location: Lyons’ Pub
when: Sunday, late afternoon
status: closed | @miles-easton
It was a good day, Seamus had woke up at the crack of noon to a very hungry and needy ginger named Pouncival digging their claws into his chest. After feeding them and starting the day off finishing off the rest of his substance supply. There was only one pill left and it wasn’t even the good kind. This meant they needed to go out much quicker than his normal pace. In quick fashion, he changed out of last night’s clothes while he had a conversation with his cat. Showering was not an option so in lieu of that he pulled on some clean-ish clothes from the floor and doused himself in cologne or perfume. They couldn’t tell what bottle they grabbed but it smelled fantastic and that was all that mattered.
First, before anything, he needed to get food. There was never anything but cat food and condiments at his place. While he thought about it, he remembered Lyons’ was showing the futbol game and he wouldn’t mind catching at least a few minutes of it while he waited for a heaping box of fried potatoes. He entered the pub and put his order in with the front hostess, eyes glued on the screen. They made their way up to the counter to reach over for his drink and bumped into the man already standing ahead of him. “Oh! Oh, ouch, bad vibe.” He went to apologize to Miles when he recognized him, but was thrown off by the ripping pain usually associated with a transformation going through his body. But, that wasn’t right. He didn’t do that, why would he do that? And how was it so fast? He worked his face while he tried to figure out what happened and looked back over to the now same height witch he’d just touched. Then to the ground where a shed of skin sat.
Tumblr media
“Uh, so this awkward...” He grimaced a grin at him. “Anyway you did some weird witchy thing for funsies and made this, well.....” he motioned to himself, well theirself. “Miiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiles, you’re gorgeous and all, babe, you really are but I don’t want this.” He whined and pouted, his feet shuffling like a teenager that just got told ‘no’.

Little Penguins are known from the coast of Australia and New Zealand
Tumblr media
Physical Description: Little Penguins are some of the most adorable penguins alive today, and the reason is clear: they’re smol! Little Penguins range in size between 40 and 45 centimeters in length, and none weigh more than 2.1 kilograms. They are a blue-grey on their backs and white on their bellies and necks. They have very small flippers, which can be entirely blue or blue only in the center with white banding around it. They have short little tails and small feet, which are formed into lightly orange flippers. Their beaks are short and round, and either light in color or dark depending on the population. The juveniles tend to be a somewhat duller color than the adults, but usually very similar overall.
Tumblr media

Diet: Little Penguins feed mainly on fish that form schools in the pelagic zone of the ocean (rather than closer to the coast). They’ll also feed on cephalopods and crustaceans.
Tumblr media

Behavior: These nocturnal penguins will capture their food via pursuit-diving, mainly swimming around schools of fish in tighter and tighter circles until finally - woosh! - they dive into the middle and grab as much food as they can. In shallower water, they do pursue the fish more directly. They can dive as deep as 50 meters underwater, sometimes more - including 69 meters deep. They go up to 62 kilometers away from the nesting and sleeping colony sites, though they can usually only go a fraction of that in a single day and longer distances are reserved for multiple day trips. Females tend to forage more than the males. They feed alone, though they do forage in groups. They are extremely noisy in their colonies, making a variety of trills, brays, growls, grunts, yelping, trumpeting, and wailing sounds to one another. They do not migrate, but do stay near the breeding colony extensively during the moulting and nesting season. Juveniles will leave the colony for a large amount of time, but do eventually return to breed where they were born.

Little Penguins begin breeding in July and continue through December, though it varies from colony to colony and from year to year. They tend to stick to one nest site for their whole lives and are also fairly monogamous, though they do divorce from their partners around 76% of the time. If they are unsuccessful in raising any chicks one year, the next year they are more likely to divorce than not. The nests are made in a little bit far apart from one another in the colonie, usually a burrow in the sand lined with plant material. Usually two eggs are laid in the nest and are incubated for a little more than one month by both parents. The chicks hatch extremely fluffy and greyish-brown; they then molt to look dark brown and grey another month later. At this time young birds will form creches together for two more months, hanging out and learning from each other. They then fledge and become juveniles two more months later. They become sexually mature at two to four years of age, and can live for up to 20 years (though shorter is more common). The chicks and nesting colonies tend to feed at dusk.

