Some time ago, I reblogged a post about Pride and Prejudice, which pointed out that even when Elizabeth thinks the worst of Darcy she never assumes he's a sexual threat to women (nor does anyone else). That post reminded me of an underrated aspect of Disney's Beauty and the Beast. Appropriately, since Disney's Beauty and the Beast is so often compared to Pride and Prejudice.

Even when the Beast's behavior is most beastly, he's never sexist to Belle and never seems like a sexual threat to her.

Now, maybe the latter goes without saying because it's a children's movie, and some people will disagree with me about both. Once or twice online, I have seen people call the Beast's controlling behavior "sexist," and I do remember once reading an article – one that was very critical of the movie – which argued that the Beast's pounding on Belle's bedroom door and threatening to break it down evokes the image of a would-be rapist. But personally? Until I read that article, it never once occurred to me to think of the scene that way. He's not even trying to get into the bedroom, he wants Belle to come out and join him for dinner.

When the Beast tries to order Belle around and loses his temper when she defies him, it's not because she's a woman. It's because he's a spoiled prince who sees her as his underling. It's a matter of status, IMHO, not gender. He would have treated her in just the same way if she were a man. Or maybe worse, since he wouldn't have the motive of "she could fall in love with me and break the spell" to make even an effort to be nice. The way he treats Maurice shows that.

And while he does try to force Belle to join him for dinner, the idea of trying to force her into a romantic relationship never seems to cross his mind. He always wants to woo her and win her genuine love – and rightfully so, since nothing else would break the spell.

Gaston is the sexist one. Gaston is the one who says "It's not right for a woman to read" and who envisions Belle as just a little housewife who will massage his feet and give birth to sons for him. Gaston is the one who tries to blackmail Belle into marrying him, and who declares "Belle is mine" while attacking the Beast, even though Belle has made it clear that she hates him.

This is one of the main reasons why I don't buy it when people say "The Beast and Gaston are the same character, the Beast just changes while Gaston doesn't." I could make a list of reasons why that claim isn't true, but this particular difference would be at the top of the list.
