Diego had been auditioning for movie roles for years, always hoping for that one break that would make him a star. But reality was harsh—he never landed any part. Each rejection hit him harder than the last, and his next audition would be his final chance. If he didn’t make it, his parents would force him to return to his small hometown, where dreams of acting felt impossible.

But this casting was different. A new movie starring Brad Pitt, his idol, was being shot in his city. That gave Diego hope. If he could get even the smallest role, he might seize the opportunity to learn and maybe, just maybe, become someone in the industry.

The day of the audition came, and Diego nervously but excitedly delivered his monologue with everything he had. In his mind, he was doing great. But the harsh reality struck when the casting director instantly rejected him.

Heartbroken, Diego stepped outside, tears filling his eyes. This had been his last shot. He sat down in a corner, closed his eyes, and let the despair wash over him. But suddenly, a woman’s voice pulled him out of his sorrow.

“Mr. William Bradley Pitt?” the voice asked.

Diego opened his eyes, confused. The room around him seemed to change, as though time itself was rewinding to the 1980s. He looked around, noticing how the walls and decor looked like something out of that era. Everything had a surreal, dreamlike quality.

“Excuse me, Mr. Pitt,” the voice repeated, “I just wanted to inform you that you’ve been cast in 21 Jump Street. Congratulations!”

“Wait, me?” Diego responded, not recognizing the voice that came out of his mouth. He touched his throat, startled by the unfamiliar tone. What was happening?

The woman smiled and left, leaving him in a daze. Desperate for answers, Diego looked for a bathroom. As he wandered the halls, he realized that everyone around him was dressed in '80s clothing. At first, he thought it must be a film set for a period piece, but something felt off.

Finally, he found a bathroom and rushed to wash his face. But when he looked into the mirror, he froze. The reflection staring back at him wasn’t his own. It was the face of a young Brad Pitt—blond hair, blue eyes, and the same age as Diego, 23.

“What the hell…?” he whispered, stunned.

His mind raced. Had he switched bodies? Had he traveled through time? Now, somehow, he was Brad Pitt, the rising actor at the start of his career. Diego couldn’t believe it, but soon realized that this was his chance to become the star he’d always dreamed of being. After all, he already knew what Brad’s future held.

Over time, Diego, in Brad’s body, made the most of every opportunity. He fought for the right roles, made key decisions in Brad’s career, and ensured his path to fame was even more successful than in the original timeline. Iconic films like Fight Club and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button still became part of his career, but there were some aspects Diego decided to change.

One of the biggest changes was in his personal life. Instead of following Brad Pitt’s original romantic path, Diego chose to live more authentically. The relationship with Angelina Jolie never happened. Instead, Diego, as Brad, explored his true identity and eventually married George Clooney. His life, both personally and professionally, took an entirely different and unexpected direction.

Diego’s old life faded away. Now, he was Brad Pitt, an alternate version of the star, living a life and career he had never imagined. But in the end, he achieved what he had always wanted—to be a Hollywood star, even if it was in someone else’s body.

And, in his own way, he found happiness in this new life, in a world that would never be the same.

As the rain poured relentlessly on the darkened street, you and Natasha sat in the inconspicuous black sedan, parked across from the abandoned warehouse. The mission was simple: observe and gather intel on a suspicious arms deal that was rumoured to go down tonight. However, things weren't going as smoothly as planned. The chilly night air seeped through the car's cracked windows, making the atmosphere even more unbearable as the rain rattled against the windshield. 

Natasha had been uncharacteristically quiet throughout the entire stakeout, staring out the window without saying a word. Something was up with her. If you didn’t know better, it was almost as if she was functioning on autopilot. Normally she’d be reading over files or making use of her time in another way but today she was different. 

Thinking about it, she’d seemed off all day. You’d remembered seeing her spacing out frequent during your debriefing seemingly unable to concentrate. 

As you watched her from the corner of your eye, you noticed her shivering slightly despite the car's heating system running on full blast. The dim interior of the sedan made it difficult to see her clearly, but the subtle signs of discomfort were unmistakable. She sniffled softly, and then, without warning, she let out a series of suppressed sneezes. 

“Hhh’itshoo! ...Hh’tshu!” 

