He is trying to convince Montresor to leave—because from his perspective, Monty staying to protect him isn’t worth it. I might make an essay talking about it more, but Will has shown time and time again that he believes that he does not matter. For example, when he was first attacked by the dogs and he believed that Monty left him, he didn’t blame Monty: he apologized. Because how dare he ask Montresor to put himself in danger to save Will, Will doesn’t matter but Montresor does.

Will is willing to die alone—something he has made very clear he is terrified of—in order to protect Monty from what he views as putting himself in danger to stay with him. He is so incredibly devoted, for better and worse, and it informs every choice he makes.

So yeah… I think he’s lying here, pretending (though it doesn’t really work) that he’s doing better than he is. He will sacrifice himself (his safety, his comfort, and possibly) his life for Montresor, and he will do it happily because for him that is more than a fair trade.
