Hypothetical titles for season fourteen of 88

The more things change, the more they stay the same. 35 years ago people in South Carolina were still reeling from Hurricane Hugo. Very strange how people could just go to someone's house to donate (see left column) back then.

I'd never heard of the comic Outland, it was a spinoff of Bloom County that ran only on Sundays. Here is Mortimer Mouse:

I found this Sunday night, and then Monday night, I find out that Pete Rose died! VHS Tapes Old newspapers are magic.

Even in 1989, the clothes in these A&N ads already looked outdated. It was always like this with them. I could pull up a newspaper from 1994, and the clothes would look like the clothes people wore in ... 1989.

ooh, we have a Phar-Mor alert. We were not a Phar-Mor family, we did not visit the mythical store known as Phar-Mor. My mom said that area was too crowded. It was like a giant variety store with a pharmacy, right?

I was nosy, and looks like they broke up in 2001. So the Yorks were trying to gain "custody" of their embryo from a lab in Norfolk (they lived in California). I'm not sure if the couple were successful at having children though.

Oh no! It's our boy David Merritt! We remember him from the August 1, 1993 newspaper entry. Remember, his restaurant didn't open until 1992, and was hyping that it was going to open on April 7, 1990.

No Cathy in this strip, but there are Fax jokes. Remember faxing in your lunch order? Onion rolls seem so old skool, I feel like I remember seeing them at the bakery at the grocery store when I was a real little kid, and then never again. Is it a regional thing? Do people not eat onion rolls in Hampton Roads anymore?

Garfield was upsetting that day.

OH I almost forgot. Speaking of upsetting:

A man on his bike was hit by a car down the street from the newspaper offices. So just you know, walk down the street and take a photo of it and put it on the front page of the local section. I hope Allen was ok. The McDonalds where it happened is long gone, but the building remains.

So the day I went to publish this, I had to take the long way home from Suffolk, and I drove by this intersection on my way to the James River Bridge. Old newspapers ARE magic.

I know we make jokes about certain people putting raisins in potato salad, but what about raisins in your chicken.

I love the names of these raisin recipes! Silk Stockings?! Model T?! I would try a lil bite of each of these.

I can't remember where I mentioned this place, but it amuses me SO MUCH that back in the day you could go to Coliseum Mall and buy steaks.

wait. Bryers made jelly? I wonder if that's the same fruit that was in that yogurt they used to make that was so good. Breyers ice cream is soo bad now.

!! This was my friend Paul's mom! I about flipped when I saw this. This is exactly how five year old me remembers her. She would give me rides to school sometimes in her old jeep and would pick my mom up for room mothers.

Finally, this Eastern Airlines ad is beautiful. They had about a year and a half left, closed in 1991.

Subaru: Gah, frustrating! I guess you were a bitter fit for that song, Sally~.

Mao: Haha, sorry, Subaru. I can’t afford to lose either, you know.

Now that dang mirror ball’s outta the way. The food and drinks are kind of a mishmash of things still, but things are coming together. It’s starting to look somewhat like a ball, I guess?

Subaru: I’m not satisfied, though… What’s wrong with the mirror ball?

Alrighty then, if you’re gonna block my path, Sally~, then let’s settle it with another “showdown”!

Mao: I said quit it. We’re just gonna go in circles with this.

Well, you’re why we’re where we are now, Subaru, since you started out with a controversial opinion.

Y’know the McDonald’s theory, I think it was called…? If you suggest the least feasible idea, hamburgers, to a group of people who are stumped on what to have for lunch, those who aren’t in the mood for hamburgers will offer up all sorts of suggestions.

Subaru: That theory’s just plain disrespectful!

Mao: Well, guess you’re not wrong. I like burgers too, and the theory really is a cruel one, but…

Even so, I understand why there are standards out there. Thanks to your initiative, the participant’s ideas of their “Best Ball” have become clearer.

