Poem dedicated to Hermann Hesse. Written 4-8-22.

Trippingly, we danced

And flowed

And turned

Our delicate minds towards the future

That distant, sunlit land

With towering spires

Filled with singing

And unspoken thoughts

Shadows of notes,

Music more precious than gold,

Hang in the air

Showing us ourselves

All of this lived

In that ancient city of the future

And my heart lives there,

too

~ The Stream ~ 3-song “suite” drops in one week, concluding my releases for the year and bringing the total to a tidy 7, with a runtime of over 33 minutes… Hope you enjoy this introductory EP, before the full album is released in 2023! The first song from the new set I’d like to talk about is Glass Bead Game. Inspired by the Hermann Hesse novel and drawing on other generally Buddhist themes (which are shared by the other two songs in the suite), the tune is the latest in a practice of mine where I write about the lead character, and attempt to crystallize some moments from a great book. I’ll often use actual lines from the story, and pay tribute to their beauty by singing them. I’m not sure if this is considered plagiarism… Probably. Perhaps laziness, perhaps fascination with minds and stories more interesting than my own. I consider it an hommage, as well as a comment on the inter-relationship and reciprocity of the different arts and disciplines (which is also a principal theme of the book). Another example of this approach, where I do the exact same thing, is my tune “Devil’s Chapter,” based on East of Eden. (In fact based on just one chapter, Chapter 33). As for The Glass Bead Game (the book), I could go on and on about what it means to me and what I think it reflects from the world. But for this VERY BRIEF post I’ll just say that literature has played a huge role in my life, and naturally, in my writing... Thanks for listening to my songs, December 2! ~ The Stream (Suite) ~ drips/drops tonight at midnight EST/9PM PST! Thanks so much for your support, it feels like it’s been a long-ass journey and I’m only halfway through presenting my album. I’m really proud of the way it sounds track 1 thru 7, and that’s what I encourage everyone to do: listen to the playlist on my Spotify entitled “Revisions EP.” It’s a major preview of the sound and vision… but there’s still more to come! “The Stream” is the title track and one of three songs which bear similar themes, tonalities and inspirations: the Natural World, especially Water and some Buddhist symbolism around it, namely its habit of “seeking the lowest level.” The song is the most impressionistic of the 3, and also the simplest, musically speaking. I wanted to emulate and even use sounds from nature in this piece about water. Aside from Glass Bead Game, which I’ve already talked about, the other song in the suite is called “What Else?”— Based on a series of questions, it’s basically asking: why must we always ask for more than what we’ve got? Presented with nearly unlimited creative energy, we sidetrack ourselves with sensualism and greed, always asking “what else is there?” while staring directly at it.