Oh. That’s why she seemed so spacey. “Bless you.” Your murmured quietly, trying to keep the concern out of your voice. You couldn’t miss the way jumped slightly at the sound of your voice, almost as if she hadn't realised you were there despite the pair of you sitting then than a few inches away. Natasha turned towards you, her face pale and tired, the dim light revealing dark circles under her eyes. She gave you a weak smile before casting her eyes back to the warehouse out front. 

“You alright there baby?” You asked calmly, keeping your gaze adverted, you knew if you asked outright, she’d get all defensive and grouchy - a grumpy Natasha was certainly not someone you wanted to deal with on a stakeout. 

She muttered something under her breath as she sank back against her seat, “I’m fine.” Her sentence was followed by a soft sniffle which had you looking over her, worry nestled behind in your gaze. She certainly didn’t look fine. 

Her eyelids were drooping, and her head kept nodding forward before she jerked it back upright. It was clear she was fighting a losing battle against exhaustion. Eventually she seemed to settle, and you couldn’t help but look over curiously to see her eyes closed as her head rested against her shoulder – an awful position that was bound to make her wake up stiff if she stayed like that.  

 You reached over and placed a hand on her forehead, shaking your head as you felt her shivering skin, "You're freezing Natasha," you sighed softly to yourself, “Poor girl, there’s a nice warm bubble bath in your future I reckon.” 

You must’ve been mumbling a little too loudly however as your girlfriend stirred beneath your touch, slowly bringing her hands up to her eyes and rubbing at them sleepily, “Mmh don’t want a bath.” 

The concern in your voice was undeniable as you gently stroked her hair, your hand still on her forehead. "You don't want a bath, huh? Well, how about a warm cup of tea when we get out of here, and then you can decide?" 

Natasha mumbled something unintelligible, her voice still groggy from drowsiness. Her defences were down in her half-asleep state, and she seemed more vulnerable than usual. 

"You've been pushing yourself too hard lately," you said softly, your thumb caressing her cheek. "We both know you’ve not been sleeping well. I don’t think staying here is going to do you any good. There's no use being here if you’re too out of it to stay alert. It's not safe baby.” 

She blinked blearily, her tired eyes struggling to focus on you. "But the intel... the arms deal..." 

"We've gathered what we can for now, we'll report back, and the team can analyse it.” You reached over and gently placed a hand on her upper thigh, squeezing it gently when she coughed into her elbow again, "We should’ve stayed home baby. This can’t have come on this fast. When did you feel this crap kicking in, hm?” You asked, as you turned on the engine and began pulling out of your parking spot. 

As you eased the car away from the abandoned warehouse, Natasha leaned back in her seat, her eyes still heavy with fatigue. She let out a long sigh, her voice raspy from the grasp of a sore throat. "I started feeling like this earlier today, but I thought I could tough it out. Guess I was wrong." 

You continued to drive, making your way towards home. "You're too stubborn, you know that?" you said with a gentle smile, “Bath and bed and snuggles for you when we get home.” 

“But if you stay then you’ll get sick too, I can sleep in the-” She began to object but you cut her off with a soft kiss. 

“Then so be it.”

Naruto Headcanons – Music/TV Taste in Different Villages

GALAXY BRAIN ASK STRIKED AGAIN!!! Today we will into what music/TV would be popular in each villages. Of course, each villages have diversity but just like in the real world, some things are more popular than others depending on the locations.

As a music head, I’m feeling this! Have fun with the music references, don’t be afraid to go listen to them. LETS GOO!

Are there any Music Charts/Billboard?: Each country has its chart system because each nation's taste varies a lot, hence why it is such an achievement to become relevant in a city or country outside of your own. It’s only recently that artists started going on real WORLD tours (if you exclude Itachi’s Fan meeting, you probably could count them on your hands’ fingers).  

Regardless, Konoha holds the largest music festivals. The annual Summer Music-Fest assembles the most diverse cast of artists from around the world meanwhile the largest venue ever built is in Kumo (a stadium with 90,000+ of capacity)

For the first time, a world music awards ceremony was held in Kumo but it was heavily criticized for its favoritism towards bigger nations.

