This is my official Batfam Magical Girl AU Masterpost (everyone clapped)
(image updated: 9/21/24)
I’m going to do a brief overview and then go into more details for those interested.
Bruce being from old money (and apparently being connected to Camelot) inherited a mysterious mineral with unknown properties. In its raw form it’s very unassuming, but when cut like gemstones and added to accessories it can be harnessed into a tool. By altering the mineral into a wearable item it allows the magic within to be channeled. The magic of the mineral connects with its wielder to create an outfit and (typically) a weapon. These outfits do not grant the wearer special abilities outside of the transformation and the weapon, but when worn the wearer is granted (what is basically) hammerspace and a nearly impenetrable outfit. The uniform granted is not something they can alter the appearance of but will change gradually overtime to reflect how the wielder has grown.
This mineral will henceforth be known as Arcanium. It operates on Kryptonite logic in that it’s— allegedly— super rare but also shows up whenever the plot needs it. (I’m aware it shares a name with a card game, but I wanted my Kryptonite spoof)
Martha Wayne unknowingly started the cycle by turning— what she thought was a rare gemstone— into a brooch. She died shortly after having it made and Alfred held onto it in her memory. Like canon Bruce goes on his journey of self-exploration to train. When he comes back he enacts his plan the way he does in Batman: Year One, where he goes out in basically just make-up, and it goes poorly. He wanders his manor trying to formulate a strategy and is drawn to his parent’s room and finds his mother’s brooch. Cue the first magical girl transformation. From there he alters the brooch to fit his bat aesthetic and the Batman Brooch is born.
Dick comes into his life the same way as canon. Bruce takes him in as a ward, Dick tries to track down Zucco on his own, etc. Bruce decides to use the other raw sample of Arcanium to turn into a second magical artifact. He lets Dick pick the theme, and thus the Robin Pendant is born. The rest is history.
(Before I continue I want to warn that I’m making shit up as I go, so some of this is subject to change as I move forward.)
The Robin Pendant is passed down from Robin to Robin. Each Robin got their own unique look while using it. Following canon, Dick and Bruce have their falling out and Dick gives up the Robin Pendant in a moment of anger. In this au I think Dick, not having the pendant to fall back on, tries to lead a vigilante-free life, but of course falls back into it. During a fight he somehow manages to stumble across Arcanium in its raw form. Recognizing it he takes it with him. Like Nightwing: Year One he has his conversation with Superman and decides to become his own hero. Using his knowledge of Arcanium from his years with Bruce he creates his own magical artifact and becomes Nightwing.
This is a good place to interject that I’m not changing any of their hero names. I was asked about it a couple times due to the caption, “Red Bow & Sailor Nightwing” on my Dick and Jason designs. It was just a silly caption, because I didn’t want to simply state “Jason and Dick Magical Girl au.” But being serious, I don’t really see a reason to change their names, with the exception of maybe Red Hood, seeing as I didn’t give him a red hood. My au operates on Sailor Moon logic where despite the lack of masks no one recognizes them, and it’s just vaguely explained by magic. I think it would be funny if Bruce chose to wear a mask anyway because he’s that paranoid, but we’ll see when I actually design him. Anyway point is Red Hood is lacking a red hood, maybe he secretly has a red hood on his jacket or maybe he really does go by Red Bow, I’ll leave that up to interpretation.
Arcanium does not just accidentally appear. At the end of the day it’s still a mineral and it’s not sentient, but the magic has an element of “the wand chooses the user.” It’s not so much a “chosen one thing,” so much as the magic can sense intention. It doesn’t care about the morality of the user, the magic is more seeking a symbiotic connection. (Meaning yes rogues can in fact wield artifacts.) Simply put, it wants a host that will be able to wield it. In its raw form the magic is dormant but it seeks to be… not dormant, so when it finds those who actually have the potential to create an artifact and use it, it reveals itself. It was not a coincidence that Martha had the inclination to have the brooch made, it was not a coincidence that Bruce was drawn to his parent’s room, and it was not a coincidence that Dick found Arcanium in the alleyway.
Each of the Bats have their origin moments with their own magical artifacts. I don’t have the whole timeline down, but I will say there was a lot of drama between Tim and Damian, because Tim was forced to hand over the pendant. Even though he technically relinquished it, emotionally the connection wasn’t severed. No one was sure if the transition would work, but Arcanium responds to whoever needs it more and therefore who will use it more. Like canon, Tim is having an awful time during that era. On top of all of it he’s had his title stripped from him and he can’t even argue because if it wasn’t the right move the pendant wouldn’t have responded to Damian. Dick tries to comfort him by telling him that Arcanium will appear for him when he’s ready, but Tim is furious and impatient. So like a well-adjusted person he decides he’s going to engineer his own magical artifact artificially. It goes as well as his attempt to clone Kon does. It’s not until Tim starts to get back on his feet that Arcanium presents itself to him. My thinking is that while Arcanium finds its users when they need it most, Tim’s case is abnormal. His acquisition of the pendant was unconventional from the start since he showed up and demanded to take on the Robin role. Arcanium is drawn to individuals who will actually use its properties. Tim tends to rely more on his own detective work, which renders the pendant’s properties pretty moot. Especially when he’s going off the deep end, he becomes a hermit meaning a) he wouldn’t really need/use Arcanium’s properties and b) he inadvertently limited his own chances of stumbling across it “in the wild.”
In a similar vein I believe Barbara’s journey is abnormal in that she forged her own Batgirl artifact that operates a little differently than the others, seeing as she made it without Bruce’s influence. After the accident she shelved it, maybe she passed it down to Cass, but eventually she gets it back. She created the Oracle identity without it, and for a long time the Batgirl artifact is something she avoids using, until she gets the idea to combine it with her computer to create a magic computer… sort of. She gets a uniform that is basically connected to the computer.
