Cars are a form of mobility aid! Your solarpunk future has to include space for people who still need cars.
Who need to arrive to a parking spot right outside the building ,and not have an alternative of walking a mile if that One Spot is full. Who need safe places to decompress or change medical equipment, who are immunocompromised and risk major health complications from the wrong crowded bus. Who get so overstimulated/in pain/exhausted walking around town that they can't attend the actual event otherwise. Who need space for their medical equipment/backup mobility aids/service dog.
We absolutely need a world where Public transit and walkable cities are the default! And!! There has to be room for disabled people and our needs in your revolution!
#cpunk#cripplepunk#chronic pain#fatigue#disability#solarpunk#so sick of all or nothing no nuance posts disparaging cars or framing them as isolating from the community#without any retrospection on what they enable disabled people to access just like any mobility aid#dont forget about us because every level of the current system already fucking did

disabled people who can't drive no one understands us
abled people don't understand the idea that you just...can't drive! that we have to rely on public transit or other people just to leave our houses! it's an isolating feeling, especially when you have to go through applications just to use the disabled transit programs.
my mom's been trying to convince me to drive again, I was practicing around covid time and ended up giving up because we couldn't find time and I was tired of it. but now she keeps going "oh but you drove in the past!!" and blocking my explanations of why I don't want to.
but this isn't meant to be a vent, it's to support my point.
I told her I'm photosensitive and her response was that she is too but it's "gotten better with age" which sure, but if I can't keep my eyes open as a passenger, do we really want me on the road? if I have a neurological condition that makes my feet freeze up, do we want me to use the pedals? and don't even suggest hand controls, my hands are even worse. and god forbid I learn to drive and then don't get medically approved to drive.
but for some reason, these are seen as excuses.
so if you've ever gone through this, i completely understand and get it. i don't enjoy relying on others but it's what we have to do.
#disability thoughts#juice says shit#physically disabled#disabled#chronic disability#cripplepunk#plus even if i get a license i might have to drive with someone else in the car who has a license for safety. whats the point

Transcript:
"Remember when disabled people were trying to warn everybody that the politicization of the CDC and the complete erosion of public health would impact everyone eventually? Well, news just came out that the CDC guidelines have been updated so that students with lice no longer need to be sent home early.
…......
Right?
The CDC is ACTIVELY weakening its guidelines on lice so that students with lice can remain in school. Now, why would they do that, right? 'Cause children missing school in a vacuum is not necessarily a bad thing, particularly when they're trying to prevent the spread of something like lice -- or COVID but hey, YOU all don't wanna talk about that anymore, right?
But it's because you all work and they don't want you staying home from work, so they'll expose your children to lice in order for you to stay in work, for you to make those ducats, right? For corporations and billionaires.
If this is something you can tolerate -- feel free, right? But these loosening guidelines don't just stop with lice. They are running down the list of things, so that it harms and impacts your children, your families and your communities, and disabled people have been saying this from the beginning -- that it won't just stop at COVID because disabled people are "disposable", but it'll impact every single thing.
And now, we have a rise in monkeypox, 'cause there's another variant going around, and that has a 10% fatality rate."
#slow motion car crash with multiple vehicles#and some of those approaching vehicles are carrying highly flammable gas#if you think this isn't a big deal because lice isn't deadly please for the love of god LOOK at the bigger picture#the warning sirens started blaring years ago when covid infection/disability/death started being normalised#as an inevitable part of ''living your life'' (to serve the wealthy)#sars cov 2#mpox#capitalism#etc etc etc#twt#tt#vid

This entire thread is horrifying. I was so lucky that my ochem professor let me take the final the next day after I missed it (and in that case it was my own fault, read the time wrong and thought it was later than it actually was)
#professors and grade school teachers who do this shit should be fired#not even joking there needs to be federal protections in place to prevent this from happening to students and workers#like blatant disability discrimination aside its still fucked for people to be punished for a car accident or for a death in the family

CAR EMERGENCY + NEED TO COME UP WITH RENT!
Our car died today. Apparently the power steering belt snapped off and one of the things supporting it fell off our car. We already have other repairs that we need done, so we need to raise about $3000 total, with at least $1000 before they can buy parts.
I also have to pay the movers who helped me move storage units $765 after what I already paid, and I'd like to pay them as quickly as possible.
Please spread this far and wide. I can't walk the mile it is to connect to the bus stop to get places so we desperately need to get the car fixed. And we just got rehoused and really don't want to be homeless again.

