There had been no other thought in his mind since hearing of the rumor. The men who talked about her couldn't give him a name or anything more than a description of her appearance, but it was enough for Cloud to up and leave Edge without warning.

Returning from the northern crater and seeing the lifestream surge up onto the surface made him think he, like the planet, could start anew, for her sake if nothing else. Yet he hadn't been able to keep that hope. Day by day, the yearning in his heart grew, weeds growing in the spaces of his heart where he hoped for flowers.

Now that long lost feeling of hope re-gripped him. It could just be a wild rumor, a coincidence, he didn't know, but he wouldn't rest until he knew.

It took several days for Cloud to arrive in Mideel. The little village was still recovering after being attacked by Ultimate Weapon, but they were thriving. Homes and stores had popped up from the shambles and what had started as a few survivors was now a small village. He hoped she was among them.

Cloud had barely slept on his way here but he pushed forward, eyes scanning the threadbare crowd with hope. She would stand out among them, he could almost see her now, just as she had been when they met in Sector 8.

it was the sound of her voice he heard first, and for a moment he wondered if he was hallucinating. But the he turned and he saw her, as alive and smiling as she had been before he found her on the altar. Before...

Cloud stared openly, rooted to the spot and his breath caught in his throat. He wasn't...hallucinating, right? If he was...he hoped it continued...

The afternoon is waning when Jessie bursts into the bar where she expects she'll find Cloud, maybe sitting in a stool or maybe downstairs in the hideout. Thankfully, he's at the bar with a drink resting on the counter top between his hands, so she doesn't have to look hard. And he has some empty space beside him! "Cloud!" she says happily, bringing a platter over and setting it down next to him. "A specialty pizza made by yours truly! All the freshest ingredients, some not legally obtained but I will kick you if you turn me in, and out of the oven only five minutes ago! Happy birthday!" She grins, beaming at him from where she stands at his side.

Even when he was a kid, there was never much fanfare about his birthday outside of what his mother planned. He had done a good job early on of alienating himself from the only other kids his age in the village. Kids didn't attend a troublemaker's party.

The 'tradition', so to speak, carried over into his adult years. He never celebrated it at Shinra, and the only person who even knew of it now would be Tifa.

So he had a good idea of how Jessie knew it.

His expression remained unchanged as he looked over the pizza and then at her before looking away and speaking in a flat tone. "You didn't have to."

Cloud finished his drink, and then asked. "What'd you use?"

Understanding feelings was difficult for him, whether it be his own or someone else's. He was glad that Aerith spelled it out so clearly that even a guy like him couldn't miss the point.

Cloud relaxed, if only a little, and shook his head. "I'm sure she's enjoying this place, but...I want to be here with you." He felt he had to say it again. Why would she be concerned about Tifa? She was just a friend.

Just as Aerith had comforted him, Cloud wanted to show her the same. There was no denying how he felt around her, and that she was here...it meant she had to feel somewhat the same, right? Yet he stood still for a moment, staring at her hand that she'd let fall to her side. He knew what he wanted to do, but getting the courage to do it was a different matter.

Finally he stepped up beside her, eyes averted, and bumped his hand into hers before reaching around and taking it. He couldn't find his voice to say anything, it had disappeared somewhere in his throat, but it wasn't like he could think of anything to say anyway. His nerves had taken over entirely.

In turning back to face Cloud, she catches the expression on his face. He. . . honestly hadn't meant any offense by giving the flower away, had he? He looked....embarrassed? Confused? She wasn't quite sure how to pin the emotion on him, but maybe she had been a tad harsh in her reply. For once instead of thinking it through, she had replied so quickly in the moment. Heated or not, she hadn't meant to also inflict any harm to him.

"Me?" Aerith didn't need to clarify if he meant just her, his follow-up question was confirmation. Instead, she softens. No poking and prodding at him when he was opening up. If he was being vulnerable, then she could be as well.

"I want to spend time with you too, Cloud...so no, it isn't bad" Aerith is soft in her reply, "I just...was worried because I thought you wanted her here instead of me" And truly she had no ill will towards Tifa. She just couldn't help how her heart reacted. She was just a girl who had feelings for a boy.

Cloud was shy, even with his cool guy persona. He...didn't act like Zack nearly at all. He was different, in nearly all aspects. Aerith swayed on her feet, debating on wrapping her arm around his again. She didn't want the night to be over or ruined. Instead, she casually let her hand fall to her side. The chocobo was in his stall.

Your writing of Zack and Cloud's date ideas was sooooo cute! Do you think they'd get jealous of you talking to other guys, assuming they had a crush on you?