Going back to Damian needing the Robin Pendant more, its reaction to his acquisition was unique. As I mentioned previously the suits typically provide a weapon, well Damian is the exception. Unlike all the other Robin’s Damian didn’t need more weapons in his life, what he needed was guidance. For the first time the pendant granted Damian a magical animal guardian, which is how he gets Alfred the Cat in this au. Despite being an animal lover Damian is extremely pissed at this development. He wanted dual swords or a scarier animal at least. He can’t formally communicate with Alfred the Cat but he understands him intrinsically, though Alfred the Cat seems to be able to understand human speech somewhat. Only Damian seems to be able to truly understand Alfred the Cat. (Cue the antics of his siblings trying to figure out what the cat means or trying to control him in any capacity.) Besides being an animal, Alfred the Cat is also unique in that he doesn’t dissipate when Damian isn’t in uniform the way that the weapons do. Like the weapons he can be summoned by the pendant, but he seems to have existed prior to the pendant’s creation. (I’m toying with the idea that while in uniform, the cat would also get some sort of uniform.)
Before I get into Duke and his abnormalities, I want to address the Speedsters in this au. It’ll make sense after.
So the Flash. I want to say I don’t know if I will get around to creating full designs for them. I do have plans for Bart and maybe Wally, but I have determined how I want their mechanics to operate in the context of the au. Not all the heroes in this au are “magical girls,” in fact I’ve made the executive decision that you have to be human to wield an artifact. Arcanium may have magic in it, but it doesn’t grant its user magical abilities beyond the uniform itself. The speedsters retain their canon origins, hit by lighting blah blah blah, only with one key difference: they had Arcanium on them when they were hit. Instead of engineering an artifact Arcanium fused with their bodies granting them powers. I want to keep the magic transformation aspect (because it’s not a magical girl au without it), so instead of using a physical artifact as a channel for their powers, it’s instead the act of transforming that serves as a gateway to their speed abilities.
To me it was always important to maintain Batman’s identity of not having super powers and having to rely on engineering, which is why the Batfam have to physically build their artifacts. In a similar way I wanted to retain the integrity of the Flash’s identity of being meta but also still human. Which brings me back to Duke. I know in canon that Duke inherited his abilities, but for the sake of the au I’ve decide that he either had an accident when he was young in which traces of Arcanium fused with him or his parents had it in them and he inherited it from them, but regardless it’s less potent, but operates similar to the Speedsters. For years he couldn’t fully transform or use his powers and it wasn’t until— with Bruce’s guidance— he was able to create an artifact that allowed him to channel his abilities and transform. Even though he is a meta I wanted him to still have some of those Batfam qualities in there.
But what about the Superfam? They’re not human so how do their transformations work? The answer is simple: They’re not “magical girls.” At least not real ones, they’re faking. They’re not human (Kon and Jon are technically half human but they still get their abilities from their Kryptonian DNA), and thus cannot forge a connection with Arcanium. Truthfully I’m about to get silly— even sillier than this au already is— but I have decided that Clark is a fake artifact wielder. I like the idea that Batman has been operating longer than Superman has, so when Clark decided to become a hero in his own right his only example of how to style himself was from the bat themed vigilante, who might as well be a cryptid, operating out of Gotham. Only blurry pictures of him existed, so Clark designed his outfit based on his Kryptonian origins and Batman’s aesthetics. He had no idea about the existence of Arcanium or how it worked. This is also why Kon’s design looks so much like his canon outfit with a few magical girl elements (and definitely not because I think the lines in his canon suit already lend themselves well to a magical girl aesthetic and didn’t want to change much). Later when he gets to know Batman more he learns about the transformations, to which he panics and invents his own transformation using Kryptonian tech (ex: MAWS’s transformation). For years Bruce goes crazy trying to figure out Arcanium’s effects on aliens and if it grants them abilities on top of the ones they’re born with, and if Clark has plans to use it as a weapon, and how he managed to forge the connection in the first place— Clark comes clean as a fake once they reveal their identities to each other.
Side tangent but I find it hilarious that Green Lanterns are— by technicality— already “magical girls,” considering they’re granted magical accessories that give them powers and transform their clothing. Hal is very clear with the JL that he is nothing like Batman and constantly feels the need to assert that he is not a magical artifact wielder. The non-human members of the team still lump them together anyway.
Things I haven’t figured out:
- what each of the batfam’s weapons are
- what each of the magical artifacts are
- what to refer to magical artifact wielders as
Stepping outside the canon(?) lore of the au for a minute, obviously I’m redesigning DC characters using inspiration from a genre, because that’s what “magical girl” is. It’s a genre. This is why I refer to it in quotes and don’t call them magical boys, because I am always referring to it as a genre, which isn’t a gendered thing. However, in universe they wouldn’t call themselves magical anything, the same way the characters of Sailor Moon don’t refer to themselves as magical girls, but rather Sailor Scouts. As of right now I’m sort of just referring to them as artifact wielders, but I feel like Bruce would come up with a better name. On a similar note, throughout this whole thing I’ve been referring to Arcanium in it’s wearable state as an artifact. I don’t know if that’s the best term, but I can’t think of anything better for the generalized form of Arcanium outside of it’s raw state. For now I guess it will be “artifacts” and “artifact wielders.”
- how the wonderfam fits into this
I really can’t think of a reason why Wonder Woman would be a “magical girl” in this au. She was born with abilities, she’s not human, and I can’t see her altering her uniform to match the aesthetic. A transformation would just be a waste of time for her. I could to see maybe Cassie or Donna wanting to match with their respective teams, and perhaps maybe that’s why they would alter their uniforms? All I know is I want see Tim, Kon, Bart and Cassie as a matching “magical girl set.”
Fin… for now.
[I’m just going to put this here preemptively, because I’ve gotten messages about turning my au into fics or tiktok skits. You’re free to use this lore HOWEVER you MUST credit me not just for the designs but for the creation of the lore. I’ve put a lot of time and thought into this and I love that people love it, so I just ask for recognition. If you want to make something that’s inspired by my designs or loosely based on my au, just a simple credit for the inspiration is fine. You’re free to change things this is just how my own au operates. Regardless I would prefer to be tagged so that people can find me but also because I’d love to see other’s work.]

Arthur travels back in time to save Merlin (from becoming a tree) AU
LINKS TO THE OTHER PARTS OF THIS AU HERE: PART 1 , PART2 (You're here) , PART 3
The king of Camelot goes to visit his magic tree before his next battle. This isn't new. He always visits it. But it will be the last time he does it.
