Shen Yuan getting transported into pidw isn't "the system punishing him for being a lazy internet hater," but instead representative of "step 1 of the creative process: getting so mad at something you decide to go write your own fucking book" in this essay I will
#svsss#scum villian self saving system#shen qingqiu#shen yuan#the fact that people think scum villain#-a series that examines and criticizes common tropes in fiction-#is somehow against criticism or being a little hater is wild to me#especially since shen qingqiu never gets punished for being a hater#heck- he's still a little hater by the end of the series#he mostly gets punished for treating life like a play and like he and the people around him are characters#(or in other words- he suffers for denying his own wants and emotions and his own sense of empathy)#I think some of y'all underestimate how much writing/art is inspired by creaters being little haters#like example off the top of my head-#the author of Iron Widow has been pretty vocal about the book being inspired by their hatred of Darling in the Franxx#I think my interpretation of Shen Yuan's transmigration is also supported by the fact that this series is an examines writing processes#side note- though i understand why people say Shen Yuan is lazy and think its a valid take it still doesnt sit right with me#i am probably biased because my own experiences with chronic pain and depression and isolation#but ya- i dont think Shen Yuan is lazy so much as he is deeply lonely and feels purposeless after denying parts of himself for 20ish years#like yall remember the online fandom boom from covid right?#being stuck completely alone in bed while feeling like shit for 20 days straight does shit to your brain#the fact that no one came to check on him + he wasn't exactly upset about leaving anyone behind supports the isolation interpretation too#+in the skinner demon arc he describes his life of being a faker/inability to stop being a faker now that he's Shen Qingqiu#as “so bland he's tempted to throw salt on himself” and “all he could do is lay around and wait for death” (<-paraphrasing)#bro wants to be doing stuff but is stuck in paralysis from repeatedly following scrips made by other people#another point on “Shen Yuan isn’t lazy” is just the sheer amount of studying that man does#also he did graduate college- how lazy can he really be#he doesnt know what hes doing but he at least tries to actively train his students#and he actually works on improving his own cultivation + spends quite a bit of time preping the mushroom body thing#+he's experiencing bouts of debilitating chronic pain throughout all this#but ya tldr: Shen Yuan's transmigration is an encouragement to write and not a punishment and also i dont think its fair to call him lazy

Hello, I'm not really sure how to word this but figured there are tropes to be avoided in the concept so yeah. Have you ever dealt with magic characters who have problems dealing with like, the opposite of a normal disability? Like instead of being blind, someone sees too much? Or instead of amputation, limbs keep growing?
Hello,
Actually, yes, I've seen this kind of idea twice in media;
Deadpool's cancer and healing factor. His body is constantly dealing with an aggressive and widespread form of cancer and his healing factor is constantly repairing the damage. This causes him to have chronic pain. If either thing were to vanish, he would die. If the healing factor vanishes, the cancer will kill him. If his cancer were to vanish after his healing factor has spent decades working overtime to repair the damage, his healing factor would keep working overtime and the unnecessary tissue regeneration would probably kill him.
Sarah Bright from the SCP universe. She's never stopped growing and this has caused her limbs to get too long, making her bones and muscles weak. She needs braces and mobility aids to get around because of this and deals with chronic pain. (I have issues with how Sarah and her brother, TJ, were written as characters with intellectual disability, but I digress.)
I'm also almost certain I've seen characters with enhanced senses deal with sensory overload due to said enhanced senses, but I can't remember any specific examples of this besides the ones I've written.
I think ideas like this are super cool and an interesting spin on how superhuman abilities can impact the physiology of the people who have them. And when these consequences are grounded in science, like the weakness and pain caused by Sarah continuing to grow long after she should have stopped, it's very interesting to me as a scientist. These ideas are really cool and a great way to explore "maybe superpowers aren't always so super" without the usual "too much uncontrollable power" trope. When done well, these are a fantastic way to remind readers that having superpowers isn't always a good or fun thing, sometimes they're irritating, painful, uncontrolled, or even disabling.

Don't mind me I'm just crying because I'm reading a fantasy novel with a main character that is an ambulatory wheelchair user (who also uses a prosthetic leg) with chronic pain. This is the first time I've read something like this outside of my own stories.
"In truth, Kissen's leg still ached, it always ached, but it was better than when they arrived. The wheelchair was a blessing. She wasn't used to it and kept wanting to jump up. But it was a relief to be able to rest her hips."

I feel like Arthur Lester deals with the pain from his injuries and such a lot better than most people would, and that got me thinking
on this weeks episode of your favorite character is disabled! Arthur Lester has a chronic pain disorder. even before everything he was in constant pain so the new injuries of course aren’t as detrimental to him as they may be to others. hes used to being in pain. as someone with a chronic pain disorder, that constant pain can in fact make you less sensitive to outside pain because you’re used to it
and thus! Arthur Lester also has chronic pain!!

Because I'm having a bad fucking chronic pain day, and feeling some type of way about it, I'm gonna rant more about Ashton.
Can we talk about how Ashton talks about their pain? Or rather, how he doesn't?
I think Ashton's actually mentioned actively being in pain, like... 3 times in the 86 episodes they've filmed so far? The first time that I can remember is during/immediately after Imogen and FCG delved into their mind and actually experienced what it's like to live in their body.
The second time was in the second episode of the Issylra arc, when the group is packing up to move towards Hearthdell, and Ashton mentions off-hand that he was in pain the night before.
And then the third time was e86. When Ashton collapses after dropping his Titan form, and Orym asks if they're okay, Ashton’s response is along the lines of "I'm fine, it just hurts."
You know what Ashton says a lot more often?
I'm so tired. I'm exhausted. We should really take a rest first. Can we please take a fucking rest now?
It seems subtle at first, but as someone who has chronic pain it hits hard. 'Cause most of the time that's exactly what I say.
Because when you're in pain all the time, the healthy/abled/non-chronic-pain-havers around you don't want to hear about it. It makes them uncomfortable.
Being in constant pain and giving voice to it makes you a whiner. A complainer. A wuss. A flake.
Have you tried yoga? Or drinking more water? Or the current fad diet?
So instead, you learn to allude to it in ways that won’t make the ableds uncomfortable. For me, a lot of the time, that takes the form of:
"I'm just really tired."
So, seeing Ashton pushing themself well past their limits to keep up with their friends and doing what the other Hells want - only to end up completely nerfing themself with 2 points of exhaustion... hits very close to home. Especially seeing most of their friends completely disregard their pain until they couldn't anymore.
Orym is really the only one who consistently shows any consideration for their chronic pain - and the boundaries and limitations that go with it. I only had a handful of friends like that when I was younger, and I treasured every single one of them.
As the kid who always got left behind to walk with a chaperone on field trips because I couldn't keep up with the other kids... it brings back a lot of that frustration and hurt to see it playing out like this for Ashton, but also validates it in a way I'm profoundly grateful for.
Anyway. That's all I have to say about that at the moment. I'll climb down off my soapbox now.
(Really slowly though, 'cause my knees are fucking killing me.)