KONOHA----------------------------------------------------

KONAHA’S MUSIC TASTE:

Konoha is insanely into celebrity culture. It was kinda established by Naruto and his grandiose accomplishments during past wars, where it further spread the concept of hero/celebrity/idol/person adored by a large crowd.

Taking after their beloved founder Hashirama Senju, Konoha loooves an unproblematic singer with a fiery personality leaning towards an upbeat musical style that appeals to masses.

When I say they love someone unproblematic, I mean it. It applies to most A-List celebrities, singers, actors & etc. Their PR team operates 24/7 at an unmatched level. Talking about politics or any controversial topics is heavily restricted, hence why those who build fandoms overseas escape the censorship and have their damage control team back them up no matter what happens. Itachi is the PERFECT example of this.   

The village conserves its conservative mentality since it is way more comfortable with female performers. It’s that binary thinking where men are ninjas/at war and women are better perceived in “softer” careers.

Konoha loves bubble gum commercial pop, especially in a girl group format.

As the city evolved, you can see art academies opening to encourage the youth towards the world of entertainment (We are in a time of peace, so more career paths are available) but it’s not going to stop them from making concepts like a shinobi boy group.

Keeping their malpractice from the shinobi world, underage idols debuting in groups is not common but heavily normalized.

KONOHA’S MOVIE/TV TASTE:

Konoha is a pioneer of the comedy genre in movies. The most recognizable comedy films, franchises, and actors are from the Country of Fire (Speed Hour is one of them) but IRL it would be something like 21 Jump Street and Freaky Friday.

Actions movies painting an “heroic” narrative. They are a sucker for ninja movies especially those reenacting past events with a shit load of misinformation like downplaying the violence or certain wars. NO! The victory was not as spectacular. Stop lying, please.

Puppy love Romance movies & Drama TV series (The Korean Drama type)

Night talk shows (like The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon) are really popular along with Konoha’s Saturday Night Live but got temporary cancelled after they clowned Gaara for being soft and a “born again” pacifist. Suna took them to court over the joke and the trial is ongoing. Really ironic, because all the “jokes” about the Tsuchikage’s height or men from Kiri being gang members with massive schlongs didn’t bother anyone… oh…ok.

KUMO-------------------------------------------------------

KUMO’S MUSIC TASTE:

Rap & Hip hop are the country’s musical pride since it sets them apart from other nations with their own billboard systems. They depends on other countries the least because they are musically self-sustained (compared to Konoha who constantly take in outside influences) and yes all these large venues fill themselves without outsiders.

MCing and 90’s style Rap is a style popularized by Killer Bee; he basically monopolizes the genre.

Soul & Disco remained popular since this music is associated with the Raikage’s generation.

If the beat is good, you have a chance but don’t go too far because permanent cancellation is a thing in Kumo.

Every year, many artists get together to make an end-of-the-year song under Killer Bee’s record label (Kanye West - All of the Light)

Kumo loves a female soloist, they go crazy over singers like Rihanna, Fergie, Missy Elliot, Doechii, Janet Jackson, Beyonce, SZA, Nicki Minaj, Chungha, etc…

Even if Killer Bee dominates the Rap scene, they would love male rappers like Kanye West and Busta Rhymes.

Contrary to popular belief, mumble and drill rap is not as popular as people make it out to be. It is subject to a lot of mockery in Kumo so most rappers using this style rely on their fandoms overseas.

The northern region of the Country of Lightning houses a whole different language and heritage. They tend to stay isolated from the rest of the population because the area is made of chains of massive mountains. They are distantly related to the Raikage’s lineage. They also carry their own unique cultural sound, who sometimes makes its way into the mainstream.

KUMO’S MOVIE/TV TASTE:

Reality TV is dominated by Kumo and Iwa. They are both sides of the same coin and produces the most known franchises in the world. Kumo focuses more on Drama among citizens, Music reality TV, Romance, and all the lives of the out-of-the-norm people in their country. Think of the entire TLC Channel, Big Brother, Real Housewives of Kumogakure, Bad Girls Club/Baddies, Courtroom Drama/Judge Judy

Reality TV about food (Master Chef & The Great Baking Show) and The Voice have editions in each large country except Kiri.

