So I haven’t really been seeing folks talk much here at all about what’s been going on with Hurricane Helene recovery- but I thought I might share something I thought was cool and important.
Because of how roads have been washed out making homes and towns inaccessible to vehicles, the Cajun Navy (organizations that performs search, rescue, and assistance during disasters) has partnered with Mountain Mule Packer Ranch to use the mules to get medications, food, and water to people in need.
I just think it’s incredible. Despite all the technology you’d think is accessible to help people out, mules are still the most reliable form of transport to save people’s lives

Hey everyone, fun fact, government workers can and will lose their jobs AND be prosecuted if they divert resources from what they are allocated for to another purpose! For example, funds and donations that are specifically for flood relief, or for specific disaster events.
You know who DOESN'T have any formal accountability? Private groups of random people...

Nona's Rage: Hurricanes, Celebrities, and the Illusion of a Bullet Train - HWSR Ep 94
In this lively episode of the He's Wrong She's Right podcast, ‘Nona's Rage, Hurricanes, Celebrities, and the Illusion of a Bullet Train - HWSR Ep 94’, hosts Andrew Lemacks and Nona Phelps cover an extensive range of topics, sometimes with comedic flair. They dive into the impact of hurricanes on the US, the peculiar rise and fall of celebrity reputations, and a surprising story of confusion between beverages. Nona vents her frustrations about government responses to domestic crises, exploring the irony of budget allocations. The duo also discusses the misleading excitement over Amtrak's new 'Bullet Train' service, only to reveal its non-bullet-speed reality. Packed with amusing and heated exchanges, this episode is a rollercoaster of current events and cultural commentary.

After no wifi and no grocery stores and no gas for 5(6?) days in the outskirts of Asheville, I keep thinking about "bread and entertainment" the same way we were all thinking about tigers in cages during covid
#I don't know that I can describe it but there's a certain amount of boredom where a psychological switch flipped#it's like my tolerance for certain things is just gone#I think between that and how self-reliant communities can be out here#we just went from election season to a community of neighbors overnight. overnight.#and people here are good at it!#preppers and communist hippies aren't a bad combination in a disaster scenario lol#I think watching Appalachians meet the United Cajun Navy is something that will follow me for the rest of my life.

Mountain mule packer ranch has been working to bring much needed supplies and medicine to people who’ve been cut off by washed out roads. The Cajun navy has been there volunteering with their vehicles and with some civilians bringing their own helicopters to assist with rescued and supply drops. Shit is bad but it’s nice to know that while the roads get cleared we can rely on our neighbors to help.
appalachia is devastated. towns i loved, towns i visited all the time, are gone. not damaged, GONE. they are leveled to the ground. there is nothing left but rubble and ruin. people are dead. appalachia is poor to begin with and relies on tourism for a lot of its income, and multiple of those tourist locations are just...gone.
my town is okay, but it's flooded and wrecked. trees are blocking all but one way out of our neighborhood. power lines are hanging limp in the roads. we've been without power for over 24 hours and will continue to be without power for likely another 24+. disabled people and poor people are GOING to die from this. gods save appalachia.
#Helene tore through my old home in Tampa and damn near my new one here in nc#the pack mules and the Cajun navy are one of the few things keeping me going

Imagine you live in a tiny coast town in idk fucking Georgia or something. Everything is fine and dandy but one day King Charles and the Pope publicly declare war on your town because the pope told him your mayor kidnapped Prince William. Then, you remember that one guy Will who showed up like four months ago and is pretty quiet and keeps to himself and doesn't do much besides sit in the fields all day. Everyone starts searching for him to get King Charles off your backs only to realize he has completely disappeared.
This also does absolutely nothing to explain why the Pope is backing King Charles, UNTIL you remember your Mayor's DA is actually the Pope's BROTHER who ran away because he didn't want to marry some random royal person he didn't know. Little do you know, that the rando royal is actually Prince William, who has been kidnapped for real this time- by the pope- but is being held in an underground bunker in the okefenokee swamp.
Anyways, you're trying to figure how the fuck your town of maybe 300-ish people is going to fight the british navy and fucking spanish inquisition. The mayor, handling this remarkably well, makes two phone calls. The first to the Mayor of Washington DC, who is lending you the national guard since your mayor saved him while he was being held captive by an anarchist terrorist group one time. The second is the governor of Louisiana, who agrees to lend some humanitarian aid because your mayor walked his daughter home after she got lost on a chicken farm once. Then, the pope decides to pillage and raze the fuck out of Louisiana, partly because they were offering to lend aid, but mostly because the pope knows the governor's son is your mayor's side piece.
Now, your tiny town is full of the national guard and 20,000 cajuns that are simply itching to terrorize some monarchists. Also that bishop that you were pretty sure was just spying on your town comes in and denounces the pope and offers to fight for your mayor. Lastly, your mayor meets King Charles and the Pope at the town limits, and the mayor, ever wanting peace, offers to marry the pope, who takes a confusingly long time to say no.
Then the battle happens and your army of the national guard and 20,000 cajuns absolutely rock their shit before things start to turn for the worse and just when all seems lost Prince William shows up and absolutely decks King Charles in the face, throwing such a legendary haymaker hard enough to be heard throughout the whole battle, ending the fighting instantly.
The Battle of Phoenix Drop was fucking wild.

