There weren't many high quality fashion shops that Bella would venture into in the Alleys, so her options were always limited when she needed new robes. But she had always liked the quality and service she received from Gladrags so it had become her preference for any future purchases. Having made a quick stop by the shop after running to Gringotts for a despoit, she had just finished placing a future order for herself and something for her sisters when she was bumped into. Most of the clientele had seemed to be good enough but even as annoyed as she was to be interrupted, it was stictly bad manners to be rude to the owner's wife. "Claudette, go right ahead," She spoke, her hand gesturing ahead of her as though the path was now open for the blonde.

Sorting Hat Chats - The Malfoys

Since the Malfoys have been a bit of a hot topic lately, I decided to give them their sorting post similar to what I did with the Weasleys...3 years ago??? Where does the time go??

Anyway, this is an explanation of the system I am using by @wisteria-lodge.

LUCIUS MALFOY is blatantly a Badger secondary. His methods are to make donations to people, goad Arthur Weasley into a fight so he can slip Ginny the diary, he uses blackmail against the other members of the Board of Governors, calling in favors, and when in the hall of prophecies with Harry and his gang his strategy is to talk him into giving the prophecy over. It's what makes him so effective in the first five books, but is also why once everyone knows the truth about him he is in a constant state of free fall.

As for his primary, I think it's fairly obvious that he's a Snake. He can look like a Badger, dehumanizing muggleborns and joining the Death Eaters, but that's a performance. When the chips are down, what Lucius really cares about himself, his wife, and his son. Snake Lucius is willing to get rid of every association to the Death Eaters he had, and in the Second Wizarding War is not enjoying himself at ALL. He's also clearly got that Snake hedonism to him.

NARCISSA MALFOY née BLACK is an equally blatant Snake primary, although she doesn't appear to even play the part of a Badger. Everything to her is her son and her husband (and her husband takes a backseat to her son usually). Narcissa doesn't even appear to like Bellatrix all that much anymore since Bella is a threat to her family. Down to the end her motivation is always to keep Draco safe, damn the consequences.

As for her secondary, since she's such a minor character you can probably make an argument for any of them. But I personally think she's a Snake secondary, making her a Double Snake. This is a woman who lies to Voldemort's face and doesn't get caught. Who is willing to go behind his back and make back-alley deals with someone like Snape.

I've sorted DRACO MALFOY once before with @awinterrain which you can read right here, but I would like to reiterate it and expand on it.

Draco may be the epitome of Slytherin in the books, and he may hate Hufflepuffs and think of them as "duffers," but this boy is Double Badger down to his bones. This is a boy who cares deeply about communities. He defines himself by them, first as a Malfoy, then as a Slytherin, then as a Seeker on the quidditch team, then as part of the Inquisitorial Squad, then as a death eater (which he doesn't care for). I think at the beginning of the series he's a good case for an Immature Badger primary, where he just IS the group he's into and nothing outside of this.

His Badger primary can look very insular and Snake-like, partially because pureblood culture alienates everyone outside of it, and partially because his family is so Snakey that it colors the look of his Badger primary. Idk if I would even call it a performance or a model, it's more like a flavor.

But he does start to look like a Snake primary in his Sixth Year, where he's single-mindedly focused on saving his family. That's because in Sixth Year he burns after joining the Death Eaters. And it's honestly really sad, but it's because Draco has realized his communities are toxic and not good for him. The Death Eaters aren't good, they're the reason his father is in prison and his mother is in danger. This is the year where he really stops engaging with his peers and is sort of just coasting on his former reputation.

But that Badger shine is still there, and it's in the fact that Draco Malfoy has to kill Dumbledore and cannot do it. A true Snake Draco Malfoy would probably have gone through with it, even if it he felt bad about it. Badger Draco, who spent books 1-5 shit talking Dumbledore at any opportunity, cannot do it. I think it's because 1. He isn't ready for casual murder, and 2. I think Dumbledore for Draco represents one more community that he identifies with-Hogwarts. And clearly he does care about Hogwarts (I don't think the Room of Requirement would reveal itself to him if he did).

