Cassandra lounged in the evening light, enjoying the first signs of spring. Robert was reading her the latest letter from the North Western, this time it had been sent from their No.3.

“Percy managed to bury himself in a snowdrift near Ulfstead…”

“Of course he did.” Cassandra interrupted lazily, “near the road bridge I’d wager.”

“...he dislodged the snow from the cliffs above when whistling at a rude lorry on the road bridge,” Robert laughed as he read.

Cassandra shook her head as the other engines laughed, “I told him, but what do I know? I’ve only been running the line for forty years.”

Tyto snorted, “I think he takes you warning him as a challenge.”

“It feels like it at times,” Cassandra sighed, “it's not all his fault though.”

“The big engines mentioned his memory being affected…” Ceri said cautiously.

Cassandra nodded, “It comes and goes, but most of his accidents are caused by that.”

Robert continued, “James received a new coat of paint, but was then asked to cover coal trains while Jupiter goes in for overhaul. He has been insufferable.”

The three North Western engines all burst out laughing.

“Oh noooo…,” Ceri said.

“I'm so glad I'm not at Tidmouth right now.” Tyto laughed.

“James is your No.5 right, the one who kept coming up with schemes to keep from being painted black under the other railway?” Abbey asked.

“The same,” Cassandra chuckled, “he's very proud of his red paint, and always does his best to stay clean for as long as possible when repainted.”

“And instead he got put on coal duties,” Ceri laughed softly.

Robert shook his head and continued, “Eagle asks that Cassandra and Screech keep Tyto out of trouble.”

“We have been trying.” Screech said lazily.

“I’m not that bad.” Tyto protested. She was ignored.

“Jinty thought it would be funny to play a prank on Gordon and tell him that he overslept and was late for the express…so there is now a new record for the westward run of the Wild Nor’Wester.”

Abbey glared over at Enid, “Don’t even think about it.”

The engines chuckled as Enid protested her innocence.

Cassandra chuckled, “She needs to watch out, Gordon will get even.”

Robert read on, “Edward says to tell you hello and that Duck is managing the branch well in your absence, even if the news the quarry is buying a diesel has Daisy unusually smug, even for her.”

Cassandra rolled her eyes, “of course she is.”

“Why are they buying a diesel,” Ceri asked.

Cassandra stretched as she answered, her valve gear creaking as she did so, “most of the Quarries on my line use older engines as shunters, but they're wearing out. They companies came together and decided the first to get a new engine would try a diesel. The Ffarquhar Quarry Company shunter is the oldest, former Sodor and Mainland. They're being donated to the Suddery Rail Museum, as any overhaul to bring them back into service would risk having another engine waking in their frames, so they've ordered a class 04.”

Abbey glanced over at the lazily lounging tank engine, “...you already knew.”

“Of course. It's my branchline.” The tank engine said simply.

“And you didn't tell Daisy.”

“And deal with her being that smug? No thank you,” Cassandra snorted, “I told Percy just before I left.” 

Ceri burst out laughing, “oh that's genius, he would tell her without even thinking about it.”

“And I don't have to deal with it.” Cassandra confirmed smugly.

Robert smirked, “Toby says to tell you that he knows what you did.”

Cassandra just chuckled.

“Eric says hello to his little sister…”

“I am the oldest!” Cassandra protested

“...and that he is enjoying his time as Tidmouth Station pilot.”

“I’m glad to hear it,” Cassandra could help but smile as she rolled her eyes at her younger sibling’s cheek.

“Eric is the engine built after your design right? Abbey asked.

“Yes, but he is a bit larger, an 0-6-2, which he claims makes him the big sibling, even though I’m almost forty years older than him.”

Robert suddenly smirked at the next paragraph and held it up for Cassandra to read. Her smirk joined his.

“I have good news,” she said.

“Oh?,” Freda said. She had been polishing Screech’s fittings with Gywn.

“Your new engine arrives next week,” Cassandra said smugly.

“What!?” The question came from several different angles.

The tank engine's eyes sparkled with mirth, “Part of the reason I was sent here was to see if the Uman and Din would be a good home for one of the engines I helped save. They’ve been overhauling her since I sent word shortly after I arrived. She's probably just finished being run in.”

“Won’t the Other Railway try to stop you from giving us an engine?” Becca asked hesitantly.

Cassandra shook her head, “As far as the Other Railway knows she was scrapped so they won't have any idea where you got her.”

“Are they a Swindon engine?” Enid asked hopefully. 

“It doesn’t matter if they are.” Abbey said firmly, “we’ll welcome them all the same no matter their origin.”

