Chapter Thirty Four: Under The Weather (Spot Colon x Female Newsie)
Uuuuggghhh. A cold. A simple, yet extremely annoy’n, cold. And a cold, if not taken care of, turns into the flu, which turns into pneumonia, which turns into death.
For a whole week I’s been hide’n my symptoms, which so far had only been a scratchy throat and some drainage, but now I gots a whole sore throat and fever ta go with it. I don’t tell Jack ‘cause he’ll try ta stop me sell’n papes, and I don’t even think of say’n noth’n to Spot ‘cause he’ll keep me locked inside for a week!
But I ain’t sure how long I can keep this up- my energy’s beginn’n to slow down too…
I’s at my sell’n spot already beginn’n to drift off and it ain’t even dusk yet. Passerbys look at me in pity and disgust, not want’n to catch someth’n from me.
Ugh. This is a bust. But I can’t go back now- then they’ll see I really is sick. I need to get paid, so I can eat, so I can get better, so I can keep sell’n- this seems like a never-end’n circle, but it’s a good never-end’n circle, a circle I get to share with Spot.
“Hiya Becs!”
I groan and try to show a bright smile. “Hi Race.”
Racetrack struts up, looks me up and down, and lifts his eyebrows. “You look terrible.”
“Charmed. And you look hideous. What else may I help you realize on this fine day?”
Race chuckles, but then seriously says: “Becca, you is sick.”
I hang my head. “How’d you guess?”
“By tha sad, weak state you’s in!” He gestures to me. “Ya look like you’s about to fall over! How long’ve you been ill?”
I smile sheepishly. “Almost a week. But-”
“Don’t even think of come’n up with an argument, ‘cause I’m take’n you to Jack.”
My eyes widen. “No, no! I ain’t gonna tell Jack I’m sick- he’ll tell me off ‘til tha cows come home-!”
“Then I’ll take you to Spot.”
“I ain’t tell’n nobody. I godda sell papes-” At that moment, my body decides to betray me. I feel my eyelids grow heavy, and lean down on a crate. “I- I…”
I see Race shake his head as he threads his arm under mine, help’n me stand as I black out.
“You can’t do everyth’n, Becca. Don’t worry- we’s gonna get you bedda.”
I wake up, lay’n in Spot’s bed and covered in almost every blanket in New York- I’s surprised I can even breathe!
I groggily get up, unsure how long I’ve slept. My cold feels worse…
I stumble down tha stairs, and find Spot and Race talk’n in tha kitchen. When they see me, they immediately panic.
“Becca, get back to bed.” Race warns.
“Beauty, you’s still sick.”
“Guys, I’m fine. I- Achoo!” Obviously I’m fine? “I need to sell papes-”
“Ya can’t sell papes when your dead!” Race gets in my face.
Spot, be’n tha ova-protective person he is (he and Jack could do a competition), steps up intimidate’nly. “Enough, Higgins. Becca’s gonna rest now, right Beauty?”
I glare at my husband and shake my head. “No! I ain’t that sick! I just need to- hey!”
Spot picks me up and begins climb’n tha stairs.
“Tell Jack his sister’s recuperate’n,” he calls down to Race.
“I will do that. Get well, Becca.”
“Bye, Race. Now Spot-” I turn to face him. “Put. Me. Down! I can walk poifectly fine on my own!”
“Then tell me why Race had to carry you here while you’s was unconscious?” Spot says back.
“He… assumed I was too sick to work?”
“Maybe he’s right.”
Spot carries me to tha bed and sets me down, then begins cover’n me in blankets.
“Beauty, you’s sick and need to rest.”
“Yeah I’s sick, sick-a you worry’n ‘bout me!”
Spot ignores this and feels my arms.
“You’s freez’n!”
“I’s fine!” I grumble. “I- Achoo!” A sneeze escapes me.
“For God’s sake, Becca- all a guy wants to do is help ya! Accept some help once in a while!”
I scrunch my face, then go into a cough’n fit. Ugh! I hate colds- flu, whateva.
Spot sits down and rubs my back, support’n my coughs.
“Fine. I’ll sleep, but as soon as I’m bedda I’s sell’n again.”
“That’s all I need to hear.” Spot lays down next ta me and joins me under tha covers.
I inch away. “No, no. You ain’t come’n near me. ‘Cause if I’m sick, I don’t wanna get you sick.”
