3.5h hours of studying math

Spent 2.5 hours finishing my notes on storastic theory - managed to not only understand three topics we haven’t covered yet but also come up with a question for my teacher! I’ll ask her about it on Monday (if I don’t forget…). For hour 3 I had to decide between linear algebra and calculus. I chose the latter and regret it because I understand *nothing*. To be fair, it’s been 1.5 years since my last calculus class…

Did the ENTIRE FIRST PART OF THE PROBLEM the hard way by just substituting outright and compounding the chain and product rule. I got the actual numeric answer right only for it to go back and ask me to format it differently?

I got it right once I used their method WHICH GIVES YOU THE SAME ANSWER but isn't practical at all since I had to substitute the parametric functions in anyway? I should just write these questions at this point bro I'm actually going crazy.

I posted a while back about my decision to attempt a CS degree and my fears about the math classes and learning new languages. Well...

I passed all the math classes! Calc 2 was very hard and I shed a lot of tears, mainly because of the professor and the way the class was designed. I still made it out with an A. I also took an elective languages survey course and did very well there, too.

now the big hurdles are the self-directed courses like software engineering. I really struggle with limiting the scope of my projects when left to my own devices.

There is also an operating systems course I already had to drop once--the most dropped and failed course in the program according to my advisor. But this time I will be brave and try to see it through even if I can't get a perfect grade. Wish me luck! and uh, if you know of any good resources for learning to write command prompt scripts, please share. I watched MIT's missing semester lecture series but i guess it wasn't enough.

Exam season is upon us

Made it through 50% of the first mock exam without any problems but can’t seem to solve the other 50%…I’ll leave it for now and get started on the calculus II/algebra II mock exam- I am fearing the worst. - Exam schedule has been published, so far so good. Barely have any classes this week, which I’m grateful for; not feeling too well atm.

sometimes i ask my math professors why we're doing a certain thing and i dont know how to explain that i dont mean "this has no real world applications>:(" i mean what are the math applications?

it was such an exciting moment for me when i realized that since combinations/permutations are ways to find how things can be arranged, and probability is just the ways we can get something we're interested in over all the ways we could get something(want/all), combinations and permutations give us ways to find more complicated probabilities without being able to individually list all possible combinations by hand. so the "why are we doing this" for combinations/permutations is "so we can take more complicated probabilities later on". (It's also the basis for the binomial distribution!!)

without being able to understand the direction we're going with an idea it feels like a random exercise instead of the doorway to understanding more complex mathematical ideas and it also makes me feel like i don't understand how all the pieces of the class fit together.
