Sahara (2005)

While I didn't enjoy this film, that doesn't mean you won't. No matter what I say, the people involved in this project did it: they actually made a movie. That's something to be applauded. With that established...

On paper, Sahara sounds like a slam dunk. It’s Indiana Jones meets James Bond with big stars like Matthew McConaughey and Penelope Cruz and armed with a budget to make all the stunt-filled adventure come to life. In practice, it’s devoid of any joy or excitement. Director Breck Eisner makes 124 minutes feel so much longer than two hours.

In 1865, the ironclad CSS Texas disappeared with the last of the Confederacy’s treasury gold. In present day, Dirk Pitt (Matthew McConaughey) has finally found a clue to its final resting place: Mali. With his longtime bud and fellow treasure-hunter Al Giordino (Steve Zahn), he investigates. Along the way, the meet WHO doctor Eva Rojas (Penelope Cruz) as she investigates a mysterious plague she fears will soon ravage the country.

Based on the novel by Clive Cussler, this film adaptation tries to do too much. Sahara is essentially two movies slammed together. The first is a swashbuckling adventure in the vein of Indiana Jones. Boat chases, car chases, fist fights, impromptu survival techniques in the desert and a long-lost treasure? There’s no mistaking it. The other movie has an inconspicuous, beautiful doctor embroiled in a plot that begins as a threat to Africa but could endanger the whole world and includes a solar-powered laser beam, a mad dictator and businessmen devoid of morals. The problem is that these two plots exist independently and are not well blended. In one scene, Dirk and Al are dodging entire clips’ worth of bullets with big smiles while coming up with crazy ways to take down the villains on their tail by blowing up their own boat. In the next, a single bullet is treated with enough gravitas to give you a headache.

Also problematic are the actors. Matthew McConaughey and Penelope Cruz are talented actors. Here? they’re awful. They’re even worse together. They have no chemistry whatsoever, which makes their plots feel even more akin to a mix of oil and water. You know they’re going to fall in love from the beginning but you’ll believe a metal boat from the American Civil War will make it across the ocean on no rations before you’ll believe that romance.

From the unfunny humor meant to endear you to the characters to the action scenes that prove the actors couldn’t throw a decent punch if their lives depended on it, Sahara suffers from major problems. It also gets the little things wrong. When Commander Rudi Gunn (Rain Wilson) approaches the United States Embassy for help, he's warned it’s unlikely aid will arrive in time because “No one gives a shit about Africa”. They're not wrong. Even this movie doesn't care about Mali or its people because moments later, we learn the thing that’s gruesomely killing en-masse will soon spread to the entire world. So it wasn’t enough that Mali would become the world's biggest graveyard; the entire human race has to be at risk? Yikes.

Then, there’s the climax. This is one of those movies where the villains must have the greatest employee benefits package of all time because the baddie's top bodyguard decides to get into a fistfight on top of a building that’s rigged to explode in a few minutes. How was he going to get out of there once he got the job done?

I can give a movie slack and accept a preposterous story but you’ve got to give me something in return. When your actors have no chemistry between them, the bad guys are completely forgettable, the humour falls flat on its face, the action scenes are badly shot & choreographed and none of what you see is interesting, you want to find some way to entertain yourself, perhaps by having some laughs at the film’s expense. You'd think it'd be easy when the Los Angeles Times listed this film as one of the most expensive flops of all time but you'd be wrong. Sahara is too dull to provide any form of entertainment. Regarding my SBI/DSMP Fics

With all that has happened, I did want to come out here and make my stance clear. I will always stand with Shelby (Shubble) and all of the victims who are speaking out against Will Gold (Wilbur Soot). If you still support that bastard, unfollow me and leave my blog and whatever small community I made.

I've already stated this is my Discord channel, but I want to put it here too.

For me, c!Wilbur is so far removed from cc!Wilbur that I don't connect the two. The characters are vessels for my own characterizations and stories. It's a bit like writing Supernatural*, Twilight, or Hazbin Hotel fanfics. I don't support the guy, monetarily or otherwise, he does not interact with fanfics, I have plans to be very vocal that I'm on Shelby's side no matter what/make it clear that what Will did is wrong, and I don't use his real life events as plots in my stories. At least, I certainly don't try to. It's why I typically change traits about the characters. (I.e. Tommy is shorter, Phil is taller, Techno is bulky, and Wilbur always has golden/hazel eyes.)

I'm aware that it's a tad different because it's rp and not something like a full on book or an actor in a movie, but DSMP has also been over for over two years and the characterizations I make for SBI are not at all based on the CCs. Real life Techno isn't a literal terrorist, Phil ain't a father married to a goddess, Tommy is not a traumatized child soldier, and Wilbur isn't suicidal and blowing up countries.