Arthur: (caressing the bark of the tree with a hand)It's finally time. I'm sorry it took so long. (sighs) And I'm sorry I have to do this.
He knows he's being selfish. Camelot is better than ever, his people is happy and yet he's going to war, risking this era of peace. A war he knows he won't come back from. But it's necessary.
Gwen: (arriving) Arthur...
Arthur: I won't change my mind, Guinivere
Gwen: I know. I just want to understand. Arthur, why? The price is too high and the chance it might work too slim. And even if it does work, you are risking that everything you know, everything you built will never happen.
Arthur: It's a risk I'm willing to take. I can prevent so many things from happening, not only Merlin's fate, but Gawain's, Elyan's, Lancelot's-
Gwen: Don't pretend you're not doing this just for him, Arthur, I'm not a fool.
Arthur: ...
Gwen: He wouldn't want you to do this. And you know it.
Arthur: Yeah, well, he didn't care about what I wanted when he made that stupid deal.
It's been ten years since Merlin saved his life and was cursed to be a tree forever as a payback. He was now a majestic beautiful tree in the royal garden and the most valuable national treasure in Camelot due to its magical properties: It could give fruits with the ability to cure all ills and the most serious wounds, but also could give ones with the most letal poison. Its wood was the finest. Once it let some branches fall for its king before an important battle and the weapons that were made with them are still as good as new to this day. Though Arthur did his part, he knows Camelot probably would not have obtained the title of the greatest, richest and most prosperous kingdom if it weren't for his Merlin.
However, not everything was sunshine and rainbows. Like every treasure it was also coveted by everyone who wanted to use it for their own selfish purposes. Kingdoms envious of his power sent spies to try to steal its fruits, its branches and even to try to cut it down to leave Camelot defenseless. Others even tried to invade Camelot just to posses the magic tree, but Camelot's army was the strongest in all Albion so they never could and soon they stopped trying.
There was a time they almost got too close though. Once Arthur found a man holding an ax stuck deep in Merlin's trunk. He has gone so mad with fury, he almost beat the man to death if it weren't because his knights stopped him before he made the final blow. He was still livid after that, but he let Gwen handle the man's trial, because he knew he wouldn't be reasonable in the state he was in. In the end the man was sentenced to beheading. It was what the law decreed since touching the King's tree was by law an act of treason. The king who sent the spy had to make a public apology and give monetary compensation to avoid a war. Arthur did make sure the spy's head was cut of with his own ax though. Later, when he was alone with his tree, Arthur cried because he almost lost Merlin again. The king apologised to him over and over again between sobs and cried until he fell asleep at the tree's roots.
It was then when it hit him. One day he would die and there won't be anyone to protect Merlin from greedy people who will only use his power for their own gains. Merlin would be at his new owner's mercy and the one after that, and the one after that, forever without being able to do anything about it. The mere thought made Arthur sick to his stomach.
No, he won't allow that to happen.
Gwen: (with teary eyes) Aren't we happy?
Arthur: Don't say that. You have always made me happy.
Gwen: (laughs weakely) But he made you happier, didn't he?
Arthur: ...
Gwen: You never told me. Which were Merlin's last words.
Arthur: I love you... he said I love you.
Gwen: Oh... (smiles) I get it now. Alright I'll help you. Just promise me something.
Arthur: Anything.
Gwen: Don't feel bad if you can't prevent other people from dying. In fact, you don't have to do it. Just save Merlin.
Arthur: But-
Gwen: No, you have done so much for this kingdom and sacrifice so much. (cradling his face) You owe us nothing and you owe me nothing, alright? Just be happy.
They hugged each other tightly and they share their last kiss and I love you before Arthur finally went to bloodiest battle he'll ever had in his life. And, after killing 100 hundred enemy soldiers with his blade, the king of Camelot died at the early age of forty.
Later Percival and Leon retrieve the king's corpse and bring it before their queen who doesn't share a tear despite being broken inside. She orders for his late husband to be buried next to his tree instead of burned in a pyre, proclaming that's what the king would have wanted. The real reason however is more complex than that.
The night after the funeral, she secretly brings the druids her husband consorted for years to the royal garden for the ritual to be made. Before the tree, as was planned, is the Ancient Round Table of the Ancient Kings.
Druid1: A sword with the blood of 300 hundred man.
Gwen: (gives excalibur to him)
Druid2: Three dragon scales.
Percival: (gives them to her)
Druid3: And the corpse of a king. We have everything.
Leon: Will this really work?
Druid1: This ritual had only worked once in the times of the ancient kings and only because it was done by three of the most powerful sorcerers of that time. We are not that powerful.
Druid2: However, we have a great magic source (she points the tree). So it might work.
It worked! That's Arthur's first thought when he opens his eyes again and finds himself in his room 20 years younger.
....
HIII!! First of all I want to thank you all for giving the first post so much love! I was truly shocked because I didn't think the AU was that good, so I'm really glad you liked it. I hope this kind of sequel/prequel? was of your liking too.
I don't think I'm going to make this a full fic yet, but I can make snippets like this about this AU until then.
What else would like to see happening in this AU? Let me know in the comments or reblogs ;)

Wei Wuxian’s hand jolts, spilling a drop of wine onto the tabletop. “Love?” he croaks, then clears his throat and tries again. “Lan Zh— uh, Hanguang-jun, in love?”
“Have you not heard the story?” the other young woman asks, looking pitying. “You must, it is a truly heartrending tale of star-crossed romance and mutual pining — go to any storyhouse in town, everyone has been requesting a reading of this book.”
“There’s a book?” Wei Wuxian says blankly.
-- In which the junior disciples (namely, Lan Jingyi, Ouyang Zizhen, and a reluctant Lan Sizhui) turn to RPF in an attempt to rehabilitate Wei Wuxian's reputation so that he and Hanguang-jun can get together and get married and live happily ever after. It's... surprisingly effective.

Winter's Bite
Frigid air ached in his lungs, burning all the way down as Merlin huddled deeper into his coat. It was a frost-cracked, star-struck night. The moon's crescent smirked, low and fat on the horizon, and every breath escaped him in a cloud of steam. A north wind sliced through Camelot, whipping around the street corners. It was as sharp as any blade, and he flinched from it as the braziers guttered and danced.
