A/N Hey guys!!! None of my real fics are ready yet but I felt like posting something! So I'm tapping into the mind of my 3rd favorite capcom blonde white boy because he also deserves some love. Again, none of these are romantic but idk if I feel like it or literally anyone asks I'll write them. This is like super unserious like the last one!

He is one huge corn ball, like he must've been injected with corn syrup in shadaloo's lab or something.

It's not that he's unfunny but he's so dry, if you do manage to get to a point with him where he isn't yelling at you all the time and he's telling jokes, they’re more often than not, technically horrible.

I mean it's not really his fault, being a test tube baby and all... though I'm probably biased cause I think he's cute but he's charming enough to make it work.

Don't call him a test tube baby though, that shit pisses him off.

Many things piss him off, here's a short list of that:

AJR, Dance Monkey, tangled headphones, Michael Cera, price stickers that don't rip off completely, dirty finger nails, twitter, overly cheerful people (Luke), long sleeved shirts that cut off below the wrist, waiting rooms, sherpa jackets, Mr. Beast, Love Island, Big Phrama.

WWE is his guilty pleasure, he doesn't keep up with every installment of RAW/Smackdown but when he gets the time. Watched it a lot more when travelling with Balrog.

Doesn't miss any pay-per-view events though, his favorite would either be hell in a cell or royal rumble.

He’ll never admit it though. He’ll be all like “Ugh no, why would I be into that crap? It’s not even real.” Then his ringtone is the hardy boys entrance theme.

His favorite wrestler is Jeff Hardy.

Not a self-conscious guy, I mean look at him he wears a big ass chain and no shirt, but easy to fluster.

Gets defensive about not wearing a shirt. Avatar could be like "Why aren't you wearing a shirt?" He'll then squint at you and say "Why... Aren't you minding your damn business?"

"They all look the same to me, just either fatter, a different hat, or a different color. I don't know why people are into this stuff... I mean look at that one! He's not even cute." He yells, pointing at Hangyodon. "Don’t say that about him! Hangyodon is like a pug, the so ugly it's cute kinda thing." You explain, clutching your phone closer, as if to protect the fish. "Look, if you had to choose one, who would it be?" You sigh, defeat present.

"Hmmmm, if I had too... Probably the stupid fish one, since he's the same color as my jacket... But that's if I had to choose." He reiterates, his point clear. "OH MY GOD finally, thank you! I gotta bounce but I'll see you soon!" You say, running for the next train.

"Ed! Guess what I got for you!" You shout when you exit the train, beaming with excitement. "Knowing you it's either more problems or trading cards..." He sighs, still looking at his phone.

"Nope! Today's special, I got you something completely different! Here," You practically shove the small gift bag in his hand. He eyes it suspiciously, look at you then back at the bag. Slowly, he undoes the ribbon keeping it together, revealing a phone charm with Hangyodon holding his little hand out.

"The stupid little fish guy? Why'd you give me this?" He asks, his voice softer but still confused. You bring out your phone to reveal a matching one. "Well they were on sale and I really wanted to get some but I didn't know who you liked. Look!" You take the charm out his hand and bring the keychains close. Instantly, their hands snap together, revealing a small magnet inside.

"Isn't it so cute!?" You ask, hoping he wouldn't tell you he hated it to your face. "It is but, why me? Don't you have other friends to give this to?" He asks, still examining the little guy. You pause, wondering how much truth you wanna tell him.

"Well I'm going out of the country for a bit and just wanted to give you a thank you gift, you know, just incase by the time I get back you're not here. And well," 'Geez this is cheesey, I GOT to kill myself if he hates it.' You think to yourself. Ed stares at you with this skeptical look, he's either gonna beat you up or stop talking to you. You don't know which one is worse.

"...You're my friend..." You guys just stare at each other. 'Oh yeah I'm ending it, bless there's no railings here-' Before you could make a break for it, you watch him thread the charm through his case. This silence, gently interrupted by the bustling life of the station, is one of understanding. So lost in thought you don't notice him bring his phone close to yours, snapping the colorful metal together.

