@one-mad-squirrel Thank you for your memories of Maurice and the 1981 Brideshead. You might not have looked at my blog before you replied: almost my whole blog is devoted to Ivory’s and Forster’s Maurice, their histories/backstories/production/cast.

Of course, Brideshead was produced in the UK by Granada Television and premiered here in Autumn 1981 before it reached PBS in January 1982. The Brideshead team – director Charles Sturridge and legendary drama producer Derek Granger – later capitalised on the success of Maurice by reuniting James Wilby and Rupert Graves in their 1988 feature film of Waugh’s A Handful of Dust, this time in a het love-triangle with the then-unknown Kristin Scott Thomas. By 1992 Roman Polanski had cast Hugh Grant opposite Scott Thomas in the Europudding ‘erotic thriller’ Bitter Moon – not recommended unless you enjoy preposterous films.

Ivory’s Maurice is, for me, a very different animal from Brideshead because the endgame is what matters. It was made on 1/10th of Brideshead’s budget and was the first film to be permitted to shoot inside Cambridge college rooms (Brideshead is Oxford).

'Howard's End' author Edward Morgan Forster was born in London in 1879. He was a pacifist and served with the British Red Cross in Alexandria, Egypt during the First World War. His job was to interview the wounded in hospitals for information about fellow soldiers who were reported missing.

Although he never declared it in his lifetime, Edward was homosexual.  Whilst serving in Egypt he had a three-year relationship with a young Egyptian, Mohammed el Adl. Their relationship ended in 1918 when Mohammed was forced to marry. Mohammed paid tribute to his lover by naming his son Morgan. After his death in 1922, Mohammed's widow sent Forster her husband's gold ring as a keepsake. Edward, by now back in Britain, slept with the ring under his pillow every night. 

He continued to write novels and plays, and was nominated for 20 Nobel Prizes for Literature. Edward died in 1970.
