saw your tags on the hotdish post, I have answers to your questions: brats are bratwurst, the sausage. Cream of cheese and cream of mushroom soup don't need to be measured, you just put it in a can of each. These soups are usually put out by Campbell's, and most people do not straight up eat them alone but use them as casserole additives. These casseroles/hotdishes usually come from Great Depression meal cooking when people had to make a lot with a little. Which is why I've always called it Depression Food because, literal. My grandma was from Iowa, I've eaten so many of these concoctions. I'm not entirely sure I'd recommend them to anyone who wasn't raised on them, though.
(Hotdish post)
Thank you for the insight! I have no issues with cream of mushroom soup, we have that in the UK, but the next day the idea of cheese soup by itself is still breaking my brain a little so I’m glad it’s often used as an ingredient!
I think the thing to me is, in the UK I very rarely encounter recipes that combine pre-made food, and I think I’d usually see an amount even if there was a whole pack of something as an ingredient. I think this is a cultural thing — along with us using weights for measurements predominantly as the US using cups — but I don’t know why it is. Perhaps companies in the US did a better job advertising their products by making recipes and it caught on? I don’t know but I feel like there’s some interesting comparative history to be studied there.
On that note it’s interesting that you connect the food with the Great Depression — that’s a connection I would never have made. But I think I might have some old family recipes that date back to rationing during WW2.
I think I would like to try it, for curiosity’s sake, even though I don’t think I’m about to go shopping for cream of cheddar soup which I think I can get from US food shops over here!

Some recipes from Stan Lee Presents: The Mighty Marvel Superheroes’ Cookbook (1977).
The Great Triple Decker Sandwich was a sandwich they included to tie into Mr Fantastic.  There’s another similar one in there that does the same.  It was a fine sandwich, but I think the extra slice of bread is unnecessary.  I think that was considered fancy back in the '70s. The cheese soup is a really classic example of a recipe from the cookbook.  Take a can, cook it as it says on the tin, add croutons.  Thanks, cookbook, I’d never have thought of that without you.  However, I can’t get cans of cheese soup here, so I made one from scratch.  I am sure it was better than the can would have been.

PSA: lentil soup is extra delicious with melted cheese swirled in.
Put the hot soup into a bowl, add small bits of a type of cheese that melts easily, wait a minute, then stir gently.
Eat.

In my last grocery deilvery I got a couple steamer bags of frozen broccoli "in cheese sauce". Upon preparation it developed that the "cheese sauce" was about a centimeter of yellow water in the bottom of the bowl.
I decided to try an experiment. I had a can of Campbell's condensed cheese broth handy*. I dumped that on the bowl of broccoli "in cheese sauce" and gave it another ninety seconds in the microwave.
Either that wasn't enough time to heat it enough for me to enjoy it, or it was intrinsically unenjoyable to me; or maybe I should have properly prepared the condensed soup according to the directions, but I didn't have any milk. I ate a few spoonfuls, then I made myself eat another spoonful or two, and then I chucked it out.
I also got a couple of cans of broccoli and cheese with potatoes Chunky Soup which are what I'll try the next time I want broccoli and cheese.
* I've been meaning to have that with oysters in it per my last discussion with @believerindaydreams about oysters which was ... a day some months ago when I appear not to have been being very fastidious about tagging my Tumblr entries. I still have the oysters though and the use-by date still isn't for many months, and I've added condensed cheese broth to my next grocery delivery order, so that may still happen.

Directions
1) peel your potatoes, cut them into small chunks and cook in the microwave for 6 minutes
2) in a blender add cream of mushroom, one cup broth, soft cheese and the potatoes blend until smooth
3) in a pot add 3 cups of broth and your herbs then add in the blended mixture
4) then slowly add in the Gouda, mixing as you go

Note
brat = bratwurst
Also, for the cheese soup, he probably means this one: https://www.campbells.com/products/condensed/cheddar-cheese-soup/
Thank you for the clarifications! Apparently I can get that soup from American food suppliers in the uk if I wish!
