Tursanay, my one armed girl, knows sign language!! She worked really hard to learn everything she could about it once she found out that a friend of hers was partially deaf. (She’d stared learning the basics with her grandmother, the linguist, but didn’t fully get into it until later after her grandmother passed and she ended up at the boarding school where the story starts.)

When she learns sign to make Rodney (her new friend) feel welcome, it comes in handy later when his hearing aid is destroyed by crossing over the Veil between the magic world and the non magic world, and she has to translate for him. They end up getting a magical crystals that enable his hearing (by charging in the sunlight) that are later destroyed/cracked by a blast and have to be replaced, and the sign becomes relevant again.

It’s actually a running language throughout the book, so much so I recognize it in dialogue quotes (“ “) and dialogue tags (she signed/ he gestured) rather than italics because it’s spoken as much as any other language. It’s also the one language that the speech spell can’t translate because it’s a physical language rather than a verbal one.

Clowngender elf with poor coping skills.#I hope the anime-only watchers know that this is a character to keep an eye on.#Love (in it's many forms) and desire (in it's many forms) is the main course of Dungeon Meshi and THIS silly jester?#My goodness. What a perfect encapsulation of how one can hurt other's so deeply in the name of love.#The actions we take to 'protect' other's is often the route to doing the most harm.#Love is letting go.
