BY RACHEL SONIS
It came to her in a dream (an embarrassing one, at that), Taylor Swift recalled about the origin of her song, “All You Had To Do Was Stay.” On the cusp of her ascent into stratospheric superstardom with the release of her fifth studio album 1989 in 2014, Swift explained to TIME that in the dream, her ex had come to her front door to get her back, and all she could say back was a high-pitched “Stay.”
“It was almost operatic,” Swift said. “I woke up from the dream, saying the weird part into my phone, figuring I had to include it in something because it was just too strange not to. In pop, it’s fun to play around with little weird noises like that.”
It’s how some of our greatest pop songs have come about: making music out of the weird or the strange. That's why it is all the more surprising that “All You Had To Do Was Stay” has never gotten its due. With the release of Swift’s rerecording of 1989 bringing Taylor’s version of the song, nine years after the original, the time has come to reassess the long underappreciated track.
There’s a science, of course, behind “All You Had To Do Was Stay” and its placement on 1989. The song falls into what Swifties call the “Track Five” factor. If you look at Swift’s albums, the story goes, the fifth track of each one is the saddest and most cathartic of the project—and typically best captures its mood and message. On Fearless, it was “White Horse.” On Speak Now, it was “Dear John” and on Red, “All Too Well.” The list goes on, and for the release of her seventh studio album Lover (with “The Archer” as track five), Swift acknowledged the clear pattern.
Contrary to popular opinion, this is also true of “All You Had To Do Was Stay.” It’s one of the saddest songs in Swift’s discography, but it’s created in a way that feels foreign to those who have been following her music since she cried tears on her guitar. In fact, it’s worth asking if it’s a strategic move for the self-proclaimed “mastermind” of subtext.
Saying so long to the country darling we once knew, 1989 marked Swift’s entry squarely into the pop arena. We heard inklings of this in Red two years prior, but this time, the shift in sound was unmistakable: Swift was charting a path toward a kind of pop stardom where her music was going to become ubiquitous and permeable—heard in your bedroom, your mom’s car, or even on the dance floor.
In many ways, this album was meant to be a light-hearted pop forward soundtrack to Swift’s life. “Shake It Off” and “Blank Space” were devil-may-care responses to the media circus and Swift’s romantic throes while “Welcome to New York” was a gleeful proclamation of young adulthood and finding one’s footing in a world that is electric and full of possibility. Even the most pointed of songs, “Bad Blood,” still feels coy and playful. But as any Swiftie knows, you can never have fun without the pain. And that’s where “All You Had To Do Was Stay” plays its critical role.
Perhaps that’s part of the brilliance of 1989, but also of Swift’s mastery. Behind the pulsing synths, drum pads, and processed backing vocals, lyrically, the story she’s trying to tell is just as vulnerable, relatable, and cutting. “People like you always want back the love they pushed aside. But people like me are gone forever when you say goodbye”—a line that lands with a sinister calm before an explosive “stay!” carries us into the chorus. There, with brutal honesty, Swift battles how complicated breakups can be: how you might hate someone and still want them back. How people inflict their deepest wounds on each other despite their best intentions. And how you can dance through the sadness and feel release—from that person and sometimes, even, from yourself.
Catharsis comes in many forms and from places where you’d least expect. Sometimes it’s tender and quiet. But it can also be loud and raise hell. With “All You Had To Do Was Stay,” Swift made clear that catharsis in the form of the latter was OK—that loudness and spectacle is OK. The song’s drama, sharp storytelling, and dreamlike quality are unmistakably Swiftian. At the same time, it shows the beauty of how pop music works: How weird and crazy sounds and your most embarrassing stories and dreams can be operatic and accessible. If only you give yourself enough room to lean into it and dance.

TBB as Taylor Swift Songs - Song+Character Analysis… Part One
(Part two) (Part Three)
Okay so the writers told us that last Crosshair is Bad Blood and Wrecker pre-chip removal was Shake it Off.. But I needed more, so here it is.
Hunter - The Archer
I almost gave this to Omega, and it could easily be hers too, but I thought the lyrics ring true for Hunter, especially in season 2
Combat
I’m ready for combat
I say I don’t want that, but what if I do
Throughout season two, Hunter struggles to balance being a soldier and being a brother/father. He wants to lay low and avoid contact with the empire, but he knows that taking these jobs are the only way to survive. He’s unsure about settling down on Pabu because as much as he wants to provide a stable live for his family, they’re still soldiers, aren’t they?
I never grew up, it’s getting so old
Help me hold onto you
This line is commonly just interpreted as someone being childish and never becoming an adult, whereas for Hunter it reads that he, alongside his brothers never had a childhood. The clones were basically soldiers as soon as they could walk. Because of this Hunter puts in so much effort to make sure she has the childhood they didn’t get.
We see the stress start to bear weight on Hunter in Season 2, he spends most of the season in a state of depression and he’s not as close to Omega as he was in the previous season. We watch him grow jealous as she spends more time with Phee, and we see him throughout the season always close to her, but not conversing with her nearly as much as he used to, he wants to be with Omega and spend time with her, but he feels so much pressure to be a perfect father that he struggles to do anything more than trail behind her.
Dark side
I search for your dark side
Hunter, but also the entire batch, minus Omega, have evident trust issues. Hunter has a hard time accepting help from others, and it clearly takes a while for him to trust Cid, and Phee. He’s waiting for them to turn on him, and Cid eventually does.