"Thank you, it's great. Don't think I'll go any easier on you when we spar because of this though." (ugh is this ooc guys?)

He's actually really good at giving advice. Not like, on purpose, but he has a few wise words in him.

While reading the lyrics to his theme, the singer says something about selling mixtapes. Now, I don't think Ed is in the studio or anything, but maybe Balrog had a rough music career as any sellout celebrity does and made Ed sell them on the street.

Or alternatively, which would be more likely, some random hired him to do that during one of his odd jobs.

There’s a difference between what’s listed from the English and Japanese versions. English did not mention Bison as Commander of Shadaloo, whereas the Japanese account did. I wonder if the English account purposefully switched the Shadaloo Commander part with the Pearly Whites so that they could avoid outrage from Western audiences? Like, I see a lot of complaints about Bison’s SF6 inclusion from the West whereas the audience from Japan tend to be nonchalant about it. But also, people from Japan seem to be fine and okay-ish when it comes to the constant avatar gear stuff, which is quite the opposite from everywhere else lol. But to be fair, people wanted Bison to have a new purpose and not the same old tired one, and they have every right to voice their concerns. I want Bison to be different in this game than from the other installments.

But if Bison were to become the Shadaloo leader again in SF6, I personally don’t think it would undermine JP as the main antagonist. For me, the way Bison is in his unstable state as shown with his arm in his low health win pose, it’s gonna take him a long while to get back to normal.

According to Nakayama and Matsumoto, Bison might have a nuanced morality in his character in SF6. Like sure, he’s still evil, but not completely. That would be interesting to see. And it makes sense. If he’s completely evil, then how would the avatar become his disciple? It’s the same with other villains and characters with questionable morals like JP, Juri, A.K.I., and Akuma. They gotta have a little bit of a heart in them lol.

And also from the interview, JP will still be the main antagonist of SF6. He is still the mastermind of sinister plans…even if he failed at getting Ed lol. Tbf, he’s a bad guy. Bad guys don’t win no matter how badass they are. And plus, we still don’t know what he did to Falke because the last time we heard about her, she was investigating him. Also, a lot of characters’ arcade rival/boss tend to be JP, and it would probably continue that way if subsequent DLC characters have a Shadaloo-esque story. He’s the main villain doing a lot of things, and…he’s a base roster character. I have yet to see any dlc characters as arcade rivals or bosses, so we’re probably not gonna see Bison as an arcade boss at all. Thus, JP is still the big baddie of SF6.

Those are my thoughts. Looking forward to Bison and to see where to lore goes from there. Hopefully more F.A.N.G World Tour content comes with it too.

Pulptober 2024 Day 7: The Phantom/Beyond Their Homeland

This one's for characters who were created in one country, but are primarily associated with another.

The Phantom was created in America, a proto-superhero, but hailing from the fictitious country of Bangalla, originally somewhere near India. For reasons, it was subsequently established to be somewhere in Central Africa.

HIs concept has become...uncomfortable...over the decades. A white dude who pretends to be immortal by passing a nearly identical costume on to his children to fool the superstitious natives, who worship him like a god? Ow. This is why most treatments of the character just avoid ever talking about that issue.

I've reviewed a couple of things with him in it, including a collected volume of the early comic strip.

The strip is still running, by the way.

And then there's this Dynamite Comics miniseries where the current heir to the Phantom legacy retired and married a native woman, only to have tragedy strike.

The abyss

Moviezine meets director Richard Holm in the editing room: "It's incredible that we get to do something like this"

It's cockily called Sweden's first real disaster movie. This autumn we'll get to see if the budget of 90 million kr and an ambitious vision from an experienced action movie director can shake up the Swedish movie industry and the audience.

