The Birthday Deal

Summary: Donnie just can't believe Q.B. didn't want to celebrate her birthday with them. And Q.B. can't believe Donnie won't just drop the conversation.

A/n: I wrote this blurb, but realized it doesn't fit into the Mystic Library episode very well, sooo I cut it. But, I liked it, and will reference it in a future chapter, so I decided to just post it here as a short one-shot. Don't expect this to become the norm.

"I can't believe you never told us about your birthday!" Donnie huffed as he sat back in his chair.

"Donatello, I just didn't want to celebrate it, that's all." Q.B. didn't look up from the motor she was fixing. "Besides, you've had access to my personal information since before we met."

"Which you very rudely asked me to stay out of and I very graciously obliged." Donnie pointed out.

That got her to look at him. She narrowed her eyes at him. "Do you hear yourself when you speak?"

"As it stands, you do realize this now means we have to celebrate with an even bigger party." Donnie returned to his work, unable to handle her unshakable gaze. Shelldon's ungraded motors weren't going to fix themselves.

"Absolutely not." Q.B. scoffed.

"Absolutely yes." Donnie countered.

"Donatello. No." Q.B. continued to shake her head as she returned to his work.

"Quinn. Yes—," Donnie dodged the screwdriver that was thrown at him with scary precision. He turned back to the other mutant, mouth agape in shock.

"When someone says 'no', they mean 'no'." She snarled at him. She got up from her seat and walked over. "So, to reiterate," she bent down and picked up the screwdriver. When she stood up, she pointed the phillips head at him, "N-O."

Donnie swallowed hard, his mouth dry, and watched as she returned to her seat. She returned to her work in silence. A million thoughts raced through Donnie's mind, but nothing tangible he could grasp or act on.

That was the scariest, cutest, craziest thing ever. Why wouldn't she just let them celebrate? Did she not like her birthday? When did her aim get that good? Note to self, no more sharp objects in Bea's hands while talking to her. Addendum: Stinger could be the exception if in battle. Addendum to the addendum: so long as that battle is not against him. Or his brothers.

"I can feel you looking at me." Q.B. muttered.

"Why not?" Donnie blurted out. Q.B. raised her eyebrows but said nothing. She was forcing him to explain himself. "Why not celebrate your birthday?"

Q.B. scoffed irritably. "What's to celebrate?" She grumbled to herself.

That hurt. Donnie frowned. "Everything?" Q.B. paused and turned to look at him curiously. Feeling he had to explain himself (again), Donnie continued, "We...never really celebrated our birthdays growing up." They didn't even know about birthdays until April had mentioned them. "So, now we go all out." He couldn't look at her. Not when her eyes suddenly turned sad and looked at him with pity. So, he turned back to his motor. "Just wanted to celebrate."

Q.B. was quiet, but Donnie could see in his peripheral that she wasn't working. "I can feel you looking at me." He sighed.

Q.B. turned and looked at the motor in her hands. "I didn't want to celebrate this birthday." She clarified. Donnie continued to work. "It....it was my first birthday without my family. My first birthday like...this." Her lower hands gestured to herself. "And then Raphael dragged me to fight Meat Sweats, and I just wanted to be alone and..." Now she was rambling. Donnie looked at her.

Q.B. trailed off and looked back at him expectantly.

"Well," Donnie sniffed haughtily before he stood up and walked over to her, "That just means you owe me a birthday." Q.B. looked at him confused as he took her finished motor and held both motors up triumphantly. "You better be ready, Q.B. Santos because next year we are throwing you the biggest, loudest, most grand celebration of life ever." With every adjective he added, he climbed onto a taller surface. First a nearby box (full of totally valuable junk, and NOT garbage, thank you very much), then a chair, and finally a table.

Q.B. blinked twice, then her snout scrunched up and she laughed. She stood up and flew to meet his height. Her upper hands took the motors from him and passed them down to her lower hands. Then, her upper hands grabbed his hands and formally shook them once. "Hamato Donatello, you've got yourself a deal."

tetia is so interesting as right now shes the only apprentice with ultimately no backstory thats been revealed, yet the few moments that are focused on her are very telling of what kind of environment she may have been in before being brought in to the atelier. qifreys atelier and his apprentices have a very prominent theme of being problem children/troubled children (much like qifrey himself) which does have me wondering what tetias background is - im even more curious because of how long we have yet to see anything! also how it seems current arc is weaving tetia in (kind of?)

