Am I enough - Bowser x GN!Reader fic

This fic has been one I've been working on for ages but I finally felt it was time to post it. Because deep down writing this has really helped me

Warnings : Heavy angst, talks of burnout, psychotic meltdown. Happy ending.

It’s true what people say about giving your all but it just not being enough. I knew being among that of Bowser’s castle staff would be a very difficult and demanding job. That was partly the reason I took it in the first place.

As my life in the real world just wasn’t right for me. So, you can imagine when I discovered an oddly large green pipe one day hidden away in an abandoned alleyway I cut through that night to prolong getting back home. I chuckled to myself at the thought of going through it and wondered what it would be like if I found a way into one of the many Super Mario worlds. My curiosity got the better of me. I got what I wished for and more so.

I’ve been living in the Darklands for a few years now. After I was found near the castle of King Bowser. I chose to work for him. Rising steadily up the ranks to a place where I was the caregiver role to the children of the king. This meant taking each day as it came because no two were the same. I was a platform for their pranks until they saw I wasn’t going to be scared away by them. Soon after that, the wee koopalings really grew to like me. They came to me with their problems. When they wanted an outside look at projects they were working on and even let me in on the newest revenge prank in the works. We grew into an odd sort of family dynamic. I would even at a push say that Bowser was more a close friend than my king.

I was known for my kind smile and caring nature to all who needed help. But lately, I felt the wild spark that fanned my bubbly personality had dimmed to a low flutter that threatened to extinguish leaving a husk of smoke behind to fill and suffocate my soul. I tried that much harder to act like all was well but when the big man himself kept trying to gently approach the subject of my recent spout of sadness. I found that the phrase “I’m fine really I am.” And a soft smile that had become the lifeline I clung dearly to was just enough to brush away any concern he had or so I thought.

I had barely managed to get through the day with my mask of normality not slipping and shattering to the ground But oh how it fell freely as soon as I shut the door to my quarters. My body sank in on itself with the weight of utter exhaustion finally being allowed to take over once more. Jr had noticed I had zoned out for the 5th time today when we were painting this afternoon. I told him that it was fine. I’m just a little bit tired. He looked at me for a second more before shrugging and going back to his canvas.

I know that I really need to sleep but right now I know if I went to bed I would just not want to wake up for the next day and the day after that and so on. I can’t worry my king or the koopalings. I think that is why I find my way to my ensuite bathroom in the darkness of my room. I didn’t want to put any lights on but when I got to the large tub and start to fill it. I set about lighting candles but only in the furthest corners of the room. It was better than nothing. It was just bright enough to see a silhouette of the bath at the center of the room. My eyes had adjusted to the dimness now that I just stood and stared at the water slowly rising up higher and higher. I normally would get undressed at this point. But what was the point.

I let the water rise higher transfixed by the sound of running water. My limbs moving on autopilot. I just climbed in completely clothed, shoes and all, leaned back, and finally closed my eyes.

I wanted to slip under the water and just drift away. People in my old life didn’t care but in the one I made here, I was wanted. Dare I say loved?

‘Am I enough?’

Thoughts swam frantically around in my mind. Each lasting a split second but long enough to make itself known. I don’t remember crying but it felt good to let it all go. The bath water was spilling over the sides now. I hadn’t turned the taps off. But it was okay. I let it run on. Flow over and pool beneath the tub. I let out the most guttural scream. Expelling all the negativity out of me. I just needed it gone.

“(Y/N) CAN YOU HEAR ME.” His booming voice split the air. I heard his heavy footsteps thud closer to the bathroom. The door broke into splintered pieces on the wet ground. “(Y/n)!” Bowser runs to my side. His large, clawed fingers turned the taps off, partially breaking one in the frantic movements. He scooped my sodden body out of the bath and cradled me close to his warm skin.

“Please talk to me.” He scanned me body to see if I was hurt.

I could see him talking but all I could hear was a high tinny white noise. I couldn’t get my limbs to obey me. I just hung there limply in his arms.

“I got you. I got you now.” He clings to me like I might fade from his grip into nothingness.

“B-bowser.” My tongue feels heavy in my mouth as I try to speak again.

“I’m here. I’m right here.” He sounds so small. Not like the fierce king everyone else gets to see. I’m crying again at the fragility that I’ve forced upon him.

“I-I’m so sorry sir.”

