Sception Reads Cass Cain #28
Tumblr media
Batgirl (2000) #12 writer: Chuck Dixon pencils: Dale Eaglesham
Batgirl (2000) takes a break from the usual creative team for a tie in to the Batman Crossover of the month, Officer Down. We've seen Eaglesham draw Cass a few times now & he's always solid. Dixon wrote for Cass back in Robin 73, which wasn't the best showing for her. Better this time, if more reliant on narration blocks than I'd like. Kind of odd that this is a 'tie in' rather than part of the story proper. Like they didn't want people to feel they had to buy this issue? I'd say it was a slight against Cass, except it's not like she was kept out of the rest of the crossover, she's in like half the issues.
But the fact that this issue is partially segregated from the rest of the crossover is convenient for me anyway, as it gives me an excuse to just look at this issue on its own this week, while next week we can bundle together the rest of Cass's appearances in the cross over.
Tumblr media
Off the top, I have to say I really like the art in this issue. Eaglesham's fast cementing his place as my second favorite Cass artist. And not just because I like the way he draws Cass as Batgirl, but just, I mean, look at this page here, with all the details and personality packed into the scene. Kudos also to Jason Wright, the colorist for this issue, for really capturing this warm cozy homely interior, almost nostalgia-sepia-toned, while everything outside is cold and wet and blue. A single page that really captures Cassandra's isolation. At this point in her story she's basically living as Batgirl 24/7. No alter ego, no normal life, no friends. Not even really any connections apart from her somewhat fraught relationship with Barbara and her extra fraught relationship with Bruce. To see Cass on the outside looking in at the sort of connections that seem so impossibly distant, especially after the run in with her father last issue, it really works.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I also love these panels of Cass navigating Gotham, moving around like a shadow, often in the background or in silhouette. Bits like that convey the spookiness of this Batgirl a lot more than other artists who give her an angry face or emphasize the stitching on her mask or the like.
Tumblr media
Love that panel of her rubbing her chin, thinky face clearly visible through the mask. Batman's out, so Cass decides to start investigating on her own. It's nice to see her doing the detective part of the bat-person vigilante job, rather than just leaving that part to Barbara, and Dixon does a good job of walking the reader through her thought process.
He is relying on narration blocks a bit more than I'd like, but he keeps them short and terse. Cass can talk now, but English is still a second language, and that comes across pretty well, imo. I was very critical of Dixons last showing with Cass, but he's honestly doing a solid job with her here, and as much as I don't care for them in general, I think the thought bubbles are helping. Some writers just have a hard time wrapping their heads around a non-verbal character. I'd imagine even just a little bit of language makes thing a world easier.
That said, not to beat a dead horse here, but with Cass speaking a few words here and there like this, they could have believably gotten her to this point through her own effort by studying with Barbara, no psychics required. Just saying.
Tumblr media
I guess it hadn't really been decided how much Cass's new speaking ability had translated to reading yet? It seems from these panels that she can read at least a little, at least enough to recognize names and dates as such, which is more than she can do later on. But clearly she's not comfortable or adept enough at reading to get much out of the police files beyond Catwoman maybe being involved, and you can feel her frustration here when she abandons the papers to finally just go ask Babs for help.
Good stuff.
Tumblr media
Of course, Babs isn't home either.
Again, I really like the way Eaglesham draws Cass. I like it more each time he shows up in this retrospective. Love little head tilt in the first panel, love the cape in the second panel there, very dracula-esque. Love that we can kind of see her face through the mask, makes her feel like a person.
Tumblr media
Oh, you poor random doofus goons.
Tumblr media
There's an ok fight scene at one of Selina's safehouse, albeit against no-name mooks. The panels are well drawn, the fight's perfectly readable, but it still feels pretty arbitrary, like hitting a minimum action quota for the issue.
Regardless, Selina isn't there, and the issue ends with Cass abandoning her solo efforts to go find the others.
