Campbell's Pond park for African Americans.
Cheraw State Park, Chesterfield County, South Carolina, United States
Cheraw is one of the small towns in South Carolina my family is from. It sits near the border of South Carolina and North Carolina. I had a friend who called people from the area part of my family is from "border hoppers" and when doing my own genealogical research it’s very true. Many people in the area including some of my family were back and forth between Anson County, NC and Chesterfield and Marlboro Counties in SC .

On this day:
On October 22, 1886, in Charlotte, North Carolina, rain fell from the sunny sky to the ground, every day for three weeks, between two red oak trees. The rain always fell sometime between 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. and lasted between ten and thirty minutes, whether there were any clouds in the sky or not. Anywhere from half an acre of ground to only the area between the two trees was soaked, depending on how hard the precipitation came down. After three weeks, the phenomenon stopped as abruptly as it had started.
During approximately the same time period, hundreds of people witnessed rain fall from a cloudless sky in Aiken, South Carolina, from morning till night, on two graves, ten feet square, in the local cemetery. Also in the same time period, in Chesterfield County, South Carolina, a rain storm lasted for two weeks; rain fell from a cloudless sky and gushed through the county's eaves, troughs, and gutters. Also in October 1886, rain flowed from a cloudless sky onto a twenty-five-foot-wide spot in Dawson, Georgia.
In October 1892, in Stillwater, Oklahoma, water fell for weeks on a large cottonwood tree while every place around it suffered from drought. In Ohio, water fell for days from a clear sky at Akron. Faculty from Ohio University investigated, but could not explain the phenomenon, though the water was discovered to have an "appearing-point" in the vicinity of a brickyard.

Phoenix Foundry
9 North Eighth Street
Built, after 1865
Demolished, between 1924-1950
Tumblr media
(Ancestry) — looking towards 9 North Eighth Street, date unknown
William B. Cook: competitor to Asa Snyder, and no shallow man he.
Tumblr media
(Library of Congress) — Beers Illustrated Atlas of the Cities of Richmond & Manchester, 1877 — Plate K — showing foundry location
It is only your shallow man who believes in luck-who limits his faith to the ruling of a star or the casting of a planet. The laws of gravity, of chemistry, of botany, and the other natural laws, are not more fixed and certain in their operation than those who push their way up the plane of social and rational life, and there develop their influence in the struggle which every man makes in life, from the boy's game of play up to the crowning act of individual achievement in work. The sublime faith that believes in the stars-that looks up and out upon the deep-vaulted night, and tries hard to formulate a faith that all men can accept and rationally founded-may be admired by us for the grandeur and vastness of the problems it seeks to solve;
Tumblr media
[HILL] — advertisement in Hill's Richmond City Directory, 1874-75
but a little reason, not too shallow or superficial in quality, will soon bring us back to the more rational basis of cause and effect, the same arithmetic of which may be accurately computed as the threads of an even web. Law is the basis of everything, and although it works by invisible hands and feet, it treads steadily in one path, and brings out the uniform result. The lucky man is the one who perceives  the chance of success, and seizes it at the right moment to make the success his own. He may be thwarted time and time again by adverse or unforeseen contingencies, such as no proper forecast, can effectually guard against; but a resolute faith in cause and effect in the industrial dogma that something comes from something and nothing comes from nothing, will bring him out successfully in the end.
Tumblr media
(Ancestry) — William Bennett & Jane Bath Cook on their wedding day, October 10, 1850
The owner of the Phoenix Foundry, Mr. William B. Cook, is a happy exemplification of the correctness of these reflections. He is a hard worker, and has had some hard rubs with "Adverse and unforeseen contingencies." He has been burnt out no less than three times in twenty-five years, but by dint of perseverance and the best of all personal qualities--pluck--he has risen each time, if not Phoenix-like, from the ashes of a previous establishment, yet like a resolute and determined man, who, when one chance fails him, is ready, nothing daunted, to strike for another.
Tumblr media
(Library of Congress) — Sanborn Fire Insurance Map from Richmond (1886) — Plate 15 — showing former foundry building now a livery
With him, work is victory. He takes no chances at luck, and consequently draws no blanks. Each blast of the forge, and each blow of the hammer, is what he has faith in, and leaves the rest to fortune. There are larger and more imposing establishments in Richmond, but his political economy is not to cut the throat of their competition, but to establish his own. No man is prouder of the prosperity of Richmond, arising from the other and larger establishments, than the energetic and public-spirited owner of the Phoenix Works. He seeks to share only in the general prosperity, and demands patronage only as he may show himself worthy of it.

