't just a type of tree, you know. hickory is used to mean strength! so hickorynose is a strong tunneler.
I've never seen it used that way tbh, though hickory is one of my favorite plant names.
Thing is that hickory is completely an American hardwood tree; it doesn't grow in that part of England. It's not even an escaped ornamental or anything, or widely planted for commercial use like sitka spruce (my detested)
Strongest tree that grows in this environment is Hornbeam, which is also the strongest tree I know about. It's also called ironwood for that reason!
#Chicory sounds very similar to Hickory though which was what I was trying to preserve#I could use Hornnose or Oaknose to keep it as a strong region-friendly tree but... Chicorynose maintains what I like about the word Hickory#Plus more toms should have flower names damn it

Larches
We're talking about Larix decidua, the European Larch, because lads I've got some choices to make.
Why? Because this little slut is a NON-NATIVE CONIFER.
AND A NASTY ONE AT THAT. You know how I mentioned in my Moorland research notes that conifers from nearby plantations have a nasty habit of spreading? Larches are the worst offender of that little quirk, and can be intentionally used to afforest an area to get it ready for new trees.
That's a good thing in certain areas-- damage from mines, intensive farming, and ecological disasters can be fixed with larch. Here in America and other parts of Europe it is a useful tool in conservation (especially in its native range)
But NOT in England. The larch was introduced in the 1600s for lumber purposes and gobbles up moorland like a glutton. It is a voracious pioneer species of low-nutrient soils, much like the two birches, scotch pine, and field maple.
The BB timeline, however, begins around the late 1800s with Hollyleaf's Century. Victorians. Not the ROOT of all evil, just a metastisis of it. The destruction of SkyClan's territory is somewhere in the 1960s.
So while it's not impossible that one of the two plantations encountered in the story are larch, I would like to keep it consistent. Larch plantations aren't the big bad in the modern era-- it's Sitka spruce in 1st place (accounting for a massive percentage of forest cover in the UK) and Douglas fir in a more distant second.
It's unlikely Clan cats would encounter larch, keeping in mind the history of both regions they live in, unless I make up a reason JUST for it to be here.
So I'm thinking about blasting it away in names, in line with my other ecological replacements like changing Hickorynose to Chicorynose. That would mean a major character, Larchkit, Larchface in StarClan, would become Lurchface. A lurch being the split between two major branches of a tree.
(Which makes perfect sense since his secret father, Appledusk (crabapple-sunset in clanmew), is named after a tree that likes to branch like that. Birches tend to grow straight.)
But before I nuke all mentions of larch from orbit, ARE there any objections?

You mentioned you've banned certain names like Hickorynose. Can you elaborate on the banned names?
I wouldn't even phrase them as a "ban," it's more of a "fix"! There are 5 cats whose names are ecologically invalid, plants that aren't seen in this environment.
The Invalid 5 are these cats;
Hickorynose = no hickories in england
Olivenose = no olive trees in england except super far south
Cypresspaw = planted by the ocean by humans, cannot self propagate
Myrtlebloom = Myrtle bush grows too south, bog myrtle grows too far north
Thriftear = ocean cliff plant
I went into depth about them in another post, but basically, each one was changed to some kind of translation quirk.
Chicorynose = Rhymes, also need more toms with flower names
Olivenose = Ex-kittypet, name in Clanmew is "Oweefchoop"
Cypresspaw = name is one of the 6 Clanmew words for willow, but Pussywillowpaw is too long and Pussypaw is uh. Not great either.
Myrtlebloom = "Wayfairing Tree" doesn't make a good name, so it was translated differently.
Thriftear = Word comes from ancient Lakemew, shared by Midnight after Ivypool went on a Salt Patrol after losing Dovewing. It was a moment. "I'll endure, just as this flower does" "Ah! You mean thrift (pahaarl)!" "Yes... like pahaarl, I-thrive."
(also it's very funny to me that Midnight's directly translated language would look a lot more like English than Clanmew, since in-canon she is usually speaking in OSV so preserving her talking 'strangely' would be SVO
Clanmew: "mice warriors they-hunt"
Midnight: "warriors hunt mice")