Rainbow Cereal and Morning Confessions - Cyclone x Reader
Word Count: 1.4k
Summary: Over breakfast, you mention something that you noticed during the previous night, only for Beau to confess something that's been weighing heavily on his mind.
Warnings: Domestic fluff, angst, hurt/comfort, mentions of kids/pregnancy, Beau had a bad childhood and is bad with emotions but he's secretly a hopeless romantic.
Authors Note: This was originally a very different fic written with my OC in mind, but I loved this idea so much I couldn't help but rewrite it to post here! Based on some headcanons I posted in January.
Read on AO3
“You talk in your sleep.” You say between mouthfuls of colorful fruity cereal.
He eyes you sharply over his newspaper and takes a long swig off steaming black coffee.
“No, I don’t.” He answers dryly.
You twirl your spoon and give him a toothy grin. “Yeah, you do.”
He sends you an eye roll before pushing his plate away and returning to his daily reading.
Several minutes pass by without another word, but the silence between you is anything but awkward—It somehow never is.
“What exactly do I talk about?” He asks in a low voice, and it takes all you have not to jump up and kiss him then and there.
“National secrets, mostly.” You deadpan before quickly shoveling another spoonful of cereal into your mouth in a poorly planned attempt to stop your laughter.
His eyebrows fly up so fast that you nearly choke. He leans across the table, using thick fingers to wipe away a stray drop of milk that escaped your mouth before leaning back into his previous position and waiting on you to regain your composure.
“For real though, It was mostly gibberish with the occasional mention of pancakes.” You say nodding towards his plate.
He sends you an annoyingly soft smile as a bit of color returns to his face.
Your mind runs over his sleeping mumbles of the previous night, and you make a connection between his somniloquy and the handwritten notes you’d seen on his desk.
“You never told me you speak French.”
His handsome features shift into a look you’ve never seen before, and you feel his eyes scrutinize yours as if he’s deeply considering something.
“Cajun French. It’s what my parents spoke.”
You nod softly, feeling suddenly awkward as you pick up on the unusual tone laced through his deep voice.
In the years between your first meeting and now, you have asked countless people—all of various rank and branch, along with a few civilians—about him. Your inquiries had always turned up the same. Nothing. No wife, no kids, and no known background prior to joining the Navy. He didn’t even have any social media to stalk. Aside from these intimate moments only you share with him, he’s a complete mystery. Practically a ghost.
“Were you and your parents close?” You ask softly.
“No.” He says. The finality feels sharp, but his tone falls flat. His voice feels nearly foreign to your ears.
His eyes fall to yours again, only this time they’re a confusing mix of vulnerable and guarded. You know instantly that something happened—something bad—and you choose not to push the topic any further.
You look down at your bowl, stirring the now soggy cereal around the colorful milk. He always chastises you for eating it, but it’s no different than how you nag at him for surviving off of coffee and pent up anger—a simmering rage so intertwined with him that you’ve often wondered where it stems from. Still seated in front of you, he’s staring off into space. You’re too afraid to ask yourself that question now.
“Do you want kids?” He asks suddenly. “With me, I mean.”
You nearly let out a playful—who else do you think I’d let knock me up?—but he still has that far-away look on his face, so you pause. Swallowing air as you gather your thoughts.
“I… don’t think I’ve ever really thought about it.” You answer honestly, and he nods.
“I hadn’t thought about it either. Not until you.” He confesses.
“Having you in my life will always be the most important thing, but I realized that I’d probably like to be a dad.” He says. “And after I realized that, I also realized that I didn’t have anything from my own childhood to pass on to them.”
You nod, rendered breathless by the conversation. God, he’d be a good dad.
“Both my parents were Cajun. I remember that my mother was devoutly Catholic, and she raised me to speak French in a time when that just wasn’t what you did.” He pauses, only to resume after taking a deep breath. “I know now that they were complicated people. I choose not to think about them anymore.” He says in a voice so soft you nearly wonder if your mind made it up.
You nod along, giving him space to speak whatever is on his mind. You don’t let yourself question, aloud or otherwise, why he doesn’t speak of his father.
“That was a long time ago—and a lot of the language is lost on me now—but I wanted something…positive…to pass on if I ever had a kid.” He confesses.
You give him a soft smile before taking his hand across the table.
“You’ve clearly thought a lot about this, and while I haven’t yet, I will.” You say.
The conversation has taken such an intense turn that you felt shaky as you rose from your seat to clean up the breakfast dishes.
You fall into a lull of comfortable normalcy, though the bits of his history he revealed hang heavy in your mind as you load the dishwasher.
“Is there anything in particular you want to pass on? Anything I should learn…just in case?” You ask gently as you wipe your hands dry. It was a simple, genuine question, though by the gentle but shocked look on his face, you might as well have gotten on one knee and asked for his hand in marriage.
“I’ll think about it,” he says with the slightest teasing tone.
You smile, happy to know nothing is weighing too heavy on him, and things are back to business as usual once again.
“There’s a lot I want to tell you and more that I should, but..”
“Hey,” you say calmly “there’s no pressure. If you want to wax poetic about your entire life story or you never want to speak about it again, it’s fine. Childhoods are weird, and what matters is who you become after it all.”
He settles back into the chair, staring at you with nothing my pure adoration. Still, something has his shoulders tense, and something tells you that it’s the same thing that has words lying on the tip of your tongue.
“You’re a good man, Beau. And you’d make an amazing father.”
He rises to his seat, folds his newspaper—left over right, top over bottom, always—and drops it on the table. Cherry oak. Pretty, solid wood.
He crosses the short distance between you and kisses your head like the good man and partner he is. Without another word, he drops back into his seat and assumes his previous position, though the tension he always holds in his shoulders gives way just a bit. Sunlight has barely begun to stream in through the large kitchen windows, casting the table you are both seated at in a fresh, golden glow. A comfortable silence stretches between you as you finish the last few bites of your breakfast. He’s leaning back in his chair, legs crossed, though his left hand lays casually against the table. As the minutes pass, your hand absentmindedly brushes against his. He glances up at you over his paper, his eyes filled with warmth as a hint of a smile plays on his lips.
“I know you hate getting up this early, but I like being able to spend my mornings with you,” he says as he encircles your hand with his own, brushing the pads of his fingertips over your knuckles. You look up at him, your swelling as his words sink in. Aside from the daily ‘I love you’ s, Beau isn’t someone who ever verbalizes his emotions. Though he has never once held back from showing you just how much he cares.
“Me too,” you reply. Your hand squeezes his gently, a small gesture that confirms you recognize the gravity of his admission.
The smell of his black coffee lingers in the air as you hear the world outside begin to wake up. You sit happily in each other's presence for several moments longer. The world outside the window feels far away and almost meaningless compared to the cozy safe haven of his kitchen.
Suddenly, you feel his shift and reluctantly pull his hand from yours. You glance briefly at the clock, laughing as the numbers confirm that he has only minutes before he needs to leave for work. He rinses his mug and sets it on a tea towel, leaving it to dry. He swipes his bag off the counter and leans in for a full, proper kiss this time. You smile up at him as he pulls away, knowing that no matter what his day ahead holds, the moments you shared together over breakfast will tide him over until he can come back home to you.