Spot smirks. “You already have.”
I panic. “I did? I’m sorry, I-”
“Ya made me luvsick!” Spot grins triumphantly.
I blink. “What? Spot, that’s one of tha cheesiest things you’s eva said!”
Spot hugs me closa and kisses my forehead.
“And it got ya all flustered, and it’s adorable!”
“Where’d you get that? Take a page oudda Mush’s book?”
“No- actually came up with that meself. Just get bedda for me, please? I can’t have you’s die’n on me again.” He forces me to lay down and rest my ache’n head on his chest. “If you’s this bad in tha morn’n, I’s get’n you a doctor.”
“Sounds fair,” I mudda as I drift off in a groggy sleep.

Thankfully, he seems to be in the recovery process, and his fever's been gone for days.
"You feeling any better?"
"I feel awesome," he says, dropping a heavy arm around your back.
You take his face into both hands. You'd worried he'd make you sick too at first but whatever it is he has he's yet to pass on. You figure if it was catching you would've felt it by now, and you can't say you care too much when you steal a kiss. He tries his very best to reciprocate, his exhale hot as it fans over your top lip.
He peels his dry eyes open as you pull away, and you remind yourself to get him a hot towel or a tea tincture, something to ease the soreness.
"You're on the up and up, handsome," you say.
Eddie's never been sick like this while you've been together. Colds and the flu when you have a kid as young as Roan are a given; you've both fallen victim to her runny noses and sore throats a thousand times. They're easy enough to work through, especially when Eddie makes his lemon and honey tea. But this sickness, a virus, has had Eddie up against the wall. He's really worried you.
He can see it on your face.
"I'm actually feeling way better," he says, sounding extremely like himself despite the undertone of scratchiness to his voice. "Got a damn good nurse looking after me."
Roan's footsteps echo up the stairs. You don't turn to look at her as she enters the bedroom, hand stroking sweet, shaky lines down his stubbly cheeks.
"Hey, Roanie," he says, shifting so he can see her from behind you. "D'you have a good day at school? Come and tell us."
"Daddy!" she cheers, climbing up onto the bed and walking across it. Eddie pulls her skirt out of her tights where she's accidentally tucked it in, almost losing an arm as she collapses into his side.
"Roan," you chide gently, "be nice, baby, your dad's still fragile."
Eddie wraps his arm around, sending you a very grateful look as he says, "It's okay, I didn't like that arm very much anyway. Now c'mon, I wanna hear all about it. Did Stacy K remember her show and tell?"
Roan starts to recount the day's events, little legs tucked under her knees and the top of her body draped over Eddie's chest. You keep a selfish hand on the very edge of his face, thumb petting his cheek. After a short few minutes his eyes start to droop. He tightens his arm around Roan and rubs her back, her soft cardigan bunching up under his hand.
"Baby, I'm still feeling icky, okay? Maybe you can tell me the rest later?" he mumbles, hand slowing.
"You can tell me double," you offer distractedly, frowning at Eddie's unhappy face. He doesn't look peaceful anymore, he looks tired. Ragged.
"Okay," Roan says, kissing Eddie's cheek three times in a row. You can't tell if she's upset by his lack of attention. She doesn't look upset, but she can be surprisingly deceptive.
She slides off of the bed. Her steps stop at the door. "Mom?" she asks.
You beam at Eddie's dozing face and give his slack cheek another quick kiss.
"What?" you ask Roan, turning away from her dad with a smile. Everytime she calls you 'mom' it makes your day, and today is no exception.
"Can we have spaghetti shapes?"
You squeeze Eddie's arm before you stand and meet her in the doorway, looking down at her mini features with a fond smile. "Yeah, we can have spaghetti shapes. They had princess one's in Bradley's," you say, suddenly excited as you remember.
"Really?"
"Mm. But there's spongebob if you want those ones instead."
Roan takes your hand and starts to pull you toward the steps. "Princess ones, duh! Please."
You watch Eddie's face until you can't, following Roan down the stairs and into the kitchen.
You love how it's started to look as much like her and Eddie's kitchen than just your own. Her drawings and certificates litter the fridge, a family portrait pride of place and secured with upwards of five magnets so it doesn't fall off. There's sugary cereal across the top of the bread cabinet and a safety catch on the drawer with all the batteries. Cartoon characters are everywhere — on plates, spoons, Roan's placemat, and the spaghetti shapes themselves. You crack open a can and place a pan over the burner.
