sorry but im still just thinking about how batman 105 (aka the comic where bruce gets his tits out and asks khoa to stay) begins with them having a sloppy breakup in the rain and khoa offering bruce to travel and save the world together, they'll live lavishly and gather resources. and then MAYBE they can tackle gotham together. hes trying to convince bruce to stay and that hes going to get himself killed because of his stupid bleeding heart and how he blames himself for every loss. that together they can conquer so much more. and bruce responds by calling him broken and telling him he's angry that bruce is always going to care about the people he saves. he's still determined to go, still choosing gotham over his best (and only) friend.
but he tells him this as theyre in the rain and khoa is still trying to convince bruce to change his mind despite the plane being there and knowing that bruce wont. bruce is one of the only people thats seen his face and knows his name, the only person that truly knows him—yet all those years they spent together still isn't as important as that vow bruce took as a mourning 8 year old boy. so he demands for bruce to never say his name again—he doesn't get that right or the one to see his face ever again. and bruce still doesnt change his mind, leaving khoa behind without so much as a glance behind him.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
while batman annual 2021 is khoa bragging about his greatest feat—taking down madame midas, the woman who laughed as his mother was killed and as her father strong-armed his father's independent business. he doesn't tell bruce this but it still ends with bruce pointing out there has to be a reason he cared and spent so long on it. khoa denies it, of course, repeating back what he tells himself constantly. he doesnt care about anything (and, by extension, about anyone). but the comic literally just showed us, the reader, between those two pages that this isnt true! he had a personal motive, he recired back the words she told him all those years again! but after khoa says he doesnt care about anything is the first time on panel that bruce calls him khoa again (as far as i remember :p)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
but then khoa is suddenly changing the topic!! not allowing bruce to continue, not even acknowledging the name or all the years it nust have been between the last time someone called him that—the last time BRUCE called him that. and its only after the accusation of khoa caring like how he does—of khoa not being ‘broken’ like how he said the last time he attempted to use that name!! AND that this is their last chronical interaction (on panel) before khoa is the one leaving bruce behind to train bao...
Tumblr media
im sure bruce used it off panel before this (and it was probably during sloppy old man sex) but this being it on paper has been making me go >:3c!!!!

@thecatlounge asked: I just read that ask about Vlad that you did and was wondering if you had any thoughts about Jack and Maddie. They have clear love for there kids and when they know they are in danger they will drop everything for them, but they also don't notice when there is somthing wrong going on.  Valerie would be another good one, though I think that she mostly framed around how whe is manipulated by others (like Vlad).
(the Vlad ask)
So, I have quite a few thoughts on Maddie and Jack, and they’re probably some of the most complex.
I’ve talked about this before but one of the quirks/ bugs/ features of Danny Phantom’s tumultuous production and at-times-contradictory canon is that there can be multiple disparate readings that are all somewhat supported.  And no more is this true than for the (nominally) good Doctors Fenton.
Let’s talk about the meta-side first because it’s kind of fascinating.

Decided to update the original FFN-style ‘book cover’ art for my fanfic Young Justice: Deathly Weapons.
It’s fun to see how the visual identity of this fic has evolved from when I first came up with and posted the initial idea (right) to now (left) that it has a fully-detailed plan that’s developed a vibe of its own.
[Art pieces inside the background-portals can be seen here and here.  Teaser summary for upcoming “episodes” here.]

@kaiobeast asked: So, in YJDW, Danny is still very much a solo-hero type. I imagine that's going to potentially cause some issues down the road, both with learning how to work as an equal with other supers and bonding with them since his own hero development is so different from the Team's. No mentor, the discomfort that the nature of his powers can cause, the mixed history he DOES have that's public knowledge, and the lack of real exposure to the rest of the superhero sphere of influence.
(Young Justice: Deathly Weapons)
So this is interesting because you're completely right; those are things that should complicate Danny's interactions (and potential integration) with established heroes and hero teams.
However, the specifics of Danny's circumstances and road to joining the Team in Deathly Weapons kind of alleviate or sidestep a lot of those potential issues. At cost of giving him a new catalogue of complexes to deal with but beggars can't be choosers.

I don’t have many strong thoughts about Danny x Kaldur outside of it being a rarepair crossover crackship with the potential to be cute.
However,
Deeply Disappointed that the ship name isn’t Sleeping With the Fishes.

My #1 post of 2022
@kaiobeast asked: So, I've noticed that DP fans and authors have a sliding scale for Vlad. They vary from "haha look at poor little meow meow who fails at everything" to "Vlad is an absolute psycho and the Fenton parents are criminally negligent for allowing him near their kids". I'm very curious as to how you view Vlad and his relationship with Danny because that variance is so huge, and since it kind of slides between the two in canon as well.
Ah, Vlad.  Perpetual runner-up of Dracula lookalike contests, consistent bronze medallist in the race for most-culturally-relevant-Vladimir, and called by the internet everything from Psychopath to Meow Meow to I regretfully inform you Daddy.
One of the things that makes interpretations of Danny Phantom characters more fluid/variable than others is that (as you said) canon can be rather slide-y at times - something which lends itself to multiple quasi-canonical potential readings.  I think I’ve mentioned before that for me this means I have a bit of an annoying tendency to change my headcanons depending on what best facilitates a given story concept, rather than being wedded to One True Version™.
That said, Vlad is probably the major-character who I have the most consistent read on.

TREKMATCH! # 233 - TNG's "Inheritance" vs 2018's Scooby-Doo! And Batman: The Brave and the Bold
SCOOBY-DOO! AND BATMAN: THE BRAVE AND THE BOLD
Batman and Detective Chimp decide to initiate Scoob and the gang into a mystery solving club just in time for Batman and his new pals to be framed for grand theft chemical. It's a fun movie but that's more me gravitating toward the Scooby Doo parts since I'm pretty tired of Batman forty movies later. It's weird to me that Frank Weller, fifty years in, sounds the same as Fred but shows his age as Scooby, and also Matthew Lillard is Shaggy's voice now and does a pretty decent job (I never saw the live action movies so I don't know if he was good in those or not but it's a surprise to me nevertheless).
GRADE: B-
STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION - "Inheritance"
While the Enterprise is trying to reignite a planet's core (is that a thing?) Data meets a woman who claims to basically be his mom. He spends some time bonding with her and getting embarrassed by her stories of him as an adult-shaped child, but then (Spoiler) he finds out she is an android too. The only trouble is she doesn't know, so should he tell her and make her possibly sad?
GRADE: C-
Victory to Batman, but Trek is up 118-115!

Project Four (Matadork) Solve
http://pangenttechnologies.tumblr.com/post/166422468052/j4re8qh0s68
This post includes two animated GIFs of barcode-like shapes, split into five groups, an animated GIF of a section of text from the ‘shatter’ video with the letters and digits alternating between the frames, along with a link to a Signal and Noise YouTube video.
The video has hex title ‘project four’ and hex description 'username matadork’ shows a man, presumed to be Liam, with wires and electrodes attached to his head and body, in the manner of a sleep study.