Drag Races are only in Konoha and Kumo because shows like these are illegal in Suna & Kiri and got canceled in Iwa.

Kumo, Konoha & Iwa hosted their annual seasons of Love Island with great success.

The movie scene in Kumo is pretty small compared to the rest of its entertainment industry. Unfortunately, it’s dominated by heroes and historical movies.

SUNA--------------------------------------------------------

SUNA’S MUSIC TASTE:

Vocalists are prized in Suna. There’s nothing more acclaimed than an angelic voice. Think of Adele, Indila, Christina Aguilera & Jon Secada

Classical music is a dedicated art form. It’s no joke. The biggest classical theaters are in Suna. Those who desire to study various string and wind instruments travel to the Country of Wind where the best classical music teachers are located.

Suna’s club music is sooo underrated, some people (outsiders) believe it doesn’t even exist due to the prevalence of live performing bands and orchestras. It would be similar in style to artists like Nelly Furtado & Nyusha. Their electro music is extremely popular in clubs in Konoha and people have no idea it’s made by artists from the country of Wind. Yep, you guessed it. IRL it’s 90s-2000s Eurodance.

SUNA’S MOVIE/TV TASTE:

TV shows/drama series taking place in a huge mansion with dramatic transitions/character introductions are very popular

Going on that same point, movies about family drama/dysfunction are popular as well because many recognize their relatives in the characters or use this media to reprimand their family members (don’t be like ----- from ------ series). Suna is probably on their 20th season of Shameless.

A large part of the population has never traveled outside of the Country of Wind so documentaries about other nations are well-liked and sometimes used for propaganda.

For some reason, all of Suna’s TV is super duper HD but their national news broadcast has to be the lowest quality and cheapest setup known to man.

KIRI’S MUSIC TASTE:

Because of its diverse population, what’s popular depends on social class & ethnicity/clan. Due to environmental & economic circumstances, gang-related rap music grew in popularity. Tying back to the heavy influence of gang culture, it appears in music and fashion whether the group has criminal affiliations or not. The underground rap scene is very prolific and generated many iconic groups and soloists but is also associated with many violent tragedies

The rise of female singers revolutionized society as Kiri started promoting their unique expression of beauty & sexuality to the outside world. Unfortunately, the pressure to appeal to the male gaze is insane. It is still a male-dominated society in contrast to Kumo’s support (and admiration) of female independence and individual self-expression, in Kiri, female performers can catch hell for “covering too much”, and not wearing makeup and heels.

I’m telling you! Female singers have mastered the art of a catchy song with a saxophone riff+ vain lyrics = INSTANT HIT (basically 2009-2011 Alexandra Stan)

Vocal-based boybands are popular and attract mixed crowds. Many liked them for their trendy style, iconic songs, and success with the ladies. Most of these group sit in style close to groups like Aventura and Boyz II Men.

What’s funny is that for the longest, Kiri was stuck in the early 2000s, when it comes to style, fashion and media production. This is why until very recently, CDs were sold in jewel cases with the most devious album covers.

Artists like Minori Chihara are popular as well, again showing the country's diversity. Their popularity extends to certain regions/islands in the Country of Water but recently many have entered the mainstream giving a diverse sound to Kiri. Either more eccentric than what outsiders would expect or coming from ethnicities/clans previously underrepresented (Haku’s clan is one of them). Some examples are Charli XCX, Wednesday Campanella, Bad Bunny & Flower.

Because of the strong love/couple culture, most forms of partner dancing (and the music associated with them) are really popular. Of course, depending on the region of the country you reside in, but dances including slower movements dominate, a few examples would be Bachata & Kompa.

KIRI’S MOVIE/TV TASTE:

Low-budget soap operas.

For the longest, movies were in black & white, and the drama/romance genre is the most popular than most like to admit but it often depicted members of higher caste. No censorship on the spiciness/love scenes (this is live!)

IWA’S MUSIC TASTE:

Rock is the most popular style of music. It is the most exported media after adventure movies. The genre has brought merit and fame to the Country of Eart and its one-of-a-kind rock festivals. There was a time when pop-punk/rock was dominating. It was in the same era that TAKA flourished, it would be groups like Red Jumpsuit Apparatus, Billy Talent, Paramore, AFI, Hoobastank, etc.). This era was short-lived, and Iwa’s rock eventually returned to its more hardcore roots.