You can tell that Hunter struggles with the reveal that Crosshair removed his chip. He has a hard time accepting it at first, and by season two he’s accepted it, and as such doesn’t believe that Crosshair really defected from the Empire.
Screaming, who could ever leave me darling?
But who could stay?
In the first season, Hunter struggles with what to do with Omega. At first he instantly wants her to stay with them, because she’s their sister, she belongs with them. But then it becomes glaringly obvious that Omegas a child, and doesn’t belong with soldiers. He tries to send her away, for her own safety but also because of his own fear that he can’t take care of her.
They see right through
Can you see right through me?
They see right through
They see right through me
I see right through me
I see right through me
As Crosshairs words of doubt ring true in Hunters ears, he takes upon himself on a growing pressure to do everything right, to always make the right call, to keep his family safe. He grows anxious and closed off from his family, but we see that he always tries to put on a brave, kind face for Omega. And yet as soon as she turns away we see how tired he is. He’s scared to fail the way Crosshair told him he had. Crosshair saw right through him, Hunter sees right through himself, and he’s scared that Omega will see through him too.
The Archer is a song about anxiety and that in of itself relates it to Hunter, but Taylor’s musical genius shines in this song in that the music never drops. It builds and builds and builds, but never hits a breaking point the entire song. This is how we see Hunter in season two. His anxiety and stress builds and weighs him down, but he never breaks. He bottles it in, refusing to crack. Even when Omega is taken at the end of the finale, he’s angry, but he’s cold and reserved in his anger, instead of the rage and grief we know he’s feeling on the inside.
Okay, I was planning on having multiple in one but this actually might take so long I might have to do one post per character. I’m also planning on doing a song for relationships between characters . I already have an Idea for Crosshair and Hunter’s song(I bet you can guess what it is.)

what songs from TTPD and TA are now yours? Which ones have spoken to you the most?
songs that are genuinely MINE
chloe or sam or sophia or marcus: i cried myself to sleep listening to this song on repeat on release night and for the life of me i cant tell you why. i think it’s a great example of her being older really deepening her writing— just that old scarred over longing of a possible life, a possible love, too far away to reach but close enough to brush past. also, the double edged sword of “if you want to break my cold, cold heart, just say’ i loved you the way that you were’”— you loved me before i’d twisted myself into the shape i am now in order to keep my current partner, but also, you loved me the way i was, not the way i am now
i look in peoples windows: i wrote a poem with the line “im afflicted by the not knowing” in it!! inspired by the outside!! and by spending so much of my childhood reading by moonlight and spying on my neighbors through their windows!!! it was called where midnight lives!!! what the fuck!!!
robin: another song i sobbed hysterically to. i was a strange little violent child obsessed with dinosaurs it feels like a lullaby someone made specifically about 3 year old me.
songs that i’m obsessed with:
but daddy i love him: the bridge is just so fun to scream along to. everytime ive been in a car since the album came out ive played this at least two times just cause
fresh out the slammer: it’s just. the first verse??? the way the song stutters apart for the last verse??? this song takes the blurry muse conceit of the album and uses it to its fullest. also just the diminishing returns from “but its gonna be alright, i did my time”
i can do it with a broken heart: my first listen favorite
the smallest man who ever lived: the bridge????? the bridge???? the bridge???? a few of the negative reviews specifically mentioned this song as boring and for a millisecond i was so angry i could’ve exploded
the black dog: this is like, the platonic ideal of a taylor swift song to me. just that old quiet tragedy she can build out of little moments of hoping your ex will remember you when they hear your favorite song or not having known your last kiss was your last kiss or your ex still sharing their location with you. like, it’s just her at her best, but with the maturity to sing “and you jump up, but she’s too young to know this song”
i hate it here: people have talked about seeing reputation in the anthology but i think you can also see so much debut and it makes me feel so tender. also i genuinely don’t understand why people don’t like “if chose the 1830s but without all the racists” like?? it’s supposed to be a bit clunky?? the songs about the limits of escapism?? the line enhances both of those themes?? also “i’m there most of the year” is such a funny devastating relatable lyric to say about a daydream
thank you aimee: it’s not every day a song inspires you to send this message about something a child did to you (fuck you madeline!!! fuck you jessie!!!)
the bolter: avoidant attachment representation!!! i love that it takes the stuff she hated about herself in the archer and just accepts and loves them and appreciates what they’ve given her. i especially love it because bolt can mean like, crossbow bolts, so it’s a flip on the archer. also “bolt” is one of my favorite words i love all the different meanings
“the only thing that’s left is the manuscript, one less souvenir from my trip to your shores, now and then i re-read the manuscript, but the story isnt mine anymore” also just had me sobbing. there’s just. wtf!!!!!!

♒︎ heavenly. to say I devoured this book would be an understatement.
♒︎ i’ve read a few reviews after finishing the book, and i can’t relate the complaints about the addition of vampires to the plot. they might’ve been unnecessary, but did i love it? yes. because, if there’s magical objects, potions, mysterious arches, and prophecies… why not vampires? i ate that up fr.
