Arms wind their way around James's waist, hoping to provide him with some comfort as he stands at the window, lost in his thoughts. Thoughts that seem to plague him. Though, his touch seems to help bring James back to him, back to this moment. Back to now. "You have nothing to apologize for." Thomas reassures him, squeezing him gently in his arms while placing a soft kiss upon his shoulder, lips lingering for a moment. "It can be hard letting go." Especially when something was such an important part of one's life, for such a long time. Silence fills the room for some seconds, a few minutes even, before Thomas speaks again, still holding him. "Do you want to tell me what it is you were thinking about?" There were some things James had already shared with Thomas regarding his life of piracy, but still so much Thomas didn't know. Things he wanted to know, but only if James wanted to share them. No matter what they sure, Thomas always assured James that he could confide in him, that he could tell him anything.

Hi!
I was just cleared by my professor to write a 35 page paper concerning the relationship between Hamilton and Laurens.
I've been following your blog for a while now and truly appreciate the nuance you approach 18th century relationships with homoerotic subtext. I was wondering if there are any sources or articles that you could think of that could possibly help? I'm trying to be as thorough as possible with this project and figured that the good people of tumblr would be a great place to start!
That's so exciting!
I've already shared a bunch of general/context-setting works here, some of which include mentions of the Laurens-Hamilton relationship. You especially want the Godbeer text.
Here are a few other articles that might be worth looking at:
Weir, R. M. (1976). Portrait Of A Hero. American Heritage, 27(3).
Lyons, C. A. (2003). Mapping an Atlantic Sexual Culture: Homoeroticism in Eighteenth-Century Philadelphia. William and Mary Quarterly, 60(1), 119.
Haggerty, G. E. (2012). Gray Agonistes: Thomas Gray and Masculine Friendship. The Age of Johnson, 22, 331–XIII.
Richter, S. (1996). The Ins and Outs of Intimacy: Gender, Epistolary Culture, and the Public Sphere. The German Quarterly, 69(2), 111–124.
And then a few considerations from me (because I've never seen a soapbox I didn't want to climb on):
Context is everything. If you're looking to evaluate the relationship effectively, make sure you are consulting sources that cover the right social, cultural and temporal contexts (in this case, Anglo-American late 18th century). Male-male relationships underwent a lot of change during the 18th century, as did the socially-acceptable (or not) codes and expressions. They also varied a lot by culture, so a source about men in France in the 1720s is only going to be tangentially relevant here.
Be sure to consider adjacent topics like masculinity, virtue, family life, and the influence of antiquity. All of these helped to model what a man should aspire to be, and how he should engage with the other people in his life (and thereby, what would count as transgession).
Don't forget friendship! Whatever else Laurens and Hamilton were, or however else we want to label it, they were also close friends. This sometimes gets erased or overlooked and it's very frustrating. Friendships were the cornerstone relationships of young men's lives at the time - sites of companionship, values-building, intellectual stimulation and social support.
Good luck with your paper!

Tragedy struck Midlothian on September 5th 1889 when Sixty-three miners, some as young as thirteen, died in an underground fire at Mauricewood Pit, at Penicuik, Midlothian.
This was the worst mining disaster in the history of the Lothians and the cause was never discovered, or at least disclosed.
The following is extracted from “The Mauricewood Braves” one of Wilsons ‘Mining Lays, Tales and Folk-lore’ published 1916.
“The Mauricewood Pit, at Penicuik, near Edinburgh, took fire on September 5th, 1889, and sixty eight men and boys lost their lives. The principal product from the pit was ironstone, although coal in small quantities was also produced. The pit had a vertical shaft of 480 feet then a level roadway eastwards of 180 feet and this was followed by a one in eight dip decline of 960 feet (Deaths Incline). Halfway down the decline a steam engine had been erected and another steam engine did duty at the bottom. The steam pipes traversed this route, and it was at the 800 ft slant that the fire broke out among the support timbers. The wood was tinder and inflammable, and it was soon apparent that the conflagration would spread and become disastrous. There were no other outlets to or from the lower level, and unless the men below received a warning note to give them a chance of escape, they must inevitably perish. Three trapper and pony boys – Robert Hook Tolmie (my own surname but no relation) , aged 14; Michael Hamilton, aged 15; and Thomas Foster, aged 17 years, volunteered to go round the mine and warn all the men below of their danger, but the only shiftman there, his mate was away in another district of the pit- pleaded with the boys not to go away and said that he would go himself to warn the other men of the fires danger, but the boys in unison shouted as they ran “No, we’ll go” ….. And they went. The brave boys never came back alive. “They died to save” The bodies of the boys were afterwards recovered (surrounded by over twenty other bodies) near a trapdoor that had got blocked up in the meantime cutting off the avenue of escape. The mine was subsequently flooded to quench the fire that was raging in the workings, and over a year elapsed before the last body was brought to the surface.
