Actually the funniest thing to happen in any of the mxtx fandoms is that in svsss, Shang Qinghua never published Shen Jiu's backstory because he didn't want to deal with the discourse, and then irl every other post I've seen about Shen Jiu is some kind of discourse

There's something genuinely inspiring about seeing a bunch of fanart and microfiction and deep meta analysis about a character you've never heard of cross your dash, and you assume they're from a piece of media you're not caught up on, but later you learn that it's some random person's OC that six of their friends are super enthusiastic about, and they only seem omnipresent because you happen to be following like three of those six friends. There truly is no minimum viable size for a character-based fandom.

So I'm a guard and I'm getting real tired of all the random shit my liege orders me to do that have nothing to do with guarding. Bringing out social media posts, obliterating twinks for existing, absurd metaphysical punishments, its so fucking annoying.
Surely my liege can afford people actually qualified to do these random odd jobs. I swear they're going to get assassinated one day and it will be because us guards were all sent to try and induce irritating fandom behavior towards some dude's favorite character.
Doesn't he have a country or fief or whatever to run instead of issuing odd commands?

sometimes a trans headcanon is 5 pages of careful textual analysis and reasoning and sometimes it's "i know this doesn't make sense but it's my favourite character and i get to decide the gender" and sometimes you have both within the same media and that's beautiful.

I see your pre-transmigration Shen Yuan in a t-shirt and sweats and raise you pre-transmigration Shen Yuan wearing the fussiest rich guy outfits and cosplay and traditional formal wear because why not. He's rich he's bored and he looks good in it. Throw in some wigs and extensions and jewelry for good measure. It helps him feel a little more in control of his life when he's well dressed.
Also explains how he knows how to wear Shen Qingqiu's clothes and do his hair without much issue.
Eccentric clotheshorse Shen Yuan.
#svsss#long post#i admit i don't know or care about hatsune miku but a chinese vocaloid with the surname luo would make a ton of sense for sy to cosplay#so headcanon readily accepted!#also absolutely on taobao

there is something to be said about how the the two major “socially inferior” characters—wei wuxian and jin guangyao—were shown to be extremely skilled at people-reading and cognizant of the social, hm, dynamics throughout the story. not in the same exact way, of course. wei wuxian’s social competence was about knowing how to approach people and endear them to him and knowing what to ask to receive what he wants, usually in terms of information. jin guangyao was amazing at anticipating other people’s needs and what they want to hear and thereby delivering things in a way that would placate them.
i bring this point up because these were two characters granted the least amount of social grace and yet the expectation was that they must maintain the niceties or be deemed singularly arrogant (we see this happen with wei wuxian because he does end up going openly against the sects; where behaviour previously considered unobtrusive is now labelled as attitude problems lol). i mean, while i do commend wei wuxian’s attempt to present his request about the wen remnants to jin guangshan with politeness, it’s also so bafflingly out-of-place in a situation where he’s rightfully calling out the unfair atrocities the wen remnants were being subjected to. jin guangyao’s entire character is built on his specific method of rising through ranks using his honeyed tongue and ability to not let the naysayers get to him. “son of a servant” and “son of a prostitute” are thrown at them and these tags can reduce everything good they have done for the cultivation society in the blink of an eye because they are, infact, considered to be valid criticism of their character. it’s the dichotomy of it where jiang cheng and nie mingjue and jin guangshan can be crude and aggressive and predatory and receive, at most, hushed criticism but have their authority intact, while wei wuxian and jin guangyao’s very standing is threatened by the callback to their social status. how they are forced to be so aware of people and their ways of thinking and make all these interpersonal considerations while the other characters are allowed to be way less self-aware about their behaviours in social settings because their position was never threatened to begin with. how wei wuxian’s “manipulative” abilities and jin guangyao’s “cunning” were products of their treatment by the cultivation world in the first place.
#mdzs#reminds me of a fic concept i saw floating around a year or so ago#where wei wuxian and jin guangyao swap lives#but despite the different starts it still ends up the same so wwx-as-jgy still ends up dying trying to protect the wens#and jgy-as-wwx arranges jiang cheng's murder and marries jyl to take over the jiang sect#it was the same society subjecting them to the same injustices and the difference remained how they each chose to respond#but ultimately the classism was the real problem

gilgamesh is the bigger man than me because if a snake ate my flower that grants immortality that i wanted to use for myself i wouldn't touchingly come to peace with my own mortality and the mortal legacy i leave behind. i would be like if there was a flower that could make me immortal maybe there are other ways

It's wild to think that liushen probably has a bigger age gap than bingqiu. Especially by the end of the story.
Like, we don't have firm ages for anyone other than Luo Binghe, but we know Shen Yuan is vaguely in his twenties when he dies the first time, that the Qing generation of peak lords are all within a reasonable age range of one another, and that Yue Qingyuan was a grown adult when he helped seal Tianlang Jun under the mountain. And that this happened after Shen Qingqiu had been accepted into the sect and become the successor of Qing Jing Peak, which, consider Shen Jiu was considered a late addition and also that he presumably didn't climb the social hierarchy of his peak overnight, probably means Yue Qingyuan was closer to 30 than 20 when he fought Tianlang Jun (assuming they weren't even older than that).
Which would put the Qing generation around their 40's, most likely, by the start of the story. Probably mid-40's, which works out for simplification sake because that would mean the best guess is that Shen Yuan is about 10 years older than Luo Binghe at the start of the story, and Liu Qingge is about 20 years older than Shen Yuan.
I mean we could absolutely take more generous estimates to get it closer to one end of a range or another, especially for a particular fic or whatnot, but this is like, the most reasonable guesstimate without doing any of that. I think? I mean you could feasibly make the bingqiu age gap as small as six years or as big as fifteen without really defying canon, and if we want to be very generous to Liu Qingge we could say he's the youngest of the peak lord and just barely squeaked into their generation and is closer to 30 than 40 and shorten the liushen age gap to 10 years instead, but there's also no real reason to assume that either. All things being equal, Liu Qingge being like 45 seems to be more likely than him being 30 or than him being like, 100, even though both are technically possible (to be honest we don't even know if he's actually younger than Yue Qingyuan, since peak lord hierarchy is about the rank of your peak, not your actual age).
Anyway of course eventually Shen Yuan dies again and stays dead for a few years, Luo Binghe gets to catch up to him a bit but Liu Qingge keeps going. Which just widens the liushen age gap (whatever it is) while shortening the bingqiu one. So even if the liushen gap's closer to a 10 years than 20, by the end of the story it's still probably bigger than the bingqiu gap.
I think what makes this extra amusing is that nobody would enjoy the revelation of all this, though. Luo Binghe and his age gap kink would be appalled to learn that his shizun is barely older than him. Liu Qingge (who is firmly in the thick of things with his childhood-enemies-to-lovers arc) would also probably not take it well to find out that he's been unwittingly attempting to rob a cradle.
Nobody likes this!
#svsss#bingqiu#liushen#scum villain#scum villain's self saving system#liu qingge and luo binghe would BOTH appreciate it if shen yuan could go get trapped in a narnia dimension or something#age a couple more decades in the span of a few hours and then come back with an artful grey streak in his hair or something#shen yuan: honestly I kind of thought the revelation that I wasn't the real shen qingqiu would take precedence over age gap discourse?#bingliu: >:(