"What do you want with them, princess? A dinner roll?"
She wraps herself around your legs. "Two dinner rolls."
"Yeah? You must be hungry from all the running around this morning."
When you'd dropped her off, her and her friend Jordan had decided they needed to run a race around the playground. You'd cheered from the sidelines.
"Can you pick me up?" she whines.
You drop the wooden spoon you'd been stirring her spaghetti with into the pan and look down at her pleading pout. "Aw, yeah, I'm sorry."
You pick her up and find her head quickly buried in your neck. She's almost as warm as the stovetop. You work your hand against her head and feel her temperature, concerned for a moment.
"I thought maybe you were sick like daddy, then, but you feel okay," you say softly, stroking curls back from her face. She's started hiding behind her hair like her dad more often. "Come out, I wanna see your lovely face."
Roan lifts her chin.
"That's what your dad said to me when we met. I'd never heard that word before I met you," you tell her.
"What word?"
"'Lovely,'" you say.
She smiles with you for a couple of seconds but then it falters, and she looks at your necklace instead. A gift from her and her dad for mother's day. You'd cried for hours.
"What's the matter?" you ask, eyebrows pinching together.
"Nothing."
You readjust your grip on her hips and lean back against the counter to stop from dropping her. She's getting heavier every single day.
"Are you sure? You can tell me."
Roan shrugs. It's adorable, though her next words are heartbreaking. "I don't know," she admits.
"Are you feeling sick?"
She shakes her head but won't look at you. You hold onto her tight and wait for her to continue, if she's even going to, the clock on the wall ticking in the quiet, the smell of spaghetti sauce sticky in your nose.
"Are you sad about something? Did you… have an accident?"
She shakes her head again. "No, I didn't. It's 'coz… I feel bad."
"But not sick?"
"Not sick."
"Oh no," you murmur, biting the inside of your bottom lip as her small face crumples. "Please tell me, Ro. I don't mind what it is, I promise."
"I feel bad," she says again. "I miss dad."
You feel your eyebrows jump. It makes sense for her to miss him, he's hardly awake when she's been home and they haven't had much time together all week. It's a sudden change. You feel very guilty very quickly for not realising it.
"I'm sorry," you tell her genuinely.
"I miss you, too. We don't have our hug after school now."
Your guilt amplifies by a thousand. You haven't been spending that time with her after school, too busy checking on your bed bound partner.
"Aw, Roan, I'm sorry, I've just been so worried about daddy, I didn't mean to forget."
"You've been giving daddy hugs," she says insistently.
You lean back further to take in her face. Her cheeks are red with blush, whether that be blood rush from embarrassment or injustice, you're unsure. She's frowning at your chin, eyes flicking up to meet yours. When she realises you're watching her she looks away and starts wiggling to be put down again.
"Roan, it's okay," you start, arms crossing over her back. You angle your face to get her attention, holding her gaze. Pretty brown eyes edged in dark, long eyelashes like her dad's. "It's okay, bub. Don't wriggle, I wanna talk to you. Can I talk to you?"
She pouts some more. You pout back, bringing a hand up to the back of her head.
"I'm sorry I haven't been giving you as much attention as you dad this week," you say. You want to explain how hard it's been to handle everything by yourself, but you don't think it's the kind of thing she should ever have to worry about. "I'm really sorry, Roan, daddy's been so sick that I've been thinking about him all the time when I needed to be thinking about you too. I didn't mean to make you feel bad." Feel bad, feel jealous, feel upset by your redirected affection. "I love you so much. I didn't mean to forget our hugs, but it's okay if you're mad."
Her spirits are lifted pretty swiftly after that. "We can hug again when daddy's not sick?" she asks.
"We can hug right now!" you say urgently, carding your hand through her hair.
"On the couch?"
"Yeah, princess, on the couch. You can even eat your dinner on it if you promise not to tell dad."
"You'll eat dinner with me?" she asks, suspicious.
No tricks. "I promise."
She smiles, a mirror image of her dad and all his mischief and her relief clear. "Okay, good, because I missed you and Teddy missed you and I didn't getta tell you about the rabbit we saw at school today. It was this big and it had pink eyes."
