Movies I’ve Watched - 2023
238/238: Captain Phillips (2013) - watched 12/31/23
This movie is so stressful. I didn’t know anything about the story other than that Captain Phillips survived to write a book about it, so every plot development was incredibly tense. It does a good job of not dehumanizing the pirates — I didn’t want anything to happen to them either.

Disney Horses
Disney has never tried doing a franchise focused on their equine characters, and I am disappointed. So here is a partial compilation of Disney horses--namely the ones I think would be the most marketable--just in case Disney should ever change their mind on that point and wants a reference guide to which horses they should include in the line.
Major (Cinderella, 1950)
Major is a gray stallion who is temporarily transformed into a coachman for Cinderella's night at the ball.
Samson (Sleeping Beauty, 1959)
Samson is a gray stallion belonging to Prince Phillip. He is shown to be fast and fearless, and he hates distractions and detours.
Captain (101 Dalmatians, 1961)
Captain is a gray draft stallion who lives in the English countryside. He is instrumental in aiding in the rescue of Pongo and Perdita's puppies, and helps provide them with shelter and protection during their trek back to London.
Frou Frou (Aristocats, 1970)
Frou Frou is a flaxen chestnut light draft mare belonging to Madame Adelaide Bonfamille of Paris, France. She is a close friend of Duchess and her kittens. She is the only mare to be prominently featured in a Disney animated feature film with a specific storyline. Fantasia (1940) features a pegasus mare in one of its sequences (the mother of Peter Pegasus).
Philippe (Beauty and the Beast, 1991)
Philippe is a flaxen chestnut Belgian draft stallion who belongs to Maurice and Belle. He is very cautious and skittish, but bravely returns with Belle to the Beast's castle to find her father.
Achilles (The Hunchback of Notre Dame, 1996)
Achilles is a gray warhorse who belongs to Captain Phoebus. He is trained to respond to commands the same way a dog would, and even knows how to sit and heel. He appears to get along with Frollo's Friesian stallion Snowball, despite their owners being on opposites sides.
Pegasus (Hercules, 1997)
Pegasus is a pegasus stallion belonging to Hercules. He is white with a blue mane and tail. Pegasus isn't the most intelligent horse, but he's very loyal and courageous.
Khan (Mulan, 1998)
Khan is Mulan's faithful black stallion. He carries her into battle against the Huns.
Bullseye (Toy Story 2, 1999)
Bullseye is a chestnut stallion who serves as Woody's loyal steed in the children's show that spawned the toy line Woody is part of. In the Toy Story films, Bullseye is Jessie's closest friend and ally.
Buck (Home on the Range, 2004)
Buck is a bay stallion belonging to Sheriff Brown. He is incredibly egotistical and admires the bounty hunter Rico until he learns Rico is working for the notorious Alameda Slim.
Maximus (Tangled, 2010)
Maximus is a light silver Andalusian stallion who loyally serves the Captain of the Guard, acting as both his mount and his right hand man. He is intelligent, brave and fiercely patriotic. He dedicates his life to protecting Princess Rapunzel on all her adventures.
Angus (Brave, 2012)
Angus is a black Shire stallion who serves as Merida's mount and best friend. He has good judgment and hates having to carry Merida into danger, but will do so if the cause is just.
Sitron (Frozen, 2013)
Sitron is a brunblakk (brown dun) fjord stallion who belongs to Prince Hans of the Southern Isles. Despite his owner's sinister nature, Sitron is a polite, friendly horse with fast reflexes and an instinct to protect.
Fidella (Tangled the Series, 2017)
Fidella is a bay draft mare who belongs to Cassandra. She is fast, strong and brave, and Maximus develops a crush on her. Fidella does not come from a feature film, but this list desperately needed another mare.
The Nokk (Frozen II, 2019)
The Nokk is a Scandinavian water spirit tamed by Elsa. It serves as her mount. While it is Elsa's friend and allows her to ride it, it is still very wild and will drown trespassers on the Dark Sea.