[CHAT] — advertisement for Phoenix Foundry in Chataigne's Directory of Richmond, 1881
The Phoenix Foundry is on the east side of eighth street, between Franklin and Main. Prior to November, 1871, it was run by Messrs. Cook & Viles, but since that time Mr. Cook has been the sole proprietor. He employs a large force and turns out a large variety of general castings, besides manufacturing iron railings, balconies, verandahs, columns, caps, sills, vault doors and frames, and all kinds of iron work for buildings. In fact, about everything this side of the line of Architectural iron work is successfully turned out in his establishment.

His building is a large three-story brick, on Eighth above Main, with the foundry in the rear of it, and two stories above for machinery, woodwork, and pattern loft. He has recently completed and put up the large and comodious burglar & fireproof safe vault, in the new banking house of Messrs. Issacs, Taylor and Williams, on the corner of Thirteenth & Main Streets, which is said to be the largest safe ever manufactured south of "Mason and Dixon's line." Whether this be so or not, it is certainly large enough to satisfy and one that what our home institutions cannot do in the way of manufacturing mammoth safes, need not be sought for elsewhere.
Tumblr media

Mr. Cook is also constructing iron fronts for buildings, and doing not a little to the architectural taste and beauty of our city. The iron work for St. Mark's Church (Episcopal) is from his establishment, as well as numerous verandahs, balconies, railings, etc., of iron, put up during the past two or three years in different parts of the city. The iron work to the new office building of the Gas Works at Rocketts, with fine iron verandah and steps, was furnished by Mr. Cook. He has lately filled orders for Norfolk, for points in North and South Carolina, and other parts of the South, and he is confident he can compete, in quality and style of work, as well as in price, with any similar establishment in this or any other city.
Tumblr media
(ProQuest® Sanborn Maps Geo Edition™) — Sanborn Insurance Maps of Richmond (1924) — Plate 10 — showing former foundry building now vacant
Mr. Cook has had an experience of twenty-five years and upwards at the business in which he is now engaged. Born in an adjoining county, and coming to Richmond when he was a mere boy, he has spent his apprenticeship and whole business among us. He has had, as we have before intimated, some pretty severe rebuffs of fortune; but he has come out every time with a resolution to strike ten blows for success where he had only struck five before.
Tumblr media
(ProQuest® Sanborn Maps Geo Edition™) — Sanborn Insurance Maps of Richmond (1950) — Plate 10 — showing former foundry building now an auto parking lot
Starting first as a partner of Barnes & Co., he was afterwards of the company of Lownes & Cook, then of Cook & Viles, and now has the Phoenix Foundry as his own-- a foundry appropriately named from the circumstances already referred to, that on three several occasions he has seen his different establishments reduced to ashes.
Such business energy and capacity as he has shown, and such faith in his work as the means of ultimate triumph, entitled him to a liberal if not generous share of public patronage. [GILL]

April 2020 — looking towards the former location of 9 North Eighth Street
The growth of the Main Street canyon — the stretch of high-rises that today runs between Twelfth and Sixth Streets — and the proximity of the former iron works to it, did not bode well for its future. Some time after 1924 it was demolished and became a parking lot, a condition that probably lasted until the building that is now 8th & Main Apartments was constructed in 1968.
That’s a lot of changes for one location: foundry, livery, print shop, parking lot, office building, plus whatever else it was before the Evacuation Fire.