I think I'll likely focus more on Techno, Tommy, and Phil for a while, but I'm not gonna let one dude ruin a fandom and things I've made for myself. Nothing I write is ever made for Wilbur, as I've seen people saying. Additionally, Wilbur was not the only writer. Technoblade, Philza, TommyInnit, and so many others made that story what it was. Not him.

However, if any CCs come forward saying they don't want their old characters interacting with his, I will respect that.

Though I do think there is a tendency to take real life events (i.e. Techno's cancer, LJ's music, Tommy's real life parents, etc.) and put them into fiction about DSMP. I, however, don't try to do that and have stated before that I don't feel comfortable doing so. The truth is that we have not gotten any genuine SBI content outside of DSMP for years. The dynamic in real life is very different from what was presented in the DSMP. Did personalities still bleed over? Yes, I'm not going to deny that, but I'm not going to act like they're exactly the same between character and person either. We've had that conversation like in 2021, it's why we have C! and CC!.

The rather sad truth is, SBI is what got me really into writing and it's a comfort for me that nothing can compare to. Obviously, I don't think it's appropriate to be writing certain types of stories right now or to be involving characters made by CCs outside of the DSMP. I think it's up to everyone else to decide on what they want to do, however, rushing it also isn't the way to go either. Give yourself time to heal and think it over first instead of throwing away something that gives you comfort and has not been associated with by the creators for over two years.

Anyways, fuck Will Gold. Fuck the fact that he hurt so many people, and fuck that he lied and manipulated his way around the damn internet. ESPECIALLY fuck the fact that he tried to diminish what he did and not take proper accountability.

Go and support Shelby so so much, she and everyone who spoke out really deserve it. I'm glad silence on these types of issues is not being normalized.

I don't need to be psychic to know what Amanda is accusing Dream of isn't a crime, I just read the allegations myself.

It's not grooming because she's using the word incorrectly (she outright says in the tiktoks that "grooming is when a cc makes a fan feel special because he wants something from them"). The timeline she claims puts the alleged sexting three weeks before she turned 18 and she's in a state where the age of consent is 16. There's no accusation that he coerced her, abused his power or made unwanted advances, by all accounts it was consensual. Her accusations focus on how she was technically 17 at the time of the alleged sexting but as established before, that's not a crime.

All of which doesn't take into account that her evidence amounts to showing dry instagram dms where she initiated all the conversations and 3 compliments out of context. The burden of proof is on her and she failed to even establish that there was flirting.

Considering just how many false allegations happened to this group of ccs, and that in the one case where the allegations weren't false it looked a lot different than this (screenshots showing the grooming taking place for one, as well as a lot of people stepping forward and giving solid evidence), there's no reason to suspect this is anything different until new evidence or new allegations come to light.

From all I can tell the element in the air is whether and/or how sexting and/or advances over Snapchat occurred.

Dream calls some of the screenshots (that, given, he claims were not/could not have been him) "flirty" himself; this means that they were agreed upon as flirty by both allegedly involved parties, and either Amanda or Dream is lying about whether it was him. In the same twtlonger Dream says a lot of extremely strange contradictory stuff and goes off on irrelevant tangents and blame shifting; at absolute best the accuser is lying and he is responding by making a word vomit twtlonger, which is itself cringe. In any case Dream's twtlonger does not make his word convincingly reliable, especially with how he also makes sure to downplay the severity of the situation If he did it

However if anything properly sketchy happened it would have had to happen on Snapchat and we Just Do Not Know That Existed. If they were sexting on Snapchat esp with the context of her being a stan that is an iffy situation in itself (see earlier) and could have been worse depending on the nature of the Snapchat exchanges. Honestly, even the fact that he gave someone his priv Snapchat with only the context of knowing she was a fan is ?? in itself and is again even w/ no malintent Weird Conduct Around Fans. And while yes afaict no direct allegations we're made of specifically unwanted advances &c, the sheer fact, again, that these exchanges would've happened on a platform that handles messages like Snapchat does between a 30mil subscriber YouTuber and someone he only knows as a fan is indicative of, again, at least an irresponsibly handled power dynamic, and at worst a situation where consent is questionable in general + again while we Do Not Know what happened on Snapchat, we DO know that him offering his private Snapchat is real By His Own Admission

While I agree that there is no current evidence it was grooming and the definition she gives is certainly Lacking, the RAINN definition of grooming is "manipulative behaviors that the abuser uses to gain access to a potential victim, coerce them to agree to the abuse, and reduce the risk of being caught." One can, I hope, see why this is not an out of pocket interpretation of Aforementioned handing out of a private Snapchat (a platform where it is harder to get caught) to someone with a parasocial bond (insert things people smarter than I have said about cc/fan dynamics). IFF the allegations that they sexted over Snapchat are true, this tracks with that definition. It is NOT PROVEN that this dynamic was leveraged or that sexting happened, but I fail to see how applying the term "grooming" to the situation if that IS how it transpired would be out of line