Friday 11th October 2024
Today we caught the 173 bus for a big day out in the city. We tried to get there as early as possible because we wanted to catch a free tour in the Art Gallery of NSW. There are now two such galleries side by side. There is a new one opened just a couple of years ago specialising in modern art, but today we were not looking for a laugh, we wanted the more serious stuff that is available in the old original building. The tour we opted for was art from the 20th century. A nice lady showed us a selection of paintings and sculptures which tried to draw comparisons between the direction artists of the period 1900 to 1920s were taking in impressionism and even cubism, artists such as Grace Cossington Smith, Ben Nicholson, Eliot Gruner and Roy de Maistre. OK, I hadn't heard of them either but it was all jolly interesting. And she was able to show how this was an important turning point in the recognition of indigenous paintings to be viewed as works of art instead of objects to be placed in a museum.
On leaving the gallery, we made our way across Pioneer Garden and passing the statue commemorating Captain Arthur Phillip RN. Yesterday we walked along the front at Manly and were reminded of the visit Captain Arthur Phillip RN, first Governor of NSW made in 1790 to Manly. He landed close to where the wharf is and said to his men, come and meet the natives, they are really quite friendly. Just as he said these immortal words the aborigine in the front row chucked a spear at Captain Phillip's shoulder! Well obviously he laughed about it later, but was non too pleased at the time. Still they placed a little bronze plaque to mark the spot and here was a very much larger edifice, more befitting the man and his achievements and clearly without the spear anywhere to be seen.
Next port of call was to be the Opera House where we booked tickets for the Drama Theatre to see Julia, a play about Julia Gillard, the 27th Prime Minister who served from 2010 till 2013. Of British birth, from memory they hounded her out of office. This will be an interesting play and is on Monday.
If you get your timings right the food hall, near Wynyard where the bus goes from, has last minute deals on meals left over just before they close. We managed to secure two of the same, a chicken and a beef, before we jumped on a 171X bus home. Now this is the first time we have ever needed to catch a bus to the 'Heights' and we were just a little concerned in case we should miss our stop. Knowing that we needed to alight close to the Lawn Bowling Cub, Martine enquired of the driver if we were getting close. Now this is not the first time Martine has made a similar request, and on each occasion the respondee has jumped to the erroneous conclusion that we must be a couple of frustrated would be bowlers and are assuming our intention is to partake in a game or two. This I know is going to land us in trouble at some stage.
Now safely back without getting involved in a tournament the SB is on the table and we are reflecting on a very enjoyable day.

2022 Oscars Trivia (Post-Ceremony)
Everything Everywhere All at Once, with 7 wins, received the most awards since Gravity (2013, 7 wins) and the most awards for a Best Picture winner since Slumdog Millionaire (2008, 8 wins).
EEAAO is the third film to win 3 acting awards, after A Streetcar Named Desire (1951) and Network (1976), each of which only won 4 Oscars and neither of which won Best Picture. Like Streetcar, EEAAO only missed Best Actor. Unlike either film, EEAAO did not lose in its missing category, as it wasn't nominated for Best Actor and indeed had no one to nominate.
Michelle Yeoh is the second woman of color and the first Asian woman to win Best Actress. The first woman of color, Halle Berry (Monster's Ball, 2001), handed her the award -- not by accident, I'm sure!
Ke Huy Quan is the second Asian man to win Best Supporting Actor, after Haing S. Ngor (The Killing Fields, 1984).
This is the first time multiple actors of East Asian descent have won.
Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert are the third pair to win Best Director, after Jerome Robbins and Robert Wise (West Side Story, 1961) and Joel and Ethan Coen (No Country for Old Men, 2007).
Thanks to Daniel Kwan's win, the non-white-man Best Director streak continues. Of the past 11 years, only one had a sole win by a white male director: Damien Chazelle (La La Land, 2016), whose film Babylon was shut out this year.
Michelle Yeoh is the 8th woman to win Best Actress at age 60+, and this is the 11th such Best Actress win.
At age 64, Jamie Lee Curtis is the 9th-oldest woman to win Best Supporting Actress.
Sarah Polley is the second consecutive woman to win Best Adapted Screenplay (after Sian Heder for CODA). After a long drought, three consecutive years have included female screenplay winners (including Emerald Fennell for Promising Young Woman).
Daniels are the 7th/8th people to win Best Director at age 35 or younger, and this is the 8th such win.