“No don’t say that. You have nothing to be sorry for. When Jr came to me today telling me he was worried about you. I should have stopped everything and gotten here sooner.”

Oh no. I scared Jr why didn’t I hide this better. Why didn’t I do something sooner?

“I’m frightened.” I choke out another sob.

“It’s okay.”

“But it’s not.” I hit his chest. “This is my fault. I let it get this bad. I kept pushing people away.” I keep thumping my fists against his chest and he just lets me. I’m begging him to just do something. Stop me. Just do something.

“I’m so tired. So damn tired.” I hit his chest once more before slumping against him again. He pulls me close. I can hear his heartbeat. It’s frantic, it’s worried. I nuzzle closer maybe if I get close enough it will calm down again. Even though I have clearly gone through a meltdown. I want to help him.

“I know you are. It’s been blatantly obvious that you were burning out before our eyes but you are so strong and caring you kept putting others before yourself. I need you to remember that you are enough. That you matter and you deserve to rest. The children will be fine for a few days if you take that time to rest up. Please let someone look after you for a little while. Please let me help you.”

I reach up and cup the side of his muzzle. His hand rests on top of mine like we are sealing a bargain. I smile weakly, to which he returns. He stands up, still holding onto me. As he walks us both back to my large bed. I’m starting to drift off to sleep but I needed to stay awake just enough to change into dry clothes that Bowser helps me into. Before lifting the covers and tucking me in. He looks down at me all curled up and slowly falling asleep. He moves off the bed but I grasp at his hand.

“Stay.” My voice is so small but he hears me. When the bed dips behind me I feel him pull me closer to his chest again. I finally let exhaustion take me but not before I felt him kiss the top of my head. A real smile tugs at my lips.

Maybe I am enough.

This is my first fic in months and Bowser has been a real comfort character for me recently. So I hope people like this. Even if it was more of a personal idea.

Does Junior start seeing Luigi as papa Luigi or is he still set on seeing Peach as his potential mama? He was hyped up on the idea of a second parent for a good while chances of it involving towards Luigi or him clinging to the Peach idea seems possible.

Also is little dude even aware of Bowsers and Luigis relationship or would he be completely oblivious on why his friend\babysitter has kissed his dad? Yaknow kids simple ways of thinking

Luigi isn't significantly different to Junior's other caregivers (eg Kammy), so there isn't an obvious moment for his mental picture of things to do a switch. Days!Junior has never really had a mother figure in his life so trying to pin down exactly what he'd expect from someone in that position is tricky and liable to change depending on the mood you caught him in.

Plus, a lot of Junior wanting Peach to be his mama are rooted in Bowser's goals. Funnily enough, he's more likely to have settled on wanting "Papa" Luigi if Bowser had gone through with his bad ending kidnapping plans and given Junior that as an end-goal. Junior wants a mum because that's something Bowser that has said he should have, not because he feels like he's missing something.

Saying "Mama Peach" is still going to be a habit that Junior needs to break (he's more likely to remember when he's not overwhelmed or ill, etc), but more because that's what he's known for a good chunk of his life, instead of him wanting Peach specifically as a mother figure. (He still likes Peach, she's always been nice to him when he's at tournaments).

Personal taste, but I don't see Junior calling Luigi any variant on "dad". He calls Bowser "dad" and "papa" fairly interchangeably, so I imagine most ways of calling someone father are already assigned to him. Though, if Luigi had been female, I could see the switch to "mama" happening there; that title is up for grabs. (Luigi will protest at being called "mama", he's been through enough of "wife" and "princess" to last him a lifetime).

Junior will eventually slot Luigi into his mental picture of his family, but probably won't progress beyond calling him his step-dad when not talking directly to him.

Junior's still young enough that romance is a boring old person thing. Once he hits the part of puberty where he starts to find other people attractive (assuming he's allo), then he'll start questioning Bowser's taste. Until then I can't imagine him thinking too much about Bowser being flirty towards Luigi (that's just what people do, Junior shows off all the time for attention too) or Luigi getting flustered (Luigi's a wimp sometimes and he swoons over foods just as much as he swoons over Bowser). He's aware that they're together, he just doesn't care enough about the idea of romantic relationships that he wastes any time thinking about it.

I’ve had this idea that I either want to write or draw it (most likely draw it, lol.) about how Luisa meets Junior in the movie.