“Of course!” Enid agreed, “I’m very grateful that any engine is willing to make their home with us, and very happy Caomhnóir trusts us to take care of them…but I would like to see more of our cousins find a home here.” She said quietly.

Cassandra chuckled, “I understand the feeling,” she said warmly, “you’re all family.”

Enid nodded.

“...which is why I chose a Swindon built engine.”

She chuckled at the Uman and Din's happy whistles at the news.

a few questions about the avatar au: 1. what are the roles of everyone? is lady aang, thomas katara, percy sokka, gordon zuko and henry toph? 2. what bending power does duck have? 3. how will the last agni kai play out?

yessss a question for the avatar AU…. :D a bit of rambling ahead because I am incredibly autistic about this new AU of mine. I've also answered your second question through the first question, if you don't mind :)

like I've mentioned before, this AU is set in an alternate universe where the air nomads are still alive and there's no hundred year war. there's still conflict though. this isn't really an "X in Y's place" AU -- I'm fitting the ttte/cstm characters in the atla universe. I'll tell you what the steam team is doing in the AU! (art of some of them here)

thomas is a young, amateur waterbender from the southern water tribe. he spends most of his time hanging out with edward and percy. he always gets into trouble -- stuck on ice floes, buried underneath snow, and drenched in water after a failed waterbending attempt. this was also one of the ways he encountered lady, which is after an avalanche near a cave. thomas proposed the idea that all four of them travel the world together and find bending arts teachers for lady ("I need to train too and become a really great waterbender!")

edward is a waterbending master from the southern water tribe. although he still has a lot of fire in him, he displays little interest in fighting and spends his free time brewing tea and writing in his journal. despite not revealing much about his past prior to living in the south pole, he teaches thomas waterbending and is some sort of father figure to him. edward's respected by a lot of tribespeople, though they tend to poke fun at him for being too old. after the formation of team avatar and getting his two old friends to join (after visiting the earth kingdom and fire nation consecutively), they said that edward is able to bloodbend, but edward entertained the silly idea by saying that "he's too old and small for that". he is also VERY quick and agile in chi-blocking techniques.

henry is a strong yet sickly, cynical yet gentle earthbender from gaoling, earth kingdom. after noticing the rising tensions in politics in ba sing se and witnessing how corrupt the dai li has become after a life-threatening accident, henry resides in the quieter part of the earth kingdom and manages his own flower/tea shop. after team avatar witnessed his immense strength in apprehending bandits wreaking havoc in his shop, lady asked henry to get on board the team. henry initially refuses, not wanting to get caught up in any weird life-threatening avatar business, but after being convinced by edward, he eventually folds. thomas does notice that his teacher acts awkward around their team's newest earthbending teacher.

gordon is the youngest son of a nobleman from the fire nation. he had a disgraceful agni kai -- stemming from a difference in political beliefs regarding their family and their relations to the fire nation army -- between him and his older remaining brother, scott. gordon lost, but not officially, as scott refused to scar him, disgracing both him and gordon. he then ran away to the boonies of the fire nation where he honed his lightningbending skills -- his signature bending arts -- in order to restore his pride. he first met team avatar when he challenged lady in an agni kai (gresleys loooove their agni kais) until edward had to chi-block him before he even launched an attack. as prideful as ever, gordon believes lady needs a firebending teacher (true) and joined team avatar. he doesn't seem too thrilled to see his old distant friends on board with him, though.

james is an ember island theater actor who believes he deserves more than what he's paid. he's very passionate about acting but is dissatisfied with the scripts given to him. team avatar encountered him when he was playing gordon in one of the plays (and horribly butchering his character). james joined because he wanted to learn more about their journeys and thought that he's essential to lighten up everyone's spirits. james is still his vain self and once told lady that being the avatar isn't THAT hard but he's a genuinely caring person. he's also the "bard" of the group and has some sassy yet well-meaning pick-me-ups. his favorite songs to cover are "girls from ba sing se" and "secret tunnel". also he and gordon once got drunk off cactus juice and the group never let him live that down.

percy is a nonbender from the southern water tribe. he's a known charmer for both his cute-ish face and determined personality. his mother was duck's sister, an earth kingdom noblewoman, while his father is a south pole tribesman. since there's no hundred year war in this AU, percy trains as a south pole tribe warrior just to guard the south pole village. since there's no threat (until d10's army invaded because he heard that lady is there), he spends most of his days helping out the tribespeople with whatever task they have or getting himself dragged into thomas' antics, including being the avatar's playful "bodyguard" in their world-cross journey.