PSA: An Appalachian cry for help
Rather unusually, I have received this poignant message yesterday, in the middle of the European night, and I am now honoring it, with @novel-dreams' permission to share part of our DM convo:
@novel-dreams also provided this dramatic on-the-spot feedback:
[Click here for a more complete reblog, photos included: https://www.tumblr.com/the-elder-polls/762929863960166400/to-those-of-you-reblogging-this-thank-you-i-have?source=share]
And S himself shared the American Red Cross' appeal on behalf of the victims of hurricane Helene in North Carolina and Tennessee:
So, if you want to help and I strongly suggest you do so, even symbolically, as even dimes can make a difference to those left with absolutely nothing, here are a couple of other links for vetted local NGOs:
Most of these, such as Operation Airdrop or Manna Food Bank, may not take overseas donations and this makes me feel somewhat helpless, but all I am asking you, really, is at least to help spread this message, if you are unable/unwilling to pitch in.
In the meanwhile, we are ploughing through our own dressings, Shipper Mom and I, because we also had devastating floods in my own country and there are thousands who lost absolutely everything.
Let this be a reminder climate change is no joke.
[Later edit]: @txgenelady added this extra resource:
And I am adding The American Red Cross' dedicated link: https://www.redcross.org/donate/dr/hurricane-helene.html/
This post will remain open and might be regularly updated if you have any other idea or resource.
[Later edit 2]: Adding in the link for the North Carolina Disaster Relief Fund (thank you, @poughkeepsielass!): https://pay.payitgov.com/ncdonations (I have donated a very small amount here, from the 💖, the RC won't take my money), along with World Central Kitchen (thank you, @sarcastic-poll!): https://donate.wck.org/give/622465/?_gl=1qcys45_gcl_auMTQzNDU4MTEwMi4xNzI3ODA1MTkz_gaMTEwMjkzMjY4Ni4xNzI3ODA1MTkz_ga_5WKVY8503C*MTcyNzgwNTE5My4xLjEuMTcyNzgwNTIxNy4zNi4wLjA.#!/donation/checkout
[Later edit 3]: added The Cajun Navy Relief (https://www.cajunnavyrelief.com/)

