Wait… I get that Venus’s warning to Reyna about how “no demigod shall heal your heart” hit her hard because it meant she and Jason wouldn’t be together, but it also didn’t completely rule out A LOT of her people because like… so many of them weren’t demigods, they were legacies.

And okay, yeah, maybe that could be explained but, no not really because in BoO, when Reyna tells Piper about it, Piper says: “There is someone out there for you, maybe it’s not a demigod. Maybe it’s a mortal or… or I don’t know. But when it’s meant to happen, it will.” (492)

Like… the narrative literally forgets that legacies as a concept existed??

And no, it’s not that Piper isn’t aware of that or was distracted by Leo’s death because: “Piper kept busy helping Reyna and Annabeth coordinate between the Greeks and Romans. To Piper's surprise, the other two girls valued her skills as a go-between to smooth over any conflicts.” (489)

Now, Piper gets the short end of the stick when it comes to being written with nuance (hello one off lines about her best friendship with Hazel with talking, crying and sword fighting in HoH), but we’re meant to assume that she’s doing more than is actually written, and she’d have to be aware of these dynamics between demigods and legacies, that SHOULD have been a significant element here since all of Camp Half-Blood are demigods while a large, if unknown, portion of Camp Jupiter are legacies.

But no, the conflicts are like: “Piper did manage to return some Roman helmets that mysteriously made their way into the camp store. She also kept a fight from breaking out between the children of Mars and the children of Ares over the best way to kill a hydra.” (489)

Like.

The narrative itself goes out of its way to make a one to one comparison between the camps in terms of how directly descended from the gods the camper are. With the same god’s two aspects and everything! Ignoring the other descendants of Mars!

But actually!! No, in the same book they do bring up legacies! Nico asks Reyna: “So… is your whole family descended from Bellona? I thought you and Hylla were her daughters, not legacies.” (284)

So why? Is it so inconsistent? (This is a rhetorical question, I know why but feel free to add more)

And all he had to do was change the word ‘demigod’ to ‘hero’. At least for Reyna’s situation.

TLDR: Legacies? Wasted potential. Reyna? Victim of inconsistent writing, vol 132.

Jupiter was…well, more responsible as a Roman god than he had been when he was Zeus. Mars became a lot more important and disciplined."

I don't fully disagree with them. Honestly, Mars does seem better than Ares. Ares is like a savage barbarian, while Mars is like an honourable but bitter general. We don't see many other roman gods to compare to their greek counterparts (rick riordan really should have shown us more of the roman gods), but Mars alone is infinitely better under the Romans.

Author’s Note: For some reason despite Mars being such a big name among the Romans, it's not a whole lot different then Ares. There are some differences but like...it's wild? Oh boi, if you think being a child of Ares has its stereotypes, just imagine being a child of Mars. Like being the child of Jupiter and Venus, once it comes out that you’re a child of Mars, you’re tacked on the same expectations, respect, and envy that comes with being your godly father’s kid.

After Jupiter, the Romans saw Mars as one of the greatest gods and as a guardian, who brought honour and strength in battle; so you’re going to have a lot of eyes on you where they expect you to be the most honourable and best Roman soldier. And because Mars is the father of Romulus, that only adds to the pressure of being the embodiment of Rome and its values. 

Ironically, not only the people of Rome expect you to be the best honourable and best Roman soldier, they want you to be able to end a battle and fight as swift as possible. Not because to end battles sooner, but to ensure peace faster; as Mars represents military power as a way to secure peace. Now what that peace means is up to interpretation to the Senate, your superiors, and people in general but peace nonetheless.

Unlike Ares, Mars represents the strategy and skill based of warfare, taken away from Athena/Minerva. You’re adept at all kinds of battle but its accepted that each child of Mars and their descendents to have specialised skills of warfare; whether it's spearmanship, battle planning, etc.

However, for all your skills and dexterity, you’re not very good at crafts and the arts. Even if you want to learn how to maintain your weapons, you have to pass those along to more adept hands because Mars is a direct opposite to Minerva, who is known solely as the goddess of crafts and art, which war always tramples upon. Unless it's the Art of War, your hands in the arts are few and far in between. You’re just going to have to appreciate the arts as an audience.

"but how do you watch something accidentally with french subtitles?" you may ask, and i may tell you that it's simple, because i love english, english is fun and versatile and incredibly useful in this world, but listening to some dutch music recently reminded me how much consuming dutch art for a change feels like doing stretches for my brain (i don't really notice what i'm missing out on if i don't do it, but it feels SO good when i do), and that had me pondering once again how to incorporate some german into my diet in a natural way, because if dutch is my language, then german belongs to people i love, german is the one used to tell family stories, german is a language that feels like home but that i use so little it always takes a few days of just listening before i remember how to speak without feeling like an idiot, and so i thought to myself, well, i know bad buddy has a whole list of subtitle options, and perhaps i can pull off a really neat trick here and get my fill of german while also spending some time with thai (with which i am having a torrid love affair this year) through a show i know almost by heart at this point, because i can process the german fast enough to still be able to listen to what i'm hearing (the spoken thai), and then as a bonus, i'd get to sidestep english entirely for a few brief but glorious moments, which is a thing so rare it's almost unheard of, and that would just be a win-win-win. however! it turns out german is not one of the many, many languages offered on youtube as a subtitle option for bad buddy (which is of course fine because in a grand way, truly, why would it). and they do happen to have french, which i then of course had to click just for fun almost as a joke just to see it play for a minute or so and definitely not any longer than that, and as it turns out, on a practical is-this-doable-for-me level french in this context worked out way better than i thought it might, which is why i got sucked in immediately, easily fascinated as i am. but this is also a language that has me reading just slowly enough that it takes all my attention to have any hope at staying caught up with the speed of the dialogue, which amounts to a situation that is, you know, not making me feel much closer to my german grandmother (or making me feel very much at all for that matter, because on the whole i have a deeply impersonal relationship with french), but that IS very unexpectedly making me think fondly of my high school french teacher who once wrote under an assignment that he really hoped i'd choose to do something with languages. and this is probably not what he meant, but i suppose i am doing that, yes. both by choice and because i stumbled and tripped and now i've watched several episodes of a french subtitled thai show in an attempt to find german input because i was listening to dutch music.

I just realised why Camp Jupiter is seperate from New Rome. It's for training. It's so they get attacked. It's to keep them vigilant. Camp Half-Blood is a safe haven where you learn to fight. Camp Jupiter is getting thrown into the gladiator pit and being told to literally "conquer or die". They aren't supposed to be safe. They're suppose to fight for their lives for ten years straight and then they've proved themselves good enough to be safe.
