I'm seeing a lot of "ugh, so we can't even criticize fic authors anymore?" posts popping up on here and the ao3 subreddit and I just want to say, for the record: No one's saying you can't criticize (fanfic) authors publicly. They're saying it's rude and antithetical to positive fandom experience. And, yes there's a difference.
If this website was a conference and I had just spent a whole afternoon listening to a presentation on [unpopular fic trope] and after that was done, I got up on stage and very publicly told the audience that [unpopular fic trope] was illogical and anyone who writes it is woefully misinformed and should be banned from writing [relevant character], that would in fact be a dick move.
"But the canon character would never--" it doesn't matter. You're shouting down the hall at the person who just happily did a whole seminar on their OOC version of that character. "But I don't like that the author chose to make them--" good, you're well-acquainted with your likes and dislikes, time to find another fic.
We all run into fics and interpretations we don't like. But there's a huge difference between loudly talking about it on Tumblr where the author can see it, and just venting in a private discord or other group. Also, gentle reminder that this is a hobby for most writers and something they do purely because they enjoy it. Stop being massive dicks just because you feel entitled to a certain flavor of fanfiction you will probably be chasing until the Reformation of Krypton.

if i had a nickel for every time i shipped an extremely competent and attractive agent of the government and his very serious second in command work wife who would follow him to the depths of hell and also happens to have light colored hair that covers half of her forehead…
i would have one nickel.

Okay, hear me out…
Just imagine Wade doing things for Logan that he is perfectly capable of; he grabs jars out of his hand and opens them for him, he ties his laces for him when they come undone, he leans over and lights his cigars, he puts blankets on him when he's sat in his armchair, and each time Logan feels like a mess because he doesn't know to respond to it, to someone taking care of him. Wade is doing these little things while calling him a princess.
Imagine the first time Wade realises how easily he can pick Logan up, and he carries a sleepy Logan to bed, and Logan finds himself liking being picked up and has a whole crisis over that. Because nobody treated him gently or acted as if he could need help.
Logan doesn't tell Wade he likes it, but maybe he starts handing jars to Wade to open just because he enjoys the act of Wade caring for him. Even if its unnecessary and silly.

Second one, no. Curly wanted to see the best in people, especially in a guy he considered a buddy, and that's why he couldn't accept that Jimmy did something so awful. It's a direct commentary on some men irl who hear that their friend SA'd someone, and immediately go, "what?? [Name]?? I know him! He's my best buddy! He would never!"
It's men who fully recognize that rape is an awful thing, but they're so far detached from it and trusting of their friends that they can't reconcile that horrible thing being something someone they see as a good person did. Curly wasn't afraid of Jimmy. He never was, until after the crash. He called him a close friend at several points in the game. Claiming "oh he just didn't know how to deal with an aggressive crewmate" is ascribing too much innocence to him.
The second criterion you want is that he cared deeply about Anya and wanted to believe her, but had a moment of cognitive dissonance that blinded him to the fact that his friend was a bad person.
But ultimately, Curly is complicit, and we cannot forget that, justify it, or water it down.
'curlys lack of proper intervention enabled jimmy to continue his abuse towards anya and the rest of the crew and his character is a showcase of how men refuse to acknowledge the issue and take it seriously when their friends turn out to be predators. his inaction becoming the initial cause of everyones demise in the end is part of the games commentary on rape culture and how it affects the victims and everyone around them'
and
'curly isnt an inherently evil person but in fact a very human and relatable character who was genuinely upset with wht jimmy did but didnt want to take drastic measures in tht very moment to avoid causing more harm to anyone bcuz he knew jimmy was unpredictable and prone to becoming aggressive and he tried to handle the situation carefully (altho failed to do so in the end)'
r 2 statements tht can coexist btw

a lot of people will also suddenly claim there must be an exception for their relative/child/spouse/etc. empathy dependent on relation not on humans just because they’re humans fuels this. oh yeah, and also, if you have money, you can buy the exception. naturally.

One of my favourite genres in the world is Lando Norris having THE most tight knit group of friends that he's kept for like a decade and constantly talking about how important his friend group is in keeping him human and grounded and seeing how much he carves a space for them in his big big ever expanding world. Like THE thing that makes Lando Norris so easy to love is seeing how his friends and family and people who know him love him and how much he loves them!