As an event tie in the overall issue feels... pretty unnecessary. Nothing is really discovered, the story isn't advanced at all, nothing much happens. Makes sense that it wasn't an official part of the crossover, though you're left kind of wondering what the point was at all.
Even so, I kind of like the issue regardless. Eaglesham does a spectacular job with the art all the way through, and Dixon seems to have a much firmer handle on the character this time around. We get some solid panels of Cass trying to do some detective work on her own, something we rarely see, and the excellent bit early on of her flittering around through the city like a shadow. That sense of isolation from the first page really permeates the entire issue even if if the plot never touches on it, with Cass seeking out the only two people she really knows only for both of them to be out.
So yeah, even if nothing that happens in the issue really matters much, even if it doesn't really tell a stand alone story per se, I still like this one a lot.

I love it! I finished it within a few days and can't wait for Thursday when the new one comes out. Here are some of my favorite episodes:
Episode 42: just love how Bruce goes along with what the JLA comes up with bc he is too embarrased about the real reason he broke his ankle
Episodes 45 & 46: Love how the whole family helps Jason through the flashback. Also love the kiss on the head Bruce gives Jason in the end
Episode 77: Just hilarious and c h a o s.
Episodes 80 & 81: Nice bonding between Batman and Nightwing.
Episode 47: Love the parents talking about their children and Clark's face when they are found out.
Episode 34: Love how Bruce is stubborn enough to keep trying and the batfamily keeping watch
Episodes 72 & 73: Love seeing the competitive side of the batfam.
Am I the only person who actually enjoys the batfamily webtoon? I see many people who are saying that the webtoon is bad representation and too fanon. I just think the webtoon it's just the family acting domestic and talking to each one like if no one is trying to murder them.

Is it okay to ask for a short summary of the Ric Grayson arc? I want to read the comics but I don't really want to risk my temper and mental health. I just want to see which parts I can read without exploding.
Yeah, I feel that. It’s a bit of a frustrating read. Basically:
Dick is shot in the head, wakes up with amnesia due to drugs given to him by Dr. Haas.
Dr. Haas’ conditioning and manipulation, along with his family’s pushy behavior, make Dick hesitant about his family. Bruce showing Dick a video of him being shot in the head is the final nail in the coffin. Dick freaks out, and no longer wants anything to do with Nightwing or the family.
Dr. Haas suggests moving to Bludhaven. Dick does so, burning his old Nightwing hideout upon arrival.
Dick is homeless on the streets, and takes a job as a cab driver to get some cash. He often goes to Bea Bennett’s bar, and the two begin to form a relationship. Meanwhile, a cop finds Dick’s suits, and decides to form a squad of Nightwings.
Dick has violent, reoccurring nightmares, and goes to therapy sessions with the Scarecrow.
Dick helps the Nightwings beat Scarecrow, and reluctantly is let into the group.
Dick helps the Nightwings beat other crooks, including Duela Dent. As his relationship with Bea continues to develop, Dick tells her everything--about Robin, Nightwing, the amnesia, and his work with the Nightwings.
Eventually Cobb attacks, and Dick gets put into memory-altering googles that give him a new set of memories--life growing up as a Talon.
He is briefly a Talon, and is freed by a lucky hit to the googles.
Dick has debilitating migraines because of the two sets of memories, and goes to Dr. Haas for help, only to discover her connection to the Court. Dick tracks her down and retrieves a memory crystal--an important tool in controlling him.
The Joker gets the crystal, and implants Dick with a third set of memories, this one including his parents beating him and him becoming the Joker’s son.
Dick attacks Jason and then Barbara with Punchline’s help. Eventually, people are able to get the crystal away from the Joker, and Bea gives it to Dick so that he can free himself. He does so.
The family gives Dick a pat on the back, and the Nightwing suit.
Dick’s really been through the wringer. I wonder when the last time he’s eaten or slept is...on top of all the brainwashing that’s messing with his head, how is he even functioning. Give this boy a granola bar, aspirin, and a nap please DC.