Moviezine visited SF studios where director Richard Holm is in the middle of the editing process of the special effects heavy movie "The Abyss". He explains how he got the idea for the movie. "SF called me and asked "can't we make a disaster movie" so I said "well, we have Kiruna! They are moving the whole city because it's too close to the mine. So the pitch became "what if you don't movie it before the mine collapses?"

A clear concept that has true elements triggered my fantasy, Holm says.

There are collapses every once in a while. There are over a hundred small earthquakes of at least 2,5 on the Ritcher scale. And all you need as a creator is a what if. What if one of these quakes eould uncover an unknown fault under the city.

In addition the playfield is fun since you are moving a whole city. Not alot of people know that. So you are presenting a background story like with "the wave"

The Norwegian disaster movies the wave, the quake and the tunnel has undoubtedly inspired the abyss.

The first clip we are allowed to watch points towards an ambitious Scandinavian movie.

The audience will perhaps be more used to see the white House blow up or the streets of New York get destroyed but for the first time the disaster genre has reached a swedish town.

Family drama in the center

Richard Holm explains that he wrote the script with his oldest son Robin which made the experience even more special and personal. He also talks about the big budget of 90 million. "So we are not just tearing down a light post and that's it"

Who does Tuva Novotny play?

When we began our resarch we quickly came across the mountain mechanics, reaponsible for the security in the mine. We read about female mechanics working in the mine and that inspired the character Frigga.

Frigga lives in Kiruna and has worked in the mine her whole life. She lost her dad in a mining accident where an explosion went wrong. It has made her determined to never let it happen again. She's merciless about the security. She's also married to the manager of the mine, Tage (Peter Franzen) and they have different interests. He doesn't want her to close the mine. He wants to keep production running.

Currently Frigga and Tage are in the middle of a divorce and she has found a new man. In the beginning of the movie Dabir (Kardo Razzazi) shows up and we learn that she has not yet signed the papers for the divorce like she promised. The hopes are that the family drama will be just as heartfelt as the disaster.

Just like with the movie "Titanic" we wanted to find a drama that is stronger than the disaster. So that you care for he characters when everything goes down.

Frigga and Tage also have two children, Simon and Mika who are tired of their parents. In the beginning of the movie they are about to celebrate Simon’s birthday but he is missing. Noone knows where he is. But Frigga and Tage have to leave for the mine where there's been an alarm set off.

They find the fualt but everything collapses and they can't warn anyone about what's going to happen. That's the beginning of the story.

You've made movies like Johan Falk that are very popular. Yet there has not been many swedish action movies after that. Why do you think that is?

because there's no budged not experience. But thanks to the technology we will see more and more of that in Sweden. Norway hss done several. And we also need to find stories that are rooted in our own culture. We are not making a Hollywood movie in Hollywood manner.

What is fun is that we have manged to keep it somewhat realistic. You want to feel "could this happen" it feels nerve-racking.

I think it is the reason why we are making this movie. We found a local story that won't feel fake.

And I need to ask about the title. You realise that James Cameron already made a movie with that name?

Haha, but it's one of his leadt famous movies. I don't even think it's on blu-ray. But of course we knew. There were some alternatives but the abyss is a very fitting name. I liked Cameron's but I think mostly older people have seen that movie.

Ok first off, I LOVE THEMST!! And second off, how did you decide on character names for the beans from Crime City? And if multiple questions are allowed, what would you say each character's motif would be?

THANK YOU FOR LOVING THEM AAAAHHHH!!! I wish I had a better answer to give too, but as I created crime city and all its characters when I was 16, I pretty much just chose the coolest names I could find that suited their personalities ^o^;

oooh the motifs question is really difficult but super interesting! I hope I get this one right...

winter's motifs are the ravens who inspired his criminal title, intelligent and crafty, who never forget and never forgive. red begonias, decaying flowers, and the color black.

brendoline's are white cats, pearls, gold jewelry, pink, and high-collared restrictive clothes.

giovanni's are constantly shuffling playing cards, the joker, empty beds at dawn.

ashcroft's are empty glasses of bourbon, rain-soaked alleyways, haunting music in the night.

falk's are scissors, impeccably precise watches, everything polished until they shine, even if he can't see them anymore.