After Luisa lands in the Darklands she comes across a baby turtle-like creature who is trying to act tough but really the little guy is terrified of being out in the open at night with thunder over head.

Junior would be really young, can’t really speak yet and just makes little squeaking noises. Junior was left behind because there was no way Bowser was going to take him with him and risk him getting hurt during his domination. However, Junior manages to escape his caregivers and goes looking for his papa. Only for him to get lost.

When the Drybones appear Luisa puts herself upfront, protecting Junior from these zombified skeletons. And when Luisa is caught by the Shy Guys, Junior refuses to leave her side clinging onto her leg.

When brought to Bowser Luisa (obviously having no idea that this monstrous being is the father to the adorably tiny turtle) holds Junior close to herself, trying to shield him as much as possible only for Junior to wiggle out of her grip and happily jump in Bowsers arms.

Thinking that Luisa kidnapped Junior Bowser is all but ready to unleash hell on her only for Junior to hop down and stand in front of Luisa on all fours in defense and yelping at his papa. Obviously Bowser is confused as to why Junior is protecting her, he’s even more puzzled when Junior refuses to leave her side.

That’s all I got so far.

Write a short story where Bowser was about to turn Mario into a baby after he was outsmarted by mario once again, but luigi shielded mario making luigi turned into a baby instead, bower had escaped, and mario went to e. gadd for help and e.gadd had no choice but to babysit baby luigi, while looking for some reversal mushrooms

Once again, the Mushroom Kingdom was in turmoil. Bowser, the relentless Koopa King, had hatched yet another nefarious plan to capture Princess Peach and thwart his arch-nemesis, Mario. This time, he had a dastardly scheme in mind. He had discovered a magical artifact that could turn anyone into a baby, and he believed that turning Mario into a helpless infant would make it easier to kidnap Peach.

Bowser's plan was deviously simple. He'd lure Mario into a trap, use the artifact to transform him into a baby, and then make off with Princess Peach. He knew Mario was smart and quick, so he had to set the perfect trap to catch him off guard. It was all going according to plan until Luigi, Mario's loyal brother, came to the rescue.

Luigi had always been a bit overshadowed by his famous sibling, but he was determined to prove his worth. When he learned of Bowser's plot, he rushed to Mario's side just in the nick of time. Bowser's trap was an intricate maze, and he had thought Mario would be alone. As Mario navigated the maze, he stumbled into a chamber filled with strange, glowing mushrooms.

Bowser, believing he had finally outsmarted Mario, activated the artifact and pointed it at the heroic plumber. But just as he was about to unleash the magic, Luigi, driven by brotherly love, pushed Mario out of the way and took the blast himself. In an instant, Luigi was transformed into a crying, giggling baby.

Bowser, however, didn't stick around to gloat. He grabbed the artifact and made a hasty escape, leaving Mario to attend to his now infantile brother. Mario, distressed and unsure of what to do, knew he needed help.

Without hesitation, Mario rushed to the home of Professor E. Gadd, the genius inventor who specialized in all things strange and supernatural. E. Gadd was the only hope to reverse the baby transformation and save Luigi.

E. Gadd, always up for an adventure, was eager to help. He examined the magical artifact and explained to Mario that reversing the transformation required a special mushroom that could only be found deep within the dangerous Boo Woods. He entrusted Luigi to Mario's care and set out to find the reversal mushrooms.

As the days passed, Mario found himself in a new and unexpected role as a caregiver for his baby brother, Luigi. Baby Luigi would cry and coo, and Mario did his best to soothe him, singing songs and telling stories. It was a different kind of adventure, but one that strengthened the bond between the two brothers.

Meanwhile, E. Gadd navigated the perilous terrain of the Boo Woods, facing off against mischievous Boos and solving perplexing puzzles. Eventually, he managed to gather the reversal mushrooms and return to the brothers.

With a sprinkle of the magical mushroom powder, Luigi transformed back into his usual, lanky self. The brothers embraced and thanked Professor E. Gadd for his help. As for Bowser, he would have to come up with a new plan to capture Princess Peach, because this time, the bond between the Mario brothers had proven stronger than any of his evil schemes.