So despite the contests for even the most trivial details, it’s starting to look like that fairy-tale-esque ball we’ve been imagining now, isn’t it?

Subaru: Well, that is true. It’s starting to take form, yeah.

It’s far from my idea of a “best ball”, though. I’d like it if everyone could make it more sparkly, but oh well…

Let’s work together, Cathy~! ♪

Tsukasa: Why me?

Please look at the bigger picture, Akehoshi-senpai. As the “portrait contest” made clear, you and I’s ideas are completely incompatible.

No—this issue extends past just you and I. Within this Prince Castle, two primary forces are emerging.

Subaru: Huh? Really? Know anything about this, Sally~?

Mao: Well, it’s obvious to most people. After one “showdown” after another throughout the day, you’ll start to take notice of exactly who is giving what order.

Subaru and I too are becoming rivals.

Tsukasa: That’s right. The venue is now divided into two major forces of disorder and order—Chaos and Cosmos.

Cosmos being the force attempting to recreate the “universal ball” seen amongst fairy tales and the nobility, like Isara-senpai and myself.

And Chaos being the force aiming for a “never-seen-before ball”, with those like Akehoshi-senpai and Leo-san.

Which side is the correct one however, is for the judges to decide, so I will not comment on that. But, they are in natural conflict.

Subaru: Wow~. How do you guys pay such close attention?

But based on how it sounds, the Chaos side doesn’t sound all too cooperative, huh?

Mao: Seems to be the case. It seems the members of that group are each dedicated to what they each want to do. Each of them are just firing off orders as they think of them—no sense of unity at all.

That’s also the reason the Order side is the predominant force, despite there being hard-hitters like you and Tsukinaga-senpai on the Chaos side.

Tsukasa: That’s Teamwork for you.

It is exactly as Nice-san has said. By bringing everyone together towards a unified direction, we can move forward towards the “Best Ball” at a rapid pace.

Subaru: Really? I don’t think that’s the case, though.

Tsukasa: ? Are you trying to lead me astray, Akehoshi-senpai?

I won’t fall for that. This many participants would not be able to come together if it weren’t for Cosmos.

Subaru: No, it’s not that. I mean that the Cosmos side isn’t unified either.

Maybe the rules had been established with this in mind? That’s just a hunch, though.

Tsukasa: Hm… What is it you mean by that…?

Subaru: Sorry, it’s just a hunch of mine, so don’t take it too seriously. Like, a part of me is just thinking, “I wish that were the case~”.

Anyway, we should think about the next order! There’s still a ton of essential stuff we gotta figure out for the ball, isn’t there?

What we have so far is the lighting, and a portion of the food, and the drinks…

What the music to dance to will be, where the dancing will be and by who, and who will be invited and for what purpose—I don’t think we’ve figured out anything like that.

Even without the Chaos side to contribute, I have a feeling it’ll become even more chaotic once it comes to judging.

Those who are on the Cosmos side might also become on the Chaos side when that time comes.

Mao: That’s true. The most important thing we'll have to show the judges is the eventual “Best Ball”.

The genre of song will also influence the dance. Even the idols who are keeping to themselves now will be up for a “showdown” if it means being able to use their best choreography for the dance.

Tsukasa: So the judging for Prince Castle has only just begun, huh.

Come to think of it, I feel that Leo-san has been rather quiet today. Perhaps he’s evaluating the trends of the Audition program? That’d be surprising…

Leo: Done!! This’ll do!

Tsukasa: Huh?

Leo: I’ve thought up ballroom music for the “Best Ball”! Twelve of them!

Tsukasa: T-Twelve? How did you find the time to make something like this?!

Leo: I don’t wanna be underestimated too much~! ♪ I’m a genius composer, so this much is easy peasy!

I’ll be decidin’ who and what this ball is held for!