The heroism and self-sacrifice of the three lads aroused sympathetic expressions and admiration throughout the mining world, and a monument marks their last resting place in the Penicuik’s KirkHill Cemetery.
Names of Dead
The alphabetical list of names below is from a report in the Scotsman. Among the names is a Robert Tolmie, I wonder if he was some sort of relation to my family, although I did know of some Penicuik Tolmie’s who were not related to us.

Continued from here. @fornassau
It wouldn't be the first time the heat and exhaustion made Thomas see things that weren't truly there. Nor was it the first time he'd seen James either. Thus why he stood there in silence for the first several minutes that James was approaching him because he wasn't sure this was real, that he was real. Too many times he'd been fooled by his own mind, by his own heart, when he reached out for the person he desired most in this world only for it be another plantation worker or owner. Or for it to be nothing. Just the air and dust in front of him. Sometimes he'd even see Miranda, sometimes both, but each and every time it was just a cruel trick that left Thomas feeling broken all over again.
They'd also come to him in his dreams at night, too. He'd often dream of being back home with James, curled up in his arms, and he'd then wake up thinking that's exactly where they were, or perhaps in their own home somewhere away from everything and everyone, only for reality to settle in. He tried his hardest not to dream because he couldn't handle that disappointment and pain any longer, though at the same time, it kept him going. He kept him going, along with the hope that perhaps someday, somehow, he'd truly see him again. But as the days went by, as the years went by, it became harder to remain hopeful. There was no end in sight to this imprisonment... though he was at least thankful for their kindness. Would they one day allow him to leave? God, Thomas hoped so... even if he didn't know where he would go. He was alone. Completely and utterly alone.
Until now. Or so he hoped because every time his mind played this cruel trick, Thomas so badly wanted it to be real. Wanted him to be real and the last time that happened, he fell into James' arms, only to actually fall onto the hot ground, bawling into the dirt until he fell unconscious. He couldn't let that happen again... he wouldn't. But this time... this time was different. Because he was being escorted by two others, and they were being watched by several, so Thomas was not the only one seeing this... seeing him.
He came closer and closer, while Thomas stayed put, afraid to move, and it's only when James speaks, clear as day, that Thomas breaks. He bursts into tears and finally succumbs to the overwhelming need to touch him, to embrace him and be embraced by him in return, hoping and praying that it was real this time. That he was real. That after so many goddamn years of hoping and believing and losing hope and breaking that somehow this time was real. And it was. Oh, god, it was real.
He was real.
Because the illusions never hugged him in return. He never felt James' arms around him like this, he never felt his warm body pressed against his like all those years ago, and not even his dreams felt like this. Real. He could really and truly feel him, he could smell him, he could hear him, and all of that had Thomas bawling in this moment, his arms wrapped tightly around him, grasping him tightly with his hands, terrified to let him go. "James..." He breathes out, voice dry and hoarse. "James.." He says again, eyes shut tight as the tears fall from his eyes, but then he feels him pull away and he lets out a shaky breath, crying out a broken "no", his hands trying to hold on as though he's about to disappear, as though this is nothing but the cruelest trick yet.
But even with the distance between them now, he's still there. He's still standing before him now looking wrecked with guilt. He speaks again, saying his name and his heart dances, oh does it dance. But then he's apologizing and Thomas shakes his head. He has his suspicions as to what he could possibly be apologizing for, so many things, but he doesn't need it. He just... oh, god, he just needs him. So, he reaches out and cups James' face, gazing into his eyes for a good few seconds before he pulls him in for a kiss. One that conveys his relief and joy and to see him again, one that is meant to reassure the other man that he does not need to apologize, not in this moment, and one that begs him to touch him in return again, to take him back into his arms like he so desperately needs. "Please, James... please.." He cries, not caring about anything else in this moment, just him. Just them.

Im really tempted to animate the entirety of the Hamilton musical with the cast of ninjago and nexo lmao
As in like, instead of the real actors of the play, the actors are replaced with the charaters playing out the charaters lmao
so like what I have in my vision is :
Kai - Alexander H.
Skylar - Eliza H.
Nya - [she didn't get a choice] Angelica S.