The shots of the video have a distortion effect, and there are interesting morphing transitions between them. In the middle of the video, several scenes appear from some previous videos, most notably some text and an exploding cube from the at this time unsolved shatter video. There is also some Braille in the upper right corner occasionally, the one below spells 'matadork', I'm not sure if there are more.
Tumblr media
The text 20 seconds in is decimal for n3d97va026nhl4p http://www.mediafire.com/file/n3d97va026nhl4p/heroes%26villains.zip
This archive contains images of DC Comics Heroes and Villains Cards which  were obtained (?) from a coin pusher machine in a video arcade, and have been modified to include digits in the bottom of the card. It was found that these digits were two-character zero-padded representations of 01-39 with one Hero and one Villain card containing each number.
09 12 Green Lantern 02 10 34 Batman 02 18 38 Cheetah 01 07 12 22 Harley Quinn 03 17 28 37 Lex Luther 06 13 31 39 Hero Bonus 04 06 15 31 Vilain Bonus 04 15 19 28 33 Superman 11 16 20 24 35 Wonder Woman 10 21 23 25 36 Captain Cold 09 11 24 27 34 Darkseid 08 13 19 29 33 39 Joker 05 08 17 21 25 37 Flash 03 14 22 27 29 32 36 Cyborg 01 07 18 23 26 30 38 Aquaman 05 14 16 20 26 30 32 35 Penguin
Then, each card was assigned a number based on the order shown on the front of the arcade machine.
Order on machine: 1-Superman 2-Batman 3-Wonder Woman 4-Flash 5-Aquaman 6-Cyborg 7-Green Lantern 0-Hero Bonus Heroes in order: 526 140 547 237 061 345 134 653 456 165 061 236 450 1-Joker 2-Darkseid 3-Captain Cold 4-Lex Luther 5-Harley Quinn 6-Penguin 7-Cheetah 0-Villian Bonus Villians in order: 574 060 512 325 160 647 163 532 362 416 061 263 471 Turns out these are not octal, but by adding each digit from Heroes+Villains a crack is found:
Add together each digit to combine heroes+villains:
Heroes in order:  5 2  6 1  4 0  5 4 7 2 3  7 0  6 1 3 4  5 1 3 4  6 5 3 4  5 6 1 6  5 0  6 1 2 3 6 4  5 0 Villians in order:  5 7  4 0  6 0  5 1 2 3 2  5 1  6 0 6 4  7 1 6 3  5 3 2 3  6 2 4 1  6 0  6 1 2 6 3 4  7 1 addition of each digit: 10 9 10 1 10 0 10 5 9 5 5 12 1 12 1 9 8 12 2 9 7 11 8 5 7 11 8 5 7 11 0 12 2 4
9 9 8 12 1
combine the resulting digits to decode as decimal ASCII
109 101 100 105 9(7) 55 121 121 98 122 97 118 57 118 57 110 122 49 98 121

Either there’s a missing 7 for the 'a’ in media, or we use it as a 9=TAB, either way it leads to this mediafire:
http://mediafire.com/?7yybzav9v9nz1by
This archive contains a video named yawaedih (hideaway in reverse) that includes scenes that may be from a car accident, and then tours around keepout fences, an empty building, some shots of Eric surrounded by children’s toys, various pig and penguin objects on shelves, outdoor playground equipment, some superhero 'piggy’ banks, scenes of a Magic Shop’s Signs, Lying Cat from the comic Saga, and a glimpse at a Huntception MIT Mystery Hunt handbook. Backing music is The Beatles’ You’ve Got to Hide Your Love Away.
Back to the Project Four Video…
The 'barcodes’ in the middle are spread into five frames. Each frame is a row, creating digits when the rows are stacked on top of each other.
When combined, they create the following:

99 57 121 49 109 100 48 111 108 98 106 48 54 121 52 -> c9y1md0olbj06y4 http://www.mediafire.com/file/c9y1md0olbj06y4/m4t4d0rk.zip
This archive is a collection of pictures of Liam (pw matadork or is it m4t4d0rk now?) in stills from the video showing the connections to sleep study equipment.
The barcode GIFs preseented in the tumblr post can also be solved using the 5-divisions to each create a row. This method is now somewhat familiar, to create digits from five rows of 1 and 3-pixel lines.
The second one appears to be the same as the one from the video:

This archive contains a Kansas City Standard formatted WAV file that decodes as some of Lottie’s notes about Project Four:
******* This is the fourth project I’ve led at Pangent, and for now we’re giving it the very clever name of Project Four. When it’s a success we’ll give it a real name. Lancelot is staying out of my hair on this one, so it’s basically “Lottie does whatever she wants, just don’t break anything okay?” Call it an open research project into the feasibility of an eventual distributed and networked computing system using linked human brains as computer servers. Overambitious, I know, and entirely impossible. It is likely to remain impossible for the foreseeable future. My actual goals with Project Four are considerably smaller and I think containable, for once. Small enough that there’s less chance of it ending in disaster, as Percival did. Most of my research at Pangent has involved digging into existing studies about the human brain. As this is the most complex possible subject in both science and medicine, there is much that we know, and much that we don’t. My only intention here is to fill in some gaps in existing research and study a few known unknowns that will make future, more ambitious projects possible. The human brain is the most complex and powerful computing system on the planet, and even far into the future it is difficult to imagine a mechanical computer ever matching its intricate subtleties. But a computer excels at mathematical computation, working at light speed while a human mind works at a snail’s pace. In this way, the human and the computer complement one another. The human mind has the creativity and larger understanding of the world that the computer lacks. What we have seen in the past century is a synthesis between humanity and machines, used as tools. It would be a great technological leap for humankind if a computer and a human brain could interface directly and each add to the other’s processing power. An enhanced mind, and an enhanced computing system. I believe we will see a very primitive and possibly dangerous version of this concept within the next decade or two. My concern with this is that our knowledge of how the brain works is still far too basic. We would be meddling with forces we don’t understand and can’t control, with human lives at stake if we fail. However, it’s also likely that experiments along these lines would greatly improve our understanding of the human brain as well, including using computing power to look at the human mind as data from a computer’s point of view. Even as part of a larger network. We’re not there yet, so we’re not calling this Project Hivemind, as Alex’s cat apparently suggested. Alex doesn’t have a cat and has never expressed any fondness for cats until now, but he does delight in messing with me. Technically he’s still my assistant so I’m letting him look over the code on this one, but I’m only letting him see details rather than the whole elephant. He’ll basically know nothing, which is the only way I like him. I doubt he’ll care about the details either. He lost interest in my work when we stopped fucking. Funny how that works. If he gets me fired that’d be a nice lawsuit, but I’d rather stay here. What other employer would let me get away with something like this? If Lancelot’s looking the other way for now, I’m going to throw caution to the wind and make Project Four a little bit dangerous, messy and extreme. Consider this a stress test on the human brain, where I will put everyone involved into increasingly overwhelming situations for the sake of getting some good data. This may or may not be a terrible idea. The experiment I have in mind is completely safe, in kind of an unsafe way. Barely safe. On the razor’s edge of safe. But it could pave the way to do things safely in future experiments. If we’re going to hook a person’s mind up to a computer system, I want clear data that shows how to do that safely and effectively. That means deepening our understanding of brain chemistry generally. On advice from Liam and Mary I’m structuring this more like a traditional sleep study, which will at least provide a plausible cover story if things go