-
You smile at her, a mixture of love and guilt. You're lucky to have a daughter like her, forgiving and patient, and you're lucky her dad did such an amazing job at making her that way. Rest assured, you won't forget your after school hugs again, even if Eddie's two bad coughs from the ER.
He appears an hour later to find you snuggled up on the couch, jealous and petty about it as he slots himself between you both. You and Roan hold hands over his chest. Munson cuddle piles are the best.

Ways People Will be Killed by Climate Change:
-Thirst: Amnesty International says 2 billion people will see their water access severely and incredibly diminished. In the Horn of Africa, people are only finding 1/4 of the water they had before.
-Hunger: Many people will die from malnutrition. Many more people will die from chronic undernutrition. So many sources I have read have stated that food supplies will greatly diminish due to climate change. This will be due to an increase in floods, rising sea levels eating up land and causing salinity in the dry land that remains, increased droughts, dry places getting too dry and wet places getting too wet, overheating, storms, extreme weather, unpredictable weather, a decrease in soil fertility caused by loss in biodiversity, cold snaps coming earlier and earlier into the growing season in northern countries, erosion washing away farmland, increased pests due to the inability of the environment to control pests, the list goes on. 345 million people worldwide already have acute (not moderate, not high, but acute) levels of hunger, in large part due to climate change.
-Heat Waves: Over 1.5 billion people live in places where they constantly face the upper limits of heat that the human body can tolerate. As the earth warms, heat waves will become far more frequent and many people will die from them.
-Cold: As the polar vortex becomes looser and looser, many more people in the more northern parts of the world will be subjected to extreme cold and will die due to it, especially poor people.
-Natural Disasters: Storms, floods, fires, tornadoes, hurricanes, landslides, and more will greatly increase in both frequency and severity, killing many people.
-Poverty: More than 100 million people will be pushed into extreme poverty by 2030 alone due to climate change. By 2030 alone, and this number will only increase as time goes on. Note here that I said extreme poverty. Not multidimensional poverty, which is also very deadly and torturous, not acute multidimensional poverty, which is incredibly deadly, but extreme poverty, the worst form of poverty of all. Even greater numbers of people will be pushed into multidimensional and acute multidimensional poverty.
-War: As resources dwindle, there will be wars over the little remaining fertile land, the little remaining water, the few remaining pastures. These wars will also get many people killed.
-Far Right Extremism: Increased displacement, climate refugees (due to the crowding of people into areas that are still cool enough to live in, because many places, like Australia, will become too hot to sustain human life), decreased wealth flowing to the middle class, and other factors will increase fascism and far right ideology. This will lead to increased hate crimes, perhaps greatly so, and this will lead to more people dying.
-Epidemics, pandemics, new and old diseases: As the capacity of the environment to do pest control decreases, disease carriers will increase and diseases like malaria, Dengue fever, West Nile virus, and more will increase. As natural spaces get degraded, animals will become less healthy and diseases among animals will increase. This will lead to an increase in new diseases crossing over from animals to humans and to an increase in new diseases being created in animals.
-Homelessness: As more people lose their homes due to storms, floods, and other natural disasters, there will be an increase in homelessness and more people will die due to the risks of being unhoused.
-Suicide: The degradation in natural spaces will cause mental health among members of communities that are closely tied to the natural environment to worsen, leading to increased suicides. This will be amplified due to the fact that communities closely tied to the environment such as Indigenous communities and Afro-Latino communities are often already marginalized and already face risks to their mental health. Like for example most members of the religion I am a part of already have at least one mental illness, and we rely on our connection to our Parent, the earth, to help us heal ourselves and build better lives for ourselves and our children. If the earth is dead many of us will be too. And we’re actually really privileged compared to say, Indigenous people (though some of us are Indigenous but not me), so imagine how much worse it would be to be part of an even more marginalized group that is closely tied to the environment. -Pollution: Increased use of fossil fuels will lead to increased air pollution. 9 million people already die each year due to air pollution. This will only grow worse as the amount of greenhouse gases and other harmful gases builds up in the atmosphere.
-Not Having Enough Nutrients: Calories aren’t the only thing the human body needs, nutrients are incredibly important too. The climate crisis will destroy the health of the ocean, due to acidification, rising water temperatures, and changed weather conditions and water flow. This will kill many fish. 3 billion people rely on fish for their main source of protein, because of how cheap it is compared to other sources of protein. Many of these people will not be able to get the fish they need and will lack the vital nutrients the fish provide them, which will lead to many deaths.