IWA’S MOVIE/TV TASTE:

Adventure/Action movies are filmed there and many popular franchises came out of it (think of Mad Max). These movies always climb to the top of the box office when they are released. (Deidara likes these because there are many explosions)

To rival Rock, Iwa has the largest indie music scene. Because of the lack of funding for anyone not filling the typical rock/metal mold, countless small groups and soloists from underfunded companies or self-employed are so many that they form a whole layer of the country’s music industry. I know groups/singers like Kllo, Cafuné, Glasperlenspiel, The Neighbourhood & JOY. would fit this description.

Iwa’s reality TV is more geared towards anything following celebrities' (& corn stars) lives, Any survival show in the wilderness, Married at first sight, Jersey Shore, Jackass, Real Houswives of Iwagakure.

OTO-------------------------------------------------------------------------

OTO’S MUSIC TASTE:

It is possible that you don’t understand the lyrics of any song because it is a melodic-driven music culture.

The most accomplished and elaborate sound technicians/producers come from there (previously associated with Orochimaru or not).

Because of the village’s association with Konoha, all artists/producers from Oto are popular in Konoha and operate in the Country of Fire.

Meanwhile in Oto, they have perfected the art of sounds, allowing a more intricate/complex musical sound to emerge both in EDM & other electro styles. Going from Yasutaka Nakata (Perfume & capsule) to more layered compositions from artists like Emawk, FKA Twigs

95% of the royalty-free music available online is made in Otogakure.

Ame produces many prolific DJs who range from the generic side of EDM to more eccentric and unique styles. It would be artists like Basshunter, Wolfgang Gartner, Skrillex, deadmaus5 & Rabbit Killer.

AME’S MOVIE/TV TASTE:

Ame produces the most gut-wrenching indie horror movie to see the light of day. Some get popular enough to get broadcast overseas (like The Ring type and even worse). In contrast to Konoha’s horror movies which are locally popular with the typical watered-down storyline. *Ears a strange sound in the attic. Picks up a flashlight to go check*

Hey! If you’re a fan of the 21 Jump Street series (and the movies), I just started a Discord server based around it!

As you probably know, this show has a relatively small fandom, and so I hoped to that by creating this server it would start bringing fans together so that we could chat about it and share a bunch of content too. Every unit needs its chapel, right?

There are channels dedicated to all sorts of aspects of the show, including the cast, headcanons, ships, hot takes, and more! There are also places to talk about off topic things too. Some of the channel names even match the theme of the server.

I have four main roles up so far: rookie, undercover, defective, and chief.

Not sure if anyone cares, but Steven Williams (Rufus in SPN) is going to be in at least one episode of FBI: Most Wanted (I say 'at least' only because the article talks about one ep, but he's playing a cast regular's father so I guess depending on the story there might be a chance he could be back at some point).

just watched 21 jump street and looked up the cast bc thats what i do when i watch movies and found out that there was a tv show also named 21 jump street that the movie was a kinda sorta but not really sequel to the show and that the random cameo with johnny depp at the end was in fact not a random famous comedic actor cameo at all bc he was like the main character in the original tv show and that led me down a weird rabbit hole (incoming pun not intended) and learned about the other cops in that show one of them being Judy Hoffs which if youre like me ur former disney brain immediately connected that to Judy Hopps from zootopia and looked it up to see if it was intentional and apparently the name (and job) similarities were not supposed to be a reference on the zootopia team's part and its "just a play on how rabbits jump" and they were "unaware of the 21 jump street character when naming judy" which i think is some pretty big bullshit because theres no way a character who's first name is Judy and last name is hopps (spelled with two P's the way hoFFs is spelled) and just so happens to also be a young and brand new cop is just a crazy random coincidence

Borderlands trailer was horrible... and great all at the same time.

It had a similar feel to the Fallout tv series trailer, which makes me apprehensive for the future of gamer movies (reminds me of the era where they were rebooting old TV shows like 21 Jump Street, CHiPs and Starsky & Hutch into goofy parodies of themselves).