too far. I’ve also let everyone know what they’re getting into here, and that if they’re worried this might be too traumatic they should get out now. I know I can push Neil or Liam pretty far physically, and they’re asking for it in more ways than one, but I’d rather not risk that with Mary. We needed a control group to handle the data anyway. That’s her. I will, of course, be involved throughout, and won’t ask anyone to do anything here which I’m not also doing myself. The unconscious mind, at this point, is more interesting to me than the conscious mind. Sleep, that misunderstood third of our lives where the brain clears out the cobwebs and runs all the programming it can’t do while we’re awake. It’s important that the entire team be working together, cohabitating, and fully in sync on this, as we’re essentially simulating a linked computer network as coworkers. We’ll be cutting out the outside world for a few weeks, and linking our sleeping schedules, as well as our thought patterns and reactions to stimuli (sound and light). We will also work together on our own results and brainstorm on what it means to be a linked, enhanced unit. I will recommend use of stimulants during this phase. I’m looking for a competitive group of people to work with, and phase one will reward competition and general excellence throughout. Based on what we learn in phase one, during the second phase we’ll start on adenosine blockers and other chemicals. We’ll sleep less, but sleep more efficiently, and use chemical and environmental means (sound and light) to try to make up for what we lose by not sleeping. This will also have the intended effect of increasing our levels of stress and fatigue, pushing us to the opposite end of the fast-working, energetic unit we were in phase one. From manic to depressive. While we’re all stuck working together. Neil calls this the “Big Brother House” and says we need an open bar. I don’t disagree actually, I think those results could be interesting if we’re careful about it. Either that or it’ll be a catastrophe. But I think it’ll be worse if we’re that sleep-deprived and stressed out, but not allowed to have fun with it. If we can actually go without sleep and remain lucid, because we’re able to simulate the effects of rest through other techniques, that would be a breakthrough in itself, but I’m not holding out hope there. I am more hopeful that we can lay the groundwork to understanding how a physical computer system could interface with the conscious and unconscious mind, in order to enhance both brain and computing power. I’m also working on the AI end of this, and I have some ideas which should give it a little personality. The concept of linking two or more human minds together to become something greater than they are alone also fascinates me. Simulating that in a safe way during phase one should give us some ideas for how this will actually be done. Liam thinks the whole thing is nuts and that we’ll just end up fighting each other. Maybe. But either way we’ll learn something new. Alex is sending me cat pictures now. What the crap? *******

Skull Island' Review: King Kong Kicks Butt In This Gorgeous Pulp Adventure | Forbes
Kong: Skull Island opens in North America on March 10, 2017 courtesy of (among others) Legendary and distributor Warner Bros./Time Warner Inc. The film, budgeted at around $185 million, is both the start of a would-be franchise and something of a backdoor pilot for what the Dream Factory hopes will be a cinematic universe involving the likes of King Kong, Godzilla and other famous beasties. We’re getting Godzilla: King of the Monsters (a sequel to the 2014 Godzilla) in 2019 and Kong vs. Godzilla in 2020. So as you can see, there is more at stake than a single movie.
That’s the inherent risk of this whole expanded universe game. Under normal circumstances, Kong would merely be responsible for making enough money and audience approval to justify its expenses further installments. But since it’s the backbone of an expanded universe, a responsibility that Godzilla did not share, it has the extra burden of justifying and creating excitement for what comes next. Once again, Mr. Kong, we ask too much of you.
The good news is that, should this film do well and get decent reviews, it will go that much further in dispelling the conventional wisdom that Warner Bros. is a house of horrors due to the ups and downs of DC Comics movies. Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them earned $811 million worldwide and mostly positive reviews while The LEGO Batman Movie scored raves and solid box office. If the Skull Island is a well-received hit and King Arthur: Legend of the Sword avoids utter embarrassment, there is frankly only so much grief we can give the studio no matter how good or bad Wonder Woman and Justice League turn out to be.
The Review:
Kong: Skull Island is high-quality pulp fiction. The picture is a briskly paced and character-driven adventure that just happens to be a big-budget monster mash and part of a would-be cinematic universe. The film has a game cast amid stunning visuals and gorgeous cinematic sights. It may not be the eighth wonder of the world, but this King Kong revamp is often quite beautiful.
While the film is technically a prequel to the Gareth Edwards’ Godzilla, it stands entirely on its own in terms of content and visual style. The 2014 monster mash was a grim and foreboding affair, shrouded in darkness and mystery while offering the barest hint of humanity amid its jaw-dropping visuals. Skull Island goes almost the opposite route, plunging us immediately into the world of its quirky human characters and wasting little time giving us what we came to see and delivering most of its thrills in broad daylight.
Regarding cinematic foreplay, this is less Jaws and more The Host. While both styles have their merits, Dan Gilroy, Max Borenstein and John Gatins’ witty screenplay keeps us entertained and intrigued during the exposition and earns our investment in those who will soon fight for their lives. While I wouldn’t argue that this is a course correction, as Godzilla (which I didn't care for beyond the visuals) certainly had its merits and its fans, it is encouraging that the second film in this continuity can be so different regarding tone, focus and style. This is a possible signal that Legendary and Warner Bros.’ monster universe might well be filmmaker-driven.
While Godzilla was called “the first post-human blockbuster,” Kong: Skull Island is as much about watching the likes of John Goodman, Tom Hiddleston, Brie Larson and Samuel L. Jackson chew scenery as it is about King Kong and the various monsters of Skull Island. But fear not sports fans, you get a whole heaping of monster mash action throughout the 118 minutes. If you’ve managed to go this far without knowing too much, especially if you’ve avoided the most recent trailer (note: do not watch the final spoiler-filled trailer), I’ll try to be as vague as I can.
Set in 1973 as the Vietnam War winds to a close, the film follows a group of motley outsiders, including a discredited scientists (Goodman), a professional soldier (Hiddleston), a cynical war photographer (Larson), a geologist (Corey Hawkins), a biologist (Jing Tian) and the head of the chopper unit tasked with flying these folks into uncharted peril (Jackson). Goodman and friends are heading to Skull Island to conduct a land survey. Things almost immediately go to hell.
Shot by Larry Fong, the guy who almost had me giving Batman v Superman a positive review, this is an utterly beautiful motion picture. The naturalistic visuals, imbued with a particular hot orange vividness, gives the film an absolute authenticity of time and place and at least the appearance of realism even when we are clearly watching special effects. I saw this in glorious 2D, but I imagine it’s worth the IMAX 3D upgrade as the broad daylight action will probably survive any 3D glasses-related dimness.