Anyone with an ounce of common sense would be safe indoors, stoking the fires high and curling up in a nice, warm bed. Gaius had, at least, sounded apologetic when he'd sent him out gathering frostwort: a delicate flower of potent properties that only bloomed on nights such as this.
He had filled Merlin's pockets with roasted chestnuts, now long gone, and promised to stoke the fire high for him. Still, that didn't change the fact that he was numb to the bone, and his poky little room in Gaius tower was a long way from the hearth. It would be warm only in comparison, and he grimly resolved to put on every piece of clothing he owned before he climbed under his blankets.
The cobbles of the courtyard had turned treacherous, each rounded stone capped with ice. He had to pick his way across, and more than once he almost slipped to smash himself on the unforgiving ground. Not that he would feel it, numb as he was. He could see the glow of candles from Arthur's chambers, and a flicker of a frown crossed his brow. He'd handed off his duties to George. Even Arthur couldn't argue that his comfort trumped the medical needs of the populace. Still, he would have expected him to be in bed by now.
His ears ached and his face felt stiff. Even his eyelashes were strangely brittle. He winced and swore his way up the castle steps, gasping gratefully as the stone edifice sheltered him from the clutching fingers of the wretched wind. The soldiers on guard were huddled in the cradle of the arch, and they both shot him sympathetic looks as he stamped his feet and chafed his palms together before giving up and sticking his fingers under his armpits.
'The prince requests your presence in his chambers.'
George at least managed to sound apologetic as he emerged from the shadows, his hand held out to take the bag of herbs from Merlin's possession. 'I'll see that these get to Gaius.'
'Thanks,' Merlin managed, wincing as the word slurred through his lifeless lips. 'Any idea what he wants?'
'I'm afraid not. He has been tended for the night but he seemed – out of sorts.'
Merlin managed a grunt. He didn't much relish the idea of Arthur in a mood. His body wasn't the only thing frozen stiff. His mind felt like an icy river, glassy and motionless. The few thoughts he did have moved achingly slow in his thick skull. More than anything, he wanted to climb into a nest of blankets and stay there until spring. Instead, he bullied himself up the sweeping staircase towards the royal chambers, grumbling as he went.
The castle may be out of the wind, but the masonry was tomb-cold. The torches, candles and braziers were small pools of fleeting warmth in the long corridors. Merlin flitted from one to the next, lingering as long as he dared in their brief respite. It meant by the time he arrived at Arthur's chamber door, he had only been shown a brief flavour of what it was to be warm: enough to set the shivers marching through his so fiercely that every breath stuttered.
His fingers felt sausage-thick around the latch as he shouldered his way inside, shutting the door in his wake and trying not to whine in relief as warm air folded around him like a cocoon. The fire had been stoked high and tended for what must have been hours. Arthur's chambers were not as grand as the King's, but nor were they modest. In the winter they sprouted extra rugs on the flagstones and additional blankets on the bed: all the comforts a prince would require. Merlin was almost sick with envy.
'Took you long enough.' Arthur complained, rising from where he was sat in his fur-draped chair. He wore a long sleep tunic and a pair of plain breeches. His feet were unshod, with only thick socks to protect his toes as he strode towards Merlin. Firm hands grabbed his shoulders, bullying him and shoving him every closer to the hearth before practically man-handling him down onto the rug in front of the roaring blaze.
'I had to get –'
'Frostwort. I know. George was very thorough in informing as to me why you were not attending your duties.'
There was a heavy dose of reproach in Arthur's words, but his heart didn't seem to be in it. If he meant to chastise Merlin for leaving George to deliver the bad news, then he missed his mark. It was enough to make Merlin consider him from beneath his thawing lashes, reading all the little signs he suspected Arthur didn't want him to see.
A couple of years as his man-servant meant that Merlin had swiftly learned to look beneath Arthur's words. His lips often said one thing while his expression said another. His actions often embellished the truth, rather than contradicted it. Now, he saw how that brow was furrowed with more concern than genuine annoyance, and how Arthur was looking him over like he was a horse at market, more than a little bit critical of what he was seeing.
'What?' he managed defensively, stretching out his hands towards the flames as a fresh shiver rumbled through him from head to foot.
'Did you go out in that?' He gestured to Merlin in general, indicating his outfit.
'Yeah,' he replied, dragging out the word. 'They're my clothes?'
Arthur made an angry noise in the back of his throat: a brief pulse of sound before he turned to the table, pouring himself some wine. A moment later, he hunkered down at Merlin's side, gripping his wrist and pressing something into his palm. Merlin blinked stupidly at the metal cup and the rich, red drink steaming softly within its confines.
'Drink it,' Arthur ordered, like a prat. 'It'll warm you up. If I send you off to Gaius' now, you'll wake up with a cold and be no use to anyone.'
Merlin hid his grin behind the rim as he lifted it to his lips, obligingly taking a sip and closing his eyes as the hot drink warmed him from his belly outwards. It was a blessing. He felt like he was slowly coming back to life, and he savoured the rich flavour of spiced wine.
It was not the first time that they had shared a drink in front of the fire. It had happened more and more, these past few months, as Arthur sought to work through the latest challenges of the court. Merlin didn't flatter himself in believing he wished for his advice, though he offered it anyway. Sometimes Arthur even listened.
This was different, though. Arthur didn't seem to be lost in the latest diplomatic entanglement or plotting how to get the best out of a new batch of knights. Instead, he was watching Merlin as he sipped from his own cup, his expression calm but for the hint of worry that clouded his gaze. More than once, he parted his lips as if to say something, but each time he swallowed his words back.
'Thanks,' Merlin managed when the cup was almost empty. His voice sounded rough to his own ears. Now that he was warming up, he felt heavy and lethargic. He loathed the idea of stepping outside of the haven of Arthur's rooms and into the frigid hallways with all his heart. 'I needed that. It was colder out there than I thought.'
'Did you actually think before you went wandering off into the woods in the middle of one of the coldest nights of the year?' Arthur looked at him sharply, his eyebrows raised. 'You didn't even take a cloak. It's not like there aren't plenty going spare.'