♒︎ also, i just like vampires 🫣
SPOILERS‼️
♒︎ apollo’s ‘death’ came as a shock, to me. I WAS LITERALLY SPEECHLESS. but that ending? i could seriously have never expected that. he’s so alive that I just know shit is going to hit the fan and if he wakes up in tbona, he’s going to be bitchy and i’m going to hate him <3
♒︎ and, oh, jacks. i so so so hope there’s much more to what eva thinks he’s done (manipulating her) bc i want him to get a good character arc.

𓂃 ˖ ♱ evangeline fox — evangeline fox might just be the most unrelatable fmc i’ve ever read, but it’s seriously okay. each novel’s mcs have their own traits and flaws, and eva’s is that she’s too optimistic and trusting. i do feel bad for her, tho.
𓂃 ࣪˖ ♱ jacks / the prince of hearts — now look, for someone who’s reading this after reading caraval, I’M IN LOVE ALL OVER AGAIN. my absolute fav kind of fictional characters are the cocky and sarcastic ones with a mysterious backstory, so jacks is perfect <33 everything about him screams ‘love me’ so 😋💓
𓂃 ࣪˖ ♱ evajacks — SPOILERS ‼️ : evajacks’ chemistry was almost non-existent in this book (except when he tried to bite her and turn into a vampire beep boop), but i’m hoping it gets much better in the next (though, i’m finding it hard to predict how that will happen considering what eva knows about jacks what she does 💀) i’m rooting for evajacks anyway because they’re now my caravalverse otp along with scarlian <3 : spoilers end <3 <
𓂃 ࣪˖ ♱ marisol tourmaline — marisol is such a classic high school white girl. see, i get that her mum said all that stuff to her face (which is so not how parenting works) which might have led her to want to be loved and cared for, BUT STILL. MARISOL. COME ON. she’s literally like ‘i want only what she has, because i just do.’ which is so wrong on a lot of levels. get yourself a bf without bewitching them, and i would have had 0 problems with you, marisol.
𓂃 ࣪˖ ♱ apollo acadian — apollo. mon dieu, this man. ik it was a curse, but oh god. my hopeless romantic heart beat for apollo’s dialogues when he was cursed in this book. he was borderline obsessed (but in a non-stalker way, guys) but STILL 😭 (can you tell I have issues? 💀) oh, to be loved like cursed apollo loved eva.

My predicted ratings of Taylor Swift’s songs in her upcoming album The Tortured Poets Department:
(hey, so basically to anyone who isn’t a Swiftie, this post is gonna make zero sense to you so just ignore this lol)
1. Fortnight — 5/10, I genuinely don’t think I’ll like it, maybe it’s bc the AI version on tiktok isn’t my style at ALL and kinda ruined it for me. Plus the title doesn’t stick out at all and I’m so sad that this song is track 1, esp considering her most recent album Midnights had an iconic opening track.
2. The Tortured Poets Department — 8/10, I always LOVE her title tracks and I’m so excited for this one.
3. My Boy Only Breaks His Favourite Toys — 7/10, the title doesn’t really stick out to me but I feel like it’s gonna end up being an amazingly catchy song. Negative points for the easy rhyme. (“boy” “toy”)
4. Down Bad — 10/10, I’M CLAIMING THIS SONG IDC IDC, I HAVE SUCH HIGH HOPES
5. So Long, London — 10/10, I’m actually terrified to listen to this song bc not only is it TRACK FIVE, but I know for a fact that I’ll sob. I’M SO EXCITED AND SCARED.
6. But Daddy I Love Him — 5/10, not too bad not too good, love the Little Mermaid reference but idk something tells me that I won’t vibe with this song
7. Fresh out the Slammer — 6.5/10, the title’s interesting and I have no idea what to expect
8. Florida!!! — 4/10, hate to say it but I feel like this might be my least favourite
9. Guilty as Sin? — 10/10, ALSO CLAIMING THIS SONG, I’m so excited for this omgg
10. Who’s Afraid of Little Old Me? — 6/10, I feel like the lyrics are gonna be similar to her song Anti-Hero, which makes me super happy, but I’m deducting points for the painfully corny title.
11. I Can Fix Him (No Really I Can) — 9/10 for relatability reasons. Like damn Taylor thanks for calling me out. But also there’s a SLIGHT possibility that this song is about M*tty Healy and I am simply very concerned about that.
12. loml — 7.5/10, I just KNOW it isn’t just gonna stand for “love of my life.” Taylor’s too much of a genius to use that abbreviation for its common meaning.
13. I Can Do It With A Broken Heart — 7.5/10, -2.5 points for the corny title, but I do expect to cry when I hear this song, and well, who doesn’t love songs that make you want to rip your hair out?
14. The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived — 9/10, I saw someone on tiktok say there’s a correlation between this and the story of Rumpelstiltskin and it blew my mind. I have high hopes for this
15. The Alchemy — 9/10, manifesting that this sounds like The Archer and has parallels to Invisible string (“a single thread of gold tied me to you”) 🙏🏼🙏🏼
16. Clara Bow — 9/10, I just know this song is gonna be interesting and addicting as hell
On April 19, I’ll reblog this post after I listen to the full album and I’ll confirm or deny these predicted ratings. If anyone wants to join in on this, go ahead!
#i saw swifties doing this on tiktok so why not jump on the bandwagon#taylor swift#the tortured poets department#to my non-swiftie followers: *whispers* it’s ok.. just scroll past.. you didn’t see anything..