i love that 42.5 was a bonus chapter but also is one of the few bits of writing that is so telling for why tetia is the way she is and what she values. shes such a special character to me (which to be fair i very much say about all the apprentices) the spectacular thing about the apprentice writing to me is how you can somewhat slot them into specific archetypes (as in, "kind bubbly girl" "rival", etc) but what shines through is all these little things that make these characters feel, to me, very fascinatingly human and unique. people you may have known or been who learn and grow (one of my favorite parts in wha is when the apprentices' have epiphanies. quite wonderful)

but anyway ch 42.5 was crazy to read for the first time like oh this kid most definitely comes from an environment where she could not truly express herself in any way shape or form and cares so so deeply about self expression and making the world a better place. passion is so unbelievably important. she also may be looked down on for creating magic that doesnt seem all that "useful" to most. FOR reference the way that chapter 42.5 goes is tetia being excited about choosing a dress to wear for silver night festival and looking at all the different ones, to which agott is uninterested and says something dismissive - how its stupid, and i really like how tetia immediately goes off on her and talks about how its important to some people, how something small like a bow or a ribbon can change how the world views someone and how they view themself, and i Also really like how agott comes to apologize and takes a moment to form an appreciation for the artistry in her own way. how very sweet. (casual apprentice interaction as in interaction where they arent in a Stressful dangerous situation is something very interesting to me)

and i think agott was also a good choice to clash with tetia in this chapter in how agott has some deeply rooted issues with being perceived and approved of by others, of course contrasted by tetia who tries her best to stand up for herself no matter how unkind the world may want to be.

The choujin x official translations have been really good since chapter 1. Just reading through both versions of this new chapter, everything flows so much better while still retaining the original meaning. We lost the Tokio-san/Akuma-kun detail, but aside from that I think every line is worded as perfectly as possible. Azuma’s backseating makes more sense, using “relentless” was such a good idea, I’m just really happy abt it.

also the “oni/onii-chan” to “son of a/treat me like a son” translation from chapter 42.5 was so good. And all of Ely’s poop special moves.

I was cleaning up my fanfic folder and I found this. It was written in like 2018 and left to sit because I was planning to expand it, but it felt like a nice little snapshot where it was, so I just wrapped up the last chapter and am posting it now, because Homestuck is the fandom equivalent to the Hotel California. Anyway, pretend it's a late birthday present for Dave, I suppose?

I currently do not have any other snippets anywhere near this level of complete (though I have one other one that's like half done) so I'm not sure if this story will ever be updated again but, like I said, Hotel California of fandoms.

Time is weird as fuck here. It’s your thing, but when you got here the more broad sweeping parts changed. Hours, minutes, seconds, the lengths of time you usually hop around, are all the same. But days, months, years? On the meteor it was all arbitrary. There was no sun to say what day and night were supposed to be, so it was up to you and you kept it on Earth time down to the second. 

But here? Here shit’s different. Jade tried to get the angles right, but the planet spins too slow- It’s 25 hours each day now- and it zooms around the new sun too fast-350 of the new days, which is about 364 and a half of the old. So, like, it’s close. It’s just enough to drive you nuts. 

Well, okay, you’ve adjusted to that bit, but no one else seems to understand why you feel inclined to say “in 36 hours and 24 minutes” instead of “X time tomorrow.” That’s really what drives you nuts. So you know the age of this universe down to the millisecond, but John blindsides you when he tells you it’s your birthday. 

Well shit, you should have known, really. You were at Jade’s and Jake’s joint party up until 42.5 hours ago. 

“How old are we again?” You ask. Well, with the jumps you’re 167,270.43 hours with rounding for some uncertainty with states of limbo between dimensions when time is meaningless and beyond even your grasp. But you don’t think that kind of thing is useful for him. 

For any of them but you and Aradia. 

“Nineteen! Well, I mean, you are. I’ve got to wait four more months.” 

Two thousand seven hundred and fifty hours, your brain translates. 

Karkat throws a pillow at him because it’s the crack of dawn. 

“What the fuck, Karkat? I brought food!” 

Karkat grumbles and buries his face in your chest. You wince slightly, but you know he’s not thinking. Doesn’t mean anything. You take your pillow and carefully extract yourself from him anyway, busily telling yourself that. 

“It's too goddamn early," you inform John.

"Pfft, says you."

You shake your head sadly. “You are a broken teenager,” You say. “A broken fucking teenager.” 

He left twenty-five minutes ago. The clock said it was 6:32 new time. And it’s December. Which is a really fucking stupid thing since they decided to make the months even, so this is now month fourteen in the fucking calendar. But Quattordecember sounds even more fucking stupid. 

John sticks his tongue out at you. “Or maybe you should start learning to be a functioning adult. I mean, you won’t even have the teenage excuse a year from today!” He gives you a plate of pancakes. And as much as you want to sass him more, there’s fucking blueberries in this and you missed blueberries so fucking much. 

It’s the little things. Now you just need to get coffee figured out. Still, the sludge will do. Anything to get that precious, precious caffeine into your veins. You take an extra mug and waft it under Karkat’s nose until he perks up enough to snatch it. 