'It would have been more trouble than its worth in the woods. They get tangled on things!'
'Gloves, then!' Arthur gestured to his fingers, which had turned bright pink as the heat came back to them. 'You must have some!'
'Not... really?' Merlin pulled a face. Gloves were something that every member of the court had, fine things of leather and nubuck, elegant and lined with fleece. Gaius had a knitted pair with no fingers to help ease the ache the cold brought to his knuckles without limiting his dexterity. They were old and tatty, falling to pieces, and his need was far greater than Merlin's. 'It's all right, Arthur. I'm fine. I'm all warmed up now. See?'
Arthur managed to convey with a mere look how much he disbelieved Merlin's claim. 'You're still shivering.'
Merlin pursed his lips, not quite able to stifle the way his body had stirred itself into a fine, all-over tremble. It was as if it had been reminded of heat and was now lodging its protests that it had been made to suffer.
'Stay there.' Arthur commanded, setting his empty cup aside and getting to his feet. 'You can go when your nose has returned to a normal colour. It's practically glowing.'
He moved with the same steady grace as always as he padded across the room, leaning over his desk and reaching for his quill. Gods alone knew what kind of paperwork he had to be doing at this time of night, but Merlin didn't argue. Instead, he drew his knees up to his chest, draping his forearms over their peaks and propping his chin atop them.
He watched Arthur through drooping lashes, admiring the way the firelight played across his skin and struck sunlight through his hair. The sleep tunic he wore was hardly the sturdiest garment. It clung to his shoulders and hung open at the laces, revealing strong collar bones and the golden hair that gleamed, downy, upon Arthur's chest. It was nothing Merlin hadn't seen before when he helped Arthur with his bath, and yet there was something almost coy about the sight: artless and appealing.
Merlin huffed, shoving those thoughts down as he had numerous times in the past. Arthur may be a prat, but there was no denying that he was easy on the eyes: a classic golden prince – Camelot's pride and joy.
It was all most people ever saw: a valiant knight who would one day be their king, with all the arrogance that went with such expectation. They never witnessed Arthur's uncertainty or regret, nor his well-hidden compassion. Arthur had been trained all his life to see caring as a weakness, yet it had not made him hard or cold. Instead, he showed his care in stealthy, subtle ways, like plying a freezing manservant with warmed wine.
The thought made Merlin smile, warmed more by Arthur's action than the alcohol slipping softly through his veins. He barely noticed his eyes drifting shut, nor the deepening lethargy sweeping over him. At some, dim point, he thought he sensed a hand on his shoulder, something urging him to lie down on the thick rug before the hearth. Someone murmured something, but he hadn't the strength to do more than grumble in response. A weight settled over him, and the smell of clean wool filled his nose.
There was a moment of breathless hesitation before a warm hand rested in his hair, ruffling it with exceptional care. The bit of Merlin that clung onto the waking world by its fingertips knew that it was Arthur. If he so much as twitched, Arthur would flee like a deer bolting from a hunter. Instead, he kept his breathing slow and steady, hovering on the cusp of blissful oblivion as a whisper reached his ears, so achingly tender that he could almost believe it was nothing but a hopeful, desperate dream.
'Goodnight, Merlin.'
***
A week later, there was a large bundle for Merlin sitting on the workbench in the healing rooms. A fine, long coat made of dark-dyed wool, and a pair of hide gloves lined with rabbit fur.
He wasn't sure what warmed him more: the garments designed to keep winter's worst bite at bay, or the subtle, crooked smile that tilted Arthur's lips the first time he saw Merlin wearing them.

HERE'S A THOUGHT~!
In the MCU, the Time Stone was found by the sorcerer Agamotto thousands of years ago.
"The Ancient One is the latest in a long line of Sorcerer Supreme, going back thousands of years to the father of the Mystic Arts, the mighty Agamotto. The same sorcerer who created the Eye you so recklessly borrowed."
—Wong
So this dude, someone who was according to official papers was "a being" who was not human. And from the looks of it found the stone on earth.
Now here is my thought about this, what if this guy found the Time Stone in the Crystal Cave all those years ago. It would make sense for the crystals in the cave to have been affected by the time stone and have the properties of possible futures.
The Birth Place of Magic.
Agamotto might have taken the time stone but some of it's powers still remained there in the cave. Druids and other magic folk revere and fear the cave, cause if not careful one could go mad with all the possible outcomes of the future.
Merlin, long after Camelot, ends up back in the Crystal Cave and witnessing all the possibilities of the future. He learns much but also goes slightly mad for a time.
Then at some point he travels and finds Kamar-Taj. There he can feel the Time Stone but much more powerful then the cave. It calls to him, recognising Merlin as a worthy wielder or fellow kin.
Now I'm completely for the concept of Merlin being Magic itself and if Magic came to be in that cave, Merlin is a part of the time stone as we saw in the first episode of Merlin where he basically stopped time saving Gaius and slowing it down saving Arthur.
If the Infinity Stones were created by the Big Bang from 6 singularities, what if there was a 7th one.
Magic.
Diverse and capable of all 6 aspects of existance.
Making Merlin one of the very few to be capable of touching the stone itself, along with the other five.
What do you think?
#bbc merlin#merlin#merlin emrys#crossover#merlin fandom#the avengers#marvel#time stones#avengers endgame#avengers infinity war#thoughts#Merlin is the God of Magic#Merlin is Immortal#He also is possibly a Celestial#Merlin wants a break#He goes to Kamar-Taj#Time Stone is like “You are my Son/Kin.”#Merlin yeets out of there#Merlin: I already got the destiny talk from a Dragon. Not happening again with a stone. Nope! Going to Fiji!#Time Stone: I can tell you when you're boyfriend returns~#Merlin: ... *grumbles* Shitty stones and bloody lazy prats. Stupid destiny.#Next thing he know he has an apprentice who takes his recklessness to new levels and becomes sorcerer supreme for a few centuries.#They have tea every decade to catch up.

I really don’t want swtor to shut down it’s the only eu thing that’s active we have left
I knew these asks were going to start coming in.