Hello!! I WANT MORE ANGST, can you drop some quotes that describes them (levi and eden) perfectly🙆♀️🙆♀️
This took me so long to answer, SORRY. Most of these are gonna be song lyrics because I don’t really have any quotes saved, and I’m not sure where to look for good quotes 🤧. But I hope these fulfill your desire for angst 🫶🏼.
“I know history may not remember me fondly, but I hope you do.” - not sure who this is by, but someone in my ao3 comments said they found this on instagram :).
This is 100% Eden to Levi. She knows some people will hate her forever for what she did, but she hopes Levi could at least acknowledge the good times they had.
“Time is too slow for those who wait, too swift for those who fear, too long for those who grieve, too short for those who rejoice, but for those who love, time is eternity.” - Henry Van Dyke.
This one reminds of when Eden and Levi were having that heated discussion in the forest, and Eden said she just wanted every second she spent with Levi to last for an eternity.
“Was I stupid to love you? Was I reckless to help? Was it obvious to everybody else? That I’d fallen for a lie. You were never on my side. Fool me once. Fool me twice. Are you death or paradise?” - “No Time To Die” by Billie Eilish.
This song literally goes PERFECTLY with this fanfic. This whole song is Levi’s POV after finding out about the truth about Eden
“I know you’re not in love, like you used to be. Guess I’m not enough, like you used to think. So you just run.” - “Run” by Joji
I see this being about Levi being furious about how Eden kept the truth to herself for so long. This relates to what he said in the forest: “You said you loved me, but if you truly loved me, you would have stopped what we had the moment you knew I had feelings for you.” She ran away instead of being honest, and that’s what made him feel like her love wasn’t completely genuine.
“Were you sent by someone? Who wanted me dead? Did you sleep with a gun underneath our bed? Were you writing a book? Were you a sleeper cell spy?” - “The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived” by Taylor Swift
Literally, thank you to all the people who recommended this song because it goes SO WELL 😭, especially this part. Eden was sent by Marley to kill Levi, writing stuff in her journal about her time in Paradis, and living a lie for five years.
“I didn’t have it in myself to go with grace. ‘Cause when I’d fight, you used to tell me I was brave.” - “my tears ricochet” by Taylor Swift
To me, this whole song is in Levi’s POV about Eden’s betrayal. This line basically explains why he was being an asshole to her after they met again after four years. He’s still holding on to that anger and just couldn’t find it in himself to be mature about it because he still thought about all the pain she had caused him. She made him feel loved, only for him to discover she wasn’t who he thought she was.
“And when you go away, I still see you.” - “Sunsetz” by Cigarettes After Sex.
Very simple line, but I just really love this song. I could see this as Levi still yearning for Eden after so many years even despite the anger he held.
“Help me hold onto you. I’ve been the archer. I’ve been the prey. Who could ever leave me, darling? But who could stay?” - “The Archer” by Taylor Swift.
I can see this being about Eden wanting to hold on to Levi. All her life, she never felt good enough or lovable. Her mother was the only exception until she passed away, but it wasn’t really until meeting Levi that she saw how capable of being loved she was. She felt misunderstood, but Levi always understood her. She wanted to find a way to hold on to him, but was terrified knowing she was hiding the truth.
“It turned into something bigger. Somewhere in the haze, got a sense I’d been betrayed.” - “The Great War” by Taylor Swift.
This song perfectly summarizes Levi and Eden’s relationship as a whole. This line obviously pertains to Levi, but I think the song in its entirety is about a relationship that has gone through toxic times (aka, a ‘war’), but in the end, they still find a way to spring back despite the difficulties.
“We were too close to the stars. I never knew somebody like you, somebody. Fallin’ just as hard. I’d rather lose somebody than use somebody. Maybe it’s a blessing in disguise (I see myself in you). I see my reflection in your eyes.” - “Reflections” by The Neighbourhood.
This mostly pertains to Levi. I feel like this song is about loving someone who may not love you back? Or maybe loving someone who just isn’t good for you? Levi fell hard and fast because he had never met anyone like Eden before, and after her betrayal, he thought he’d get over her eventually, but she still continued to linger in his mind years later.
“Our love is six feet under. I can’t help but wonder. If our grave was watered by the rain. Would roses bloom? Could roses bloom again?” - “Six Feet Under” by Billie Eilish
I think this song is about yearning for a love that died. Levi was heartbroken after the betrayal, but he still always wondered what would have happened if Eden hadn't 'died' in front of him. He wondered if their love could 'bloom' again, even after all the hurt and pain.
This came out longer than I expected lol. I hope you found this fulfilling!

How about you
what are you top five Taylor swift songs and albums
you can do go in to depth if u want as well :)
Thanks for the ask! This also answers @cherryswift13's question.
Top five songs:
cowboy like me - This song just drew me in from the beginning. The instrumentals and Marcus's backing vocals are so perfect with Taylor's main vocals. I love the story in it as well.
gold rush - The message is perfect and I love the "gleaming, twinkling" part. As well as how it changes from being like yeah this happens to it's just a fantasy.
