I just love the range of the queer couples this season so far. Lucius and Black Pete having a sweet reunion and openly communicating, Stede and Ed having a break up and finding their way back to each other story for the century, and Olu and Jim are collecting people for their polycule like they’re Pokémon

If anybody knows of any book rec lists going around that list the spear cuts through water by Simon Jimenez please send them my way. 🙏
I genuinely don't remember where I heard of it. It was just randomly on my Libby holds, I decided to trust past me's judgement and give it a go, but then it went the full 14 days and auto returned.
So I put it on hold again, now I'm tearing through it, highly recommend, but I really wanna know where I heard of it.
I'm loving the layered story telling, and the asides from other characters like a Greek chorus, works phenomenally in audio format

doing a lil august reading wrap up because apparently i read 13 (!!) books. in chronological order (bolded are those i recommend):
city of stairs by robert jackson bennett: quite the interesting read. i think the character work in this one is a standout, as well as the world building. the good thing is i have no idea where this trilogy is going so it's exciting. the audiobook for the second book arrives in 2 weeks on my shelves on libby so I'll be reading the sequel soon
braiding sweetgrass by robin wall kimmerer: this one took me a whole entire year to read and finish lol. no comment. or maybe one comment: i think i'd have found this book a lot more eye opening if i had read it three years ago so right book wrong time i guess? i do recommend it i just think it didn't impact me as much as i thought it would
the blighted worlds by megan e. o'keefe: this one hit me like a truck!! i was so obsessed. it's a sci-fi space opera with an element of horror and an interesting romance sub-plot. basically everything i love lmao. i really do recommend this book it might actually be my fave of the month
sanctuary by ilona andrews: i have to stay up to date on all things kate daniels-related to this spin off was high on my tbr. it was a lot of fun but it petered out toward the end
where the dark stands still by a.b. poranek: a bit of a let down not gonna lie. the gist of my opinion is that it felt underdeveloped and in turn i felt under-interested in whatever was going on
shadows of self by brandon sanderson: once again i am begging the protagonists of this series to stop being aggravating
the fractured dark by megan e. o'keefe: continuing my obsession with the devoured worlds trilogy... unfortunately i have to wait on my libby hold to get the audiobook of the next one (i read with my eyeballs and listen at the same time to help with concentration)
the right to sex - feminism in the 21st century by amia srinivasan: i read this book because i know of two people who broke up with their significant other (one of them resulting in a divorce) after reading this book so i had to know what srinivasan had cooked in there and yeah she did cook.
the way of kings by brandon sanderson: just part of my re-read in preparation of the release of wind and truth in December. this month we tackle (again) words of radiance teehee
just for the summer by abby jimenez: womp womp womp. idk what it is with romance authors these days they're in a competition with themselves to portray the healthiest love stories but this one teetered on the wrong side of boring one too many times and the volume to therapy-speech in this one was staggering.
the ex vows by joyce jessica: twas a cute poolside read, it's nothing revolutionary but it was pleasant enough and it didn't make me roll my eyes like just for the summer jdkjgsk at least the love interest had a personality and a life... i mean it's fiction so it's not a life but it appeared as if he contained multitudes or something
funny story by emily henry: I'll go ahead and say it nobody writes a contemporary romance quite like miss henry because she's got the secret recipe for the right balance between heartfelt feelings and amusing situations + her dialogues feel a lot more natural than most (though if i had to nitpick she always has this side character who's a fountain of wisdom and gives you life-changing monologues but i guess such people exist out there)
the thief by megan whalen turner: the megans are really out in full force because this is another book written by a megan that i loved so much. yes half of this book is a fairly episodic journey across made-up countries, yes i ate it up, yes the second half is worth the wait (if you were out of patience, which i wasn't, bc i was having fun) and yes the plot twists are chef's kiss. "gen's ambitions are his own" is the perfect summary. everand has all the audiobooks so you know what I'm gonna do... that's right... listen and read at the same time
as an aside the tandem reads i do with both books and audiobooks happen only when i like the narrators. if i find a narrator i like i stick to them like glue because they're few and far between as far as my picky ass is concerned. i never do romance audiobooks they're the worst...