You over there are arrogant. You call refugees illegal immigrants but you or your family are come from immigrants.
You can not even help people after hurricane. Your country is a failure.
Ah, the word you're looking for is proud, not arrogant. Now what part of my family are you talking about? Some of my family could have charged Columbus a landing fee. Some came over when Virginia and Pennsylvania were Brit colonies. Any other members of my family tree that immigrated sat their butts on Ellis Island until they could LEGALLY enter this nation.
I personally do not call the wave of border crossers "Illegal immigrants" that term implies a sense of permanency. I call them "Illegal aliens". So very few of these IAs can qualify as true refugees. Save your sanctimoniousness for someone else.
The Biden-Harris administration has failed to help the hurricane victims due in no small part to the money FEMA (DHS) has spent on the previously mentioned fake refugees. However American is more than one failed presidential administration. America is comprised of Americans. Right now individuals, citizens, are busting their collective butts to get supplies and aid to those in need. They are using mule teams, and private vehicles. Private pilots are using personal aircraft to fly supplies and aid into areas not reachable by ground. I read today that the "Cajun Navy" is using drones to help deliver needed items. These efforts are not moving supplies as quickly as a cohesive, full court press by a competent governmental response, but they are helping.
To judge our nation on the basis of one truly failed administration would be a tragic mistake.

I know there are already posts going around about this, but someone I know that was devastatingly impacted by the situation in Asheville has shared some of the groups already on the ground that have routes for resources in and out of the area.
So if anyone is looking for a place to donate to, consider these local ones, where your money or donation will have an almost immediate impact.
Beloved Asheville (has no paid staff, all donations go 100% to their efforts)
Mountain Mule Packer Ranch - are using mule chains to transport supplies into areas still inaccessible except by foot
Operation Airdrop - has three addresses you can send things to if you'd rather send supplies on their list of things they're in dire need of instead of money
Cajun Navy - this link goes to their Amazon wishlist of items for Helene victims

The entire town of Rolling Fork, MS has been wiped out. At least 23 dead, 4 missing. 110,000 people are without power.
How to help:
Do not self-deploy, you could slow down the process. Donate money/resources to the following organizations instead.
Organizations
Rolling Fork Civic Center (Accepting donations of essentials like water and food at 19719 Hwy 61 South, Rolling Fork, MS 39159)
Convoy of Hope (Accepting monetary donations)
American Red Cross (Accepting monetary donations) (Edit: link is not wanting to work on tumblr, just go to the American Red Cross website and find the AL-MS section)
(Note as of April 6, 2022: I’ve heard in the tags that the American Red Cross may be controversial, so do your research to make an informed decision if you plan on donating to this charity).
Volunteer Mississippi (Accepting monetary donations; they will also update the volunteer page as needs arise)
United Cajun Navy (Accepting monetary donations, also in need of more trucks and trailers)
MS Department of Public Safety (Accepting donations of bottled water, canned goods, and paper products in Jackson, MS.)