Guillermo del Toro is the first Latin America-born Best Animated Feature winner (previous Latino/a winners Phil Lord and Yvett Merino were born and raised in the US).
Diane Warren continues to hold the record for most Original Song nominations without a win (14) and continues to be the woman with the most Oscar nominations without a win.
This is the second consecutive year that every winner in the Big 8 won their first award in the category, and the first time since 2014 that each of them was a first-time winner overall.
Five Best Picture nominees went home empty-handed: The Banshees of Inisherin, Elvis, The Fabelmans, Tár, and Triangle of Sadness. That's the most since 2013 (American Hustle, Captain Phillips, Nebraska, Philomena, The Wolf of Wall Street), i.e., the last time a movie won 7 Oscars.
This is the first time since 2017 (The Shape of Water) that the most-nominated film a) won Best Picture and b) won the most awards of the night.
"Naatu Naatu" is the first song from an Indian film to win.
All Quiet on the Western Front is the fourth Best Picture nominee in five years to win Best International Feature. It is Germany's first win since The Lives of Others (2006) and third overall (Nowhere in Africa, 2002).
Brendan Fraser is the first man to win an acting Oscar for a film directed by Darren Aronofsky, who previously directed Natalie Portman to a Best Actress win for Black Swan in 2010.
Dan Sudick continues to hold the record for most Visual Effects nominations without a win (13).
All Quiet on the Western Front is the fourth non-English-language film to win four Oscars (Fanny and Alexander, 1982; Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, 2000; Parasite, 2019).
EEAAO is the first science fiction film to win Best Picture.
Ruth Carter is the first black woman to win multiple competitive Oscars. She was the only black winner this year, the fewest since 2015, which had no black winners.
Matthew Freud, co-winner of Best Animated Short, is Sigmund Freud's great-grandson, is divorced from Rupert Murdoch's daughter, and just generally has an interesting Wikipedia page.
The Elephant Whisperers is the first Indian film to win Best Documentary Short.
As Jamie Lee Curtis noted in her speech, both of her parents were nominated for Oscars but did not win: Tony Curtis for The Defiant Ones in 1958 and Janet Leigh for Psycho in 1960.
This is the second time all four acting winners have been over 50, following 1981: Henry Fonda (76), Katharine Hepburn (74), John Gielgud (77), Maureen Stapleton (56). With an average age of 57.25, this is the third-oldest acting quartet, after 1981 (avg. 70.75) and 2020 (avg. 62.75).
This is the second consecutive year that all four acting winners have been first-time winners, and the first time since 2005 that all four acting winners have been first-time nominees (Philip Seymour Hoffman, Reese Witherspoon, George Clooney, Rachel Weisz).
This is the first time since 1955 that all acting and directing winners have been first-time nominees (Delbert Mann, Ernest Borgnine, Anna Magnani, Jack Lemmon, Jo Van Fleet).
This is the second consecutive year that only three films have won multiple awards.
The Black Panther movies are the first movie + sequel to win Best Costume Design, with both awards going to Ruth Carter.
EEAAO is the first film to win 6 of the Big 8 awards. A film can win a maximum of 7, since it can't be eligible in both screenplay categories, and EEAAO's only below-the-line win was Film Editing.
Navalny is the first CNN film to win an Oscar.

DC (Cinematic) Elseworlds
Now that I’ve detailed every single DCEU film, I’m going to get into James Gunn’s vision for the franchise, but since Sunday came upon me way too fast, I’m only doing the Elseworlds part today, James Gunn next week.
What’s Elseworlds?
So, DC Comics has a number of imprints, or rather, had apparently??? That’s news to me??? Yeah, I’m kinda behind the times, I seem to kinda keep jumping forwards and backwards. I read every Batman, Nightwing and Batgirl comic from 2009 to 2018, then I kinda went back to 1980s Batgirl??? When I desperately need to catch up to Rebirth Batman and Flash??? I’m dumb, I can’t do consistency. Anyways, wow, I really need to learn to reign in my tangents. I bet I have more tangents than actual content in my posts. It’s a wonder how I have like 60 notes. Maybe I should highlight tangents or something. Anyways, DC had various imprints that it uses to publish different kinds of comics, like my personal favourite Black Label, with darker themed stories about mainline superheroes outside of continuity, like HOLY HELL DCEASED IS NOT BLACK LABEL??? IT HAD SO MANY GRUESOME AND UNCENSORED DISMEMBERMENT AND MURDERS. Anyways uh Batman: Three Jokers, oh, oh, Batman: White Knight, Batman: Last Knight On Earth That’s a lot of Batman, I kinda don’t read much outside of Batfam and The Flash :P. So, Elseworlds was once an imprint like that, tackling“What if?” scenarios of superheroes. That is what The Batman and Joker’s retroactively called, Elseworlds stories separate from the main DCU.