Better Bones WindClan Family Tree: Draft 1
[ID: The WindClan family tree for Better Bones. It's a color-coded chart of over 122 cats, with all of the cats alive as of the newest arc marked in green, and the 'progenitors' of each line marked in yellow.]
You may also want to see:
The Three Strict Rules
The Canon WindClan Diagnosis (for comparison)
ThunderClan
RiverClan
SkyClan
For the past few days, I've been trying to make ends meet with this tree. WindClan's biggest problem is how very few cats it has in-canon, with the Erins practically forgetting an entire generation between Tallstar's Revenge and TPB. As a result, I had to make this thing nearly from scratch.
The result is before you; there are 122 cats on this chart at the moment! I've used Missing Kits to try and patch the "bald spot" in the timeline, but I admittedly did have to scrounge up a couple cats here. There are still no OCs on this tree, but some unnamed background characters have been given names.
(I am also watching authorial statements like a HAWK in the hopes they will drop more names I can use to pad out some of the single-kit litters, like Appledawn's single kid Adderstone there)
I also have tried to balance the size of this Clan with BB!ThunderClan's count by ASC. There's now a little over 30 cats in this Clan.
Most of these trees have renamings, removals, and a changelog-- this one's going to be a bit different. Below the cut, you will see Renamings, Reserves, and a Changelog.
RENAMINGS: Format: Old Name (Origin) -> New Name (Reason)
Stagleap (WC) -> Stagfur (conflict)
Robinwing (WC) -> Robinflight (conflict)
Gorsetail (Po3) -> Whintail (Serious conflict with a Gorsetail in the very next arc)
Hickorynose -> Chicorynose (ecological accuracy)
Tornear -> Torear (Minor change to prevent him from being born Tornkit)
"Brown Tabby Tom" (Fire and Ice) -> Sparrowspeck (unnamed)
Whitetail's first sibling (OSC) -> Blackfur (unnamed; will update to canon name when revealed)
Whitetail's second sibling (OSC) -> Grayfoot (unnamed; will update to canon name when revealed)
Eaglekit (SSMK) -> Eagleswoop (save)
Storkkit (SSMK) -> Storkfeather (save)
Quailkit (SSMK) -> Quailheart (save)
Downkit (SSMK) -> Downwind (save)
Hillkit (SSMK) -> Hillrunner (save)
Adderkit (Cats of the Clans) -> Adderstone (save)
Galekit (OSC) -> Galerunner (save)
Buzzardkit (Po3) -> Buzzardclaw (save)
Drizzlepaw (SSMK) -> Drizzlefall (save)
Rustlepaw (SSMK) -> Rustlebush* (save) = Suffix might change, I'm not satisfied with it
Cranberrypaw (SSMK) -> Cranberrysplash (save)
Milkfur (FQ) -> Milktooth (conflict)
Snapper (Ravenpaw's Path) -> Snapstorm (MASSIVELY repurposed.)
Brushpaw (OSC) -> Brushblaze (save/repurpose)
Quickpaw (CotC) -> Quickclaw (shuffle)
Thistlepaw (CotC) -> Thistleseed (shuffle)
Pricklekit (CotC) -> Pricklepelt (shuffle)
(SSMK = Su Susann's Missing Kits)
RESERVES: There weren't enough cats for me to even consider cutting any; instead, here are some extra characters from field guides and unnamed in the background who could possibly show up again.
"Tortoiseshell Queen" from Fire and Ice; may just be Quailheart or Storkfeather, if not, her name will be Ruffclaw
"Gray Tom" from Fire and Ice; if named, he will be called Chipstone.
Swiftstar, Dalestar, Thrushbreeze, and Larkstripe's unnamed honor sire are all characters in Ripplestar's Rot, but they're just a bit too far back to be relevant at the moment.
Hareflight (FQ) is from the same time period. If they show up again, their name will be Harefrost.
Whitetail from Tigerclaw's leader ceremony was a WindClan cat in BB; she doesn't show up to his ceremony in this story, but she could appear on the tree at some point. If she does, her name will be Whitetuft.
From Code of the Clans, I am holding onto; Pebblefur, Acorntail, Morningcloud, Cloversplash, and Gorseclaw who would be renamed to Whinclaw.
Several leaders and Clerics could appear if BB ever went further back than Ripplestar's Rot. Swiftfoot, Stonestar, Duststar, Dovestar, Featherstar, Fallowstar, Rabbitstar... plus Mudpuddle, an ancient deputy.
Wanderkit and Muddyclaw from the Adventure Game are from WindClan; but currently not needed
Brightheart's surrogate kittens, Ambermoon, Snowbush, and Dewnose. Some could show up here if needed.
NOTE: If any of these characters show up again in canon, or are confirmed by authorial statement to have a different name, I will abide by that and update accordingly (unless the name is, of course, a conflict).
CHANGELOG: I tell you why I did the things and also point out what's different
Because this Clan was so empty and full of orphan warriors, I was able to completely make it however I wanted.
I also tried to make sure that MODERN WindClan is still VERY clean. Most of canon's "orphan warriors" are totally capable of being mixed with just about anyone else who's around in WindClan.
This is so I can accommodate just about whatever the Erins throw at us... within reason of course. Never doubt the Erin's ability to ruin a family tree.
In BB, Sunstrike and Furzepelt have expanded roles and survive to at least TBC, so I decided they would get Slightfoot. They're the kind of girls who would raise a rebel like him.
Ryestalk has been moved out of the Mist/Hare family. I have more need for her as a clean cat; and a better story to tell of her being afraid of tunneling. Her mother, Leafshine, died in a collapse.
I wanted to find some sort of in-between cat for Pigeonflight and Cranberrysplash, but unfortunately, I ran out of cats. She is probably adopted; found abandoned.
Fernstripe might move around in the future; for now she is a later birth to CranberryxDrizzle. If she moves, it'll probably be to SunxFurze.
Whiskernose is older now because I reworked his purpose in the Dark Forest
Drizzlefall was initially Runningbrook's child. When she dies in TNP, Webfoot raised her alongside his own kid, Rustlebush. They are marked as siblings for that purpose.
Mudclaw and Whitewater of ShadowClan had an unimportant fling during the journey. They both agreed it was an honor siring and would be kept quiet-- but Whitewater became a supporter of his during the rebellion.
When Mudclaw was smote by StarClan, she felt that the kittens were cursed.
She contacted Torear and arranged for him to take his nespring, but the night of the meeting, a snowstorm tore through the Clans. She couldn't take the runt, else he would freeze.
So, she kept Owlclaw of ShadowClan, and Harestar and Kestrelflight went to WindClan.
Brushblaze and Snapstorm are both ex-BloodClan, they did trading with WindClan just after the BloodClan battle, when Tallstar and Firestar opened up peace talks with the defeated Scourge.
Hareheatherbreeze and the Onestar Drama
So of course, one of the bigger changes in BB is that Harestar, Heathertail, and Breezepelt are in a polycule. I did a LOT with this fix in mind.
Onestar is now a single kitten. In Clanmew, his prefix is "Ul-arra," a whole fraction.
This was an expression of grief, as his mother Larksplash died in childbirth, along with his siblings. Cloudrunner was distant, unfortunately never recovering from the ordeal.
Him and Larksplash were quite old to be having a litter, and they knew the risks, but Onestar always felt like Cloudrunner blamed him, in a way.
Eventually, he wanted to raise a child. Whitetail honor dammed for him, and offered open coparentage, but Onestar politely declined. It was known Whitetail was Heathertail's parent, but they weren't very close.
Probably through a shared grievance with Onestar and feelings of responsibility over Heather, Whitetail and Brushblaze became very close. They eventually had two kittens-- Smokekit and Galekit.
Onestar interpreted this as them both trying to tell him they knew about Smoke, slipping further into paranoia towards the end.
Heathertail LOVED the two of them right away.
Unfortunately, Brushblaze laid down his life saving Kin refugees, including Heathertail and Breezepelt, by collapsing an escape tunnel on top of himself.
Galerunner and Smokehaze were only a few months old at the time.
Hareheatherbreeze will be keeping Brindlewing, Appleshine, and Woodsong! Brindlewing was first, with Apple and Wood coming in a second litter.
Tallstar's Family
In Tallstar's Collapse, Talltail leaves WindClan for a long period of time. He wandered with Jake and his family of nomads, eventually finding foundling kittens and deciding to adopt them with him.
But, eventually, he couldn't resist the pull of homesickness, and the desire to try and fix things in WindClan. He tried to leave the family he'd made behind-- but Fly followed him.
Talltail, naively, believed that Fly would remain innocent. That the kid would be above the battle culture of the Clans. He was wrong.
Fly became a ferocious warrior, even competing with him for the deputy position. If Talltail hadn't been quick or keen enough to kill an adder that was going for Heatherstar's grand-nephew, Flytail may have become leader of WindClan.
The kit was named Adderkit for this event, later becoming Adderstone.
Flytail, his mate Eagleswoop, and one of his daughters died in the WindClan Massacre. Talltail had already lost two half-siblings in the war.
What was once a large family was reduced to Tallstar, Stoneclaw, Wrenflight and her children.
Stoneclaw put off having kits for a time, eventually having two one-kit litters with her mate, Snapstorm; Buzzardclaw and Crouchfoot.
#This one is still free to use like all my other trees btw#Though I did do a lot more BB specific fixes this time around#Since I committed to the HareHeatherBreeze polycule and such#The tree is so barren in-canon that you really need to make something out of it#If you plan to tell WindClan stories#Lest you write another OSC where nothing happens and no one cares about anything#Better bones au#WindClan Family Tree#Family Tree#I prolly missed something BUT FOR NOW#DONE#I DID IT

