#OTD in 1981 – Death of Kieran Doherty, TD for Monaghan-Cavan, on the 73rd day of his hunger strike in Long Kesh prison.
Fuair siad bás ar son Saoirse na hÉireann. Kieran went on hunger-strike on Friday, 22nd May, having put his name forward for it long ago, as undaunted and full of fighting spirit as when he roamed free on the streets of Andersonstown. In June 1981, in the Free State general election, Kieran was elected a member of the Leinster House parliament for the Cavan/Monaghan constituency with 9,121 first…

Not from the ask list but the characters in ur fics as Irish counties and why?
anon, this has absolutely sent me. i have genuinely never seen something more up my alley.
let's start with characters we can pull from the series for ireland's six superior counties, shall we...
antrim = oliver wood
a county full of lads who've never met a spivvy tracksuit they don't think is the height of fashion, and who have a vastly inflated sense of their success at sports.
armagh = tom riddle
armagh has a [deservedly] bloody reputation. he could settle down in the murder triangle. he'd like that.
down = draco malfoy
people who live in co. down really like thinking they're better than the rest of us just because it's easy for them to get to belfast [lads, how's that something to boast about?], so they have to be the series' whiniest flop.
fermanagh = rubeus hagrid
fermanagh is full of docile lads who build things, in my experience.
londonderry = ron weasley
canonically gorgeous, gorgeous girlies live in this fine county - by which i mean, of course, that i do. we deserve to be represented by the series' most gorgeous girly. and a ginger sweetheart with six siblings [so you know which side of the sectarian divide his parents are on...] would go down a storm with our mams.
tyrone = harry potter
my brother once had his nose broken in a pub in strabane, which doesn't sound particularly interesting until you realise that my brother is a priest. by which i mean - a county filled with people who are reckless, quick-tempered, and always ready to throw hands? it can only be represented by one man...
---
and then the rest...
carlow = quirinus quirrell
the most interesting thing there is a big rock.
cavan = percy weasley
everyone i've ever met from cavan has been really boring and really tight. so there's that.
clare = ginny weasley
because it's gorgeous, in a not like other girls way.
cork = albus dumbledore
look at this canon line and tell me dumbledore's not a cork man... "In fact, being — forgive me — rather cleverer than most men, my mistakes tend to be correspondingly huger.”
donegal = sybill trelawney
always away with the fairies up there... and always drunk too.
dublin = walburga black
everyone you've ever met who lives in dublin is genuinely shocked to discover that the rest of the world exists beyond the m50. it's not not giving "has never set foot in muggle london and would die before she did".
galway = arthur and molly weasley
galway is the home of the nation's sophisticated [and, apparently, sexually adventurous] culchies - which fits two people from clearly quite distinguished backgrounds who nonetheless live the way they do...
kerry = gilderoy lockhart
you will never see american tourists get scammed more glamorously than in kerry.
kildare = regulus black
considerably less interesting than - and devoid of identity in comparison to - its neighbour, dublin.
kilkenny = charlie weasley
all they do is have red hair and hurl.
laois = daphne greengrass
on account of her irrelevance.
leitrim = sally-ann perks
on account of her irrelevance.
limerick = bellatrix lestrange
limerick used to be known as "stab city". she'd fit right in.
longford = mungundus fletcher
gombeen men abound.
louth = myrtle warren
because they [by which i mean the two people i know who were born there...] are always fucking moaning.
mayo = remus lupin
perpetually mopey, unless they reckon they're great at something.
meath = cormac mclaggen
they wish they were as class as the lads in dublin.
monaghan = cuthbert binns
genuinely couldn't locate it on a map.
offaly = grawp
i mean, who fucking knows? the entire place is a bog.
roscommon = aberforth dumbledore
you can guess why...
sligo = fred and george weasley
wheeler dealers, the lot of them.
tipperary = fleur delacour
the home of gorgeous, gorgeous girlies with striking accents.
waterford = dobby
they love a good strike.
westmeath = hermione granger
not somewhere you'd expect you'd choose to live if you were a bit of a know-it-all. and yet.
wexford = neville longbottom
they love to bang on about the soil.
wicklow = marge dursley
she drives a range rover and looks down on anyone who farms, change my mind.

