The state fruit of South Carolina is the peach and South Carolina actually produces MORE (and tastier) peaches than the state of Georgia, despite Georgia being known as the “Peach State.”

Note
this blog has helped me so so much !! if u haven't answered something like this already, could i ask for some help/tips w southern vocabulary and how to go about writing it ?
Some Southern Vocabulary
A Month Of Sundays - This expression is another way of saying something has taken a long time or that something is unlikely to happen.
Bless Your Heart - It can be deployed sincerely, but if you're hearing "bless your heart" in the South, it probably has an edge to it. It's almost always accompanied by a good-natured, perhaps slightly exasperated, shake of the head. It can express empathy or judgment, or it can be said in place of a person's true feelings.
Icebox Pie - Any dessert prepared in a pie crust that has to be kept refrigerated.
Kinfolk - People to whom one is related.
Knee High - Small child (I’ve known her since she was knee high.)
Meat and Three - A main dish meat served with three sides of your choice.
Mess - The word mess generally has a negative connotation, but in the South, it takes on a whole new meaning—one with a positive spin. The context around mess matters. The entire phrase is usually something along the lines of you a mess or you’re a mess, with the discussion before it centering on something you’re doing. Think of it as a compliment, a way of saying you’re adorable or possibly clever or witty.
‘Nanner Pudding - Banana pudding made with sliced bananas, vanilla wafers and vanilla pudding; usually topped with whipped cream.
Over Yonder - When you're in the South, "over yonder" is a distant direction—any direction. The phrase may be accompanied by a gesture indicating north, south, east, or west. Over yonder down the road. Over yonder past the field. Over yonder toward the water tower. This phrase can be intensified by the addition of the word "way," as in "way over yonder."
Piddlin' - A piddlin’ is a small amount that’s not worth bothering with. Someone who is piddlin’ in the yard is wasting time and not doing a whole lot.
Preachin’ To The Choir - When you are preachin’ to the choir, you are trying to convince someone who already agrees with you. Save your breath. You’re all in solidarity.
Pretty As A Peach - This is a high compliment in the South since Southern states are known for their peaches. In fact, Georgia and South Carolina produce more peaches than any other states in the South.
Slower than Molasses in the Winter - If someone is moving very slow pace, you could say that they’re “slower than molasses in the winter.” The origin of this one is pretty straightforward: if you’ve ever tried to pour molasses out of a bottle in the cold, you’ll know that the thick liquid takes a long time to make its way out. Since molasses is a staple of Southern cooking, it makes sense that this phrase caught on and stuck around.
That Dog Won't Hunt - An idea, plan of action, or suggestion that simply isn't going anywhere. It's maybe a slightly nicer way of outright rejecting or disparaging an idea.
We’uns - Us; multiple people, including the speaker (We’uns love to get together for Sunday dinner.)
And here's a post that includes tips on writing accents and dialects (scroll to the end).

John Margolies (American, 1940-2016)
John Samuel Margolies was an architectural critic, photographer, and author who was noted for celebrating vernacular and novelty architecture in the United States, particularly those designed as roadside attractions. For almost forty years, he documented the most remarkable examples he found, publishing some of his discoveries in books and consigning the rest to an archive, which has now been purchased by the Library of Congress who, in a wonderfully gracious move, have lifted all copyright restrictions on the photographs. What if I showed you guys my Hetalia OCs for the 50 states that I've been working on for the past 2 months?
👀👀
Tumblr media
Delaware:
- Overly stressed all the time, he has a complex where he needs to feel important. So he opts to do work that would normally fall on the other 49 so he can seem important to them.
- He's the busyman of Delmarva, he gets everything squared away.
- He has the biggest, most effective puppy dog eyes in the world. They're just big and sad and it's hard to say no!
Tumblr media
Pennsylvania:
- Very active, has a gym in her home for sure even though she prefers to go outside and work out.
- She and Delaware are very close, as the first two states they became good friends (and New Jersey!). She does her best to protect Delaware when she can.
- Very straightforward, she doesn't mess around. You always know what to expect from her.
Tumblr media
New Jersey:
- Loud. So very loud. Always wearing gaudy makeup and unappealing clothing.
- She's very loyal as a friend though–her and New York hang out constantly, with half of their time dedicated to debating something or other loud enough for everyone around them to hear.