Death By a Thousand Cuts - This is the best Lover song. I don't really know how to explain it, but it's wonderful. I just love it and love it and love it.
illicit affairs - Everything below top 3 can change at any point, but for this long illicit affairs has practically been in the top 5. I really like her "angrier" version during The Eras Tour. It's so personal but it's written in a vagueish (I think that's the word) way where you can apply it to your life well.
Chloe or Sam or Sophia or Marcus - I say this is Taylor's most personal song. Listening to it is so sad; it's like illicit affairs where you can apply it to your life because of the way she words it; the different variations of the "always wondered" line makes me go feral!
Top five albums:
Evermore - Folklore also has great story telling lyrics, but Evermore has sonic variety that makes each song give you the same nice feel and gives your ears something a little different and less repetitive. It has awesome 3 track runs (what I think is one of the most important features an album should have) and only one real skip (coney island).
Speak Now - My favorite era. It's so relatable to anyone, whether you're a teen or a young adult or a middle aged person or a senior. Everyone has been through and is still going through life changes and this album really shows that.
Midnights - I love the introspection and retrospection. It does have similar base sounds but the songs all sound different enough where your ears don't get tired easily. She writes about thoughts that other people definitely have at night too and the way she words it makes it easy to insert them into your own life.
Lover - I don't think this one really has an explanation. You've heard the album so it's understandable. No skips (other than The Archer) and always a vibe whenever it comes up.
Reputation - I love how dark it is on the outside but lovely when you take the time to actually listen. I love her persona (or whatever it's called) that she has in this album and I wasn't a big fan before I became a Swiftie but I can now recite all of the songs (except for So It Goes) on the spot. It's truly enchanting.
#i didn't mean for this to be so long#and I'm sorry it took me like 2 months to answer#I'm trying to go through my drafts#Thanks for the ask!!!#over-the-oceancall#ask

Prongfoot Week Day 4: Music that Makes you think of Prongsfoot (and Why)?
Look, I'll level with you, I can (and will) make pretty much any song about prongsfoot (and have made an embarrassing number of prongsfoot related playlists to prove it).
However, here are some of the ones that currently get me in the mood for reading/writing prongsfoot.
We laugh until we think we'll die, barefoot on a summer night Nothing new is sweeter than with you
For your classic, gooey S/J feels, they were always each others home <3
Insane, inside The danger gets me high Can't help myself Got secrets I can't tell I love the smell of gasoline I light the match to taste the heat I've always liked to play with fire
For the burn down the world and have fun doing it S/J vibes
We're hollow like the bottles that we drain You drape your wrists over the steering wheel Pulses can drive from here We might be hollow, but we're brave (And I like you)
For cool, rich boy summers S & J most certainly had
So let's dance until the sun aches, love until our bones break Babe, we only need each other
And again, I just love S & J and summer vibes (especially while slogging through the miserable southern hemisphere winter :( )
So why don't we go out and get a drink in the west end Smoke a cigarette and talk shit about exes Take a couples shots and see where the night ends Stop pretending like we're just friends
Self explanatory I think haha
There's a spot on your chest just for me It's personally addressed And anyone there before me Should be a criminal offense
Jealous S vibes ;)
You said, "Forever," and I almost bought it I miss fighting in your old apartment Breaking dishes when you're disappointed I still love you, I promise Nothing happened in the way I wanted Every corner of this house is haunted
Angsty S/J vibes
Red lights Stop signs I still see your face in the white cars Front yards Can't drive past the places we used to go to 'Cause I still fucking love you, babe Sidewalks We crossedㅤ I still hear your voice in the traffic We're laughing Over all the noise
To cry my eyes out to because Sirius should never have had to live without his soulmate
All the king's horses and all the king's men Couldn't put me together again 'Cause all of my enemies started out friends Help me hold onto you I've been the archer I've been the prey Who could ever leave me, darling? But who could stay?
James would stay, that's who.

Happiness - evermore
“There is happiness Past the blood and bruise Past the curses and cries Beyond the terror in the nightfall” “Tell me, when did your winning smile Begin to look like a smirk?”

-----------
My Tears Ricochet - folklore
“I didn't have it in myself to go with grace And you're the hero flying around, saving face And if I'm dead to you, why are you at the wake? Cursing my name, wishing I stayed Look at how my tears ricochet”
“You know I didn't want to have to haunt you But what a ghostly scene You wear the same jewels that I gave you As you bury me”
“And I can go anywhere I want Anywhere I want, just not home And you can aim for my heart, go for blood But you would still miss me in your bones”
-----------
The Archer - lover
“I wake in the night, I pace like a ghost The room is on fire, invisible smoke And all of my heroes die all alone Help me hold onto you”
“'Cause they see right through me They see right through me They see right through Can you see right through me?”
“All the king's horses, all the king's men Couldn't put me together again 'Cause all of my enemies started out friends Help me hold onto you”
-----------
Coney Island - evermore
“ Break my soul in two looking for you But you're right here If I can't relate to you anymore Then who am I related to?”
“And I'm sitting on a bench in Coney Island Wondering, "Where did my baby go?" The fast times, the bright lights, the merry-go Sorry for not making you my centerfold”

By Spencer Kornhaber
Breaking: Taylor Swift is not simply a voice in our ears or an abstract concept to argue over at parties, but a flesh-and-blood being with a taste for sparkling pajamas and the stamina of a ram. All concerts are conjurings, turning the audience’s idea of a performer into a real thing, but last night’s kickoff of Taylor Swift’s Eras tour in Glendale, Arizona, heightened the amazement with Houdini-escapes-handcuffs physicality. After years of having their inner lives shaped by Swift’s highly mediated virtual output, 63,000 individuals can now attest to the vibrancy of Taylor Swift the person. Somehow, seeing her up close made her seem more superhuman.