So for those who haven't heard, it was reported, and then later confirmed by Keith Kanneg on the forums, that EA is "selling" SWTOR to another developer, Broadsword. For those who want to read the article discussing it, you can read here: https://www.ign.com/articles/star-wars-the-old-republic-development-third-party-bioware
TL;DR -- It's not shutting down. The servers are going to stay active for a while
There's a few points to note here:
If I understand things correctly, EA actually owns Broadsword. So EA is in fact not actually offloading a property, I think what's actually happening is BioWare Austin itself is being divvied out and would not be surprised to see if that branch is shut down
At least half of the SWTOR dev team is part of this move, so the key things to keep an eye on is which members of the dev team are moving. If the narrative staff is kept intact, then we have more story ahead of us beyond what's been written, and they've confirmed we're getting 7.3, 7.3.1, and 7.4. It's important to note that their production timeline is generally a year out from things being written, so story-wise, if they have narrative staff, we'll likely still have some story drops ahead of us
SWTOR is profitable (it hit over $1 billion in profit several years ago), and I will admit I don't have the best understanding of video game finances, but my impresion it was far into the black and maybe not an enromous cash cow, but a decent consistent revenue stream. EA is a publisher that is about profits, so as long as the game is profitable, even if there's not new story drops, the game will stay online
Disney has seemingly taken a recent interest in SWTOR after mostly ignoring it after its acquisition of Star Wars, even going so far as to finally acknowledge the general KOTOR/SWTOR era in their presentations last year at Celebration. Does this ultimately mean anything? I don't know, but SWTOR is one of the longest running current properties with a stable player base. They're just as interested in profit as EA. Probably another indicator that the game will keep running for a while.
Other properties that Broadsword operates, such as Dark Age of Camelot and Ultima Online, are old games. Ultima Online was released in 1997, and the servers are still active. So like, I think regardless of what happens in regards of the story, we're not losing the ability to log in and play the game
Long term subscriptions - I remember reading, and forgive me, because I've long forgotten the source, that a key indicator if the servers are going offline is to also keep an eye on the six-month subscription option. Basically, if suddenly the only option for subs goes down to one month, that's when to worry about being able to actually play the game.
This is probably not about SWTOR, but BioWare as a whole. It seems there's a leadership issue at the main Alberta office that's causing issues. This is likely an Anthem issue all over again, but Anthem this time happens to be the Mass Effect and Dragon Age properties. Unfortunately, BioWare Austin looks like it's going to suffer the consequences of that, even though they've been running a tight ship overall compared to the rest of the branches. I feel for them. This sucks.
Now I'm not an oracle, I have no idea if this is ultimately a good or bad thing for the game itself. There's a lot of evidence for both sides of the coin, so right now the best thing is to wait and see. We at least have the promise of the next two patches. Let's focus on enjoying that, and celebrating what we love about our silly space game.
If you love the game, keep playing it. Spend money on it, and keep it profitable and it will stay around. Be kind and supportive of the devs, who regardless of how this shakes out, are going through a major transition. But immediately decrying an active game's death and going into doom and gloom is not going to help things.
Will we get more story beyond 7.4? I do not know one way or the other. I hope we do, but it's hard to say for certain on that front. But I do believe we'll still have our toons and be able to replay all of the released content for quite a while to come. Again, for now I'm just going to enjoy my favorite game, and support it as long as I have it. Even if this inevitably means it's going to change.
#i will say#they made a significant investment in regards to the upcoming date night stuff#as its all fully voiced#which involves a LOT of voice actors#so i just don't know guys#i'm just going to focus on loving my game#in all its quirks and quibbles#but will probably be muting or unfollowing anyone being overtly negative about this news#as i just don't have it in me to see a constant stream of negativity about my happy place right now#you do you#we all cope in our own ways#i'm trying to remain cautiously hopeful#forgive me i got about four hours of sleep last night#because insomnia has to insomnia#so i hope this came across well

the librarians "and the eternal question" (s3e8) watch through:
spontaneous human combustion. i fear the creators spend the same ungodly amount of time going down wikipedia rabbit holes as i do.
cassandra is definitely hiding something about this doctor she wants to talk to… i have been informed (ty to @the-tomorrow-road 😊) that this is a cassie episode and im excited but worried because being the focus of the episode on this show usually means something traumatic as hell is about to happen to you
miraculous healing & bursting into flames? i’ve also been told the christian kane "i don’t like vampires" scene (angel reference) is from this ep so i’m guessing the property owners are the vampires? and maybe turning people into vampires?
oh cassandra :((
everyone automatically assuming cassandra’s hopped up on caffeine lol. guessing thats happened before
oh! i didn’t realise she felt that way about jenkins… seems like she’s starting to be incredibly spontaneous in general though. wait, ha, spontaneous like the human combustion lol
cassandra immediately pulling another woman she just met lmaooo. good for her!
yeah there it is! [jacob looks at his hand] "i don’t like vampires". (poor lindsey and his evil hand. oh well!)
i lowkey forgot that baird & flynn were on a trip of their own. thats cute, they get a lil vacation <3
i love the unsubtle glowing magic back door haha. makes me laugh whenever it’s in plain sight of other people. i mean it’s very brief, so people waking by probably don’t notice or think it was just a trick of the light, but it’s pretty funny that they barely try to hide it lol.
oooh if the vampires are telling the truth, then they’re genuinely trying to help people - and it’s been working up until now! very successfully in fact!
doctor-patient confidentiality once again does not exist in tv world haha
JENKINS SWORD FIGHTING VAMPIRES. hes the coolest person ever. i wanna see all his adventures from camelot to present day, that could be a series of its own. probably a sad series in many parts though…
them all waiting for cassandra at the hospital :(. damn this is probably the saddest/most emotional moment they’ve had on this show i think… the fact it’s a very possible, real-life situation adds to that imo. most of us won’t get permanently timetravelled or leave the ghost mirror (though of course those relate to many real life experiences of grief & loss) but waiting for someone to get out of surgery, sitting in the halls of a hospital… thats all too real.
very sweet to hear baird saying how cassandra is valuable to them regardless of her gift & how much they all care about her - but also glad on cassie’s behalf that her gift came back, as she’s come to appreciate it more & more as a gift and part of herself rather than a flaw or curse etc.
w. uh. hang on. what was that. telepathy??
omg YAY cassie finally kissed a woman on screen!!! confirmed bisexual icon!!!