- She and New York have been in a battle over the ownership of the Statue of Liberty for a long time. Since the statue is technically on an island that belongs to her, but New York will not give it up. She owns the gift shop.
Tumblr media
Georgia:
- One of my favorite states, I love her and her design very dearly.
- I like to think of her as a Mary Sue type, where she's always busy and has an overwhelming amount of work to handle, but she does it all so easily and so effectively that you'd never guess how much she does.
- Also, she owns a peach orchid absolutely.
Tumblr media
Connecticut:
- "Um, actually—🤓👆" embodied.
- Everyone is sick of how entitled he is, because he acts like he's so much more intelligent than everyone.
- Which is funny because he is really really smart, but still not as smart as he pretends to act.
- He's one of the only states that's friends with Ohio.
Tumblr media
Massachusetts:
- Do not utter the word "revolution" around this man or he will go nuts.
- Very quick to act, very quick to anger. He likes to set things on fire—he always carries a lighter on him— and argue. If he ever came face to face with England, it would probably go very badly.
- He despises tea, to the point he physically cannot drink it.
Tumblr media
Maryland:
- The mediator of Delmarva, this man is the master of solving problems. He's the sweetest.
- Also, the best chef in the country aside from Louisiana and I cannot stress that enough. You know this man has a BIG kitchen in his house.
Tumblr media
South Carolina:
- The bimbo of the country okay.
- I just love the idea of her being so determined to be a farmer, but struggling so much because she's just not designed to be a farmer. But she won't give up even though she probably should.
- She's good friends with Georgia but her and North Carolina definitely have a rivalry going on.
Tumblr media
New Hampshire:
- Can this man calm down? Please?
- He basically bounces off the walls, definitely has ADHD, and always down to do somethint stupid.
- He spends a good portion of his time bugging Vermont because she's easy to annoy. New Hampshire and Vermont are very close though. The siblings ever.
Tumblr media
Virginia:
- I had to make one of them emo okay.
- She's the confident leader of Delmarva for sure. As the first state colonized, she's got a good heart for leadership. She's the state that works the closest with America directly.
- Despite being emo, she's very sweet.
Ahhh Image limit. Check repost for the other states!

Love them!!! Cass needs to let John love her. Also love that she calls him John haha, like everyone calls him Bucky haha
thank you for loving them!! Cass is scared of losing love which means she is afraid to have it too. And I also kind of am obsessed with her only ever calling him by his true name. she loves the foundations of him.
this is a somnophilia fic because i have no self control. also, new parents cass/john. HANDYMAN JOHN building his wife a whole ass house a la the notebook.
i am officially accepting that my blurbs are so fucking beyond blurbs. enjoy xoxo
warning: smut
Tumblr media
The book was open in front of her, the scene actually that was important to the plot and of interest to her, but her mind was in a different place. She'd had a very interesting dream about her husband last night. Cass had dreams about the way John would make love to her and the way he would touch her and open her and make her feel like she was ascending to the heavens. No matter how often they found the time to sneak away and coax an orgasm from her or him. No matter how many nights or mornings or afternoons he slipped into her with ease and they found bliss in each other's moans, for Cass it was never enough.
"What you reading, baby?" John appeared in the doorway of the back porch and she was reminded exactly what the problem was. He was building them a beautiful house in Northern Virginia with enough rooms for the two babies that were with their nanny at the park, the new baby that Cass had learned about a couple of days ago inside of her and all the other dashing little Egans that flitted across her dreams. There would be more room for their children to play, a more spacious kitchen for them to make memories around food, enough land for her horses to join them from South Carolina and even Butter was going to be afforded more than ample space for all his toys.
"Something that isn't really keeping my attention." Her attention was focused on the way he was eating the peach in his hand. The juice trickling down his arm and her tongue licking her lips those she ached to lick his skin.
"You want to take a bath with me before the babies get back?" He was sweaty from a day at the site of their new home, slightly sunburnt and a little dirty from the surprise garden he was building for her in the new backyard. "I ask but I've already filled the tub and was just waiting for you to add the bubbles." Cass tossed her book to the side with a nod and held his outstretched hand as they made their way through the house they were borrowing from her parents until their perfect home had finished construction. She had already asked them if the clawfoot tub could come with them. It held so many memories from bathtime with their children, Butter included, and important conversations with John. Some of them heavy and teary but others ending in kisses and gasps and symphonic declarations of love.