Ranking DC Pride 2024
8. Phantom Rodeo (Jules Jourdain/Circuit Breaker, Jay Garrick/The Flash)
Tumblr media
Dead last because 1 - it's not self-contained. 2 - it has nothing to do with anything Pride related and 3 - it's the return of the complete rando from last time. At least before the incredibly cool couple of Jess/Flash and Andy/Aquawoman featured heavily but no, because of detractor 1 Jay is here instead. Personally, I don't care about Circuit Breaker and I really hope someone else gets their spot next year.
7. "Hello, Spaceboy" (Starman/Mikaal, Komak)
Tumblr media
If I knew who either of these characters were, this would probably be a lot higher. But the competition this year is steep so at 8 they go. Komak and the blue-purple warp zone 80s color pallet is REALLY slick. I thought I was familiar-ish with Starman but clearly there are multiple people running around with that name who have nothing to do with the JSA.
6. "Lessons in Astral Projection" (Nia Nal/Dreamer)
Tumblr media
I stopped watching the CW shows that weren't about Black Lightning or Batwoman a looong time before Dreamer was intro'd (or after? I know I wasn't watching Flash way before she came along) but I knew of her and thought her powers and connection to the Legion of Superheroes was cool. I didn't like that there was no confrontation with Maeve in the story but it definitely would have gotten in the way of the feel-good affirmation vibe of the story.
5. Spaces
Tumblr media
I'm 99% sure I've seen mention of Phil Jimenez across various DC fan spaces, so the only surprises here were that he was LGBT and that they were bringing back the real-person issue-ender like they did Mr. Conroy. It was nice seeing his journey, and it being so well-told is a real plus. No superheroes anywhere in sight though, save Lynda Carter's Wonder Woman.
4. Marasmius (Pamela Isley/Poison Ivy, Janet-from-HR)
Tumblr media
Now THIS one was a ride. The opening left me a little rudderless and I'm not the biggest Harlivy fan so I thought I wasn't gonna get much out of this but if there's one thing I can believe, it's that if we had interplanetary travel the 'phobes would preach their nonsense across the galaxy. Ivy being an anti-villain is used to great effect here. No hand-wringing about morals, no reasoning with hate. Just do unto others as they would do unto. VERY cathartic.
3. Bros Down In A-Town (Jon Kent/Superman, Jay Nakamura, Ray Terrill/The Ray, Miguel Barragan/Bunker)
Tumblr media
This one 3rd because I relate heavy to feeling weird about being openly LGBT out and about in public. I thought it was a surprising feeling that doesn't get touched on a whole lot because people generally don't like to see that type of real queer struggle being depicted in media that's supposed to be heavy on escapism. This artstyle though. I follow the artist on twitter because it fascinates me how one person's character can bleed through so transparently in the way they draw.
2. The Rivers and the Lakes that You're Used To (Jackson Hyde/Aquaman, Ha'Wea, Orion)
Tumblr media
My bias for Jackson Hyde is showing but this story was also incredibly cool on its own merits. Orion being stone-facedly het for half of it was a choice but my boys showed up and officially got together - which I was surprised to learn hadn't happened long before now - so of course it shot up further in the rankings than it otherwise may have. Him saying he feels like himself when he's around his boyfriend is just *chef's kiss*.
1, Steeling Time (Natasha Irons/Steel, Traci Thirteen/Traci 13, John Constantine, Xanthe Zhou)
Tumblr media
Natasha and Traci's appearances were the only things about this I got spoiled on, but after reading this they've instantly shot up to join Jackson and Ha'Wea in my pantheon on ships. I do like how it showed the steps to reconciliation and they were both still clearly open to the idea of rekindling things eventually. But this artstyle makes me want to see a webtoon of these two YESTERDAY.

Archie Jimenez (backstory!)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
When I start to tumble from the sky
You remind me how to fly
Lately I've been feeling not alive
But you bring me back to life
Even when we fade eventually to nothing
You will always be my favorite form of loving
-Cloud 9, Beach Bunny
Out of the corner of Archie's eye, she catches sight of the yarrow pot wobbling dangerously close to the edge of the chair. One more tilt of the ship and it begins to fall.
Quick as the snakes she was raised with, Archie reaches out one hand from Olu's side to catch the pot before it breaks.
As Archie had once learned in the snake cult, yarrow is not just a rather hardy plant, able to survive at sea, but it is a symbol of healing. Of good things to come. (Much like Archie's own matelotage bracelet.)
So it's no wonder that as the storm begins to break, Olu finally opens his eyes and offers them both a tired but breathtaking smile. “I could get used to waking up to the two most gorgeous faces I’ve ever seen.”
And Olu’s covered in sweat and his eyes are exhausted but he’s beautiful, so beautiful, because he’s alive and he’s looking at them both with the utmost adoration in his eyes.
“You’re telling me, mi sol,” Jim says as Archie's hand goes to Olu's cheek, cradling his soft face in her calloused fingers. She gives absolutely no shits about possibly catching whatever infection he might have- she puts her mouth on his, stealing a soft kiss from his overheated, chapped lips.
The floors are still swaying slightly. There are books to be put back on their shelves.  Archie has no idea what there is to clean up on deck (though she has faith that Mel and the others were able to tack everything down in time), but she can handle any amount of clean up if she gets to know that Henry Morgan failed in his last act alive. He could not steal this last lovely thing from her.
-aletterinthenameofsanity, if you should lose your way (there is a place here in this house that you can stay)
Archie-centric story, yes please! It was so much fun to get a fic that explored Archie's backstory/feelings while also informing the main thrust of the story: what would happen if Captain Olu was ever incapacitated on the job and how that would affect everyone on the crew, from Archie and Jim to Izzy, Lucius, and Frenchie. We get some great confrontation scenes (Archie and Jim taking out Henry Morgan AND Lucius pushing Izzy into doing his job as acting Captain are *chef's kiss*) as well as some good hurt/comfort from all parties involved- everything I could want in a fic!

