Holla for challah!!! A twist on the classic - I used a bit of brown sugar along with the regular granulated when proofing the yeast. It’s gives it just a touch of depth and richness that when topped with flaky sea salt in lieu of poppy seeds is perfectly balanced! Recipe is up on the site and it’s super easy. However you have a total of 2 1/2 hours of rise time so this is one you definitely need to plan in advance! Planet SJ explains post No.1

The Planet SJ exhibition currently on view at ArtProv Gallery in Providence  contains many, many images spanning nearly 18 years of studio projects, films, experiments.

At last Friday’s opening reception people often asked me "Where do you find your inspiration?" "

Target, Aisle 3" may not have been the best go-to answer...

To jog my own memory I thought I'd share select images and unpack one a day...or one a week...or one a month...

Pictured above you’ll find "Sugar", a painting from my animation "Chronicles of Professional Eulogist.” I painted it with gouache on Arches black cover paper and it’s perhaps a 5″x7″ field on a 8″ x10″ inch punched-hole paper.

Most of my research for this film took place in Chicago where I spent three years as a graduate student at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Many of the clergy I visited resided on the South Side. As I imagined the “University of Eulogy” - the film’s central location - my brain vacillated between the crumbling environs of this district and the interiors of majestic spiritual centers.

At some point I journeyed to Philadelphia. Maybe to look at a mattress factory? I dined at a restaurant called “Honey’s” where my friend Sherae Rimspey worked back in those days.  Comfort food does not begin to describe the menu at Honey’s.  If I had truly matriculated to the University of Eulogy this is the food I would want to consume...

Btw, Sherae makes a cameo appearance in my animation -if one can do cameo as an animated figure-and is now a lecturer herself at SAIC!