Horace King-Georgia and Alabama
Horace King-Georgia and Alabama
Horace King, 1807-1885, was considered the preeminent bridge builder in the South. It is believed he built over 100 bridges, most of them being in Alabama and Georgia. King was born into slavery in Chesterfield County, South Carolina. His enslaver, John Godwin, earned a bid to build a bridge over the Chattahoochee River. King moved with Godwin to Girard, Alabama, to begin the project. In 1846,…

USDA Eases Program Rules for South Carolina SNAP Participants Impacted by Florence
Release #:
0189.18
Contact:
USDA Press (202) 720-4623 [email protected]
Date:
09/20/2018
WASHINGTON, Sept. 20, 2018 – The U.S. Department of Agriculture today granted flexibility to allow South Carolina residents to replace food purchased with SNAP benefits that was lost due to power outages and flooding caused by Hurricane Florence. Over 185,000 impacted households in 26 counties now have until Oct. 15, 2018 to report food loss to the state and request replacement benefits.
“When this many people are facing immediate hardship in South Carolina, it’s crucial for USDA and the state to offer as much flexibility as possible to recover food losses,” said Acting Deputy Under Secretary Brandon Lipps. “This waiver will provide sufficient reporting time for households who are facing power outages, flooding, and other obstacles in the wake of this disaster.”
SNAP regulations normally require households to report food loss within ten days of purchase.  However, the state requested a waiver from USDA’s Food and Nutrition Service (FNS) to allow households additional time.
The waiver applies to the following counties: Berkeley, Beaufort, Calhoun, Charleston, Chesterfield, Clarendon, Colleton, Darlington, Dillon, Dorchester, Florence, Georgetown, Hampton, Horry, Jasper, Kershaw, Lancaster, Lee, Lexington, Marion, Marlboro, Orangeburg, Richland, Sumter, Williamsburg, and York.
FNS is ready to consider additional waivers and other actions that may be needed to help program participants who have lost food due to the disaster and to simplify the application process for affected households, upon request from the state.
For more information on FNS assistance during times of disaster, visit www.fns.usda.gov/disaster.

