So, if I, perchance, started writing a fun little fic where Charles, Edwin & Crystal accidentally summon an Alternate Universe!Charles who is already in love with and obsessed with Edwin, in their attempts to save Niko from the Astral Plane, what should I call Alternate Universe!Charles - Charlie or Rowland? (this is my way of being able to tap into the absolute goldmine that is jealous Charles by having him be, funnily enough, jealous of HIMSELF when this AU!Version of him starts putting the moves on his Edwin - who Charles is currently not actually with).

Charles compares them to Orpheus and Eurydice. Charles who never finished the story. Charles who only knows the part where they loved each other, how they were IN love with each other. He doesn’t know about the tragedy. To him Orpheus and Eurydice made it, to him they’re happy because how could two people so in love with each other not make it. Charles is comparing HIMSELF to Orpheus, who would do anything to keep them together, who fell in love with Eurydice at first sight, because he did. Loving Edwin, for him, has always been as easy and instinctual as breathing (if he still needed to). The moment he died all he wanted was to stay with Edwin, his love for Edwin has always been there. So of course he would go to hell for him, because they love each other, because like Orpheus, Charles can not and will not exist without Edwin.

Edwin/Charles — Shared amnesia curse

At some point earlier in their partnership, Charles and Edwin accepted a case involving a powerful magic user they ultimately defeated and sent to Hell. They'd been slowly falling in love for years by then, and finally got together.

The magic user noticed, and just before Hell grabbed them, they cursed Charles and Edwin to forget they ever fell in love, and to forget every time they fall in love. Every year or two, Charles & Edwin realize their romantic feelings for each other, and as soon as they act on their feelings, they both forget.

Crystal joining the agency means that for the first time, someone is close enough to the boys to notice all this. As soon as Charles admits his feelings for Edwin, both of them forget the stairway confession in Hell and the reciprocation and go back to being repressed best friends. Crystal, who's been listening to Charles hash out his feelings for weeks, knows this is fucked up, and sets out to fix it.

+ Crystal enlists a very confused and skeptical Edwin to break the curse. ++ They regain all the lost memories. +++ Charles fell first the first time. ++++ Charles senses the curse somehow, so every time they go through the cycle, he resists his feelings more, because on some level he knows giving in will cause them to reset. +++++ Niko's back; she can't miss watching them fall in love twice!

“Perhaps we should move on,” Edwin says. As curious as he is to learn the history of the room and Charles’ presence in it, he more than understands the need to leave certain memories behind. “I believe the deeper we go, the closer we should get to whatever the client has hidden.”

There’s a beat, silence broken only by the slight hitch of unnecessary breaths, likely from both of them.

“Sounds aces.” The words are a touch softer than before, unfocused and breathed into the hand Charles still has over his face. “Just give me a second, yeah? Haven’t been hungover in bloody decades and I feel like I’ve been hit by…” He trails off, like the words are all of a sudden too much effort. “You know. Maybe that thing from ‘07?.”

“A Dullahan,” Edwin fills in, feeling decidedly unhelpful.

“Sure, yeah. Him.”

Now that we're back in the 60's, we have the classic Cap character arc of being sad and doing nothing because he has no social life and no hobbies, and because Nick Fury won't answer his mail. I wonder why they cut this out of the MCU? (Also the part of him living in another man's house is because he's staying in Tony Stark's mansion. I hope the shippers out there have fun with that ;) )

can't believe i'm still seeing anti-Charles/Edwin arguments in the form of "but there isn't enough representations of male friendship in media not everything has to be romantic (i.e., gay)." in what universe is there suddenly an influx of mainstream gay romances? Fanfic & Ao3 is not, in fact, a good indication of what is actually mainstream - fanfic specifically fills in the GAP left behind in mainstream - there is a reason a lot of popular ships are just, in fact, canonically male best friends (or female best friends).

it's fine not to be keen on Charles/Edwin but honestly I thought the whole "we need more male x male besties :(( otherwise we're gonna have a surplus of gay romances" was considered outdated last decade.