A final update on the WindClan tree for the night...
I'm feeling the burn, guys. This tree is barren. It's barely breaking 100 cats over what's supposed to be 30 years and almost 8 generations.
Up 'till now I've been really sparing with my COTC shuffles, but I'm really going to need to break into them. I have 7 years dedicated to a nearly bloodless war.
LORD, not to mention modern WindClan!! ThunderClan's breaking 40 cats and Wind's at barely 20! It's a pickle-- I'm using missing kits to plug up older leaks, while the newer ones are sinking the ship
More fragments...
I want Stoneclaw to have kits when she's an older girl. It happens too often that cats have kits when they're young, but I like the idea of writing them more like humans.
I imagine she's kinda been a wreck since she lost everything in the Massacre, and didn't want to bring kits into the world until she felt safe.
Stone will definitely end up being a super-elder, the oldest in WindClan at some point. Like the last survivor of the massacre who tells haunting stories about the War.
Heatherstar's sister is Dawnstripe, who was Tallstar's mentor. I feel like it was a special kind of insult to Sandgorse that she took his son, and gave him to her own family. Politics.
Leafshine, who died in a collapse, had a child-- Ryestalk. She's been moved out of the Mouse/Hare litter
Rye specifically begs Heather to not put her in the tunnels, another Politics moment as Sandgorse accuses Heather of encouraging the fear that Rye will die like her mother when it was "a FREAK accident!"
I want to avoid too many cats who have no siblings, ugh... Current draft puts Eagle/Stork/Quail as siblings, but one of them is from an older litter.
Don't like how Sorrelshine is a singlet AND Whitetail is looking like a singlet too, but I have no more names x_x Might need to shuffle again
Rushtail and Robinflight need their own unique parents, I will be forced to break the COTC glass for them
Furzepelt and Boulderfur should be siblings... But Whomst will be their parents? ...Stoneclaw, maybe?
Names for each of the conflicts and kit saves:
Robinflight
Stagfur
Adderstone
Chicorynose (ecological update)
Quailheart
Storkfeather
Eagleswoop
Cranberrysplash
Drizzlefall
Rustlerain
Downwind
Hillrunner
Whintail