This is what it looks like. Look me in the eyes and tell me it deserves the name.) as early on as Captain America: The First Avenger (2011) and the first Avengers (2012) movie. It also makes an appearance in Captain Marvel which I completely forgot about.
The Mind Stone is a huge part of the plot of both Avengers and Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015).
The Reality Stone appears in Thor: The Dark World (2013).
The Power Stone appears in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 1 (2014).
The Time Stone appears in Doctor Strange (2016).
The Soul Stone doesn’t appear in earlier movies.
So you see what I mean, even though the solo movies are mostly disconnected, they still serve the plot.
And Marvel has Kevin Feige to thank for this. He helped shape the narrative that he wanted to achieve using every Marvel film released. That is seemingly what DC wants James Gunn to do for them. I’ve already explained why I think James Gunn is so perfect for the role. The DCEU of old was so disjointed and messy, in complete contrast to Marvel, so I’m excited to see what James Gunn does for the franchise.
Elseworlds Films
Joker (2019)
A character study of the infamous Batman villain, the Joker. Aw man, Todd Phillips uses the word “woke” unironically. God help me. Dude made a movie about the failures of society, I did not expect this. Why does this happen so much 😭??? Thank god I didn’t adore him, unlike a certain author and a certain indie game dev I could mention. Is not hating people for no reason that hard? Okay, well, if there’s anything I learnt from history it’s probably that not hating people is hard. Anyways, politically charged tangent aside, the movie is an unreliable origin story through the eyes of Joker. Why is it unreliable? Well, the movie is from Joker’s perspective, and Joker’s alone. And some events make us question whether it actually happened or was a hallucination or Joker’s imagination or whatever. Here’s a great video if you wanna know more.Joker: An Unreliable Character Study and the One Scene That "Ruins" It
It’s an awesome movie. Joaquin Phoenix’s performance is stellar, and watching his slow descent into madness with everything in his life coming tumbling down. It’s a unique look on the character of Joker, and the unreliability adds to it, because of the multiple choice past and all.
The Batman (2022)
The Batman directed by Matt Reeves is the third live-action reimagining of the character in this century alone. A solo Batman movie for the DCEU has been in the works since 2014, and was set to be directed, written and produced by Ben Affleck himself, with influence from Arkham Asylum: A Serious House on Serious Earth, Knightfall, and Batman: Arkham Asylum, the game. Then in 2017 he announced that he was stepping down as director, but would still star. So, they brought in Matt Reeves to direct the film following Affleck’s departure. The movie was initially planned to be connected to the DCEU, but was later reworked to be earlier in Batman’s career, and then later was written to be in a separate universe altogether. Reeves wanted more of a recluse, like Kurt Cobain, because of “Something in the Way” by Nirvana, which is featured in the proportional material and in the movie itself and got a 1,200% increase in Spotify streams after the movie’s release. I still can’t comprehend how wild that is. Like, 1200%. Anyways, that resulted in emo Bruce Wayne instead of the playboy socialite Bruce Wayne every other movie depicts. The movie is also heavily inspired by the Zodiac Killer and other noir films, leaning into the “World’s Greatest Detective” side of Batman that most Batman films neglect.
Might be a hot take, but The Batman is probably my second favourite superhero film slightly behind The Dark Knight. Probably my favourite movie. As awesome as TDK is, this felt much more Batman-y. I’ve watched it like, at least 10 times.