Thank you so much!! I actually love comparing these two because I feel like their personalities really are so opposite. If they had crushes on you and saw you being friendly with other guys they'd 100% get jealous.

Cloud would probably be really pouty about it but try to pretend nothing is wrong. It would be written all over his face that he's bothered by it, but the second you ask him what's wrong, he'll say it's nothing and try to do something to distract himself. He'll stay relatively quiet about it, but inside, it's all he can think about. Eventually he'll shyly murmur it out, that he wishes you'd talk to him as much as the other guys. Eventually Cloud would have no choice but to admit that he likes spending time with you, trying to convey his message without entirely confessing to you just yet. But the second you catch on and start to probe him, he'll say "never mind" becoming too bashful, walking away so you don't see him blushing.

Zack would make it SO obvious that he's jealous, and pretty outwardly. He'll try to make a joke of it, saying that you must really like those other guys to be talking to them so much. And have a "what's so great about them when you've got me!" approach to talking about it. He'll go out of his way to make sure you're always seeing him do stuff like working out or fighting in the combat simulator, cracking jokes with others as you walk by to show he can be funny... showing off, basically. But Zack will be real with you at the end of it all and would probably end up confessing to some extent because he wants you to know he really likes you and wants to spend more time with you. And then joke again about how the other guys there aren't that great, anyway.

Do people just not understand how pathetic Sephiroth's behaviour towards Cloud really is? Is it that hard for them to read characters and subtext?

Whatever the case may be, this anti-story misrepresentation of these two characters has festered long enough within the fandom and needs to die.

Cloud nodded, acknowledging the sentiment of what she said. It was often hard to put his thoughts into words, something tangible he could share with others, because the pain and troubles that followed him had no explanation. They simply were.

"Do you ever feel like...you're not yourself?" He asked the question with his gaze skyward, like the heavens might have an answer he didn't. He wasn't sure what kind of response he expected from Byleth, but he didn't know anyone else he could ask.

"I didn't doubt it. Not with your new job." Cloud nodded. "I'll see you after then. Come find me when you're done."

He half turned to go, and then looked back at her. "Stay sharp." Then left. Since he had his job, there was no more point to the conversation.

Going solo, the job was tough, but nothing he couldn't take care of. Whatever Byleth was handling had produced a few stragglers, run offs from whatever she was dealing with perhaps? He'd ask later.

Later turned out to be several hours from now, when the hostiles had long since been slain and Cloud had taken up a guard position. Trickles of rumors were coming down from the monastery, something had happened to two of the students, but it seemed things were fine. Despite that, Cloud wasn't going to move until he heard news from Byleth herself.

Speaking of the ashen demon... Cloud straightened and watched her approach. "All clear here," he reported.

A worthy cause. The reasons didn’t matter to the mercenary, he’d offer his blade to just about anything, but it’d be nice to do something good for a change. Cloud nodded. “Where do you want me?” 

Also, it meant something to work toward. Something to keep his thoughts away from whatever his past wanted him to remember. 

Byleth knew his skill from their time working together, so he didn’t see the point in explaining what he could do. Cloud was a terror on the field once he got close to his enemies, his broad blade cleaving seismic strokes into his foes and the ground alike. The style of his blade also let him utilize it in other ways, and even demanded that he think before he act. It wasn’t easy to re-direct his swings once he made them.

       “I can handle finding the girl … Flayn,”  Byleth said.  “My students know her,  and they’re invested in bringing her back safely.  But that means I can’t protect the village at the same time.  I wouldn’t normally task a single person to this,  but…”  With the knights mostly distracted searching for Flayn,  her options were limited.  “I have confidence in you,  Cloud.”

She didn’t know exactly what sort of masked assailant he’d be going up against,  but better a trained swordsman whose skill she could vouch for than a handful of unarmed villagers.   “I will,  of course,  pay your fee in full.”  They were both mercenaries  –  she knew how this worked.  Friends or not,  he still needed money to survive.

OPEN RP | Muse: Sephiroth

Darkness was all around him, and he almost wasn't certain if he managed to sleep or not. This could very well still be a dream, and that would be a rare thing for him to have in these times. Cold metal was around his wrists, ankles, and neck. There was the sound of chains clanking against surfaces, and he could feel the frigid tiles beneath his feet. His body, which usually was so unnaturally warm, was quite cold... as the temperature in this place must've been put that way on purpose. All for him.

This discomfort was ongoing, and he noticed that his wing was the part which was the most uncomfortable, for it was bound so tightly to his shoulder. With his arms forced up above his head, all this did was perpetuate the sensation, and seemed like he was due for more uneasiness. Not that it bothered him really all that much. He was made of stronger stuff, and have dealt with more than this in the past.