I noticed you have some rules on names, was there any post you made clarifying what they are?
Oh I haven't made a straightup rule list or anything! I've only been mentioning that there are 5 characters whose names have been banned because of how I committed to a specific region of England
In-canon there are a bunch of things that imply the cats are living in both the north, the south, and the midlands all at the same time. The mountain, the wildlife, the OCEAN in the WEST... the region that was most ecologically consistent is southern Lancashire.
So I mixed Lancashire, Manchester, Chester, Merseyside, and Clwyd as ecological models. Furthermore it means there are some things that could be ecologically valid, but are weird to have words for by this lake.
So these cats are getting name changes and interesting translations in Clanmew
Myrtlebloom = "Myrtle Bush" only grows in southern England, "Bog Myrtle" only grows in the further North. The name won't change; her Clanmew name is "Wayfairing-Bloom," a type of tree.
Hickorynose = No hickories in England. Chicorynose.
Cypresspaw = Cypress trees are only planted by the ocean and would be a weird thing for the Clan cats to experience, but still region-friendly. This one is going to be a type of Willow. There are several willow trees and Clanmew will have an individual word for each.
Thriftear = Clanmew has no word for sea thrift, a hardy flower that is ecologically valid but grows by the ocean. Midnight shares an ancient lake word for this plant with Ivypool.
Olivenose = There are nO OLIVES. I'm probably going to make this the word for "Oil" since humans tend to use olive oil a lot, but in Clanmew this can be made from flax, nuts, or even lard. That, or Olive will be an ex-kittypet and have a loanword name.
I don't have a rulebook of names yet though, I just answer questions as they roll in.