If you want a more thorough breakdown, or to pick and choose comics to read, I figured it might be easier if I summarized by issue? Under the readmore.
Batman #55: Dick is shot in the head. The bullet makes a pfffft sound effect for whatever reason. The suffering begins.
Warning!! Get ready to be told over and over again in Dick’s internal narration that: a) Dick has amnesia b) he does NOT go by DICK c) he definitely doesn’t want to be Nightwing or be part of his family and d) he is a sad hobo man now. Onward.
Nightwing Annual #1: Dick talks to his doctor about how his recovery is going. In flashbacks, we are shown the aftermath of the shooting and Dick’s recovery in the hospital. There is a particularly stirring scene with Damian in Dick’s hospital room...but from there the family’s handling of the situation is poor. This is the issue where the family shows Dick the video of him getting his brains blown out to jog his memory. Dick freaks out, and leaves the manor in a panic, determined to have nothing more to do with his family or Nightwing.
Nightwing #50: Flashbacks to Dick’s time as Robin, fighting the Scarecrow. In the present, Dick tries to acclimate to his new life. We are given details of Dick’s condition, including his blackouts and his homeless status. Barbara tries to talk Ric into returning to the manor, and he refuses. The family concludes that there is nothing they can do. Dick burns down his Nightwing hideout.
Nightwing #51: A touching scene with Alfred, checking on Dick. A cop stumbles upon the burned Nightwing suits, and decides to become Nightwing himself. Dick continues to try and sort himself out. He is almost mugged, and accidentally breaks out some Nightwing moves, seriously injuring the mugger.
Nightwing #52-55: A group of cops decides to become Nightwing. Scarecrow continues to cause havoc in Bludhaven. Once again, Dick’s doctor is a supervillain--he goes to a therapy sessions with the Scarecrow. Bea and Dick’s relationship begins to take off; they are actually fairly sweet and have a fun dynamic, definitely a bright spot in these comics (that you’ll want to hold onto).
Nightwing #56: A bit of a turning point. Dick sees one of the Nightwing squad get hurt, and feels the need to step in--he doesn’t want anyone dying in his place. He helps the group beat Scarecrow.
Nightwing #57: Duela Dent comes to town. Barbara talks with Bea. The Nightwing’s give Dick permission to work with them, ironically :/ Dick helps them take down Duela Dent. Barbara meets up with Dick and apologizes to him for some of her behavior, then leaves.
Nightwing #58-61: The Nightwings “train” Dick (lol). They continue to question whether he is capable and can be trusted, oscillating between “wow he’s impressive!” to “I don’t know if the newbie’s ready for this” to “you’re no Nightwing.” Backstory time for the Nightwings, Dick’s relationship with Bea continues to grow (she gets him a phone, which he didn’t have before RIP) and the gang fights a living fire.
Nightwing #62-63: Dick continues to help the Nightwings. He lets Bea in on everything--the fact that he was Robin and Nightwing, that he was shot in the head and lost his memory, and that he is going out into the city to help the Nightwings when needed. She doesn’t like how he puts himself at risk, but supports him, saying that he can’t help but be a good person. The Court of Owls begins to close in, attacking one of the Nightwings.
Nightwing #64-67: Cobb attacks Bea, leading to a fight between Dick and Talon. Talon overpowers Dick, and forces him to wear memory-altering googles that implant a second life in his head--a life as a Talon. He briefly becomes a Talon, attacks the Nightwings, and is freed due to a lucky hit to the googles.
Nightwing #68: Cool Travis Moore art at the beginning of this one, detailing some of Dick’s true memories. Satisfying to see Dick beat Cobb up a little, and tell him that no one can define him but him. And despite all the crazy crap that just went down, Bea reaffirms that she’s willing to stick it out.