Ecosystem: Little Penguins live mainly in sandy and rocky coasts, usually near the bases of cliffs and in sand dunes. They will spend most of their time in temperate to sub-arctic marine waters, many miles offshore. They are preyed upon by cats, dogs, rats, foxes, lizards, snakes, ferrets, stoats, seals, and some other ocean predators. They are mostly affected by introduced mammalian predators at this time.
Tumblr media

Other: While Little Penguins are, overall, doing alright and are even common in terms of population  management; however, a number of human-created threats are affecting certain colonies and bringing many of them to the verge of collapse. Uncontrolled hunting by domesticated dogs and cats are major causes of colony destruction, as are oil spills, fishing interactions (including being caught in nets), human interference and development, as well as cullings by humans attempting to manage populations of other birds. As such, Little Penguins are of major interest for ecological groups in order to preserve their populations in light of these threats. Fossils of this species are known from its current range from the recent ice age.

Q&A: Practice, Practice Practice
Would learning to use a sword for the first time cause muscle fatigue or blisters? At what age should fantasy characters typically start learning? How long does it take to become ‘skilled’? For some reason I’m having trouble figuring out how to write a realistic progression.
There’s a certain level where this question can’t be answered because “fantasy” covers a vast range, and even medieval fantasy could cover a variety of different weapons that are all under the “sword” header. Besides that, the amount of time it takes for someone to become proficient depends on their dedication and opportunities for training.
The basic issue with writing a training sequence in fiction is that you are instructing the audience as well as the character. You have to write the teacher and student both. If you can’t do that, then you can’t write the scene. Teaching requires you have the knowledge necessary to, well, teach. If you don’t know then you need to learn, and learning requires a lot of work.
If you’ve never learned how to fight, never spent a lot of time acquiring a similar skill set, or never done any martial arts of any kind then, yes, you’ll have difficulty figuring out a realistic training progression that your character went through.
So, let’s start with something simple. The easiest way to figure out “realistic” progression is to:
A) Do your research on historical figures.
C) Do your research on the art of sword fighting. There’s a lot of great references available out there. I suggest starting with Skallagrim and Matt Easton.
B) Correlate to your own experiences.
Have you ever done sports? Even sports you were forced to do as part of high school gym class? Have you ever run a mile? You couldn’t get enough air, your muscles were killing you (including some you never knew existed), you wanted to die, some asshole teacher kept yelling at  you to hurry up, and you hated it?
In broad strokes, learning to fight is a lot like that and the people you hated in gym class like the teacher’s pets who enjoyed physical exercise and were really good at it because they were also athletes… those are the ones who’d be the good fighters in your story.
If you’ve never engaged in any other serious exercise then internalize your high school gym experiences. Especially the embarrassing, sweaty, tired, bloated, painful, red-faced, gasping parts or, you know, failing to do any pull ups at all when asked. Think about how much you hated pushups. Now, think about this, your character is going to be doing lots, and lots, and lots of those!
If your character gets to hold a sword during their first lesson (doubtful, but possible), it won’t be a real one. They’ll get a practice sword, which will either be made of wood or blunted metal.
Then, they’ll spend the entirety of that lesson learning how to stand, and (maybe) how to hold their practice sword.
Eastern martial arts like the Korean, Japanese, and Chinese martial curriculums won’t let you touch a weapon during the first four years of training. Many Chinese martial arts have a very specific progression between weapons because the techniques you learn feed into each other. The staff is the foundational weapon, then the sword, then upwards until you reach the chain weapons like the meteor hammer, dart, and whip chain which are the most difficult to control.
Western martial arts aren’t quite as structured, but they’re still structured. I’m going to assume this character is not some peasant farmer called up as a levy, who has a spear thrust into their hands and thrown out into battle to die for their lord. If you’re thinking of your character as a trained martial combatant, trained by someone be it the castle arms master or someone else, then they’re going to have to learn the basics, and those start with…
FOOTWORK!
This is the rule of all martial arts: if your foundation sucks then you’re going to die. Or, at the very least, you will lose.
You don’t start swinging a sword around, you start with your feet and your legs. You’ve got to learn to perform two actions at once, by moving your arm in a way that’s different from your legs, and combine both into a single movement then link them all together into a multitude of movements. You need to build up muscles in your calves, hamstrings, and thighs. You’ve got to develop balance. Balance starts with learning how to set your feet. You’ve got to have your stances or a stiff wind will blow you over.
You can’t just take blows, you need to learn how to, and the final arbiter of staying upright is not your arms or your upper body but your feet. A shallow stance means you cannot maintain your balance, bad footwork will let your enemy know you’re coming, and you’ll never reach them. You can’t close the distance.
Footwork is one of the main tells between a professional/trained fighter and an untrained fighter. Body position is ingrained from the beginning to the point where you no longer need to think about it.
When martial artists talk about foundation, they’re talking not just talking about basic techniques, they’re literally talking about where you put your feet.