Up Pendragon Creek Without an Oar, my first collab for @bbcmerlin-reversebang has posted!
Summary: When Agravaine betrays the Pendragons, they lose everything- their money, their property, their status, it's all gone. With nothing to their name, they are forced to relocate to the sleepy town of Ealdor, living in the rundown Camelot Bed and Breakfast. It's nothing like any of them were prepared for, but it may just be exactly what Arthur and Morgana need.
Images by me, beautiful words by @laurie-on-a-lark! It's the Schitt's Creek Merthur AU I've been wanting to read for ages, and I hope you love it as much as I do!

I realized that ther is def one concept humans have, that fairies don't quite share. "private property" So I keep imagining Lance newly arrived, just taking things and using them and if they are done, just dropping them where they stand instead of putting them back as well. "Is it stealing if I need it more than them?" "What do you mean someone stole your brush? That's horrible! Oh.. this brush? I borrowed it, bc I needed it? Why did you think it was stolen?"
Lol, oh no. The poor people of Camelot are gonna have a fun time getting used to their new champion. 😂
Lancelot’s the kind of person who, when on a quest, sees a house and just goes in to eat and sleep for the night, Goldilocks style. They’re trying their best.

The Superfriends Meet Frankenstein (Monstrously bad)
[All images owned by DC Comics and Hannah-Barbara. Please don’t sue me]
World’s Greatest Superfriends was pretty much scraping the bottom of the barrel in terms of creativity. The majority of the plots ripped off classic literature and myths (such as Space Arabian Nights, Space Camelot, and Myxlplyx recreating The Wizard of Oz.
However, this review (just in time for Halloween) covers an episode that was ridiculous even by World’s Greatest standards. If you would like to watch it, it’s available on Max or behind your favorite paywall.
We open on a stormy night at a gloomy castle where a mad scientist and his deformed assistant appear to be trying to recreate an infamous experiment.
This is the great, great, grandson of Victor Frankenstein (The writers are using Mel Brooks’s pronunciation of the name)
youtube
(Thanks to Gorash)
Dr. Frankenstein (along with his malformed minion Gork (not Igor? I mean, come on! It’s tradition!)) prepares to give life to a monster he intends on turning loose on Transylvania for killing his ancestor 100 years ago. Talk about a slow burning revenge plot!
The experiment is a success, and the monster comes to life. Dr. Frankenstein orders it to destroy Transylvania!
Meanwhile at the Hall of Justice, it’s a quiet day. Batman and Robin are taking advantage of the calm to tune up the Batplane (shouldn’t they do that in the Batcave and not in the Hall of Justice? Especially since…
…some idiot will want to monkey around with the spare parts)
Why is Gleek rummaging around in the Bat-junk?
To make his own Gleek-plane, of course.
It goes about as well as you’d expect.
[SIDE NOTE: it’s mentioned that the Wonder Twins went with Aquaman to Atlantis, leaving the rest of the Superfriends to Gleek-sit]
The comic relief segment ends as the Trouble Alert blares.
With that, the Batplane speeds to Eastern Europe.
Later, in a village in Transylvania (of course, I think the writers thought the village IS Transylvania), the monster continues its rampage, causing a ton of property damage but not hurting anyone (it IS kids’ TV, after all) as the Dynamic Duo arrive.
The monster isn’t impressed and throws Batman into a nearby bush and Robin into an awning. However, they bounce back and engage the monster, gaining the upper hand for the moment as Dr. Frankenstein looks on.
On Dr. Frankenstein’s orders, the monster retreats to the castle with the Caped Crusaders in hot pursuit. Batman and Robin enter the castle looking for the monster and find a platform covering a sheet. Robin pulls the sheet aside to discover…
Oh, come on! You HAD to know the monster was under there!
Batman pushes the monster into a Jacobs ladder…
…which powers down the monster. The day is saved, right?
Hmm, good point. Sure enough, Dr. Frankenstein shows up, vowing revenge. However, Batman tells Dr. Frankenstein that the Superfriends will stop him.
With that, Gork captures the Dynamic Duo.
(So Dr. Frankenstein just happened to have a giant claw handy?)
Dr. Frankenstein tells Batman he’s planning on using the Superfriends to create his newest monster, starting with Batman!
Dr. Frankenstein’s plan is to transfer Batman’s (and presumably the others’) strength and abilities into the monster.
[OK, hitting pause here. In Superfriends, the only ones with actual powers out of the main cast are Superman and Aquaman. What would Batman and Wonder Woman add? The ability to throw a lasso and use a bunch of monster-themed gadgets? At least the monster could talk to fish if Aquaman was in this episode!]
As Batman’s…bat-ness is undergoing the transfer, Robin is stewing in the dungeon. However…
Let that be a lesson, kids! Always spring the extra few bucks for steel cuffs!
With his ropes chewed off, Robin grabs his utility belt from the nearby table while Gork is sleeping (wait, wasn’t he just upstairs with Dr. Frankenstein?)
Robin rushes off to alert the rest of the Superfriends. Gork then suddenly rushes off to inform Dr. Frankenstein of Robin’s escape.
…all according to plan!
Meanwhile at the Hall of Justice…
Superman and Wonder Woman spring into action and head for Transylvania.
Unfortunately, so does the comic relief.
As the rest of the Superfriends arrive, Superman hears screams from the village, so he and Wonder Woman rush to help
(leaving Batman to rot in Castle Frankenstein, I guess)
youtube
(Thanks to Slime Golem's Slimepedia)
Looks like the Superfriends fell right into Dr. Frankenstein’s trap! The tar monster drags Superman and Wonder Woman to the castle and prepped for the procedure.
With that hollow threat, the Superfriends are raised for the transfer, producing…
…yeeeeeaaaah
Dr. Frankenstein then sends his new monster to conquer Europe! The monster leaves the castle, passing a hidden Robin along the way. As Robin tries to figure out what sort of deus ex Supershit he can pull out of his ass to Save The Day…
…the Comic Relief crashes into a nearby bog, then finds Robin. Robin has at least the beginnings of a plan, using Gleek to distract Gork long enough to…
Wow! For once Gleek did something useful! Robin frees the others and prepares to stop the monster, but…
The Superfriends limp to an energy research station and explain the situation to the scientists. They have a machine that can transfer the Superfriends’ remaining energy to Robin, but it’s untested on humans (or Kryptonians)
The scientists perform the procedure and we now have an 10 foot tall Super-Robin.