i apologize for all the asks but i have a question: is there any difference between using “ulster” and “northern ireland”? i’ve seen both used pretty interchangeably here in belfast. i assumed that “ulster” might be a bit controversial because of its reference to the plantation but i could be wrong. what are your thoughts?
- @iron--and--blood (ps did you get my ask about the museum? i was on spotty wifi and idk if it went through)
Yes, there is a difference. Ulster is a province of Ireland which consists of the counties of Donegal, Tyrone, Fermanagh, Cavan, Monaghan, Armagh, Down, Antrim, & Londonderry (nine counties)
Tumblr media
Northern Ireland is a country in the UK which only consists of Tyrone, Fermanagh, Armagh, Down, Antrim, & Londonderry (six counties)
Tumblr media
When the partition happened some ppl wanted to include all of Ulster in the new state of NI, but eventually several counties were excluded, primarily iirc because the excluded places were majority nationalist & catholic, where the creators of NI wanted to create, in the immortal (derogatory) words of James Craig, "a protestant parliament and and protestant state" -- it was easier to keep catholics out of government if the state was carefully constructed to only include counties where protestant unionists could ensure they either had or could create a majority. This is why it's called "Northern Ireland" rather than Ulster, because all of Ulster isn't technically included (of course, NI also doesn't even include the northernmost points of Ireland so that name is also incredibly stupid but I digress).
Anyway while I wouldn't say that the use of Ulster in any context is controversial (since that's literally what the geographic area is called!), many people who identify themselves with it over Ireland are loyalists. Groups with Ulster in the title like the Ulster Defence Force or Ulster Volunteer Force or Ulster Protestant Volunteers are loyalist groups. Additionally, although technically just called the Ulster flag this flag ⬇️
Tumblr media
Is often a literal red flag for someone's political beliefs. Think that covers the basics of it but if any of my mutuals want to add on obviously feel free

DRAGION AGE OC — Dirthadin, Elvhen Keeper of the Dead
Dirthadin — 47, he/him (concept sketch) Mage — Necromancy, Primal, and Entropy. His Vallaslin design is based off both Falon’din and Dirthamen
He has a half shaven head with straight black hair to his shoulder. His eyes are teal with a slight rim of purple. His lips and eyelids are also tattooed. He particularly gaunt, almost skeletal, at a height of 5′9″ with a deathly pallor. His accent is a central Irish one, like Cavan or Monaghan.
Dirthadin was born to the Dalish clan Shirabal and trained as its First until the death of the Keeper, Beladalin. Dirthadin took on a new First, Revaren, and attempted to preserve what he could of Beladalin’s knowledge. He studied the Nevarran art of necromancy, and learned many secrets of magic, but specifically looks for lost knowledge of the Dalish. He passed much of what he could to Revaren, but many of the clan find Revaren too inexperienced to properly lead them  There is little they can do with so few mages before Arlathvhen, however, and neither do they question him to his face.
Some find it selfish of Dirthadin to have abandoned his people and post as Keeper and are somewhat bitter about it. others think that the death of Beladalin affected him so much that he turned to necromancy through guilt and refuses to face the clan as it reminds him too much of the Keeper. All speculation, however, as he avoids the topic complete.
They trusted him to keep them safe regardless of how disturbed some found the practice, but he parted from the clan willingly and passed on the torch of Keeper of Shirabal to his First. He became instead a self-proclaimed Keeper of the Dead, finding it important to restore the knowledge of the Dalish and explore what he could on his own without putting his clan in any danger of his particularly ambitious ventures into haunted, blighted, or otherwise disturbed territories. Thus he took to communing with spirits and collecting knowledge of elves long past at their graves. At times, he digs up the corpses of those who died far from a proper burial site, and puts their body (and spirit) to proper rest.
His mage staff is special to him, the head made of the horn of an ancient halla that has been completely opalized, and the body is petrified sylvanwood inlaid with veins of opalization. The wood is dark in color, but the pale iridescent horn and veins make it stand out, and at times the opal glows with a pale shimmer when he casts magic through it.
Despite his stark visage and chilling magic proficiencies, he is kind with a great passion for knowledge and exploration. He has a soft voice that is complemented by its depth. He attends the Arlathvhen sporadically with new discoveries, finding new means of weaving and sewing, new vallaslin designs, new pottery shapes and techniques, interesting jewelries and weapons. Nothing is too small to be noticed to him. What he cannot ethically take (such as from graves) or cant take at all (such as paintings or etchings in mountainsides) he sketches in a packed journal. He has several filled with drawings, from fabric weaving patterns to jewelry links.