"I love our little demons but sometimes the quiet is very nice," she hummed as she settled her back to his chest in the comfort of the warm water and lavender smelling soap.
"How'd you convince Butter to go to the park with them?" he whispered as his lips brushed against her ear.
"I promised him he would get two steaks instead of just one for dinner for a week and that he could sleep in bed with me without having to fight you for it."
"For how long?" he scoffed.
"Forever." John rolled his but the annoyance disappeared as she snuggled closer to him. "Relax. I will still be able to take care of you first thing in the morning." The way their bodies came together in the morning was one of her favorite things in the entire world. The way he was groggy and raspy and had pillow indents on his cheek but was always rock hard for her. The way her panties were damp just at the sight of it, every morning like clockwork, no matter how many days it happened. Her thirst for him could never be quenched.
"Last night, you were making little sounds in your sleep."
"Oh?" she asked innocently as she turned in his lap with a bar of soap.
"Sounded like you were dreaming up something filthy, Spook."
"I was. And my husband did nothing to care of me when he noticed apparently." He wrapped his hand around her wrist where it was working the soap along his collarbone.
"You were asleep." He didn't want her to think he was taking advantage of her. Or doing something towards her without her explicit consent. Even though they were married with two babies, John never wanted to be improper towards her.
"And I'm telling you that doesn't matter." The soap dropped into the water with a splash so her hands could cup his cheeks. "Next time I am wet and in need of you, my husband, I want you to take care of it. Please, Johnny, promise?" He couldn't find the words to respond so he kissed her instead. Nothing turned him on more than Cass' evolution to embracing her sexual desires and just asking him for what she wanted. He was proud that he had unlocked such an insatiable side to his precious, proper and polite wife.
"I promise, Mrs. Egan, I promise."
-
A night of two later when the dreams came back, John watched and listened with a smirk. There was a wet spot slowly growing in the center of her panties and her breaths were turning into slow and soft moans. He kissed the top of her shoulder and pulled the hem of her nightgown so it rested at the bend of her waist. His fingers slipped below the elastic band and he groaned himself at how aroused she was just by dreaming of him.
"John," she moaned but her eyes stayed closed. Her eyebrows knit together as he circled a particularly sensitive spot. His own gaze remained focused on her as he tested one finger in and out of her. Tested running his thumb over her clit in unison. Her legs opened at their own accord, her hip bucking up into his hand to chase further friction.
"Good girl," he whispered as a flush crept up on her chest and she began to pant. "My sleepy little love." Her eyes slowly fluttered open as pleasure took root in her facial features, her mouth dropping open and her hand pressing to his as if he would ever dare to move it.
"Oh, fuck, John," she breathed as he stuck two fingers in her mouth to keep her quiet and chased her hips as they tried to escape the pleasure he was giving her. She sucked on those two fingers like a lollipop as she settled back down to earth and hummed satisfactorily as he lazily kept thumbing at her clit and pulled his fingers from her.
"Here you go, baby. Taste how sweet my pretty wife is." He spread his fingers to marvel at the way her cum coated them and watched, enraptured, at the way she licked at her own arousal. "Better than your dream?"
"There's one thing missing."
"What's that?" Cass hooked a finger around the crotch of her panties and pulled them to the side. "You coming inside of me."

================================================
My alarm rings at five in the morning, and I force myself to rise. I breathe in deeply, trudge to my mirror sink, and pick up my toothbrush. As I stare at my reflection, I think to myself, was being a doctor really worth it? I quickly pick up my pace. If I didn't do it now, I would never do it, not with my schedule. I get my keys and rush to my car. I get to the hospital, walk in, and get straight to the things I need to do.
“Hey, sooo how was the date?” My friend and coworker Becca asked me as we were changing into our scrubs for the day.
I sigh thinking about it. I mean, he was cute and nice but for some reason, I just couldn't see him being my person. “It was okay, I mean, I don’t think there is going to be a second one.” I didn't look into her eyes knowing there would be a little disappointment behind it.
“Y/n Grimes! That is the fourth guy I've set you up with within the last month and not one guy, not one you liked!” She whined, in disbelief that I wasn’t completely enamored with my date.
“I'm sorry Becca, they were all… great, just not for me.” I patted her shoulder in comfort as I closed my locker. I mean it's not like I haven't tried, I just haven't had the time or the desire since I started medical school, since… Hunter.