This is 100% correct. Crazy ass awesome friendships that carry the show through 8 seasons and 3-4 movies (might be off on the number of movies). I watched this show every Wednesday with my mom and we’d always be looking for pineapples in each episode.
It was just such a fun show to not only watch but share too. ❤️ I miss a super silly show like this. And we didn’t even touch on all the amazing guest starts they had and all their awesome episodes. 🥰🥰🥰
The reason Psych is the Important Show of All Time is because it said "friendship is the MOST important thing." Like, yes, the romances were good but the show spends even more time emphasizing and developing the friendships and that's why it rocks. Lassiter and Juliet love and support each other unconditionally without even the slightest whiff of romance and it is SO. REFRESHING. When Juliet almost dies, Lassie sacrifices his favorite gun to save her without any hesitation. He's the one there to hold her while she cries. She's his confidant. She leaves everything she knows behind so he can chase his dream of being chief without reprocussion. That's a deep, wholesome kind of platonic love. They also never had Shawn be jealous of how close Jules and Lassie are - instead, in the final episode, we see Shawn thanking Lassie for loving and supporting Juliet. We simply don't do that jealousy crap here. Lassie and Jules are best friends and that's an excellent thing. And then there's Shawn and Gus. Those characters are narratively and physically inseperable. The show makes it VERY clear that, without the other, neither one is complete. They balance each other and exacerbate each other's hijinks at the same time. They're closer than close and everyone around them just accepts it. It's just the way those two dumb boys are and no one is going to try to get between that. And then, of course, SO many friendships develop over the course of the show. Lassie and Shawn form a begrudging friendship eventually. Juliet and Karen end up bonding more than I think either expected. Friendship is the beating heart of this series and it's presented in a way that is unique and fun and I just don't see a lot of other shows that do it like Psych did.

I don't know I'm not done talking about it. It's insane that I can't just uninstall Edge or Copilot. That websites require my phone number to sign up. That people share their contacts to find their friends on social media.
I wouldn't use an adblocker if ads were just banners on the side funding a website I enjoy using and want to support. Ads pop up invasively and fill my whole screen, I misclick and get warped away to another page just for trying to read an article or get a recipe.
Every app shouldn't be like every other app. Instagram didn't need reels and a shop. TikTok doesn't need a store. Instagram doesn't need to be connected to Facebook. I don't want my apps to do everything, I want a hub for a specific thing, and I'll go to that place accordingly.
I love discord, but so much information gets lost to it. I don't want to join to view things. I want to lurk on forums. I want to be a user who can log in and join a conversation by replying to a thread, even if that conversation was two days ago. I know discord has threads, it's not the same. I don't want to have to verify my account with a phone number. I understand safety and digital concerns, but I'm concerned about information like that with leaks everywhere, even with password managers.
I shouldn't have to pay subscriptions to use services and get locked out of old versions. My old disk copy of photoshop should work. I should want to upgrade eventually because I like photoshop and supporting the business. Adobe is a whole other can of worms here.
Streaming is so splintered across everything. Shows release so fast. Things don't get physical releases. I can't stream a movie I own digitally to friends because the share-screen blocks it, even though I own two digital copies, even though I own a physical copy.
I have an iPod, and I had to install a third party OS to easily put my music on it without having to tangle with iTunes. Spotify bricked hardware I purchased because they were unwillingly to upkeep it. They don't pay their artists. iTunes isn't even iTunes anymore and Apple struggles to upkeep it.
My TV shows me ads on the home screen. My dad lost access to eBook he purchased because they were digital and got revoked by the company distributing them. Hitman 1-3 only runs online most of the time. Flash died and is staying alive because people love it and made efforts to keep it up.
I have to click "not now" and can't click "no". I don't just get emails, they want to text me to purchase things online too. My windows start search bar searches online, not just my computer. Everything is blindly called an app now. Everything wants me to upload to the cloud. These are good tools! But why am I forced to use them! Why am I not allowed to own or control them?
No more!!!!! I love my iPod with so much storage and FLAC files. I love having all my fics on my harddrive. I love having USBs and backups. I love running scripts to gut suck stuff out of my Windows computer I don't want that spies on me. I love having forums. I love sending letters. I love neocities and webpages and webrings. I will not be scanning QR codes. Please hand me a physical menu. If I didn't need a smartphone for work I'd get a "dumb" phone so fast. I want things to have buttons. I want to use a mouse. I want replaceable batteries. I want the right to repair. I grew up online and I won't forget how it was!