Every aspect of the night felt shaped by the Ticketmaster-breaking reality that she has not shared air with masses of mortals since touring in 2018, and that she released six albums in the interim (four original, two rerecorded). The emotional brew was excess and gratitude, cut with nostalgia for time lost, and made chaotic by physical circumstances. The structure was unwieldy yet urgent: 44 (yes, 44) songs over more than three hours. Swift created the vibe of an ecstatic cram session, like an epic outing with a far-flung bestie visiting for one night only. “So, uh, is it just me or do we have a lot of things to catch up on?” Swift asked early on, sitting behind a piano whose mossy encrusting gave it the look of long-submerged treasure and helped underscore her point.
Going into the night, fans speculated about how Swift would bring her perfectionism to bear on the tricky question of which songs to perform. Maybe she would swirl her albums together into a sleek playlist, reframing a now-sprawling catalog around some thematic through line. But she instead decided to segment the night by album, leaving the big lessons of her trajectory to emerge from the juxtapositions already present in it. And really, any expectations of a focused, fireside chat fell away at the beginning of the set, when the onstage clock struck midnight (though really it was only 8 p.m.).
No space on earth could’ve handled the hype released at that moment. Her opening pick was unexpected: a woozy, truncated “Miss Americana and the Heartbreak Prince,” a somewhat deep cut from 2019’s Lover (key refrain: “It’s been a long time coming”). Then came the hugely awaited live debut of the fan favorite “Cruel Summer,” a track emblematic of Lover’s careening, happy-go-lucky maximalism. Overlapping waves of sound—fans wailing like emergency sirens, the thump and bump of Swift’s live band and backing tracks—ricocheted around the Super Bowl venue into an awful din. Everyone was singing along but no one, at least where I was sitting, could hear Swift. She was facing a physics problem: How do you tell a story in a literal echo chamber?
The answer was for Swift to slow down and take control as she always has, with her words. With each break to address the audience, Swift’s knack for focusing emotions and maneuvering them helped coalesce a mood. In those overwhelming first few minutes, her first statement was relatable: “I don’t know how to process all of this.” Soon she explained that the concept of the show was to “adventure” through her first 17 years of music, album by album—in unstated, and thereby suspenseful, order. Then came the night’s first true gut punch, the ballads “Lover” and “The Archer.” For the latter, Swift stood alone, listing her vulnerabilities to a pulsing beat, until pyrotechnic sparks fell in a curtain behind her. This was where we all wanted to be: feeling one-on-one intimacy but with spectacular three-dimensionality.
The turning of one “era” to the next was like the turning of a pop-up-book page, revealing new colors, architecture, and story lines. Swift’s art direction remains intuitive and unfussy, but the detail work is sharp, helping to re-enchant familiar imagery. For the segment devoted to the cozy Folklore, she lazed, catlike, on the slanted roof of a cabin whose frame glowed with what seemed to be starlight. The requisite giant snakes of Reputation, her 2017 armored tank of an album, hung amid stark, vertically imposing scaffolding. By contrast, the urban wonderland of 1989 was horizontal, with the stage becoming a fashion runway for Swift’s lively dancers to stomp across in crisscrossing patterns. On a night this long, little visual surprises went far. At one point, she induced gasps by seeming to dive into the stage as if it were a pond and then swim to the other side.
The ordering of the eras, and of the songs within eras, also kept the suspense high. Swift’s beloved 2010 album, Speak Now, emerged for only the keening “Enchanted,” sung by Swift in a ball gown amid a field of flowers. Her self-titled debut also appeared just once, in a humble, piano-bound performance of her first single, “Tim McGraw.” By contrast, the 2020 album Evermore—seen by some as a glorified B-sides collection—got four tracks with lavish set changes. After spending the past few years letting her work speak for itself while the audience litigated its meaning and merits, she was finally asserting a point of view about her own catalog. Evermore, she said, is “an album I absolutely love, despite what some of you say on TikTok.” She cast a hilariously suspicious gaze across the enormous room. “I see it—I see all of it.”
Her facial expressions were often just as potent, making up for sonic detail that the stadium’s acoustics swallowed. With her older lyrics achieving the cultural familiarity of folktales, Swift was game for theatrical reinterpretation. Giving fans the “Delicate” performance they’d agitated for on social media, Swift went comedic, delivering “You can make me a drink” as an impatient command, not a come-on. For the 2010 Fearless section, she acted charmingly blasé as she strapped on her guitar, invited us “back to high school,” and made half-hearted cheerleading gestures. These early songs were still great, but, she seemed to say with a wink, she’d grown a lot since writing them. The most stunning performances, however, were dead serious, conveying icy resentment in glistening eyes and a sternly set jaw, as on “Champagne Problems,” “My Tears Ricochet,” and the 10-minute version of “All Too Well.”