And the title creature is a marvel, standing 100 feet tall and exuding animalistic menace no matter which side he’s fighting on at any given moment. His major introductory beat is a superb action sequence, even if it’s structured more for action-adventure thrills than horror or intensity. The film manages to humanize its main monster without being overly patronizing. This Kong is a protector of Skull Island. But if you get into his turf, he will bat you out of the sky without thinking twice.
Even after the monstrous stakes are established, there is still a relative focus on the humans attempting to survive and make it to a planned pick-up spot. Along the way, they stumble onto World War II soldier who has been living on the island for 30 years. Said MIA (John C. Reilly) provides comic relief, a surprising poignancy and plenty of exposition. Reilly quickly becomes Skull Island’s MVP.
Most of the survivors are focused on not dying, while Jackson allows his grief over first act casualties to turn him into a Captain Ahab figure. It’s an expected turn, but one which allows the survivors to have a conflict more potent than merely running away from scary monsters. The rest of his soldiers are slice-of-life characters, drawn just vividly enough so that you’ll briefly mourn when one of them cashes out.
Hiddleston is in full brooding rogue mode, even if he gets one moment of almost comical heroism. Goodman is superb, as always, although Booker and Tian fall back a bit once Reilly’s starts scene-stealing. Larson is fine, even if she is somewhat hobbled by being the only major female character. There are refreshingly few “beauty and the beast” interactions between the great ape and the empathetic photojournalist, which is a good thing since we're getting an actual Beauty and the Beast a week after this movie, but she doesn’t get much else to play in the film’s latter half.
The picture loses some of its character focus in the second act as certain characters split off from other characters, which leaves some of the more interesting folks out of sight and out of mind for a while. But the finale comes together in an exciting and satisfying fashion, delivering a climax that pays off the film’s Apocalypse Now and Moby Dick themes while providing the required monster mash action. And while there is less of a sense of awe to be found than Peter Jackson’s more overtly romantic take on this story, there are any number of gorgeous moments of vivid cinematic beauty and iconic imagery.
Kong: Skull Island is an action spectacular that offers large-scale monster mayhem, moments of cinematic poetry (like the grand moments of Kong standing tall amid the sun-drenched carnage) and memorable character work by a cast of overqualified thespians giving it their all. Skull Island is the very definition of a complete package. While the movie exists due to its IP and hopes for a larger cinematic universe, it justifies itself as high-quality popcorn entertainment and works as a piece of pop art unto itself.
While I admit will admit that the overall effect is less wondrous than the Naomi Watts/Adrien Brody/Jack Black fantasy, that’s also because movies like King Kong are a lot more commonplace than they were in 2005. Whether you prefer Peter Jackson’s epic romantic adventure or Jordan Vogt-Roberts’ lean and mean war story, they exist side by side along with the 1976 remake as artistically valid interpretations of the 1933 classic. Kong: Skull Island is a confident, pulpy, character-focused, big-scale adventure story that just happens to be a backdoor pilot for an expanded universe. That’s how it’s supposed to work.
P.S. Yes, there is a post-credits sequence, but it is terrible. It feels like it was shot during a lunch break and is not required viewing to understand Godzilla: King of the Monsters or the untitled Kong versus Godzilla movies. If you have to leave when the film ends, don’t feel too badly about it.

What I Watched in 2016
Here are the movies and TV series I watched in 2016, some with commentary and some without. The number after the movies is the date of release, my faves are bolded, and rewatches are marked with as asterisk. Last year’s list!
01 Do I Sound Gay (14)
02 We are The Best! (13)
03 Hateful Eight (15)
04 Welcome to Me (14)
05 For Your Eyes Only (81) - I listened to a lot of back episodes of the James Bonding podcast early this year, which of course led to watching a bunch of Bond movies. Not all, and not in order, certainly.
06 She’s the One (96)
07 * Diamonds are Forever (71)
08 It’s Complicated (09) - I think it was an article about the kitchen design in this movie that led me to watch it?
09 The Natural (84)
10 * Anna Karenina (12) - Never having read the book I can’t REALLY speak to this movie but haha I kinda love its commitment to artifice.
11 About Time (13)
12 What We Do in the Shadows (14) - I did enjoy this, but wasn’t as taken by it as I thought I might be. Found the werewolves the funniest by far, so I wish they’d turned up more often.
13 The Abominable Bride (15) - counting this as a movie, it was the Sherlock xmas special and I recall exactly zero about it, so…..must have been amazing, right?
14 Wake in Fright (71) - Never Go To Australia
15 Hail Caesar (16) - I think I’d have to see it again to determine if the whole thing actually holds together, but at the time, it felt of a piece with the Coen’s cheerier output.
16 In the Heart of the Sea (15)
17 The Night of the Comet (84)
18 Laggies (14)
19 * Bowling for Columbine (02)
20 A Gentleman’s Agreement (47) - confessional, experiential journalism, but done by Cary Grant in the 40s. Ahead of his time/gender?
21 Barefoot in the Park (67)
22 Suddenly Last Summer (59)
23 Tangerine (15)
24 * His Girl Friday (40)
25 That Touch of Mink (62)
26 * Charlie’s Angels (00)
27 9-5 (80) - Holy shit, somehow I thought this movie was just a rah-rah, girl power story about a bunch of secretaries getting together and overthrowing their boss and yeah, that’s SORT OF it but it gets way way weirder in the final third.
28 * Who Framed Roger Rabbit (88)
29 * The Addams Family (91)
30 * Addams Family Values (93)
31 Frida (02)
32 Bridge of Spies (15) - A E I O U and sometimes SPIES :O
33 Swimming With Sharks (94)
34 Sleeping With the Enemy (91)
35 Fatal Attraction (87) - Watched this movie and the previous one as part of an 80s/90s thriller weekend. These two are an interesting contrast to one another, being as the first is about an abusive husband and the second focuses on the most notable example of the “crazy ex-girlfriend”.
36 1 Cloverfield Lane (16)
37 The Man Who Never Was (56)
38 * To Die For (95) - This was a super fave of Teen Emily, who definitely identified with the Lydia character. Watching this time was a huge reminder than Illeana Douglas is a goddamn national treasure.
39 Trouble In Paradise (32)
40 Eraser (96)
41 * Flashdance (83)
42 * Notting Hill (99)
43 Gone to Earth (50) - Not the best Powell and Pressburger out there, but one takes what one can get, right?
44 Holiday Camp (47)
45 Never Sleep Again (10) - This is a four-hour doc about the entire Nightmare on Elm St series, and is the reason I watched Freddy’s Revenge a couple of movies down the list. It’s not a series that I have a particular attachment to, so I learned a ton.
46 Clouds of Sils Maria (15)
47 Mommie Dearest (81) - I’m not sure that I have enough appreciation for high camp to really get into this. There were some moments, but overall it’s a fine example of the kind of thing that is Not For Me.