toby is a waterbender from the northern water tribe and is the first person to be recruited in team avatar after they had left the southern water tribe. he was initially mavis' (the north pole princess) caretaker and one of the waterbending masters, but after an attack from d10's fire army, she turned into the moon to preserve waterbending. toby then joined team avatar out of guilt but found himself to be entertained by thomas and percy's antics and lady's curiosity about the world outside the air temples, which gives him hope for the youth. toby also has a strong dislike towards the fire nation army and the earthbending soldiers, particularly the dai li, and is well-versed in the militaristic structures of the two big countries and their weaknesses.

duck is an earthbender from one of ba sing se's noble families. he's really loyal to his city and the earth kingdom itself. although many people consider him charming and intelligent, he's really adamant about following laws, though this is mostly because of his family's influence. the little western (don, doug, oliver, toad) is kinda his body guards/personally recruited soldiers that work for him loosely and their primary target is to watch over diesel, a suspected spy from d10's army. duck senses that d10 is planning something bad for ba sing se. this is also his reasoning to join team avatar (despite initially distrusted by the strike trio). even though he doesn't always follow them around, he provides updates regarding the fire nation and earth kingdom.

and that's all for the famous 8!

as for the final agni kai, I'm still thinking about that one. at first, I was thinking the final agni kai wil be between spencer and gordon instead of between scott and gordon because the two brothers never genuinely hated each other while the two cousins are seconds away from blowing each other up. but, in what reason would spencer be working with diesel 10? why would he side with a nonbender who wants to abandon the old ways of bending and bring forth a new era in an extreme way? then I thought of spencer just being a massive fire nation glazer (and having thrown scott in jail or injured him) and how his dislike for team avatar turned into hate after they freed the prisoners from the boiling rock prison (including hiro). I'll get back to the idea later because I LOVE gresley family drama

I hope you enjoy it! Please note that these are subject to slight changes.

NWR Number One: Thomas Billinton. The official - and self-proclaimed - face of the North Western Railway. Best friend to Percy, the main engine of the Ffarquhar branch line, and until recently the boyfriend of Liora "Lady" Moran. He is currently in a relationship with Rosie, though he visibly still holds a candle for Liora. Cocky and confident at face value, but highly insecure deep down and far more complex once you get to know him.

NWR Number Two: Lady Edward Stewart-Moran. Married to Zebedee Moran, a harbour tug from Liverpool and Bigg City. Mother to Percy, Liora (Lady), Bill, and Ben. Also has an older daughter, Susannah, and a baby daughter, Eve, who are both tugboats like their father. The "work Mum" for all engines on Sodor, and universally adored. Has a past history of mischief and trickery, which was passed to her youngest sons. The train equivalent of aristocracy, Edward is the rebellious, and sadly only surviving, daughter of the Earl/Count of Cumbria, a title she will inherit. Frequently regarded as one of the most attractive engines on Sodor in spite of her age, even being referred to as a "Milf" by Flying Scotsman.

NWR Number Three: Henry Stanier. The illegitimate half-brother of Gordon and Flying Scotsman, husband to Emily, and ex-husband to James as well as being the father of James's eldest son. Despite causing the breakup of Henry's first marriage, Gordon remains Henry's best friend and is unwittingly a rival of Flying Scotsman because of it. Blighted by ill health, made worse by the end of his marriage to James, Henry is very health conscious and suffers a little from hypochondria, but is now doing well thanks to his new wife, his son with James, and his growing family with Emily. After his last long illness, Henry grew a full beard and moustache, and decided to keep it after being told it suited him.

NWR Number Four: Gordon Gresley. The eldest legitimate son of the famous Gresley family (Henry is the oldest but illegitimate) and the official Express engine for the NWR. Older brother to Flying Scotsman and cousin to Mallard, Spencer, and Ryan. Now married to James, with whom he has always been in love but was too proud to admit until after her marriage to Henry, father of two children and stepfather/half-uncle to James' eldest son. Proud, arrogant, and pompous, Gordon is also capable of almost profound kindness and will always (eventually) own up to his faults, and will move heaven and earth for those he loves. Initially jealous of his more famous younger brother, Flying Scotsman, recent changes in his life have made him realise that perhaps his own life is much happier. Also the only reason Mallard is still in touch with the family. Very proud of his South Yorkshire roots, though he only ever reveals "The Accent" when flustered or angry.