The Rising Popularity of Chick-Fil-A

Best known for its mouth-watering chicken sandwich, Chick-fil-A is dominating the fast-food industry in the United States. In 2018, Chick-fil-A generated $4.6M in average unit volume. Competitive advantage plays a vital role in the fast-food chain’s success. Chick-fil-A has a sustainable competitive advantage against its competitors because it provides superior customer service and high-quality products. In my opinion, I have never had a bad experience in one of its restaurants due to the delicious food and friendly employees. 

Competitors including Popeye’s and McDonald’s are trying to compete with Chick-fil-A by releasing new crispy chicken sandwiches. A competitive advantage these chains have against Chick-fil-A is that both have locations worldwide. Chick-fil-A only operates in the United States, which puts the restaurant at a disadvantage. However, in March 2023, the Wall Street Journal published that Chick-fil-A plans to expand into Asia and Europe in the coming years. 

Although sales are terrific in the United States, CEO Andrew Cathy wants to expand internationally to keep up with competitors. Looking at the product-market growth matrix (see image below), this business plan would be considered market expansion. Market expansion is when companies sell existing products to new markets. I believe this is a brilliant idea because it has the potential for Chick-fil-A to generate millions, and possibly billions, of revenue in the future. I am excited to see the fast-food chain’s growth outside of the United States over the next few years. 

Something all Chick-fil-A fans know is that its restaurants are closed on Sundays. This is because CEO Andrew Cathy is Christian and wants Chick-fil-A to pause business for God. Something I am wondering is: Will Chick-fil-A keep this rule when it expands internationally?

The Fae Folk were unique in an ever-growing plethora of ways, having been bestowed gifts and punishments by the Mother Below as they lived and loved and made a million little mistakes. 

A consequence for once such faux pas had the children of Her light stripped of the ability to spin dishonesties, their silver tongues weighed down by iron to mitigate the pandemonium borne from their tall tales. Most, if not all, of them had never told a lie without repercussion, and the ones that crossed the veil were drowning in confusion over a world that thrived in its untruths.

Movies and other media were an odd thing then, a string of fantastical realisms woven together for entertainment. And you know what? Esmeray had very much been one of the entertained, hanging off of an actor’s every word in whatever movie they’d decided to watch for the night— she had to give him credit for all his patience, with the way she’d interrupt a movie a thousand times with different questions about the human condition.

She liked the impractical parts the most, wherein these humans went through convoluted means to reach very simple ends. Like a Faerie climbing up a trellis to her husband’s bedroom window instead of the more pragmatic option. These films equated unfeasibility with romance, and who better than a Fae to do something so ridiculously backwards? 

It didn’t take her very long either, crocheted bag slung over her shoulder, filled to the brim with whatever she’d thought could bring Connor some levity. Some joy. 

Esme had stopped by the bullseye emporium beforehand, raiding the isles for whatever items made her think of her husband, some wooden skewers and a ton of other things she’d need for a little DIY project. A nearby McDonalds was next on her journey and the smell of it turned her stomach— but it’d been her decision to date a beautiful, carnivorous thing. The foul smells of fast food restaurants weren’t of much consequence if they brought a smile to his face. 

Cresting the top of the trellis, she pressed a hand against what she hoped was the right window ( Cathy Talbot, was a visit for another day ), and pulled it upwards until there was enough room to stick her head through. There he was in all his grounded glory, “loveling, I have done the arrivings,” she whispered.

Claiming that they invented the chicken sandwich in the 1940s, Chick-fil-A, which is an Atlanta-based fast food restaurant founded by Samuel Truett Cathy, was probably the first to put a fried chicken sandwich on a fast food menu. And certainly that is no small thing as fast food was mostly filled with burgers and fries at the time.

Slowly and without a lot of fanfare, the 1980s and 90s brought the chicken sandwich to Burger King, McDonald’s, and Kentucky. But just a few decades later, the competition has gotten fierce and fried chicken sandwiches have become all the rage in fast food.