If you're not intimate with the source material; it looks like a fun popcorner but if you are, the casting AND the character portrayals might turn you off from it.

Tiny Tina isn't as "caffeinated" as her in-game alter, Lilith isn't as young as hers and Roland isn't giving me Roland vibes. Knowing how the series likes to lean into dark humor, satire and absurdities; maybe this is intentional.

At least Cl4ptrap appears to be in game accurate...

The Ink Demonth 21

Today is City.

When Audrey had first seen the city within the studio, it had been empty and run down, the streets peppered with broken cars and trash cans. Now, though, it was lively and bustling. Lost Ones filled the streets, greeting each other and chatting on the sidewalk. The shops were alive with Lost Ones going in and out and the lights seemed to shine with more hope than they once had. It almost reminded Audrey of the city outside the studio. It was certainly cleaner at the very least. If you didn't count all the ink. But still! The city was alive! The Lost Ones were happy!

Trying to make the studio a better place to live had been a bit of an ordeal so far, but moments like this made it all seem worth it. Everyone looked so much happier...

"Ah, little lamb." Sammy's voice came from directly behind her, making Audrey jump a bit and turn around quickly to face the former prophet.

Sammy was looking better these days as well. He had a shirt now, although it was still a bit ink-stained, and wore his mask on the side of his head rather than hiding his face as he once had. He was working on unlearning his fanatical devotion to the Ink Demon and tendency to sacrifice people, and although some days were better than others, he was doing better overall.

"What brings you to the city today?" Sammy asked.

"I just wanted to see how everyone was doing," Audrey said, giving him a smile. "Seems like everyone's in a good mood."

"It is a good day." Sammy gave a slight nod, glancing at the throng of Lost Ones. "Betty is holding a pie-making workshop at the mansion and everyone is quite excited."

"A pie-making workshop does sound fun." Audrey's smile widened. "I guess that means you guys finished the kitchen, huh?"

A recent project for the studio inhabitants had been renovating Wilson's mansion to make it something that could be used by everyone. Someone had suggested building a big kitchen with multiple ovens so they could all do some cooking, which was what they'd been focusing most of their attention on lately.

"We did." Now it was Sammy's turn to smile, although his was much smaller than Audrey's. "Frankly, that was the easy part in regards to the pie-making endeavor."

"What do you mean?" Audrey frowned slightly.

"Well, ingredients for pie are a tad difficult to come by in this place," Sammy answered.

"Oh yeah." Audrey grimaced. "That does make sense. What did you guys end up doing?"

"Drew and Stein..." Sammy paused, his smile fading into an expression of weary annoyance. ""Magicked" some ingredients out of ink."

Audrey had to stifle a snort. "They "magicked" ingredients out of ink? What does that mean?"

"I can't think of any other word to describe it," Sammy said flatly. "They just... pulled ingredients out. It made no sense." Was this what Sammy had been like before the ink? It was kind of funny to see him so grumpy.

"Well, uh, I'm glad you guys managed to get ingredients," Audrey said, still giggling a bit

"As am I." Sammy gave a curt nod. "By the way, would you like to join the class?"

Audrey blinked. "Me? Join the class?"

"Yes." Sammy smiled slightly. "It would be a good opportunity for you to see the kitchen too."

Audrey considered this for a moment before shrugging. "Okay. I wasn't really doing anything anyway."

"Wonderful. Follow me." Sammy began walking toward the train station. "The next train should be coming in soon."

Audrey cast a last glance back toward the throng of Lost Ones before following. She was glad things were better now. They deserved it.

i found my older brother sam outside one night, having a smoke out back.

just seeing him with his ratty hair down, swaying slightly in the breeze, the light of the match, the gentle puff of smoke, even the smell, brought me such strange comfort.

“what have you been doing?” he asked me as i sat next to him on the step.

“listening to sad music,” i shrugged. “couldn’t handle it anymore so, i came out here.”

sam instantly shook his head. “kris, you can’t do that.”

i laughed slightly, “why not?”

“because,” he turned to me, a serious look in his eyes and even moreso in the inflection in his tone, “that makes you want to cry. and i told you never to cry in front of me.”

“i know,” i nodded. “why did you say that?”