Cole - Hercules M., James M.
Jay - [many charaters, mainly:] King G. Samuel C.(?), Charles L.
Lloyd - John L. [to appease the gf ships LMAO], Phillip H.
Clay - George W. [self explanatory]
Lance - [I can't spell french mans name °^]°(lance just puts on a lil moo-stache), Thomas J.
Macy - Peggy S., Mariah(?) R.
Aaron - Aaron B. [very self explanatory]
:D. I have so many funny scenes in my mind, but animating an almost 3 hour musical will be insanely long to make.

TAKING A PHOTO OF A PHOTO BEING TAKEN -- WAY BACK TO THE OLOMPALI YEARS.
NOTE: The person in between Bob and Bill is Ken Babbs, not a member of the Dead.
PIC INFO: Resolution at 1053x1557 -- Spotlight on a group portrait of American rock band, the GRATEFUL DEAD, photographed by Thomas Weir during the band's "Aoxomoxoa" period at Olompali State Park in Novato, California, c. 1969. 📸: Sylvia Clarke Hamilton.
OVERVIEW: "The Dead had a close connection to Olompali – it was, for them, something like sacred ground. After returning from Los Angeles in spring ’66, they moved to Rancho Olompali and stayed there through May and June, renting the property for several weeks.
Though they weren’t there long, they would remember their stay as an idyllic golden age, a “paradisiacal retreat.” (Although sometimes in their acid trips, they’d have threatening visions of the ancient Indians who’d used to live there, their spirits still haunting the walls and trees.)
The band held some famous parties during their stay, playing music for a stream of tripping visitors from San Francisco. On one occasion, May 22, they sent a flyer to all their friends in the music scene: "The Grateful Dead invite you to an afternoon of inter-galactic travel, to a communion with the spirits of long dead Indians, to a dance celebrating mainly all of us.""

Drop the Miku Binder TJ rant bestie
okay so like
i was just thinking about it, and, like, i think it's fucking nuts but also really weird how the hamilton fandom (which i'm in but i swear i'm not an uwu lams turtles shipper please) somehow took this CRUSTY, TERF-BANGED, UGLY, OLD, REDHEADED, RAPIST ASS MOTHERFUCKER,
and turned his ugly ass into this.
like damn what the hell- what- how???? okay like yeah, they're using daveed diggs as a base for this bullshit, which, okay, fine, but YOU DID NOT NEED TO ADD THE INFO. The idea itself is funny but also a bit weird, however im 99% sure Diggs himself wore that shirt. However, all of the extra info??? come on. Where'd the fandom get this istg y'all-
Also, also, they did something similar by making John Laurens (gay blonde dumbass) into an UWU turtles boy. ....why. Bi trash coffee gremlin tumblr over-worked sleep-deprived alexander hamilton. like yeah relatable but. why. small bean big sweater uwu innocent boy blushy short james madison. ...why. bro was stubborn and would pick a fight and was the 'fuck you' type of shy.
I just find it wild the fandom made this and it is the entirety of the fandom into one. There's the good sides, there's the bad, and there's this. Which encompasses the ENTIRE. FUCKING. FANDOM.
The fandom has its headcanons, it has its perks, but then you reach the side where everyone is just a wild fucking original character. They don't model the historical figures anymore- they're just OCs with the name 'Philip Hamilton' or 'John Laurens' or god forbid our third U.S president 'Thomas Jefferson' slapped onto it.
I'm also so confused as to how this is what the fandom is known for. We have some good fics, we have hella good art, we have a M U S I C A L , and then the first thought people have of the Ham fandom is Miku Binder Third President Founding Fucker Slaveowner Thomas Jefferson.
I also find it kind of offensive (almost put insluting oh my ufckjg-) that they made a founder become this but like he'd probably be really pissed so please keep fucking up his memory lmao he deserves it
But like... also why. What made them think of this.
Like yeah I write 20k word TR smut but you don't see me drawing it.
You don't see me making him an UWU e-boy.
...Eh I probably would for shits and giggles tbh
But like this is founding father Thomas Jefferson. Third Pres. Second VP. First Sec. of State. And he is a furry, ex-cocaine addict. Also btw do they mean John Laurens or John Adams as the former drug dealer part because neither are better but it'd really help
Also bro literally raped his 14 year old slave and had like 6 kids with her. He had her room DIRECTLY NEXT TO HIS. He RAPED HIS DEAD WIFE'S HALF-SISTER. AND HE'S A SAD UWU MAN WHO DID NOTHING WRONG?