Do you have anymore Kamek or Kammy thoughts? I loved the roles they both played throughout days and the quips on day 42 when Luigi showed up were A Plus

They both fill the same role in the games (and I didn't work very hard at making them distinct in Days). Kammy has a few more stereotypical old-hag-that-thinks-she's-still-pretty moments, but they're both of the opinion that their magic is super powerful and often take a nannying/nagging role towards Bowser and/or Junior, at least in the Paper Mario games.

I tried to have it be the case that Kamek was more in the position of advisor to the king and the one who mostly goes off on adventures with Bowser these days, while Kammy has settled into being Junior's caregiver alongside any duties she has in the castle. She still goes on adventures from time to time, but she's not being dragged out on hairbrained schemes nearly as often and her old bones thank her for it.

I'm not of the (as far as I can tell) popular opinion that Kamek has any sort of fatherly role towards Bowser. He's the king's advisor and Bowser's troops tend not to stand on ceremony, which is why he feels comfortable talking back to Bowser the way he does. He might've had stints of looking after Bowser as a young child (Yoshi games and Partners in Time come to mind), but that wasn't his main role and, if I was getting into it for Days lore, I might go as far as to say that looking after kid!Bowser was punishment detail and Kamek was lucky that he was magically talented and/or from a high ranking family so he could avoid more fatal punishments for his backtalk.

(I don't mind Kamek-as-Bowser's-dad coming up in fic I read, it just isn't my headcanon and won't be showing up in my fics).

On the other hand, Kammy is very much of a mind that she knows everything and therefore young people should listen to her. If I were to try and figure out her Days!backstory, I'd probably have her brought into the royal family's service via Bowser's mum or Isashell, with her having been some remote village's wisewoman before that (hence her frustration at not being listened to by young whippersnappers). She probably also did her share of babysitting kid!Bowser amidst her main duties (probably setting up health clinics for troops if I had to pick something).

I do miss having Kammy in the games, stereotype that she is. If nothing else, the Paper Mario series has been hemorrhaging visibly female characters since SPM.

So I saw a guy on tik tok discussing Bowser's and Luigi's age for shipping purposes which reminded of that time in middle school where I went down a rabbit hole of video games related fanfics where I found a BowserxLuigi one where it explored the relationship with the brothers ( Mario was a good brother but didn't realize how much Luigi was dealing with) to Bowser's kids life without a mom and a dad who they see as a wonderful but everyone is afraid of plus them learning to trust someone else as caregiver and had a beautiful theme of forgiveness and redemption.

Despite all that and me absolutely loving it

I never looked for other fics about the pair because 1) technically I didn't ship them 2) don't think others would compare

But now at my old old age I'll venture to AO3 to see what I could find.

little  waddling  feet  press  their  turtle - cat  paw  pads  upon  castle  floor  as  he  tails  his  father’s  parade  through  halls ,  mostly  keeping  tabs  on  his  arms  and  those  supplied  within  such  a  force .   with  his  little  make - shift  clipboard  since  kamek  was  off  on  hush - hush  power  nap - time  that  they  often  kept  secret  between  the  young  sire  and  caregiver ,  junior  took  notes  on  reigning  tyrant’s  comments  regarding  the  upkeep  of  battalion  squadrons .   of  course ,  the  prince  could’ve  keep  his  beak  buttoned  for  long .

                      “  paw’pa ,  it’s  sunday  and  we  still  ain’t  had’da  day  t’uh  play  ball !    how  much  longer  are  we  gunna  prattle  aroun’  before  we  have  some  REAL  fun ?  ”         junior  was  never  any  good  with  staying  patient ,  often  jumping  in  too  soon  on  the  firing  line  between  koopa  troops  and  mario ,  hence  his  usual  defeat  and  scuttle  home  to  cry  papa  to  the  big  koopa  king .   ponytail  shifts  as  he  huffs  a  little  plume  of  smoldering  smog  from  nostrils ,  fiery  belly  rumbling  for  a  lackluster  reminder  that  whilst  keeping  his  father  distracted  from  magikoop’s  absence ,  he  had  missed  his  snacktime .

was  that  why  he  was  so  grouchy ?   a  grumble  rockily  rolls  off  of  koopa  prince’s  bit  tongue ,  grumpy  kick  to  cobbled  hall  flooring  skittering  a  few  pebbles  from  the  years  of  worn  down  architecture .       “  it  ain’t  no  fun  countin’  cobwebs  an’  pilferin’  barrels ,  paw’pa .  ”