-Decrease in Social Cohesion: The natural environment teaches so many of us to be good people. Without healthy nature, many of the new generations won’t take into their souls the necessity of helping each other. If less of us help each other, more people will die. I’m going to get a bit religious now. So look at this paragraph with an open mind. The earth is our Parent, who we all came from and who we all live on. If the earth is unhealthy, the people will be too, and if the people are unhealthy, the earth will be too. Like any healthy parent-child relationship, our well-being is tied into Their well-being and Their well-being is tied into ours. But it’s not just my religion that says that the people need a healthy planet, it’s many religions all over the world. And it’s not just many religions all over the world that say this, but science says this too. So if you care about social justice at all, you have to care about climate change.

I’m also going to do one for sicknesses in general, rather than just colds.
January 🎄
So many people get sick right after the holidays, after exposure to countless colds and germs, and the stress of the season. Maybe a relative was sick, or maybe someone at Walmart while you were doing your last-minute Christmas shopping. Either way, you’re down with a bad head cold.
A stuffy, runny nose
Sneezes that are so tickly they coax more sneezes out.
Every time you sniffle, you can feel congestion going down the back of your sore throat 😣
Headache from constant sneezing and coughing. It throbs with every stifled sneeze, but you can’t stop stifling because then someone else might catch your germs and come down with a bad cold of their own.
What would a winter cold be without chills? And a fever just high enough to make you feel sooo sickkkkk 😩
February ❄️
I catch the messiest colds ever in February, I don’t know why. Like, there was only one February (2021) since I can remember that I didn’t get an awful cold. Idk why 😬 oop
Potential low-grade fever, but constant chills.
Achy throat, head, chest, and basically everything else,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
Nose is completely stuffed up, but somehow runs like a faucet? 🤨 messy af
Sneezing continuously, getting rid of a ton of thick, gooey snot, but still not doing anything to help the congestion.

So many people are getting sick as the weather starts to change and snow starts to melt, kicking off allergy season. Sneezy season pushes on.
Headache
Chills, but no fever
Congestion. Plugged, snotty nose and sneezing, a cough, discomfort in general. You are a complete snot monster, but you can’t help it. You can only blame whoever gave you such a horrible cold.

April showers bring May flowers, but they also bring bouts of spring colds. The weather is beginning to get nicer, but you have to be stuck in bed with a bad cold.
Fever and aches. Not the kind of fever that makes you solely cold, but the kind that makes you sweat and have goosebumps simultaneously. As for aches, think head, throat, chest, legs, arms, everything.
A head that’s so stuffed up that the sufferer can’t breathe, let alone sneeze normally. With every breath, they can feel everything shifting grossly inside of their head.

Why do I feel like everyone catches the sniffles at the end of the school year?
A runny, slightly sniffly nose that’s just stuffy enough for them to sound congested, and for their exhaled to feel uncomfortably hot against their skin.
Sneezing, a result of the snotty, itchy nose.

June 💦
Summer break is prime time to swim, but the earlier in the season you do it, the colder the water will be. Keep this in mind, because swimming in cold water can result in a nasty cold.
It would start off with chills. Your body would try to warm up, but eventually a fever would start to set in.
Your nose would begin running when you were in the water, but it wouldn’t stop when you got out. It would completely stuff you up within a few hours.
A headache/body aches from shivering for hours on end. No amounts of medicine, blankets, or hot tea can warm you up.
Sneezing excessively. By excessively, I mean, not being able to stop and needing to wipe your face after each one because they are so messy.
Coughing, but only after you blow your nose, because of the irritation.
A sore throat and glands from all of the sneezing and coughing and being sick in general.
July 🔥
Everyone around seems to be sick with something. Staying up on the Fourth of July might have been your body’s last straw. Say hello to a gross, streaming summer cold.
A fever, which causes you to sweat and shiver simultaneously. It’s ninety degrees, whatever. A heavy sweatshirt would make you feel better.
An extremely stuffy nose which only runs at inconvenient times.
Stuffy sneezes, which the sufferer is constantly trying to ward off so the others won’t notice the monster of a cold they’ve come down with.