Thriving in an Economic Bubble during Anarchy
19. The Christian Succession – Inflation plus China Evergrande Group = UGLY
If this situation was not so dangerous from intentional behavior, the international recognition of the Biden Administration and the Demented Marxists (DMs) called Democrats that control Congress as being the greatest clown show in world history would be the best joke ever! It was fascinating to hear crowds in Rome chant FJB with an Italian accent. Such international acclaim. The majority of Americans realize that the 2020 election was a massive fraud because these clowns make the Keystone Cops look like brain surgeons. God is at work exposing evil.
Then I read the Pelosi’s wealth since 2018 has soared to over $300 Million based on two stock deals ($200 M when she was “invited” into the VISA IPO at a low price and she bought Tesla stock one day before Biden announced subsidies). Combined with The Fed Regional Presidents that resigned because of their stock trades, Hunter Biden selling five paintings for $75,000 each, and Joe Biden getting wealthy on a government salary… an impressive list. Is DC for sale? Monkey see, monkey do? Since the DMs are completing Obama’s “Fundamentally change the USA” slogan of converting us into his dream- a Marxist tin dictatorship – perhaps we should auction Federal jobs rather than paying salaries? Would we be any worse?
The data points over the last week have been almost overwhelming at times.
1. Vaccine mandates are destroying our supply chains, unleashing inflation and economic destruction in their wake. Southwest Airlines cancellation of hundreds of flights is but a visible example of the destruction. The greatest accomplishment of the Biden Administration is that they have created shortages everywhere of everything.
2. Ignore The Fed about inflation, prices are soaring. Perhaps we will RE-Learn that meritocracy is a great guide to hiring if you want a functioning economy.
3. Our government is paying $5 Million per day not to build the wall along our southern border and wants to send Billions to the Taliban for humanitarian aid. What?
4. It intrigues me that the polls say that 50 % of Democratic women think Biden is doing a great job. Momma Bears should be ticked off. Perhaps that will change when Momma Bear realizes the shortages are real and inflation is out of control.
5. DMs are concerned about the election in Virginia so they want to change the rules in mid-stream. They are consistent.
6. Demands for forensic audits keeps growing nationally (watch Wisconsin, Michigan, and Georgia, Delaware with South Carolina coming on strong). Virginia has one legislator with enough testosterone to demand a forensic audit, Senator Amanda Chase of Chesterfield County. The other Virginia Republican legislators must be eunuchs.
7. It appears our government is intentionally creating a constant series of crises such as labeling parents worried about their kids’ education to be “Domestic Terrorists”. The DMs have the FBI tracking soccer moms but not Antifa.
8. That a majority of Americans realize the election fraud is illustrated by the Brandon Brown NASCAR victory interview when a female reporter tried to spin the crowd chanting the FJB Biden Salute by saying the crowd was chanting “Let’s Go Brandon”. Now both are seen everywhere but the meaning is the same … “We know the truth.”
As the European equivalent of the Green New Deal collapses causing surging energy prices, inflation in European countries has soared. The Bank of England is now forecasting three rate increases in 2022 versus previously not expecting to raised rates until 2023 at the earliest.
Those in American leadership positions pushing the Green New Deal either are oblivious to the disaster unfolding in Europe or simply do not care because their objective is to destroy the USA. Since financial markets are global, interest rates increasing in Great Britain will pull our interest rates upward as governments compete for funding. The 10 Year US Treasury interest rate just increased from roughly 1.3% to 1.6%, a significant upward move for one week.
A Wall Street Journal columnist tried to explain how The Fed could taper Quantitative Easing (QE) reducing its purchase of 10 Year Treasuries and mortgages without impacting mortgage rates. The author stated that mortgage brokers have been profitable over the last few years and would subsidize mortgage rates to keep them low longer. Another DM fool identified.
Many financial market observers are in denial about the significance and impact of China Evergrande Group (CEG). The pattern emerging seems to closely parallel the collapse of Lehman Bros. CEG’s stock and bonds values continue to decline propelled by evidence that the disaster contagion is spreading to other real estate developers. The state-controlled banks will be bailed out by the CCP but problems will ripple through the Chinese economy because the apartment market represents almost two-thirds of Chinese household wealth. Sales are plummeting causing values to decline as the world’s largest Ponzi scheme collapses. One economic forecast has estimated China’s GDP growth in 2022 will be ZERO. Negative?
Economic crises tend to unfold over time. From our data bases we knew in November 2005 that the new housing market had collapsed in October. Home builders ignored the problem until mid-2006, the financial markets began to react in 2007, and Lehman Bros filed bankruptcy September 15. 2008, the trough was in 2009, but land market values peaked in 2007.
I do miss my America with a plethora of products at the lowest price at which manufacturers can make a profit, the stores are full of choices of products, and everyone can prosper if they are willing to work. That is capitalism and sustainable. What we are experiencing Marxism and it is not sustainable. To get back to capitalism, we need honest elections.
Economic Forecast:
The Fed will be in a box by mid-2022 with the DMs decisions causing soaring inflation in a stagnate economy that would be crushed by higher interest rates. Their choice will be to either (1) raise interest rates to tamp down inflation but crater the economy or (2) let inflation ramble by keeping interest rates low with more Quantitative Easing (QE). If this was a game, it would be fun to watch the DMs crater. But since this is the real world, we Deplorables/Domestic Terrorists will experience intense pain.
This week’s most interesting conversation about the economy was with a construction manager moving forward on numerous land developments for various clients. In our conversation, he brought up to me that his clients are asking him about “moth balling” developments. Let me rephrase his comment – in the hottest land market segment where there is a perceived shortage of product (residential lots) by the homebuilders (customers) wanting to buy the lots, land developers are nervous enough to think about how they can stop if the wheels come off.
Mortgage interest rates will increase as The Fed begins tapering their QE in November impacting all estate markets - residential, commercial, and land. Some segments of the commercial market are already in distress – the retail segment because of their inability to operate profitably and the office segment facing future occupancy reducing by 50% due to remote work. In any event, the highest probability is an ugly real estate market unfolds next year.
Despite the experience of Germany who committed to relying on green energy only to see their electricity prices SOAR and become UNRELIABLE leading to their demand for natural gas (Nordstrom II Pipeline) and building coal fired electric generation plants, Biden/DMS has made the USA dependent on OPEC for oil and wants to force us to “Green Energy”. That means we face a combination of higher energy prices, higher mortgage rates, and higher taxes of a magnitude that each individually would cause a recession. That is a disastrous combination.
Add to this toxic mix the collapse of the Chinese Evergrande Group (CEG) and other Chinese developers compounding the Chinese economic crisis. Keep one eye focused on the ripple effects from the collapse of CEG and the other eye focused on the Biden/DMS stagflation.
Slashing taxes, decreasing the size of government, and providing tax incentives to re-build the American manufacturing economy is the proven way to increase the size of the American economic pie allowing more assistance to those who need it. America has prospered under the hand of God because our country enjoyed the combination of Christianity, capitalism, and democracy. Biden and the DMs have us on a path that is a self-destructive and decreases the size of the economic pie. Everyone loses except the “Elites”.
Pray that our Lord and Savior raises up and protects the Patriots that demand forensic audits of the 2020 election in every state. Honest elections are the fulcrum of our American experiment. It is not vengeance to demand honesty and that everyone play by the same laws. Men make plans, but God ALWAYS wins. Every portfolio should contain some cash and a great piece of land remains The Best investment long term. Let’s Go Brandon!
“Be careful then how you live, not as unwise people but as wise, making the most of time, because the days are evil.”
(Ephesians 5:15-16) New Revised Standard Version, Oxford University Press)
Stay healthy,
Ned