“How long until we have to go all the way to the Crockers’ place?” You ask. 

The curtains are open, and out of the corner of your eye you see Jane stop shoveling to wave good morning to you. 

John waves back ecstatically before saying, “It’s at one.” 

“And you woke us up at 7 why?!” Karkat demands. 

“I was hungry and I didn’t wanna cook twice.” 

Karkat steals one of John’s pancakes and takes a massive bite out of it. “None for you, then, asshole.” He says through his teeth. 

John just laughs and takes one of his, making sure to cover the rest of his plate in syrup so Karkat’s hands will get sticky if he tries to take anymore. Unfortunately for John, you are a little shit and you have a fork. All of the pancakes have probably been on every single plate by the time you’re done, and they’ve dripped all over the sheets. But most of it’s on John, so you still consider that a victory.

You realize you haven’t thought about time once since John came in. The clock is always ticking in the back of your mind, as it has been since you entered the game, but the sound is quieter when you’re not alone. It’s an adjustment, but as long as they're around you think you'll eventually get used to this.

17. Did any books surprise you with how good they were?

Honestly I read a lot of meh books this year so this took me a second to think about, but actually If We Were Villains absolutely destroyed me in the best way and I wasnt expecting to love it as much as I did!

19. Did you use your library?

Yes!!!! I had a hard time when they cancelled their delivery service without warning in the middle of the year, but I’m managing to get down there myself more often now, so its okay! I’ve read 42.5 library books this year and I still have a small pile I’m hoping to get through in the next few days.

24. Did you DNF anything? Why?

ooh I dont actually think I DNF’d any this year!! I tend not to DNF many books - my brain clings to stories a bit and I need to finish things in order to close that chapter in my mind. The last book I DNF’d was Sugar Rush by Julie Burchill, which goodreads says was a year ago, so I dont know if it was this year or last year! It was a book I’ve had on my shelves for a long time, and I’m trying to read more of my unread books to get rid of any I dont like, and I made it halfway through that one before the urge to throw it halfway across the room became too great.

Have you ever had your heart snatched out of your chest and stomped on right in front of you?

This is how I feel... I feel alone, worthless like nothing in this world would brighten my day again.

The sunset will never be breath taking again.

A football game will never be fun again... Nothing matters but her.

I was so torn inside I couldn't muster the courage to say her name or my world would crash completely to my feet and there would be no coming back.

She left, rejected me... for the life of me I never would have guess it would hurt this bad.

Now I understand why a man would become a rouge wolf.

I knew now why they are so bitter and angry because this is the worst punishment a man or woman could ever go through.

My life was never meant to be this way... I was supposed to find her, we fall madly in love and watch her grow with my pups.

Sit in the back yard together and watch our pups play while we laugh with joy... we were supposed to grow old together.

No this, I was never meant to find her then lose her in less than a month.

I couldn't get her look of horror out of my head, it haunted me in my sleep and throughout my days.

I definitely couldn't shake the sound of her blood curdling scream from bouncing around in my head constancy sending shivers of agony though my body.

Why, why did this happen to us... I thought if I showed her the real me she would be accepting, a little freak out of course, I could have handled that but she ran from me.

A grunt of pain left my lips as a shot of fire pierced through my heart.

I collapsed against the wall outside sliding down, my legs refused to hold my weight anymore.

I clutched at my chest, a grimace on my face as I waited for it to pass.

This has been happening more often, I think it was her letting me go further and further from her heart and life.

It was tearing me apart the more she pushed me away.

I ruggedly breathed through the pain for a few minutes till it faded but always lay dormant for the next time she let herself forget a piece of me go.

Tears built in my eyes, I didn't want her to forget me, I wanted her to love me.

I brought my knees up to my chest and lay my head down on them.

This wasn't fair... I would forever have a hole in my heart.

I know that I asked Liam to help me but I was just being selfish, he had his own mate to deal with, he doesn't need my mate problems on his shoulders too.

I began choking on my sobs... she was so lucky... she could forget me because she was human, she would be forever in my mind and heart even if it's incomplete and always will be.

"Dominic?" Alpha Jacob's voice had me shooting my head up out of surprise.

Shit... I scrambled up to my feet... I couldn't have him see me so weak when I was going to be the next beta out of some miracle.

"Alpha." I inclined my head down standing at attention, showing him respect with my eyes cast down.

He had Wyatt our Beta next to him and he was giving me a sympathetic look and I cringed.

"What are you doing, son?" the Alpha asked me.

"Nothing sir," I said, nodding and looking over to Beta Wyatt.

"Come. Take a walk with us," he said giving me a gentle smile.

This was our Alpha, he was one of the best a pack could have.

Refine, charming, generous, caring along with strict and stern all the quality's an Alpha need to be a great leader.

He passed all those traits down to his son and I knew this pack was in good hands.