Oh yeah, that’s right—that giant set list made time for a 10-minute song. When she donned a glittering robe and began strumming that wounded ballad, it was the prestige of a magic show. The audience could at last wrap their heads around the fact that she was really going for it, not just with this song but with this whole marathon-revue concept she’d been dreaming up for years. Late in the night, she broke from the era-by-era format with an acoustic moment—one whose featured song, she said, would change every night of the tour. For this opening show, she picked Folklore’s “Mirrorball,” clarifying her mission statement: “I’m still trying everything / To keep you looking at me.”
She succeeded in keeping us looking, though it must be said that by the time the culminating Midnights era rolled around, the crowd had moved from excitement to awestruck submission, at least those who’d survived. Around me, seats where people had screamed at throat-scorching frequencies at the beginning of the night were now empty. Small children who’d been brought to the show were napping in the arms of their chaperones. I felt the sort of happy daze that often precedes deep sleep. The concert had been unbelievable, but so was the fact that this one human woman planned to do it again the next night, and for many after.

Hey! I wanna get to know my Swiftie mutuals. Tell me your top 5 songs and albums from her. Feel free to go into depth/explain if you'd like!
hey!!! meowdy! ( yup, i read your bio and agree) nice to meet you! i'm sorry for all my lore but it is hard to talk about things i love without bringing personal matters with it. i feel like i can talk about taylor lyrics without trauma dumping so i am truly sorry for the things i wrote. but since you said you want to know your mutuals here i go!
TOP ALBUMS
1 - folklore: it is such an ethereal experience for me. i love how all the stories in it are connected in some way and the way she could create so many details for all the characters tbh i feel like i could have been any one of them and in some ways i am. i love how every song feels like summer rain, is comforting and vulnerable. i was the first album of her that i felt i could relate to 100%. is my all time favorite.
(now the positions after folklore vary depending of the day for me so i may change them later)
2 - the tortured poets department: i know is new and everyone is freaking out about it but for me that's one of the most honest pieces of music i have ever listen to it. i keep caught on all these debates about to whom she wrote it but is so stupid because these songs were never about anyone BUT taylor. she could have dated anyone and still wrote these masterpieces, it isn't about a man, it is about taylor swift. and she put SO MUCH of her heart in it that i can feel it. all that anger, all that pain, all that fear it all came from her. she is the artist. i know some critics say is easy to write 31 songs if they all look similar (haters gonna hate is so fucking true) but for me as an inspiring artist is a relief to know you can create different things about the same topic and don't feel ashamed about it. you can write about the same theme a thousand times and guess what? it can be a thousand times different because it will be a thousand different parts of yourself. everything about ttpd is so beautiful ( plus dead poets society references makes it perfect bc is my favorite movie)
3 - evermore: follows the folklore aesthetic and vibes. marjorie? champagne problems??? tolerate it???? Does she have a hidden camera in my backpack or something?
4 - speak now: i'm nineteen wtf she wrote something like THAT when she was nineteen?????? this album is so magical, It has some of the fantasy she later put on folklore and evermore but with more joy and cheerful melodies. listening to speak now is like opening my favorite book over and over. i wish i could be emma falling in love and i wish to live a timeless love and i wish i could sing long live with my friends/found family after winning a battle. i just love it all so much and never grown up? i listened to it when i was packing my things to move out of my hometown so you can imagine how much i relate to it. castles crumbling is also so close to my heart because i constantly feel i'm burning bridges and fucking things up. so yep all these fears of loneliness and failure goes present in this album goes deep .
5 - midnights: as a HUGE fan of the moon ( the moon is my true soulmate and i don't care if it "just a sattelite"or a "bunch of rocks and dust glued together" because guess what? i'm also a bunch of universal dust glued together) the whole celestial aesthetic of the album hits me like a train. all these confessions, these letters, these maniacal thoughts i have after the sun sets are not only mine. i love how she hugged me through these lyrics and showed me that everyone is haunted by ghosts after midnight. but the night time isn't just a place for nightmares, there is also hope, and joy and good dreams.
TOP SONGS
1 - mirrorball : since the first time i listened to it all i could think about is "someone finally sees me"
2 - the archer: she saw right through me. i am so scared of being seen because if someone sees me, if someone truly knows me it would hurt 1000 times more being rejected by them.
3 - you're on your own, kid: i lost all my friends after high school, literally no one of the fucking people i used to talk to every day and go to their houses and remember their birthdays. all of the people i used to open up to, the people i used to cry and laugh with just didn't reach out anymore and i know it is half my fault but it made me realize how truly alone i am as a human. It doesn't matter how much you connect with someone you are always on your own at the end of the day and she literally summarized that feeling in a fucking song.
4 - i can do it with a broken heart: because you still can be a mirrorball even when the ones you built the show for have left.
5 - the lakes: dead poets society vibes and i'm also a poet and i also want to run away.
6 - renegade: (you asked for 5 but here is a bonus track for you haha <3) i sing that song is a platonic way because it translates so much of my relationships with my friends and family. i sing along thinking about them and i know they could sing thinking about me because of trauma and miscommunication is such a top topic in all that.

Hi Phoebe! For the TSwift songs or albums, what kind of vibes does Harry bring out?
Hello friend!! Thanks for this!
Over the last two years I’ve dedicated to this, I have come to the conclusion over and over again that Taylor Swift basically WROTE the song “The Archer” about Harry James Potter.