Nightwing #69-71: Memories of his two lives war in Dick’s head, causing debilitating headaches. Bea and Dick discover Dr. Haas is responsible for Dick’s memory loss, and Dick tracks her down. He manages to take a memory crystal from Haas--a key tool in controlling him--but it falls into the Joker’s hands shortly after. Joker uses it to implant new memories--memories of Dick by the Joker’s side as his son.
Red Hood and the Outlaws #48: A masked Dick Grayson attacks Jason. With Punchline’s help, Jason is knocked out.
Nightwing #72-73: Bea calls Barbara for help. Barbara tracks Dick down, only to be defeated by him and Punchline. Barbara wonders how Dick could do this to her (because he’s been brainwashed Barb) and is forced to fight Dick in a cage match. Dick’s internal narration has devolved into nonsensical sentence fragments :( He remembers his parents beating him, which is a heartbreaking thought. In the end, Barbara runs away to save a hospital. Dick runs into Jason and Tim.
Nightwing #74: Dick fights Jason and Tim. Barbara arrives and attacks the Joker, causing him to drop the crystal. Bea (ran from Bludhaven to try to help Dick) gives the crystal to Dick so that he can free himself. He does so. Batman arrives to say that “he’s ours again” and acts like Dick hadn’t just spent the last several comics being treated as an object to be passed around. The family barely reacts to Dick’s return. Bea runs back to Bludhaven, thinking that Ric no longer needs her. Overall, underwhelming and frustrating stuff here.
Batman #99: Batman hands Dick a Nightwing costume. Back to work.

Like seriously, some people will go to such fucking legths to lie.
An unnamed infant at the end of Son of the Demon is not some sort of “proof” Damian predates Cass. When that infant was put on page there were no grand plans or concept of a character named Damian Wayne showing up with a sword to Batman’s throat saying he expected his father to be taller. The idea of artificially aged boy trained to be an heir to Ras Al’Ghul’s League of Assassins wasn’t on anyone’;s mind when making Son of the Demon. It was merely a sequel hook, a tease of potential continuation. That was an idea that maybe Grant Morrison got after reading that book at earliest.
but even if we accept that infant as Damian’s “first” appearance, then I do not see how in good faith could anyone consider him a part of the Batfamily when he was being hidden from Batman by his mother and grandfather? By the time he joined the Batfam Cass already had a 73 issues series under her belt. Even if he existed in Universe earlier, she was part of the Batfam before him.
But you know what? I’m glad you made this statement. because it proves few things. First one being how double-faced Damian stans are. Through last few days I have been constantly told Cass fans (and I include myself in this group) are lashing out at Damian for no reason and we should “unify” against DC and that it is the only way we can get Cass proper respect. Nevermind we have heard this from various groups within the Batfam for the last 15 years. Nevermind every time whenever we go side with those fans we’re always left in the dirt the moment they get what they want. Nevermind it makes me feel like Cass fandom is treated like, as we would call it in my country, a bald mare for everyone to ride but never feed. But I love how then people like you come in and prove Damian stans cannot even hide their contempt for Cass. Over last few days in response to my criticism of Gotham Screwjob I have been told by Damian fanatics the following lies:
that Cass isn’t Asian because her father is white (somehow this doesn’t seem to apply to Damian whose father is also white, go figure)
that Shiva isn’t Asian and was never intended to be Asian
that Cass isn’t disabled
And now that Damian “predates” Cass so obvious she is stealing from him, not the other way around!
So thank you so much for shoving me, once again, that Damian fans are willing to stop Cass in the dirt and deny and erase everything about her that makes them feel she might threaten Damian’s position! And the fact you try to pretend 2006 came before 1999 only proves you KNOW they have enought similiar elements to invite comparisons. You know they have enough similiar elements to make people feel one is redundant or unoriginal and pass them on in favor of the other. You know this is why it’s such a bad look for Damian to take Cass title and a story her fans have been begging DC to give her for the last 15 fucking years. You know Cass fans have a point that it will now make it impossible to give her this story without inviting unfavorable comparisons, which means something that was a safety net for a lot of her fandom was torn to shreds to push Damian! This is why you’re suddenly desperate todo a fucking historical revisionism and claim Damian was there first! You need to convince yourselves she really is devirerate, a ripoff, of him because you fear it may lessen him othertwise. And in doing so you have proven every Cass fan who already felt Damian is stealing from her right!