The scientists explain that the Superfriends could die in an hour if the energy isn’t returned (so no pressure or anything) With that, Robin flies off.
Meanwhile, the monster has grabbed a monorail and throws it into the distance when…
One would think catching it like that would make it split in half. Robin gently returns it to the ground (oblivious to any injuries to passengers and crew caused by the sudden stop when he caught it)
Dr. Frankenstein isn’t pleased upon realizing that his monster isn’t the only one with Superman’s abilities, ordering his monster to kill Robin.
The pair square off, but…
Robin then flies off, returning moments later with…
This weakens the monster (Robin is wearing a lead-lined suit) and flies him away.
Meanwhile, the Superfriends have staggered their way to Frankenstein’s castle (in their weakened state, it likely would’ve taken them a hell of a lot longer than an hour!)
The trio somehow overpower Dr. Frankenstein…
…while Gleek deals with Gork (Gleek useful twice in an episode? Are the writers feeling all right? I mean, even Batman looks shocked!)
Robin sets the controls as the others strap themselves on the tables, then straps the monster and himself in as the process is reversed and everyone is back to normal.
All that’s left is the wrap-up at the Hall of Justice, where Robin kinda misses being able to fly.
Speaking of flying…whatever happened to the comic relief and the Gleek-plane?
Don’t worry. He’ll find his way home by the next episode.
…maybe.

Merlin: He's only in his late teens through early 20s for most of the series, but by the end of the series, after all his friends and allies in Camelot have died, he's wandered for about 1500 years waiting for Arthur's return

Sometimes, I think about the huge number of DC properties that will never see media adaptations beyond the Easter eggy variety (like the DC SHOWCASE animated shorts or guest appearances on something like BATMAN: THE BRAVE AND THE BOLD) due to corporate dysfunction — not the big-name superhero stuff, but things like:
KAMANDI, which could make a magnificent animated series.
ATOMIC KNIGHTS, which is less stupid than FALLOUT and has giant mutant Dalmatians the characters ride as steeds.
SILVERBLADE, a charming mid-80s "Maxi-Series" by Cary Bates and Gene Colan about a retired movie star who gains the supernatural power to transform himself into any character he's ever played.
STANLEY AND HIS MONSTER, a delightful kids' comic about a boy who adopts a huge red shaggy monster that his parents (who never actually see the monster) patiently assume is his imaginary friend.
CAMELOT 3000, a sci-fi spin on the Knights of the Round Table with King Arthur reincarnated in a high-tech 31st century world and transgender Sir Tristan.
Then I remind myself that at best, they'd just be reduced to the same hackish nerd show pablum as the various Arrowverse shows (probably by the same hacks), and that, as with STAR WARS and STAR TREK, an abundance of crap can very easily make something too infuriating to even bother hate-watching. So, maybe it's for the best.
#i still wish they'd properly reprint more of this stuff though#comics#hateration#holleration#teevee#kamandi#atomic knights#silverblade#stanley and his monster#camelot 3000#i though the showcase presents kamandi short was okay BUT#it makes the mistake of focusing on the “Mighty One” issue#which wrongly suggests that the whole storyline was#somehow a superman tie-in#which is not the point of that story#the brave and the bold kamandi episode with grodd is pretty great though#to be clear atomic knights is still pretty stupid#it's just LESS stupid than fallout#fallout

SaTBK PROMPT WEEK || DRAGON || DAY 8
[Prompt List] | [Day 1] | [Day 2] | [Day 3] | [Day 4] | [Day 5] | [Day 6] | [Day 7]
@satbkpromptweek @sonicstorybook
my entire body has unionized against me and sold me out to both OSHA and the IRS, but yknow what? I got a whole series of really cool art I am very proud of. So who’s the real winner here. That’s right. It’s ME.
Wanted to end everything off with a bang and I can NOT pass up the opportunity to draw a really cool dragon, so here’s the final boss fight of my (at least first) SaTBK au storyline. Against the Metal Overlord himself. One day I think I do want to do some in-between lore illustrations and finish out the visual story I was going for during this prompt week, but... thats a thing for future X to decide. Present X simply wishes to bask in these pretty pictures.
Lore below the cut so it can be seperate from the artist commentary
During Arthur’s party’s search for Atlas and a way to harness it’s powers to see if it could cure those corrupted by what’s known as the Phantom Ruby, Infinite had personally taken it upon himself to help the cursed Robotnik soldiers regain their old selves, horrified that their leader would not only kill his most loyal men, but rip them of everything that made them.. well. Them. While he fell mostly on deaf ears, he seemed to have the most reach with Prince Ferris.
Over the course of two groups’ bonds, Ferris grew increasingly angry with his father and, with the Jackal’s help, plotted revenge.
After finding Atlas, King Arthur and his adventuring crew make haste back towards Camelot, all the while allowing Francesca to test the sword’s properties on a recently captured Robotnik soldier, Termina the Goat (not pictured but one day I’ll have to draw her). Fortunately, Francesca’s studies have varying degrees of success in clearing the Robotnik Curse out of those it’s afflicted for a time.
Unfortunately, however, the adventuring party seemed to be late to save Camelot and the Robotnik Empire from harm. Finding the Camelot knights fighting a seemingly futile battle against the newly transformed, draconic body of Ferris.
Unwilling to let the Dracolich claim the lives of more of his men, Arthur rides into battle armed with Atlas. Francesca urges Exxie to follow, giving her as much of the elixir to ward off the Robotnik curse as she can muster. While Infinite was more than happy to sit back and let his new companion snuff out the lives of any knight dared cross the prince, the bandit interferes with his own attack on the kingdoms to try and keep the remains of the Jackal squad safe from the havok he’s helped to create.
And thus the climactic battle against the wrathful prince begins.
fades into the distance and leaves yall on a cliffhanger lmao