A particularly infamous "superhero" comic that tries to be a social justice comic tackling racism and sexism while apparently unintentionally doing both those thing somehow? It's either that or intentionally being bad to prove it's point, but it doesnt have the self awareness to do it right? Apparently tries to have a protagonist and antagonist story run side by side too? You know it's bad when I see character names and I can't tell if it's being hyperbolic or if that's literally what the characters are called...

Magic teens in a future apocalyptic setting have magic jewelry to protect them as they live in a city that doesn't want them to have their jewelry for some reason? Things for the comics lore and worldbuilding just are half explained haphazardly as it goes on...

-My Alien Girlfriend (doesn't know I'm an alien)

Another webtoon comic. Comedy romance about two dating aliens in obvious disguise. Drawn rather poorly, lots of fanservice without going all the way to being porn, and very poor humor... literally the girlfriend looks like a clown character from another, and I believe actual porn, comic the author had a hand in.

Sort of a hybrid magical girl/superhero thing. A boy is given a little box that turns him into a ninja looking hero to fight monsters. Haven't read too much, but the art style is interesting looking at least.

- Bittersweet Candy Bowl by Veronica "taeshi" Vera

A furry teen drama comic about an angsty Mary Sue white cat named Lucy and love triangles upon triangles upon etc. So odd, cause some characters are fully dressed and some aren't, Lucy has like two bird pets, but they can talk? And oh so many perfect reaction images from the cat blobs.

- Black Jade by Steele Snover

Lesbian mad scientist villain makes a raygun that turns other women gay as well. She literally gets a girlfriend and from that point onward the comic has no idea what it wants to do with itself. The author notoriously asked for $1600 a month to keep this comic going I believe.

-Don't know if youd do written fanfic riffing at all, but One Piece: This Bites by Xomniac might be worth tearing into if you ever get around to doing that. It's basically a self insert fic involving a fan of One Piece who abuses his knowledge of the series like mad after a literal RNG God decides to matoon him in that world. It kinda tries to ground the anime in reality and to be more "hard core" by mauling the main character and torturing villains and such.

-...lets be honest here ANYTHING by Dave Cheung

Just. Wow. Dave Cheungs list of wretchedness is something frankly unbelievable from what I've heard there's sexism, snuff and a lack of holding back all wrapped up in a generic non-anime style... US Angel Core is the absolute worst in particular as it is just...disturbed, like seriously bottom of the barrel disgustingness as it kills characters and subjects them to heaps of abuse to the point i dont even reccomend you look into it, its that fucking disgusting. Literally anything else, this one isn't so much a recc as it is a warning...

Ah, Cheung's work we're familiar with. U.S. Angel Corps is on the rifflist and I am very wary of riffing it, but I say Cheung deserves to be brutally riffed.

On Der Himmel Über Berlin - Wim Wenders 1987

Der Himmel Über Berlin (The Sky Over Berlin), commonly known as Wings Of Desire, was the first film I saw at the BFI. A film classic directed by Wim Wenders that premiered at the Cannes Film Festival on May 17th 1987, the film was restored in 4K and was rereleased at the BFI on June 24th 2022. Usually, when writing a review or analysis, I will add a summary of the content; but I would rather you see this for yourself, should you choose to do so. I will, however, tell you that the film follows two angels (Damiel and Cassiel) through the streets and skies of Berlin as they observe its inhabitants and their thoughts. While it is a romance, I think it focuses more on the ability to love than the actual romance between the characters (Damiel and Marion, the trapeze artist). Whilst Der Himmel Über Berlin isn’t a Lynchian level of absurd, and its camerawork doesn’t have the same close-ups as David Lynch’s work, I found that the detail in the sound of this film was equivalent or at least comparable to Lynch’s visuals. Having the ability to hear a person's thoughts brings an entirely different level of intimacy between character and viewer that I am yet to find elsewhere, to the extent that it felt almost intrusive to be watching and listening in on such private matters.