A bad, congested cough, just to make hiding their illness harder.
Bonus points! The sufferer is constantly ducking off to blow their nose or cough away from the rest of the group because being sick embarrasses them.
August 🏵
One of the hottest months of the year, hypothetically a month you shouldn’t get sick during. But after a long, busy summer, your immune system needed a day off. Unfortunately, that day was long enough to land you with a stuffy head cold. Oops.
A nose so stuffy that sniffling does absolutely nothing. No matter how hard you try, nothing moves, untiiillllllll it starts running uncontrollably.
Stuffy sneezes to partner with the congestion 😌
Exhaustion. That’s it, exhaustion.
September 📓
Everyone is going back to school and getting exposed to all sorts of new germs. Despite best efforts to avoid sick people, a snotty cold is practically inevitable.
There just had to be a very runny and stuffy nose

Imagine getting caught in a cold autumn rainstorm, getting chilled to the bone, and coming down with a vicious cold as a result of it.

The darkest, dampest month, perfect for getting sick. The snow is getting more frequent, and it’s not uncommon for you to get stuck in it waiting for a bus. Once you get on the bus, you’re in close quarters with a bunch of sick people, like it or not. The worst chest cold of your life is on its way.

A sore throat and hoarse voice
A ton of congestion and a bad cough that makes the congestion and hoarseness obvious
Even the sneezes sound hoarse and stuffy 🥺
On top of that, a headache and fever because of how sick you are. The fever makes you shiver and sweat and sleep and feel absolutely miserable.

PART ONE:
The smells stimulated the senses and evoked memories. They awakened extremely happy and sad emotions. They were able to break a person, as well as mend him anew. And his scent; soft, youthful, tender, loving, pleasant, wonderful summoned tears.
The sky was shrouded in fading gloom, misty rays of sunlight peeked from over the horizon, and rain dripped down from the clouds, slowly trickling down the windows of the abandoned hut. The fire from the fireplace barely reached Sakura's thirsty hands for warmth.
A quiet snoring coming from the side declared to the girl that she was not alone. Sakura shifted on her knees, hovering over Sasuke. The tattered blanket slid off her shoulder, causing her to shiver.
She shook his shoulder.
"Sasuke-kun, it will be dawn soon."
The boy twisted to the other side, making a sign of displeasure. Repeating the action, Sakura casually brushed her hand over his forehead to see if he had developed a fever from the recent weather conditions. However, Sasuke's temperature was normal.
"Sasuke-kun." she whispered, as if a slightly higher tone of voice was going to destroy the peace and quiet that reigned in the hut.
A peace they had not experienced in a long time.
The fourteen-year-old finally stood up, combing his hand through the hair. Through this movement, his scent rose, reaching Sakura's nostrils and bringing back memories of home - home they left behind to survive.
He turned his black irises to Sakura, looking closely at her face. In embarrassment, she threw the blanket over the head, then handed the fleece to Sasuke. The boy accepted the garment and threw it over his shoulders, standing up and helping her.
"Put the jacket over the sweatshirt." he said, putting out the fire.
"Now it's your turn."
Sakura held the warm sheepskin tightly. They exchanged every day, as they had no way to get another jacket. It had been winter when they fled from Konoha, but now early spring had begun, and the cold was not abating at all. They couldn't get sick.
"Don't argue, Sakura."
A loud gust of wind sounded outside. Sasuke put on his shoes, walked to the window and checked the area with the sharingan. Finding that nothing threatened them, he went outside. After a moment, Sakura found herself at his side.
"Where are we headed now, Sasuke-kun?"
With a sigh, she took in the sight the forest in front of her. It looked exactly the same as all the previous ones. It was hard for Sakura to grasp where they were, or what they were specifically looking for. Fleeing Konoha was a last resort, but meeting Sasuke on her way was a coincidence. When her foot first stepped outside the village, she thought she would have to wander alone in the woods and seek shelter, but then he stood before her eyes and told her to run. Unfortunately, they didn't find Naruto or Kakashi on the way.
"To the west." he answered hesitantly, still tired after three hours of sleep.
"What is there?"
"I don't know. Let's hope it's peaceful."
He walked in front of her, stepping on the wet grass. Sakura ran up to Sasuke stopping him. She wrapped her arms around his wrist.