Have you ever stood with your knees bent at a forty-five degree angle, leaning forward onto the balls of your feet for one to two, much less five to ten minutes? If not, then yes, you will experience muscular fatigue.
Now, let’s get to…
CONDITIONING!
You gotta build that endurance.
The average fight will only last around thirty seconds, but you will be sprinting all out. You may be fighting multiple small battles in a large engagement, and when your body gives out then you die.
What most people mistake about swords is the idea that they’re heavy. They’re not. However, keeping two to four pounds in continuous motion for a couple minutes much less the length of a full fledged melee is exhausting. You want to run in a flat out sprint for thirty minutes? No. No, you don’t.
So, what does this mean? A large portion of your character’s early (and later) training will involve conditioning similar to what you experienced in gym class in the beginning, and grow ever more intense!
You will do your morning exercises and stretches to loosen up your muscles (because starting cold is asking for injury), then go on your jog, then you get to practice techniques, then go on another run, get a bout of conditioning, then run up a hill, and then finish up with end of day stretches before eating dinner and falling into bed.
Rinse, lather, repeat.
The point of conditioning is not to push you past what you’re capable of, but to push you past what you think you’re capable of. Building wind and muscle requires work, practicing your techniques when you’re tired helps you learn to push through exhaustion, and you need repetition to ingrain these techniques into your muscle memory to the point they become instinctive reactions. You get used to your muscles being tired so you can force them to work when you need them.
Conditioning is a training ladder, you find a variety of humps to get over, and after you manage past each then training gets easier for a short period, then more gets added and you start all over again.
Repetition, Repetition, Repetition
You will do those basics over and over and over and over and over and over again before you ever get to try them on another live human being, and when you finally get to they will be slowly structured by a one two three count breakdown where the entire attack is broken apart, then you get to do it at slow speed, then half-speed, then full-speed, and then one day in the far flung future you’ll get to spar. Not with a real sword, but with a blunted training sword and in padded gear so you don’t kill your partner.
Proficiency is Practice, Practice Takes Time
How fast does it take for someone to become proficient? At the very least, in a couple of months you could train someone to be infantry fodder. Consider this, a medieval knight began his education at the age of seven and was considered battlefield ready by the age of twenty-one. He probably saw combat before then as a squire when he became one at fourteen, but we’re looking at a training period of seven years for live combat training and seven years prior for general education. So, timetable necessary to produce a combat elite is fourteen years.
Now, the average knight knew how to do a lot more than swing a sword. He could handle a variety of weaponry, could fight on horseback, and presumably hold a leadership position over his lord’s infantry. A knight is a combat elite.
Your character who started training at eighteen will be overrun by the guy who started training at seven. They have a decade of training and battlefield experience on the other guy.
The men and women in their thirties are crazy good.
Masters have been doing this for thirty to forty years.
You should decide early on how good you want your character to be and plan their backstory accordingly. It’s fine if they’re not at the top, but it’s worth understanding that combat is baked into warrior cultures like the vikings or the germanic tribes. Their kids practiced spear throwing by throwing sticks back and forth as a game, then graduated as adults to catching javelins and throwing them back at Roman legionaries.
Development of Skill Requires Desire and Dedication
How quickly your character progresses will depend on their desire and their dedication. The person who wants to do this will progress faster than the person who doesn’t, who slacks off, and does the bare minimum. All the natural talent in the world won’t change that.
This is the problem a lot of fantasy novels and YA novels face with the protagonist versus their training rival. The training rival is often the guy working harder than the protagonist, especially when they don’t want to be there. A lot of the time, there’s no legitimate reason for the best in class training rival to even feel threatened by these protagonists. They’re no threat to them or their position in the class, and I use “threat” loosely.
I have a lot of experience with the kids in training classes who don’t want to be there. Trust me, as someone who once was one and who was their instructor, they don’t progress. Most of them quit at the earliest opportunity. The ones with a lot of natural talent who just put in the bare minimum because everything is easy end up middling to mediocre if not plain bad.
Physical training is pretty much 90% mental, which means you don’t become good just by showing up. You choose to commit. You chase excellence. You choose to push through the exhaustion and pain by sheer willpower. Most importantly, you don’t give up. You’re defined by tenacity, and your willingness to push past what you believe to be possible.
The guy or girl who is the best is the one who shows up to class earliest and leaves last. They eat, sleep, and dream their training.
Top level athletes are the ones who have sacrificed everything to their craft. The younger they are, then the more time they’ve devoted to that singular aspect of their life at the expense of everything else.
This is what they want.
So, decide early what your actual goal is for this character and their level of skill. Then, you need go learn about different kinds of swords, training, sports education, etc. Once you have those two things, it’ll be easier to figure out the rate your character progresses at.

