‘Children Of Blood And Bone’ Film Adaptation Sets Principal Cast And Release Date

Gina Prince-Bythewood‘s movie adaptation of Children of Blood and Bone has found its principle cast in Thuso Mbedu as Zelie, Amandla Stenberg as Amari, Damson Idris as Inan and Tosin Cole as Tzain.

Also confirmed are Viola Davis as Mama Agba; Cynthia Erivo as Admiral Kaea; Idris Elba as Lekan; Lashana Lynch as Jumoke; and Chiwetel Ejiofor as King Saran.

In negotiations are Regina King as Queen Nehanda; Diaana Babnicova as Folake; and Bukky Bakray as Binta.

The film is based on the bestselling novel of the same name by Tomi Adeyemi. The story is set in an African fantasy kingdom in which a young woman goes on a quest to reclaim the magic that was violently stolen from her people. She and her brother ally with the daughter and son of the king to fight back against his brutal rule.

The movie releases January 15, 2027 in IMAX. Production is set to begin filming in South Africa in the coming weeks. [x]

I see you've listened to Re-Slayer's Take, and I wondered if you had any thoughts you want to share, particularly regarding the editing choice to cut out non-character/ non-in-world talk and interactions, as well as the inclusion of DM PCs.

I'm enjoying it, but it definitely took a lot of getting used to.

If you don't feel like you have anything particular to say, that's totally cool too!

It did take some time to get used to! I think the editing choices make sense for what it is - they want it to be relatively short so that younger listeners won't get bored. As someone who's listened to a lot of actual play, including less-edited podcasts that cut episodes at about an hour, I think that's a good idea, because your options even for shows that are edited but include table talk (D20, NADDPod, TAZ, Rusty Quill Gaming, Worlds Beyond Number, Burnt Cookbook Party, etc) are limited to "2 hour episodes" or "it takes 5 months to finish a minor sidequest." I also think that quite young children might struggle with the in character vs out of character divide, especially since not everyone is doing that intense a voice.

I like the DM PCs here! Some of it is just that it's necessary given the classes the party chose, plus it means that Timpani can transport them quickly, and Poogs is just fun and helpful. I think the other consideration for all ages is that like, you really don't want a death spiral sort of combat, and having DM PCs is a good way to prevent that.

Basically I think it's very good for what it is intending to be. My preference is definitely for longer works with table talk and worldbuilding digressions, but I am also an adult who's been a big fan of this medium for 7 years, and making a show that is accessible and entertaining to a child while still being engaging enough for adults who are already down to listen to 4 hour episodes is really hard, and they succeeded!