I walk over to my station and look over the patients I have for the day. As I looked at the clipboard, lots of people were drawn to the news on the TV. “Today we are getting reports of a sickness breaking out in Thailand. Patients are dying from a bite from another infected. We will continue to report. Sue Parker, signing off for now.” What!? I have never heard of anything like that. I knew the human mouth was toxic…but like that? I'm sure they would have a cure soon, I thought to myself. I was attempting to self-soothe so I could focus, I just never knew how wrong I could be.
Throughout the day, I have had this feeling deep in the pit of my stomach that something is wrong, very wrong. I tried drinking water, medicine, and food to try to settle but nothing would work. Then I got the phone call that would change my whole life.
“Hello?” There was a pause on the other line. It was my mom, Lori. “Mom, what's wrong?” My heartbeat started to ramp up filling in the silence.
“It’s your dad… he’s been shot badly.” She finished through a shaky sob. At that, my whole world tilted. Things started to blur and I didn’t even notice I had fallen on my knees with tears streaming down my face.
“I’ll be right there.”
================================================
I had taken all my sick days and then some, but I wasn't going to let my job be in the way of my family. I left right after work, driving straight to my apartment and gathering all that I could carry in two suitcases. I didn’t know how long I would be gone. All I knew was I had to get to my family. I turned off my lights, grabbed my locket, looked back and closed the door, locking it tight. I didn't know that was going to be the last time I would ever see my leaky faucet and nearly dead houseplant I neglected.
The drive from South Carolina to Georgia had never felt so long. The trees passing by my eyes began to look brushed, as if painted, indicating how fast I was driving. I drove straight through the night, thinking If I stopped for one minute he wouldn't be there when I got home. I finally got to my home in the great state of sweet peaches, which now left a bitter taste in my mouth. I get to the hospital breathing deeply as a futile attempt to calm down. It's funny in a twisted way. I go in every day to my job to take care of other people. I would never think it would be the other way around.
I walked to his room and saw my little brother Carl sitting with our mom next to him. He was reading a comic book. He looks up and sees me.
“Y/n!” He drops the book and runs to me. I scoop him into my arms warmly.
“Hey, bud.” I just held him in strength and comfort that we both needed.
“Dad’s going to be okay, right?” He asked while looking up with his blue eyes, thinking I would know the answer because of my job. I wish I did.
“Of course he is.” I have never lied like that to him before. Mom gets up right behind him.
“Hi, sweetie.” She said in a soft voice clearly sleep deprived. She clearly hadn’t changed or showered since she received the news.
“Hey, Carl, here's two dollars. Can you go get some candy for us?” I nodded at the vending machines trying to distract him so I could talk to her. He gets a smile, grabs it and runs to them, probably the first smile in the last few days. I turn back to her trying to hold back tears, but a few slip down anyway.
“How is he… really please don’t lie to me.” She glances down at her ring thinking about my question. She tightened her fists in sadness and frustration.
“A coma, he was shot in the lower chest. The doctors have no idea how long it’ll last.” At that, the floodgates were opened in my eyes and hers. We embraced each other tightly.
“So Shane got him here?” I wiped the tears before Carl could see.
“Yeah, he was there and got the medics right on the way.”
“Okay, I’m going to go see him if that’s okay,” I asked with a little shake in my voice not even believing I had to ask this.
“Of course baby, I got Carl.” I give a small smile, walk to his room, and open the door slowly. There he is, in a room I see every single day- and it’s almost impossible to enter. The medics had him on an IV drip and oxygen, a bandage covering his wound.
“Hi, Dad.” I sat in the chair next to the bed. Listening to the machines instead of him talking was like torture. “It’s your favorite daughter, Y/n.” I chuckled at that, a joke that we always kept running considering I’m his only daughter. “So, work has been work, I don’t think there will ever be a shortage of people making stupid mistakes to end up in the ER,” I once again joked to the silence, hoping I would hear something back. “Um…so Mom, Carl and I really miss you…I'm asking you to wake up.” I’m holding his hand and a tear falls on it. “I remember the day you guys adopted me…the best day of my life. I remember you telling me that nothing bad would ever happen to me as long as I'm your daughter so… please don’t break your promise.”
================================================
Being in the house just felt… wrong at this point. Dad had been in the coma for about two weeks and just sleeping and knowing my dad wasn’t in the other room sent chills down my spine. Those reports of that virus that caused people to die from a bite have now entered the states, which only heightened my stress. Every day they ramp up more and more. My head tells me to go help people in need of medical attention but my heart is keeping my feet right where they are.