As for his secondary, Draco is his father in miniature. Draco is a tattle tail, he has bodyguards that follow him around, he usually goads Harry into confrontations so Harry gets into trouble and Draco can have plausible deniability. What's most interesting to me though is Draco's proclivity for elaborate smear campaigns. The "Potter Stinks" badges are HIS work as is the "Weasley is Our King" song, which is very...mean badgery. Like this is his community building with Slytherin (arguably all of Hogwarts with the badges), and using his powers to bully Harry. It's funny, despite everything. He does perform Snake though, to make everything look quicker or look like his mother.

Even his methods when he has to kill Dumbledore are Badger powered. Working on the Vanishing Cabinet all year, poisoning Professor Slughorn's mead he intended to give Dumbledore, and charming Rosmerta to imperious Katie Bell. But, he still has that influence from his mom where he can lie to someone's face (though not as convincingly).

I think Draco looks at his father's Badger performance, and thus thinks they house match. And it explains why he is so wary of his father after the Death Eater reveal, since Draco has realized he does not enjoy that sort of Badger primary.

As a bonus I decided to sort BELLATRIX LESTRANGE née BLACK as well. Since for some reason the movies always advertised her as part of the Malfoys. No doubt about it she is a Lion secondary. I don't think Bellatrix has every learned the meaning of the word subtle. She never lies in the series, just blasts the truth out whenever, and is always an attack first think never character.

As for her primary, can she be anything other than exploded snake primary? Her everything is Voldemort. She doesn't really care for anyone outside of him, with the exception of Narcissa, who stopped liking Bellatrix when she became a danger to her son. I think at one point she had a Badger performance or model that allowed her to willingly marry someone like Rodolphus who she doesn't appear to like, but by the time she's going to Azkaban she doesn't care. It's honestly such a Black Family sorting. Sirius was a Snake Lion as well, and the culture of the "Noble and Most Ancient House of Black" seems to just be Snake coded in general.

When Sirius first left his family behind for a better life he loved the holidays. He loved being away from his cold and dark home and getting to spend the time with people who actually loved him. The first Christmas after he left - a time he spent with the Potters - was a memory that still filled him with warmth if he thought about it for long enough. But as the years went on his feelings towards the holidays changed.

Before Sirius could tell how it had happened he had graduated Hogwarts and was suddenly out in the big bad world on his lonesome. And despite how welcome the Potters had always made him feel, he felt like more of an imposition the older he got. It was one thing to take in a child who had been abandoned by their family, but it was another thing altogether to encroach on them as a grown up. Ever since that feeling had started to creep in the holidays had felt less and less fun and more and more lonely.

Still, the New Year was rolling around, and by looking at him a passerby would think Sirius was as happy as anyone to be there. He had returned to the bar for another pint, waiting for the bar man to bring back his change when he felt someone come up beside him. Instinctively he glanced over, but another instinct had him looking away just as quick. He was just thanking the bar man for his change when she spoke and he turned towards his cousin with an easy smirk. "It has been, but I always knew my luck would run out eventually," he drawled.

Bellatrix's eyes roamed sharply, cutting through the Leaky Cauldron's dense crowd with the ease of a blade. She carried her usual expression of cold disgust, appalled by so much inferior blood swanning around her, yet also envigored by the chaos. She'd left the Selwyns' party, bored of its predictability. The Lestranges had planned to meet in Diagon Alley, bringing in the New Year with the masses. As repugnant as they were, she could not deny that the lower classes knew how to have a good time. So here she was, completely over-dressed and loving the effect that her rich attire ensured. The elegant picture was completely ruined by the large mug of beer gripped in her dainty fist. Raising it to her lips, she took a deep gulp and focussed her stare on Sirius Black. The fucking traitor.

Wiping her lips with the back of her fingers, she sauntered through the crowd, parting it with impatient flaps of her hand and not at all caring for the disgruntled objections that followed in her wake. She wanted to curse the idiot. But fortunately for her dear cousin, the Dark Lord had decided that he wanted to recruit James Potter. Bellatrix understood none of it. Potter was as much a disgusting dissenter as the rest of them, but she would never disagree with her master's desire. So as much as it sickened her, she would do what she could to make his wish come to fruition. That started with playing nice with Sirius - but not too nice. He was a Black, after all. He'd surely see through an extreme change of heart.