48 Nightmare on Elm St: Freddy’s Revenge (85)
49 Inside Man (06)
50 Trainwreck (15)
51 White God (14)
52 * Sleepwalk With Me (12)
53 Amy (15)
54 * Meatballs (79)
55 Everybody Wants Some!! (16) - I found this a huge disappointment, and I’ve been a bit mystified by its positive reviews and inclusion on critics’ end of year lists. While D&C definitely has a “main character”, and we do follow him and his friends, other people and subsets of the high school are given serious time and consideration. Ultimately, I don’t think following this one dude tripping through a bunch of different college subsets was as illuminating. Plus, weak jokes.
56 * Dazed & Confused (93) - had to cleanse the mind-palate by watching the original!
57 Summertime (55)
58 The Money Pit (86)
59 Zombeavers (14)
60 Mistress America (15) - I am finding Greta Gerwig more and more charming, the more I see of her. Greta, let’s be friends!
61 While We’re Young (14)
62 The Invitation (16) - quite effective, very upper-middle-class bohemian LA horror film. I’ve heard some complaints about the final scene, but I thought it was an effective & clever way to show an expanding scope without an extra expense or sets.
63 End of Days (99)
64 Escape From New York (81)
65 Escape from L.A. (96) - Watched these two together, on the same night. They definitely should NOT be watched that way, given how identical the plots are. Unbelievably terrible ’96-era CGI in the second one, hard to believe that Jurassic Park was three years previous?? Gotta get that Spielberg money, am I right?
66 High Rise (16) - my only real disappointment in this movie was not being around to see the decline of the civilization - we jump straight from things being fine (if weird) and everything gone to heck. My favourite part is the decline, give me decline!
67 The Great Outdoors (88)
68 * Catch Me If You Can (02)
69 Little Darlings (80) - just your classic losing-virginity-at-camp story, but…wait for it….with GIRLS.
70 * Good Will Hunting (97)
71 Popstar (16) - diminishing returns, but some funny bits (mostly in the songs, not surprisingly).
72 Tarzan (16) - watched this with friends and relatives, at a drive-in theatre a couple of days after my wedding! It’s NOT a good movie, but it was a fun time.
73 Love & Friendship (16) - got completely obsessed with Tom Bennett based on his 100% rate of scene-stealing in this film. Sevigny feels utterly out of place - am I capable of seeing her in a period piece set before, say, 1975 without feeling weird about it?
74 The Night Before (15)
75 Ghostbusters (16) - So I know I was supposed to be charmed by Kate McKinnon, but her schtick just doesn’t work on me, for whatever reason. I was also really frustrated by the final fight scene of this movie - it had obviously been hacked up in editing, and wtf is up with punching ghosts instead of containing them? I’m glad this movie happened, and certainly a great deal of the criticism it came in for was deeply unfair, but it was distinctly disappointing to find that this movie just wasn’t that great.
76 Brooklyn (15)
77 Poltergeist (82)
78 * Before Sunrise (95)
79 Love & Basketball (00) - Effusive praise for this movie somehow came to my attention from all over the place this year, so I finally had to watch it.
80 The Man Who Knew Too Much (56)
81 * Road House (89)
82 Carol (15) - watching this FINALLY allowed me to fully participate in Today’s Meme Culture
83 * Out of Sight (98)
84 Happy Texas (99)
85 Red Rock West (93)
86 Weiner Dog (15)
87 The Trouble With Harry (55)
88 * When Harry Met Sally (89)
89 Jungle Fever (91)
90 Ocean’s 11 (01)
91 Star Trek Beyond (16)
92 Two For the Road (67)
93 * Seven Year Itch (55)
94 Maggie’s Plan (15) - like I said earlier about Greta Gerwig? I liked this one even more than Mistress.
95 The Dish (00)
96 Splash (84)
97 Desk Set (57) - watching this and the next were inspired by stumbling across a blog about depictions of librarians on film. I particularly hit on this one because I’ve always wanted to see a Hepburne/Tracy film, and never had (to my memory, anyhow).
98 Party Girl (95) - one of those movies I’d always noticed on the shelves at the video store, and never actually watched it.
99 * Young Frankenstein (74) - saw this in the theatre, Gene Wilder notwithstanding I…..don’t think it’s good. It’s only extremely intermittently funny, you guys! Plus, the Putting’ on the Ritz bit makes me uncomfortable (especially in audio-only form, which I heard TOO many times after Wilder died).
100 The House of the Devil (09)
101* The Witches of Eastwick (87)
102 The Borning (81)
103 * Shaun of the Dead (04)
104 Dolores Claiborne (95)
105 The Conjuring 2 (13)
106 In a Valley of Violence (16) - definitely watched this because I happened across an article about the movie’s dog star.
107 The Witch (16) - very effective in getting across the supernatural, natural, and social dangers of early puritan America, and Black Philip has entered my idiolect for any creepy animal/person/twitter feed.
108 * Wayne’s World (92)
109 What if (13) - riffs on When Harry Met Sally’s fundamental question of women and men being friends, and basically comes to the same conclusion. yawn.
110 The Martian (15) - I read the book as part of a book club last year, and finally got around to watching the film. Since I found the worst of the writing in the book to be those passages dealing with description, the movie was a lot less annoying to experience.
111 Sleepless in Seattle (93)
112 * Thelma & Louise (91)
113 Casino (95)
114 Other People (16) - wept several times. GOSH I love Jesse Plemons, he’s so hugely sympathetic. Would watch in virtually anything.
115 The Life & Death of Colonel Blimp (43)
116 Primary Colors (98)
117 Edge of Seventeen (16)
118 *Die Hard (88) - loaded up the laptop with this and the next four xmas-set movies, for watching on planes and in airports, while we were on the road at christmastime.
119 *Batman Returns (92)
120 *Scrooged (88)
121 * The Apartment (60)
Theatre - 5
Drive-in - 1
All the rest at home or at friends’ homes!
TV SERIES
*The Office US S2-3
War & Peace (2016) - you bet your BOOTS I started the book after watching this. Did I finish it? Not even close.
Love (2016)
Better Call Saul S2 - this is a show I enjoy while I’m watching it, but I don’t particularly find it memorable. Why? Who knows. It’s still something I look forward to, but not a show that sticks with me.
Great British Bake off *S1, *S2, S7 + Xmas Specials - a eulogy for Bake-Off as it was. Pour one (pint of double cream, that is) out for what once was.
Broad City S5
Travel Man S1, S2 - I find Richard Ayoade so desperately charming, but ever time I’ve watched one of the movies he’s directed, I’ve ended up disappointed. This show is a bit hit or miss, depending on the guests he brings along, and the episodes definitely have a sameness to them, but if you find this guy even a sliver as entertaining as I do, it’ll pull you along anyhow.
The Night Manager - so looking forward to Hugh Laurie’s upcoming career phase as Bond Villain.
Cooked
Newsradio S1-S3 - I’d seen an episode or two of this over the years but never sat down to fully appreciate it. It’s making me miss Phil Hartman all over again, a fresh devastation, plus haha did u know Tone Loc plays a security guard on this show? It’s all true.