we commemorate the birthday of perhaps the greatest of all black Americans, Frederick Douglass, founding father of the long black freedom struggle in the United States.
Frederick Douglass (born Frederick Augustus Washington Bailey; c. February 1818 – February 20, 1895) was an African-American social reformer, abolitionist, orator, writer, and statesman.
Frederick Douglass told a Baltimore audience in 1877:
“I am an Eastern Shoreman, with all that name implies. Eastern Shore corn and Eastern Shore pork gave me my muscle. I love Maryland and the Eastern Shore!”
Douglass also wrote:
I was born in Tuckahoe, near Hillsborough, and about twelve miles from Easton, in Talbot county, Maryland. (Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, An American Slave, ch. 1)
If you lived today near Frederick Douglass’s birthplace, you’d have a Cordova, Maryland, mailing address. And your kids might attend Chapel District Middle School. But you’d never say, “I’m from Tuckahoe.”
In Douglass’s time, “Tuckahoe” might refer to all of Talbot County near the west bank of the Tuckahoe River. But this reference alone was too vague for historians to pinpoint the birthplace. So, in the 20th century, the Maryland Historical Society placed its historic marker honoring Douglass at the south end of the bridge that carries MD 328 over the Tuckahoe, seven miles from the actual site <http://choptankriverheritage.org/wp3/?p=14> .
Power concedes nothing without a demand. It never did and it never will.
If there is no struggle, there is no progress.
It is easier to build strong children than to repair broken men.

