Update with Itch.io - UK Edition

As we all know, UK OSA recently came to play for UK residents. Which means itch.io had to comply to the new rules (read more about here).

Essentially, until itch finds an acceptable way of complying with the "Check people's ID" rules from the new regulations, they are geo-blocking any NSFW page. This includes (afaik):

Project pages

Profile pages displaying geo-blocked projects!!!*

*right now I don't know if it's just listing games widget-style, collections are affected, or if having basic links towards NSFW projects in your profile description counts too.

If you are a UK resident landing on a creator page with NSFW content, you probably will end up with a screenshot like this:

If you are a creator looking to see if your project(s) is affected by this, you can find whether a project is geo-blocked by:

Going to the Distribute tab of your project

Click Geo restrictions

You can also appeal the decision by contacting itch.io support.

totally forgot about this book i preorder that i received today, i think it may be of interest to my audience:

i've posted here and on my blood choke blog previously about the lack of butch trans femme & trans women voices, so when this book crossed my radar a few weeks ago i immediately ran to preorder it. i'm not familiar with the author - i'm simply not that involved in trans spaces online outside of my own small niche on tumblr - but some of you may have already seen this floating around if you are.

hoping to sit down and read it all in one sitting today as it's quite short, around 100~ pages. thought i would share :-)

final itch.io update (for now): it looks like all of my work has been reindexed, including siren's call since i removed the option to tip. my money remains "in review" which i assume is where it will stay until they find an alternative to stripe or they just reject my earnings outright. all of the money i've made is from siren's call, which is erotica and thus "sexually gratifying" so 🙄 we'll see. i've seen people with a lot more money than me stuck in limbo, whose games aren't even adult/nsfw, and i know even before all of this itch.io was very slow at initiating payouts... i'm not sure what i'll do going forward, i'm glad all of my work is back up but can i just Never make money off of it now ?

TLDR:

Free (aka no payment) NSFW content is being re-indexed. If your paid NSFW page is moved to a No payment option TODAY, it will also be re-indexed.

Itch will also introduce a new Content Warning system for NSFW pages (not detailed in this post)

Stripe is blocking card payments for adult content that is “content designed for sexual gratification” due to "restriction placed on them by their banking partners".

Itch is looking for payment processor alternative for NSFW content.

First off, I'm sorry to not only you, but all of the Devs that have to deal with this!

With that said, there are some work arounds for the deindexing. Following the links in your bio will take viewers there, no problem. Also if people know the game they are looking for they can just use Google. Typing the name of the game + itch should have it pop up easily. (Ex. "The Northern Passage Itch")

What I did and what I suggest others do is add the games to a personal collection on Itch and follow the creators. As long as you do one of those two, you can still see the things that the authors do. I spent a few hours yesterday adding as many NSFW/Shadowbanned Games as I could find to a collection.

yeah this is why i don't necessarily want to remove my games... the majority of my readers find me directly through itch.io, i have a lot of followers there, and even if i don't show up in the browse/search my games are still in a lot of collections (i get quite a few visitors from other IF authors' pages who have my games in their collections)

i'm honestly just waiting to see what happens next. i have the advantage of my work all being free; siren's call is the only one i accept tips for... so since i'm not selling anything, i think i'll be okay. though i had hoped to do so eventually.... and, obviously, i really do not like the vague language around the new guidelines. so... we'll see!

but i agree, i highly recommend everyone to follow their favorite authors and artists on itch.io and elsewhere. subscribe to newsletters, download their work, support them however you can!

Itch updated their Creator FAQ and now indicates the following

oh that's interesting! thank you for letting me know, when i checked yesterday all of my games were completely invisible. i didn't even realize i hadn't tagged that one adult. (funnily enough when discussing it with fellow authors the other day i even referred to that one as my most "YA adjacent" story hahaha so i'm glad it's visible again)