NWR Number Five: James Stanier-Gresley. The original blonde bombshell of the NWR, known for her flamboyant, fast style as much as her splendid red uniform/paint. Wife of Gordon, ex-wife of Henry, and mother of currently three children between them. Her confident, vain persona masks a deep-seated lack of self-worth and terror of being abandoned that resulted in James placing all her value in her, admittedly very beautiful, looks. Although she has always been in love with Gordon, his seeming rejection led her to seek comfort in Henry, with whom she married and had a son. James has no regrets about marrying Henry, who she holds up as a very loving husband right up until their divorce and an exceptional father, she maintains her greatest regret is that she had an affair with Gordon rather than ending her marriage to be with him and keeps Henry's name for her son's sake. Her two children with Gordon have ensured the future of the Gresley line. James is half-Trinidadian through her father, using her memories of his experiences to try and help Nia transition into life on Sodor.

NWR Number Six: Percy Moran. The eldest son of Edward and Zebedee, younger brother of Susannah, older brother to Bill, Ben, and Eve, and twin brother to Liora (Lady), Percy is actually genetically half-tugboat, exhibited by his bulkier physique and is surprisingly strong. He works on the Ffarquhar branch line, handling the goods work, and is the official Sodor Mail train - a role he is obsessively proud of having and takes extremely seriously. Best friends with Thomas, although this is often a surprise to newcomers to Sodor and the UK as the two spend a lot of time insulting one another for fun. This relationship has become a little strained after Thomas dated Percy's sister and almost ended after the relationship ended, but is slowly recovering. After his mother, Percy misses his father the most, causing him to find substitute father figures in Toby and Gator. Next in line to inherit the Earl/Count of Cumbria after Edward, and possibly even less interested in it besides occasionally making jokes referring to his 'future countess.'

NWR Number Twelve: Emily Stanier (nee Stirling). The beautiful Emily is a popular figure on Sodor and the adored older cousin of Donald and Douglas. Emily met Henry without knowing that he was married to James, though the marriage was long dead, only learning about it when the two began divorce proceedings a few weeks into the relationship. Despite the initial shock, she continued with the relationship, eventually marrying Henry and becoming stepmother to his son while having a son of her own later. Luckily enjoys an excellent friendship with James and does not overstep as the stepmother. Often remarked on as being very similar to Edward, Emily has become something of a big sister figure on the NWR and has assumed Edward's role after the former's stepping down. Hardworking and friendly, Emily is also stern and serious when needed, capable of keeping her peppery cousins in line.

NWR Number Eighteen: Nia Kur. Originally from the East African Railway, Kenya, Nia is the youngest and most recognisable member of the NWR. Through her harder upbringing on a struggling railway, Nia is mature from her years. Combined with her early puberty, this makes everyone assume she is in her late teens like Thomas and Percy when she was in fact only eleven when she arrived on Sodor. Since her actual age was discovered, Nia has been mothered by Edward, Emily, and James. Thanks to her better understanding of the cultural struggles, Nia gets on best with James and sees the red engine as an auntie figure. She has a tendency to pick at her nails and fidget when nervous or upset, which is usually the only indication that anything is wrong. Nia has become very friendly with Bill and Ben, who are closest to her in age, despite their initial teasing of her. Nia accepted their unusual offer of friendship and unwittingly caused Bill to develop a crush on her. Nia is cheerful, hardworking, and determined to settle into her new life on Sodor.

NWR Number Twenty-Two: Rebecca Bulleid-Gresley. Rebecca is the newest member of the NWR and the relief Express engine for her Uncle Gordon so he can spend more time with his growing family. This was a surprise to everyone on Sodor when Gordon seemed happy with the idea until it was discovered that Rebecca is Gordon's (and Henry's) niece. Rebecca was the only daughter of Gordon's sister, "pretty" Polly Gresley, who was especially close to Flying Scotsman growing up. Sadly, she died when Rebecca was young. Believing her mother's family had abandoned her, Rebecca was very nervous to reveal her identity to her surviving uncles, not knowing that she had inherited several characteristics of her late mother. With the help of Henry, she has reconnected with her family and has taken on the Gresley name officially.

2023 Bahamas Cruise, Part 16. April 7. Driving Long Island.

April 5th we rented a car and drove south to the end of Long Island. At 0800 start calling SeaSide Car Rental on VHF ch. 16. Many businesses here in the Bahamas handle business by VHF. Turns out she had gone to the airport.

Once we got the car, Nancy stopped at the Beauty Salon. Marcie who we met by chance a couple of days earlier gave her an appointment for the next day. Marcie will not only cut your hair, but set you up with fish or crawfish. As she was doing with her customer at the time. No she does not have the fish actually in the shop. That is the beauty salon in the fish market in George Town, Exuma does that.

This is Dolly Fox, Marcies Mother in law. Dolly and Basil own the dock that us cruisers are graciously allowed to use. Her son Roger fishes the Jumentoes and Ragged Islands, you can make an appointment for fish at the beauty salon.