And the best part is I don’t actually hate Damian. Fuck I do like him a bit. My dislike was for DC handing him over a story that was always tailor-made for Cass and how it means now she will not be able to get it herself. My rage is already directed entierly at DC. I have stated that if Dick, Jason, Babsgirl or even Tim were ones to get this story I would be equally as pissed. Damian doesn’t matter here, what matters is DC taking something Cass’ fandom loudly begged them to give her for the last 15 years and deciding they’re going to give it to one of characters marketing department approved of because they’re too much of cowards to take a single risk with someone they themselves pushed to fucking C list. But I’m not gonna lie, the toxic behavior of Damian stans have done more than DC since his creation to make me lose sympathy for him. I don’t hate him but I know my enjoyment of his stories has visibly soured after seeing what kind of fandom he invites.

batman #73
[ID: a goon telling the Renter, a crook who has been selling custom guns underground to other criminals, “We've trapped Batman! What do we do now, Renter?” The fiend responds, “I'll handle this personally! Since no one has ever rented this gun, I've decided to use it myself... ‘On the house,’ you might say! Ha, ha!” He takes the high-powered rifle that was already customed made for the execution of Batman. It's price was selling for $10,000, which is worth roughly $114,000 as of 2023. After defeating The Renter and many of his henchmen, Batman and Robin return to the famed trophy room back in the Batcave — where Batman is showcasing the gun that was specially designed for his death! Robin comments, “Hagen sure placed a high rental value on that gun!” Batman responds, “Yes, Robin... But Commissioner Gordon thought I ought to rent it permanently, free of charge!” END ID]

Batman: No Man’s Land is what made me a Batman fan - and it is equally what made me abandon the “Big Two” comic companies some years later as everything I liked was erased from continuity, Cassie Cain was treated like dog shit, the “Bat Family” became an all-boys club and so on. Given that DC has rebooted everything at least twice I feel my disdain is warranted - you can go on all you like about how Batman is ‘an eternal story’ but I firmly believe that  the kind of storytelling I want from Batman cannot survive contact with constant reboots and disregarded continuity. I could live in a world where twenty years from now Batman is retired and his predecessors are living out his ideals in their own way - comics keeps doing this but never lets it stick, the commitment to some platonic ideal of brand identity never letting anything move on. All the stories I’ve loved over the last few decades have largely been serialized ones - I can enjoy non-seralized work, even love it: a good Calvin and Hobbes strip is always timeless. But C&H and DC comics are trying to do very different things - Calvin can stay young forever, I don’t think I really want that from Batman. Every few years my favourite characters all become strangers, or cease to exist, and I’m supposed to just keep reading? Sorry, DC - investing in an ephemeral story subject to the whims of editors hunting more sales and restarting everything because that’ll let “new readers get on board.” Given the ever-falling drop of DC and Marvel comics sales, coupled with the endless hard and soft reboots, I don’t actually think that’s true. i think jumping on to a story with years of depth behind it is wonderful. When Is tarted reading MTMTE I wasn’t put-off that it was the latest entry in a long line of them: I went back and read the entire decade-long run of IDW Transformers comics. And some of it was shit, yeah - but some of it was great, and when i returned to the new stuff all that weight of past actions and people meant something. It gives worlds substance, even if you’ve not read that exact issue being referenced - you know that others have come this way before. All of this is a very long intro to this: I am re-reading all of NML to see if it still holds up - writing, story, all that jazz. And... uh... Oh Jeeze. I forgot about this. This is my old nemesis: Mark Buckingham.