“because… it makes me worry. a lot. and it drives me to fall back into old habits when i get upset like that…” he sighed. “i had a dream last night where i got admitted back to rehab. a third time. only this time…” he swallowed hard. “i didn’t make it.”

“sammy, no…”

he nodded. “i hated dreaming about it. i actually woke up from it, and i started pacing around the room. i was so panicked. you know my biggest fear is, is killing myself, for some… some stupid reason. like drugs. alcohol. narcotics. i can’t… i can’t slip back. i’m too afraid to. yet i know i’m perfectly capable. and that’s what’s scary to me…” he hung his head down, shaking slightly, kind of wrapping his arms around himself in a way. like he was trying to protect himself, but it just didn’t have the same impact.

“sammy,” i rubbed his back, in an effort to console, “there’s lots of things that i like about you. like…” i thought for a minute. “i think you have a pretty smile. please don’t ever mess it up.” i pointed to the cigarette. “those can do that.”

he looked back over at me, chuckling slightly. “y’know i’ll never kick this old habit. dirty old thing.” he took one puff of it and snuffed it out, tossing it aside before putting an arm around me. “y’know what i’d rather be, above anything else, before anything else. i want to be present. i want to be in your life. around you. spending all the time i have with you. having fun with you. enjoying the world with you, and life itself.”

“i know,” i leaned into his side embrace. “i worry about you tons. but i know that you’re doing okay. and i know you’re trying hard to live a normal life, as a non-addict. you’re trying to find distractions.” i pointed to the moon. “like that.” i turned to him. “isn’t it pretty?”

he smiled wide and nodded, the light from it casting a shiny reflection over his eyes. “i wish i could take a good picture of it, and not have it be this fuzzy white speck in this sea of darkness.”

“it sucks,” i agreed. “well, i’m just trying to think of other things we can do.” i smiled. “i like going to art museums. i wanna make you appreciate real art. not just what you think is art.”

“what i think is art?” he echoed with a lighthearted cadence. “c’mon, the original streetfighter is nothing short of a masterpiece. 21 jump street? beverly hills cop? those are *cinema.* seriously.” he empathized his points with dramatic hand gestures.

i rolled my eyes as i laughed at his obliviousness. “maybe you watch them a bit too much.”

he shrugged. “maybe i do. i’m stuck in the rut known as the 80’s, what can i say.”

“does henry like watching those movies?” i asked.

“sometimes. when he’s here,” sam pointed to the ground. “but he’s just too busy with work and such to be concerned with leisure right now.” he pulled open his phone and tapped open the text thread he had with him. “see, i wish i had it like he did. it’s so easy to take your mind off of what’s troubling you when you actually have something to serve that purpose.” he shook his head. “and right now, i don’t, so… it’s harder for me to…”

suddenly a flash of lightning caught our sight stemming from our right. it was heat lightning, too far away to really affect us.

“white lightning,” sam mused, nodding over that direction. “wouldn’t that be such a cool stage name?”

“it really would,” i nodded in agreement.

sometimes, if it was warm enough, we slept outside, laying in the grass, pretending the backyard was a giant mattress, as ticklish to our skin as it was. sam would always take off his hoodie and lend it to me so i could use it as a pillow.

“what about your pillow?” i asked him. “wont laying on the cold hard ground hurt your neck?”

“nah,” he shook his head, “i’m too beat to feel uncomfortable in any form.”

i’d still worry, though, cause that’s just the type of person i was.

i hated to think how a brain like his that was constantly overthinking was able to stabilize for the evening and settle for the night, pretending there was nothing but an empty space up there.

i wasn’t good at pretending. i always had the tendency to show my true colors. which sometimes came out in the rawest form, sometimes too powerful for me to realize. and i didn’t intend to hurt anyone, honest. especially sam, cause i knew he was a gentle soul. he loved our dogs. he loved my parents. he loved me. he didn’t want anything bad to ever happen to me, he wanted to protect me from any elements the world could throw at me. he just wanted me to be happy. not to take after him. he knew he was the worst influence on his younger siblings. with henry, it didn’t matter as much, he was only a year younger than him, old enough and smart enough to know better.

with me, well, his dirty habits were well in effect when i was a baby. i was easily convincible. i would want to look up to him, to be exactly like him.