The forbidden love between Damiel and Marion is greater than that of Shakespeare’s classic Romeo and Juliet, perhaps because Damiel isn’t grooming a 13-year-old girl into marrying him after only knowing her for a few days. Instead, he becomes enamoured with and practically stalks an unknowing grown woman and decides to change the trajectory of his entire existence just for the possibility of her loving him back. I particularly enjoyed the scene in which Damiel lay on top of Marion while she slept and visited her in her dream while dressed in armour. Keep in mind that all of this takes place in a world where invisible angels exist among people, giving hope to those in distress who cannot physically interact with them, can only see in black and white and can only be seen by children. So maybe it is pretty absurd after all.

All jokes aside, I left the BFI after watching Der Himmel Über Berlin with a greater appreciation for the things in life that are so often and easily overlooked. In one particular scene, Peter Falk speaks to Damiel (despite not being able to see him, claiming he can “feel” Damiel there) about the small things he appreciates in life. “To smoke, to have coffee and if you do it together, it's fantastic…to draw…or when your hands are cold, and you rub them together.” While it confuses any bystanders, as Falk seemingly talks to nobody, I can see why Damiel decided to exchange his immortality for the human experience. After all, he as an entity had existed long before humanity, he watched its entire development, yet he had never lived.

While I was expecting the film's poetic and ethereal ambience, I was not expecting it to be funny. Furthermore, I think the use of this humour amid the whispers and pensive scenes was done very tastefully. You don't see a frustrated Peter Falk trying on copious amounts of hats until he finally finds one that he likes straight after you see a man jump off a high rise. You do, however, see Falk repeating the speech that he made Damiel word for word and shaking hands with thin air, thinking he was talking to an angel. Another thing that I was entirely not expecting was the presence of Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds in the film. At first, I was excited to see The Boatman's Call vinyl used in a scene and hear The Carny and From Her To Eternity in the film's original soundtrack. Still, the band made a cameo appearance, performing a gig at which Damiel and Marion speak for the first time. I cannot deny that this made my face lit up with joy. In fact, my favourite part of the film was when we hear Nick thinking to himself, "One more song, then it's over, and I'm not gonna tell you about a girl,” just seconds before leaning forward to his microphone and proceeding to say “I’m gonna tell you about a girl.”

Really what I took away from this film was an appreciation for the beauty of life itself and the human experience as a whole and a deeper understanding of how little we know about the happenings of other people’s lives. While I do have more to say about this film, I fear I would either be repeating myself, or this would just become a list of things that I found funny with no real input on my part. Something that you have to have seen the film to understand, so for now, I think this is sufficient.

Craving: A new job. I'm not really happy in the company I work at as many people are way too arrogant for my liking. Also I feel that I don't make anyone happy with the work I do which is - I realized - one of the things that usuall, motivates me for a job. I'm looking for a job in the cultural area at the moment.

Piercings: I had ear rings but don't wear them anymore.

Current obsession: It's hard to motivate myself for anything at the moment, but I have fun playing "Dreamlight Valley" currently.

Unrelated obsession: papadum bread XD I found some that you can microwave to get crispy at an asian supermarket and love that stuff!

Any pets: Not in Munich, but my parents have a very sweet 11 year old boy who wakes me up when I sleep there.

Do you have a crush on anyone: Young Mirsolav Nemec 😆 And basically any baritone/bass singer I hear.

Favourite fictional character: Too many to name them all. As a kid it definitly was Benjamin Blümchen. Now of course my "Tatort München" blorbos, Zagreb from "München 7", Aramis from "The Three Musketeers", Scotty and Paul Stamets from "Star Trek", Lupin from "Harry Potter"...

The last place you traveled: A small day trip to Augsburg, visiting the museum of the famous puppet theatre and the city.