Looking through the windshield of the rental car. Don’t you hate getting in a rental car and having to figure out where all the buttons and switches are. This car is driven from the right side, so the gear shift is on your left. My turn blinker is on the left in my truck. Consequently I turned on the windshield wipers all day long before turning. They kindly put a sign at the top of the window, reminding you to drive on the left side of the road. This is most important when turning on to a road from an intersection. The roads in Long Island have many a pot hole. After avoiding a couple of pot holes in a row, it is easy to end up with the old habit of driving on the right side of the road. To make matters worse, the oncoming car might be avoiding pot holes and is not on their side of the road. P.S. After getting in the first time, never saw the “Keep left” sign again.

The yellow building above is the tourist information building. After picking their brain and armed with maps we headed south. Of course trying to keep in the left lane.

The building on the right is the Museum of Long Island. Patsy Cartwright, the curator, was a wealth of stories. She told us where to find a flock of 50 flamingos and the map to get there.

These young ladies run the public library in Buckly. Lauren, on the right, used to work at Gordon’s bar. So when we got there we mentioned her name. More on Gordon’s below.

“Six degrees of Kevin Bacon” or on Long Island, “Two degrees of separation”. There is a little over 3,000 Bahamians on the island . Most are related somehow. We always ask what their last name is. Here Lauren connects us to Gordon’s Bar.

You can’t say you have been to Long Island, if you haven’t been to Hamiltons Cave. Leonard Cartwright gives tours through the largest cave on Long Island. We spent an hour with Leonard while he showed us one of the three types of bats. Blind crickets, termites trails winding down from above. Lucayan pottery, Money Bats which are the large moths we have in the Keys. This cave has been in his family’s property for generations. People would hide from hurricanes here.

Two degrees of Long Island separation: Just spent the day with James Knowles. We mentioned Leonard Cartwright. James says, yeah he is my cousin.

This cave is not on any tourist map. It is in the Dunmore settlement area. Caves in this area were used by the Lucayan Indians. Directions were given to us by Patsy. Sign…what sign? Address…what address? You go past the blue house on the right, look for a house under construction on the left. Next left is the road to the cave. So here is the real life interpretation of the above instructions we received. There is a blue house about every 2 miles. The house under construction was stopped at least 3 years ago and is now overgrown. Seriously, this island does not have a single address for a building. There are no mail boxes, only PO Boxes. They had a “party line” up until 1992. Salt Pond, one of the bigger settlements only recently received running water. All houses are set up with cisterns.

This is St. Peter and St. Paul’s Anglican Church in Clarence Town. Designed by the famous Father Jerome Hawes and built in 1908. It has twin 55’ towers. Which were purposely designed round like lighthouses. I find it interesting that the majority of older churches on the island all face East. The older graves are a good compass since they face east. Ready for the day of resurrection.

When you live in the islands you have to be inventive. I believe this is the local Jiffy Lube franchise. Note the rock on each ramp ready as a wheel chock.

“Slave canal”, there are two canals in town to flood inland ponds with seawater to produce salt. These canals were hand dug by slaves. Probably 5 ft wide and up to 15 ft deep in a few places. There must be hundreds of miles of dry laid rock walls on this island alone. Most done by slaves. The rock walls were used to fence in livestock and mark property boundaries. Some extend out into the water where it is shallow.

The lady at the tourist bureau, told us about the two flamingos at Doctor’s Pond outside Clarence Town. Flocks of flamingos migrate through each year. But one flamingo hurt its wing and can’t fly. One flamingo has stayed over the years to keep it company. The one on the right has its wing hanging down.

This is Charlie and his roadside straw work stand. Nancy sorted through several baskets and bought a small one for $18. Chickens were running everywhere and she asked about getting some eggs for her basket. No eggs today.

Patsy at the museum told us she saw 50 or so flamingos out at the abandoned salt ponds the week before. With map not drawn to scale, we go off roading with the KIA rental car. Among other things we drive down the abandoned runway on the right side of the photo. Carefully fallowing the map towards a beach with the hope of seeing the flock of flamingos. We are in the middle of nowhere. Only 3,000 people on the whole 57 mile long island. I am worried about the car breaking down. How do you explain where you are, when you don’t know where you are?

Here comes another car at us, on the only section of dirt levee we can pass on. Who would of thought that. We keep going. Turning here and there, looking for the lost flight of flamingos. Then we see a vehicle towards the end of the road. Great, at least if we break down they can help us!