Maverick: [adj] unorthodox, non-conformist, original.
The first ever Maverick launch party (held in the Bedford’s ornate circular Club Room or, as headliner Sam Morrow joked, “Shakespeare’s Globe”) highlighted the festival’s broad church, with three very different takes on all things Americana.
Despite looking like a music hall comedy duo in dapper turn of the century outfits, the Henry Brothers delivered a fantastic set of old murder and mortality ballads (beloved of early country acts like the Louvin Brothers) on resonator, upright bass and eye-watering bittersweet Old Time vocal harmonies. An interesting insight to the psychology of the popular music fan of yesteryear, but it was hard not to smile at the jolliness of Two Little Rosebuds (a drowned-child public service announcement) and the stark psychopathic matter-of-factness of Knoxville Girl, while their clever rework of I Don’t Like Mondays was a hoot!
Another duo, Broken Islands, took us closer to the “C” word (as festival director Paul Spencer said!) Also suitably attired for their more modern country vibe, Dan Beaulaurier (guitar and vox) and Claire Rabbitt (vox) gave a set of eclectic covers drawing on the late 60s/early 70s country revival: from Gillian Welch’s mesmeric Crosbyish Tennessee with Claire’s sultry low register twinned with simple harmonies from Dan in a stylish minor to major shifting chorus, to the Everlys-via-Gram-and-Emmylou up-close-and-personal Love Hurts. Emmylou was the thread linking sveral songs: another Parsons Nashville renaissance number, Return Of The Grievous Angel with Dan’s mellow drawl partnered by high harmonies; Dylan’s Oh, Sister, where Dan whistled the originals harp/fiddle lines; and her own more recent track Gold, where Claire’s sardonic lead recounted a tale of failing to meet unreasonable expectations. A particular high point was Neil Young’s Only Love Can Break Your Heart, Dan taking the lead on the classic Youngian mix of grungy overdriven (baritone) guitar and fragile vocals, all in a deceptively pretty waltz time.
Although he does have albums of gentle acoustic introspection, Sam Morrow’s set with a full band (Damon Atkins on lead guitar, bass Adam Arcos, and Brit sit-in Ben Gonzalez on drums) was full-fat southern rock with shades of ZZ Top, Skynyrd and Little Feat, particularly in the louche Heartbreak Man: loose-limbed drum-and-bass propelling Sam’s Lowell-cum-Ronnie gravelly drawl and Damon adding chicken-picking, fusiony tones and Collinsesque runs. Another loping Feat beat underpinned Willie Nelson’s Shotgun Willie, with squawking two-guitar interweaving and closing hook, while Quick Fix’s Dixie Chicken-vibe was topped with sinuous stinging slide.
Sam displayed a very Rev Billy G timbre in a cover of the Top’s Sharp Dressed Man, as well as an aggressive guitar break to complement Damon’s muscle car acceleration slide, and the supertight drum and bass continued into the metronomic discotastic strut of Cigarettes, with Sam’s sleazy vox-and-guitar unison lines and a squealing Rossington/Collins run from Damon. That vibe recurred in Girls, a punchy mix of soul and barroom boogie, and the Skynyrd-do-Boy-Named-Sue muscular country of Barely Holding On: rapid-fire vocal and shitkicking beat turning rockier with an impressive a cappella scream and acerbic guitar.
San Fernando Sunshine (named for Houston-born Sam’s adopted home) was something special: a minimalist kick-and-snare waltz (with an off-kilter twist in sevens) drove the twangsome late-Cash riff, with an anthemic gritty-growl-and-powerchord chorus and slide filigree accents. A barrelling soul middle eight led back to the stadium rock chorus and a surprise discursive solo from Sam building to jambandesque twin-guitar harmony plinking.
More overtly country-proper were the Cale-meets-Cash frantic chug of Good Ole Days, a dig at the Make America Great Again brigade; the mellow two-step of Coming Home with its emotional Nashville vibrato, sweet harmonies and melodic picking; and the slow Lowell Georgeish See Crooked, Talk Straight (a new number) with its slinky bottom-end hook. A cover of Steve Earle’s Feel Alright, an expansive jangling anthemic progression with a touch of Lou Reed, saw another twangsome hook expand into a two-guitar harmony version culminating in a blizzard-of-cymbal big rock ending.
The final two songs of the set showed off a bit more of the band’s jamming sensibilities: the bustling Outlaws-y southern rocker The Deaf Conductor featured excellent country-style picking and meaty chords, masterful drumming and a taut rocking vocal before Adam’s bass led out a Mountain Jam-like exquisite twin guitar passage with fine to-you-to-me interplay; finally a tight disco-beat-driven Paid By The Mile (think Things Goin’ On with added mirrorball) saw rich vocals, staccato picking and slick two-guitar unison lines leading to a funky jamming breakdown, segueing via Tulsa Time (including a subtle change in rhythm) and back before speeding to a hectic finish.
A brilliant pick-n-mix of the kind of thing you can expect over the three days of this year’s Maverick Festival, roll on July 5th!
Maverick Festival will take place on 5th, 6th and 7th July 2019 at Easton Farm Park, Easton, Woodbridge, Suffolk IP13 0EQ

MassHousing (The Massachusetts Housing Finance Agency) is an independent, quasi-public agency created in 1966 and charged with providing financing for affordable housing in Massachusetts. The Agency raises capital by selling bonds and lends the proceeds to low- and moderate-income homebuyers and homeowners, and to developers who build or preserve affordable and/or mixed-income rental housing. MassHousing does not use taxpayer dollars to sustain its operations, although it administers some publicly funded programs on behalf of the Commonwealth. Since its inception, MassHousing has provided more than $22 billion for affordable housing.