Mark Buckingham has had a very storied career. He’s a decent inker, fine as a colourist blah blah blah - but he... woof. he’s a dreadful penciler. And he’s won lots of awards and renown and I’ve never understood why - because his faces do this thing and it’s the worst. Mark Buckingham first came to my attention when he took over as penciler on issues 6 of Fables. He replaced Lan Medina who did the first five issues and had this wonderful, kind of old-fashioned romance comics style I love, especially his rendering of Snow White:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Fables #01) Medina left after issue five - no idea why . - eventually snagging an Eisner for it but not, as far as I can tell, much name recognition beyond that, one of those jobbing artists who pencils in relative obscurity, occasional attached to something big but never bestowing much on him. Or maybe he’s huge among those “in the know” -  time on Google came up with a lot of stub articles and the like. Anyways, from issue 6 Mark Buckingham takes over and goes on the pencil the vast majority of the next 145 issues... This is a tragedy, because when Lan Medina drew Bigby Wolf his face... well...it didn’t melt.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
These are all from Fables #07, which is the first issue i really started to notice this problem. Most of Buckingham’s work is unobjectionable, but he keeps having these bizarre faces almost always involving Bigby.
Tumblr media
Fables 13
Tumblr media
Fables 14 Hell let’s jump ahead to:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Fables #50 Fables #50, by the way, is the point at which I really started to question “why the fuck am I still reading this?” It’s the issue where after a big long masturbatory commando raid the Big Bad Wolf turns to the camera and tells Gepetto - but really the audience - the author's opinions on Israel.
Tumblr media
It’s as jarring and out-of-place as it looks. If you’re wondering”‘Should I read Fables” the answer depends entirely on how much you enjoy something that isn’t so right-wing that it openly endorses fascism, but just right wing enough to surprise you now and again with something that leaves a nasty taste in your mouth. Fables always feels what would have happened if Frank Miller and Neil Gaiman had been merged into a single being and made an imaginative but reactionary comic book. But all that lay in the future. In 1998 Mark was working of Shadow of the Bat, one of the numerous Batman spin-off that all came together to make Batman: No Man’s Land, including Batman: Shadow of the Bat, Batman: Legends of the Dark Knight, Detective Comics, Azrael: Agent of the Bat (which is shit), Catwoman, Robin, Batman Chronicles, Nightwing, Catwoman, a couple of one-shots like Batman: Huntress & Spoiler, crossovers with Young Justice and JLA, and last but not least, a comic called Batman. (I can’t stress how bad Azrael: Agent of the Bat is. When people make fun of angsty, over-wrought 90s comics, they’re talking at least in part about Azrael. Apparently he made it over to the new Prime universe. No idea why.) And boy - if you thought Fables had a melting problem, let’s look at Shadows of the Bat! (These are are all from #73)
Tumblr media
It’s something to do with the mouth - his habit of erasing the middle of it just makes men look like Jim Halpert crossed with Guy Smiley and I hate it.

Oh Jesus, Oracle - eat something, for the love of God, you’re emaciated!

Blargle blargle blargle
Tumblr media
This isn’t an example of bad art. I just wanted to note that Anarky is here. Who is that, you ask? He’s a third-rate V rip off who exists because it was the 90s. You don’t care about Anarky. Nobody has ever cared about Anarky. He was supposed to be the third Robin and got dumped - that’s how much nobody cares about Anarky.

I think if I could somehow mail a single TPB to every Batman fan on the planet for them to really read it would be the Death in the Family/Lonely Place of Dying trade paperback collection.