Fortress Virginia (21)
Battery Dantzler 1820 Battery Dantzler Road, Chester May 1864-April 1865
Tumblr media
April 2018
In 1862, Confederate authorities considered locating the main defensive James River batter here to block the Union navy's approach to Richmond. They chose Drewry's Bluff instead because they feared that Union forces would bypass this position by cutting a canal through the river bend at Dutch Gap. The landing of Union Major General Benjamin F. Butler's Army of the James at Bermuda Hundred in May 18664 prompted the construction of this fortification.
Tumblr media
(Find A Grave) — Colonel Olin Dantzler
It was named Battery Dantzler in honor of Colonel Olin Miller Dantzler, 22nd South Carolina Infantry, killed in action nearby. Battery Dantzler anchored the northern end of the Howlett Line of earthworks across the Bermuda Hundred peninsula from the James River south to the Appomattox River.
Tumblr media
April 2018
The fort mounted two 20-pounder Parrott guns, two 7-inch Brooke rifles, two 8-inch smoothbore Columbiads, and two 10-inch coastal mortars. Battery Dantzler dueled daily with Union gunboats and land batteries until April 2, 1865, when its garrison abandoned it to march westward with General Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia. The march ended a week later at Appomattox Court House.
Tumblr media
(Beyond the Crater)
The construction of Battery Dantzler began on May 18, 1864. Two 20-pounder Parrott guns captured on May 16 at the Battle of Drewry's Bluff were among the first artillery pieces placed here. Union infantry occupied the battery on June 15, after Confederate General P. G. T. Beauregard's forces withdrew from Bermuda Hundred to defeat Petersburg against the first Federal threats.
Tumblr media
(Getty Images)
The guns here were dismounted and buried, and remained hidden until the Confederates retook the position the following day. Quickly remounted, the guns exchanged fire with Union vessels in Trent's Reach on June 21. The Union ironclad Tecumseh dismounted on 7-inch cannon with its last shot. (Civil War Trails)
Tumblr media
April 2018
There is very little of the battery left today. Earthworks and trenches are still visible, but the once commanding view of the river is largely obscured by brush and trees. Not a National Parks site, Battery Dantzler is sponsored by the Chester Station Camp #1503 and Chesterfield County Historical Society, so we should be grateful that at least this much remains to public view.
(Battery Dantzler is part of the Atlas RVA Project)