Cars vs Accessible Worlds
Alright, let me talk about one thing in terms of accessibility in science fiction settings - and Solarpunk specifically - that also has more than one side to it: Cars and accessibility. Because it is more complicated than you'd thing.
See: The fact that our world is so car centric really, really hinders accessibility. Wide streets are a hindrance for even normal pedastrians, cyclists and so on. If I want to get from A to B, and the route crosses a street, and there is only a traffic light every like 500 meters, it means tat I usually need either to risk my life or take the long way around to get there. And that is a fucking bother even when you are healthy and can easily take that long way around. And the more car centric a society is, the worse the issue becomes. Here in Germany it is a lot easier still to cross a street than in many places in the US.
And of course this gets a lot worse if you are disabled. Be it that you just cannot walk that far. Or if you are blind and cannot even see in what direction you could go for the next traffic light. Or if you are hard of hearing or deaf, you might be more in danger of being surprised by a car. (And that is without going into how electric cars being so fucking quiet makes stuff even more dangerous.) And, you know, neurodivergent people might also just struggle with the fucking noise that is created by roads and is often inescapable in big cities.
And of course even outside of the environmental issues, the constant presence of cars is also a health risk. Not just because of the risk of accidents, but also due to the pollution and how it interacts. Even if we all were driving electric cars, there would still be all those microplastics created by tires and streets and stuff.
So, really. We do need to move away from car centric infrastructure to make our lives healthier and to make the world more accessible for disabled people too.
BUT...
But there is the issue that some disabled people still might be in need to use some sort of personal transportation device that can cover both short and large distances, because for one reason or another public transport just does not work and cannot work for them.
For example someone with severe anxiety issues, or someone who will be easily suffering from sensory overwhelm. There might be other issues, too. Just some folks will always need something like cars.
And of course there is also the fact that stuff like emergency services will still need streets accessible to cars. Because the emergency services will just not get around using something like cars to get to all the places they might be needed.
And this... makes things complicated. Because infrastructure should not be car centric, no. But it needs to be accessible by cars - and be it just for emergency services.
This is just something that I would love to see more talked about especially within the Solarpunk sphere.

09/06/24 - Updated Post!
IMPORTANT: WE HAVE SECURED NEW HOUSING AND NEED MAJOR HELP!
My mother and I are both overdrawn (my mom by $210, me by $517) with charges on both accounts that are going to be retried in a few days. My large loan payment also defaulted, but my loan company agreed not to do automatic withdrawals on my account so I can put money in when I have it; however, my balance has gone back up to $1890. We need help covering the overdrafts and the loan payments.
The rest of the money will go to pay a mover to help us get stuff out of our larger units. We have another month on the units that a friend paid for but we need to try and clear out all three units we have by October 1st. My mom is worn out so any help I can have with a mover getting stuff out and bringing it up the stairs would be great.
We also need to raise $1300 to get work done on our car; our brakes were failing and we got those fixed but there was a secondary, less important problem that we still need to take care of (pinion axle or something like that) that we need to do $500 down to get the part. So some of the money will go to that, too.
Two urgent needs off our Amazon wishlist we need are the incontinence underwear and the lightbulbs. Our overhead light has no bulbs that work, and my daughter needs three more bulbs in her lamp. The rest will be saved to replace them. If anyone can help get the dresser as well, that would be much appreciated and would help my daughter get more space in her room.
Any reblogs of this post, monetary help or buying things from our Amazon wishlist would be so helpful. We're almost on our feet and hopefully we won't need as much help in the future. Thank you very much for reading, and have a pleasant day!

Non-wheelchair users, please do not take accessible taxis when don’t need them!!! Had wait in storm weather for 10 minutes because all accessible taxis at train station taken by people. Don’t care that suitcases take up space, fit perfectly fine in regular car. Wheelchair users need space way way more (even taxi got in now not accessible even though looked like from outside so very annoying). Probably preaching to choir but please think about this.
#wheelchair#wheelchair user#ambulatory wheelchair user#disability#mobility aids#accessibility#usually wouldn’t mind because can get in and out regular car and fold wheelchair but today have bad leg tremors and don’t want stand#just in case fall#but also don’t want other people folding chair so try take in full can’t do that in non accessible taxi#really annoying