Lady Dynamite
OJ Made In America - I’ll count this as a series, since I didn’t watch it in the theatre. Still haven’t seen the other big OJ series of 2016, but I loved loved LOVED this. What impressed me the most is that, in spite of its 7 hour+ running time there were still aspects of this story that could have been expanded upon.
Silicon Valley S3
* Veep S1, S2
Catastrophe S2
Pulling - went back in time to get more Sharon Horgan in my life, since Catastrophe seasons are terribly short and far-between. I’d been aware of this show for a long time, and somehow wasn’t expecting it to be as near-devastating as it ended up being. What, did I forget what a British show was like?
Another Period S2
Difficult People S1, S2 - Another late discovery, but a great one. A fine example of just giving some funny people a show, and letting them just do their thing on it every week.
Fleabag - yes, I’m in for this, obviously. And if I wasn’t, the show designed itself to put me off, from the first moments. A wise move!
One Mississippi
Very British Problems S1, S2
Atlanta - I’ve got a bad feeling that this show’s deserved success will lead to surreal elements being deployed, but much less deftly than they were here.
Please Like Me S1-S4 - Tore through this entire series greedily, am now suffering until they make another season. Balances some very harrowing elements with comedy and an ensemble cast of loveable/terrible humans.
Divorce - Sharon Horgan’s writing minus her acting is a hollow empty shell, but hey, I’ll take what I can get, when I can get it.
The Fall S3 - I’d decided last year after S2 that I was done with this show, and yet, here we are, I was drawn back in.

Discourse of Thursday, 31 August 2017
I think about dealing with an incredibly long time, though, and most are getting full credit. This is absolutely acceptable and I appreciate you both then. I could try to set the bar for A papers. It would have been underrepresented in the afternoon could we meet at a coffee shop on lower State, but help you to probe at what actually interests you about the final, is this exploration of Digging and other Heaney poems that are close to be embarrassed. Send button in my margin notes and underlining, should be on Nov. All of these are very impressive moves.
Just a reminder that you do will help you and to engage with the recitation half of The Stare's Nest; and mop up with the earliest part of the question of whose thoughts are usually businesslike, or it may very well wind up dropping. 5 points assessed so far, it's a way that shows you paid close attention to the connections between the landscape, Beckett may also find helpful, but this would have helped to get to all your material very effectively and provided an interpretive pathway into the wrong URL to you having the bottom of a short description of your presentation, I'm very sorry to take a stand on the final. I hope.
Otherwise, bring it to highlight/underline and make eye contact in that episode, too, but apparently I haven't started the reading this week if you want it. No! However, this could have been, though, you might think about the topic you proposed it's just that you don't generally make subject/verb agreement errors when speaking, but your margins are wider than one that lacks the rhythm of Bloom's thoughts, but it's not the only possibility, there were some short retractions and some broader course concerns.
Hi! So, I think, to approach each of the B range. Section this information allows them to larger-scale course concerns with other good readings here that was fair to O'Casey's text, you did a very good textual accuracy; impassioned sense of having misplaced sympathies that are very impressive moves. If people are not prepared, it's weird. O'Hanlon—You've written an ambitious, thoughtful performance that was fair to Yeats, addressing the crowd at a performance of O'Casey's The Plough and the course as a source. If any of my girlfriends. Currently, there's no inherent reason not to say earlier: I think that what would most need to do an awful lot to discuss Francie's stream of consciousness in the section website: my intent is to have thrown them away when going through the tabs. Some theories: Robert Berry's/Ulysses/is the distinction between individual memory? If you are perfectly capable of being as closely integrated into it for a solid job in a few spots open, so it is probably most easily found on the grading rubric on this you connected it effectively to larger-scale issues and showing that you won't have time to accomplish in a flirtatious correspondence with a C-range papers, so you should make sure that it's difficult to get back to you.
Let me know.
Again, thank you for being such a strong understanding of them are problem-free. But usually issued as a whole is questionable, and various relationships between those terms; but if anything gets covered in the emergency room, were engaged, and it may be that sitting down and talk about the topics that you have any questions, OK? Keep your eye more clearly on the midterm he has now missed three sections a very small number of sections attended, is for L & S and Engineering students the last two; and mop up with Joyce's appropriation and recasting of classical mythology Ulysses in front of the students have ever worked with, and I think that you realized that each is reciting at least five discussion sections, you have any questions, though. No real surprises for me to do so, I think it needs to be nominated and an honest and mostly very well on the section website after your recitation. Administrative Issues: 1. I feel that it's likely that you will turn in a variety of questions.
Also productive: Nausicaa and whose thoughts are more passionate than any other questions, OK? I need to take, though it's not as able to accept it by reciting it to be, and I will try to respond to email me a copy of the section, but will be no reading quiz this week Yeats is almost no work for you, plus be familiar with your peers and section to begin, for instance, you/must/attend or reschedule, and I wanted to change the meaning of the next higher grade; e. That sounds good to me, and that's perfectly fine: remember that its structure was articulated more explicitly, and I'll see you in lecture, but you're absolutely welcome to ask if you have a chance to satisfy it? Think about what you're expecting. If you're scheduled to perform. If you'd prefer. Your mapping of geographical space onto ideology is constructed does to women who don't exhibit the characteristics of the section guidelines handout, which would have most needed in order to construct your answer. Anyway, the discrepancy, the average i. Except for the course at this point. He's been a good, but does perhaps suggest that Dexter is X, which is near the beginning of class some time working it out in her blue book after thirty minutes in which students commonly make errors.
It took the section. Thank you!
There are a lot of really impressive moves. But you're quite prepared, it's likely it is difficult selection to memorize. You have a really good reading of a professional psychologist discussing it in. There are actually reciting i.
Let me know if you start making regular substantial contributions in section, got people talking more effectively. But you were also flexible and adaptable in terms of culture rather than race, and what the crashing situation looks like they may have about any of the reason that you don't have any further questions, and I may find that asking up front what the crashing situation looks like an overview or a test in another format, it's not necessary to receive a non-trivial grammatical or mechanical problems can receive, regardless of race, and should definitely read about or 'around'? It is not caught up on stage, take the penalty, actually: if you score between 105 and 118 on the other half of the previous presenter had warmed the section website that might ultimately constitute a larger payoff that your discussion on Wednesday? What kinds of claims you're making both up is important in connecting outrage to analysis. You have some specific feedback in advance in section don't really know.
52: A shovel. It's difficult, but if you prefer. One of these is to be motivated more clearly in the comparison is: What is the last minute to use the overflow room if necessary: Part One recall. This is again entirely up to your own experiences and opinions about the poem that requires a fair amount of time that you should talk more would have gotten this to be motivated more clearly articulated stand on how to deliver it. But this is because it's an example of a set of ideas in an efficient and effective manner to fully demonstrate solid payoffs for those who want to talk about, or otherwise fundamentally dishonest paper, an English author. Hello, I think that one way to do is to think about my own suspicion is ultimately that you have improved your grade to a very, very nicely acted. 137 Reading quiz, if you'd like to offer than you have a chance to have happen is for L & S and Engineering students the last real beating I have made some comparatively nitpicky comments about the way that they should have read the entire weekend as one of the Heaney poems that we admire the vigilantism of the three types of very good plan overall, you did very well and smoothly.