In fact, during the so-called “Chicken Sandwich Wars” of summer 2019, Popeye’s and Chick-fil-A had a rather large rivalry on Twitter, resulting in shortages and lines of people out the door waiting to try the new Popeye’s fried chicken sandwich. Even Taco Bell took its turn at introducing a chicken sandwich, which seems like quite a stretch!

I’m back! Time for-- 

TPOB Chapter 2, Part 3 

Diana noted the recorder was sitting on the blotter in front of him. She'd have to grab it before Father squirreled it away somewhere, alongside Hanlon's ledger. I love the Father squirrel descriptors, always. 

"Even good people can be led astray, Mouse," Vincent responded gently. "All of us are vulnerable to our own demons. They can make us behave in ways we never thought ourselves capable of." Excellent quote-- excellent. And Diana catching Cullen’s reaction to it-- the details. 

Diana reasoning with everyone about the lockdown, Vincent escorting her to bed, and her all-purpose wave… I (again) adore how you craft her, Vincent, and the community. It feels right out of a BATB episode. 

Brooke watching after baby Jacob… don’t know why, but it got me right *points* here. 

Vincent just dropped in later and shared the bed. o.o And he didn’t make a big deal of it. O.o (Like the McDonalds ads, I’m Lovin’ It) And the ensuing scene: O.O 

Diana and Vincent being comfortable enough with each other to joke about it, too, is MAGNIFICENT. 

Her second awakening of the day wasn't as physically pleasant, but it was nice just the same. This time it was a chubby knee in her stomach and a little hand patting determinedly at her cheek. JACOB’S HERE, MY HEART. 

Diana looking forward to seeing Vincent and Elliot/Stosh interact with each other-- me, too, Diana, me, too. 

She swung her legs over the side of the bed and spotted her clothes neatly folded in Vincent's big chair, her trench coat slung over the back. From the looks of it, the boot fairy had also taken the time to put a fresh polish on her Fryes while she'd slept. And Diana and Vincent locking horns over the privacy issue until Diana figures him out and Vincent sees she’s figured him out and SHE sees he’s seen that she’s figured him out-- perfection. 

Or a night spent in Father's study, Jacob on her lap and Vincent standing beside her chair, secretly amused as she whipped the tar out of Father at Scrabble while trying to keep the baby from stealing all her tiles. I am going to send this passage and its paragraph to Sis because I know she’ll love it. 

 "You want anything, something to drink? I made sun tea today, how about that?" SUN TEA, heheheheheheh. 

Diana’s Van Morrison to Cathy’s classical-- I love the dichotomy. What I valued about Diana as a follow up to Cathy was that she understood Cathy, respected her legacy/impact, but more importantly was different than her and didn’t try to erase those differences. Also, that she didn’t try to grab Vincent’s attention in the opposite direction, blatantly highlighting their differences as an insecure “I’M DIFFERENT” wanna be love interest. Hers and Vincent’s was very… adult, I suppose, compared to the whimsical innocency (in a way) that he had with Cathy; and that was perfect for Vincent after all the trauma that had piled and piled on his shoulders. 

Diana assuring Vincent he can be selfish with her-- lovely~~~. 

Stosh the pirate sighting! Also-- "Oh, Stosh," he murmured unhappily, "you've lost a leg." "Eh, only half of one. Still getting used to the prosthetic."-- that’s so you, that’s so Elliot. 

Diana not being used to Elliot’s heart-on-his-sleeve emotions while Vincent and he take it in stride… it’s the little character moments that get me. 

Going to rip a passage of yours because it, too, touches on the insecurities that you and Nan drew out of Diana as a character: 

"Love is not something to be measured. It simply is. To compare one love to another is to dishonor all love, for it is something boundless and immeasurable… and requires no comparisons. Catherine's love was a gift… to both of us. It is to be treasured, as any gift should be. Not with an eye to examine it, one love against another, but simply with an open heart to receive it, in whatever its form… and be glad of it. That is what Catherine would want… for both of us. So let us not discuss this further. You may trust that my words are true and are said with much affection to someone I consider my friend. I can only hope you feel as I do and will know there is nothing to be forgiven."