"Sasuke-kun, tell me one thing." she pushed the wet strands away from the face "We've been going back and forth for three months and I still don't know what we're looking for. What is our goal?"
A woodpecker began to tap against the trunk of a tree, piercing through the noise of the rain. A ray of sunlight fell on Sakura's body, illuminating her as if she were like an angel sent to earth.
"Your goal is to survive..."
"I didn't choose such a goal." she interjected, puzzled.
"...And mine is to put you away in a safe place and...".
"You want to leave me!"
She took a step back, pulling her eyebrows together in a strange feeling of sadness that began to gather in her heart.
"Can I finish?" he sighed resignedly. Sakura nodded embarrassed, "Sakura, I don't care what happened in Konoha and how terrible it was. My plans haven't changed, but I have no intention of involving you in them."
"So you mean to tell me that all this time you were looking for a good place to leave me? And I already thought that we... you..." she mouthed, turning away to avoid showing Sasuke the tears slowly forming.
He didn't even try to contradict her words. Sasuke simply stared at Sakura, waiting for her to come to terms with the facts. She heard him crouching on a, most likely wet, stone. Clenching her hands into fists, she turned to keep walking, but then something hard hit her in the back of the head.
When she woke up, her head hurt from the end of the neck to the very tip. Cold chills shook Sakura. The girl struggled to open her eyes, but the room she was in was dark. From the right came the sound of dripping water, and from the left came murmuring.
The fear of speaking up and revealing that she was already conscious took over her body. Because what if they were waiting for her to wake up?
She tilted the head back, accidentally hitting herself on a metal pipe. The sound echoed, and Sakura held her breath.
"I'll get you out of here in a minute." she heard a familiar voice and breathed a sigh of relief.
"Sasuke-kun, are you all right? Do you know where we are and what they want from us?"
"How was I supposed to get such information, Sakura?" the voice of Sasuke seemed somewhat annoyed.
Having checked that she had all her clothes on, because in places like this you never know, Sakura relaxed her shoulders as she listened to Sasuke try to cut the cord binding his wrists.
"...I don't know." she replied already more to herself than to him.
The darkness was suddenly cut by a streak of light. Sakura squinted hard, trying to spot the newcomers. In the doorway she spotted two massive men and a woman with wounds on her cheeks. The smiles on their faces frightened her.
"You guys are finally up. We waited a long time for you." man with the beard indicated to his companions to untie them.
Woman approached Sakura and began a cursory examination of her body.
"Don't touch us." Sasuke hissed through clenched teeth.
Turning in that direction, Sakura noticed bruises and hematomas on exposed parts of the boy's body.
"Oi, calm down. You'll soon have your moment to say goodbye to your friend."
Sasuke jerked back.
"There will be no goodbye, it's sooner you..."
Sakura heard the shrill sound of flesh hitting metal and the hiss of pain. She didn't want to turn around to see Sasuke curled up in pain.
"Sit down, Uchiha."
Sasuke sent the bearded man a look of red eyes.
"Don't look at me with that sharingan of yours, it won't do you any good." the kidnapper took a step forward "We caught you because first of all you two were defenseless, and secondly you Uchiha will go for a good price at the market." he sent a morbid smile in the boy's direction "And your friend will stay with us for a while, after which we will also sell her. With hair like that, everyone..."
Everyone fell silent, watching in horror as Sasuke slammed a piece of metal pipe, which he had cut the cord with earlier, into the head of the man standing in front of him.
The man fell dead. Blood dripped from his head, forming a large stain on the ground. Woman flinched imperceptibly when Sasuke's eyes reached hers.
Sakura kicked the woman with her last strength, knocking her backwards, and and then Sasuke ran quickly to her and cut the woman's throat.
The Sharingan flashed in front of Sakura's face, and despite the immense anger steaming around Sasuke's figure, for that one moment when his gaze fell on her, Sasuke's eyes softened.
Only to return a second later to the earlier fury painted on his face when the last captor spoke up.
"That was enough for me. Good job." the man began to approach.
"Don't come up," hissed Sasuke.
"In case you haven't noticed, you're in my place. Orders won't do any good." he didn't stop the steps.
"I warned you."
Sasuke pushed himself off the ground with the feet, leaving only dust behind. Sakura could barely see his silhouette, blending with the air. His opponent fought him evenly. They exchanged blows, and Sakura sat in one place, unable to do anything.