“Hey kiddo.” Shane had entered the kitchen as I looked at the reports on the computer. I scoff at the nickname.
“Shane, I am twenty-seven so you can stow away that kid crap.”
“You will always be my- a kid to me.” I hear the hesitation and cringe.
“Yeah yeah, well I think having a full-time career and doing taxes has earned me the title so I would appreciate it if you stopped using it.” I got up and poured myself a drink to emphasize that I wasn’t that sixteen-year-old anymore. I sigh and stare down into the crystal shot glass and amber liquid that hopefully would distract me a little. “Shane…I never got to thank you for helping Dad…so, thank you.” He puts his hand on my shoulder.
“Of course, I would do anything for my- my best friend’s family, hell you are family.” There was that cringe-worthy hesitation again.
================================================
It was three weeks in and things were getting scary. They had canceled Carl’s school, and unessential businesses were closing. The signs said they would open again when the cure to the mysterious disease would come out. Still no sign of my Dad waking up. I tried to focus on Carl so as not to have him worried. Key word: try.
“So what is your favorite comic book? I can voice the characters like I used to do.” I was sitting on his bed smiling at him while he sat on the floor.
“Y/n, what if Dad doesn't wake up?” He asked while flipping through his comic book to try to distance himself from his very own question. I take the comic book so I can garner his full attention.
“Dad is going to wake up, okay? Because he’s Dad and would do anything to come back to us. He is fighting to get back and he will.” He just hugs me.
“It’s going to be okay Carl, now choose your book.” He happily chooses his favorite and hands it to me. Maybe this will help me too.
================================================
Only hospitals were open now. The TV only runs emergency broadcasting on where to go if your city needs it. I entered the hospital, heading to check on my Dad. Every nurse and doctor was busy and looked stressed. The ER was completely full- some people held their necks or arms, blood seeping through whatever they had used to bandage it. Again, my head told me to do my job, but I just walked to his door. He still looked the same. “Dad, things are not good. So many people are dying and getting hurt. I have never seen this as a doctor or in general. So I need you to wake up and come back to us. I need you.” I grabbed his cold hand and my locket at the same time. “I love you, Dad.” I got up and needed some air. As I walk out my phone rings.
“Hello?”
“Y/n!” It was Becca.
“Becca what's wrong!?”
“The dead- they woke up.” She said so calmly which told me she wasn't joking.
“Becca, what are you talking about? The dead?” Was it that virus she was talking about?
“You have to kill the brain to kill them.”
“Becca you aren’t making any sense!” I couldn't believe what I was hearing.
“I'm happy you're with your family, I now regret not making my own. Hey when you finally get with someone, can you name your kid after me? That way I can keep living in some way.” At the end of her sentence, I could hear some screams and moaning in the background.
“Becca!?”
“Rember, kill the brain to kill them. I love you Y/n. Goodbye.” She hangs up.
“Becca! Becca!” She was gone. I tried to call her again but all I got was a busy signal.
“Fuck!”
“What are you still doing here!?” A nurse runs up to me asking frantically.
“I'm visiting my Dad.”
“Visting hours are over at four p.m. now due to the sickness going around, so go home.” I then notice blood dripping down her arm.
“You're bleeding, I can get someone for you.” I turn to get help, but she pulls me back.
“Nothing can help me now.” What the hell does that mean? I thought, confused. “Go home to your family, your dad will be fine.” I am practically pushed out the door.
================================================
The next day Hell broke out. My mom packed just in case we had to leave but we couldn't- Dad was still sleeping. The TV had stopped working because the power had gone out two hours ago. I then see Shane’s car pull up.
“Okay, it’s time to GO!” He shouted out and the three of us were confused.
“Shane, what is happening out there?” My mom asked.
“The… I'll explain later, but right now we need to go!” He starts to grab our stuff and brings it to the car.
“What about Rick?” He stops and has to look down.
“I'm so sorry he’s… dead.” I grab my keys and head to the door.
“Y/n where are you going?!” He screamed at me.
“To get my dad.”
“I'm sorry, Y/n, he is dead.”
“Then I’ll see him for myself.” I turn but before I can turn the doorknob I’m knocked out.
“You’ll thank me when you see.” That’s the last thing I hear as everything goes black, not fully knowing what the new world would bring.