Chicorynose is a fawn colored she-cat with a plumy tail and green eyes. She is the deputy of Grassclan; the future successor of Whitestar
Arguably the most beautiful molly by Grassclan’s standards Design Notes:
I was originally going to leave her a solid fawn color, but then I was like “nah” and gave her some highlights and lowlights
Chicorynose wasn’t originally meant to be so fluffy but... I couldn’t help myself! Regardless of all her fabulous floof though, I assure she and her birth littermates are 100% Grassclan blood

1 and 3 for Chicorynose? For the rank asks
1. Do they think they were suitable for this position?
Chicorynose always enjoyed the idea of becoming a high ranking member of her clan. As a kit, she'd often play as a deputy or leader when her denmates would play pretend. Plus, she has many qualities which make her great for this kind of job. So yes, Chicorynose believes she was a suitable choice. Although, she knows many other cats were and are just as capable of being deputy as she is
3. Do they get nervous about the day that they’ll become leader?
It doesn't make her nervous, so much as it brings a sense of dread. She's excited by the possibility of leading, but doesn't want any harm to come to Whitestar, as they are foster sisters. But if the day should come, Chicorynose will step up without fear to lead her clan.

I got a question! How do you picture Chicorynose, and can you tell us more about her overall? Shes one of my favorite characters from your story even tho Im only a few chapters in -🐁
Chicorynose looks much like a fluffy oriental longhair! She’s seen as the most beautiful she-cat in Grassclan, due to her coat and eye color being the most desirable. She’s the best tracker in the clan, and loves all of her sisters dearly (I haven’t gotten the chance to show the five of them interacting a lot, but i do plan to change that in the future). She’s also a lesbian, but hasn’t found the right molly to settle down with yet, she’s more of a “married to the job” type than someone who’d actively seek a romantic relationship.Here’s what i imagine her looking like:

Random fun fact of the day: Chicorynose was not supposed to exist! Right before I'd started writing Moon Rise, I realized that I had forgotten to give Grassclan a deputy. So when I'd drafted up chapter 4, I made her on the spot. And since this was how she'd come into existence, Chicorynose did not have a set place within the plot until much later. She wasn't meant to receive much attention, nor was she planned to be Swiftpaw's mentor either (Ladybugbite was originally scripted for that role). I made that up on the spot too. I'm very happy with the way I've managed to fit Chicorynose in with everything. I love her as a person, and she's one of my favorite characters to write!

Quailbelly is a pretty light brown tabby she-cat with dark stripes and brown eyes. She is a Den Keeper warrior of Grassclan
the prettiest quail in the meadow Design Notes:
Quailbelly is just a few shades lighter than her big sister, Cricketsong
Her lighter fur is the same color as Chicorynose
Her eyes are positioned to be staring up at her mate, Frostfeather
I tried to give her an innocent doe-eyed look. i think that came across well