And that all taken with how he has been responding to this, how "it wasn't provably grooming" (true) is being taken to negate "giving out private Snap to fans who you've exchanged like three token words with is weird" (it doesn't, it's still something people could take issue with reasonably), the nature of his twtlonger (Bad), the flippancy in general with how this has been treated – even in the best case scenario, this is still someone who couldn't be held to account even if something did happen, which is not a position that anyone should be in, especially not someone with as long and repeated a history of irresponsibility as Dream

The crux of this to me is He Is Bad At Managing His Platform And Reckoning With The Power He Has As A Result Of It. Even if he never had predatory intent, or even if the accuser is lying, he is not handling this reasonably at all, and his legal team is either negligent or nonexistent considering what he's continued to be doing (including also messaging fans back? Like you're not even taking a break?) so again even in the scenario where this is completely just lies he's being crazy irresponsible about a libel case and about accusations As A Concept. Like that's what it comes down to in my mind. This Cannot Continue. What we KNOW to be real Cannot Continue, and whether predation happened is something to still be In The Air With because it is a Court Case that Might Be Proven One Or Another Way as Snapchat DMs are found. (If, that is, they are in fact in court, which they frankly should be bc again If He Is Innocent This Is Libel And Unacceptable). Even and especially if you think Dream is innocent and are invested in continuing to follow his content how he is interacting with this situation is something that you Cannot Accept

I don't think the comparison you draw entirely holds up; these things execute differently and for instance this is different from the false accusations against other streamers like Sapnap and BBH which were swiftly and entirely disproven with accusers backing down in the face of legal action and with no weird twtlonger nonsense. That reaction, the pattern of Dream's irresponsibility w/ platform in general, etc are why I think this can in fact be taken differently than the false allegations made prior

TL;DR: We Truly Do Not Know whether it was grooming until the Snapchat recoveries drop, but the Confirmed Actions And Behavior Priorities Of Dream are something that I think are concerning in someone with such a platform In General even in the best case scenario wherein this is libel

It's like watching a horror film and notifying the people who made it to tell them you think they're disgusting. And the song is about animalistic tendencies, I'm talking about eating someone alive. It was supposed to be creepy! I play the role of the creep, it's literally a character out of a movie. It was the last video I would have expected to receive any criticism on that front. The trivialisation of these serious crimes, like stalking, should have no place in the entertainment industry." Levine reacted to the controversy in a 2018 interview with The Independent, saying "That was fucking ridiculous. Jessica Valenti of The Guardian criticized the video for attempting to make violence against women seem "edgy" stating that "there is nothing 'alternative' about showing women being stalked, hunted, raped or killed because it’s something that happens every damn day." RAINN (Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network) released a statement condemning the video, which wrote that "No one should ever confuse the criminal act of stalking with romance. After an erotic dream, Levine wakes up in a shock and returns to stalking Prinsloo by standing outside her apartment in the rain watching in a dazed state, leading to the similar opening. Eventually, Levine is left with no luck, so he goes back to fantasizing about the girl. Though Prinsloo is amused by Levine and his interest in her, she spends the evening talking to her girlfriends instead.

One evening, Levine follows the woman into a nightclub, where he tries to talk to her. Intercut with this are scenes of a shirtless Levine dripping in fake blood, singing the song inside a meat locker and using animal carcasses for punching bags (referencing to the film Rocky (1976). He also watches the woman in her sleep and takes numerous photos of Prinsloo, which he later trims and places on wires around a dark room. After she leaves, an infatuated Levine begins to stalk the woman by following her in the streets and standing outside her apartment in the pouring rain to watch her. The video starts with a woman entering a slaughterhouse, where Levine's character works. Synopsis Ī scene from video what it presents a fantasy that features feature Levine and Prinsloo as obsessed lovers having sex whilst disrobed and covered in real blood. The story of the video is inspired by the film American Psycho (2000). The other musicians of Maroon 5 (including their touring member Sam Farrar, who appeared in a music video of the band for the very first time) also make an appearance - they are seen playing at a nightclub in some scenes of the video. Directed by Samuel Bayer, the video features Adam Levine and his wife, Behati Prinsloo who portrays the woman. The music video was released on Septemon Vevo. Rolling Stone ranked "Animals" at number 32 on its year-end list of the 50 best songs of 2014. Lyrically, it describes a relationship Levine desperately wants to have with his love interest, with animal-related double entendres: "Baby, I'm preying on you tonight / Hunt you down, eat you alive / Just like animals, animals, like animals-make / Maybe you think that you can hide / I can smell your scent from miles / Just like animals, animals, like animals-mals."