Like, I’m not saying that these stories are The Best Batman Stories Ever Told, or even that they’re particularly good. (I personally think LPoD is a great story, but that’s neither here nor there.) I do think, however, that these two stories are foundational to SO much of the modern Batman mythos as we know it (or interpret it, as it may be) and people are at a disservice by not understanding
a) That Bruce loved Jason and that Jason’s death was an unquestionable, morally indefensible tragedy
b) That Bruce went Totally Bonkers immediately afterwards, to the point of Superman having to get involved
b.2) That Batman and Superman are more than just co-workers, and that they’re actually friends
b.3) That Superman and Batman still have to exist within larger systems (though this point and everyone’s personal take on the whole U.N. situation varies, because sometimes comics sure make bad choices)
c) That Bruce was devastated by Jason’s death, and went into a death spiral of his own
d) That his friends--namely Alfred--did in fact see this happening and were summarily rejected by Gruff Bruce
d.2) I wish that, in this fantasy world, I could also mail The Caped Crusader Vol. 1 so that people could contextualize what Bruce was like immediately before and immediately after Jason’s death, and how people like Gordon reacted to this obvious and immediate change.
e) That people could see the actual origin of Tim Drake. Like, really, what he actually did rather than all the misconstruction and fanon telephone that is natural, but not entirely correct. This would then hopefully have the consequence of informing everyone’s understanding of Tim’s place as Robin--yes he’s a little crazy. A little intense. A little over-eager and afraid at the same time. But very importantly a character defined by connective tissue.
f) That Dick and Alfred have very interesting roles in those two stories. I mentioned Alfred already in DotF, but in LPoD those two are also cruising on the crazy train (both the normal vigilante one and the dead-Jason express) and picking up speed.
f.2) There’s a lot of Dick character work that happens here in short order--his circus roots, his relationship with the Titans, and then the beginning of his relationship with Tim as brothers. But it also establishes the way that Dick cannot become Robin again, that he can’t regress--Nightwing is who he’s supposed to be. Not being Nightwing, the identity he created for himself, is a disservice. This will color his time at Batman, and dovetails neatly into his held truth that he cannot save Bruce from Bruce.
f.3) Alfred is an interesting case study here in how quickly he jumps onboard with Tim, considering how opposed he is to Bruce’s self destruction in the endless war on crime... unless he views Tim and the dangers of Robin as an appropriate stopgap to hold Bruce from absolute destruction. That sure is a lot of burden to be put on one teen, however, so there’s another interesting wrinkle.
g) That this trauma never goes away. Even once Jason comes back in Under the Red Hood, the pain of losing him is still something that all of the aforementioned people still deal with because the death of a child is something you never fully get over. And it’s not like Batman didn’t try to do anything--he was fully ready to kill Joker. He was ready in the U.N. building and then left him for dead on a crashing helicopter. That’s part of what makes Jason’s return in UTRH so tragic, but the potency of that tragedy (you didn’t avenge me, Bruce) is amplified.
Anyway, this got to be much longer and much closer to a rant than I anticipated, but this thought has been rattling around in my head since I saw one too many things that made me think “this person has not actually read A Death in the Family,” so this is my soapbox.

I don’t have many headcanons, but I do think that Alfred smoked when he was in the military. He quit when he went to work for the Waynes for a variety of reasons, namely the danger of second hand smoke to a small child and the hypocrisy of smoking while being employed by a doctor. Years later, he swore he was having his final cigarette outside the police station while an eight year old Bruce gave the detective his statement. He broke that promise when he chainsmoked an entire pack waiting for Bruce to fly Jason’s body back from Ethiopia.

My #1 post of 2022
So I just got the notification about Spotify now having audiobooks, and not to have a knee jerk reaction and shoot from the hip, but don’t give Spotify your money. Download Libby and use it if you have a library card. If you don’t have a library card, as a librarian I feel inclined to tell you to go to your local library and get one! They are almost always the low price of free. Libby is also the low price of free. Don’t keep throwing money in the Spotify pit.
If you’re a person aged 13-21, I also just want to plug the Brooklyn Library’s Books Unbanned project where you can get a free eCard, because it’s such a cool program. Anyway. I’ve typed all this in like five minutes and am going to get a snack. Don’t keep giving Spotify your money when you can support your local institutions who will get you this stuff for free