that’s why he always distanced himself from me, in the beginning. he always wanted me to hang out with henry. the better influence. because that was really the only way he could look after me. and i bet that pained him so much.

i could remember mom saying to me, sam began to have conversations with me when i was still a fetus in her womb. he loved me before he even knew what i looked like. before he knew what my gender was.

he wasn’t the emotional type. naturally, ever time he felt something, he had this urge to conceal it. all the drug use had made him numb to most feeling, anyway.

but when i was born, he couldn’t stop looking at me with the saddest, glossed over eyes. he wanted to talk to me. to hold me. but he smelled too much of cigarettes, mom said. he had to stay back.

henry got to hold me after mom and dad did. sam couldn’t even look that way. and i had a feeling that henry wanted sam to hold me too, he kept looking over his way sadly.

i warmed up to henry first (even though holding babies was definitely not his strong suit). mom had told me once that back when my cousins were born, henry always had the shaky grip holding them, sam’s was steady and solid as a rock.

that’s where he got his protective nature from, i guess.

he was more protective of me than mom and dad ever were. henry acted more like a fun, bad-influency (the good kind) cousin to me. sam took his role as the oldest (and especially older sibling to me) perhaps a bit too seriously.

but i wouldn’t change a thing about it.

School of Rock (2023) Dir. by Richard Linklater my fave movie of all time. no questions asked. saw it as a kid and it rewired my brain completely. my dad and i quote bits of the latin dub constantly ("porque soy sexy! y pachoncito!"). jack black my beloved 💙

Company (2008) Dir. by Lonny Price i am a sondheim stan through and through and company is my fave musical of all time. this specific revival is my fave musical of all time. do not question why i'm obsessed with it, i just am. raúl esparza gave the performance of a lifetime as bobby and i will never not be upset that he lost the tony!!!! 😡

Mulan (1998) Dir. by Tony Bancroft & Barry Cook mulan is the best disney princess, you cannot change my mind. best soundtrack, best characters, shang having a bisexual awakening, what more could you want? this one is also heavy on the quotes back at my burrow (get it? because i'm bunny? i'll see myself out) the original is great and the latin dub is fantastic too, every time i do something stupid my dad breaks out the "deshonor! deshonor sobre toda tu familia! deshonrada tú! deshonrada tu vaca!"

Whiplash (2014) Dir. by Damien Chazelle look. i recognise this soundtrack playing on the telly when i'm in a different room with headphones on. it's THAT embedded into my mind. this movie came at a time where i was really doubting if film school was the right choice for me and single-handedly reignited my passion for filmmaking. i owe everything to it.

Four Brothers (2005) Dir. by John Singleton no shame in admitting jack mercer was my eddie munson before eddie munson existed. is this movie problematic? yes. does it hold a special place in my heart because it was always playing on the telly when i came home from school? also yes.

Pride & Prejudice (2005) Dir. by Joe Wright if you see someone telling joseph quinn that he has bewitched them body and soul, and they love, they love, they love him, and wish from that day forth to never be parted from him, it's probably me. 🤷‍♀️

Accepted (2006) Dir. by Steve Pink tied with four brothers as the stupidest movie on this list, this one is also very nostalgia based. truthfully, when i got to film school i realised i was kinda attending south harmon institute of technology and that sealed the deal for me lol

The House Bunny (2008) Dir. by Fred Wolf so dumb! so charming! huge cast of wonderful women who learn to accept each other as they are! love love LOVE this one, i used to have it in my laptop while i was away at college (this one, 21 jump street, and maze runner, odd collection, i know) and i watched it a lot when i was sad and lonely and missed my home 💕

Back to the Future (1985) Dir. by Robert Zemeckis there is only one rule in my family regarding movies: if you catch this one, you leave it on. you drop everything you're doing and you sit and watch. my eldest cousin has already shown this one to his son multiple times, and he's barely 4 💀

Monsters Inc. (2001) Dir. by Pete Docter we scare because we care!!!! my dad says boo reminds him of me because i was always in pigtails as a kid (still am, you'll have to pry them from my cold dead hands) and my mum keeps calling sully "osito" instead of "gatito" so this is a running gag in my house, we love monsters inc!!!!