@a-captions-blog
Let us be very clear: Hamas breached international law on the 7th of October. Hamas targeted innocent civilians in the most callous and inhumane manner, and their actions have been rightly condemned by right thinking people across the world.
But we should also be very clear, Israel has breached international law, not just every day since October the 7th, but virtually every single day for decades.
Israel occupies Palestinian land, against international law.
Israel blockades Palestinian territory, against international law.
Israel builds and expands illegal settlements, against international law.
Israel enforces an apartheid system that restricts the movements of Palestinians and denies their fundamental rights, against international law.
And Israel regularly and systematically attacks and kills Palestinian civilians, against international law.
So the question that must be answered by all of us in political life is this: How does the world respond to flagrant abuses of international law when it comes to the horrendous war crimes of Hamas? The response was very clear and very consistent. World leaders queued up to say Israel has the right to defend itself. One after another repeated their words the great and the good, including our government.
“Israel has the right to defend itself.”
Repeated in statement after statement, tweet after tweet, despite the full knowledge that those words have become contaminated. The words, “Israel has the right to defend itself” means in practice that Israel takes that right as license to bombard civilians, to bomb schools, hospitals and other civilian infrastructure. And it has now been taken as license to enforce the displacement of 1 million people from one end of an open air prison to another. To deny food, energy, medical supplies to a besieged civilian population, to actually deny them water, to ensure that children, the sick, the disabled, the elderly will literally die of thirst.
“Israel has the right to defend itself” has now become cover for, “Israel has the right to commit genocide.”
Right in front of our eyes. How come we never hear the words, “Palestine has the right to defend itself”?
Not when a humanitarian flotilla bringing essential supplies to Gaza is met with a military assault and the murder by Israel of nine unarmed activists.
Not when Palestinians march in peaceful protests against illegal blockade and are met again with a military assault and the murder of 300 of them.
Not after the countless bombings of Gaza by Israeli forces.
Not even when Israel targeted and murdered four little Palestinian boys playing football on a beach.
And not when Palestinians were dragged from their homes and forced to watch as those homes were destroyed to allow for new illegal Israeli settlements on lands that are clearly defined in international law as part of Palestine.
And not after the countless offensive attacks by Israel against the people of Gaza or the West Bank, have we or any heard anybody in this house or any Western leader uttered the words, “Palestine has the right to defend itself.”
And why not?
And by the way, I'm not asking you to say those words. And in fact, it's just as well you don't. Because we all know that the people of Palestine can't defend themselves, not against one of the most powerful military forces in the world that is backed up by even more powerful military forces.
The truth is that the people of Palestine, just like the innocent people of Israel, don't need the international community to tell them that their leaders have the right to inflict more bombings, more pain, more suffering. They need the international community to say, “Stop.” To release the hostages, to say stop the bombings, the siege, the slaughter. They need the international community to tell Israel to stop the blockade, stop the apartheid, stop the annexations, to stop the genocide.
And they need countries tarnished to lead the way. And Ireland should be one of those countries that leads the way.
We know colonialism.
We know oppression.
We know conflict.
But we also know conflict resolution.
We know peace building.
We know nation building.
And because of what we know, what our history has taught us, our call tonight must be clear, immediate, full and unequivocal ceasefire fires and a decisive international intervention that leads to negotiations and to a lasting and just peace settlement and to, at long last, to a free, sovereign and independent Palestine.🇵🇸

Dermot Seymour at Kevin Kavanagh
Tonight, I attended the opening of Dermot Seymour's 'The Nine Primates of Ulster' at the Kevin Kavanagh Gallery, Chancery Lane, Dublin 8. The event began with Dermot conversing with Martin Mackin before answering questions from an audience about his work. Afterwards, the atmosphere was relaxed with plenty of chat.
Each of Dermot's paintings featured the portrait of a different species of money or ape. He did not specify any of these species in the titles of his paintings. The faces and eyes of these animals were painted in sharp expressive detail while their shoulders and background appeared more blurred and abstract. I liked 'Primate of Cavan' and 'Primate of Monaghan' due to their compositions. Dermot's show will run until 12th Oct 2024.

#OTD in 1641 – The Battle of Julianstown | Rory O’More defeated government troops marching to raise the siege of Drogheda.
The Battle of Julianstown was fought during the Irish Rebellion of 1641, at Julianstown near Drogheda, Co Louth in November 1641. The prelude to the planned Siege of Drogheda 1641 by northern counties insurgents led by Sir Phelim O’Neil and supporters from Cavan and Monaghan to lay siege to the strategic garrison, grain store and seaport. Insurgents, during their plan to unsettle English rule in…