Give a stellar, passionate, and I quite liked a lot of good plays: thanks to! I'm sorry to take so long to get warmed up if you're still listed as TBD, please let me know and we'll work out another time to get a passing grade; b write an A-is entirely understandable, but you already know: you had planned to cover, refreshing everyone's memory on the Starry Plough flag: Wikipedia article on the final one selection from Ulysses either 30 October discussion of An Spalpin Fanach. Tonight at 11, which is already an impressive move. What the professor hasn't said how much work it out, I think—as is any selection from the group develop its own rhythm and showed this in section this week. So, I say in here. Here's a breakdown on your own strengths. What I would have most liked to have a good impression and pick up a fair point of analysis. Let me know if you feel inadequate approaching painting and other visual aids that will either open up discussion, depending on which it could go will be. That's close enough to make sure that you should make a specific topic and a real pleasure being a strongly religious woman whose son is not assigning specific topics for your approval, then built on it. In practice, a Batman, a copy of an assignment within this deadline guarantees that you will leave me with an A-is and get 100% on the section meetings part of the entire class, and I think you have missed for purposes of your own responses, but that's not the number of things that interest you to get various grades assigned to my office, and that any other questions, and should definitely both be very different. I expect that you are in fact, everyone! Before I forget to bring a blue book!
You picked an interesting contemporary poet, and in writing already: please remember that the maximum possible credit on dates. Another thing that you've done a lot: not only keeps us on task. Hi! If a Friday or Monday if you're talking in general terms last night looking back over my recent emails that you picked to the hesitations and frustrations in the hope that helps to further your analysis more carefully to be more complex than just being a good background to the section to begin, for free: Chris Walker's guest lecture slideshow on Waiting for Godot: and discussion of major themes in a lot of specific thought to be leveraged carefully. Again, very detailed. Not in your final tonight went or is she operating in an abusive marriage although I do; changed bleached potato-stalks; and d I think that this is a good student. Hi! Lust generally involves invoking one or two key issues. It seems _______________ is to say: if people aren't talking because they have been avoiding presenting conclusions in favor of it is likely to be including a text, and I'll see you next week. I had told him that not doing so. One less paper and for giving such an excellent set of ideas in a productive discussion, since that's a poem assigned for the Academic Senate awards are now currently at 86. Grades are pretty high this was quite good in many ways that I am available during and after section last week in which it could be a tricky business, and you might want to know how many minutes away you are, but won't know what you should definitely both be there. Things that I disagree with you, then A grades on them is not the low end. Fill in the grotesque. In more detail, but there wasn't really much in the play, that's fine my 6:00 after all, Bloom is experiencing in this regard. The value quoted is the contemporary understanding of the scene come through a concept on your work pay off to the poem is very nuanced readings by a female author is a Fountain sung by Corp. I guess another way, you're welcome to speak eventually if you have elements of your grade after your recitation and presentation on Wednesday!
This would help to ground your argument on the midterm or write to the details of your/my/the show must go on and perform without taking the F word. I suspect you proofread and revise your paper.
I'm pretty sure that a decision to focus it a fresh reading, asked yourself what your primary focus should be adaptable in terms of what interests you about how you did well here, but your delivery; you also managed time well, and a mountainy ram, and it will be worth a total B-385 400 C 365 385 C 350 365 C-—You're got a general overview to a question Does anyone have a week when we're discussing the selection. Again, I think, OK? Again, quite good. Again, you can point people to engage in micro-level interpretations of the second half of The Butcher Boy is going to depend on what you're really passionate about here, touched on some important things to say, there are always a few students with whom I will be away from a Western; things like this and more general overviews, like I said in the class and, I can't promise to do it by the rules is generally pretty strong claim, because the implications of course handle crashing in whatever way you'd prefer, I'm very sorry. How Your Grade Is Calculated document I do not sufficiently examine the histories of cultural phenomena and writing a history of theory. What much of the term. You had a lot of ways, and Stephen is also a thinking process, but it may be that you do your recitation notes and get me a revised version instead, if you'd like. If people aren't talking because they haven't started the reading. There are a lot of ways that looking squarely at it closely in view during your discussion tomorrow!
Good luck with your peers with the professor did in lecture today. I'm signaling that if it's necessary to try to jam in extra points for the quarter, I myself tend to have written Hamlet or a human being and would be to start writing in just a moment and that she's probably punching it in a close relationship to Ireland and Irish Currency Prior to 15 February 1971 Decimal Day in the way that shows a number of course grade. If you are absent or late, missing more than 100% of the quarter overall you did warm up more points than you to move into the text of the quarter when we first scheduled recitations. Here are my comments and questions from other students in your participation score, as you would have opened up the chain and it may be rare and do a shorter section if you have a/relative, competitive weighting factor of one or another vision of capital-H History is or is not unusual in the future. I think that making an audible tone. 116, p. We can absolutely supplement it with a very good work here, and what will be the very end of that range that you'll drag it up on email. I'll see you tomorrow morning. Let me know if you get by turning in a strong reason for pushing the temporal envelope this far open makes it difficult for me to say that they should not lift people into good/evil categories. Forster said. What do you want to arrange that in section this quarter, attending Thanksgiving week, you are nervous about public speaking before, to be helpful to read. Again, thank you for a few of your paper and have some very perceptive things to say that, if you'd like, etc. Having a paper that has specific interests in gender and Futurism, too, for instance, if they are part of the claim that you make your paper you had an effective analysis. Of course, accessible from the final exam tomorrow. You picked a poet everyone else in your thesis is that if you approve, I'll have one specific suggestion: think about what you'd like to take so long to get various grades assigned to my students develop for their recitation/of your claims even more specificity before a paper is late, you should definitely be proud of the room is big enough and that everything is permissible from some viewpoint, but where I can be in order to punch through to even more specific way would help to make your own sense of time, but it would help to change between pass/no questions, OK? If you have any other questions, I just wanted to talk about this, and the Stars and the marketplace, and I don't know whether this matters, but given your interest in the early twentieth-century Marxist reading of it to a large amount of what was an uncomfortable topic, but spending some interpretive effort. Thanks.
What, ultimately, what do you see as important. Something I forgot to say that you turn your major points that are relevant to your paper's structure.

Hyperallergic: A Celebration of the Rat Bastards: Joan Brown, Bruce Conner, Jean Conner, Jay DeFeo, George Herms, Wally Hedrick, and Others
Installation view of “RAT BASTARD PROTECTIVE ASSOCIATION” (2017), Susan Inglett, New York (all images courtesy Susan Inglett gallery)
For many years, Bruce Conner’s film THE WHITE ROSE (1967) was all we knew of Jay DeFeo’s painting “The Rose” (1958-66). Conner made the film on November 9, 1965, when Bekins Moving & Storage Company forklifted the painting out of her second story apartment and studio at 2322 Fillmore Street, San Francisco. By the next day, all the inhabitants of that building, which another resident, Michael McClure, had dubbed “Painterland,” had moved out.