Baptism of William and Violate Burgess, Children Horace, Harrison, and Rosina
“Simeon Carter was born in June 1794 in Connecticut.  In 1830, Elder Parley P. Pratt left a Book of Mormon at Simeon Carter’s house in Amherst, Ohio, and, as he read, it wrought deeply upon Simeon’s mind.  He went fifty miles to Kirtland to inquire more about the Church and was there baptized and ordained an Elder.  He then returned to his home and commenced to preach and baptize. A church of about sixty members was soon organized at Amherst.”1  In 1831, he served a mission in Missouri and returned to Ohio in September of that same year.
Orson Pratt was baptized in 1830 by his brother, Parley P. Pratt. He served two missions and moved to Hiram, Portage County, Ohio. in December 1831, Simeon and Orson both attended a conference about three weeks later on January 25, 1832.  Some of the elders asked for divine guidance and the Prophet, Joseph Smith, received a revelation which eventually became the 75th section of the Doctrine and Covenants.  Both Orson Pratt and Simeon Carter were mentioned in the following verses.
D&C 75:14 And again, verily I say unto my servant Lyman Johnson, and unto my servant Orson Pratt, they shall also take their journey into the eastern countries; and behold, and lo, I am with them also, even unto the end.
D&C 75:30 Wherefore, let my servant Simeon Carter and my servant Emer Harris be united in the ministry;
Orson Pratt was ordained a high priest by Sidney Rigdon on 2 February 1832. He then left on a mission with Lyman Johnson and William Snow to eastern United States.
Emer Harris, along with Simeon Carter, and his brothers Jared Carter and John S Carter left on a mission to Vermont.  They established branches of the church at North West Bay and Bolton, in Chittenden Co., Vermont, in the summer 1832. Sometime in their travels they must have made their way through upstate New York, because Harrison wrote the following:
“I lived with my parents until I was upwards of fourteen years of age, and a part of the time afterwards, and being the oldest of my father's family I was kept constantly at work and had but little opportunity in acquiring an education. My father made no profession of Religion but led a moral and virtuous life. My childhood was not marked with any crime although I paid but little or no attention to religion until the seventeenth year of my age, in July 1832, when I first heard the fullness of the Gospel proclaimed by Elder Simeon Carter. At this time, I was convinced that the scriptures were true and that the Book of Mormon was a Divine Revelation from Heaven. I was baptized by Elder Simeon Carter and confirmed a member of the Church of Latter-day Saints by Orson Pratt. (1 Oct 1832) I spent the following winter in going to school, working for my board, and in meeting with the Saints.”2
Great-great-great-grandfather, Horace Burgess, who is Harrison’ brother, heard Simeon’s brother John Carter, preach. He wrote the following:
“In my 16 year I was chosen to educate for a minister of Sectarianism. But I went to hear Elder John Carter a preacher of the Gospel of Christ and I soon was baptized by Elder Orson Pratt in Lake George 1832 and on the same day bore testimony to the truth.
I know the Book of Mormon to be true and also that Joseph was sent of God to bring in the last dispensation and to set up the kingdom of God in the last days.”
Elder William Snow, who was also there preaching, wrote in his journal about the baptism. According to Elder Snow’s diary, Horace, Horace’s sister Rosina, and their parents were baptized on the same day.3 “William Burgess, Jr. later wrote that ‘most of his family joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. This was Dec. 2nd, 1832.’”4
NOTES:. Orson Pratt was Marilee’s 5th cousin 6 times removed through the Atkinson side and Charles’ 6th cousin 5 times removed on the Crismon side. Marilee is related to his father, Charles is related to his mother.