I have been trying, probably for the better part of a year, to write a songfic to it that I think adequately captures everything I feel connects Harry and the song. So far I’ve had one published attempt, and while it wasn’t my worst work, I want to do better. So I’ll keep trying.
I don’t even need to say anything else other than: look at these lyrics. And yes, I copied the whole entire song because it all applies. I could write a THESIS about why this song relates to Harry.
Thanks again friend!
LYRICS BELOW!
Send me a Harry Potter character or ship, and I'll tell you what Taylor Swift song AND/OR album they remind me of.
Combat, I'm ready for combat
I say I don't want that, but what if I do?
'Cause cruelty wins in the movies
I've got a hundred thrown-out speeches I almost said to you
Easy they come, easy they go
I jump from the train, I ride off alone
I never grew up, it's getting so old
Help me hold onto you
I've been the archer
I've been the prey
Who could ever leave me, darling?
But who could stay?
Dark side, I search for your dark side
But what if I'm alright, right, right, right here?
And I cut off my nose just to spite my face
Then I hate my reflection for years and years
I wake in the night, I pace like a ghost
The room is on fire, invisible smoke
And all of my heroes die all alone
Help me hold onto you
I've been the archer
I've been the prey
Screaming, who could ever leave me, darling?
But who could stay?
(I see right through me, I see right through me)
'Cause they see right through me
They see right through me
They see right through
Can you see right through me?
They see right through
They see right through me
I see right through me
I see right through me
All the king's horses, all the king's men
Couldn't put me together again
'Cause all of my enemies started out friends
Help me hold onto you
I've been the archer
I've been the prey
Who could ever leave me, darling?
But who could stay?
(I see right through me, I see right through me)
Who could stay?
Who could stay?
Who could stay?
You could stay
You could stay
You
Combat, I'm ready for combat

IM A LITTLE LATE BUT. STEDDIE SWIFTIES!?!?? IM IN
debut, steve adores taylor country era. he plays that album a lot while driving and even imitate (or… try to) the country accent. his favorites are should’ve said no and our song. eddie… well it’s not much his taste but! he enjoys picture to burn (you know, the homophobic version)
fearless, steve’s kinda a fearless girly, not his favorite album but has a special place in his heart. him and eddie absolutely SCREAM you belong with me. eddie really likes the melodies and lyrics but still not what he prefers.
speak now, I DONT WHY but something tells me eddie really really likes speak now. the whole magic and dragons and long live (one of his absolute favorites songs ever) along with haunted and better than revenge. steve just cries a lot while listening to dear john and back to december.
red, steve harrington + this album = a really happy steve with fuzzy socks and a big cup of coffee. top 1. he adores it, brings him some comfort like autumn and pumpkins and hot chocolate. i sense this is the album eddie started listening to taylor with. of course, one christmas eddie gifted steve a red scarf with a red cd and of course, steve cried.
1989 is eddies guilty pleasure, and he totally knows how to do that style intro in his guitar. a little too much pop and his friends would make fun of him for listening to it, but the doesn’t care. taylor swift invented pop for him. steve is out of the woods and new romantics coded.
reputation, EDDIE’S FAVORITE ALBUM OF COURSEE. he spends a lot of time listening to it and could speak for hours about it, about how it’s not about seeking revenge but about fighting against that reputation and try to find yourself without listening to what others have to say about it. and how you, sometimes, find yourself in others too. i feel like if they went to the eras tour, eddie would absolutely go as reputation, yk something with snakes and black and glitter. steve loves to hear him go, proud of the swiftie he made. and he (kinda) hates kanye so…
lover, slow songs and heart crushing lyrics. this is steve’s shit. HE IS THE ARCHER CODED. adores cornelia street and afterglow. eddie (secretly) listens to lover a lot, but don’t say that to anyone ok? he has a reputation to keep.
folklore THIS IS HARDCORE SHIT. and steve’s favorite of course, he just relates to this album a lot. eddie really likes my tears ricochet and this is me trying ☹️ poor baby.
evermore, more hardcore shit. steve and eddie listened together this album for the first time and went???? what the actual fuck taylor swift who gave the right to??? while crying. tolerate it and ivy just hits different.
midnights, more pop and that means more eddie munson love. vigilante shit and karma stan forever. this albums feels personal to steve, maroon, you’re on your own kid, question, labyrinth HE CAN GO ON AND ON.
NOW I BELIEVE
Steve’s top 3:
red - folklore - midnights
Eddie’s top 3:
reputation - speak now - 1989
HELLO
EDDIE AND STEVE SCREAMING YOU BELONG WITH ME???? YES. ABSOLUTELY YES
Eddie would fucking love better than revenge and Steve crying to back to December? so true.
Eddie loving Style and playing it? helloooooo?? yes yes yes
AND OFC REPUTATION IS EDDIES FAVE! YES YES YES ALSO YES TO HIS ERAS TOUR OUTFIT (YES TO ANYTHING YOU SAY AT THIS POINT)
Steve being the archer coded please @taintedcigs we got Steve on our team
you're saying my tears ricochet and this is me trying being Eddie's faves? stop these are my absolute faves too (my tears ricochet is my #1)
Eddie and Steve would cry to tolerate it, totally yes yes. AND to champagne problems too of course!
I AGREE WITH ANYTHING YOU SAY ANON YOU'RE A WISE ONE