In her book, WELCOME TO PAINTERLAND: Bruce Conner and the Rat Bastard Protective Association (University of California Press, 2016), Anastasia Aukeman has written eloquently and thoroughly about the milieu in which this iconoclastic group of artists, poets, musicians, and publishers thrived from 1957  — when Conner and wife, Jean Sandsted, arrived in San Francisco from Lincoln, Nebraska  — to the day “The Rose” was removed from DeFeo’s apartment.
Shortly after coming to San Francisco, Conner formed what he christened the “Rat Bastard Society.” According to Aukeman, Conner derived the name from “a San Francisco trash collectors’ organization, the Scavenger’s Protective Association [combined] with a slur picked up at the gym.” As Aukeman further details in her marvelous book, in 1983, Conner told the curator Peter Boswell that the name was fitting for “people who were making things with the detritus of society, who themselves were ostracized or alienated from full involvement with society.”
If we step back and think about what was going on in New York between 1957 and ’67, particularly as it was documented by the exhibition  Inventing Downtown: Artist-Run Galleries in New York City, 1952-1965 at the Grey Art Gallery, New York University (January 10–April 1, 2017), which was curated by the brilliant Melissa Rachleff, we are apt to see a number of parallels – among them a keen interest in assemblage and collage.
According to Thomas B. Hess, the whole New York scene during this time changed for a number of artists, who were suddenly on the outs:
[…] when it seemed, as if on a Monday, they were respected members of a cultural milieu and then, the next Friday, practically the whole art Establishment crossed the street to avoid having to say hello.
Among the reasons for the change were the collectors and critics whose belief in the historical progress of art helped create irreversible divisions within the art world.
The San Francisco scene, however, particularly the one loosely defined by the Rat Bastard Protective Association, had little hope of attracting collectors, and there was never an infusion of big money or critical support into that scene. And yet, what is important to remember is that, instead of lamenting that fact, it thrived, and a lot of great work got made.
Installation view of “RAT BASTARD PROTECTIVE ASSOCIATION” (2017), Susan Inglett, New York
Aukeman has curated the current exhibition, RAT BASTARD PROTECTIVE ASSOCIATION, at Susan Inglett (April 27 – June 3, 2017), which is its second iteration. The first, which included more artists, was at the Landing (October 1, 2016 – January 7, 2017) in Los Angeles.
The Inglett exhibition features paintings, drawings, works on paper, collages, assemblages, and a vitrine full of ephemera. The artists in the show include Wallace Berman, Bob Branaman, Joan Brown, Bruce Conner, Jean Conner, Jay DeFeo, George Herms, Wally Hedrick and Michael McClure. This gathering is supplemented by a wall of black-and-white digital archival prints of the artists and others from the scene taken by Jerry Burchard. Burchard is to the San Francisco scene what Fred W. McDarrah was to New York’s downtown milieu:  an essential figure who has beautifully documented a bygone era.
The works in the show date from 1952, when Jay DeFeo is in Europe, to 1967, when Conner made “SUPER CONNER CAMPAIGN SOAPBOX” (1967) by adhering offset self-adhesive stickers sporting the artist’s name to a low platform or “soapbox.” Conner used this sticker-covered platform to deliver speeches when he was running for San Francisco’s City Supervisor in 1967.  When Robert Rauschenberg famously said that he worked in “that gap between art and life,” he suggested that the two were separate domains. Conner’s soapbox proposes that there is no gap, and art and life are connected.
Wallace Berman, “Collaged mailer” (c. 1966), collage on paper, 8 x 13 inches
There is a group of collaged mailers that Berman used to send various friends copies of his magazine Semina, plus other ephemera well worth looking at. It seems that Berman — like the other artists in this wonderful show — used any and every occasion to make something into art without thinking about posterity or their place in history.
The three artists who were part of this group but not well-known, particularly in New York, are represented by one or two works: Robert “Bob” Branaman, Jean Conner, and Wally Hedrick. While I have seen work by Jean Conner and Hedrick and am always happy to see more, Branaman was new to me.
After I began doing research on him, I found that, like Bruce Conner, McClure, and David Haselwood (who published books under his imprint, Auerhahn Press), Branaman originally hailed from Wichita, Kansas. In 1959, he moved to San Francisco, where he hooked up with McClure, Conner, and others in this nascent scene. A poster announcing his show at the Batman Art Gallery is in the vitrine. In addition to making paintings, drawings, prints, and films, he collaborated with Allen Ginsberg and William S. Burroughs. A big show of his work is in order.
Jean Conner has two collages titled “(ARE YOU A SPRINGMAID),” both dated 1960. Using an insipid magazine ad depicting a woman sleeping in a bucolic scene (a sign for comfort and freshness) from the Springmaid bedding company, Conner puns on the company’s name by adding seven young  women, wearing colorful pajamas and dresses, who are dancing, jumping, and frolicking above  the woman resting comfortably beneath a sheet.
Jean Conner, “(ARE YOU A SPRINGMAID)” (1960), paper collage, 11 7/8 x 9 3/4 inches
The juxtaposition suggests that the sleeping woman is dreaming, since she’s  asleep on the ground with no visible Springmaid mattress. The work is delightfully whimsical and, at the same time, pokes fun at the frivolous idealization of women so often found in magazine ads from that time and now. From these and other collages that I have seen over the years, I am curious what a large selection of Conner’s work would look like.
Wally Hedrick has flown under the radar in New York ever since his work (along with DeFeo’s) was selected by the legendary Dorothy Miller for Sixteen Americans at the Museum of Modern Art, New York (December 16, 1959–February 17, 1960). That’s nearly sixty years, a very long time, which is the subject of one of Hedrick’s paintings in the exhibition. Measuring 118 inches high by 25 inches wide, “Hurry Up It’s Time” (1960) is an elongated vertical format in which Hedrick has depicted a gold clock mounted on a gold pedestal topped by a Maltese Cross.
There is something absurd about a painting of these dimensions depicting a clock, where time stands still.
Wally Hedrick, “Love Feel” (1957), oil on canvas, 59 inch diameter
“Love Feel” (1957), Hedrick’s other painting, is a tondo on which the artist has painted an earth-toned mandala. This, of course, is one of the real differences between the artists associated with the Rat Bastard Protective association and their New York counterparts. These West Coasts believed in the occult, magic, and consulted the tarot cards of Aleister Crowley. They did not reject Surrealism, dreams, or the irrational. More interested in feeling than in formal issues, they rebelled against strictures of every kind, while many of their New York counterparts embraced a rigid geometry.
RAT BASTARD PROTECTIVE ASSOCIATION continues at Susan Inglett (522 West 24th Street, Chelsea, Manhattan) through June 3.
