Elijah Fed by the Raven
Artist: Giovanni Girolamo Savoldo (Italian, c. 1480-1548 or after)
Date: c. 1510
Medium: Oil on panel transferred to canvas
Collection: National Gallery of Art, Washington, DC, United States
Description
This painting of Elijah Fed by the Raven is taken primarily from 1 Kings 17, but other moments are also superimposed. In the upper right-hand corner you can see a raven feeding Elijah, as commanded by God, during the drought God was imposing to demonstrate to the people that their false Baal worship would not bring them the bounty they desired. The huge black bird seems to have a chunk of bread or a roll in its beak for the prophet.
Opposite the raven, in the upper left of the painting, you can glimpse a scene from the end of the Elijah adventures: Elijah's translation to heaven in a chariot of fire with horses of fire (2 Kings 2). Elijah's blessing of perpetual presence with God is an early pointer to God's power and plan eventually to defeat the forces of death and Sheol that fight to separate us from God and the community of faith.

Actually I think one of my favorite tropes as a whole is "small cast of characters trapped in very isolated, very small setting during a horrific/dangerous/impossible scenario" its just that the stakes are much higher when they're in space
#I'm talking like.. cloverfield paradox is the one ive seen most recently#10 cloverfield lane did it too though lmao#Blood Red Sky#wolf 359...#a lot of my favorite Doctor Who episodes (Midnight & the Impossible Planet & 42 & Father's Day)#when i was like 13 I went through a phase of being REALLY into this kind of survival movie but at the same time i was SUPER put off by#horror#so i watched a lot of like. weird isolated survival movies i found on a pirating website that toed the line by being more#grounded??#i very specifically remember frozen (2010) and chariot (2013)

Random thought of the day: modern day Ralph Lanyon would really enjoy Amyr and Tamara Klink’s books (and in Tamara’s case, her Instagram would make him buy a sailboat and winter out there in the Artic as she’s doing now)
#I mean.#tamara made me want to go off to the artic and live in complete isolation#not sure if her books are translated to English yet but her father’s surely is#(I need to read#100 Days Between Sea and Sky and I guess it’s a book I would enjoy but more nowadays than when I was 16#like all quiet on the western front#ANYWAY#random thoughts#the charioteer#????

you think that since Solaris is a sun god and god of time, their job is to make sure the sun rises and sets everyday? or do they share that role with Chip
I'd say it's a joint effort. Chip, being daytime (and the Earth cough cough), welcomes the sun and guides it across the sky; Solaris, being time, controls and measures the planetary cycles, with the sun being the king of our solar system.
#ask#YEEHAW SONIC GOD LORE!!!#I learned recently about how time is weird and how the gravitational pull of stuff affects how it moves#and how even a slight difference in elevation can make two clocks get out of sync#I'm too sleepy to get into all of that now but 1000% the planets have to do with time both on the quantum level and how we perceive it#something something the sun time gravity foundational forces of the universe and the human inability to comprehend it. it's all connected#a foundational part of religion is that it can often only be reconciled with nature so far and so I think it's fair to say that they BOTH#control the sun and it's a matter of perspective. In the grander scheme of things it's Solaris' job but from the vantage of Earth it's#the duty of Light Gaia to oversee the day#I think of it along percy jackson rules. wherein planetary movements are real AND Apollo drives his chariot across the sky#ASSOM lore (not that this necessarily references that but it's on my mind now) established that the gods gain power through belief#and there are many layers of things happening at once. again it's a concept incomprehensible to us mortals#but who's to say?#hopefully this makes even a tiny bit of sense. goodnight

The Chasm combat music plays... during Guizhong's death scene in her trailer.
I'm losing my mind, it's fine. Worst thing is, I have semi-logical thoughts, but this just adds to them in a logical but also illogical way.
#[ mini study. ] she always sought to make everyone happy and one must say: she had quite the gift for it.#[ /breathes 4.0. ]#[ i literally talked about dust a few hours ago. and what is formed from dust. ]#[ and stardust and cosmic dust. i mean the girl has the galaxy in her sleeves. wait don't abandon me yet-- ]#[ this'll be really incoherent but bear with me. i need to get this out of my head and down on 'paper' so i can process... ]#[ what's formed of dust matter? meteorites/meteors. ]#[ ... the legend of the chasm literally speaks of having been created after the impact of a fallen star. ]#[ a fallen star is considered a meteor/meteorite. ]#[ the moon is arguably a star? ]#[ and thEN THIS METEORITE IS SAID TO HAVE leaped back to the heavens because of all the constant strife during the /archon war/. ]#[ and she has so many. /so many/ motifs linked to the moon. from her colour scheme. to being tied to items that bloom or glow at night. ]#[ to the colour scheme of her attire. to her temperament and how that ties into the feminine aspects of the moon in chinese mythology. ]#[ to the /galaxies in her damn sleeves/. ]#[ something no other character has except paimon and dain. literally the most suspicious characters. ]#[ i'm losing my mind. ]#[ don't mind me quoting the wiki of the chasm for a second... ]#[ and then there's a correlation between the fallen star 6000 yeaRS AGO and a 'fallen solar chariot' which fell... ]#[ during the cataclysm. ]#[ which then also returned to the sky?? ]#[ i'm losing my mind. hold on. ]#[ the fantastic compass-- locking things away that can't be beaten. wisdom-- locked away. dumbbell... ]#[ i'm that guy who's trying to connect the dots on this brainstorming board. ]#[ /massive deep breathing 5.0?? ]

One of my all time biggest pet peeves with historical(ish) fantasy is when the writer constructs a religion with a clear bias that it's stupid and false and therefore only the Stupid People and/or commoners believe in it and all the smart/elite main characters are like, quasi-atheists or otherwise just routinely flout established religious conventions of orthodoxy and/or orthopraxy because they're Too Smart for it or etc.
It's usually an extension of assumptions that people in the past were just less intelligent than in the contemporary, just being like "I know that the sun is a star millions of miles away that the earth orbits, but this ancient religion describes it as a chariot flying through the sky" and not really bothering to learn the context and just (consciously or subconsciously) settling on 'that's a crazy thing to think and was probably believed in because they were Stupid'.
And that whole attitude pisses me off so much. People were as 'smart' 10,000 years ago as they are today. These beliefs aren't just desperate, random flailing to explain phenomena that could not directly be accounted for either, it's not like people just looked at the sun and went "Uhhh I don't know what the fuck that thing is, actually. I guess it might be a chariot or a boat or something?? Yeah let's go with that." and based entire religious practices on this. Every well-established belief system exists within broader contexts of cultural values/subjective perceptions of reality/knowledge systems/etc, and exist as part of a historical continuum of religious practices that came before. Even when not Materially Correct, they have context and internal logic, they're not always dead literal with zero levels of allegory, and they're never a result of stupidity.
#I think you're failing at good worldbuilding and also just like. Idk failing at being an understanding human being willing to learn about#people different from yourself when you approach writing religion from a 'uhhhh what's some random stupid shit people believed in#2000 years ago' angle#Like make an effort to understand the logic and worldviews and value systems that informed these practices before you synthesize your own

90% of doomscrollers always stop just one post before the clouds of uncertainty part and the shining bridge to the future manifests itself. the chariots, clad in shimmering gold, glide across the sky. Golden flecks of sunlight kiss the doomscrollers pallid cheeks, retuning them to a rosy hue of healthiness and mirth. Apollo stretches his hand out to them. the pain is gone, the winter has passed. spring is carried on the backs of rabbits and in the fur of honeybees. the nightmare is over