Diana took that moment to rise from the armchair, wiping away a tear of her own. Vincent looked up at her from the corner of his eye, seeking her acknowledgement that his declaration wasn't meant just for Stosh. She knew he had to have felt in her, from time to time and when she was feeling less than worthy, a sadness that she might never be as important to him as Catherine had been. Or that their love for each other would never quite measure up to what he'd shared with Catherine. 

There was a heartfelt moment and then this cracked me up: She made herself useful, grabbing a box of tissues from the desk…. Perhaps I am easily amused~. ;))))

She glanced at Stosh just then and found his eyes moving inquisitively between the two of them. She caught his look and held it, open to whatever her challenge might provoke him to do or say. There was a beat before Stosh scrubbed his mouth, covering a secret smile, and cocked an eyebrow at her in response. It’s NOT funny, but it is a little: just imagining Elliot Burch dropping back in after going through who knows what for how many months, drops tears over Catherine, hears a beautiful speech from Vincent, then catches Vincent getting his hair ruffled by Diana. His reaction is, again, perfection. This also made me chuckle: If Vincent had taken any notice of what had just passed between them, he made no indication of it. But, of course, that meant nothing. Vincent was the poster child for playing things close to the vest when he wanted to.

Vincent giving Elliot a hug to ultimately suss him out while being overwrought and sensitive to touch is… touching, in a way (heh), but also could be desperation. A very unique moment. And Diana (of course) figuring out what he’s doing is classic Diana, classic.

Let me say this first, so those who may be scrolling down might see it right up front, above the cut. TPOB has been available online for going on 12 years, and has been largely ignored. Your ongoing comments as you read it are the first real validation I've received. I haven't felt this sort of support for my BATB fanfics since Nan died. And just in case you're not sure, that's a big deal to me. Huge, in fact. I didn't write this hoping that everyone in the BATB fandom would love it and tell me so. This was just a story I had to get out. But even so, the silence it was met with was discouraging. So, thanks for reassuring me that maybe I did know what I was doing when I sat down to write this. ❤️

It feels right out of a BATB episode. 

That's the holy grail, baby! The grand prize. Nothing a fanfic writer wants to hear more.

Vincent just dropped in later and shared the bed. o.o And he didn’t make a big deal of it. O.o (Like the McDonalds ads, I’m Lovin’ It) And the ensuing scene: O.O 

Diana and Vincent being comfortable enough with each other to joke about it, too, is MAGNIFICENT. 

Thank you. Very intentional on my part and it plays in to something you said a little farther down about V & D's relationship being very adult. Because it mirrors something that Nan said to me when I sent her the first fics I wrote. And that was that my writing was for grownups, whose take on love might tend to be wry and realistic, rather than dripping with hearts and flowers. That was always my intent because, let's face it, V & D are both adults and are a bit beaten up and world-weary. So, so much of the BATB fanfic out there is almost nauseatingly romantic, and based on the "lots of cleavage and bare-chested men" romance paperbacks so popular back in the day. That's not me, and that's not how I see them. Which probably explains why I so fell in love with Nan and her writing. She got me.

"You want anything, something to drink? I made sun tea today, how about that?" SUN TEA, heheheheheheh. 

No catnip this time, though. 😆 There are very intentional callbacks to Nan's fics, especially the AWTN series, sprinkled throughout TPOB. This, more than anything else I've written, was an unapologetic tribute to her and the lessons she imparted to me.

It’s NOT funny, but it is a little: just imagining Elliot Burch dropping back in after going through who knows what for how many months, drops tears over Catherine, hears a beautiful speech from Vincent, then catches Vincent getting his hair ruffled by Diana. His reaction is, again, perfection.

But Elliot gets it, in large part because of the speech from Vincent. When I told you in our previous discussion that this was most definitely a love story, I didn't just mean romantically. It's a story about love in all its forms.