You know what Nancy, that vehicle looks familiar. There are two people. One is wearing a familiar color shirt. I think they were parked on the beach while we were at the blue hole in the dinghy.

Two degrees of Long Island Separation: These two Americans rent a house here for vacation and bonefish from shore each day. We were within sight of each other 21 miles up the coast two days earlier.

Gordon’s Bar and Restaurant at the very southern end of Long Island. Earnest is the proprietor. He recently was in a vehicle accident, that has restricted his ability to run the restaurant.

Cracked Conch with peas and rice, with the Bahamas beer “Kalik”. Kalik is the sound of cow bells clanging during Junkanoo festivals. If you look closely at the label you will see two cow bells.

Two degrees of Long Island separation: This is Lori. She is just volunteering for Earnest and tends the tables. No Bahamian accent. Uh….Lori where are you from? She answers, Jamestown N.D.. She was a nurse in the USNavy. Nancy was a nurse in the USAF. She went to the same nursing college as Nancy’s good friend. Within a year or so of each other.

Nancy mentioned the story about meeting Lori to Marcie during her hair cut. Marcie said they had a Low Country boil at Lori’s house the week before. Two degrees!

This is the famous “Deans Blue Hole”. The second deepest blue hole in the world at 663 ft. . The white raft in the middle is where people conduct free diving competitions. The only person to scuba dive to the bottom did it in 1992, James King. The Bahamas Cave expert is Brian Kakuk. Here is a link to the youtube video he shot on side passages.

Original source is the Breakbeat Bible by Mike Adamo.

The text sequences where developed for the Elektron sequencers Conditional steps changed to percentages for a broader range of sequencers. 

Adamo has examples over 8 bars which have been compressed into one bar with percentage chances of hits. 

The initial idea was for use with the Elektron Rytm and then the Polyend Play to explore their chance based features.

These two sequences have features for conditional steps which have been changes to percentage values for more generalised sequencers.

These scores will sound different to the initial score because of the randomisation and due to different drum kits being used 

while providing an overall feel for the patten. 

One aim of the system is not to duplicate the beat but to provide a basis for variations depending on the needs of the producer and the features of the drum machine.

Studying the breakbeats can be helpful in creating your own.

Breakbeats are used because there is more variety than the standard 4x4 of EDM but if the Kick a shifted a bit and percentages changed these patten can be used. 

Having an initial patten and then using the features of your drum machine is also a useful way to learn the features and gain mastery.

in the smouldering chaos that is my life at the moment, i totally forgot that i had shit to update so here’s a new chapter

It took Gordon two hours in total to finish in the garden. Which, admittedly, was faster than Henry’s normal gardening time, but Henry gardened for the love of it. It was one of his favourite things to do, to relax and unwind. Gordon seemed to accept it as another task to complete, and barrelled through it with surprising precision for the speed he was going.

He had to stop in the doorway on the way in to kick off his shoes at the door, seeing as they were caked in dirt now, lightly brushing off his knees as best he could, and if they thought Gordon was looking tired before, well, now he looked ready to sit down and fall asleep on the spot.

But he paused in the hall, before he sighed, like he just remembered oh yeah they hadn’t eaten yet, and shuffled off towards the kitchen, rolling his shoulders to ease the tension cooping up there.

“Let me.” It was Percy who finally broke the silence. “I can make dinner!”

Gordon paused, glancing at him in surprise. “…You can cook?”

Percy bit his lip as he fought down an embarrassed flush, but to his own surprised watched a flash of something like remorse cross Gordon’s face.

“I mean,” Gordon quickly followed up, “I didn’t know… I, um, oh, my apologies. After living with James for a quite a few years, my standards are low.”

And that seemed to be the right thing to say, teasing a laugh out of Percy, who then hurried into the kitchen and proceeded to usher Gordon out.

“Go sit down before you fall over,” he ordered, giving the far-taller man a good shove, before turning away to get started.

Gordon glanced around, seemingly at a loss to do, before shuffling into the living room.

Thomas was watching him, waiting for him to do something, loiter there, looking uncomfortable.

And Thomas couldn’t help it anymore. “What do you do for fun, Gordon?” he asked, almost pointedly breaking the silence.

“…For fun?” Gordon echoed. He was staring at Thomas so blankly, it made him snort.

“Yeah. For fun.” Thomas sat up properly from where he had draped himself over the sofa. “You have to have something you enjoy, right?”

“I… read, usually,” Gordon crossed the room and eased himself down into an armchair, before clasping his hands over his belly as he thought. “But I will admit, I left my books behind.”

“Hm,” Thomas pretend-frowned, trying to banter. “I didn’t know you liked reading.”