I nodded and quietly followed them as they went over the estate looking for thing to fix and change.

They were talking amongst themselves and I was starting to get annoyed as to why the hell they wanted me to walk with them if they were just going to ignore me.

I could be wallowing in self-pity right now... I sighed as I watched the two men, I was envious of them of one thing though.

They had women who loved them unconditionally... they never knew the feeling of what a rejection could do to you.

It made you physically weak, depressed and hurt all over to where dying would be the best antidote.

To bad I wasn't suicidal, it would made thing a whole lot easier though.

"So Dominic, you've improved in your training drastically. I would have to say your one of the top in the group along with Liam," Alpha Jacob said.

"I am?" I asked, astonished. I hadn't noticed.

I guess I have been working my ass off, more so to keep my mind busy.

"Yes, you're working your way up there. You're almost Enforcer material, you could be defending our lines in but a short amount of time. Wyatt and your father Reed have kept close tabs on your progress and with a little separate training you could stand beside your father."

I gaped at them as we came to a stop at the of the house.

"Seriously?"

He laughed as Wyatt had just a small smile on his face.

"Wyatt would be willing to teach you, if you're up for it along with your father of course."

"Y-yes, yes it would be an honor to be an Enforcer," I told them.

And it was true I have always wanted to be a defender of our pack, be the one they can look up to along with their Alpha and here was my opportunity.

"Good, we'll have you start tomorrow," he said and I nodded eagerly.

"But Dom, there's one condition," he was suddenly very seriously. I turned warily.

"What's that, Sir?"

"That you don't let this consume you. You're young, have fun, hang out with your friends."

My enthusiasm died quickly and I scoffed bitterly.

"No disrespect to you Alpha but I honestly don't care about that. About hanging with friends or anyone for that matter, Sir," I told him truthfully.

He sighed his face dropping a bit in disappointment and then I realized that something was wrong, the way they were acting was off.

"You know... don't you?" I asked suspiciously and their eyes widened before reluctantly nodding in unison.

"Right..." I hissed angry that they were pitying me.

"Did you give the position to me to make me feel better?" I asked a little harsh than necessary.

"No, that was all you."

I nodded, suddenly wanting to be somewhere else.

"Can I be excused?" I asked looking anywhere but their direction and I heard a sigh.

"Dom, you have to let us help you... others don't have people to help them through this," Beta Wyatt said.

"No offence Beta but even if they had people, there is nothing you can say or do that will make this easier. So can I leave now," I growled staring at the ground.

"Liam asked me to help and you are a member of my pack... I will not give up on you Dominic no matter what you say, I am here to help those who need it," Alpha said.

I shook my head and walked away not even waiting to be excused.

"Dude, she was all over me at Tyler's party. Screaming my name all night man," Shane said getting a high five from the guys at our table.

He was gossiping about getting laid to the guys as we sat for lunch.

Alpha Jacobs forced me to go to school today even though I refused, you can't ignore orders.

Sighing I moved my food around my plate keeping my eyes down so they wouldn't wonder across the room where 'she' was.

I could smell her and it made my wolf whine in agony.

He was torn that she didn't except us and I could feel him weakening every day.

We were dying and there was nothing I could do to stop it.

The further she got, the dimmer our life got.

That was a good thing... I didn't need their pity.

He shrugged and went back to talking.

Soon enough the bell rung and we all got up.

Seth was beside me as we made it to our class, about one step in the door I forgot to get my math book so I told him to tell the teacher.

Nodding he went to sit in his seat while I race back down the hall reaching my locker.

The corridors were empty so I quickly grabbed my book and slammed my locker shut... right when I turned I noticed a figure walking my way down the hall and knew instantly it was her.

The smell of her jasmine scent made me want to whine and the glow of her caramel color skin looked so soft I wanted to touch her so badly.

She tried and kept her eyes away from me by using her long curly hair as a veil but we were alone and this was a chance I could have to get her back.

"Jeanine," I said my voice weak but she heard me and she flinched walking faster.

"Jeanine," I called out louder, following her now.

"Please, talk to me," I begged but she refused to acknowledge me like all the other times I've done to get her to hear me out.

I sighed grabbing her arm gently but she still let out a squeak of fright.

Her beautiful brown eyes were tainted with the look of terror.

I snatched my hand back like she had burned me.

She was scared... she was afraid of me.

My heart died a little more as my wolf howled.

"I'm sorry," I whispered.

"Just leave me alone, Dominic."

Her chin was quivering and her eyes were filling up with tears.

"Jeanine, I would never hurt you. I love you..."

"Stop," she cut me off.

"Don't Dom."

She spun on her heels and ran.

"JEANINE," I screamed after her.

Again the fire shot through my heart again and I crumbled to my knees holding my chest and gritting my teeth from crying out.