"Hello, Sirius." Cold and haughty, she contradicted her own tone with another hefty gulp of beer then slid the half-empty tankard onto the bar. She bloody well needed the drink for this conversation. "Long time no see."

i might be dipping my toe into some black sisters fics soon... very carefully. i am personally hindered in this fandom by the fact that i have been obsessed with the books since i was 6 years old and 6 year old carina had some very intense feelings about some of these characters. i never thought i could reconcile 6 yo carina's hatred for bellatrix, but at 20 years of age... i am increasingly fascinated

I have been tagged in various line and snippet games over the past couple of weeks, and I haven't done any of them, and it's not because I don't love you all! It's just that besides the last chapter of Dead Man Walking, I'm not really working on any fanfic, and that's a really strange feeling.

"Believe it or not, I can read," James quipped back to Bellatrix's remark, his eyes on the books rather than her. He scanned the shelf of potion book before him, taking one out and reading the back before he placed it back on the shelf. "I'm sure this is a regular haunt of yours though," he mused, picking up another. "You seem fitting of the.. clientele." He looked around at a few of the other costumers and then at her, tucking the book under his arm.

Running her fingers over the spines as she moved through the aisles of spell and potion books, there wasn't a specific book she was looking for but when Bella entered the shop she knew she was being followed as the bell above the door rang just seconds after she had disappeared into the shelves. Not knowing who had followed her in but knowing she had the advantage of being a regular here allowed her to find her way through the stacks before she could find herself behind her little follower. "Now what does a boy like you want with a shop like this?" The witch spoke up, leaning against the bookcase that housed various potion books as she faced James Potter.

Levitating in the air was a pair of ballroom shoes, high above the hoards of people. With only a few noticing their presence, those select few included Nancy, Bellatrix and the poor boy from eighth year who was in an unknown duel with Bellatrix Black. The young man’s wand was fighting a loosing battle against the older woman, and Nancy’s eyes narrowed as Bellatrix seemed to be chuckling to herself.

Typically Nancy was unwilling to cause any form of conflict or intervene in any bickering not to do with her. Somehow, Nancy found it difficult to walk away from this situation. Nancy walked past Bellatrix, intentionally bumping their shoulders together. Hopeful that it distracted the other woman from her enchantment. “Oh, I am sorry.” Her tone, a feigned surprised. “It’s just so busy. I didn’t seem to be looking where I was going.”

I watched the Sisters of House Black fan film three years ago and the last scene where Narcissa begs Bellatrix not to attack the Longbottoms and her music box starts playing music (it was a gift from Lucius and apparently "senses true love") hits harder as a nobleflower shipper now

“are you seriously saying you’d pick radiohead over deftones ?” mattheo asked with a shocked expression on his face, his hands clutched against his chest as if he was on the verge of a heart attack.

“i’m just saying radiohead is absolutely NOT overrated and you’re lying to yourself if you think that it is !” you replied, with your tone slightly more angry.

you were currently sitting on the floor of his dorm room, shuffling through his cd collection as he watched you from the bed. the two of you had been bantering for hours about music and everything else you disagreed on as the rain was pouring outside, leaving you in a cozy and comforting atmosphere.

“deftones is much more consistent,” the brunette boy continued, dead set on trying to knock some music taste into you “and white pony is better than all radiohead albums combined.” you gasped, looking up from the cd shelf

“you did not just say that ! what about the bends ? in rainbows ? ok computer ? you can’t say anything about ok computer ! ” you declared and he laughed from his spot against the headboard.

“nope, white motherfucking pony is a masterpiece.” he ignored your previous remarks before you cut him off “it’s good, but around the fur and saturday night wrist-“ you started before he shouted

“stop it ! i won’t hear a word of what you have to say. seriously, how can you be so wrong all the time ?”

“i am not !” the ridiculous argument you two were having was the last thing on your mind when you looked up and saw him nonchalantly leaning back against the headboard, his curls slightly bouncing when he shaked his head.

“yes you are ! you’re the only person i know who managed to have the same music taste as me in artists but not in songs and it’s irritating, i swear.” you scoffed at mattheo’s pissed of demeanor and didn’t bother answering him, leaving you in a comfortable silence for quite some time.

truth is, he couldn’t care less about your different opinions in music. he did, however, care about the way the two of you had been here for hours chatting about anything and everything in the most casual way possible. he’d never felt so good around someone before, and he couldn’t wrap his head around the fact that your simple presence was enough to make his head spin. you were siting cross legged on the floor, your hair perfectly framing your beautiful face as you looked through the cds, and he knew he’d give up listening to deftones for the rest of his life if it meant having you like this.