Gordon cleared his throat and looked down. “I also left my glasses behind,” he said in a very small voice.

“Glasses?!” Thomas exclaimed, looming over the armrest in joyous disbelief. “You need glasses?!”

“Just! Just to read!” Gordon shot back, and he was flustered. “I… I’m… oh, nevermind.”

Oh, worse than flustered, he was embarrassed! Normally, Thomas would love to capitalise on his embarrassment, but after his phonecall with Edward he had started to reconsider, well, everything when it came to his old colleague.

“No, no, no, wait,” Thomas backpedalled, flailing his hands about. “I wasn’t making fun of you! I just…”

He rubbed the back of his neck. “It’s nice to think you have something you do for fun,” is how he chose to finish that sentence.

Gordon didn’t say anything, just kind of drummed his fingers and hummed. Then he stood.

“Percy, have you started yet?”

“Um,” Percy stuck his head out of the kitchen. “Not really?”

Gordon gave them a crooked smile, one that looked like the closest thing he would ever get to winking mischieviously. “I have a plan.”

Turns out Gordon’s plan was ringing up Edward and asking if they’d eaten yet. And they hadn’t, so they went over to their flat for the evening.

It felt weird to be knocking on his own front door, but Gordon did it anyway, a solid rap-rap-rap that were probably louder than he intended. A moment later, Henry opened the door to greet them, and was promptly swarmed by the force of nature that was Thomas and Percy.

“Henry!”

Henry did his very best not to fall over, and much to Gordon’s surprise, lifted Thomas and Percy in one arm each as they hugged him, and stepping back to let Gordon past.

“Ah, it’s been so quiet without you!” Henry was joking to them. “Now, come in, come in, I was about to start cooking.”

Gordon closed the door behind them, and he had to admit, the tension just eased out of him as he entered his own home, and he was quick to hang up his woollen overcoat on its usual peg by the door before he was even really thinking about it, and Henry grinned at him.

“You’ve got dirt…” Henry nodded at him, and Gordon looked down at himself, flushing a little. He did indeed have dirt… just kind of everywhere.

“I suppose I do,” he agreed, lamely brushing at his knees again like it made a difference, and after a moment, once again kicking off his shoes. “It turns out your garden doesn’t tend to itself.”

Henry raised an eyebrow at that, to which Gordon could not help himself but mirror. They held this for a beat, before Henry laughed and finally put Thomas and Percy down.

“Edward’s looking forward to seeing you face to face,” Henry said to the three of them. “Go on.”

And he turned to the kitchen once more, and Gordon gestured for his shorter colleagues to go first.

“Edward!” Thomas hollered as they bounded into the room.

“Thomas!” Edward replied with a delighted laugh, waving from his armchair. “Percy! Gordon! Come, sit, come sit. Make yourselves comfortable.”

“Before I sit down, anything you need?” Gordon asked, hovering as Percy and Thomas scrambled to sit either side of Edward on the couch, already talking at him excitedly.

Edward made a show of nodding along to what their shorter compatriots were saying, but his eyes flicked between Henry in the kitchen and Gordon, almost too quick to catch, before he quickly just looked up at Gordon with a pleasant expression. “No, no, I’m quite alright.”

Gordon pointedly raised an eyebrow at him. He recognised the pinched smile Edward was giving him, the pinched smile of ‘I-need-something-but-I-don’t-want-to-ask’.

Edward seemed to start at the expression, before snorting to himself. “I forgot,” he said softly, “that you don’t let me get away with that sort of thing.”

Gordon managed to keep the look of confusion off his own face as Edward rubbed his temple tiredly, before gesturing idly towards the kitchen.

“I have some painkillers I need to take,” he said, voice hushed, almost like he was ashamed of that fact. Which was silly. It made sense to take what the doctor ordered when needed. But hey, he wasn’t here to psychoanalyse the man.

“Done,” Gordon said simply. “Tea, too?”

“Oh, please.”

And as Gordon walked away, he heard Edward whisper to Thomas and Percy, “don’t tell Henry, but Gordon makes the best tea, too.”

On this occasion Frater A.A.S.V.E. he recites the Liber Resh vel Helios Svb Figvra CC, in his version for the Northern Hemisphere and for the Southern Hemisphere, one of the daily practices that the Aspirant performs in the form of solar worship.