Let's not forget this same person made a post saying Lizzie (the Queen) would be reincarnated as a horse when she died. I'm serious. Deadass.
However, it's also funny as fuck because this entire thing is a tarnish to Jefferson and I fucking HATE that bastard so like good job lol
At the same time though it's still super weird??? But insane??? Because how did this become one of the Tumblr exclusives??? like it's Tumblr history at this point. Twitter history. You cannot express any like for the Hamilton musical before you get the 'have you seen miku binder thomas jefferson' and it's like 'well shit'.
But also remember: THIS IS NOT AN OC TO FUCK AROUND WITH. Hamilton the Musical specifically gave you and presented you the founder. Thomas Jefferson. Played by Daveed Diggs. Just because it is played by a POC, but also modernized, and vastly different from the actual founder and President, does not mean that at its core it is NOT STILL THE SAME PERSON.
If you name it Thomas Jefferson, if you use the presentation of him given by Daveed Diggs, you are still using that white fucking slave-owning racist motherfucker, and that's the point of it all.
I find it stupid but funny but also insane, and I wouldn't care, unless I KNEW IT WAS SERIOUS. The artist made it seriously. They made John Laurens. They made Philip Hamilton. They did this seriously.
but like also look at this lmao
This meme of Thomas Jefferson in a Hatsune Miku binder really got trending on Twitter at one point
It's an infamous, hellish, classic meme of both Tumblr and the Hamilton fandom, and it deserves what attention it's got, but Jesus please never unironically make shit like this again, Hamilfans, we're stained by this we don't need another😭🔫
EDIT:
i have more
So like, I just remembered: it kinda romanticizes these guys??? The musical??? so like don't get me wrong i love the music but... it puts them into this light. This pink light. It paints Hamilton as an abolitionist who was outspoken about it. When, in reality, dude traded and sold slaves for his in-laws + wasn't all that outspoken about it + was against immigrants or migrants, WHEN DUDE WAS FROM THE ISLANDS. HE HAD SCOTTISH BLOOD. AND HE'S AGAINST IT? Hypocrisy at its finest.
Washington also owned slaves and ran his own plantation too, so he's not off the hook. Madison, the 'uwu small bean' of the fandom, also owned slaves and ran a plantation. So the main people of this entire fiasco are slave-owners. Perfect. But also I've heard Ron Chernow's book on Hamilton, the entire start of the musical, is a bit biased to Ham himself, so...
You could be saying 'but FDRsduckfloaty, Sally is mentioned!' yes. But however, not enough. Not more. It's not even implied more than potentially ONCE what he did, and I'm not sure it ever was! Cabinet battle 3 states it flat-out but it was cut. For your info, Ben Franklin and John Adams are the only two you can really like in the slavery aspect. Ben bought them but let them go for their freedom, and John detested slavery and was against it. Never owned one.
Jefferson did add a slavery clause to the declaration but it was discarded, and he didn't fight half as much as he could have. Maybe he did and since it was the 1700s he didn't have a lot of support, but surely he could've done something like, I don't know, call it out after his terms? Once you're done gaining your second term and out of office, they can't do shit to it or your presidency, since it's over.
So the musical itself has its own problem and the fandom is even worse. It blatantly disregards that a LOT. A hella lot of the amrev fandom + a small part of the ham fandom has called TJeffs out for it but I mean can we please not make shit like Miku Binder Jefferson and act like he wasn't an actual child rapist???
This video does pretty well at it. I will admit the tagline 'America then, told by America now' almost sends shivers down my spine for what it really means. But then again I find men not knowing they'd make it down into the history books for starting the world's global power and the world's economic powerhouse pretty interesting. Doing something big and knowing it's historical, but not that it's going to form a very, VERY large country, where you'll be honored down the road and called a Founding Father of an entire nation? Signing papers and not knowing they're the founding stones of a country and still looked up to today? Intriguing.
But like still fuck Thomas Jefferson lmao
youtube
there's a lot more videos on it that dig deep, but the point is, that Hamilton is a good musical with good songs but it's also very... complex, and a bit problematic, Thomas Jefferson is a little bitch, and you should stan 1776 before you ever stan Hamilton. 1776 does not do this. It is much more realistic. 1776 has Benjamin Franklin and that's an immediate win. Be more like a 1776, be less like a Hamilton.
#miku binder thomas jefferson#thomas jefferson#this is the rant that woulda stayed in drafts#rant post#hamilton fandom#not just hamilton no no the fandom itself