Plot: Batman, in his second year of crimefighting, doubts whether he is actually making a difference, while he is faced with political killings perpetrated by The Riddler, who leaves clues at every crime scene for Batman. A small tangent, but each of them seems to be in something that looks like a greeting card, and good lord the Batman fangirl in me was bursting with excitement. It feels awesome to get like every single easter egg in the movie. Can’t find the pictures :/ but there were easter eggs galore to Hush, The Court Of Owls, Hugo Strange, comic storylines, etc. Anyways, I adore this movie too much to go into too much detail, so go watch it.
Upcoming Elseworlds Films
Just sequels for the previously mentioned movies. There are basically no details about The Batman’s sequel, but the Joker sequel is going to be called Joker: Folie á Deux literally madness [shared] by two. It’s obvious what that means, that’s right, Harley Quinn, played by uhhh Lady Gaga??? Idk much about her except she’s an ancient singer, but ig it’ll be interesting to see.
Prepare yourself for another huge post that you probably won’t ever finish :)

Here's our big August in Action theme show on What's New to Netflix, where it's all about explosions, car chases, shoot-outs, and the destruction of public property, but not before we talk about all the new stuff heading to Netflix this month as well.
Then we watch Tom Hanks deal with a group of ruthless pirates in Captain Phillips from 2013. Next, Eddie Murphy is back in the long-awaited Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F from 2024. And finally, the film that made Will Smith and Martin Lawrence stars, as well as kickstarting Michael Bay's movie career, Bad Boys from 1995.
All of this plus a whole lot of Chucky, unnecessary director's cuts, annoying influencers, movies people love to hate on, AMC's Netflix takeover, and just way too much content in general.

Captain Phillips (2013)
The true story of Captain Richard Phillips and the 2009 hijacking by Somali pirates of the U.S.-flagged MV Maersk Alabama, the first American cargo ship to be hijacked in two hundred years.
Warning: Review may contain spoilers. Read at your own risk.
JayBell: This movie is so stressful. I almost felt like I was the one being held hostage and kidnapped by gun-wielding pirates. Even knowing how the movie ends, I do think it does a great job building tension throughout.
Tom Hanks is great at playing the likable every-man here. I like that he's smart in this movie, but also very scared and vulnerable too. He doesn't break out the ninja moves, turn into MacGyver, or somehow become a self-rescuing super hero. He's just a resilient guy who tries his best. And aren't we all?
I love the level of understanding that kind of develops between the main pirate and Tom Hanks' character. It isn't quite forgiveness or anything, but the pirates don't feel like crazy super villains. You understand why they make the choices they make, even as you hope they don't make them. It's interesting that they are so young and disorganized and naive in their pirating, yet feel so dangerous and unpredictable at the same time. It's a cool balance to watch.
I was very engaged and invested throughout the whole movie. It's entertaining, scary, well-acted, and emotional (shoutout to the captain's therapy bill in the final scene). I think it delivers on all its promises.

Anzie: I knowwww JayBell said Tom Hanks is always the everyday guy vibe and he looks like everyone’s uncle in this movie, but I have to say I was distracted for the first maybe 15 minutes of this movie bc I swwwear he was giving specifically my one uncle vibes. It was the glasses. The shirt. The whole old man in early/mid 2000s outfit. The watch. The glasses. The GOATEE!! Ok it’s out of my system.
That being said the rest of the movie had me sick. I was so panicked and nervous my nails and cuticles were wrecked for days. I’m feeling a cold sweat come over me now. It’s such an experience. And I have to say I was skeptical- I was like ok Tom Hanks is a captain of a boat that gets taken over by Somali pirates based on a true story - ohhhh I wonder how this goes. But it was good and I was so invested.
That being said- being stuck in that life boat?? Wowzers. And the crew complaining that they want off it’s too dangerous?? You’re in open water carrying cargo??? Even if there weren’t pirates WHIcH HaVe ExiSTedD FoReveRrr - it’s open water??? That’s inherently dangerous and where are you gonna go?? I also would love to complain about the very slow response from any help they called in when they very quickly notice there were pirates trying to hijack them- like what the fluff?
Anywayyyy for a biopicish kinda vibe it was A+. And I’ll never see another boat without thinking “I’m the captain now” like I’m 12 years old again.
Rating: 6/10 Fishies 🐟

Caso seu navio cargueiro seja atacado por piratas somalis no chifre da África, espero que seja americano.