As is well known by the practitioners, originally in the invocations he says: "Let him greet the Sun [...] facing (corresponding cardinal point) giving the sign of his grade"; referring to the grade being a member of the A.·.A.·.. But, what happens when one does not have a degree? James A. Eshelman (under the name Frater Iacchus and published in ITC) in his notes on the Liber Resh, says the following:

-"In the past a" generic" sign has often been recommended, this being the Sign of Earth (1º=10 sign of  A.·.A.·., "Set fighting"). However, in ac ollection of unpublushed marginalia to The Equinox, Crowley provided an instrucion for this situation: "Where the aapirant has no grade, let him give the sign given in Vol. I [Liber O in Vol. I, No 2 of The Equinox]: The L.V.X.  sing at dawn, 4º=7º at noon, 2º=9º at sunset, 3º=8º at midnight. ""

So on this occasion we have decided to perform this version in a generic way (but not the only one), which fits perfectly with the practitioner's situation on the Tree of Life (as Eshelman himself points out in the same text later), in the intersection of the Samekh and Peh paths. In this case Eshelman recommends using "Osiris Slain" as a sign of L.V.X. at dawn. In terms of worship, each lineage of the A.·.A.·. possibly provide different instructions both for the adorations and for the sign to be used during them. Under the recommendation of F.O., as a sign both for the invocation of the dawn and for the adorations we have used "Osiris Rising" and the adorations that we have used are found in Ch. III of the Book of the Law. We have had the collaboration of the artist Gordon Scott, who altruistically made the illustrations of the landscapes and the Probationer that appear in the video, in order to help us spread the Great Work. 世界最遅tulaladd2020best DL list

年間ベストを始めて以来、初の事態。

なんと9か月遅れのポスト。あと3か月で次の年ベスの発表時期じゃないですか…唯一にして最大の理由が、もちろんあるにはある。

暗夜行路のような唄声が車内から眺める某庁舎前の雪景色と甘酸っぱい感情を喚起させるRY Xや、このリストには登場しない自分用に作ったプレイリスト（日本語ラップ編、シティーポップ編）をひとりで何度も諳んじては胸を焦がした。それらの音楽が本来持つ資質にプラスして思い出補正でランクインした作品がいくつかある（最たるものがサントラ部門かな）。そんな変化があった2020年でした。

それを除けば、音楽ライフは基本的に前年を踏襲。つまり引き続きapple music依存型で、DIG活動もほほ休止（荷物の山に埋もれたタンテをセッティングし直せるまともな精神状態じゃなかった…）。落第生の体たらくをここ何年も続けてるわけです。とはいえ昨年と比べれば、リスト入り作品の数が格段に増えた＝それなりに楽しい音楽生活が営めていたのも事実。その充実を支えたものがアルゴリズムって点がものすごく納得はいかないけれど。（毎年書いてるけど、手当たり次第サブスクを横断する中で「もう一度聴きたい」と思えたものが以下のDLリスト。感覚的には昨年より緩い5枚に1枚。それでも昨年比3倍の約250枚！）

いつまで延命できるか分からないローカルラジオを継続できたのもラッキーだった。相変わらずみんなとあーだこーだ言いながらいろんな曲を聴く時間が音楽ライフを豊かにしてくれました。感謝。過去最高に音楽への熱が薄いテキストになっちゃうけど、9か月遅れだと致し方なしか。

三ツ星評価のうち、エル・ミシェルズ・アフェアのシングルはラジオの一戸くんレコメン、今年も熱量が持続しているサウスロンドン・ジャズ・シーンのマンスール・ブラウンEPはおなじみWOZNIAK星くんのオススメ、ほかにも人から教わってお気に入りになった作品が少なくないのは、サブスクじゃ届かないリアルの強みが感じられて、そこだけは希望があるのかな。

特筆するとすれば、Bartosz KruczynskiのEARTH TRAX以来追い続けてきたリズムセクション・インターナショナルが、旬のサウスロンドン・シーンと地下ハウス/テクノ・シーンのメルティング・ポットだったことが分かって興味が再燃させられた個人的な事件。そのセンセーションのグラウンド・ゼロにあたるTHE COLOURS THAT RISEの発見が今年No.1の成果かな。

唯一職場で音楽談義ができるために相互レコメンに特化したLINEを展開中のT氏に教えられたエディ・チャコンのアルバム、そのエディの復活劇を手掛け、若林恵さん経由でずっぽりハマったソランジュ『A Seat At The Table』の禅的ミニマリズのデザイナーでもあることが事後に発覚したジョン・キャロル・カービーの2人は、今年ならではの幸福な時間の中で何度も繰り返し聴いた一生の思い出確定盤。ジョンなんか3カテゴリーに分かれてのランクインだもんな。　

さて2021年。あと3か月しかない。今年はやる？やらない？いろいろ越えるべきものが多くすぎてそれ以前の問題かもしれないなけど。