Sephiroth glanced ahead, trying to peer into the dark, and he heard a sound approaching from what must be a door somewhere in the dark. Even with his sharp eyes, crisp and glowing in this lack of any source of light, he was not seeing much of anything in this place. Was it a dungeon, or simply just an elaborate holding cell, tailored specifically for him? He couldn't tell. It didn't matter, though, of course. He would find a way to free himself, and had all the patience in the world for it.

"I wouldn't mind if you did," he replied. If it helped her feel better, there was little Cloud wouldn't do. Seeing her happy made him feel lighter somehow.

As much as he didn't like to be thought of as a hero, Aerith never made him feel like he had impossible expectations to live up to. He was fine as he was, nervousness and all. There were times it felt like she was bogged down by her feelings, unpleasant thoughts and memories, and that was something Cloud could relate to on an intrinsic level.

He thought of her on the beach back in Costa del Sol, worried about her ugly thoughts, but he could only see her light.

Cloud's gaze remained fixed downward but he furtively glanced in her direction as he spoke. "Maybe we understand each other better than we realize."

There is something so achingly sweet about Cloud's admission. He was thinking of her. He cared. It gives her butterflies, but there is something deep in her head telling her she should keep her distance. Why did she want to keep her distance from Cloud? Everything about him pulled her in. Something she couldn't quite place.

"...That's so kind of you" She hums, her gaze settling down into her lap. She spent so much time alone, even when she was desperate for company she didn't want to impose. "You always know just when I need you" A half smile, "How do you do it?" She wasn't expecting an answer, not really. But in the same way she knew when to grab his hand whenever he had that look in his eyes, he somehow knew when she was bluffing. 'I'll be okay....I want to be alone' All things he had somehow seen past.

"I might come to depend on you if you keep it up"

assigning candy to asgzc + plus what i think their faves would be

angeal: i want to say kitkat, i cant quite explain why but its the first candy that came to mind… maybe i’m subconsciously thinking about the kitkat slogan, which makes me think of him because damn… poor guy really needs a break… + i’m somewhere between headcanoning him as someone who unexpectedly absolutely loves candy or someone thats not actually all too fond of candy/sweets in general, but he absolutely feels like a granny candy kind of guy! like he always had THOSE strawberry hard candies on him at all times, which makes me think his favorite would be some kind of hard candy, or some kind of cheap chocolate like a hersheys bar or something, that he doesn’t like for the flavor, but because it was the primary candy he got as a kid whenever he could afford it

sephiroth: hes literally a sour patch kid… he looks so intimidating and mean but (pre insanity at least) he’s actually just an awkward sweetheart! post insanity though is like toxic waste or something (like the sour candy, thats an actual candy i swear) because it just hurts a lot and to most people is not enjoyable at all + i dont think he eats much candy, nor did he eat much of it growing up, i think he mostly only ate what he was given by others, like hard candies, because people are more likely to carry those around as opposed to like a chocolate bar or something, and i feel like it’s probably stuck with him, so by process of elimination, they would be his favorite but he isnt really opposed to any candy, he just doesn’t really eat it in general and he probably prefers other sweets, like baked things

genesis: hes fireball/any of those cinnamon “spicy” candies… they’re red… and genesis seems to really like committing acts of arson with fira materia… and they fit perfectly dont ask its hard to explain! also skittles, which i feel is self explanatory… + he likes lollipops, not because he truly loves them, but because he loves purposefully sucking on them in a provocative manner when angeal and sephiroth are around to get any kind of reaction out of them! his actual favorite would probably be like… turtles or ferrero rochers or something of that really expensive, fancy chocolate nature (do not correct me on the fancy or unfancyness of those chocolates! i’m poor, they’re fancy to me!)

zack: … pixie sticks… all the way… just a fucking tube full of sugar… + he doesn’t have a favorite because he likes literally all of it, put any candy in front of him and it will be gone in a second and he will love whatever it was that you put in front of him! the only exception is that he hates chocolate, and i think i have that in my head because of the whole puppy zack thing, but regardless he loves all other kinds of candy, and he absolutely bounces off the walls for the rest of the day, after eating every candy he can get his hands on

cloud: he feels like gummy bears, especially the mini ones… cute, small and squishy… and pretty basic like they aren’t like remarkable, just kinda there but generally liked and appreciated without any strong haters, and i don’t think i can think of a single person, in canon, that ever actually hated cloud (dont quote me on that, i could be wrong) + his favorite would probably be some kind of obscure small town local candy, which only like a few people have ever had or heard of, and he thinks no other candy can match or live up to it… otherwise, he probably likes most chocolate/candy bars in general, and hes not really picky about it, but hes also not primarily fond of most other candies that aren’t chocolate