Sasuke risked his life to get them out of there, she had to help him. Sakura desperately searched for something sharp nearby that could cut the ropes. To her anger, there was nothing, and Sasuke was losing more and more strength.
Breaths, groans of pain and screams filled the room. Sakura had had enough. With one stroke, she snapped the cord, suppressing the release of any sound. The pain was excruciating.
Looking around, out of the corner of her eye she noticed a metal baton lying on the ground. She sprinted over to it, picked it up and, returning to Sasuke and the kidnapper, struck the man in the back of the head with all her strength. The man didn't even have time to realize what was happening, and he already fell to the floor.
"Is-is he dead?" she asked, somewhat horrified that she might have killed a person.
Sakura was a shinobi, of course, but the vision of depriving someone of their life at such a young age was slightly surreal to her.
"He is breathing. Barely, but still." Sasuke rose from the ground, wobbled backward by the amount of wounds on his body and the lack of strength. He took Sakura's hand, "We'd better run."
They left behind carnage, death and redness. The stairs went on forever, making it difficult to get out of this maze, where one step in the wrong direction could mean further pain and suffering.
Sakura didn't hear any shouting or orders, as if the place was shrouded in complete silence. No one was even chasing them.
Running out into the daylight, Sasuke continued to drag Sakura behind him. She didn't look back, leaving another place where she almost lost her life. Difficult memories from Konoha yearned to escape the drawer she had put them in, but Sakura closed them again before they had a chance to flood her mind.
"Never again." Sasuke's voice seemed weakened "Never distract me again."
Sakura blinked rapidly, pulling her eyebrows together. She tried to slow down, but Sasuke wouldn't let her.
"Why are you blaming me?"
In response, she received only an angry look from over his shoulder.
The cold wind chilled them. They should find a warm place as soon as possible before they froze, making themselves sick.
Sasuke stumbled, falling into a tree. Sakura supported him from the side and stopped him when the boy wanted to run further.
"You need to rest."
"I don't need rest."
"Sasuke-kun..." a quiet whisper escaped her lips.
Weakness was not something Sasuke liked. In fact, he hated it. Therefore, when Sakura looked at him with those cursed eyes of hers, in which he saw compassion, he brought his face closer to hers so she could see him better.
"You see that!" she gasped at the tone of Sasuke's voice "If I had been stronger, I would have done it without any major wounds. And it's all thanks to you!" he caught her face as she tried to avoid his gaze "Maybe if you hadn't gone with me I would have been stronger by now. Maybe I would have been able to defeat my brother soon, if only I didn't have you on my mind." Sakura pulled her face from Sasuke's grasp and took a step to the side "Maybe it would have been better if you had stayed away from me."
"I didn't ask you to take me with you."
They stood motionless. Both of their fingers were frostbitten, their cheeks turned red from the cold, and their feet tingled. Sasuke swallowed his saliva loudly, raising his eyes to the sky. Sakura saw the invisible mist disappear from his irises, restoring the deep blackness. His outlined jaw clenched from clenching the teeth, and Sakura cast one last look at Sasuke's face before starting to walk away.
"Where are you going?"
"To find a new home."
The rain flew from the sky again. It drowned out all other sounds, as if it wanted to be the only thing in focus. Sakura was disappearing from Sasuke's sight, and the vision of her somewhere far away did not please him at all.
"Stop." she didn't even deign to look at him "I said stop, Sakura! You're not going anywhere!"
"You're changing your mind fast!" she exclaimed, wiping drops of water from her face, most likely mixing with the tears.
Suddenly she felt a firm grip on her shoulder.
"You'd sooner die than find the village. I won't let you go alone."
She was almost about to answer Sasuke, but then lightning flashed, cutting through the clouds, followed by a powerful bang that shook Sakura.
She took another look at his face and, seeing the wandering madness in his eyes, decided to move after Sasuke, fearing that if she left him alone now, he wouldn't be the same person the next time they met; the same Sasuke she loved.

NGORONGORO INFORMATION The Ngorongoro Conservation Area is one of Africa's best places to see wildlife. It is also a popular tourist destination in Tanzania. WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO VISIT NGORONGORO? Because it is wildebeest breeding season in the area, JANUARY is the best month to visit Ngorongoro Crater.