barely posted about the books i read last month but here they are!
i did talk about murderbot & these letters end in tears, and i just finished blessings & y/n at the end of the month. i liked reading blessings back to back with these letters end in tears, but it did also kinda emphasize the issues i had with these letters.... blessings, unrestricted by the letter format, felt way more intimate & had the bonus of alternating povs which i really enjoyed. that being said both are decent reads that give some insight into lgbt lives in both cameroon and nigeria, and i appreciated them for that. they're also both debuts, so i'll be keeping an eye out for more from both authors in the future.
y/n was. Weird. there is no way for me to review this book so i just havent lmao. it's not rooted in reality, it's like one long fever dream, and i did actually enjoy the first half. the mc is pretentious and completely obsessed with a kpop idol which leads to her spiraling and writing really intense y/n fanfic about him (and ultimately stalking him to seoul after he retires from the band). but it is WEIRD!!! like. that synopsis does not really give you an idea of how bizarre this book is. unfortunately the second half really lost me, it dragged on for way too long and the pretentious writing, while amusing at first, just got exhausting to read. i didn't hate it but i didn't really like it, either... just a weird experience all around.
and finally. the spear cuts through water.... favorite read of the year so far, it's shot up to my current favorite book of all time. mr. jimenez..... this book is just. a masterclass in storytelling. there are about 3 different layers going on simultaneously, with the frame story, the inverted theatre performance, and then the story of keema and jun. and the restraint this author had..... there are so many little threads to this narrative that he holds on to for SO long, and i really enjoyed seeing this trust in the reader. so many books these days overexplain themselves or talk down to the reader, but this one really trusted us to be patient and to follow the story along with the "you" in the book. and the way everything slowly unravels and then weaves back together at the very end..... OUGH. chef's kiss. i cannot recommend this book enough. so so so good.
umm and that's all. i'm tandem reading thirst with audio & the physical book and also reading the fireborne blade to start off sapphic september. i have at least 6 books lined up to get thru so fingers crossed i manage it and maybe even more 🤞 next month we will be going into a full vampire lockdown for halloween so i'm excited for that >:)

Book Blurb: It’s hate-at-first-sight when a jilted Irish chef returns home to Inishmore and immediately clashes with a mouthy American tourist. This steamy romance novel by New York Times bestselling author Amy Ewing is perfect for fans of Abby Jimenez and Tessa Bailey.
Cordelia James was once at the top of her game—a renowned street photographer with a massive social media following, gallery showings in Chelsea, and a lucrative book deal. But after the sudden death of her father, Cordelia can barely force herself to leave her apartment. That is, until she sees an ad for a summer gig at a cozy cottage on Ireland’s picturesque Inishmore island. Cordelia is on a plane before she can talk herself out of it.
The moment she steps off the boat, she crashes—literally—into Niall O’Connor, a grumpy local who’s just returned home to Inishmore from Dublin. Niall is nursing a broken heart and trying to patch up a broken life, and he has no time for posh American tourists. The more Cordelia’s and Niall’s paths cross, the more they make each other’s lives hell. But as with all rivalries, their hatred is about to reach a tipping point—and it’s going to heat up their cool coastal nights.
Featuring a lovable band of quirky supporting characters, The Irish Goodbye is a steamy, emotionally gripping tale of love, passion, art, food, and finding where you belong.
Review:
A photographer dealing with grief, looks to find inspiration by renting a cottage in Ireland... only to encounter a recently jilted grumpy Irish chef and sparks fly. Cordelia James was a renowned street photographer with everything going for her: a large following, gallery showings in New York, and a book deal... but the sudden death of her father leaves her struggling to even leave her apartment. Cordelia has been grieving for two years and decides that she's going to get out of her apartment, she sees an ad for a summer job at a cozy cottage on Ireland's picturesque Inishmore island and instantly buys a ticket. The moment she steps off the boat she crashes (literally) into Niall O'Connor, a grumpy local who has returned from Dublin after finding his fiancee sleeping with his business partner in the restaurant he was planning on opening. Niall and Cordelia immediately get off on the wrong foot but can't avoid each other as it's a small island and everyone knows everyone. Yet as they spend more time together on the cozy island filled with sweet characters, they begin to heal and fall in love... but Cordelia is only meant to stay for three months... how will their relationship work after her time is up? This was such a sweet and fun read, it gave me Leap Year (movie) vibes and I adored it. The romance was really sweet and fun and I loved that both of these characters were healing and found comfort in each other. The island itself and the community was amazing and so sweet. This book was just a feel good book with a bit of spice *wink wink*. I would absolutely recommend it!
*Thanks Netgalley and Alcove Press for sending me an arc in exchange for an honest review*
